Rangoli by students of school at Dombivli Railway Station

S

t. Marys English High School & Junior College had done a Rangoli on the Centre Foot Over Railway Bridge at Dombivli station on 26th January 2015 on a social message to the crowd travelling by railways. 2 Rangoli’s were made by our students. The 1st was “Make India Clean India” Prime Minister’s pet project Swach Bharat & 2nd was to inform students & others about rail track crossing. Students usually put on their ear phones and cross the railway tracks which is very dangerous. It took our students nearly 6 hours to make the rangoli on 25th January 2015. The purpose of this rangoli was just to send a message to large crowd travelling not to cross the tracks and keep our premises clean. The Asst. Station Master, Dombivli Raiway Police & R.P.F were invited. The Rangoli was on display till 27th January 2015. —Mrs. Nayana Raikar Principal St. Marys School & Junior College

Education getting rapidly ‘saffronised': Archbishop Bengaluru – Archbishop Bernard Moras of Bangalore on Thursday expressed his concern over the ‘rapid saffronisation’ of the education system in the country and the slow disappearance of secularism in educational institutions. Addressing the 17th All India Association for Christian Higher Education conference here on Thursday, the archbishop said India was a multicultural society and the education imparted at Christian institutions was for all. He said the institutions were not only imparting education, but also preparing the future generation to become the leaders of the nation. He said though it had been more than six decades since the country attained independence, nearly 30 per cent of the population did not have access to basic education. However, he said, South India was fortunate enough to have a large number of educational institutions, deccanherald reported.

2

H G Dr Jacob Mar Irenios, Metropolitan of Kochi, Malankara Orthodox Church, urged the leaders of the Church to contribute to improving the quality of education. Rev Dr Prasanna Kumar, secretary and bishop-designate, Diocese of Central Karnataka of the Church of South India, was also present on the occasion.

'Ghar Wapsi' Why Modi Mum? Any Hidden Agenda? Modi is reminded that religious minorities are not for killing

I

ndia’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, does not like to be told that he, his government, his political party or the cadres of his old group, the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh [RSS], have done something wrong. BY JOHN DAYAL Over the course of three days this week, he was politely reminded that India’s religious minorities, particularly, were uneasy, and any adverse occurrences would seriously impact the promise of development on which he rode to power last year. US President Barack Obama made international headlines with his “town hall” speech in Delhi as he concluded a three-day visit to India for its Republic Day. The speech offered a rather sharp lesson on what makes a country great — not economic progress or military might, but the unity of its people brought about by a shared destiny, the hope of progress among the most marginalized and a sense of security among its religious minorities. But it was the Indian president, the 79-year old Pranab Mukherjee, who delivered a homily that was the strongest caution yet about the threat posed to unity and progress in India from the religious nationalism of the RSS. Mukherjee did not name the RSS, or its many associates in the Sangh Parivar family, but his address to the nation on the eve of Republic Day on January 26 — which marks the promulgation of the constitution in 1950 — dwelt at some length on the issue. In his address, Mukherjee said: “In an international environment where so many countries are sinking into the morass of theocratic violence … we have always reposed our trust in faith-equality where every faith is equal before the law and every culture blends into another to create a positive dynamic. “The violence of the tongue cuts and wounds people's hearts. The Indian constitution is the holy book of democracy. It is a lodestar for the socioeconomic transformation of an India whose civilization has celebrated pluralism, advocated tolerance and promoted goodwill between diverse communities. These values, however, need to be preserved with utmost care and (Contd.. on p. 4)

(Contd.. from p. 3) vigilance.” Mukherjee touched on a point that has worried many among those who voted for Modi, hoping he would bring about change and end the corruption and economic coma in which India found itself in the last years of the Congress administration led by Manmohan Singh. This was the increasing cacophony of many in the Bharatiya Janata Party, including several ministers and members of parliament, who were supporting a demand that India mark itself out as a Hindu Rashtra or Nation, and stop appeasing Muslims and Christians. Both minority religious groups are seen as enemies of the nation and the majority. Some among them were quite stridently asking that the constitution be scrapped and replaced by a more “nationalistic” one rooted not in Western concepts but in India’s Hindu tradi-

Former Bihar chief minister and senior JD-U leader Nitish Kumar Friday asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to publicly disapprove his party BJP's Ghar Wapsi (home returning) campaign, and praise of Mahatma Gandhi's killer and hate speeches made by his party leaders. Hindustan Times tion. Industrialists, bankers and businessmen hoping that the new regime would be able to attract international investors and partners, especially from the US, found its response turning tepid, despite Modi’s much-touted visits to Washington, New York, Beijing and Tokyo. Investors became hesitant not just because economic reforms were not taking place at the speed promised, but also because the country’s human rights environment had, if anything, sharply deteriorated. The so-called “Ghar Wapsi”, or homecoming campaign, launched by the Sangh Parivar just after the general

"Would Modi take his friend Barack's advice and ask his friends in VHP to shut up and request (RSS Chief) Mohan Bhagwat to stop justifying 'ghar wapsi'?" The Congress general secretary wrote, "Obama reminds us of Article 25 of Indian Constitution of the Right of every Citizen of India to progress practice and propagate his religion." —Times of India gious groups, would resume. And resume it did, the day after Obama left India. Recent data shows almost 150 recorded cases of violence against Christians last year, and several in recent days. Violence against Muslims is feared to be several times more. The hate campaign, meanwhile, has been ramped up with government leaks from 2011 census data stating that the Muslim population has soared. The official desegregated data of religious populations is among the last to be made public, but nationalists like to stoke alarm by saying that Muslims breed at a rate that would see them overtake the Hindu population within this century. The leaked data does show an increase in the Muslim population. Even though the growth rate slowed from 29 percent to 24 percent between 1991 and 2001, it is still higher than the national average of 18 percent for the decade. It is not just fringe elements or political mavericks who suggest solutions that would be deemed anti-democratic even in military dictatorships — including disenfranchisement of religious groups, or asking Hindu women

to produce 10 or more children to maintain a demographic superiority. There is controversy now about a series of media advertisements by the government that has illustrations of the illustrated preamble of the constitution without two key words, “secular” and “socialist”. These words were not there in the document signed on January 26, 1950, but were introduced in an amendment passed by parliament in the 1970s. Much of the social legislation passed in the closing decades of the last century, including employment for rural poor, and scholarships for Muslim youth in particular, were born from those two words. Talk among those in the highest quarters that the constitution is better off without socialism and secularism has understandably sent shockwaves among the rural poor, Tribals, Dalits, as well as Muslims and Christians in gen-

The Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) has sought Prime Minister Narendra Modi's urgent intervention to end the "anxieties of the community" over issues like "Ghar Wapsi" and "saffronisation of education." There are growing calls for the Modi government to heed Mukherjee’s warning and stop political discourse becoming a competition in hysteria. Obama’s parting, and cutting, remarks are evidence that the world is watching India as it stakes its claim to be a member of the elite global economic and strategic clubs. “Our nations are strongest when we see that we are all God’s children — all equal in His eyes and worthy of His love… Our freedom of religion is written into our founding documents. It’s part of America’s very first amendment,” (Contd.. on p. 5)

The 'reconversion' row along with controversial remarks made by various BJP leaders, as well as the extended Sangh Parivaar, over the last month have cast a long shadow over Prime Minister Narendra Modi's 'sabka sath, sabka vikas' agenda. What remains unclear, however, is what the PM himself makes of this derailing of his development discourse. —First Post of every person,” he said. “Every person has the right to practice their faith how they choose, or to practice no faith at all, and to do so free of persecution and fear and discrimination.” Unfortunately, many in the Indian civil rights movement, especially activists on freedom of faith issues, fear their struggle will get increasingly grimmer. Govt Silence On ‘Ghar Wapsi' Irks Cardinal Oswald Gracias

A

s a child growing up in cosmo politan Mahim, Oswald Cardi nal Gracias, now archbishop of Mumbai, was surrounded by people of all faith. “There were Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians in our neighbourhood. We would celebrate each other’s festivals and none of us felt any different on account of religion. The beauty of India lies in the rich mosaic of cultures, languages and cuisines that co-exist in one country,” Cardinal Gracias says. However, he now fears an agenda to divide the country along religious lines and erode its secular fabric, cautioning that it will cause great harm. At a time when BJP MPs like Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti are asking people to vote for ‘children of Ram’ and not ‘illegitimate children’, he says it’s a shame the government has shown no signs of disapproving such acts. “I wonder if this is a deliberate strategy of the government. Delegations from the Church that have visited the prime minister over such matters have not returned reassured that things would get any better,” he says. The government’s silence on the involvement of its MPs in communal activities, he says, makes him wonder if it is because it supports such actions, reported timesofindia. While India’s religious right wing has accused Christians of forced conversions, he says that’s something the Roman Catholic Church would condemn. “But when it comes to acts such as ghar wapsi, I see both force and inducement…A person who wishes to convert to the Catholic faith must undergo a rigorous two-year training programme before doing so. After the programme, we need a letter from a priest endorsing that the person has understood the religion before he/she is allowed to convert,” he adds.

Cardinal Gracias points to the irony that religious extremists have no problem using services provided by Christians, such as schools and hospitals, while continuing to target the community. “We are very happy to serve everybody. But those who have benefited from our services should have understood our purpose.” An attempt to fragment India along religious lines will hurt the country and destroy the fabric of the nation, he warns, adding that the attempt to force India to fit into the mould of one monolithic society is absurd. “I was once at an event with German chancellor Angela Merkel in Europe. When she spoke of the diversity of the European Union, I told her we had greater diversity in India,” he recalled. While concerned over the turn of events in the country, Cardinal Gracias remains optimistic and says he is sure good sense will prevail. He believes that most people in India are not communal and will ensure a course correction if the country is veering down a path that is not good for it. “I had very good relations with the previous NDA government and I got along very well with the then PM Atal Bihari Vaypayee. He was a delightful man and very reasonable,” says Cardinal Gracias, who feels the current government seems more hardline in its religious views than the earlier NDA government. “This government has a tremendous opportunity to take the country forward on the development front, having won the majority in the Lok Sabha. With one party at the Centre, the government can be effective and implement projects it wants. But this cannot be achieved in the face of growing communalism. It will only give India a bad name and hinder progress,” he says.

Last Prophet of the Old Testament

M

elvyn Brown in the above ar ticle, The Secular Citizen, 02 Feb.2015 has failed to mention five important episodes regarding John the Baptist:

1) At the Visitation: “The child (John) leaped for joy” (Luke, 1:44). 2) Besides, Melvyn mentioning “messenger” in Malachi 3:1, this word is also mentioned in all the three synoptic Gospels (Mt. 11:10; Mk. 1:2; Lk. 7:27) by Jesus himself. 3) “Voice of one crying in the wilderness” (Mt. 3:3; Mk. 1:3; Lk. 3:4; Isa. 40:3). 4) Theophany: It is the visible manifestation of God to humankind. The Baptism of our LORD is the only occasion wherein the TRINITY is revealed – The SPIRIT in the form of a Dove, and the voice of the FATHER – “This is My SON, the beloved with Whom I AM well pleased” (Mt. 3:17; Mk. 1:11; Lk. 3:22). These words were also repeated at the Transfiguration (Mt. 17:5; Mk. 9:7; Lk. 9:35; 2 Pet. 1:17). 5) Divine Mercy: It is the first public proclamation of the ‘Divine Mercy’ through Zachariah’s prophecy and word in the New Testament: a) “shown the ‘mercy’ promised to our ancestors” (Luke, 1:72). b) “by the tender ‘mercy’ of our GOD” (Luke,1:78) —Dr Trevor Colaso

Neglected ABE Institutions of Mumbai

ith reference to the article ’Let two or ,more wrongs choose’ by Don Aguiar (Secular Citizen, Jan 26), I must say that as an ex-Mumbaikar who did his entire schooling and college education in Catholic educational institutions of erstwhile Bombay, I was pained to read about the dwindling standard of education and the poor treatment meted out to teachers of our once much-revered and prestigious centres of learning and character formation. While the reasons for this could be many, the Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE) cannot escape blame or responsibility for its lackadaisical approach to the overall supervision and governance of its 100 plus institutions and the utter negligence and casual approach to the grievances of the teaching staff. It is also not right to apportion blame on his eminence Cardinal

Oswald Gracias who , as advisor to His Holiness Pope Francis, is required to be present at various and frequent times in Rome. We seem to have forgotten this great honour to our country and to the Archdiocese of Bombay, to which Cardinal Oswald originally belonged. Incidentally, I too was a lifetime parishioner and student of St Michael’s, Mahim, of which I am proud. Secondly, looking at the way our Archdiocese in Goa is run by a single Archbishop, I feel that Mumbai is blessed by having 5 auxiliary bishops to assist the Archbishop. Is it therefore too much to hand over charge to one of the bishops to revamp the ABE? I don’t think this is a problem provided there is a will to act and restore these neglected institutions to their former glory and excellence.

On Obama’s Cautionary Remarks President Obama’s cautionary remarks on the dangers of ‘religious divide’ in our country comes not a day too soon and assumes significance in the wake of the world-wide growing religious intolerance and violence, and the recent killings of the ‘Charlie Hebdo’ journalists, which received condemnation by over 40 world leaders who undertook a solidarity march with the slain journalists through the streets of Paris. It is also a reminder to the India govt of its responsibility to uphold the fundamental rights of freedom of worship and right to practise and propagate the religion of one’s choice as enshrined in our secular Constitution, especially at a time when the govt is considering expediting the ’Anti-conversion’ bill which will ban religious conversions in the country, and some bigoted elements seeking to change our secular Constitution. —A.

God Made No Mistake I totally agree with Prof. Robert Castellino's letter in the 2nd February issue of TSC. God did not make a 'mistake' when he created the mentally challenged. He has created these special people to teach us lessons in cheerfulness, simplicity, love and genuineness. God does not judge us by the narrow definition of our capabilities and what we achieve in life. He values the mentally challenged more than He does willy politicians and super achievers. They are gifted in special ways. Young Savio Dagama, for instance, is a gifted musician able to play the guitar by placing it behind his back where he cannot see the strings! The young adults of Atmavishwas, Verna, Goa (a NGO for the differently abled) produce beautiful handicrafts such as mats, towels, cards, writing pads, paintings, bead work, necklaces and bags. The mentally challenged face enough of prejudice, sometimes from their own families, without others adding to this prejudice. —Monica Fernandes

Women as Cardinals? Answered by Legionary of Christ Father Edward McNamara, professor of liturgy and dean of theology at the Regina Apostolorum university. Q: I understand that technically anyone, even a woman, can be appointed a cardinal because a cardinal does not have to be a bishop or priest. Kindly enlighten. Secondly, the Holy Father is also the bishop of Rome. In Mumbai the cardinal is also called the "archbishop" and not bishop of Bombay. Why? R C A: I think we need to distinguish different questions. First, may a woman be appointed cardinal? Second, could women be involved in a papal election? Finally, what is the distinction between archdiocese and diocese? In response to the first question I would say that the answer is no. It is true that the cardinalate is a dignity and not a sacred order. It is also true, however, that from the very beginning of the office the cardinals have been associated with the clerical state. The cardinals are divided into three orders -- bishops, priests and deacons - even though almost all of them are actually bishops. This is because from a relatively early period the election of the bishop of Rome was restricted to the bishops of the dioceses surrounding the Diocese of Rome: Albano, SabinaPoggio Mirteto, Porto Santa Ruffina, Velletri-Segni, Frascati, Palestrina and Ostia, which is no longer a functioning diocese and is usually held by the dean of the College of Cardinals.

To these were added the most important priests of the Rome Diocese and the deacons who at that time were relatively few in number and often had the responsibility for its administration. This distribution is still reflected in the distribution of cardinals, of which there are six cardinal bishops, 160 cardinal priests and 39 cardinal deacons. As time went on the title was widely granted to bishops of other dioceses and those who worked within the Roman Curia. However, the connection with the clergy of Rome was always maintained by granting each cardinal a titular church of which he is, so to speak, honorary parish priest or deacon. It is true that the title was granted occasionally to those who were not ordained, but not, strictly speaking, to non-clerics. At that time a man canonically entered the clerical state (and the obligation of celibacy) by receiving first tonsure, and this was a minimum requirement for being named cardinal. Unfortunately, some of these behaved more like princes than as clerics and had little intention of proceeding toward ordination. Others, however, were notable. Pius VII's secretary of state Cardinal Ercole Consalvi (1757-1824) never progressed further than deacon and was already a cardinal a year when the Pope ordained him to this office. It is said that on his way to exile Napoleon Bonaparte remarked that Cardinal Consalvi, who was not a priest, was more of a priest than many who were. From the time of Pope St. John XXIII, all cardinals should be bishops, but the Pope may and often does grant an exemption to this requirement if requested by the person being named cardinal. In general this has only been granted to those priests nominated after they had passed their 80th year. Therefore, since the cardinalate is historically tied to the clerical state I would say that this is an impediment to women being named cardinal. This does not mean that women had no role whatsoever. Women were probably involved in some ways in the election of the bishop in ancient times when this election was done by the assembled faithful. This system produced the occasional St. Ambrose. But it could also provoke deep divisions and was more subject to manipulation by (Contd.. on p. 15)

Distortation Of Christianity Dispute Resolved KANPUR (27th Jan): About a week ago some Christian pastors under the banner of the Kanpur Pastors' Associaton (KPA) expressed their displeasure over some distortions of Christianity published in some school textbooks. The impression given was that some educational board had approved these books. They were the Class 6 and 8 workbooks of Singdha, published by Friends Publicaitons, Agra. This publisher's books are commonly used in many Christian Schools, but they are not officially approved by any Board. One of the offending texts referred to the nativity of Jesus as a story, and said that at the time of his birth an evergreen fir tree appeared in the sky, which is why Christians put up Christmas trees! Another text stated that in some circles it was believed that Jesus had come to India, and had then imbibed his teachings on forgiveness and compassion from ancient Hindu and Buddhist texts. To protest against the same the KPA, that consists of small independent churches, threatened to close all Christian schools in the city, and organize a protest march and even go to court, if the offending books were not withdrawn, and an apology tendered. Sensing things going out of hand, Sri K.V. Vincent, principal of the local Huddard School, and National Secretary of the Association for Schools of the Indian School Certificate, called the publisher, Sri Vineet Sahni, to Kanpur.

He also invited chhotebhai, President of the Kanpur Catholci Association, and former National President of the All India Catholci Union, to study the offending texts. Sri Sahni stated that the books and had not yet been published. Only sample copies were sent to some schools, for feedback. He claimed that he had consulted some authoritativae sources regarding these texts. However, now that he has been told that they were incorrect he was immediately withdrawing the same. He submitted a written unconditional apology cum assurance to Sri Vincent and chhotebhai. Accordingly the duo issued a press statement appealing to the pastors and the Christians of Kanpur to not stoke the fire any further, and to lay the matter to rest. —chhotebhai

Our Dear Cardinal Oswald Gracias Has Made A Statement

T

hank you Cardinal, the shep herd leads his flock from the front, and that is what we Catholics at The Archdioceses of Bombay, India, look at your example. Well ,I do appreciate your stand, and please be assured we the catholic and christian community at The Archdiocese of Bombay, and India are standing besides you. Yes I do recall, as a child when we were in school, we never ever separated or even thought of our dear friends as from a different community, we all lived as one big happy family, even today, my ole non christian friends wish me at Easter and Christmas and the reciprocal wishes are shared with them at their festive seasons. It takes a few misguided elements to cause misunderstanding among the peoples for their own personal, and or political gains and we the people must bring a stop to this. Take a survey of some leading political and or business tycoons, even many of our political sisters and brothers . Many of them have been educated in our Catholic/christian schools and they and we are proud of the same. Thank you once again for your stand on this issue and I for one look forward to you stand and your leading from the front on other many pending issues within our community which we have been discussion for a very very long time. —Gordon Jacobs

Disabilities And The Hand Of God Disabilities Rights Association of Goa [DRAG] was inaugurating a film festival on disability issues. A media report states that, at this function, the Goa C.M. ,Laxmikant Parsekar, said that people are born with disabilities because of a “mistake” and “negligence” of God. NGOs are rectifying the mistake committed by God. NGO work is more than that of God. I am wary of quoting media reports as invariably, when they become controversial, the originator comes out and says he was misquoted, misunderstood, misinterpreted. However, I am using it as it gives me a subject to write about. Though the C.M. is from Goa he has obviously not been to a Catholic school where you are taught that God is perfect and cannot make mistakes. How then does misery come into this world? Is an abortion the answer to a potential disability? There are two driving forces that determine our choices. Fear of the consequences of living with a disability. Or Love which sees it as a challenge, something which can be changed, corrected, coped with The Universe is made up of energy which cannot be destroyed. It can change its form —— light to heat, to sound and even to matter, substance and living things. God is a Creator not a manufacturer creating finished products. Once He set the ball in motion with the Big Bang, 14 billion years ago, He allowed the universe to evolve and change. The evolutionary process involves interactions. As energies, ideas and substances interact they evolve into new forms.God has put enough energy in the tiniest of atoms, which can light up a whole city. Each one of us has trillions of such atoms. Change is the one constant in the Universe. New

Francis Lobo Life ensures death and decay for which we all must be prepared. Even a new system, a new product has its Life Cycle. As Christians we believe that disabilities from birth are not punishment for the sins of the forefathers. No doubt not following the Laws of Nature can result in some disabilities which can be passed down. God could have made a perfect world, where there is no suffering. He didn’t. Instead He promised that we could experience perfect happiness in the next life if we choose to do His Will in this life. Life has the ability to choose what change to make. Unfortunately the choice can be for evil. Now here is the difficult part to understand. When we are tempted and sin, God shows restraint. — He allows us to sin. He allows wars, disease, disaster, He allows us to despoil the planet. He allows us to defy God. God made it easy to deny His existence. He doesn’t destroy the atheist. In the face of evil we pray to God but often it appears that He has not heard our cry. We expect God to obey our commands, to work miracles, to show His authority. He allows us to choose false gods if we so wish. Those in authority or who want to be in authoritypromise us that if we give them control over the resources that belong to all —labor, land, water, air forests, minerals, vegetation, technology — they can give us the Good Life. They can do for us what God is not doing — We must only believe in them. We have to worship the false gods of money and authority. With the flick of a finger God could throw them

from their thrones. But He doesn’t. He wants us to make the choice. After all how long will they be in power — 4, 40, 400 years? God has promised us Eternal Happiness Jesus taught us the perfect prayer, “The Our Father”. If God is our father, He knows what we need. He will not desert us, He will not try us beyond our abilities. He has also given us intelligence to find the solutions to the problems facing us. As one philosopher has said “If there is a God, and there is a problem, there must be a solution” Disabilities are not only challenges for the individual but for humanity to show compassion, to find solutions, to find ways to cope with the disabilities. God depends on humans to bring the Kingdom of God on earth. In a way NGOs are the Hands of God Co-operation, working together ,living in love and harmony, tackling problems together will enable us to see the Kingdom of God on Earth.

Problem Solving in a Co-operative Society SILIVILIZATION

Francis Lobo Being a compulsive writer I have to make up scenarios as I am not associated with the media and hence don’t have access to true stories. This story about an issue in a co-operative society is purely fictional and hence, any resemblance to real life is purely coincidental. The Mayfair Society bought land to build their Co-operative on. Unfortunately this land had pockets which had been leased out, which had to come to the society once the lease expired. However, as happens with all leases and tenancies, those staying on these premises refused to vacate when their lease was up. One area was occupied by Dr. Naushad – Hence, I shall call it the Naushad Case, which is now 30 years old, 30 years and more is quite normal in land and property matters. As happens in all co-operative societies there are some members, who ask awkward questions at A.G.Ms. — I was told that is what A.G.Ms. are for.One question which was asked at every AGM for the 30 years during which the society was struggling to get the place was the status of the case. The standard reply for 30 years

[Silivilization is about the silly and senseless things educated and people in responsible positions do when they live together in co-operative societies] was that it was “status quo” One committee tried to settle the matter out of court. They called an A.G.M. and decided to give about one third of the land to Naushad provided he surrendered the rest. The wily Doctor in the actual negotiations and demarcation managed to get more than what was decided at the A.G.M. In any case the society got some free land which they could sell. Knowledgeable members got into the act — The land has to be kept vacant as per the Corporation Rules, In any case where is the proof that the land belongs to us? The purchase deed provingownership was subsequently located.Has the lease with the doctor been cancelled? Where is the surrender deed? We must be very careful and check

out everything very carefully — You know how tricky these deals can be.Then there were commercial objections. Why sell the land now. Land prices are rising. The corporation has plans to increase the F.S.I. from 1 to 6. It is on the main highway, etc. etc. Now Naushad had a daughter and a son. So he wrote to the society that the agreement with him should be executed with his son. In the meantime the shrewd doctor made a will making the daughter the inheritor to the property. Members jumped in their chairs when they heard this. How could he? The will is invalid. The Doctor is in unsound mind and on his death bed. Now some members of the society favored the daughter, while some others were on the side of the son. Those who favored the daughter leased her a flat in the society, which was already leased to someone else, who had in the meantime sold it to a fourth party. Now it became a legal matter being fought in four different courts as our legal system is very complicated — Sister against brother, buyer versus seller, original allottee with the society and the society with everyone else. In the meantime the son produced a probated will wherein he was declared the rightful heir. On which bed did the father write this will since he was already on his death bed when the will in favor of his daughter was signed? Like the Fox Crime movies I leave it here for the reader to decide who finally got the property.

Palliums To Be Given To New Archbishops In Their Home Diocese, Not Rome

As a sign of “synodality” with local Churches, Pope Francis has decided that new metropolitan archbishops will officially be imposed with the pallium in their home diocese, rather than at the Vatican. “The meaning of this change is to put more emphasis on the relationship of the metropolitan archbishops — the newly nominated — with their local Church,” Monsignor Guido Marini, Papal Master of Ceremonies, told Vatican Radio on Thursday. By having the official imposition ceremony in the archbishop’s home diocese, more faithful and bishops in dioceses under the archbishop’s jurisdiction will be able to attend the event, “which is so meaningful to them,” he said. The pallium is a white wool vestment, adorned with six black silk crosses. Dating back to at least the fifth century, the wearing of the pallium by the Pope and metropolitan archbishops symbolizes authority as well as unity with the Holy See. Traditionally the pope bestows the stole to the new archbishops June 29 each year, which is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. The rite is a sign of communion with the See of Peter. It also serves as a symbol of the metropolitan archbishop’s jurisdiction in his own diocese as well as the other particular dioceses within his ecclesiastical province. The title of “metropolitan bishop” (Contd.. on p. 15)

(Contd.. from p. 7) political powers. The system was eventually abandoned. In some periods in which the power of the state had a strong hand in naming bishops, some queens, such as Isabella of Castile (1451-1504), had no small role in choosing the episcopate even though the appointment fell ultimately upon the pope. The election of the pope by the College of Cardinals is not of divine right; it has had relatively exclusive rights to papal elections since 1059. However, it is ultimately rooted in very ancient traditions of communion among neighboring churches that has gradually been adapted over time to reflect the present situation of the universal Church. However, hypothetically speaking, under a completely new system of electing a pope, it is possible that women could also be involved. Finally, it is not quite correct to say that the pope is also bishop of Rome. It is more correct to say that the bishop of Rome is, by that very fact, the pope. There could not be a pope

(Contd.. from p. 14) refers to the diocesan bishop or archbishop of a metropolis, namely, the primary city of an ecclesiastical province or regional capital. Monsignor Marini said moving the official ceremony of imposition to the local level doesn’t take anything away, but rather “keeps the whole meaning of the June 29 celebration, which underscores the relationship of communion and also of hierarchal communion between the Holy Father and the new archbishops.” At the same time, he noted, “this adds — with a significant gesture — this bond with the local Church.” In a January 12 letter to apostolic nuncios in countries where a new metropolitan archbishop is set to receive the traditional pallium this year, Monsignor Marini said that the decision “will greatly favor the participation of the local Church in an important moment of its life and history”. He also said that Pope Francis believes this new custom will advance “that journey of synodality in the Catholic Church which, from the beginning of his pontificate, he has constantly emphasized as particularly urgent and precious at this time in the history of the Church”. Pope Francis made the decision regarding the change in custom “after a long reflection and upon receiving advice which he had requested,” Marini noted in his letter. The pope, he explained, will bless the palliums during the June 29 Mass on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul in the Vatican as usual, but they will placed on the shoulders of new metropolitan archbishop “in his own diocese, by his representative, the Apostolic Nuncio”. Each of the new metropolitan archbishops are invited to concelebrate the June 29 Mass and blessing of the palliums in the Vatican, where they will then receive the stole “in a private manner, from the hands of the Holy Father”. Afterward, Monsignor Marini said that it will be up to the nuncios to decide on a day and time to “publicly and

who is not bishop of Rome, although there have been situations when he was not resident in the city. This unique status of the Diocese of Rome has meant that it is not formally an archdiocese. Without going into too much detail, let me say that an archdiocese is usually the most important and oldest diocese in an ecclesiastical province in which the other dioceses have been created from territory taken from the original diocese. The archbishop has certain duties rights and responsibilities toward the other dioceses of the province, although he does not have any real authority over them.

officially” invest the archbishop with the pallium “by mandate of the Holy Father”. Other bishops under the jurisdiction of the new metropolitan archbishops are expected to attend the ceremony for their new shepherd. The imposition ceremony is “enriched” by this new aspect of community at the local level, Monsignor Marini told Vatican Radio, saying that the dynamic of communion generated by the change is “very beautiful”.

The 10 Richest Religions in the World (Contd.. from last issue) 6. Episcopalian: The Episcopal Church traces its origins to the Church of England in the American colonies. It is the 14th largest denomination in the United States with almost two million members. The church split from Anglicanism as clergy of the Church of England are made to swear allegiance to the British monarch. Aside from the United States, it has dioceses in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe and Taiwan. Its members are considered to have attained the most wealth among all religious believers in the United States. 5. The Church of England: In a way, the Church of England is also a form of Protestantism. It was only formed because of the desire of the King of England, Henry VIII, to get a divorce from Catherine of Aragon. It was something that the Catholic Church would not give him. Also known as Anglicanism, it used to be the biggest landowner in Great Britain. It sold off most of the land to build up an investment portfolio of $6.7 billion that earns more than $255 million each year. It also gets more than $320 million in donations and $400 million through its events and services. 4. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints: The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is considered to be one of the fastest-growing and richest religions in the world. Its members are called Mormons and can be found everywhere, from Scandinavia to Japan. At the turn of the 21st century, Mormon assets were already being estimated to be at over $30 billion. It also has an annual revenue of $6 billion, with nearly 90 percent of the amount coming from member contributions called tithing, in which members are required to give 10 percent of their entire income. 3. Judaism: Those practicing Judaism are said to have accumulated the most wealth among all believers in religions

16

in the United States. This is not stereotype profiling, as Jews are known to be adept in the world of business. It actually came from a sociological research done in the country. Though Judaism is monotheist, it is not homogenous as it does have a lot of different views. The largest streams and movements are Rabbinic Judaism, Orthodox Judaism, Conservative Judaism and Reform Judaism. Aside from its homeland in Israel, its members also have enough economic clout in the United States to form a powerful lobby that can influence and sway the decisions of political leaders. 2. Islam: Islam is a monotheistic religion that is the second largest and one of the fastest growing in the world. While Muslims are found all over the world, most of them live in sub-Saharan Africa, Indonesia, South Asia and the Middle East. As a result, Muslims actually have control of the abundant oil found in the Middle East. Some of the richest countries in the world follow strict Islamic laws. Estimates in 2012 put the assets of the Islamic financial industry alone to be at nearly $1.6 trillion. 1. Roman Catholic Church: Catholic priests are expected to make a vow of poverty, so it is ironic that the church is actually the richest religion in the world. The Catholic Church owns some of the greatest art works ever made. It also has vast gold deposits and billions of dollars in assets. It also earns a significant amount of income from the tourism sector as the Vatican is considered an independent city-state. It also has more than a billion members around the world.

Advice from a CA: In ordinary course we keep issuing and submitting our KYC documents (identity and residential proofs..such as PAN card, electricity bill etc.) to various people. For housing or car or other loans, bank accounts,or even for buying new sim card we submit these documents. At almost all these places they ask for self certification on these documents. We immediately sign those documents and hand over. Just imagine your self certified copies are freely available in the hands of such persons & those documents can be used by him for EVERYTHING! Its really serious and its been seen that in most of the terrorist activities, KYC documents are sourced from the SIM card sellers. Hence, inculcate a habit of writing the date and purpose for which you are submitting the self certified KYC Documents so that those documents cannot be used again.

Table Manners For Kids

R

emember the fact that good table manners can help your kids come across as polite and mature people after they grow up. They will be respected and not hated anywhere. In fact, you must ensure that table manners for kids becomes a part of their upbringing. Only then, they will ensure that they eat well. Ways to teach table manners for kids ;

In starting stages... It is tough to teach table manners for toddlers. If the age of your kid is below 2 years, you can simply sit at the table for a few minutes as if to give your kid a clue about what you do while eating food. Ensure that you take your kid to the dining table for every meal. Also, teach your kid about using a napkin to wipe his face.

Forks and spoons At the age of 2 years, kids can also learn about using a spoon to eat food. You just need to be patient enough to teach about forks, spoons and napkins too.

Clean eating Once your kid is around 4 years, you will observe him or her eating food without much help. This is the time when kids learn how to eat without throwing the food everywhere on the table.

Closed mouth Teach your kid how to close mouth while chewing. A closed mouth can hide the ugly sight of food being chewed by teeth. This is an aspect of proper table manners.

Laughing loudly Most of the kids must be taught that talking or laughing while eating is not a good habit. Gradually, your kid will learn to eat silently.

9 February 2015

If children are not taught about table manners, they will start eating clumsily poring liquids all over the place and solids on the table. The mere sight may be repulsive and your kids might get disorganised. Also, in social situations, they will embarrass you. If you spend some time and pay attention, teaching table manners for kids is not so difficult. Using cutlery If using a spoon or a fork gets difficult, you can encourage your kid to find his own comfort zone while eating.

Drinking habits When it comes to drinking beverages, you can teach your children how to drink without smearing the contents around the mouth. When it comes to wiping the mouth, remind your kid that a napkin must be used instead of clothes that are worn.

Other aspects Apart from all these things, you can also teach other things like cleaning the table after the meal and giving

compliments to the person who cooked the meal. This helps your kid do well in social situations. This is how proper table manners can be taught to your children. To ensure good manners, get your older kids to start acting like grown-ups at the table by having them place their napkins on their laps, encouraging them to use their cutlery properly, and by teaching them not to dig in before everyone has been served. The other thing kids this age have in common is complaining about the meal they’re served. We suggest parents say okay and give them a set of rules. Either they'll try it once and decide mom's food tastes great or they end up loving to cook and clean.

Take Care Of Your Heart

L

ike any other muscle in the body, the heart requires pre ventive care. So, as February is known to be the month of 'Heart Awareness', let's talk about keeping our heart healthy through diet.

Tips for a Healthy Heart Eat healthy Stay active Lose weight Know your family history Manage your blood sugar

Heart disease is the biggest killer of women and men. But, it's also a preventable disease in many cases. With February designated as 'Heart Month', know the follds for reducing your risk of cardiovascular trouble.

Lower your Cholesterol Get your blood pressure under control

Avocados Avocados are loaded with heart-healthy fats that allow for the absorption of carotenoids. They have the powerful ability to lower bad cholesterol levels providing 3 grams of monounsaturated fat and 0.5 polyunsaturated grams fat per 1-oz. serving. Avocados remain as the only fruit that contains monounsaturated fat which aids in lowering LDL levels while raising HDL cholesterol levels. Avocados are both sodium and cholesterol free making them a great addition to any heart healthy diet.

Berries Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are wonderful for vascular health. They are loaded with antiinflammatories that reduce both heart disease and cancer risks.

Broccoli It has great levels of vitamin C, as well as dietary fiber and contains many nutrients with strong anti-cancer properties. It is rich in lutein and beta-carotene. Broccoli also contains a compound sulforaphane that has been known to increases enzymes to protect heart blood vessels while reducing molecules that damage them.

Spinach It is great for cardiovascular heath as well as cancer prevention and eye health. It contains super levels of betacarotene, and vitamin C, which work together preventing oxidized cholesterol build up in the blood vessel walls. Inspiration!

When You Can't Find The Answer

M

ost of us have experi enced something hap pening that makes us feel stuck, as if there’s no way out. Our world seems to spiral tighter and tighter. As a result, we feel small, restricted, with limited options available – and we can’t see a way out. We feel pressured to find an answer, but we’re only able to generate ideas that are limited and weak.

Inquire gently within. Again, you may feel a contraction in your body as a response. It stems from your mind labelling the circumstance as unchangeable, that it’s dire and you’re likely to suffer out of it. In other words, your mind does not believe that you can solve this problem. Now, there’s a part of you that is separate from the mind. You cannot access this part of you when your mind is very busy. This is the part that is beyond mind and its judgements, labelling and defensiveness. It is this part of you that you’re inquiring of.

Our tendency is to try to have more control, and usually we think it is to do more, within the small, tight hole we have dug ourselves into.

As you ask yourself the question while staying calm, you may feel a sort of ‘parting of curtains’ as you move through pockets of resistance before getting to a deeper place of truth: where you are connected to the Real You. This is the expanded version of you; he or she is way more capable, resourceful and has a higher perspective of what you’re dealing with.

When this happens, the best thing to do in that state is to release The Whole Thing and start from zero. Hear me out, there is power in zero.

Allow yourself to connect to your believability in the possibility of achieving the outcome you want. Let the sense of believability flow to your mind, infusing your mind with a new sense of possibility.

Returning to Infinite Possibilities The first step is to stop all attempts to control the situation. As challenging as it may be, making the decision to surrender it all, even for a brief moment, can give you much more leeway and bring in more resources than you can imagine. Once you surrender, it is important to ground yourself in this new space by acknowledging that you are now in a state of not-knowing. Acknowledge that you don’t know anything about what’s going to take place from hereon and you are trusting in an invisible power to take care of it. This space, which I call “the space of infinite possibilities”, is where all things are equal. Every scenario and option, imaginable or un-

9 February 2015

imaginable, is possible to create and manifest.

Connecting to a Deeper Truth From the space of infinite possibilities, ask yourself, “Can I do/achieve this?” This, referring to the outcome you want.

Opening Up to Unlimited Resources Next, ask yourself, “How can I do/ achieve this?” Again, inquire gently, with curiosity. Allow your mind to go freely to unexplored places, without censoring. Cast your net out in the open, into the vast unknown where outof-the-box ideas are found. Be open to any ideas, no matter how unpractical you may judge them to be. One of these ideas may be just the stepping stone to a perfect solution. Sometimes, a solution may not be apparent immediately. It may take some time for your mind to connect the dots. Thus, the more dots you reveal, even if they are useless on their own, the faster the connecting can happen. And soon, you are on your way out.
