Challenges Facing Print Media In India Today! (A PERSPECTIVE)

Dear Friends, It is good to be here at this National Convention of the Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA). I want to thank Fr. Alfonso Elengikal, the President of the ICPA, Mr. Jose Vincent, the Secretary of ICPA and all others concerned for inviting me to share with you some perspectives on the challenges facing the print media today. I will of course focus on the theme of this Convention, “PROPHETIC CHALLENGES BEFORE MEDIA TODAY”. At the outset, I would like to emphasize two points: i. that the printed word plays a significant and defining role in the Indian sub-continent today ii. that being engaged in the print media is no longer an option for us, but a mandate CHALLENGES Having said this let me focus on some of the challenges that the print media faces in the changing context of India today. (In order to ensure an economy of words, I will in the remainder of this sharing use the very general term ‘media’ even though this Convention focuses on Catholics engaged in the print-media) What then are some of the major challenges which the media in India faces today? · The Corporatisation Of The Media If there is one single major concern which the media in India faces today, it is the way it has been corporatised. A systematic study of all the big newspapers in the country

Fr. Cedric Prakash sj, delivering the talk on 'Challenges Facing Print Media In India Today!' will easily reveal that they belong to one or the other of the big corporate houses. Corporations (be they national or multi-nationals), we are all aware, have their own agenda. They are determined by the ideology of that particular corporation, by profit-making and in most instances, they would not want to disturb the ‘status quo’ or to rock the boat. When media is taken over by such houses, the endgame is blatantly clear: our minds, our thought-processes are determined in a particular way. · The Commercialisation Of The Media In our Centre ‘PRASHANT’, we focus on human rights, justice and peace and a key dimension of our work is the scanning and documenting from eighteen major daily newspapers in English, Gujarati and Hindi. It is simply unbelievable that these past few days, in several newspapers five and even seven pages are devoted to full-page advertisements. The advertisements are varied: of major sales and discounts; the announcements of brand new products and of course, the propaganda of political parties (mainly the BJP). These advertisements certainly cost a pretty sum; when one gives importance to such crass commercialisation, then the newspaper loses its very heart and soul. Remember the big talk of “black money?” · The Co-option Of The Media Corporatisation and commercialisation of the media have plenty to do with its co-option. So in a way, this becomes

A

major dispute at the recently concluded Extraor dinary Synod on the Family, described by Tokyo Archbishop Peter Takeo Okada as "white hot", concerned the Church's practice of denying the Eucharist to those who have remarried following a divorce. In a commentary sent to the Katorikku Shimbun, Japan's national Catholic weekly, the archbishop said that "the participating bishops demonstrated one of two BY FR WILLIAM GRIMM orientations. One was the desire to be pastoral, providing comfort, encouragement, help and hope to families worn down by pain.... On the other hand, some stressed the necessity of deepening the commitment to and conveying the teaching of Christ." Those who opposed relaxing the rule cited the command of Jesus (Mark 10:10-12, modified and softened in Matthew) saying that remarriage following divorce is adultery. Among those hierarchs who most vehemently insist upon literal observance of Jesus's words (though Jesus is never recorded to have spoken at all of either allowing or denying people access to the Eucharist) are some cardinals whose photos can be found on the Internet showing them wearing the cappa magna, a red cape with a hood lined with ermine or silk that was shortened from 15 meters to seven (49 feet to 25 feet) in 1952 and generally disappeared from ecclesiastical haberdashery after Vatican II. Originally, the great length was intended to cover the rear end of the horse as a bishop or cardinal rode. Reportedly, such a cape costs several thousand dollars — a far cry from swaddling clothes. Clearly, those cardinals have found a way to reconcile their fashion sense with Jesus' stern warning against ostentatious garb for religious leaders who impose burdens on others (Matthew 23:2-7). Apparently, they think that while some verses of Scripture must be taken literally, others may be pursued as optional ideals for the heroically holy, some (Contd.. on p. 4)

(Contd.. from p. 3) can be entertained as mere suggestions and some should be ignored. They presumably reserve to themselves the authority to decide to which category a particular Scriptural injunction belongs. Some who seek to allow people whose marriages have failed to once again share fully the life of the Catholic community point to the practice of the Orthodox Church, where a period of penitence may be followed by a second or even third marriage. However, this ignores the fact that sometimes marriages fail without anyone being at fault. Rather than repentance, what might be needed is a period or even a ceremony of mourning for the hopes that have evaporated, for the shared life that has for whatever reason come to an end. Men and women grow and change throughout their lives, and the couple that spoke vows in the past can — and do — become different people from those who were joined together in matrimony. Any real relationship is constantly reaffirmed. A marriage is no different. Each day and in myriad ways, spouses renew their vows. But, sometimes that renewal becomes impossible, or even ill-advised, as when domestic violence in one form or other becomes part of their shared existence. In spite of their best efforts, their union might no longer be a sacrament of love, but instead an ongoing experience of frustration, anger, pain and hopelessness. Sometimes, their life together has become an arena of spiritual, psychological, social and even

Pope calls for abolishment of capital punishment, life imprisonment

P

ope Francis called for abolition of the death penalty as well as life imprisonment, and denounced what he called a "penal populism" that promises to solve society's problems by punishing crime instead of pursuing social justice. "It is impossible to imagine that states today cannot make use of another means than capital punishment to defend peoples' lives from an unjust aggressor," the pope said Oct. 23 in a meeting with representatives of the International Association of Penal Law. "All Christians and people of good will are thus called today to struggle not only for abolition of the death penalty, whether it be legal or illegal and in all its forms, but also to improve prison conditions, out of respect for the human dignity of persons deprived of

their liberty. And this, I connect with life imprisonment," he said. "Life imprisonment is a hidden death penalty." The pope noted that the Vatican recently eliminated life inprisonment from its own penal code. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church, cited by Pope Francis in his talk, "the traditional teaching of the church does not exclude recourse to the death penalty, if this is the only possible way of effectively defending human lives against the unjust aggressor," but modern advances in protecting society from dangerous criminals mean that "cases in which the execution of the offender is an absolute necessity are very rare, if not practically nonexistent." The pope said that, although a

physical torture. Can God have joined them and kept them joined for this? Without so intending, the Church can present marriage as shackles that chain people together whether it be to their benefit or not, to others’ benefit (for example, their children) or not. This weakens the proclamation of marriage as a sacrament of Christ's relationship with the Church, casting a shadow over those marriages that continue to mature and grow. Such marriages can be better signs when there is no doubt about the freedom in which the sign, the relationship, is lived. The current practice in declaring an annulment is to engage in marital archeology, looking back to the time when a marriage began in order to excavate evidence that one or both of the parties was unable or unwilling to contract a marriage once upon a time. It depends upon the not-always-given and not-always-possible cooperation of various people — the couple themselves, family, old friends, etc.

Instead of simply searching the past, why not look at the present to see if the people that they have become are able to live the marriage covenant? Must they be held hostage to their past, to people (their younger selves) who no longer exist? In other words, as it is now possible to declare a marriage annulled because it never really took place, it should be possible to make a declaration of nullity based upon the fact that a relationship that may have been a marriage at one point in the past has ceased to be so. Just as the physical death of a spouse may be followed by remarriage without affecting one's ability to share in the sacramental life of the Church, such should be the case when the spousal relationship, the marriage, has died.

number of countries have formally abolished capital punishment, "the death penalty, illegally and to a varying extent, is applied all over the planet," because "extrajudicial executions" are often disguised as "clashes with offenders or presented as the undesired consequences of the reasonable, necessary and proportionate use of force to apply the law." The pope denounced the detention of prisoners without trial, who he said account for more than 50 percent of all incarcerated people in some countries. He said maximum security prisons can be a form of torture, since their "principal characteristic is none other than external isolation," which can lead to "psychic and physical sufferings such as paranoia, anxiety, depression and weight loss and significantly increase the chance of suicide." He also rebuked unspecified governments involved in kidnapping people for "illegal transportation to detention centers in which torture is practiced."

The pope said criminal penalties should not apply to children, and should be waived or limited for the elderly, who "on the basis of their very errors can offer lessons to the rest of society. We don't learn only from the virtues of saints but also from the failings and errors of sinners." Pope Francis said contemporary societies overuse criminal punishment, partially out of a primitive tendency to offer up "sacrificial victims, accused of the disgraces that strike the community." The pope said some politicians and members of the media promote "violence and revenge, public and private, not only against those responsible for crimes, but also against those under suspicion, justified or not." He denounced a growing tendency to think that the "most varied social problems can be resolved through public punishment ... that by means of that punishment we can obtain benefits that would require the implementation of another type of social policy, economic policy and policy of social inclusion."

Using techniques similar to those of racist regimes of the past, the pope said, unspecified forces today create "stereotypical figures that sum up the characteristics that society perceives as threatening." Pope Francis concluded his talk by denouncing human trafficking and corruption, both crimes he said "could never be committed without the complicity, active or passive, of public authorities." The pope spoke scathingly about the mentality of the typical corrupt person, whom he described as conceited, unable to accept criticism, and prompt to insult and even persecute those who disagree with him. "The corrupt one does not perceive his own corruption. It is a little like what happens with bad breath: someone who has it hardly ever realizes it; other people notice and have to tell him," the pope said. "Corruption is an evil greater than sin. More than forgiveness, this evil needs to be cured." Courtesy: CNS

Inconclusive synod The extraordinary synod of over 200 bishops which came to a close on October 19, 2014, on an inconclusive note, failed to reach a consensus on some pressing X-Spam-Subject: YES X-Spam-Subject: YES issues such as same- sex unions, and divorce and remarriage of Catholic couples. We will now have to wait for another year for pastoral guidelines to be formulated during the Synod of 2015 , which will hopefully cone as good news to those families and couples living in crisis situations and not in full communion with the church. However, it is difficult to visualize a Catholic church reconciled to couples in live-in relations and same sex-unions as well as families of gays and lesbians as part of God’s loving design , when all along such relationships were taboo and sinful and violative of the sanctity of marriage and

its Trinitarian dimension through the sacrament of matrimony. Nevertheless, the words of Pope Francis that “ God is not afraid of change” and “ Who am I to decide” seem reassuring and a sure indication of the positive direction in which the church is moving and a sign of the changing times.

A lot of money in India is spent in the bursting of crackers on all the five days of the Deepavali festival. Why don’t the people spend the same money to feed the poor and the underprivileged people of our country? In India, there are millions of people who are poor and keep starving. They don’t even get decent clothes to wear and a morsel of food to eat. Instead of wasting money in the bursting of crackers and other unnecessarily things, the money can be donated to an orphanage or Home for the Aged. At least these people who have no one to be taken care of can get a morsel of food to eat and decent clothes to wear. Give it a thought! It will make others happy and God will bless you abundantly.

Challenges Facing Print Media In India Today! (Contd.. from p. 2) a logical outcome of the first two. Cooption essentially means losing your ability to think for yourself; you have to toe a given line, you have to ensure the banner headlines (even if they are lies) are done to suit the wishes and the fancies of the bosses; you have to carefully avoid instances / events or news which might put those who control you, in poor light. We have hundreds of examples in and around us to exemplify how media gets so easily coopted today. We are all familiar with the term “paid media!” · The Compromising Of The Media The word ‘compromise’ is a highly nuanced one; “a compromise is a situation in which people accept something slightly different from what they really want, because of circumstances or because they are considering the wishes of the other people”. So a compromise essentially means that you have a possibility of making a decision but because of fear or / and favour, one would rather go with what( one thinks/ knows), the big boss wants. In May 2014, after the General Elections, I was invited by the editor of ‘The New Leader’ to write the cover story for the fortnightly (June 1 – 15, 2014, Vol. 1 – 7, No 11). I did do so, what I think is a fairly balanced but analytical article, which was well received (given the number of calls / mails I received after that). The editor (a lay man) of Gujarati Catholic monthly ‘The DOOT’ (‘the Messenger’ which is managed and owned by the Jesuits of Gujarat) - congratulated me on the article and asked if it could be published in a forthcoming issue of DOOT. My response was naturally a very positive one and I immediately had the article translated in Gujarati and sent to him; but that article never appeared in the DOOT. More than three months later, at a casual meeting, the editor informs me that the article was not published because a couple of people on the editorial board said it might have repercussions on the magazine (no comments needed!!!)

· The communalisation of the media In India, we are seeing this as never before. We need to glance through almost any daily newspaper to realize this. On careful analysis of a news story, it is so blatantly obvious that a Dilip Shah who kills another is not referred as a ‘Hindu’ murderer; but if it is a Javed Sheikh, he is then very carefully painted as Muslim or someone belonging to the minority community! Look at the way “love Jihad” hogged the headlines for several weeks! There are very subtle and direct attacks on minorities. What is meticulously propagated is the well-being of the majority community. Communalisation through the media is able to orchestrate the divide between the majority and minority communities of the country. PERSPECTIVE The above 5 C’s (Corporatisation, Commercialisation, Co-option, Compromising, Communalisation) are some of the major challenges that the media in India faces. How then do we respond to these challenges – as a backgrounder for this response, I invite all those present here to revisit ‘Inter Mirifica’ (the Decree on the means of Social Communications) which was a key document of the Second Vatican Council and whose Golden Jubilee we celebrated less than a year ago on December 4th, 2013. Do we then have a perspective? In September 2013, Pope Francis while addressing the Pontifical Council for Social Communications in Rome said “the Decree (Inter Mirifica) expresses the Church’s solicitude for communication in all its forms which are important tools in the work of evangelization”. He went on further to say, “the world of Communications, more and more has become an ‘environment’ for many, one in which people communicate with one another expanding their possibilities for knowledge and relationship. I wish to underline these positive aspects notwithstanding the limits and the harmful factors that also exist and which we are all aware of.” It is significant, therefore that ten

years ago in January 2004, the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) at their meeting in Trichur gave to the Church in India plenty of food for thought and action in their statement “Called to be a Communicating Church”. As ICPA and others involved in the media, we are challenged to reflect and act urgently on many critical dimensions of this all-pervasive ministry. These include: Have we, as Church, taken Social Communications (sp. the print-media) seriously? Have we understood its power and potential in our works of evangelization? Do we have a Social Communications Commission in our diocese? (the Commission should necessarily constitute persons from all walks of life and these should include lay professionals in communications) Do we engage as Church vocally (writing) and visibly in confronting injustices that plague our society like discrimination, displacement, corruption, communalism, casteism? Have we prophetically denounced the grave ills in our society in order to boldly proclaim the ‘good news’? Do we engage in social media on important issues concerning Constitutional rights and freedoms of all? These and several other concerns can be raised - all of them have been reflected in ‘Inter Mirifica’ and in the many pastoral messages written on Communications (for Communications Sunday) by the Holy Father every year. It is therefore not without reason that Pope Francis has chosen as theme for his first message on World Communications Day 2014 “Communication at the service of an authentic culture of encounter”. The Pontifical Council for Social Communications says that “this will explore the potential of communication especially in a networked and connected world, to bring people closer to each other and to cooperate in the task of building a more just world.” This theme in fact truly reflects all that ‘Inter Mirifica’ is about: “the proper exercise of this right (to information)

Eucharistic Miracles Justify Faith And Belief

T

here is a vast gap of perception between miracles and Eucharis tic miracles. Both are more powerful than reason and easy to evoke as they remind people of their mortality. The more profoundly frightening miracle is when a person doubts the presence of Christ in the Blessed Sacrament – and the Host bleeds. It has been proved that every drop of blood is human and has the blood type(AB), and the blood contains proteins in the same proportions as are found in fresh normal blood. St. Alphonsus Laguori made great efforts in his lifetime to promote private visits to the Blessed Sacrament in the eighteenth century. It was during the Renaissance when the tabernacle was erected on the main altar. This helped to encourage the development and promotion of Eucharistic adoration. Down the chapters of Christian history, Jesus Christ has proved His presence in the Blessed Sacrament. It has been noted that Eucharistic miracles have taken place during times when the Faith is weak. Often when a person doubts the Real Presence, a miracle results. At this point it is interesting to read the Gospel ofSt. John, where he tells us of Thomas, the Apostle, who had to place his finger in the side of the Risen Lord and touch the Master for assurance. When he eventually did he exclaimed: “My Lord and My God”. Jesus said to Thomas, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet believe.” (Jn.20:27-29). Eucharistic miracles always raise standards of the living faith in believers significantly and supercharge their spiritual life – as seen when thousands of pilgrims visit places where miracles have materialized. Over the past few decades a certain loss of interest in Eucharistic adoration has been observed. In ’doctrinal order’ two points should be considered. First, there is a tendency to contemplate less on the consecrated Host outside the time of

8

BY MELVYN BROWN the sacrifice of the Mass. Secondly, the encouragement of this worship came late. In some places the Eucharist was adored only at Mass and Communion. Around the Middle Ages the new rite of the Mass made the Real Presence felt. In Bolsena Orvieta, Italy,a priest had problems believing in the Real Presence. His doubts lay deeply entrenched in his mind. Prayers could not release the agony of his distrust and the constant inner fear he carried. Then, one day while celebrating the holy sacrifice of the Mass, blood began seeping out of the Host on consecration. Pope Urban IV heard of the miracle and commissioned the feast of Corpus Christi to be an annual event in Bolsena. Roman Catholics, Christians and believers, all know in true faith that the consecrated Host is the Body and Blood of Our Lord, in the form of bread and wine. When incidences of Eucharistic miracles arise, we discover that the Host turns into ‘human flesh and blood’. Through these miracles Jesus manifests His Presence in a tangible way. The real world has seen many Eucharistic miracles, and only a few are accepted as authentic by Holy Mother the Church. One of the most powerful Eucharistic miracles took place in Italy at Lanciano. A Basilian monk, in the year 700 had continuous doubts about the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. One day, as he was offering the Holy Sacrifice, following the words of consecration, the bread literally changed into Flesh and the wine into Blood, which later coagulated into five irregular globules; these were later placed in a precious ivory container. In 1713 they were enshrined in an artistic silver monstrance in which they are preserved

even to the present day at the church of St. Francis in Lanciano. In November of 1970 a team of medical experts convened to begin an investigation. On March 4, 1971 the complete report was ready. The analyses verified the following : The Flesh is real human flesh. The Blood is real human blood. The Flesh and the Blood have the same blood type (AB). There is a close and required connection between the Eucharist and the mystery of the Church. It is relevant for the faithful to know of the Eucharistic mystery we face in life. “ It is important that the mystery of the Eucharist should shine out before the eyes of the faithful in its true light.” (Vatican Council II. Pg 107, Sacred Liturgy). Pope Paul VI in his Encyclical Mysterium Fidei, had mentioned the Eucharistic doctrine on the Real Presence of Christ and the ‘worship’ due to the sacrament outside the Mass.(VC II). The Son of God in the human nature, which he united to himself, redeemed man and transformed him into a new creation by overcoming death through his own death and resurrection. (Gal.6:15). Each time the Mass is celebrated the Eucharistic miracle takes place. When Christians understand this it will be reflected in their actions. It was revealed that most Catholics found it difficult to understand the Real Presence of Christ in the consecrated Host. Because of this, the Athenaeum Regina Apostolorum held a Conference on miracles connected to the Eucharist for the “faithful to comprehend the incomprehensible” (Zenit). Eucharistic miracles help to retain the faith and belief in the people of God. Many non-believers have been witness to Eucharistic miracles and it has played a dramatic role in their lives. Bl. Chavara Burial Place Controversy Lands In Court

Fire destroys Shillong Church, Short Circuit Suspected SHILLONG : A 10-year-old Roman Catholic Church here was razed to the ground by a devastating fire in the wee hours of Monday, a church priest said.

Kochi: The dispute over the final resting place of Belssed Chavara, after 143 years of his death, has finally landed in the court as the Church prepares for the canonization of the saintly priest. A petition has been filed before the Munsiff Court, Ernakulam, seeking an order to restrain a Kottayam-based publishing house from publishing a book on Fr Chavara written by M K Sanu. The petitioner, Basil Attippetty, allege that the book contains distorted facts and perverted history about the life of Fr Chavara, the Indian Express reported. The petitioner also sought a directive to Apostolic Nuncio to India Archbishop Salvatore Pennacchio that the canonization of Fr Chavara be confined to his burial place at Koonammavu, in Ernakulam District, and to the St Phelomina’s Church and the shrine at Koonammavu. The petition alleged that the narration in the book that the mortal remains of Fr Chavara were transferred from the St Phelomina’s Church to the Mannanam Monastery in Kottayam District, was not true. The vice-postulator of the St Joseph’s Syro Malabar Monastery (CMI) has distorted the fact only to make unlawful monetary gains, by misleading the faithful,” the petitioner alleged.

3 November 2014

The petitioner argued that as per Article-25 of the Constitution, a buried dead body should not be removed, altered or shifted from the buried place. “Shifting a dead body from the burial place without the sanction of the authority concerned is an offence punishable under Section-297 of the IPC,” the petition stated. “If anyone has claimed to have shifted the mortal remains of Fr Chavara from Koonammavu to Mannanam it is a continuing offence and barbaric act. “The theft of the mortal remains of a person is an offence and the claim of continuity of that offence is also an offence,” the petitioner submitted. The petitioner further alleged that the narration in the book about the transfer of the mortal remains was aimed only at demeaning and denigrating the reputation of Fr Chavara. “Spreading false news through the book is a willful act done with ulterior motive and malafide intention to support and help the persons who have vested interests,” the petitioner said. Another argument raised by the petitioner is that Vatican, which is a foreign state, should have obtained prior sanction from the Government of India to canonise Fr Chavara, who was an Indian citizen. Musiff Anupama C G had issued notices to the defendants in the case. Source: New Indian Express

The wooden structure of the Visitation Church of the Catholic Archdiocese at Mawpren in Shillong was reduced to ashes by fire. The Visitation Church was established ten years ago with an aim to expand the ideals of the St. Joseph’s Parish Church to enable the faithfuls to have their church services in the localities. Speaking to reporters, the Parish Priest of Visitation Church, Fr. Leo Lohbor said that the wooden church was gutted by fire at 1.00 a.m. today due to electrical short circuit and the inferno reduced the church to ashes within half an hour. “We are very fortunate because the surrounding houses and cemented buildings were not affected by the fire,” Fr. Lohbor said. The fire tenders did their best to douse the blaze. He also informed that all the church articles and items including garments, chalices and Bibles were damaged by the fire. Local rescue workers tried to extinguish the blaze after fire tenders were delayed due to overnight parking in the narrow roads leading to the Church. Asked if he suspected arson, the parish priest said: “We don’t suspect anybody to be behind the fire tragedy. We think it could be because of an electrical short circuit.” Fire and emergency services officials, meanwhile, have started investigation to find out the exact cause of the blaze. “We are yet to determine the cause of the fire but preliminary investigations hint at an electrical short-circuit,” Deputy Fire Service Officer SC Nath said.

Thank you CM, for Rejecting Somashekara Inquiry Commission Report Dear Shri Siddaramaiah, Peace of Christ and Greetings from the Archdiocese of Bangalore. May the festival of light bring peace, joy and prosperity to you and all the people of Karnataka. At the outset, let me on behalf of the entire Christian Community in Karnataka thank you and congratulate you and all your Cabinet colleagues as also the State Government for rejecting the Final Report of the Justice B.K. Somashekara Inquiry Commission, which was our demand from the time the final report was submitted to the State Government. We would like to especially thank you and express our warm fundamentalist appreciation for the assurance given to mete out justice to the Christian Community, particularly the victims who were inhumanly and brutally attacked and mercilessly tortured by the religious groups. Your party, at the time of the Church attacks in 2008 and 2009, had joined us in condemning the then Government for its partisan, lethargic and non-responsive attitude, as also for supporting the perpetrators for their acts of vandalism and lawlessness. We appreciate the assurance given to the Christian Community that its interest would be protected and to safeguard its religious fundamental rights. As we may sadly recall, a series of attacks against the churches and our places of worship were systematically carried out in 2008 and 2009 by some religious fundamentalist groups in connivance with and the open support of the civil administration and the police officials. These shameful and condemnable incidents drew not only the attention and sympathies of the entire State and Country but also the whole world as the attacks were well planned and executed with a view to creating fear and insecurity among the members of the Christian community. What really surprised and shocked us was that all these attacks and vandalisms were carefully planned and methodically executed with the support and patronage

10

of the then State Government and unfortunately some of the officers in the Government Departments and a few fanatic leaders of a particular religious community. When the church attacks took place, the entire Christian community condemned them and asked the then State Government to look into this matter and mete out justice to the Christian Community. Due to our repeated pressure, the then State Government had constituted the Justice Somashekara Inquiry Commission. This commission, in its interim report held a few fundamentalist religious groups responsible for the church attacks; but to our utter dismay, surprise and shock, exonerated all these groups and gave them a clean chit in its final report, by saying that such attacks were triggered allegedly by conversion by some Christian outfits. As this accusation of the commission was totally false and baseless, the entire Christian Community rose in protest and rejected the final report and demanded its rejection in toto. As the final report of the Justice Somashekara Inquiry Commission was very unfair, it created displeasure and dissatisfaction to the Christian Community and we expressed our hurt feelings and religious sentiments to the then Government. Being deeply rooted in our trust in God, we prayed for the victims to get spiritual strength and courage to bear patiently the humiliations and pain and also for the perpetrators to come to their senses and change their attitude towards the Christians and other minority communities in the State. We made several representations to the Government, the then Governor, the Human Right Commissions and other Bodies to get justice and to safeguard the Christian minority in the State. But we were grossly disappointed at the apathetic attitude of the then State Govt. When the biased, partisan and totally one-sided Final Report of the Justice Somashekara Inquiry Commission was presented in January 2011 to

the then State Government as mentioned above, the entire Christian Community rejected and condemned it. A number of protest Rallies were held all over Karnataka by the Christians, Members of the Human Rights Commission and the people of goodwill to express their solidarity with the suffering victims and the Christians. A delegation of Catholic Bishops and the leaders of all Christian denominations had conducted a Prayer Service on February 19, 2011 at St. Mark’s Cathedral, and also held a dharna in front of Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue on M.G. Road. Later, on the same day, the delegation presented a Memorandum to Mr. R. Ashok, the then Deputy Chief Minister and also the State Home Minister, with a request to reject the final Report of the Commission and refer the church attack cases to the CBI for a fair and impartial inquiry. The Christians also held a mammoth State-wide Protest Rally on February 22, 2011 at St. Francis Xavier’s Cathedral Grounds and urged the then ruling BJP government to reject it. But, our appeal was not complied with and justice was denied to us. Dear Sir, on behalf of the entire Christian Community, I thank you and the State Government for rejecting the Final Report of the Justice Somashekara Commission, and may I also request the State Government – · to implement the recommendations o f the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC); · to provide compensation to victims of attacks whose properties were damaged, jobs and income were lost; · to ensure security to Christian churches and institutions; · to bring culprits to book through effective action; · to disallow local religious fundamental groups to take the law into their hands; · to take effective action against the officials who have colluded with (Contd.. on p. 17)

Beggars Are Not Choosers That’s what precisely the BJP is conveying to the Shiv Sena who thought it could take them on. The election results have shown all the political parties their rightful places in Indian polity. The Congress and the NCP in Maharashtra were doomed anyway even before the elections. It is rather surprising that they could get as many seats under the given circumstances. For Shiv Sena it was a setback but the real loser all the way was MNS which bore the major brunt of the BJP ascendancy. Both are licking their wounds. ‘UTha’ which also means ‘get up’ – the Shiv Sena call to the people, did not work. People got up [with higher voting percentage] and voted for the BJP and showed that the regional party is only a paper tiger. This is a set-back for Uddhav Thackarey personally who has systematically sidelined the veterans in the party of past vintage. After the desertion by Raj Thackarey, the usually calm and suave UTha donned the mantle of an aggressive politician to counter the cousin. He managed to keep him at bay and ensured that the MNS is decimated – first in the Lok Sabha and now in the assembly elections. With NCP led by the wily Sharad Pawar extending unsolicited ‘outside’ support, all the calculations of the Shiv Sena went wary and has been forced to climb down from the high pedestal. Uddhav was being totally ignored by the BJP to teach him a lesson once and for all. A desperate Uddhav panicked and almost bent backwards to woo the BJP. Till Diwali, the BJP had not spelt out its terms to them. Finally they will throw some crumbs on ‘take it or leave it’ basis and the Sena will have to accept it. The BJP is even contemplating going ‘solo’ as a minority government with the help of fringe parties and independents – the reward for them could be in cash or kind. By not declining the NCP offer, the BJP skillfully used it to convey to the Sena that it is irrelevant in the present context and that their support is not crucial. Taking the NCP offer was not the option the BJP would have gone for. The BJP then berated AAP for accepting support from the Congress which was AAP’s main target during the campaign. In Maharashtra, the BJP’s main

3 November 2014

VIEWS on NEWS target was the Congress and the NCP – particularly the latter for gross corruption. The BJP would have stood fully exposed for its double standards. They say, the people of Maharashtra, have given them mandate to form the government by virtue of being the single largest party. By the way, even in Delhi BJP was the single largest party but stayed away and preferred to sit in the opposition. Whatever may be the final decision of the BJP vis-à-vis the NCP, their reputation is sullied. They are prepared to go any length when it comes to power. The infighting for the CMship shows the party in very poor light. Will Mungantiwar be punished? No! The future of Raj Thakarey is bleak. He thought with his aggressive stance, he will dwarf his cousin. In the general elections he scored a ‘duck’ and now managed to get just one despite fielding 288 candidates. What a disaster. He said that he will no longer contest the general elections. Now will be also give up the idea of assembly elections in future. He will never join Uddhav – his ego will not allow him to work under him. Someone sent a Diwali message saying ‘This Diwali burn egos not crackers’. His supporters will abandon him for greener pastures leaving him to head one man party like Subramanium Swamy who held on to his Janata party for years which he recently merged with the BJP. The same option is available to Raj. *****

Development v/s Hindutva In a major shift, the BJP fought the twin elections in Maharashtra and Haryana on the development plank and anti-corruption stance. Like the general elections, the party scored handsomely in these two states though they would have liked a comfortable majority in both. This has shown that the people are not swayed by communal appeal. They want development and good governance to ensure a better quality of life. During the by-elections in some states including the Uttar Pradesh, radical elements within the party and the larger Sangh Parivar, were given a free hand to go whole hog to stir communal

by Marshall Sequeira tensions through radical statements. The BJP was ‘testing the waters’ to see how it works. The highly explosive statements of some of their leaders were so inflammatory that there were apprehensions about the possible fall-out of such outbursts. Mercifully, the electorate in all the states which went for by-elections did not appreciate the party’s deviation from development. The electorate had sent a clear message to the party that it had to stick to its development plank alone if they want support. Saner elements within the party realized that any such deviation from the declared path would prove disastrous with negative effect. The radical elements were discreetly told to keep their mouths shut. The entire election campaign in Maharashtra and Haryana was centered on development, governance and corruption. The results are there to see for all. It has sent a message to the BJP itself that they should, in future too, desist from going astray. It is hoped that the party will take the message seriously and abandon communal politics once and for all. This will ensure a long innings at the centre as well as states. All the political leaders in Maharashtra who have a baggage of corruption against their names and who have prominently figured in inquiry committees will have sleepless nights. The new government is likely to give a go ahead to the investigating authorities to proceed against the corrupt leaders of the previous government. The NCP thought by declaring support even when the counting was on, it could insulate itself from investigation and prosecution of its top leaders. Though it was a master stroke, people saw through the game and their leaders were at pains to explain to the people that their intensions were really in national interests. People of Maharashtra facing oppressive October heat enjoyed their joke all the same.

Challenges Facing Print Media In India Today! (Contd.. from p. 1) demands that the content of the communication be true and – within the limits set by justice and charity – complete” (#5) and “all the members of the Church should make a concerted effort to ensure that the means of communication are put at the service of the multiple forms of the apostolate without delay and as energetically as possible, where and when they are needed. They should forestall projects likely to prove harmful, especially in those regions where moral and religious progress would require their intervention more urgently.” (#13) A WAY AHEAD In the light of the above and at this National Convention of the Indian Catholic Press Association, I would like therefore to propose a definite plan of action for all those engaged in the print media in India. The plan of action should include:

Jose Vincent K J, Secretary and Rev. Fr. Alfonso Elengikal,

President of Indian Catholic Press Association (ICPA) · That one should never be comis that it highlights activities / events promised on Gospel values very of Bishops, Priests and Nuns - they particularly on truth, human rights hardly educate, but in fact domestiand justice cate · That every effort should be made to enter mainstream print media (both · That we need to encourage as many as possible to maintain their own vernacular and English) as journalblogs, to have a facebook page, to ists, writers, editors, whatever tweet and to use the social media. Social media is about communicat· Catholic youth should be trained in ing and we will not be able to comjournalism / media to write letters to municate on social media if we do the editors, articles to important not write newspapers on social issues

· That we need to reinvent our Church newspapers / magazines / bulletins - very few of them are worth the salt. The tragedy of Church media

14

· That we need to network and collaborate with others in the mainstream media

Conclusion The main idea of this presentation is just to set the tone for further deliberations and responses. The challenges we know are many. Like ostriches, we can no longer bury our heads in the sand and think that all is well. The Indian Catholic Press Association will be true to its name only if it demonstrates unbridled courage to be visible and to be vocal (through the written word) given the context and challenges that India faces today. At this juncture, we need to be reminded of the poem by Bertolt Brecht (1898 – 1956), the German Marxist poet, playwright and theatre director who took a stand against Hitler and Nazism and who very poignantly wrote:

“In the dark times Will there also be singing? Yes, there will also be singing. About the dark times!” Thank you very much! (This presentation was made at the National Convention of the ICPA held at Kanyakumari on October 24th, 2014) (* Fr. Some More On ‘Money Has Different Names’!

For Those Suffering From Arthritis

The Secular Citizen, 13 Oct. 2014 on pg. 18 has indeed given us an interesting ‘thesaurus’ on the role of money titled, “Money Has Different Names”! You have furnished us 15 various concepts starting with: In Church it is called an offering; and going on to label it as: fee, bride price, alimony, debt, tax, fine, pension, salary, wages, allowance, loan, tip, ransom, and bribe.

One of the most common ailments that elders suffer from is arthritis. Swelling in joints and acute pain are some of its characteristics, making it difficult for the person to even perform normal activities. Here are some points to keep in mind so that people with arthritis don't strain their joints much:-

Here, I will designate 15 more appellations for our famous transaction called “Money’! -to put in a bank ……………… a currency -to a hotel for payment ……….. a receipt -a thief when he steals ………... a loot -in a paper form ……………….. a cheque -goes in society’s sink ………… a fund -as an official transaction ……... a payment -accumulated over time ……….. a wealth -given to a fiancé……………… a finance -makes a beggar happy………... a dough -to cheer a friend ………………. a cash -what stops here ……………….. a buck -for equity appreciation ……….. a capital -as a form of business………….. a tender -poor man’s possessions……….. a coin

Never put pressure on any one particular joint. For instance, if you are pushing the cupboard to another place or opening a door, make sure you use both your hands or knees to do the same.

Now the ‘big one’ you have asked? “When a husband gives money to his wife… what does one term it? -I term it as …………………….a treasure! Because, one will never be sure how she will spend it; forget returning it! Jesus correctly cautioned: “For where your ‘treasure’ is, there your heart will be also” (Luke, 12:34) —Dr. Trevor Colaso, Bandra

Spreading the strain equally on all joints will ease out the pain. Don't sit in the same position for longer hours. Take a small break in between, go for a short walk in the open or pace the length of the room. Once you form a pattern, stick to it. Leading a sedentary lifestyle is not advisable for people with arthritis. Activities are not harmful, you just need to do them wisely. Push, slide or shove things instead of lifting them. Use your palms to hold things, use your side to push heavy items instead of your thigh or knees. Restrict bending. Organise your house in such a way that you can reach the items you need by just extending your hand. Bending down unnecessarily will cause excess strain to the joints. In case you have to bend down, keep your back straight to even the pressure.

Inspiration!

Essential Life Skills

S

ome people, they just dream of success, power, luxury and respect and then there are others who work hard to make all their dreams come true. To become successful in your personal and professional life you need some personal skills. Go through this list of personal skills and improve your way of living:

have to be careful about the information you display publicly on your profiles on social networking sites.

Adaptability :

Problem-Solving Ability :

The ability to adapt yourself to the ever changing environment can help you reach the pinnacle. Adaptability has now become even more important than ever because things are now changing at much higher pace and the ones who are not flexible enough becomes obsolete. Change is the only thing that remains constant and there is no need to spend an inordinate amount of time thinking about what you don’t have, it’s time you take a step towards change.

With growing competition people have started looking for difference and all the successful entrepreneurs may not have university degrees but what they have is better than the rest. They have the power to create and to think beyond imagination, they have the will to follow their heart and guts to risk everything for what they believe in.

To avoid decision – making is very easy but to make your own decision and then to accept its consequences is a sign of a good leader.

Analytical skills :

In life whether you are on top or on bottom you need to be convincing about your ideas, your perspective and moreover your viewpoint. Encouraging others to adopt your views when they totally have a different stand on the same thing is quite a task to accomplish. For making them believe in you, first you have be sure about your perspective and then have to look at the situation from the other end of the line in order to consider their viewpoint.

Complications have become an inevitable part of our life, every day we have to deal with some or the other problem and therefore effective analytical skills are important so that the complex situations don’t snatch away our peace of mind. Analytical skills help us view a problem from several angles so that we can break it down into smaller parts.
