Pope Francis Plays The Good Shepherd's Role To Perfection

Pope Francis melted hearts when he snuggled up with a baby lamb at a living nativity scene on January 6, 2014, during the holiday of Epiphany. The adorable scene was staged at St. Alfonso Maria de' Liguori parish church, in the outskirts of Rome. In addition to being one of the most adorable pictures that has ever been taken of Pope Francis, the lamb is a powerful Christian symbol that has special significance to his papacy… …Pope Francis has emphasized the importance of a pastoral approach in ministry, and once said that priests should stay close to the vulnerable and be “shepherds living with the smell of the sheep.” This little sheep agrees. The lamb is sometimes seen as a metaphor for Jesus, who is known as the "Lamb of God." The title comes from John 1:29, where John the Baptist sees Jesus and exclaims, "Behold the Lamb of God which taketh away the sin of the world." Other Biblical lamb references include the passage in Isaiah 11:6 which predicts a time when, "The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb..." which is usually misquoted as "When the lion shall lie down with the lamb." The pope also made time for some geese, a bunny and some kids of the human variety during his visit.

Manmohan Singh Leaves Legacy Of Disappointments

ndian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s announce ment in his New Year press conference that he would retire at the end of his second term – whether his United Progressive Alliance win or lose May elections – surprised nobody. Singh sheepishly said that history would be more kind to him than his political opponents and the media, BY JOHN DAYAL which have in recent years delighted in framing India’s 13th prime minister as a man of inaction and underachievement. It is a moot point as to which aspects of his 10-year leadership, and five years as finance minister in the 1990s, Singh is banking on to claim his place in history. The Oxford-educated economist, former United Nations official and economic advisor to previous governments will be best remembered for dismantling economic controls installed by Jawaharlal Nehru after independence in 1947 up until Indira Gandhi’s premiership into the late 1970s. Singh was the man that demolished “License Raj,” the notorious red tape around India’s previously planned economy. Opening the economy to Western and Japanese capital investment – according to some a diktat of the International Monetary Fund – helped to create India’s booming IT and telecoms sectors. But there was no accompanying safety net for the poor and marginalized. After initial annual growth rates of eight percent in his early years, prompting glowing assessments at home and abroad, Singh suffered the mortification of seeing GDP growth slide to below five percent in the past two years as the economy – no longer insulated from the turmoil of Wall Street – withered in the Western financial meltdown. In one fell swoop Singh went from darling of finance and industry to a pariah: Two years after Newsweek called him “the leader other leaders love,” TIME pictured India’s incumbent on its July 2012 cover with the tagline “the underachiever”. Coupled with a spate of corruption scandals, Singh’s premiership and Congress Party suffered. The Congress Party waged an internal struggle within the coalition government in its attempts – too often half-hearted – to help its main support base: the poor. (Contd.. on p. 4)

Manmohan Singh Leaves Legacy Of Disappointments (Contd.. from p. 3) There have been new initiatives like the Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Scheme which gives 100 days paid work to landless, unemployed rural poor and the Right to Food Act, promising heavily subsidized rice and wheat to roughly two-thirds of the population below the poverty line. While these policies were successes, they were all formulated by the National Advisory Council, set up by Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Singh could hardly be called the architect. His leadership has also been found wanting when it comes to protecting minorities including Dalits, Christians and tribal groups; he admitted as much in his parting statement. Many of the minorities' problems have been directly related to inaction by local governments responsible for law and order. Violence against Christians and Muslims continued unabated as the government has failed to enact the Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence Bill, mainly due to opposition from the Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Even so, Singh’s cabinet showed a shameful lack of courage when it came to getting it passed through parliament. His 10 years leading the government have also seen scant progress on tensions in Kashmir. Singh has offered no political solution to heal the deep wounds and emotional cleavage outside of empty rhetoric that Kashmir is an integral part of India. The government has also failed miserably in foreign relations and inter-

nal security. The current diplomatic crisis with the US over the case of envoy Devyani Khobragade and her allegedly underpaid maid has shown a ham-fistedness that has become all to common in New Delhi. Dialogue has been bypassed. Meanwhile, relations with Sri Lanka and Pakistan have been at their lowest for years. The military has been buttressed with new rockets and missiles, aircraft carriers and warplanes, but incursions by Pakistan to the west and China along the northern lines of control have exposed cracks in India's armor. Singh will, finally, have to answer the charge that it was under his watch that religious fundamentalism consolidated further and grew, creating the ground on which Narendra Modi, chief minister of Gujarat, could emerge as a prime ministerial candidate of the BJP despite claims he accommodated riots that left 790 Muslims and 254 Hindus dead in 2002. Facing this main challenger in May, Congress can no longer be sure it retains the trust of the poor, Dalits, tribals and other minorities which have backed the party at the ballot box over so many years. It means bad news not just for Congress but for Indian secularism, the sole security guarantee for religious minorities, and others. This will be Singh’s lasting legacy. John Dayal is general secretary of the All India Christian Council and a member of the Indian government’s National Integration Council.

Peace Activist Priest Dismissed From Jesuits (Contd.. from p. 2) Jesuit educational institutions with American military recruiting programs such as the ROTC. The dismissal also raises the specter of Pope Francis, the first head of the Catholic church to belong to the Jesuit order, having to confirm the dismissal of one of the order's members. Dear, a longtime NCR columnist, writes about the dismissal in his weekly column, posted Tuesday. He writes that he is leaving "with a heavy heart ... because the Society of Jesus in the U.S. has changed so much since I entered in 1982 and because my Jesuit superiors have tried so hard over the decades to stop my work for peace." Dear also made available to NCR copies of letters from both the Jesuit headquarters in Rome and the Vatican congregation responsible for matters concerning religious life, notifying him of his dismissal. The specific charge against Dear listed in the documents is his refusal to live in a Jesuit community in Baltimore. The decree from the Jesuits, signed by the order's international superior general, Fr. Adolfo Nicolás, and dated June 19, says Dear has been "obstinately disobedient to the lawful order of Superiors in a grave matter." Dear, Nicolás states, "was duly informed ... that his failure to obey the command that he return to the specified house of the Order by a specified date would be cause for his dismissal from the Society of Jesus." Nicolás says the matter came to the attention of the Jesuit officials in Rome following a request for action from the Maryland province of the order, one of seven provinces the order maintains in the U.S. and the one in which Dear became a Jesuit. Nicolás says he and five other members of the Jesuits' international council then held a vote on whether to dismiss Dear, which resulted in a unanimous vote for dismissal. Kochi College Girl Self Publishes Book Of Poems In Kindle KOCHI – A college girl in Kerala published her first book of English poems in the leading digital book publisher Amazon.com. She contacted the publisher, made her own cover design, page lay out, converted it into HTML format, priced and published the Kindle reader version, 27 December. “I published the book on Amazon by myself, by following the instructions given on their (Kindle Direct Publishing) website,” Sheryl says explaining the publishing process. Sharing further details she says, “I formatted my book, according to their [Amazon.com] instructions, and I created a cover using Amazon’s software. Since this book has not been given to any publisher for publishing, I own the rights to publish the book, and I had to fill a Tax Exemption form (as I am not a U.S. citizen). Finally, I submitted by book document (after converting it to HTML) and it was published within 24 hours.” “My first book, ‘Sheryl’s Poetic Fantasies’, features 50 poems based on various themes, such as nature, food, travel, school, and philosophy,” says Sheryl Cherian Parakkal from Kochi. “It is written mostly in a lighthearted way, solely to entertain and perhaps even amuse those who read them,” says Sheryl who completed her “O” and “A” levels (class X and XII) in

Her poem titles run on a wide range of topics from Egypt, The Candy Shop, Creative Madness, The Accident, Mosquito Menace, Firefly, etc. “My college peers and my parents liked my poems a lot, and congratulated me for publishing the book,” Sheryl says with a tinge of pride. “I felt like a child again,” says Sheryl’s friend who read a few of her poems. Sheryl buts in “If I have been able to capture the bliss of childhood in my writing, then I am truly happy!” “Use your time productively,” she says quoting author Paulo Coelho as

her advice to fellow college-mates. Coelho says, “there are 24 hours in a day and instead of lounging around in front of the TV, do useful things.” Revealing further the genesis of her passion for poetry Sheryl says, “The poet that inspired me and whose poem encouraged me to write in a simple and humorous manner is Roger McGough, who wrote the poem ‘Vinegar’: Vinegar Sometimes I feel like a priest In a fish and chips queue Quietly thinking As the vinegar runs through How nice it would be To buy supper for two. Why Pope Francis And Arvind Kejrival Are The Game Changers Of 2013

I

t takes a lot of energy to moan, whine and complain about how awful things are in our towns, cities, states and country, and how bad politics and distorted economics are not only encroaching on our human/ religious rights, our financial well being, but also in short, ruining our country. It is energy we are often willing to expend without a thought, as it is very easy to do. All of us in this country have to figure out how to turn this situation into something positive, if we want our energies to be channeled, to bring in the required change we desire. Pope Francis and Arvind Kejrival have thought us during 2013, that things can be changed for the positive, if we are ready to look at things that trouble our conscience and do something positive about it. If you are tempted to complain when things do not go your way, just get yourself moving instead and be the change you want to see to take place around you. We all need to work harder,

smarter, different and just try to change things as they are for decades. You will be surprised to find that what you need to do, is simple and well within your control. It is energy well spent! If we do believe that Congress has allowed this country to become one of the most corrupt in the world, and the alternative is a communal party, which has been already curtailing our religious independence in the states where they rule, we as Christians need to act promptly to support a party such as AAP, which has taken on both these two large political parties. It's spectacular performance in the Delhi State Assembly elections, has already shaken up the political parties around the country and change for the good has started to take place. There is a silent revolution that is taking shape around the country these days. What is urgently required all around the country, is for people to become 'Signed In' members of AAP and then get many of their

friends do the same. This is a party that has a policy of inner party democracy and the party members will be asked to vote to choose their own candidate to stand for elections and will not be imposed from above, by the party high command. This an opportunity for all secular citizens of this country to grab. One just has to go the party website www. Aam Admi Party.Org to register as a member. Both Pope Francis and Arvind Kejrival are saying the same things; that crony capitalism and disparity of wealth between the rich and the poor, is eating into wellness of nations. Uncontrolled corruption is also corroding the very soul of our Country. As 2014 has begun, we are lucky to have two dedicated personalities to lead and guide us. Time will tell if we are just complainers or doers like they are.

Human Body:

A Miracle Machine The Human Body is a miracle machine with inbuilt healing power. It's possible for your body to survive without some internal organs. Even if you lose your stomach, your spleen, 75% of your liver, 80% of your intestines, one kidney, one lung, and virtually every organ from your pelvic area, you would live. Saliva keeps you alive. Without saliva you cannot taste or digest anything. By the age of 60, most people lose about half their taste buds. But, if you rub your tongue with sour lime and salt before eating, you can generate lots of saliva even in old age. The largest cell in the human body is the female egg and the smallest is the male sperm. The strongest muscle in the human body is the heart (tongue being the second strongest) and the hardest bone is the jawbone. The acid in your stomach can dissolve razor blades. So, how can ecoli and other germs survive in it? So, when you get acidity, it means your stomach lining which normally replaces itself every three days, has corroded so much that you need to fast and take curds to build it anew. And this can be done within a week's time. The human lungs contain approximately 2,400 kilometers (1,500 miles) of airways and 300 to 500 million hollow cavities, having a total surface area of about 70 square meters. Likewise, if all of the capillaries that surround the lung cavities were unwound and laid end to end, they would extend for about 992 kilometers. Also, your left lung is smaller than your right lung to make room for your heart. Sneezes regularly exceed 100 mph, while coughs clock in at about 60 mph. Your body gives off enough heat in 30 minutes to bring half a gallon of water to a boil. Your body has enough iron in it to make nails grow. Everyone has a unique smell, except for identical twins, who smell the same. Your teeth start growing 6

months before you are born. This is why one out of every 2,000 newborn infants has a tooth when they are born. A baby's head is one-quarter of its total length, but by the age of 25 will only be one-eighth of its total length. This is because people's heads grow at a much slower rate than the rest of their bodies. Babies are born with 300 bones, but by adulthood the number is reduced to 206. Some of the bones, like skull bones, get fused into each other, bringing down the total number. Human feet have 52 bones and the two feet between them have 500,000 sweat glands. Male nose can remember 50,000 different scents. But women surpass men in that department. The human body is estimated to have 60,000 miles of blood vessels. The pain the women experience during delivery is the severest. By Yoga, rhythmic breathing, or by relaxing, this can be reduced considerably. The life span of a human hair is 3 to 7 years on an average. Every day the average person loses 60-100 strands of hair. But you must lose over 50% of your scalp hair before it becomes apparent to anyone. The human brain cell can hold 5 times as much information as an encyclopedia. Your brain uses 20% of the oxygen that enters your bloodstream, and is itself made up of 80% water. When the water in the brain dries up, the brain shrinks and Alzheimer's sets in. Though the brain interprets pain signals from the rest of the body, the brain itself cannot feel pain.

Your eyes are always the same size from birth but your nose and ears never stop growing. By 60 years of age, 60% of men and 40% of women will snore. The brain operates on the same amount of power as 10-watt light bulb, even while you are sleeping. In fact, the brain is much more active at night than during the day. Nerve impulses to and from the brain travel as fast as 170 miles per hour. Neurons continue to grow throughout human life. Information travels at different speeds within different types of neurons. It is a fact that people who dream more often and more vividly, on an average have a higher Intelligence Quotient. Facial hair grows faster than any other hair on the body. This is true for men as well as women. A human baby acquires fingerprints at the age of three months. About 32 million bacteria call every inch of your skin, home. But don't worry, a majority of these are harmless or even helpful bacteria. Three hundred million cells die in the human body every minute. Like fingerprints, every individual has a unique tongue print that can be used for identification. It takes 17 muscles to smile and 43 to frown. Humans can live longer without food than sleep. Provided there is water, the average human could survive about two months without food depending on their body fat and other (Contd.. on p. 17)

old is among the most loved precious metals in the world. It’s a wonderful ornament to wear as well as a great hedge against inflation and falling markets. Another significant attribute of gold is that it can be liquidated easily around the world.

Identification

- In many countries including India, local law requires that every item of gold jewellery bears a clear stamp indicating its caratage. This identification is often controlled through a hallmarking system. Branded Jewellers usually stamp the jewellery themselves, displaying both their own identifying mark and the caratage or ‘fineness’ of each piece.

For Indians, gold is a symbol of purity, prosperity and opulence. But how well do you know your gold jewellery and what things should you keep in mind while buying gold ornaments? Here’s what you need to know when buying Gold Jewellery.

India (NRIs included) is crazy about gold jewellery. With the World Gold Council (WGC) aggressively marketing social and religious functions as gold buying events, the demand has shot up in the recent years to record levels. Research shows that over 16,000 tonnes of gold is there in Indian households predominantly in the form of jewellery. The value of this as per market price is a whooping Rs. 27.2 lakh crore. That is close to twice the foreign exchange reserves held by the RBI.

Gold as an investment option There are 2 primary reasons why you need to invest in gold. 1. Investing money in gold is worth because it is a hedge against inflation. Over a period of time, the return on gold investment is in line with the rate of inflation. 2. It is worth investing in gold for a one more very valid reason. That is gold is negatively correlated to equity investments. Say for example 2007 onwards, the equity markets started performing poorly whereas the gold has performed well. So having gold as an investment option in your portfolio mix will help you reduce the overall volatility of your portfolio.

Risk Gold does not carry much risk at least in India, as we hardly see deflation in the real sense. Even when the official figures where showing negative inflation (deflation) during the last year, the actual prices of food items were increasing. This was reflected in the gold prices too.

Liquidity Gold scores the highest in terms of liquidity, compared to all other investments. At any time of the day and any day gold can literally be converted to cash. Banks would give you a jewellery loan

Jewellery buying Our age-old and traditional way of investment is jewellery buying where one can buy gold ornaments, bars or coins. However, it has its own disadvantages, total buying cost involves heavy making charges (it can be 10 to 20% of total cost). However, when you try to sell the same piece to same jeweler, he will buy it below market rates and deduct those making charges from the total price of your jewel.

20 January 2014

Adding other metals to the mix also allows metallurgists to change the color of gold. Palladium or nickel can be added to create white gold. Adding copper produces a rose or pink tint, while silver gives gold a greenish cast. When Gold Is Used as a Coating There are many ways to mechanically apply a coating of gold onto a much less expensive metal, reducing the item's cost. The thicker the layer of gold, the less likely it is to wear away easily and expose the metal underneath.

Gold Filled Jewelry Newer gold filled items have markings that indicate how much and what type of gold was used for the layer. A marking that says 1/20 12K G.F. means that the jewelry is at least 1/20th 12K gold by weight.

Gold Plated Jewelry The gold layer in gold plated jewelry is typically thinner than the gold in gold filled jewelry, so it usually wears away more quickly. Plating is done in different ways. You might see terms such as gold washed used to describe a very thin layer of gold--one that won't be very durable.

So What Should You Buy? Solid gold is durable, so it is a better choice for jewelry you'll wear regularly. If you have allergies to nickel or other metals, choose items that have high gold content, such as 18K or 22K gold jewelry. Gold filled or plated jewelry is suitable for jewelry that you wear occasionally. Everyday use would eventually diminish the gold layer, exposing the metal below, which might stain your skin or cause an allergic reaction.

Facts About GOLD Very few chemicals can attack gold, so that’s why it keeps it shine even when buried for 1000’s of years. Contemporary politics is and the public’s anger, hatred and aversion towards politicians are still the same, at least in India. But when within the dirt of politics (and in a business where ‘hypocrisy and dishonesty’ rules) rises an exception, then the public support and respect one gets becomes immense. Intellectuals predict that the recent changes in the Indian political arena, with the rise of new parties, enthusiastic youths with a zeal to do something for the nation, is going to change the face of Indian politics in coming years. Many of the ‘gen-next’ leaders are not only competent but also do ‘politics’ differently. Their efforts to decrease the gaps between the people and leaders and their desire to ‘de-eliticise’ themselves are remarkable. One such young leader is the Kendrapada (Odisha) BJD MP from Lok Sabha, the suave Jay Panda. Baijayant “Jay” Panda has become one of the well known faces of Indian politics which stands for ‘good and clean’ governance. He started his political career with his entry into Rajya Sabha in the year 2000 and went on to be elected directly by the people becoming a Lok Sabha MP. The people of his constituency have constantly shown their affection towards their MP for the sole reason that he combines efficiency with accessibility and transparency. What seems to be pertinent is to discuss his achievements and the reason why he has been successful in striking a chord with the masses. A good leader needs to look beyond the larger politics and get involved in a lot of other activities in collaboration with the people of their constituency. Panda has been involved in many developmental issues within the constituency and understands the local needs of his people. Instead of

10

blindly following the policies dictated by the ‘policy planners’, its pertinent to the heterogonous needs of a local community. Panda has been playing a key role in the development of the people of Kendrapada. The place has always been victimized by intense floods and natural calamities. Unlike other leaders who love to make an ‘aerial tour’, Panda not only personally organised the relief operations but also personally visited the inaccessible areas to distribute relief and listen to people’s grievances. Even the worst hit areas were covered by boats. He also took care of the post flood medical facilities in the district by organizing free medical camps. As far as health facilities are concerned, it has improved substantially in Kendrapada along with efficient PHCs, he has made a lot of efforts to make functional Mobile Health Units in his constituency. Panda has started some unique way of communicating with the people and addressing their problems with the least delays. The schemes like ‘Sukha Dukhara Sathi’, crisis help, post card relief has made the people feel that their MP is a ‘next door guy’ who is just a ‘call away’. The former refers to making people think that he is their friend, both during happy and sad times. Through this concept, he tries to reach people from different social backgrounds and shows his support. The

crisis help has actually helped people who are caught in emergency situations related to accidents, health, fires, etc. fast help is provided from Jay’s office to victims of such untoward incidents. Post card system has facilitated people to just send their grievances by post personally to Jay and get it solved soon! When the voice of the masses is ignored by the officials (which happen often) a ‘post card’ acts as a miracle for the denizens of Kendrapada. All these ‘unique’ ways devised by him, bring him closer to the people. Both in terms of socio economic development and infrastructure development, efforts has been made to bring a change in people’s lives. For them, he is no longer the inaccessible man seen in posters (Contd.. on p. 19)

Miraculous Healing in Jesus Stuns Israelis When Therese Daoud arrived at Tel Aviv’s Ichilov Hospital with a huge cancerous tumor, doctors said her only chance of survival would be to amputate the leg. What happened during the following months has left the medical staff and the nation speechless. “If someone had told me the story of what happened to Therese, I would have said they are crazy and sent them to a mental hospital,” said Professor Yaakov Bickels, head of the Orthopedic- Oncology Department at the hospital. “But I was there. I saw it with my own eyes.” What the professor saw he described as a malignant tumor “the size of an orange.” The biopsy showed a sarcoma. “This is one of the most aggressive and terrifying of all cancerous tumors,” Bickels explained. “With a tumor developed to this degree, the only treatment we could offer Therese was to amputate her leg.” “I was in shock when the doctors told me,” said Therese, a junior high school science teacher. “I thought he was talking about someone else. But I had no choice. I began to prepare myself for life with one leg.” Therese sent lab tests and xrays to the USA to double check, but they came back with the same prognosis. The leg must be amputated to save her life. On the day of surgery, after waiting in the hospital for three days, Therese was informed that because of “technical difficulties” the operation must be rescheduled. When she went back for the rescheduled surgery, just as she was about to be wheeled into the operating theater, Therese was told again, “the amputation must be postponed.” This time the surgical units were unavailable due to a number of emergency cases. By the time Therese got another date for surgery, her mother had become very sick, and Therese decided to herself postpone the operation in order to take care of her mother. For most of us, postponing a life sav-

20 January 2014

ing surgery would have been overwhelming. Not for Therese. “Three times the surgery was delayed,” she said. “This was a clear sign to me from heaven that I should not have the surgery.” Israeli TV showed images of Therese praying in a church in the north of the country. “When she told me that she had decided not to have the leg amputated, it was clear to me. She would soon die,” contemplated Prof. Bickels. “I was sorry about her decision.” Three months later, a huge smile on her face, Therese walked unaided into Bickels’ office. “What happened to you?” he asked. “I prayed,” she responded. Stunned, Bickels immediately sent Therese for an MRI, but the results were undeniable. The killer growth had receded dramatically. “This just does not happen,” stammered the professor. “A growth of this kind cannot not recede like this.”

Doctors and nurses could not believe the results, so they sent for another biopsy. But to no avail. There was no cancer. It had completely left her body. “We kept checking her records over and over,” said an astonished Bickels. “We just could not accept that the cancer had gone without any treatment.” Israeli news stations have been reporting on the miracle and all admit that it is impossible to explain what happened to Therese, other than the power of her faith. Hospital staff and reporters even traveled to Therese’s home to look for some other explanation. They tasted the food she eats and checked the water she drinks, but there was no physical explanation. They left contemplating one undeniable, unavoidable and very uncomfortable option – that prayer in Yeshua, the Messiah of Israel, still heals today.

The Eucharist: Its Passion, Power, Richness And Beauty by Leon Bent

T

he Year of the Eucharist 2014 for the Archdiocese of Bombay is meant to counter the contemporary world, which undertakes the building of Paradise by its own might, by driving God from His Paradise. In the tempestuous ocean of time and toil, the Eucharist is an island of stillness, a fountain of grace, a spring of Living Waters, a nostalgic replica of the Last Supper, a memorial to the Paschal Mystery, a promise of the Heavenly Feast to come, and a wellspring of sanctification. One feels, in the rush of the passing, the serenity of timelessness. Passion and Power Jesus’ ‘sacrificial ritual’ opens the floodgates to abundant life, and shows us the way to bear fruit that lasts forever! For ours is a Church of the Eucharist – the ambrosial Body and Blood of the Redeemer! We can re-invent the “Lord’s Supper” by living a radical lifestyle, so that, the Saviour is born in us, not once, but continually, filling our lives with liquid gold: His eternal Love! The decision is left to us! A Conscious Choice The young boy mentioned in the Gospels made this choice, as he confidently offered “everything” he had to Jesus: Merely five loaves and two fish though it was! An act of fierce faith on the supposedly teenager’s part! The Son of God then miraculously fed five thousand men, besides women and children. “Lord, I too will not wait. I will live the present moment filled to the brim with love! Yes, Lord, I will become a silent offering, without boundaries!” It’s Core: Mystery The heart of the Mystical Supper is the ‘Words of Institution’: He “took”

20 January 2014

the offering and “prayed” (blessed), then “broke” (multiplied) the little lad’s food a thousand times over, and “gave” it to the large crowd. In the Paschal Banquet: He takes our offerings (especially our frail, flawed selves, other petitions, etc.), blesses and breaks (mingles them with his very own glorified Body and Blood) them, and gives them back to us, holistically healed and sanctified. “Take and eat,

this is my Body – Take and drink, this is my Blood!” Conversion Experience For this hidden richness to burst forth, the adorable presence of Christ in the Bread and Wine cannot be received mechanically, out of habit, but always in a spirit of poverty, repentance and reparation; love, joy and peace; with the soul of a simple child. When we “Do this in memory of me,” as Jesus urged and mandated, our hearts are on fire with his love! If we live like this, eucharistically, revolutionarily, we are on a faith-journey of wordless communion! Only love can bring about this extraordinary and profound mystery! We accept this “remembrance” in faith, as part of God’s great love for us. However, it is worth knowing that, spirituality is not restricted to certain “holy” places and “sacred” times. Jesus is Lord of history! The Clincher! Lord, I want to be the little, innocent, meek and humble boy, who offered you ‘everything’ he had! I hold nothing back, not even my life! I want nothing except you, your splendour, and timeless bliss: The ‘pledge of eternal glory’ (Jn. 6:35, 47- 58). My one and only desire is to partake of the Marriage Feast of the Lamb of God - The Eternal Banquet of Love!

Google 'most talked about' in 2013

G You are constantly invaded with thoughts of spending the rest of your life with him. You think of him most times of the day. This is a clear indication. You have come to terms with his flaws: Most marriages fall apart because there is a lack of acceptance of each other’s imperfections. When both of you are fully aware of each other’s flaws and are completely willing to live with each other despite the flaws, you are ready to get married. You can communicate well with him: In marriage, being able to communicate what you need and want is important. You have begun using ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’ with him: When you have begun to use a lot of ‘we’, ‘us’ and ‘our’ when talking with/of him, you are trying to include him in most decisions of your life. If you aren’t ready for marriage with him, you are not likely to use them as often as you do it as of late. You imagine having kids with him: Are you beginning to think about kids that you will have with him and what a beautiful family life you can lead with this man? Simple thoughts about how many kids you want to have and how they should look like hint the fact that you are ready for marriage.

Vitamin D in Pregnancy Results in Stronger Babies

Researchers have suggested that babies are likely to have stronger muscles if their mothers had a higher level of vitamin D in their body while they are pregnant. In the research vitamin D levels were measured in 678 mothers in the later stages of pregnancy. When the children were four years old, grip strength and muscle mass were measured. Results showed that the higher the levels of vitamin D in the mother, the higher the grip strength of the child.

Make A Good First Impression At Work

F

irst impressions are always im portant, and never more so than on the work-front. The reality is - and will always be - that people make an assumption of you within the first few seconds you meet. This can include everything from the way you dress, to how you speak and your general attitude. At work, the first impression can not only impact short-term perceptions of you but your long-term reputation and career success. How can you be sure to make a good impression from the very first day? 1. Always maintain a positive attitude. While this may sound simple, onthe-job pressures and stress will sometimes take over your general mood. The impact of a positive attitude is great. You not only combat daily work issues in a more balanced way, but show your manager that you are capable of dealing with difficult situations calmly. 2. Listen carefully. We all want to be heard, but in many instances listening to what others have to say is more important. Be attentive. Make eye contact. Show that you appreciate the opinions of others and can work as part of a team. 3. Watch your manners. This is something your mother probably told you, and she was right. On the job etiquette requires that you monitor your behavior at all times. Do not tell off-color jokes. Do not get into petty arguments. Do not attract undue attention to yourself that is not work-centric. All of these can impact the impression you project. 4. Be mindful of formal and informal office policies. As a newcomer, you will be charged with understanding the general dynamic of your new job. This includes both formal and informal policies. Become familiar with general office procedures. This can include the daily routine of the office. As a newcomer, it is your responsibility to ob-

20 January 2014

serve and adapt to your new work environment as much as possible. 5. Get to know your co-workers. Introduce yourself to your team and others. Remember their names. While work is not a social gathering, getting to know the people around you is a good way to make an impression. You should also be mindful about the associations you make. Being affiliated with the office gossip or troublemaker will not reflect well on you. 6. Watch what you wear. What you wear to work says a lot about you. While you should always maintain your own personal style, there are limits. Follow the dress code as much as possible. If it is a casual office environment, wearing a suit is not necessary. But dressing too casually can work against you too. The general rule is to not dress for the job you have, but the one you want. 7. Watch what you say. People not only make assumptions about you based on what you wear, but also what you say. The words you choose are all part of the impression you make. If you use slang or off-color phrases, you are negatively impacting the impression your co-workers have of you. While being completely eloquent at all times is not expected, be sure to use your words carefully. You will be judged. While the tips above are all helpful and useful in building the impression you make at work, they serves as a guide to building the everlasting impression you make to those around you in general.

(Contd.. from p. 7) factors. Sleep deprived people, however, start experiencing radical personality and psychological changes after only a few sleepless days. The longest recorded time anyone has ever gone without sleep is 11 days, at the end of which the experimenter was awake, but stumbled over words, hallucinated and frequently forgot what he was doing. Every human spent about half an hour after being conceived, as a single cell. Shortly afterward, the cells begin rapidly dividing and begin forming the components of a tiny embryo. Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than lefthanded people do. However, it is a fact that the human body comes with a guarantee card of 100 years of faultfree service from God, the finest manufacturer. Hence, the so-called scientific medicine saying we have increased your life-span is the biggest lie, like saying vaccines protect you from diseases, when they are multiplying diseases. To take care of this most intricate machine, remember some simple truths. Body heals itself. So do not tinker with it. 90% surgery is unnecessary. The health of the body depends simply on input and output ratio: The food that you eat and expel, the water you drink and discharge, the air that you inhale and exhale, the thoughts you ingest and reject. Remember that old saying: mens sana in corpore sano? It means healthy mind in healthy body. Period.

How To Help Build Your Childs Self Esteem

I

catch at how wonderful they are. There are also the other occasions when they do something second nature to us, or something you’ve asked them to do a thousand times. Instead of the ‘It’s about time’ eye roll, how about calling them on the good stuff? Tell her you noticed she started squeezing the toothpaste from the end—good job! Or that he put the toilet seat back down—nice job! With this, they may find other ways to get those verbal pats on the back more often.

n these days of over whelming social media ideals and kids growing up at the speed of light, knowing how to help build your child's self esteem can be a challenge. Even though it seems ‘kids these days’ are so different from when we were growing up, there are some parts of childhood that are still the same as ever.

There Is No Such Things as Little Stuff Little discoveries today will turn into bigger accomplishments later on in life. When they realize that kudos for a job well done feel better than waking up to a snow day, they will want to continue to do better and better!

ter wings, what’s the difference if he’s the last person in swim class to take the plunge? In the end, the only person either of you will probably remember in that class is him.

Affection Affection Affection Even When They Don’t Make a Why not call your child into the kitchen Big Deal, You Should one day? When he gets there, take his It seems the rule of thumb these days is for children to try to be unimpressed… with everything. This is just for show. Deep down, kids love to know they are noticed and appreciated. So when you get the note that your child has reached the final of the school spelling bee, or that she received a B in the class she struggled to get a C in last semester, throw a parade! When he cleans his room without being asked, greet your industrious little one with two open arms, and a big “I’m so proud of you!”

Not Better than, but The Best You Can Be Everything these days seems to be a competition. Why not try to remind your child the only person she has to consider when trying to do better than last time is herself? If they outdo their 3point shooting average on the court, fantastic! Who cares if it’s not the highest score in gym class? The momentum is moving in the right direction. When your 9-year-old takes off his wa-

18

beautiful head in your hands and plant a big mom kiss right on the top of it. Then turn him around and say “Resume,” sending him back to whatever he was just doing. His first response will be to wonder what the catch is. Eventually, his reaction will be to smile inside (if not out) when he thinks of his silly, loving mom. There are few things that can make a child feel more worthwhile than a hug for no reason. It shows you are thinking of your children when they don’t even know it, and that they will be called out not only when the vase gets broken or the dog needs feeding, but also just when you can’t help but tell them they are loved just for being themselves.

Point Out The Good Stuff Kids are selfish creatures, as it should be. Their main job is to figure out who they are, and how they fit in this world. Along this path, they will do things that seem right. While you may disagree sometimes, other times, your heart will

Spend Time with Them Even When You Don’t ‘need to’ Instead of trying to get the errands done as quickly as possible with a backseat filled with chatterboxes, how about finding ways to lose track of time and get them done with as much fun as possible? The dishes, lawn mowing, and bills can wait. You’ll have them for the rest of your life. These times with your children will go by in a blink and a half. Make them count even if you can’t make them last. Why not ask them a question which might spur a conversation? It could take a few tries, but once you hit on a subject that catches their attention (do you think fish talk, what would you change your name to if it could be anything, where would you like to visit more than any other place in the world), you are on the way to a lifetime of talks with your kidlets.

Ask Their Opinion And Advice The next time you have a little decision to make—what to make for dinner, what to give Aunt Judy for her birthday, where to put the Christmas tree—ask your protégée. Chances are, they will have a thought and some interesting reasoning to back it up. While you may not follow their line of logic, you might see things from a different angle, and that’s never bad. And they will feel like they have a voice that is heard, and respected just for being theirs.

Inspiration!

SUCCESS is a journey,

not a destination O O O

O O O O O O O O

Success is not a destination. It is not a place to go. Being successful today does not imply success tomorrow. Success is overcoming obstacles. Success is an action. To be successful is a continuous process of action. Success is working towards your goals and dreams. Success is thus a journey not a destination. Winning today is temporary. It may be an argument, a sporting event, or anything else that may be important to you at that moment. Getting a title today is temporary. Getting a promotion today is temporary. Success is a journey to accomplish your goals, plans and dreams. It’s willingness in pursuit of victory irrespective of the obstacles. It’s to go after your goals and pursue your dreams, make the sacrifices needed to achieve your goals and dreams. It‘s an action packed journey of living your passion and in the process you achieve your dreams. Pursuing to leave a legacy of empowering other people to achieve the same as you did.

This journey is best described by: Dan Brodsky Chenfeld “Pursuing a dream often involves improving at an activity you love. To be better than you are, the best you can be, or even the best there is. Everyone who has the courage to pursue a dream is by definition a competitor. You’re always competing against yourself, sometimes against other people, sometimes as part of a team, at other times solo. Too often people let the actual “victory” they are after define them as winners. Using that as the one and only measure of success is very inaccurate. The final score or the best time may determine who won a contest, but in no way does that alone define who is a winner and who is not in the bigger picture.

Titles are temporary. Becoming a winner is an ongoing process that involves making the decision to pursue your dream, waking up every day to face the obstacles that pursuit will inevitably present, keeping your eyes on your goal, and not backing off for anything. It will almost certainly require you to step out of your comfort zone, work hard, experience days and weeks of pain, frustration, and personal sacrifice while enjoying mere moments of incredible joy, pride, and fulfillment. All this will happen long before the day of the “competition.” And unlike a title, money, or fame, what you gain in the process cannot be taken away from you. It is yours forever and yours to use towards any other goals you may have in life.” – Dan Brodsky Chenfeld

(Contd.. from p. 10) but a person like them to whom they can send posts! Panda has been successful not just as a local leader but equally admired as an MP in the Parliament. He has introduced a lot of private member’s Bills that deals with important issues like increasing the power of the Auditor and Comptroller General, removing the tainted leaders and putting a check on criminals in politics, etc. He has been associated with many committees and campaigns which aim at public welfare. His role has been important in the campaign against tobacco. In his bill, he seeks to increase the graphic warning on tobacco cover and restraining their promotions and advertisements in public areas. Very recently, he was involved in the cause of the exploitation of Odiya migrant worker in the brick kilns in Andhra. He wrote to the Human Rights Commission and the Andhra CM and visited the place himself to get first hand information. He has been active in social networking sites like facebook and twitter where he regularly updates his day’s activities and photos. His website is impressive as it shows all details about the developmental work he has done in Kendrapada, his associations, interviews, policy opinions, articles, etc. It also has a section to promote tourism in Kendrapada. The website also contains regular updates of various meetings held quarterly in Kendrapada. The site has been very useful for the Kendrapada people to directly know what he is doing and communicate with him. All these efforts Jay Panda has made have proved that a real good leader can change the way development and politics is done. Politicians must learn that along with honesty, it is skills, competency, desire to achieve something and most importantly, making themselves a part of the lives of the masses, is the only way to gain respect. Theodore Roosevelt rightly said that ‘the most successful politician is he who says what the people are thinking most often in the loudest voice’.

PDDM Centre Of Fine Arts (Diya Kala Kendra) Launched

S

ister Disciples of the Divine Master (PDDM), a reli gious Congregation for women, founded by Bl. James Alberione, has launched a new apostolic initiative , Divya Kala Kendra (Centre for Sacred Arts), as part of their Liturgical Apostolate on January 5, 2014, the Feast of Epiphany, at Prarthanalaya, Bandra, Mumbai. Aimed at spreading the Good News of Jesus through the medium of dance and music, the Centre situated at “Prarthanalaya”, Bandra, offers Certificate Courses in Music and Dance to those interested, and are above the age of 7. Explaining the purpose of the new initiative Sr Kanikai Mary, the Provincial Superior of the Sister Disciples, said that in the Indian tradition music and dance belongs to the realm of divine worship, and the new centre will train people who can authentically incorporate these forms into the Liturgy, thus making the Liturgy more relevant and meaningful in the Indian context. Moreover, she added, Fr Alberione, our founder, had always reminded us of this saying “worship the Lord in Art and Beauty”, and hence the new Centre is a long-cherished dream come true for the Sisters. Sisters Amita Mascarenhas and Sushma Dungdung of the Sister Disciples who are directing the Courses at Divya

Kala Kendra are professionally trained in their respective fields for many years, and having completed their studies they have been training young people in different institutions in the city over the past few years. The Sister Disciples are part of the Pauline Family that is celebrating the Centenary of its foundation, this year, and Divya Kala Kendra is their special contribution to the Indian Church and to the Paulines around the world, during the Centenary year. More information about the Centre, and about specific Courses offered, can be obtained on e-mail: amitapddm@hotmail.co.uk/ sushmapd.28@gmail.com or by telephone: 022-26422437. —Fr Alfonso Elengikal,SSP
