Hindi Speaking Bishops Meet Patna: Bishops from the Hindi-speaking states meeting at Digha to discuss the Hindi Missal and their other common concerns. Archbishop William D'Souza of Patna, who is the chairman of the meeting, told that the bishops would reflect on how to improve the liturgy and serve our people in a better manner with faith formation and education etc. "The main agenda of the conference this year is finalizing the text for offering the Mass in Hindi," he said said, adding a 12-member committee was working on the translation for the last one year and its draft would be tabled at the conference for approval. The current text of the Hindi Mass is the translation of the older edition of Roman Missal', which was approved at the Second Vatican Council in the early 1960s. The "Roman Missal' is the book containing the prescribed prayers, chants and instructions for the celebration of Mass. It was first published in Latin and then translated into local languages. However, some liturgists during the time of Pope Benedict believed the vernacular translations were not exact and a re-translation was ordered by the Church in the first decade of 2000. The fresh translations in English and several other languages were approved by Rome and effected from December 2010, but the Hindi translation required some corrections. The conference, tenth in a series is organized every two years and the last one was held at Bhopal. It was also held once in Patna in 2000. There are 48 Bishops in the Hindi-speaking states, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan.

Flexible Rigidity

M

aturity is the realization that everything has a purpose, even if we don’t see it. Humans have the mission to make the invisible visible. As I am confined to the house recovering from my various illnesses I am forced to pass my time watching TV. The only guaranteed thing to see on TV, on a 24 x 7 basis, is the News, which I didn’t bother about earlier. I found it more Noise than News with irritating repetitions of the videos and the words. Now I am trying to make sense out of what is happening. With the change in government I have made a Discovery, which I want to share. For Progress there must be “FLEXIBLE RIGIDITY” — While the goals, objectives, values remain the same, fixed and rigid, the approach to these should be flexible. The Railway Budget presented by the NDA government was what the UPA government had prepared. How could it be different? The objective is the same — cheap, fast, safe and reliable transport for the AamAadmi. The bullet train, in my opinion, is inappropriate for India. It cannot be cheap and is not suited for India with its limited and congested land space. The Finance Bill was no different. In fact many experts called it the UPA III Budget. People looked for application of the Gujarat Model, they were disappointed. There is no such model. The objectives of a good government are one — the welfare of the people. Now they say that the difference will be seen through “Execution, Execution, Execution”. The super administrators of the new government made surprise checks on the offices to find 80 executives and staff not at their desks. We were told that the new P.M. doesn’t sleep and keeps the babus on their toes and gets them to work overtime to get the papers ready. Obviously the approach didn’t work as was seen by the stalling of the signing of the WTO Agreement and the much hyped Power Agreement with Nepal. The irrational exuberance of the share market with an all-

time high in the share index has seen the value of the rupee slide to a six month low The work methods of the new government are of the old command and control variety with Fear. The effects of fear cannot be sustained. Good work comes only if people are motivated from within with a purpose. The neighboring countries were invited for the historic swearing in of NaMo a P.M. with a massive support in Parliament. But hardly had the music from the celebrations died down that we see serious Cease Fire violations in Kashmir and turmoil with Sri Lanka. Can we not apply our minds to determine the basic objectives to be achieved in our relations with our neighbors? The proposal to have 49 % F.D.I. in insurance has been stalled. The objective of insurance is not F.D.I. but good insurance coverage for the Indian people and their assets. We boast of our bright managerial talent. Can they not find creative answers to the problems and deficiencies in the insurance system? Why do we have to depend on F.D.I. to bring in this expertize. Why do we adopt the solutions propagated by the top business schools in the West as being the best for India? And as for funds, a recent report has shown that 75 % of money in the economy is unaccounted for. So again shortage of funds for insurance, investment, projects is a myth. The outburst of Rahul Gandhi on

the issue of communal violence was skillfully diverted to an attack on the Gandhi family and the threat of a palace coup. Communal violence is nurtured by projecting the other community as the cause of all our ills — taking away employment opportunities, creating shortages on land, housing, using up scarce resources like water, exploitation, poverty. Obviously in this background the other community must be suppressed, if not eliminated. The 21st Century has been identified as the Age of Enlightenment, the Knowledge Era, 14 years on we see no signs of this being applied in the critical areas of our existence. The new government’s approach on roads, ports, power and other infrastructural projects is no different from what was said earlier. By setting a deadline for clearing all projects by 14th August or some such date will not make any difference. Are we going to study, discover, innovate, create new ways for doing work cheaper, faster, safer with less corruption than before? Where is the application of the Mind? Or is it still dependence on Money — F.D.I., B.O.T. and other methods of financing? Why don’t we adopt the Tata Nano Approach and determine from First Principles what is the lowest cost and least time for completing each task? It is high time that the AamAadmi made their voices heard, stormed into the Well of Decision Making and Action and demand Real Change to achieve our objectives. Genocide of Christians In Iraq Christians Killed, Families Shot in the Faces in Refusal to Convert

A

fearful genocide of Christians is happening in Iraq as one fam ily with eight members was shot in their faces because of their refusal to convert to Islam. Christians are now facing the hapless condition of having their fates limited to three choices: leave, convert to Islam or die. On August 1, Canon Andrew White, also known as the vicar of Baghdad, had witnessed the horrifying condition that Christians were suffering in Iraq. "Todays Pictures are too awful to show. You know I love to show photos but the photo I was sent today was the most awful I have ever seen," White posted in his Facebook page. "A family of 8 all shot through the face laying in a pool of blood with their Bible open on the couch. They would not convert it cost them there life. I thought of asking if anybody wanted to see the picture but it is just too awful to show to anybody. This is Iraq today. The only hope and consolation is that all these dear people are now all with Yesua in Glory." Various reports were echoing the tragic fate that Christians were experiencing in Iraq, under the rule of the Sunni militants. The militants are now seizing control Iraq's biggest Christian town Qaraqosh. An exodus of Christians is happening as they were only given three choices - leave, convert to Islam or face death. These militants were described as more violent than al Qaeda as they are naming all Christians and other ethno-religious community as infidels. Hence, more violent acts are directed towards these "minorities". UN Secretary-General Ban Kimoon had already announced an emergency meeting to discuss the crisis in Iraq with international community. French President Francois Hollande had also called for a meeting aimed at discussing ways to "counter

6

the terrorist threat in Iraq." Speaking with Kurdistan president Masoud Barzani via telephone, Mr Hollande said that Paris is prepared to aid the forces deployed in defence of Iraqi Kurdistan, Reuters reports. However, White who had also established the Foundation for Relief and Reconciliation in the Middle East, had alleged that the British Government is not doing anything to help Christians escape their tragic condition in Iraq. Other Bishops and church leaders echoed the same. Bishop of Clifton Declan Lang, who heads international affairs for the Catholic bishops, said that the British government are not exerting all possible means to help the fleeing Christians. "Where is the biggest number of Iraqi Christians? Not here. Chicago, then Detroit, then Sweden, then Australia and Canada. This country will not allow any Iraqi Christians in. None. Any Iraqi Christians who are here have been here for years... There is no room for newcomers," Lang said. Addressing the Bishops during the Chiswick Christian Centre, he shared that situation for Christians in Iraq had been "disastrous," and Christians are already nearing extinction. He said that a community of 60,000 in 2003 had continued to diminish through years and at present is down to almost nothing.

"For the first time in 1,600 years, no Masses are being celebrated in Mosul. Many Christians have fled to the surrounding Nineveh Plains and into Kurdistan as militants from the Islamic State, formerly the Islamic State of the Levant (ISIS), threaten those who do not subscribe to their fundamentalist ideology." He said that the present situation in Iraq is an act of religious and ethnic cleansing toward Christians as well as many other communities. There had been churches converted into mosques and that " homes of Christians have been daubed with signs that would mark them out as a target for the extremists." The Anglican Bishop of Manchester is calling for the British government to offer asylum to the 30,000 who have fled Mosul since the militants took control. Meanwhile, a spokesman for the government said that UK is "proud" of its record of asylum offered to those who need it and that every need for asylum is carefully considered on its individual merits. As for White's allegation that no Iraqi fleeing the troubles had been granted refuge in Britain, the spokesman said that his allegations were yet to be verify as "information on the detail of the basis of an asylum claim is not routinely recorded on Home Office databases."

Delhi Archbishop Calls For Justice After New Attacks On Christians

he archbishop of New Delhi has urged authorities to take more effective measures in combating religiously motivated violence in the wake of an attack on a Christian church in the north Indian state of Haryana. Vandals damaged two school buses parked in the compound of St. Francis Xavier Church in Rohtak district on Wednesday. In a statement issued on Thursday, Archbishop Anil J. Couto expressed concern over this attack and other incidents. “Reports of other attacks on Christian pastors and prayer groups are very disturbing and we request local authorities take adequate measures to bring to book the miscreants threatening to weaken the social fabric of this great nation,” the statement read. He was referring to an attack on a group of pastors belonging to the Pentecostal Church in Sonepat district of the same state last year. The prelate also quoted media reports alleging that Sangh Parivar groups (family of Hindu nationalist organizations) are collecting details of persons who converted to Islam and Christianity in western Uttar Pradesh and plan to carry out shuddhikaran – attempts to re-convert them to Hinduism. “This move by fundamentalist groups is a grave assault on the fundamental rights of individuals and peoples’

groups,” Archbishop Couto said. Many incidents of Christian persecution have been reported across India with at least seven Christians killed and 4,000 targeted in anti-Christian violence in the country in 2013, he noted. John Dayal, member of the Indian government’s National Integration Council, told ucanews.com that there has been a sharp rise in hate campaigns against Christians by political organizations. “This threat of purging Christians from villages extends from Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh to now Uttar Pradesh, and to the borders of the national capital of New Delhi,” he said. Dayal said the threats from Sangh Parivar groups were heard in a big way during the early years (from 1999-2004) of the National Democratic Alliance government led by pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (Indian people’s party), especially in the tribal areas of Gujarat and Rajasthan. “The Sangh Parivar has always nurtured a deep hostility against the Christian community because of its position on the emancipation of Dalits and its empowerment of the marginalized including tribals,” Dayal said. “That is why it makes allegations against Christians about conversions and then attacks churches, priests, nuns and other landless peasantry and

the poor,” he said. Dayal said the ideologues of the Sangh Parivar have nurtured hostility towards religious minorities. “The sangh wants India to be a Hindu nation-state with minorities taking second grade status.” He urged the Indian government to send out strong signals that the rule of law would be enforced, and religious minorities and their freedom of faith would be fully protected.

Challenges On Being A Jesuit In India On The 200th Anniversary Of The Society’s Restoration Article on Restoration of Society of Jesus On August 7th 2014, the Society of Jesus will commemorate the bicentennial of its Restoration (after it was suppressed in 1773). The Article below is meant to be a reflection on the Challenges which the Jesuits in India face today in the context of this Commemoration.

This year 2014 is a special moment of grace for Jesuits all over the world as we commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Restoration of the Society of Jesus, by Pope Pius VII in 1814. At the outset, it is important to have a glimpse at the historical context and some of the facts which led to the suppression of the Society of Jesus in 1773. Ignatius of Loyola was a person with a difference. Because of his vision, his spiritual depth and apostolic zeal, he had the courage to translate his dreams into action. In 1540, the Society of Jesus was born and a little over 200 years in 1750, Jesuits numbered 23,000 worldwide! In those 200 years Jesuits had established themselves and involved themselves in all kinds of apostolic activities from becoming ‘the school masters of Europe in 1600’, to accompanying individuals and groups in their spiritual growth through the Spiritual Exercises. They became synonymous for their loyalty to the Pope, and for their bold and creative initiatives. They also had important connections with the high and mighty of Europe. They demonstrated an uncanny ability to go like their founder Ignatius where others dared not go. The theology of the Jesuits was pastoral and liberal, unlike the rigidity which was espoused by the Jansenists of the middle ages. Philosophers like Blaise Pascal, a Jansenist, took on the Jesuits who were exhorting people to be loyal to the demands of faith. In the late 17th century and early 18th century, the Jesuits had established several missions called ‘reductions’ in South America. This was done with the approval of Spain. However, in 1750 the

8

Treaty of Madrid redrew the boundaries between the colonies of Portugal and Spain in South America. Seven of these reductions (now in Portuguese territory) had to be dismantled and relocated. What ensued was terrible violence and bloodshed between the native Guarani tribe from the Jesuit missions and the troops from Europe. Portugal laid the entire blame on the Jesuits who had taken the side of the tribals. In 1758, there was an attempt to assassinate King Joseph I of Portugal. The Jesuits were also blamed for this and charged with treason and in a matter of time, Portugal became the first country to expel all Jesuits from its territories which included its colonies in South America. In 1762, France banned the Jesuits for some frivolous reason but also because of the influence of the Jansenists and other anti-Christians in the country. On April 2nd 1767, a royal decree was read out to all the Jesuit communities in Spain expelling them from that country and their colonies, because of Jesuit involvement in the riots against taxation. This led to tremendous pressure on Pope Clement XIII to abolish the entire Society of Jesus throughout the world. He steadfastly refused to do so and continued to champion the Society of Jesus till his sudden death on February 2nd 1769. Pope Clement XIV who succeeded him was apparently a pawn in the hands of powerful vested interests of Europe. Threatened with a schism in the Catholic Church, he finally gave in and on August 16th 1773, through his brief Dominus ac Redemptor, he suppressed the Society of Jesus. Very strangely, the document begins with a

text from Jeremiah that is not sufficient only “to plant and to build but it is also important “to uproot and to destroy. The document goes on to assert that the Society of Jesus had always been an object of dissension clearly implying that the Jesuits are trouble-makers and rebellious! Thanks to Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia, the Society of Jesus was not wiped out. So when Clement XIV issued the brief of suppression, Catherine refused to obey it and did not permit the Bishops in her Empire to endorse it. It was due to her patronage and later on because of Ferdinand the Duke of Parma, the Society never died. Above all, there was Joseph Pignatelli with his undaunted zeal and total commitment to the life and mission of the Society, the Jesuits continued to survive. Towards the end of the 18th century, Europe went through a tremendous amount of violence and mayhem. The Napoleonic wars and the French revolution brought about great suffering to the people. More and more, the Church and Society of Europe

clamoured for the return of the Jesuits fully aware of the way they had contributed to every dimension of society. Finally, on August 7th 1814, Pope Pius VII through his brief Sollicitudo Onnium Ecclesiarum ((the Care of All Churches) restored the Society of Jesus completely. For forty-one years, the Jesuits were suppressed. The most powerful of Europe did everything they could to destroy the Jesuits once and for all. Today 200 years later, we need to thank God for those great men who refused to give up, who refused to be discouraged and who refused to die! It is important at this juncture, therefore to look back at some of the dimensions that led to the suppression of the Society. If one got to carefully analyse, then they would fall under the following: Commitment Commitment was the hallmark of the Jesuits. A commitment to the vision and mission of the Society, to the poor and to the signs of the times – the Jesuits were neither pushovers nor people who could be compromised. Their unflinching zeal ensured, that there were enough of enemies who would try to put them in place at any time. Contemplation Thanks to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, the Jesuits were encouraging people to become more and more contemplatives in action. They insisted on a spiritual depth but at the same time in the service of the others. This was in complete variance to the hollow ritualistic religion that was meted out and propagated at that time. This dimension gave new meaning and purpose to several, very specially to the youth of the day. Courage In GC35, we are reminded that “Jesus confronted the powers that opposed his kingdom and that opposition led him to the death on the Cross, a death which he freely accepted in keeping with his mission” (D3#14). This is exactly what the Jesuits prior to the suppression were doing. They confronted the rich and powerful of their times, they took sides with the Guarani

18 August 2014

Indians in South America, they sided with the ordinary folk when they were over-taxed, what mattered most was that the faith that does justice becomes a reality in their lives and in the lives of others. Conscience GC34 in Decree 3 “Our Mission and Justice” highlights new dimensions of justice which include the full range of human rights. This powerful Decree reminds us that “The promotion of justice requires, before all else, our own continuing personal conversion – finding Jesus Christ in the brokenness of our world, living in solidarity with the poor and outcast, so that we can take up their cause under the standard of Cross. Our sensitivity for such a mission will be most affected by frequent direct contact with these “friends of the Lord,” from whom we can often learn from faith. Some insertion into the world of the poor should therefore be part of the life of every Jesuit.” (#17) In the days prior to the suppression of the Society of Jesus, the Jesuits very effectively touched the conscience of the world they lived in. They had rich powerful friends but the Jesuits had no fear to take these friends on and these latter soon became their deadliest enemies. Creativity Another reason why the Jesuits were suppressed was surely because of their ability to have creative and contextual responses. They were able to transcend the narrow confines of the status quo. The context at that time challenged them to go to new frontiers. They easily became a threat to those who would rather have confined them

to the Church or their particular institutions. The same applies to us today. The new context in which “we live our mission today is marked by profound changes, acute conflicts and new possibilities”. (GC35 DC3 #8) Having reflected on a bit of history and some of the characteristics that were the hallmark of the Jesuits - presuppression, during the forty-one years of suppression and immediately afterwards - it is necessary for us to see how the Society of Jesus can and should “restore” itself today in the 21st century. In the last fifty years, we have had the Second Vatican Council which “opened for all, the doors and windows” of the Church; historic General Congregations particularly 32, 34 and 35 and as recently as March 2013, a Jesuit has become Pope Francis and he seems to have embarked on the restoration of the Church and very significantly through his first Apostolic Exhortation “Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel)”. For us Jesuits in South Asia, restoration of the Church and Society could and should mean the following: Availability How available are we to go to new frontiers? to go to places where no one dares to go? to think “out-of-the-box?” and as Pope Francis reminds us “to be priests without frontiers and to literally “smell of the sheep?” Availability presupposes an attitude of self-giving; that we are not tied down or tied up with our pet projects or institutions. At the same time, we need to identify ourselves with the poor and marginalized and create space for them in our own lives. (Contd.. on p. 10)

(Contd.. from p. 9) Articulation We are not sufficiently articulate in highlighting the context, the challenges and concerns of today. Many of us seem to be compromised (cfr. Jesus’ temptations in the desert) with power, privileges, possessions and positions! As long as we can remain in our comfort zones, we fight shy of serious research, objective analysis and having the courage to communicate our stand to the wider world. If we seriously do so, many of us will surely lose our places of privilege and the patronage from powerful vested interests. It is also important for all of us to do a reality check and to see who are our friends, with who do we / or institutions identify with. Action Any meaningful action for a Jesuit necessitates contemplation and our closeness with Christ means “to follow Christ bearing his Cross means opening ourselves with him to every thirst that afflicts humanity today.” (GC35

DC2 #12) As Jesuits, we need to act to respond constructively and positively to the context which challenges us and beckons us. The substantial actions of the Jesuits was a clear reason for the suppression of the Society but these men were not afraid, they were able to give and not count the cost. Fr. Adolfo Nicolas , the Superior General in a letter dated November 14th, 2013 wrote “I pray that our grateful commemoration of this 200th anniversary of the Society’s reestablishment might be blessed with a greater appropriation of our way of life and a more creative, generous and joyful commitment to give our lives in service for the greater glory of God.” This Jubilee Year indeed challenges every single Jesuit to make important and greater strides towards the ‘Magis”. We can surely do so through greater Availability, courageous Articulation and committed Action. (* Fr. omputer engineer, Ray Tomlinson invented internet based email in late 1971. Under ARPAnet several major innovations occurred: email (or electronic mail), the ability to send simple messages to another person across the network (1971). Ray Tomlinson worked as a computer engineer for Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN), the company hired by the United States Defense Department to build the first Internet in 1968. Ray Tomlinson was experimenting with a popular program he wrote called SNDMSG that the ARPANET programmers and researchers were using on the network computers (Digital PDP-10s) to leave messages for each other. SNDMSG was a "local" electronic message program. You could only leave messages on the computer that you were using for other persons using that computer to read.

“Bandra’s Landmark Shrine” On Celuloid by Fr Alfonso Elengikal, SSP

A

40-minute new documentary film on the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount (Mount Mary Shrine), Bandra (Mumbai) will be released on 15 August, the Feast of the Assumption of our Lady. Titled “The Mount of Faith”, the documentary will be formally released by Rev. Msgr Nereus Rodrigues, Rector of the Basilica also called “Bandra’s Landmark Shrine,” during a solemn Mass at the Shrine Basilica, in the presence of a large number of special invitees and thousands of devotees of Mother Mary. Mount Mary Church is the most popular religious shine, Christian or non-Christian, in the metropolitan city of Mumbai, and possibly the whole of Maharashtra. Come September, all eyes will be drawn to and all roads will lead to the “ Bandra Church”, and most Mumbaikars, irrespective of caste

tees from all faiths, popular film stars and political leaders included, come to the church to spend some quite moments with Mother Mary, and to enjoy the serenity and calmness of the Shrine, which they cannot find anywhere else. Bollywood actor Salman Khan personally testifies: “this place has an amazing aura. I enjoy a very special peace,

and creed, will make sure that they are part of the 8-day colourful Festival at the Mount, starting on the Sunday after 8 September, the Birthday of Mary. The solemn Novena, lasting nine days will begin on 30th August. It is estimated that over 10 lakh people visit the 400-year old Marian Shrine during the festive season, every year, to pay homage to Mary, the Mother of Christ. Even on ordinary days of the week, thousands of devo-

here. I have come here a million times…. I do not ask for anything special. Mother Mary knows why I am here!” Pope Paul VI visited the Basilica in 1964, when he was in Mumbai to participate in the Eucharistic Congress. Pope John Paul II visited the historic Shrine, in 1986, when he came to India to beatify Sr Alphonsa Muttathupadam and Fr Chavara Kuriakose Elias of Kerala.

St Paul Multimedia, led by Fr Alexander Anandam and his Pauline team, has successfully captured in celluloid the true spirit of true devotion one experiences at Mount Mary, coupled with the scenic beauty around, and the amazing aura which Salman Khan and numerous other devotees speak of, in The Mount of Faith, filmed in collaboration with the Basilica of Our Lady of the Mount. Produced by Andrea Lavy Pinto, Lavy Bernard Pinto and Daniel Meinard, under the banner of Sandhya Films and Creations, and ably directed by Etienne Coutinho, the film also systematically documents the historic background of the Shrine with many a theological inputs, as well. The documentary also vividly records powerful testimonies of many people from a variety of religious traditions and walks of life, like that of Salman Khan, mentioned earlier. In addition, the film beautifully incorporates into it “Insights on the Mary of the Bible” given by Most Rev. Agnelo Gracias, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese and Professor of Mariology at St Pius X Seminary, Goregaon, Mumbai. Released well in time for the annual Festival, and marketed by St Paul Multimedia, “The Mount of Faith” is a beautiful gift the Paulines bring to the Archdiocese of Bombay, as a souvenir of its Centenary of foundation.

P

Pope To Boost Booming Asia Church With Korea Trip

ope Francis travels to South Korea this week with a mes sage of peace for the divided peninsula on his first papal visit to Asia, where the Catholic Church is undergoing dramatic growth. The 77-year-old will fly into Seoul in a trip also aimed at making up for his predecessor, Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI, who never visited Asia during his eight-year papacy. Vatican watchers say the pope will address the whole continent on the seven-day trip where the number of Catholics, although only 3.2 per cent of the population, is rocketing. With the Catholic Church dogged by increasing secularism in the West, "it's a chance for the pontiff to flash a thumbs-up to a region upon which Catholicism is increasingly reliant", said Vatican expert John Allen, who writes for the Boston Globe. In January, the pope will visit Sri Lanka and the Philippines - the region's largest Catholic country - to nurture the burgeoning number of faithful and

would-be clerics from China to India, Myanmar and Vietnam. In South Korea he will preside over a beatification ceremony for 124 Korean martyrs and is expected to use his speech to warn of a recent escalation in anti-Christian persecution in some countries, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria and Somalia. In the last census to include religious affiliation in 2005, close to 30 per cent of South Koreans identified themselves as Christian. The majority are Protestants, but Catholics are the fastest growing group with around 5.3 million adherents - just over 10 per cent of the population.

In North Korea, the church is allowed to operate only within the confines of the state-controlled Korean Catholics Association. The country is often ranked worst for oppression of Christians by international watchdogs. The pope will hold a mass in Seoul's cathedral for reconciliation between the two Koreas which remain technically at war because the 1950-53 conflict ended in a ceasefire rather than a peace treaty. Seoul's Cardinal Andrew Yeom Soo-jung, who crossed into North Korea for a historic one-day visit in May, hoped the pope would bring about "a great miracle" for dialogue between the two Koreas. The Vatican ruled out reports that the pope may pray at the demilitarised zone. Religious watchers have also speculated that the pope might take the chance to travel on to Beijing in a bid to ease a feud between the church and the Chinese government, which has its own state-controlled Catholic church.

Pope Appoints Special Envoy For Iraq

News from Iraq painful: Pope Francis Pope Francis on Sunday said the ongoing violence in conflict-hit Iraq ‘pains’ him.

P

ope Francis is dispatching Cardinal Fernando Filoni as his personal envoy to northern Iraq, where Islamist militias have sent thousands of Christians and other religious minorities fleeing for their lives, the Vatican said Friday (Aug. 8). The Vatican announced the appointment of Filoni, a former papal nuncio to Iraq and Jordan, only a day after the pope launched a fresh appeal for the welfare of Christians affected by the violence there. The Vatican’s chief spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, said Filoni would leave in the next few days for Iraqi Kurdistan, amid reports that as many as 100,000 Christians have been forced from their homes by militants from the Islamic State. “The pope wanted to mobilize, given the serious ongoing emergency,” said Lombardi. Filoni is expected to deliver a personal message of solidarity and support from the pope as well as financial aid to those affected by the wave of violence. “It is too early to say when he will leave and what his itinerary will be,” Lombardi told journalists. “The mission is still being prepared.” Iraqi authorities this week reported that the Islamic State militia kidnapped hundreds of women and girls from the Yazidi religious minority after invading the northwestern town of Sinjar. The pope also called on all nuncios, or ambassadors to foreign governments, in the region to convey his message to local authorities and churches. The nuncios are expected to be called to a meeting in Rome in September, Lombardi said. Filoni, who comes from the southern Italian town of Taranto, was papal nuncio to Jordan and Iraq from 2001 to 2006 and remained in Baghdad throughout the allied invasion and years of occupation. He now heads the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples.

T “

he news coming from Iraq pains me. Lord, teach us to live in soli darity with all those who suffer,” Pope Francis tweeted. “Those driven from their homes in Iraq depend on us. I ask all to pray, and for those who are able, to give material assistance,” he said. In an earlier tweet, he had said: “I ask the international community to protect all those suffering violence in Iraq.” Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on all Iraqi political parties to work toward the formation of a new government that would be able to confront the threat from the armed group, the Islamic State (IS), indiablooms.com reported. In a late night statement on Saturday from his spokesperson, Ban called on the political parties “to abide by the constitutional timeline that governs the nomination of the Prime Minister.” He also called for “reason and wisdom to prevail” and urged all leaders in Iraq to form “a broad-based government that is acceptable to all components of Iraqi society.” Such a government should be able to mobilize the nation to confront the threat from IS in a way that will bring

security and stability to the whole country, Ban added. Iraqi politicians on July 15 chose Salim al-Jubour as the new Speaker of the Council of Representatives, and Fuad Ma’soum as the new President on July 24. Per the Iraqi Constitution, the political leaders have until the end of Sunday to nominate a Prime Minister, who would then form a new Government. In his statement, Ban noted that as the Organization and the international community are closely following the political developments in Iraq, he also remains “deeply concerned” about the evolving humanitarian and security situation in the country. The situation remains particularly dire on Jebel Sinjar, or Sinjar Mountain, where an estimated 50,000 people, many of them women, children and the elderly, are believed to be trapped since ISIL displaced them from their homes one week ago. Aid workers are particularly concerned about high temperatures in the northern area. Those can reach 50 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) at this time of year.

Interpretations n Evangilisation

T

here are 3 types of people – lethargic people are just drifting in life with no aim or ideal. They function on whims and fancies of the wind. Passionate types are driven by desire and act for a selfish end. They are stressed out and agitated, incapable of enjoying the fruits of their own labor. Only the one who sacrifices to a higher alter enjoy the world. There is no greater enjoyment than that of sharing something. Have you given something to somebody? That’s why people enjoy giving gifts so much. It’s a sheer delight. When you give something to somebody – it may not be of much value – but just the way, just the gesture that you give, satisfies tremendously. Just think of a person whose whole life is a gift, whose every moment is sharing – he lives in heaven and He is Jesus. Some of those who heard Jesus when He taught in the temple interpreted it wrongly which lead to them becoming insecure and hence they leveled false charges against Jesus and got Him crucified. People interpret wrongly to seek glory, recognition and respect. This need emerges from a deep sense of inadequacy. They probably feel inferior to someone. Hence they depend on the others to bolster them. Words are dangerous...every possibility of being interpreted wrongly or misunderstood. An old lady who was walking her dog decided to go into the local supermarket, which did not allow dogs. She tied the animal to a fire hydrant. No sooner was the dog tied than every loose dog in the neighborhood started sniffing this defenseless animal. The cop on the corner, observing what was happening, called to the old woman and told her that she could not leave her dog there alone. She asked him why and he replied, "Lady, your dog is in heat." She answered, "Eat, she'll eat anything." He countered, "The dog should be bred."

18 August 2014

Don Aguiar The old lady replied, "She'll eat bread, cake--anything you give her she'll eat." In complete frustration he said, "That dog should be laid!" The old woman stared directly into his eyes and answered, "So lay her! I always wanted a police dog." Words are very troublesome because words carry the past; they are made by the past, they are overburdened by the past. Any word is dangerous, because its meaning comes from the past. And then the problem is: to use the words which come from the past--because there are no other words-but to give them such a twist and turn that they can give a little insight into a new meaning. The words are old, the bottles are old, but the wine is new. The Squire and his Lady were Chief Patrons of the Agricultural Show, and after the opening ceremony they dutifully walked round, mixing with the tenants and peasantry, and looking at the exhibits. But his Lordship spent so much time in the beer tent that her Ladyship wandered off to admire the prize bull. Never was a male animal so splendidly equipped. "My, but that's a fine beast you have there, Giles," she said to the yokel in charge. "Yes, my Lady, he be champion, and father o'champions." "Go on, tell me about him." "Well, M'am, this here bull went to stud three hundred times last year." "Indeed? Well, go over to his Lordship will you, my good fellow, and tell him there's a bull here went to stud three hundred times in one year, will you." Giles dutifully trotted up to Squire and gave the message.... "Very interesting indeed," was his comment, "always the same cow, I presume?" "Oh, no indeed, Sir, three hundred different cows." "Aha, go and tell her Ladyship that, will you."

The second thing is: interpret it -Be interpretative! Interpret it in such a way that it comes closer to your idea. That can always be done; a little skill is need. A little logic, a little play with words that's all. It is not much of a problem; you can manage it. If you have really been a Catholic it will not be difficult at all. Listen to this: The Irish navies were digging the road outside a house full of made-up floozies. A parson came along, pulled down his hat and went in. Says Pat to Mike, "Did you see that! Just what you'd expect with one of them parsons!" Soon after, a rabbi arrived, turned up his collar, and in he went. Says Mike to Pat, "Is it not a terrible thing that the priest of God's Own People should go in there!" Lastly a Catholic priest arrived, wrapped his cloak round his head, and dived quickly into the bawdy house. "Pat isn't that dreadful now, to think that one of the girls must have been taken ill." This is an interpretation. When the rabbi goes, it is something else; when the priest goes, it is something else; when the Catholic priest arrives... you can change the interpretation. There is no problem in it: now some girl seems to be ill. Another interpretation is when we pray "Give us our daily bread." BUT in reality we have to create it; there is nobody to give it to us. You know you have to search for work as in our times it is the work of science; religion has nothing to do with it. We should start demarking lines: what can be done by science should be done by science, what can be done by technology should be done by technology. If your car has stopped and you have run out of gas, you don't just kneel down by your car and start praying, "Give us our daily gas." This is not the way--it is not going to happen. You know you have to search for a gas pump! In our country India, you will see (Contd.. on p. 18)

Changing Face Of Love At Various Stages Of Life

W

hat a teenager seeks 3. Should be serious about studies, have in love is not the same a definite vision for as the one in his forthe future, and yet not ties. A look at how the prospects be geeky or boring. of love changes at every age and Should be able to enstage in life. tertain.

An ideal relationship often starts on the note of 'Till-Death-Do-Us-Apart' vows and fairy-tale weddings. However, relationships in the real world are driven more by practicalities than emotions. In fact, the dynamics between a couple change with time and gets more interesting. Let's take a look into the expectations that couples have of each other at different ages:

When you are a teenager: The phase of a teenager is all about a newness and discovery. Being attracted to the opposite sex is a part of that newness, but can It can also cause a lot of confusion as he or she is not just dealing with emotions, but hormones and peer pressure. And it's these factors that influence his or her expectations when they fall in love. Some of the things that they look out for in their relationship includes: 1. Good looks form the most important part of this relationship, everyone wants their partner to be charming . 2. Should have fancy add-ons like an expensive ride, latest gadgets or branded belongings to show off in front of friends and others.

4. Should be courageous as well as intelligent, and be able to overcome the odds when required. 5. Should also have enough time for each other.

When you are a young adult: You may have crossed the stage of puppy love, but you are still not done with exploring the world of relationship. While you at a stage when you've learned to make decisions, yet when it comes to matters of the heart, not everyone wants to settle down at this stage. So the things that a 20-something looks out for includes: 1. Should have a high-flying career with larger-than-life goals. 2. Should be financially settled, as well as have several investments like an own house/ car. 3. Should be willing to support each other in their respective careers as well as assist their personal growth. 4. Should give enough space to each other, without being narrow minded and envious about the partner's success. 5. Should also stand like a rock in crisis and provide emotional support when needed.

When you turn middle-aged: Believe it or not, love and romance is said to be best experienced by middleaged couples. One of the reason being that most people come into their own when they turn 40 or 50, and are not governed by romantic notions. They have been through the storm, know the reality and don't depend on any one person for their happiness.

So what they tend to generally

seek in their partners are : 1. Emotional strength rather than physical perfections; the latter is the least of their worries. 2. Dependability, where the partners should always be there for each other. 3. Attention, which translates in the relationship not getting eclipsed by the one shared with their children. 4. Sharing and executing their retirement plans together, which includes a holiday home and fat savings 5. Encouragement and support for one another's achievements in life — personal and professional.

When you grow old: An extension of the middle-aged, growing old does not seem to have a debilitating effect on love and romance. On the contrary, the most satisfying relationship has been experienced by those in this age group. The quality of relationship is given more premium over factors like attraction by the older lot, who tend to seek out: 1. Companionship and bonding with like-minded people. It's the biggest criteria for a relationship at this age. 2. Selfless devotion and willingness to take care of each other. 3. An easy understanding with each other, without being too vocal or demonstrative about it. 4. Transparency in their dealing with each other, especially in matters of finance, investments, properties, etc. 5. Compatibility and less drama that is beneficial to their health.

Do All Things In His Name

I

n keeping with the truth, Paul, an apostle of Jesus wrote a letter to the Colossians with reference to the New Life in Christ. Paul drew them together pleading with the community to let Christ dominate their lives and for all the new Christians to be grateful. He told them to teach one another the word of the Lord by wisdom, to sing and recite the psalms. “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Col.3:17). As haunting as the threat of a stern God had been (in the Old Testament), the significance of Christ Jesus, his trust and mercy went beyond the threat to a new covenant with the Lord and Creator as a caring Father. Yesterday, August 17 was Justice Sunday in the liturgy. The prophet Isaiah had spoken with an existential angst in his voice, the words of the Lord, “ Keep justice and do righteousness, for soon my salvation will come, and my deliverance be revealed”. This was not an illusion of serenity, it would soon become a reality with the coming of Christ, and the good news in His name as redeemer of the world.

Do all things in His name. Help the weak, the sick and the

old in the name of Jesus. In the name of Jesus support your parish activities whenever possible. In His name build bridges of unity in the fellowship. As a person radiate the image of a Christbearer to the non-believer. In his name create a challenge for the future: encourage the family rosary, instill a thanksgiving to every meal, especially at dinner time when the family comes together. Make it a less obvious but equally important event to attend Sunday Mass, and to receive the Eucharist. Priests, religious and the laity have a legitimate right to be messengers in his name. There’s a lively cluster of those outside the faith reaching out to know about the Word of God. It is a remarkable network open to fishers-ofmen. In his name much can be done surprisingly with success. Still, it is the Will of God the ultimate authority to perform wonders when one takes the name of His Son Jesus. Children are the next generation in the faith; the next men and women to be mothers, fathers and grandparents. For them the good values and influence must come from you. Make a change by projecting your life in his name. St. Paul said: “ … do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus”. Make it a Christian dream where there are no vulnerabilities, where the people of God can be active workers in the mission fields of pastoral service. A man and his family living on the fringe of the city was cut away from having a regular city job. He was forced to do odd chores for his neighbors to earn a few rupees. His wife and fifteenyear-old daughter would often go to sleep without having a proper meal. Regardless of the hard life his family never failed to say their customary prayers. He never lost faith in Christ, always in the firm belief that Jesus would help his family. “ Jesus, save my wife and daughter, I need your help and trust in you. For myself I need nothing !” God was pleased to hear this. A few months later a foreign film crew and their talent

BY MELVYN BROWN scouts were searching the neighborhood for a girl, around fifteen, to play the role of a historic character. They found the man’s daughter, auditioned her and finally gave the family a contract, along with a posh flat. The girl’s parents were employed as studio helpers . The man’s prayer had been heard – his prayers in the name of Jesus. In the Gospel of John (14:13.14) it is clearly written : “ I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.” The evidence suggests that God is pleased to help. He has sympathy for those who turn to Him, Especially in the name of His Son. The internet has a great database to know more about the love of God, and for His followers on how to take up the shield in Jesus’ name for His greater glory. At the other end of the spectrum nothing less will do if we must act with the name of Jesus in our life today. This would mean a radical change in our way of understanding the creator, Lord and redeemer. “ I will do whatever you ask in my name…”(Jn.14:13). This is not a desert tradition in spirituality going back to the Old Covenant, but a New order of a God of love, forgiveness and mercy. A God who is willing to touch the heart of His children. It is easier to say what something is not than to state exactly what it is. The Lord is prepared to grant our wishes if we do things in His name. This outlook is based not on human perception, not on the philosophy of man, but on the divine will of God. Pope Francis, on a three days visit to the Holy Land recently, said : “ Join me in heartfelt prayer to God for the gift of peace.” (Time). The pontiff’s stay was a success and his invitation to both Presidents of Israel and Palestine to visit the Vatican was accepted. All this was done in His name.

17

(Contd.. from p. 15) one thing happening: the intelligent core of Western youth is turning more and more towards meditation, but the Eastern masses are turning more and more towards Christianity. Our country would like more Mother Teresa’s in out here than anything else, naturally, because bread is needed. If you look around our country you will find only the poor people being converted to Christianity; not a single rich man is converted to Christianity. Beggars, orphans, widows, aboriginals, catholic’s who can and cannot manage even one meal every day, and they are being converted to Christianity. It appeals to them because bread is their problem but interpreted by the Christian evangelist or sect leaders as evangelization. The likes of these Christian evangelists or sects seek to prescriptively constrict the Bible to fit their own preconceived predilections and – by not being firmly questioned by the Clergy or for that matter anyone else – have now assumed an intimidating posture. Moreover, in my view, their reductionist zeal to reduce the entire canvas of our Bible to only the undoubtedly requirements of their need, distorts our plural faith by selectively – over romanticizing only one part and ignoring the rest, thereby encouraging distortion of the Holy Bible. The real danger is that the unwarranted Christian evangelization of such people seems to have the blessings of a well established lobby that are against Catholism. God forbid, if a time comes when Christianity will be ruled by the

diktats of these Christian evangelists or sects on what they read, what they think, how they pray and how they behave. This has been the strategy of the Christian Evangelist or sects. He can dominate you only if you are poor, only if you are starving--because when you are poor and starving and miserable, you are bound to fall at his feet because he is the mediator between God and you. The Christian Evangelist or sects seems to know it all, strutting around with an arrogant swagger, demanding rather than requesting, knowing rather than seeking. But scratch the surface and what do you find? None the less one is also of the opinion that the Church leadership should become more supportive to the faithful. It is a reality that laymen are dissatisfied with the way they are being treated by the Church leadership. The threat from the Christian Evangelist or sects could be solved if the Church leaders give all kinds of support to the faithful, not spiritual alone,

Inspiration! Respecting Yourself

S

elf respect is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself. In a world that breeds insecurity, you need to find ways to respect yourself. Personal acceptance is difficult to accomplish, but it’s certainly possible. If you’re having trouble, here are some ways to respect yourself: The Golden Rule: Since you were a child, you’ve probably heard that you should “treat others the way you want to be treated.” However, we often treat others better than we treat ourselves. We tear ourselves down, call ourselves names, and emotionally abuse ourselves. One of the ways to respect yourself is to stop acting like you deserve that abuse. Remember that you’re a valuable person worthy of happiness, and you’ll start to treat yourself differently. Ignore Society”s Say: Don’t listen to everything the media tells you. It’s okay if you don’t have the same morals that the world tries to enforce on you. If you’re happy with the way you’re living your life, that’s all that matters. You get to determine what your definition of ‘respect’ is. It’s certainly not the same for everyone. Higher Expectations: Your expectations of others shouldn’t be unrealistically high, but you shouldn’t take less than you deserve either. If you let people get away with treating you poorly, then they’ll continue to do so. You have to show others that you have confidence, and won’t be pushed around. You don’t have to start a fight with someone who disrespects you, but you can simply walk away. Define “Respect” In order to respect yourself, you have to

18 August 2014

determine what your definition of ‘respect’ is. Different people view the word in different ways. Create a mental list of all of the qualities that you associate with respect. Maybe ‘kindness’ is on your list, or ‘intelligence.’ By mapping out what you believe respect entails, it’ll be easier for you to try to make yourself into a respectable person. Offer An Opinion Don’t do something simply because someone orders you to do so. If your friends are all going out, but you would rather stay home, then stay home. If you’re peer pressured into things, you’re not doing what you really want to do. You have to be yourself, and put your foot down when the time comes. Just Don’t Judge The nicer you are to others, the easier it will be to be nicer to yourself. Remember the golden rule that we discussed earlier. It”s important to treat others kindly, and they”ll most likely return the favor. Whenever you find yourself insulting someone, even if it”s only in your mind, try to balance the negativity out by coming up with something you like about them. You don”t have to say it aloud. You can keep it all in your head. Daily Compliments All of the negative thoughts that fly through your mind on a daily basis are unhealthy. Try to compliment yourself at least once every single day. Think about a moment during the day where you were proud of something you accomplished, or just think about how proud you are of yourself for getting through the day at all. Before long, it’ll be easier to compliment yourself, and your self respect and confidence will skyrocket.

Cycle of Evil

T

here was once a king who was so cruel and unjust that his subjects yearned for his death or dethronement. However, one day he surprised them all by announcing that he had decided to turn over a new leaf. “No more cruelty, no more injustice,” he promised, and he was as good as his word. He became known as the ‘Gentle Monarch’. Months after his transformation one of his ministers plucked up enough courage to ask him what had brought about his change of heart. And the king answered, “As I was galloping through my forests I caught sight of a fox being chased by a hound. The fox escaped into his hole but not before the hound had bitten into its leg and lamed it for life. Later I rode into a village and saw the same hound there. It was barking at a man. Even as I watched, the man picked up a huge stone and flung it at the dog, breaking its leg. The man had not gone far when he was kicked by a horse. His knee was shattered and he fell to the ground, disabled for life. The horse began to run but it fell into a hole and broke its leg. Reflecting on all that had happened, I thought: ‘Evil begets evil. If I continue in my evil ways, I will surely be overtaken by evil’. So I decided to change”. The minister went away convinced that the time was ripe to overthrow the king and seize the throne. Immersed in thought, he did not see the steps in front of him and fell, breaking his neck. Moral: Cycle of Deeds always gives us back what we give to others. If we do good to others, our good will happen, If we do bad to others, our turn will also come.
