Pope Francis Plays The Good Shepherd's Role To Perfection
Pope Francis melted hearts when he snuggled up with a baby lamb at a living nativity scene on January 6, 2014, during the holiday of Epiphany. The adorable scene was staged at St. Alfonso Maria de' Liguori parish church, in the outskirts of Rome. In addition to being one of the most adorable pictures that has ever been taken of Pope Francis, the lamb is a powerful Christian symbol that has special significance to his papacy… …Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of a pastoral approach in ministry, and once said that priests should stay close to the vulnerable and be “shepherds living with the smell of the sheep.” This little sheep agrees. The lamb is sometimes seen as a metaphor for Jesus, who is known as the "Lamb of God." The title comes from John 1:29, where John the Baptist sees Jesus and exclaims, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." Other Biblical lamb references include the passage in Isaiah 11:6 which predicts a time when, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb..." which is usually misquoted as "When the lion shall lie down with the lamb." The pope also made time for some geese, a bunny and some kids of the human variety during his visit.

Cynthia Baptista Awarded ‘Samaj Bhushan Puraskar’
Vasai: Ms. Cynthia Baptista, director of Apang Seva, Vasai, a retired teacher of St. Aloysius School, Vasai is awarded Samaj Bhushan Puraskar for her social work by the Khristi Kruti Samiti in Yashvantrao Chavhana Natyagruha, Aurangabad. Ms. Cynthia organizes various beneficial programmes right through the year for the odd 300 physically handicapped persons in Vasai and running a special school and a workshop for the mentally challenged people. Her efforts continue nonstop for the last 26 years. One such programme is the day-long annual Rally of the challenged people. This year’s 27th Rally will be held in St. Joseph’s Sr. College, Satpalle, Vasai on Sunday, 19 Jan. 20114. Cynthia does not take government subsidy nor accept foreign funds. She says she gets enough and more to run the school without fees and even feed the 25 inmates daily with midday meal. Three years ago Abhang Bhavan, a behive of the activities of Apang Seva was blessed by Archbishop Felix Machado.

Manmohan Singh Leaves Legacy Of Disappointments
ndian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s announce ment in his New Year press conference that he would retire at the end of his second term – whether his United Progressive Alliance win or lose May elections – surprised nobody. Singh sheepishly said that history would be more kind to him than his political opponents and the media, BY JOHN DAYAL which have in recent years delighted in framing India’s 13th prime minister as a man of inaction and underachievement. It is a moot point as to which aspects of his 10-year leadership, and five years as finance minister in the 1990s, Singh is banking on to claim his place in history. The Oxford-educated economist, former United Nations official and economic advisor to previous governments will be best remembered for dismantling economic controls installed by Jawaharlal Nehru after independence in 1947 up until Indira Gandhi’s premiership into the late 1970s. Singh was the man that demolished “License Raj,” the notorious red tape around India’s previously planned economy. Opening the economy to Western and Japanese capital investment – according to some a diktat of the International Monetary Fund – helped to create India’s booming IT and telecoms sectors. But there was no accompanying safety net for the poor and marginalized. After initial annual growth rates of eight percent in his early years, prompting glowing assessments at home and abroad, Singh suffered the mortification of seeing GDP growth slide to below five percent in the past two years as the economy – no longer insulated from the turmoil of Wall Street – withered in the Western financial meltdown. In one fell swoop Singh went from darling of finance and industry to a pariah: Two years after Newsweek called him “the leader other leaders love,” TIME pictured India’s incumbent on its July 2012 cover with the tagline “the underachiever”. Coupled with a spate of corruption scandals, Singh’s premiership and Congress Party suffered. The Congress Party waged an internal struggle within the coalition government in its attempts – too often half-hearted – to help its main support base: the poor. (Contd.. on p. 4)

Manmohan Singh Leaves Legacy Of Disappointments (Contd.. from p. 3) There have been new initiatives like the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Scheme which gives 100 days paid work to landless, unemployed rural poor and the Right to Food Act, promising heavily subsidized rice and wheat to roughly two-thirds of the population below the poverty line. While these policies were successes, they were all formulated by the National Advisory Council, set up by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Singh could hardly be called the architect. His leadership has also been found wanting when it comes to protecting minorities including Dalits, Christians and tribal groups; he admitted as much in his parting statement. Many of the minorities' problems have been directly related to inaction by local governments responsible for law and order. Violence against Christians and Muslims continued unabated as the government has failed to enact the Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill, mainly due to opposition from the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Even so, Singh’s cabinet showed a shameful lack of courage when it came to getting it passed through parliament. His 10 years leading the government have also seen scant progress on tensions in Kashmir. Singh has offered no political solution to heal the deep wounds and emotional cleavage outside of empty rhetoric that Kashmir is an integral part of India. The government has also failed miserably in foreign relations and inter-
nal security. The current diplomatic crisis with the US over the case of envoy Devyani Khobragade and her allegedly underpaid maid has shown a ham-fistedness that has become all to common in New Delhi. Dialogue has been bypassed. Meanwhile, relations with Sri Lanka and Pakistan have been at their lowest for years. The military has been buttressed with new rockets and missiles, aircraft carriers and warplanes, but incursions by Pakistan to the west and China along the northern lines of control have exposed cracks in India's armor. Singh will, finally, have to answer the charge that it was under his watch that religious fundamentalism consolidated further and grew, creating the ground on which Narendra Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, could emerge as a prime ministerial candidate of the BJP despite claims he accommodated riots that left 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus dead in 2002. Facing this main challenger in May, Congress can no longer be sure it retains the trust of the poor, Dalits, tribals and other minorities which have backed the party at the ballot box over so many years. It means bad news not just for Congress but for Indian secularism, the sole security guarantee for religious minorities, and others. This will be Singh’s lasting legacy. Peace Activist Priest Dismissed From Jesuits (Contd.. from p. 2) Jesuit educational institutions with American military recruiting programs such as the ROTC. The dismissal also raises the specter of Pope Francis, the first head of the Catholic church to belong to the Jesuit order, having to confirm the dismissal of one of the order's members. Dear, a longtime NCR columnist, writes about the dismissal in his weekly column, posted Tuesday. He writes that he is leaving "with a heavy heart ... because the Society of Jesus in the U.S. has changed so much since I entered in 1982 and because my Jesuit superiors have tried so hard over the decades to stop my work for peace." Dear also made available to NCR copies of letters from both the Jesuit headquarters in Rome and the Vatican congregation responsible for matters concerning religious life, notifying him of his dismissal. The specific charge against Dear listed in the documents is his refusal to live in a Jesuit community in Baltimore. The decree from the Jesuits, signed by the order's international superior general, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, and dated June 19, says Dear has been "obstinately disobedient to the lawful order of Superiors in a grave matter." Dear, Nicolás states, "was duly informed ... that his failure to obey the command that he return to the specified house of the Order by a specified date would be cause for his dismissal from the Society of Jesus." Nicolás says the matter came to the attention of the Jesuit officials in Rome following a request for action from the Maryland province of the order, one of seven provinces the order maintains in the U.S. and the one in which Dear became a Jesuit. Nicolás says he and five other members of the Jesuits' international council then held a vote on whether to dismiss Dear, which resulted in a unanimous vote for dismissal. Kochi College Girl Self Publishes Book Of Poems In Kindle KOCHI – A college girl in Kerala published her first book of English poems in the leading digital book publisher Amazon.com. She contacted the publisher, made her own cover design, page lay out, converted it into HTML format, priced and published the Kindle reader version, 27 December. “I published the book on Amazon by myself, by following the instructions given on their (Kindle Direct Publishing) website,” Sheryl says explaining the publishing process. Sharing further details she says, “I formatted my book, according to their [Amazon.com] instructions, and I created a cover using Amazon’s software. Since this book has not been given to any publisher for publishing, I own the rights to publish the book, and I had to fill a Tax Exemption form (as I am not a U.S. citizen). Dubai. Currently a student of BSc Chemistry at St. Teresa’s College Ernakulum, Sheryl spent some months studying chemistry in the University of Sheffield, UK. “Before I began writing, I decided to target adults, but as I wrote and discovered what my writing style was like, I decided to aim for and audience of older children and young adults,” confesses Sheryl who loves reading novels, listening to music and watching movies. Her poem titles run on a wide range of topics from Egypt, The Candy Shop, Creative Madness, The Accident, Mosquito Menace, Firefly, etc. “My college peers and my parents liked my poems a lot, and congratulated me for publishing the book,” Sheryl says with a tinge of pride. “I felt like a child again,” says Sheryl’s friend who read a few of her poems. Why Pope Francis And Arvind Kejrival Are The Game Changers Of 2013
I
t takes a lot of energy to moan, whine and complain about how awful things are in our towns, cities, states and country, and how bad politics and distorted economics are not only encroaching on our human/ religious rights, our financial well being, but also in short, ruining our country. It is energy we are often willing to expend without a thought, as it is very easy to do. All of us in this country have to figure out how to turn this situation into something positive, if we want our energies to be channeled, to bring in the required change we desire. Pope Francis and Arvind Kejrival have thought us during 2013, that things can be changed for the positive, if we are ready to look at things that trouble our conscience and do something positive about it. If you are tempted to complain when things do not go your way, just get yourself moving instead and be the change you want to see to take place around you. We all need to work harder,
smarter, different and just try to change things as they are for decades. You will be surprised to find that what you need to do, is simple and well within your control. It is energy well spent! If we do believe that Congress has allowed this country to become one of the most corrupt in the world, and the alternative is a communal party, which has been already curtailing our religious independence in the states where they rule, we as Christians need to act promptly to support a party such as AAP, which has taken on both these two large political parties. It's spectacular performance in the Delhi State Assembly elections, has already shaken up the political parties around the country and change for the good has started to take place. There is a silent revolution that is taking shape around the country these days. What is urgently required all around the country, is for people to become 'Signed In' members of AAP and then get many of their
friends do the same. This is a party that has a policy of inner party democracy and the party members will be asked to vote to choose their own candidate to stand for elections and will not be imposed from above, by the party high command. Both Pope Francis and Arvind Kejrival are saying the same things; that crony capitalism and disparity of wealth between the rich and the poor, is eating into wellness of nations. Uncontrolled corruption is also corroding the very soul of our Country. As 2014 has begun, we are lucky to have two dedicated personalities to lead and guide us. Time will tell if we are just complainers or doers like they are.

A Miracle Machine The Human Body is a miracle machine with inbuilt healing power. It's possible for your body to survive without some internal organs. Even if you lose your stomach, your spleen, 75% of your liver, 80% of your intestines, one kidney, one lung, and virtually every organ from your pelvic area, you would live. Saliva keeps you alive. Without saliva you cannot taste or digest anything. By the age of 60, most people lose about half their taste buds. But, if you rub your tongue with sour lime and salt before eating, you can generate lots of saliva even in old age. The largest cell in the human body is the female egg and the smallest is the male sperm. The strongest muscle in the human body is the heart (tongue being the second strongest) and the hardest bone is the jawbone. The acid in your stomach can dissolve razor blades. So, how can ecoli and other germs survive in it? So, when you get acidity, it means your stomach lining which normally replaces itself every three days, has corroded so much that you need to fast and take curds to build it anew. And this can be done within a week's time. The human lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) of airways and 300 to 500 million hollow cavities, having a total surface area of about 70 square meters. Likewise, if all of the capillaries that surround the lung cavities were unwound and laid end to end, they would extend for about 992 kilometers. Also, your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart. Sneezes regularly exceed 100 mph, while coughs clock in at about 60 mph. Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a gallon of water to a boil. Your body has enough iron in it to make nails grow. The life span of a human hair is 3 to 7 years on an average. Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair. But you must lose over 50% of your scalp hair before it becomes apparent to anyone. The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as an encyclopedia. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream, and is itself made up of 80% water. When the water in the brain dries up, the brain shrinks and Alzheimer's sets in. Though the brain interprets pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain itself cannot feel pain.
Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your nose and ears never stop growing. By 60 years of age, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore. The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb, even while you are sleeping. In fact, the brain is much more active at night than during the day. With the World Gold Council (WGC) aggressively marketing social and religious functions as gold buying events, the demand has shot up in the recent years to record levels. Research shows that over 16,000 tonnes of gold is there in Indian households predominantly in the form of jewellery. The value of this as per market price is a whooping Rs. 27.2 lakh crore. That is close to twice the foreign exchange reserves held by the RBI.

e knows nothing and thinks he knows everything that points clearly to a political career” proclaimed Geogre Bernard Shaw once; perhaps too annoyed with the botched up politics of his time. Contemporary politics is and the public’s anger, hatred and aversion towards politicians are still the same, at least in India. But when within the dirt of politics (and in a business where ‘hypocrisy and dishonesty’ rules) rises an exception, then the public support and respect one gets becomes immense. Intellectuals predict that the recent changes in the Indian political arena, with the rise of new parties, enthusiastic youths with a zeal to do something for the nation, is going to change the face of Indian politics in coming years. Many of the ‘gen-next’ leaders are not only competent but also do ‘politics’ differently. Their efforts to decrease the gaps between the people and leaders and their desire to ‘de-eliticise’ themselves are remarkable. One such young leader is the Kendrapada (Odisha) BJD MP from Lok Sabha, the suave Jay Panda. Baijayant “Jay” Panda has become one of the well known faces of Indian politics which stands for ‘good and clean’ governance. He started his political career with his entry into Rajya Sabha in the year 2000 and went on to be elected directly by the people becoming a Lok Sabha MP. The people of his constituency have constantly shown their affection towards their MP for the sole reason that he combines efficiency with accessibility and transparency. What seems to be pertinent is to discuss his achievements and the reason why he has been successful in striking a chord with the masses. A good leader needs to look beyond the larger politics and get involved in a lot of other activities in collaboration with the people of their constituency. Panda has been involved in many developmental issues within the constituency and understands the local needs of his people. Instead of

blindly following the policies dictated by the ‘policy planners’, its pertinent to the heterogonous needs of a local community. Panda has been playing a key role in the development of the people of Kendrapada. The place has always been victimized by intense floods and natural calamities. Unlike other leaders who love to make an ‘aerial tour’, Panda not only personally organised the relief operations but also personally visited the inaccessible areas to distribute relief and listen to people’s grievances. Even the worst hit areas were covered by boats. He also took care of the post flood medical facilities in the district by organizing free medical camps. As far as health facilities are concerned, it has improved substantially in Kendrapada along with efficient PHCs, he has made a lot of efforts to make functional Mobile Health Units in his constituency. Panda has started some unique way of communicating with the people and addressing their problems with the least delays. The schemes like ‘Sukha Dukhara Sathi’, crisis help, post card relief has made the people feel that their MP is a ‘next door guy’ who is just a ‘call away’. The former refers to making people think that he is their friend, both during happy and sad times. Through this concept, he tries to reach people from different social backgrounds and shows his support. The

Miraculous Healing in Jesus Stuns Israelis When Therese Daoud arrived at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital with a huge cancerous tumor, doctors said her only chance of survival would be to amputate the leg. What happened during the following months has left the medical staff and the nation speechless. “If someone had told me the story of what happened to Therese, I would have said they are crazy and sent them to a mental hospital,” said Professor Yaakov Bickels, head of the Orthopedic- Oncology Department at the hospital. “But I was there. I saw it with my own eyes.” What the professor saw he described as a malignant tumor “the size of an orange.” The biopsy showed a sarcoma. “This is one of the most aggressive and terrifying of all cancerous tumors,” Bickels explained. “With a tumor developed to this degree, the only treatment we could offer Therese was to amputate her leg.” “I was in shock when the doctors told me,” said Therese, a junior high school science teacher. “I thought he was talking about someone else. But I had no choice. I began to prepare myself for life with one leg.” Therese sent lab tests and xrays to the USA to double check, but they came back with the same prognosis. The leg must be amputated to save her life. On the day of surgery, after waiting in the hospital for three days, Therese was informed that because of “technical difficulties” the operation must be rescheduled. When she went back for the rescheduled surgery, just as she was about to be wheeled into the operating theater, Therese was told again, “the amputation must be postponed.” This time the surgical units were unavailable due to a number of emergency cases. By the time Therese got another date for surgery, her mother had become very sick, and Therese decided to herself postpone the operation in order to take care of her mother. For most of us, postponing a life sav-

ing surgery would have been overwhelming. Not for Therese. “Three times the surgery was delayed,” she said. “This was a clear sign to me from heaven that I should not have the surgery.” Israeli TV showed images of Therese praying in a church in the north of the country. “When she told me that she had decided not to have the leg amputated, it was clear to me. She would soon die,” contemplated Prof. Bickels. “I was sorry about her decision.” Three months later, a huge smile on her face, Therese walked unaided into Bickels’ office. “What happened to you?” he asked. “I prayed,” she responded. Stunned, Bickels immediately sent Therese for an MRI, but the results were undeniable. The killer growth had receded dramatically. “This just does not happen,” stammered the professor. “A growth of this kind cannot not recede like this.”
Doctors and nurses could not believe the results, so they sent for another biopsy. But to no avail. There was no cancer. It had completely left her body. “We kept checking her records over and over,” said an astonished Bickels. “We just could not accept that the cancer had gone without any treatment.” Israeli news stations have been reporting on the miracle and all admit that it is impossible to explain what happened to Therese, other than the power of her faith. Hospital staff and reporters even traveled to Therese’s home to look for some other explanation. They tasted the food she eats and checked the water she drinks, but there was no physical explanation. They left contemplating one undeniable, unavoidable and very uncomfortable option – that prayer in Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel, still heals today.

Results showed that the higher the levels of vitamin D in the mother, the higher the grip strength of the child.

irst impressions are always im portant, and never more so than on the work-front. The reality is - and will always be - that people make an assumption of you within the first few seconds you meet. This can include everything from the way you dress, to how you speak and your general attitude. At work, the first impression can not only impact short-term perceptions of you but your long-term reputation and career success. How can you be sure to make a good impression from the very first day? 1. Always maintain a positive attitude. While this may sound simple, onthe-job pressures and stress will sometimes take over your general mood. The impact of a positive attitude is great. Everyone who has the courage to pursue a dream is by definition a competitor. His role has been important in the campaign against tobacco. In his bill, he seeks to increase the graphic warning on tobacco cover and restraining their promotions and advertisements in public areas. Very recently, he was involved in the cause of the exploitation of Odiya migrant worker in the brick kilns in Andhra. He wrote to the Human Rights Commission and the Andhra CM and visited the place himself to get first hand information. He has been active in social networking sites like facebook and twitter where he regularly updates his day’s activities and photos. His website is impressive as it shows all details about the developmental work he has done in Kendrapada, his associations, interviews, policy opinions, articles, etc. It also has a section to promote tourism in Kendrapada. The website also contains regular updates of various meetings held quarterly in Kendrapada. The site has been very useful for the Kendrapada people to directly know what he is doing and communicate with him. All these efforts Jay Panda has made have proved that a real good leader can change the way development and politics is done. PDDM Centre Of Fine Arts (Diya Kala Kendra) Launched

ister Disciples of the Divine Master (PDDM), a reli gious Congregation for women, founded by Bl. James Alberione, has launched a new apostolic initiative , Divya Kala Kendra (Centre for Sacred Arts), as part of their Liturgical Apostolate on January 5, 2014, the Feast of Epiphany, at Prarthanalaya, Bandra, Mumbai. Aimed at spreading the Good News of Jesus through the medium of dance and music, the Centre situated at “Prarthanalaya”, Bandra, offers Certificate Courses in Music and Dance to those interested, and are above the age of 7. Explaining the purpose of the new initiative Sr Kanikai Mary, the Provincial Superior of the Sister Disciples, said that in the Indian tradition music and dance belongs to the realm of divine worship, and the new centre will train people who can authentically incorporate these forms into the Liturgy, thus making the Liturgy more relevant and meaningful in the Indian context. Moreover, she added, Fr Alberione, our founder, had always reminded us of this saying “worship the Lord in Art and Beauty”, and hence the new Centre is a long-cherished dream come true for the Sisters.
