How might the new annulment process affect the Synod on the Family?
B
y reforming the process for discovering the nullity of marriage on Tuesday, mere weeks before the beginning of October’s Synod on the Family, Pope Francis has taken that issue out of the hands of the synod fathers.
The decision could impact the Synod of Bishops, however, by reducing the perceived need for a quick solution to the issue of granting the divorced-andremarried access to Communion – since the reformed process may make it easier for many of them to verify the nullity of their first marriage. Pope Francis had in fact already shown his will to remove the discussion of declarations of nullity from the synod hall: his special commission to study a reform of the matrimonial process was announced Sept. 20, 2014, but had been established a month earlier, on Aug. 27, well before the beginning of October 2014 Synod on the Family. In any case, the issue was among those discussed at the synod, and Cardinal Francesco Coccopalmerio, president of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts and one of the members of the commission, addressed the issue in an Oct. 8, 2014 media briefing. He noted there that the commission’s aim was that of “drafting a proposal of reform of the process on marriage, trying to speed up the procedure, by streamlining it and at the same time safeguarding the principle of the indissolubility of marriage,” while distinguishing between a declaration of nullity and the dissolution of a marriage, clarifying that no marriage that is “ratum et consummatum” can be dissolved. As the upcoming synod will now not have to discuss the issue of declarations of nullity, it is possible that Pope Francis’ decision may also temper the push for a new praxis on admission to Communion for the divorced-and-remarried. At the same time, the motu proprios could alter the terms of the synod’s discussion, reported Catholic News Agency. (Contd.. on p. 4)

The Seven Deadly Sins - Pat VII
Greed
The discussion will probably be refocused on other issues, which could be helped by the new rules for the Synod of Bishops. A source involved in the Synod of Bishops told CNA Sept. 7 that there will be no midterm report, and each week will be dedicated to the discussion of one of the three parts of the synod’s working document. After a short general introduction, participants of the Synod will split into small linguistic groups, so that there are many small group discussions, but no general discussion among all of the synod fathers. The small groups will then bring their conclusions to the General Secretariat of the Synod and to the general relator, who would give a final report at the end of the synod, which will be concluded with a speech from the Pope. Meanwhile, the number of requests for declarations of nullity may increase. Msgr. Pio Pinto, dean of the Roman Rota and chairman of the commission, addressed this issue in the article he wrote Sept. 8 for L’Osservatore Romano: “Thus Francis, with this fundamental law gives a true start to his reform: putting the poor at the center, that is, the divorced-and-remarried, held or treated as far away, and asking of the bishops a true and proper metanoia. That is, a ‘conversion’, a change of mentality that convinces and undergirds them to follow the invitation of Christ, presented to them in their brother, the Bishop of Rome, to pass from the restricted number of a few thousand declarations of nullity to the huge number of unhappy people who might obtain the declaration of nullity – for the evident lack of faith … but who are left outside the existing system.” Courtesy: mattersindia

by Francis Lobo Greed is the driver to acquire the necessities of life and wealth. Therefore can it be said to be bad and a cardinal sin? In fact Greed is considered the driver in the materialistic world. Progress is achieved by everyone wanting "MORE" But, like all other instincts it must be controlled. The challenge is to determine what are the limits. We learned the hard way that there are limits to human consumption, limits to the resources available to satisfy our desires. Greed caters to the Animal Instincts in man. The Bible teaches that "the love of money" is the root of all evil. The word Love means that money has a prominent place in our thoughts and desires. When there is a choice what we love gets preference. We plan our activities around the person or thing we love. Our desire disregards logic and we are prepared to take risks. In this process we are prepared to ride roughshod over people and situations, hurt feelings, take shortcuts, tell untruths to get what we want. The answer to the "Love of Money" is to be "Poor in Spirit". This is not a call to be poor. This does not advocate poverty as a virtue. One can be at the highest position and the richest person in the world and still be poor in spirit. Mary held the highest position amongst human beings. She was exalted. She knew she was destined to be great for all eternity, yet she was humble attributing her greatness to God.
The poor in spirit are not attached to worldly things. They don't covert their neighbors wife or goods. They are not jealous that the neighbors' children are doing well and performing better than their own. Their focus is on excellence - Doing their best and trusting in God to do the rest. Unlike the greedy and the avaricious, they strive to be honest and just and not try to go ahead at the expense of others. This does not mean that they are content with mediocrity and non-performance. On the contrary they strive for perfection and productivity. But they accept the results as being the Will of God. Being poor in Spirit is making the choice of service before self and not looking at "What's in it for me".

Toddler Aylan, face of refugee crisis The haunting image of 3-year-old toddler Aylan Kurdi washed up on a beach in Turkey has riveted world attention on the human tragedy in Syria. The Syrian crises has its origin in the Arab Spring. The trigger was the arrest of some children who had written political graffiti against the govt of President Assad. The arrest snowballed into a revolution which has claimed the lives of 1,00,000 Syrians, forced 2 million to flee the country and internally displaced 5 million people in Syria. Leading the revolution is the Sunnimajority Syrian National Coalition opposition party, which is recognized by most western countries. The govt of President Assad is drawn mainly from the Shiite minority community in Syria. Christians constitute 8-10 percent of the population. Adding a new dimension to the crises is the ISIS which is trying to create space for itself in Syria . Christians are not involved in the conflict but have become soft targets as they are perceived to be sympathizers of the govt. They cannot even venture outside their homes or reservation camps for fear of being killed or raped. The international community must wake up to the horrific tragedy that is being played out in Syria. The Holy Father has urged 'every parish ,every religious community, every monastery, every sanctuary in Europe to take in one refugee family'. An Egyptian billionaire has offered to buy an Island in Greece or Italy to provide temporary or permanent shelter to refugees. While this is a good gesture on the part of the billionaire, the idea will take more than the effort of an individual to succeed. The European

Union (EU) must seriously consider buying islands in Greece (they are purchased randomly by celebrities). The EU and the international community must jointly take responsibility for these refugees until the problem is resolved or absorb them into their own countries in a phased and equitable manner. —Prof Robert Castellino Orlem Mumbai
Biggest ‘BridgeBuilder’ (On the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary).
After praying the Sunday midday Angelus on Sept. 06, 2015, Pope Francis spoke on the Sunday Gospel on Jesus’ healing of the deaf and dumb man (Mark 7:31-37). This incredible event shows how Jesus reestablishes the full communication of man with God and with other people. The miracle is set in the Decapolis, a pagan territory; and the mute man becomes a symbol of an unbeliever who completes a journey of faith. To create this intimate contact, the Second Person incarnates as the Word made Flesh. Yes! Jesus is the great ‘Bridge-Builder’ Who builds in Himself the great bridge of full communion with the Father. But this Gospel also speaks about us. Often we have drawn up and closed in on ourselves, creating many inaccessible and inhospitable islands among couples, families, groups, in parishes and in the country. This is our sin. In Baptism, precisely that gesture and Word of Jesus are present: “Ephphatha! Be Opened!” And the miracle is worked. We have been healed of the deafness of egotism and the muteness of being closed in on ourselves; and we have now been incorporated
into the great family of the Church. Let us implore the Blessed Virgin Mary, a woman of listening and of joyful testimony, that she sustains us in the commitment to profess our faith, and to communicate the marvels of Jesus, Who said “I AM the Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6). —Dr Trevor Colaso
' Modernise taxi services '
Taxis are a very important means of public transport which charges high fares but are not up to the mark as far as all aspects of their services so modernising them is absolutely essential. Taxis need to be spacious, well kept and disinfected daily and have large luggage booths besides being either air-conditioned or air cooled so that commuters can travel very comfortably. The driver must have a wire-fenced area in his taxi from where he can drive safely without any fear of being attacked by commuters and on his dashboard he must have his taxi meter and his RTO stamped and holographed photo ID card with his registration number and a consumer guidance telephone number and at the back of the front seat he should have newspapers and magazines which the commuter can read and a small suggestion box for suggestions and a recorded voice saying this is the Bombay taxi service and if you have any suggestions please drop your written suggestion into the suggestion box. All luggage fares and waiting charges must be painted on the outside surface of the right hand door of the taxi and if credit card payment is not permitted that too must be printed there and exact change must be returned to commuters. Taxis which do not want to ply must have a sign saying NOT PLYING on the roof of the taxi which is lit up when it is not plying and for the driver to find addresses where the commuter wishes to go to he must have a GPS system in his taxi. s a child growing up in cosmopolitan Mumbai, I was surrounded by people of all faith. There were Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians in our neighborhood. We would celebrate each other's festivals and none of us felt any different on account of religion. The beauty of India lies in the rich mosaic of cultures, languages and cuisines that coexist in our country, Not any more as we in India are presently experiencing a violent, volatile period seemingly devoid of rules. If you want to know how divided we are, just look at the matrimonial page of our newspaper!. India is running the software of tomorrow on the hardware of yesterday!. The only country where people fight to be termed ‘backward’! In India, you don’t cast your vote, you vote your caste!. An incredible country where actors are playing cricket, cricketers are playing politics, politicians are watching porn and porn stars are becoming actors!- vicious circle indeed!. Sarcasm is like electricity, half of India doesn’t get it!. Where liking a Facebook post and sending messages on WhatsApp gets you arrested, while raping does not! It has been over fifteen months now that the Christians in India voted Narendra Modi to power for Corruption Free Good Governance. Was it the mistake, to take his assurances at Face Value? …..His Silence over current happenings in the country, make us Believe so…….. Attacks against Christians have increased after this government; the proHindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came to power. The party is seen as the political wing of Hindu hardliners working to create a Hindu theocratic state. The law and order situation in the country has almost collapsed as government officials act (in a) biased manner against Christians and other minority communities, When a family cannot sit together and pray, you can

imagine the situation Anti-Christian harassment has become extremely worrying for Christians and the police on just a complaint from some right wing Hindu group accusing the Christians of attempt to convert through allurement under the stringent anti-corruption law pressurize official to register a case. According to this law it is a crime to convert without prior permission from government officials. Offering an inducement in order to convert a person from one religion to another is a criminal offense. Such attempts by the right wing Hindu groups occur
regularly and are a matter of serious worry for the Christians. It also causes great concern to the Christians that the police have not acted on any of their complaints nor arrested anyone for the attacks despite being provided evidence. Hence Christians cannot predict what will happen to them. The Christians of this country need assurance from the Government that they are protected from the communal elements that are targeting their places of worship, institutions and residences and that the Government ensures the Christians to be secure and safe in their motherland. Since these communal attacks on Christians happen at regular intervals, Christians of different denominations have started gathering in the national capital New Delhi to protest against the increasing violence and hate campaigns against the community across India. Recently Christians, including nuns and priests, from Delhi and the neighboring states of Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh took part in the Aug. 30 protest near parliament. Protesters demanded that the federal Government Issue instructions to state governments to obey the national policy of protecting religious and ethnic minorities from violence in view of the assurance given by the Prime Minister early this year where the Prime Minister Narendra Modi told a national seminar of Christians that his government will not tolerate violence against any religion. But ground realities have not changed. Christians are still being targeted in different states; there is great concern over the lack of action of the police and administration in bringing justice to the Christian community in different cases of persecution. The rape of two Catholic nuns this year has heightened apprehension in the Christian community. A report compiled by human rights activists in June claimed that the incidents of persecution of minority

kindness while the other is denigrated. And while it’s true that this teaching safeguards us from becoming self-centered, we neglect to see that to want to always be the giver has more than a touch of insecurity or arrogance, reflecting a sad lack of humility and graciousness. This is how the right wing Hindu groups, communal elements as well as the other communities see Christians and hence the need for Christians to change to a living with a rhythm of giving and receiving which keeps Christians and others balanced and whole.
communities in the country increased after the pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party government took over last year. The government has been accused by rights activists of trying to turn the country into a Hindu nation with the backing of the hard line Hindu-nationalist Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). According to the report, there were more than 200 cases of persecution against Christians, more than 170 against Muslims and more than 230 reported incidents of hate speech leveled against the two communities in the last year nationwide. According to partial list by the Evangelical Fellowship of India's Religious Liberty Commission, incidents of persecution against Christians this year have already crossed the 100 mark. Protesters noted that within the past week, at least five incidents have been reported in the states of Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. They expressed concern that Christians praying even in their own homes are no longer safe as they are being targeted by right-wing extremists apparently drunk on political power and support. But Christians as law abiding citizens will continue to uphold the law of the land.
people is required because they help ensure transparency and accountability in public affairs and governance; Journalists, minority communities and like-minded people are frequent targets of violence and are subject to intimidation, surveillance and threats from right wing Hindu groups. It is the journalist’s, minority communities and other like- minded people’s job to bring to light the things that those in power don't want the public to see. This means there are arrays of very powerful people who will do almost anything to shut the journalist, minority communities and like-minded people up. These people loathe with a passion.
Christian’s form 2.3 percent of India's 1.25 billion populations. However the continued silence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi is deafening and it is out here that the power of the Press plays an important role.
If journalists and the press want people to applaud what they do, then the advice is to join the circus. If journalists want to be decent, they should accept that it is not a path to popularity.
If the press doesn't shine a light on serious corruption, communal elements, who will? For democracy to function we require a free and fearless press. If the standards of politics and politicians are to improve then so does the standard of the media. For democracy to function it is essential that we have a free and fearless press. But that doesn't mean the members of the press will be liked for it.
The best way to ensure we have genuine freedom of the press, protection to the minorities and transparency in this country is for journalist to remember that they are the custodians of a great legacy. Journalist have a responsibility to look behind the spin, the press releases and the deals, so that the public can have faith that journalist do not look the other way.
Freedom of expression in the face of threats to journalists, minority communities in India and like-minded
21 September 2015
Just like the right wing Hindu groups are aware that - Some people will appreciate you, some will criticise you. In both the cases you are the beneficiary. One will motivate you, while the other will improve you. Life is a combination of adjustments and compromises. Adjust when someone wants to be with you AND Compromise when you want to be with someone and in a similar way the Christians too need to do the same in order to get the government and the Prime Minister Narendra Modi to fulfill his promises to the Christian community. We must show resolve in the face of such insecurity and injustices. It is those behind-the-scenes threats to journalists, minority communities and like-minded people that make you see how difficult the "fearless" aspect of journalist, minority communities and like-minded people can be. We pray for an India that has religious freedom and space for people of all faiths and ideology.
Christians all grew up being told that it’s more noble and blessed to give than to receive, so most of us elevate one act to a place of goodness and

The Girl Child And The Gujarat Model
S
ome years ago several newspapers across the country highlighted a report brought out by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN-DESA). The report contained data for 150 countries over forty years and had blatantly stated that “an Indian girl child aged 1 to 5 years is 75% more likely to die than an Indian boy, making this the worst gender differential in child mortality for any country in the world”. The above mentioned report was released sometime in 2012. That very year, in the month of May, Aamir Khan in his popular serial on social issues “Satyamev Jayate” focussed on female foeticide – of how the female unborn child was killed all across India. As part of this well-researched serial was the case study of Amisha Yagnik from Ahmedabad who had to undergo the nightmare of abortion after abortion when her husband and in-laws forcibly had her tested and did away with the foetus when it was found to be female. Ultimately, she had to escape to her maternal home a few years ago to give birth to her only child Kamya who is today eleven years old. Naturally, the story of Amisha created an uproar in the urban educated middle-class society of Gujarat. Several TV channels also blacked out the serial in Gujarat. However, the story of Amisha is not an exception but the hard and stark reality of what is happening to the girl child in Gujarat today. So when the Times of India (Ed. Ahmedabad) on July 25th, 2013 headlined ‘Guj cities killing infant girls!’ it was indeed not a shocker! That female foeticide is rampant all across Gujarat and particularly in urban areas is without doubt. Gujarat is a highly patriarchal society and this is clearly reflected in the social ethic which governs the State; that a girl child is not wanted and women are not treated equally with men is
8
by fr. cedric Prakash sj
just taken for granted. Women in Gujarat as a whole are condemned to a life of drudgery and there is a very small percentage of women who are professionals or who hold executive positions in the corporate sector. The Gujarat model of the girl child certainly does no credit to a Government which has been boasting of “development” all along. In India today, the child sex ratio for every 1000 boys is 914 girls; whereas in Gujarat it is just 890 girls to a 1000 boys with certain cities like Surat (831:1000) and Vadodara (865:1000) falling far below that mark. An important intervention would be to educate all sections of society on the fundamental value of gender equality. Inspite of campaigns by the Government and the NGOs to save the girl child, precious little would happen if there is no attitudinal change across all sections of society. Even the textbooks which are promoted by the Government reek of a patriarchal mind-set. Within the average family, more importance is given to the education of a boy rather than a girl. The tragedy is that several from across the board see no problem in this.
Today, during a visit to a school in the midst of the squalor and hostile environs of ‘Citizen Nagar’, several of the girls studying in the school were asked what they would like to be in life; pat came the responses: “Doctor”, “Teacher”, “Scientist”. If their dreams actually materialise, it would surely be great going - unfortunately the way things happen today is that most of them, if not all of them, would be married off at the age of 18 and even earlier. The Catholic Church in India observes September 8th as the ‘Girl Child Day’, in keeping with the birthday of Mary, the Mother of Jesus. A month later, on October 11th the UN will celebrate the “International Day of the Girl Child”. One surely needs to celebrate the girl child on both these days; however; unless there is a sincere political resolve and an attitudinal change in all sections of society with the sheer determination to treat the girl child as equal to a boy child, we would surely have a long, long way to go before we actually see any dramatic change in the status in the girl child in Gujarat and in the rest of India.

For A Better Life by Ninette D'Souza When asked what he wanted to be remembered for when his life was over, Leo Buscaglia replied, “I want to be remembered as someone who lived life fully and with passion. I’ve been asked to write my epitaph and I have always thought that the perfect one for my tombstone would be, ‘Here lies Leo who died living’”. Undoubtedly, being young is like riding on a carousel of emotions- problems, issues, insecurities et all. But this never deterred me from challenging life, for as a Canossian student, in the 12 years I spent at my Alma Mater, I had learnt the important lesson that, ‘to challenge is to live a fulfilling life. The Canossian pedagogy of education propounded by St. Magdalene of Canossa, foundress of the Institute (1808) helped me gain the insight that, there is no such thing as a life of smooth sailing, that I am actually doing myself a favour by taking on challenges; for these will only strengthen me, that difficulties will inadvertently enable me to have a big heart and become a person of depth and substance. Unbounded love and self-effacing humility, arethe ingredients that form the alchemy of success of the Canossian education system. It is one that believes in empowering persons to live their beliefs, to have the ability to live and have compassion for all those who touch their lives; without having to worry about the material gains and losses, to be able to create smiles amongst tears; and not get agitated about small setbacks; because life is meant for a bigger purpose then one’s own existence. In a world where values are fast diminishing, the charisma of St. Magdalene continues to mould and shape the lives of

countless young girls from all walks of life, like it did mine, through the hands of the Canossian Sisters, spread over the world in every continent. These religious women who are distinguished by their courage, faith and integrity stand out as a beacon of hope and light in a crumbling world. The Canossian charisma and I go a long way. By time I was ready to begin my formal education, my parents
had booked a home in a catholic society that was being developed in Mahim. My relatives who lived, in the area insisted that I be admitted to Canossa High School.50 years ago the Sisters of Mahim welcomed me when I entered the portals of the school as an ebullient 3 and a half year old. I remember travelling from Marine Lines accompanied by my aunt to attend the first 4 years at Canossa High School (Jr. K.G. - Std. 2). Thoughts of changing my school, or regrets for travelling so far, never crossed the minds of my parents, for they were convinced they had made the right choice… a school that would be responsible for the all-round growth of their daughter. The Sisters not only accepted and understood me as an individual; but also loved me for who I was; and not for what I could be in the years to come. Later after shifting to Marinagar, I finished my schooling from the portals of this distinguished school and today I am privileged to be a teacher at my Alma Mater. My School… in Sacred Heart Convent on M.M.C road, has already celebrated it’s Platinum Jubilee. The Sisters here are going strong too combining, the twin qualities of head and heart, that go a long way in empowering persons, who live in individualistic cultures; especially like the present times. Today I look upon teaching as a vocation, a divine calling to serve the children entrusted to my care. I realize it is an honour to be a co-worker with God in the task of moulding and shaping young minds and hearts as mine were, to make them secure in who they are – each one a masterpiece of (Contd.. on p. 10)

(Contd.. from p. 9) God. It is with in explicable sense of pride and joy that I pay this tribute to the Canossian Sisters where ever in the world they may be. For along with the Staff they have been instrumental in shaping me to be the person I am today. My school Canossa, helped me break through my limitations and realize incredible growth. I was encouraged to express my fears and doubts, to confront reality, to challenge everything that lay ahead of me; with wisdom and strength. I was able to develop a strong sense of responsibility, one that has allowed me to stand up to the fiercest of storms confidently proclaiming, “I’ll do it, just watch”. At no point of time did my school; Canossa, ever encourage comparisons of any kind, not with other schools and certainly not between students. We were motivated enough, to believe that we have to make a meaningful difference in the world, by being true to ourselves and being content with our own irreplaceable lives, to understand that we possess a treasure more powerful then fame or power. We were shown how to set our goals high, in a life brimming with possibilities. I never felt victimized as a student of Canossa High School; and I am a 100% sure every student till date will agree with this statement of mine. As a Canossian today I possess a power that is embedded in my personal sphere, which arises from a consistent ideology. I do not wear it overtly on my sleeve, but I let my walk match my talk. I grew up with a no nonsense attitude that combines a warm affectionate human being; so secure in herself that she is able to be encouraging towards others, is able to give people their space and freedom; to grow to their potential. As a woman of a bright present and an even brighter tomorrow, I combine dignity and courage. Canossa, has empowered me to face the worst of crises in my personal life, endure a lot from outside and come out stronger for that. PROUD TO BE A CANOSSIAN!!!

International Day Of Peace by Dr Trevor Colaso The International Day of Peace (not to be confused with World Peace Day which falls on Jan 1st), is observed annually on 21st September. It is dedicated to Global Peace, and specifically to such situations that necessitate a temporary ceasefire in a combat zone for humanitarian aid access. The Day was first celebrated in 1982; and is honored by many nations, and in conflict areas, by governments, political parties, military dictatorships, rebel groups and militant entities. I only hope this Day is commemorated on a regular and continuous basis throughout the year. To inaugurate this Day, the ‘UN Peace Bell’ is rung at its headquarters in New York City. Many Christian Churches also chime their bells. The UN Peace Bell is cast from coins donated by children from all continents, as a tearful reminder of the human cost of war. The inscription on the bell reads: “Long Live Absolute World Peace!” Themes and Activities: The theme for 2014 was ‘Absolute Right to Peace’! The theme for 2015 is: ‘Partnership For Peace: Dignity For All’! Various activities are conducted especially by youth. Youth leaders share their experiences on peace building efforts in their respective communities, in order to inspire other young people. For example, there will be a gathering of over 200 college students of the Southern Christian College enrolled in Peace Education classes in Quezon Avenue, Colabota, Philippines. On this Day, students will be encouraged to wear (non-uniform) clothes in the UN colors of blue and white. Schools are requested to observe a minute’s silence on Sept. 21. Other simple tasks are lighting candles, sitting in silent meditation, reflecting on relevant Bible passages on peace and harmony like the ‘Beatitudes’, donating to charities, or even performing ‘spiritual and corporal works of mercy’! One can share thoughts and pictures on social media.
Pope Francis’ Peace Message: 1. Be Instruments of Peace: In a Peace dispatch dated 29, 2015, for this year’s International Day of Peace meeting in Tirana, Albania, being organized by the Sant’Egideo Community, the Pope stressed: “Living together in peace in the spirit of St Francis of Assisi, prayer is always at the root of peace – to mould one into an ‘instrument of peace’! And precisely, because it has its foundation in God, peace is always possible. It is necessary to reaffirm this truth, especially today, where in some parts of the world, violence, persecutions and abuse of power against religious freedom seem to prevail, together with resignation in the face of conflicts. We must never be resigned to war; and we cannot remain indifferent in the face of those who suffer because of wars and violence. It is violence to erect walls and barriers to block those seeking a haven of peace. It is violence to push back those fleeing from inhuman conditions in the hope of a better future. It is violence to widen the gulf between one who wastes the superfluous and one who lacks what is necessary.” 2. Have Implicit Faith: Pope Francis insisted: “Still it is faith that makes us believe that peace is possible. It is faith that impels us to trust in God and not be resigned to the work of evil. As believers we are called to rediscover that universal vocation to peace deposited in our religious traditions; and to courageously exhibit it to our present and future generations. Peace is always possible because it expresses our faith that nothing is impossible for God.” Conclusion: ‘The Peace of Jesus’! Jesus offers us His “peace”, mercy and consolation: “My ‘peace’ I leave with you; My ‘peace’ I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid … I have said this to you, so that in Me you may have ‘peace’. In the world you face persecutions; but take courage, I have conquered the world” (John 14:27 … 16:33).

The New Archbishop Of Gandhinagar:
Most Rev. Thomas Macwan
M
ost Reverend Thomas Ignatius Macwan (the Bishop / Apostolic Administrator of Ahmedabad) is installed as the Archbishop of Gandhinagar on Saturday, 12th September on the St. Xavier’s School Grounds, Gandhinagar. His Excellency Most Rev. Dr. Salvatore Pennacchio (the Apostolic Nuncio-Pope Francis’ Ambassador – to India and Nepal) presided over the solemn installation ceremony. The event was followed by Holy Mass and a public felicitation programme. Several Bishops, Government Officials, dignitaries and citizens from all walks of life participated in this historic function. Bishop Thomas succeed Archbishop Stanislaus Fernandes as head of the Gandhinagar Archdiocese. Archbishop Stanislaus’ resignation, on reaching the age of 75, was earlier accepted by Pope Francis. An ‘Archbishop’ is a Bishop of higher rank or office and he normally heads an Archdiocese. In Gujarat, Gandhinagar is the only Archdiocese; there are three other dioceses: Ahmedabad, Baroda and Rajkot of the Catholic Church. Bishop Thomas Ignatius Macwan was born near Anand on October 14th 1952. He completed his schooling and university studies in Bhavnagar and later worked in the State Bank of Saurashtra from 1973 to 1981. He began his priestly training in 1982 and was ordained a priest for the Ahmedabad diocese in 1988. As a priest, he served in various capacities in Nadiad and Petlad and also went to Rome for a degree in spiritual studies. He was consecrated Bishop of the diocese of Ahmedabad on January 11th 2003. For the last 12 years as the head of the diocese, he has been a Pastor par excellence accompanying the faithful in their quest for deeper faith based on the person and

message of Jesus Christ. Bishop Thomas is a prominent member of the Quami Ekta Sammiti of Ahmedabad and is a staunch promoter of inter-faith dialogue who is convinced that all men and women of goodwill have to work together to help build God’s kingdom of justice, peace and love on this earth. He has been a regular participant at the prayer meetings held in Gandhi Ashram on January 30th and October 2nd every year. Besides, his many responsibilities as Bishop of Ahmedabad, he is also the
Chairman of CCBI Commission for catechetists and a member-Bishop of the Labour Commission of the CBCI. He is fluent in Gujarati, Hindi and English. The priorities for Rev. Macwan as Archbishop will include improving the lot of the girl child, lessening the gap between the rich and the poor, protecting the environment, ensuring that all citizens are freely able to preach, practice and preach one’s religion and inter-faith dialogue. Above all, he regards the Constitution of India as something paramount to be adhered by all for the good of all. The motto of Archbishop Thomas is "Called to Serve and Preach the Good News"! —Fr. Cedric Prakash sj

Family In The Context Of Media Revolution
T
he Daughters of St Paul and the Lay Pauline Cooperators, Bandra, Mumbai held a well attended symposium on ‘Family in the Context of Media Revolution’ on 30 August 2015. The panel of distinguished speakers included Fr (Dr) Stephen Fernandes, Professor of Moral theology at St Pius Seminary, Goregaon, Dr Jeanette Pinto, former Principal of Sophia College, and Mr Royston Braganza, CEO, Grameen Bank, with Scientist Dr Astrid Lobo Gajiwala, Head of the Tissue Bank, Tata Memorial Hospital, as Moderator
and the indefatigable and affable Mr Ladislaus D’Souza, senior journalist and Lay Pauline Cooperator as MC. Speaking on Effect of Media on the Family, Dr Pinto said that the family, the basic unit of society, was earlier characterized by strong bonds of mutual love, respect and trust, and acted as a sanctuary for its members. However, with the traditional joint family giving way to nuclear families, parents struggle to foster emotional bonding. Given the pervasive nature of electronic media, Dr Pinto lamented the

Speaking on Impact of Media on Public Morals, Fr Fernandes opined that the digital media facilitated our role as messengers of Jesus, giving us the opportunity break barriers and build bridges, apart from providing a public forum for debate. Social communities such as Facebook, equipped with a force

On the flip side, the attention span is fast decreasing due to excessive stimulation leading to Attention Deficit Disorder, lack of face-to-face communication, excessive exposure to violence desensitizing impressionable minds, induced sleep deficiency leading to tremors, nausea and substance abuse. The level of exposure to advertisements has three yearolds recognizing over a 100 different brands! Youth worship false gods (celebrities), their unrealistic expectations triggered by ads bringing in discontent. They lack moral discernment and lose out on sterling qualities such as compassion and love. and that “it’s we who should choose wisely,” Mr Royston Braganza, speaking on the Role of Media in the FaithFormation of the Family said that a car could either take us safely to our destination or, in the hands of a drunk driver, lead to death. He observed that we are so hooked to our mobiles that life is what happens for the short time our mobiles are charging! He spoke of ‘networked individualism’ whereby the deeper one is immersed in networks, the more isolated one gets. Faith, Mr Braganza pointed out, is a relationship of connectivity with God. In a world alien and hostile to faith, parents are the first heralds of God’s word to their children, amongst whom are fostered vocations to religious life. Parents should thus not expect religious to carry out that task. Faith formation should extend from the womb and to the tomb. The first five years being formative the child must be guided in the right direction. He spoke of how he sang Psalm 23 to his unborn daughter and how, after birth, she would be soothed when she heard him sing the same psalm. “Why should we blame the media for spreading wrong values when we do not take on the responsibility of guiding our children?” he asked. Displaying a website falsely claiming that Pope Francis said “Hell is not real”, Mr Braganza cautioned those present about websites where Satan is worshipped. “We have our heads in the sand for we refuse to acknowledge the evil influence of the digital media and do anything about it,” said Mr Braganza, pointing out that Pope Francis is very concerned about the

break-up of the family and the challenges it faces in spreading the Word. In the light of the forthcoming Rome synod on the family, Mr Braganza felt that it was the primary responsibility of parents to oversee the content of TV programmes, internet sites and printed literature, ensuring that their kids are not hooked on to any of these lest studies and activities such as sports, elocution and music go for a toss. We should pray to the Holy Spirit for help to discharge our parental duties. Quoting these catchy lines, “God has no phone, but I talk to Him. He has no facebook, but He is still my friend. He’s not on twitter, but I still follow him,” Mr Braganza said that God wants to add us on His Faithbook’ website. When the floor was thrown open by the Moderator for the panelists to field queries from the house, a couple of participants expressed appreciation for the informative nature of the event. In response to a suggestion that the Pauline Sisters should hold programmes in educational institutions, Sr Michelle, DSP [handling the video for the event], clarified that this was already being done. A participant informed the house that Our Lady of Health Parish, Sahar, had started awareness programmes. Responding to a request for names of good Catholic sites, Fr Fernandes suggested the Vatican (www.vatican.va) and the

(Contd.. from p. 5) The taxi driver can cut down the running cost of his vehicle by operating a hybrid taxi or even a solar powered taxi with a back-up battery to charge the solar battery when there is no sun and yet another option is the hydrogen hybrid taxi which is environmentally friendly. The on permits for new taxi drivers must be removed and if it is not removed a case must be filed against it because taxi driving is a self employment line and it is better for a person to earn his money legally rather than turning to crime to earn his money illegally. Where ever possible raised taxi stands with stainless steel railings and open on both sides must be constructed so that commuters can move in an orderly fashion to catch a taxi to their destination and the places where they can be constructed are outside railway stations and tourist spots. In residential and commercial buildings a painted white line with the words TAXI ENTRANCE AND EXIT POINT also painted in white capital block letters is essential to indicate

where taxies are allowed. All taxi drivers must undergo one month courses in ethics and etiquette and must pass stricter driving tests to ensure that they drive safely and not rashly. Radio taxi would be a boon to the commuter as he can contact them easily. Taxi drivers must not oppose private taxies because competition is necessary for good taxi services and one can and should imbibe all the good points of his competitor. Every year prizes must be given to the best taxi drivers and the best kept
taxies and honest taxi drivers who return things which the commuters have forgotten by contacting them personally for that service. The same suggestions can be used to improve autorickshaw services and the proposed motorcycle taxies. Hopefully then a modern taxi service will emerge which will be the pride and not scourge of the city which can be followed by many other taxi service operators throughout the length and breadth of the country and at least one of our third world traits can be shed once and for all. —Peter Castellino

The Church Is Sensitive, Not Fanatical
T
hey are worth a lot of attention although you would not know to look at it: the cases of nun-rapes, Christian churches torched, priests murdered and hate-mail directed to the faithful on the internet, is all a war zone. No doubt, the Church is also sensitive to what people say, claim or hypothesize about her teachings. But the Church is not fanatical, violent or aggressive. In life we are given tangible inducements which often sway towards corruption, injustice, hate and finally become the scourge of an innocent world. We, the lay people are sensitive as the spawns of Satan multiply with their ugly presence felt in countries far from the homes they leave behind, to infiltrate systems and societies alien to their kind.
By Melvyn Brown toxicated with material success, often brings about wrong news with regard to the Christian faith and its beliefs. Today we are at the melting point in our trust, belief and faith. Yet, we hold firm and fast to the values of our faith. At one time Hollywood director James Cameron, of Titanic fame, had ruffled church feathers by stating he had produced a documentary on having claims to finding the crypt of Jesus, Mary and Mary Magdalene.
Let us resolve to follow the teaching of St. Ignatius Loyola: to praise, to reverence, to serve God – and by this to arrive at eternal salvation. Religious men, in the words of Holy Scripture, live by the faith. “The life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” (Gal 2:20).
Professor Amos-Kloner, a Jerusalem archaeologist who oversaw work at the tomb in 1980 said, “It’s impossible. It’s nonsense.” Kloner (reported by Times News Network) said Jesus’ father was a humble carpenter who couldn’t afford a luxury crypt for his family. All names on the caskets were common Jewish names.
We have many reasons to turn to Jesus. We must ignore the false messages of men and women who pretend to “discover” loopholes in the faith and breath disgust, if not shame for their acts of phenomenal bluff. The fanatic is given an idea and blindly follows it without question or reason is something moronic, when given in anonymity, brainless. To be sensitive is to endure the pain, pardon the perpetrator, and to navigate the labyrinth of fear with prayer, compassion and forgiveness.
The hypothesis made about Mary Magdalene in the book ‘ The Da Vinci Code’ by Dan Brown was a poor work of fiction. It was soon blown away with the wind.
The crippling syndrome of a world in-

Men with black charismatic nightmares do cause much harm among the less-informed believers, their families and friends. Such men may reap a financial harvest from Satan’s spoils, but live long enough to pay his price. The Church is indeed sensitive to attacks on her teachings. Unlike those of fanatical belief who turn violent
even when the truth is spoken. Catholics pray always for the head of the serpent to be crushed under the feet of Our Lady. For the Church, much of this dark chapter is chronicled in Theology Therapy, comforted in prayer, worship, adoration and trust in the Lord who is a merciful Father. If Caesar is Shakespeare’s Roman emperor, then Jesus is the sensitive haven to heal and cope with a potentially rotten force of evil.

Sexual Harassment At Workplace Challenges and Issues
T
he Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act 2013 is the new law that has replaced the Vishaka Guidelines in dealing with cases of sexual harassment at the workplace. "Sexual harassment" includes any one or more of the following unwelcome acts or behaviour (whether directly or by implication) namely:- {i) physical contact and advances; or (ii) a demand or request for sexual favours; or (iii) making sexually coloured remarks; or (iv) showing pornography; or (v) any other unwelcome physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct of sexual nature. In simple words any unwelcome act or behaviour that is sexually coloured will be defined as sexual harassment. For example, a supervisor fires an employee because that employee will not go out with him or her. This is an Act to provide protection against sexual harassment of women at workplace and for the prevention and redressal of complaints of sexual harassment. This law is aimed at making work places safe for women. Women Employees face gender discrimination at the workplace and hence need better protection than the general policies that the organisations have in place. Most often women employees do not report cases of sexual harassment out of fear of stigma and the fear of losing a job or being not believed. Many private sector organisations do not have special policies on sexual harassment. While in some organisations policies may exist but strict adherence to the policy is rarely seen. Sexual harassment results in violation of the fundamental rights of a woman to equality under article 14 and 15 of the Constitution of lndia and her right to life and to live with dignity under arti-

by Adv. Aileen Marques Where the employer fails to constitute an Internal Committee or does anything in contravention to other provisions of this Act or any rules made thereunder, he shall be punishable with fine which may extend to fifty thousand rupees. The law also provides for punishment in cases of false complaints and false evidence. The Ministry for Women and child development has written to the corporate affairs Ministry asking it to notify the constitution of the Internal Complaints Committee as a mandatory disclosure under section 138 of the Companies Act. While a recent survey showed that 97% of the firms are not aware of the law on sexual harassment at the workplace, the government is set to crack a whip on the employers not adhering to the provisions of the new law.

Do Things the Hard Way:
Technology really has made our lives easier (after all, that's what Lifehacker's all about), but sometimes it's
Make Yourself Look And Be Smarter
W
hether you're trying to survive an intensive college schedule or just want to seem smarter in front of your friends, you can do a lot of things to both look and be smarter. Here are ten simple tricks for boosting your real (and perceived) brain power.
worth doing things the hard way. Doing things the hard way can help keep your brain sharp, so don't be afraid to forgo the easy stuff once in a while.
Know What Won't Make You Smarter:
There's a lot of work going into researching what makes us smarter— much of which we've mentioned here—but it's also important to know what won't make you smarter.
Read Faster and Better:
Just Believe You Can Be Smarter:
Obviously, one of the best ways to boost your intelligence is to read more! You can read faster (and thus consume more knowledge
Speak Up:
The more you can contribute to a conversation, a meeting, or other discourse, the smarter you'll come off. Even if it means admitting ignorance or asking questions, you'll still look better than if you stay silent—and you might actually learn something in the process.
Focus on What You Know:
When engaged in a heated discussion with your friends, you're bound to stumble upon a few holes in your knowledge. It's okay to admit when you don't know something, but if you're feeling particularly self-conscious and want to keep up the appearance of intelligence, the key is emphasizing what you do know.
Get Some Exercise:
A healthy body means a healthy brain. So, in between all the reading and mind-expanding, make sure you're leading a healthy physical life, too. That means eating right and getting regular exercise.
Talk to Yourself: 21 September 2015
While mumbling to oneself is often looked at the behavior of a crazy person, a recent study showed that talking out loud to yourself can help give you a temporary cognitive boost when trying to find something. The theory behind it: when you give yourself verbal labels to a task you're performing, you focus better on the task at hand at any given moment.
Learn a Second Language:
People who know a second or third language are often perceived as smart by others, but research shows that it can actually make you smarter, too. If you know a second language, you're able to adapt to and switch between certain mental tasks better than those that only know one, so if you want to give your brain a real boost, learning a new language.
Just believe you can be smarter. Studies have shown that this simple belief can actually make it true. That isn't to say you should be pompous: you need to assume you aren't that great yet, which will leave you open to learning new things and asking new questions—the exact sort of things that can make you smarter. But it'll never happen if you believe your intelligence is somehow fixed, so once that roadblock is gone, you may find you're much freer to pursue the level of intelligence you want.
Did You Know? When you boil cow’s milk with a few leaves of basil (thulasi) leaves, it will boost the immunity of the child and prevent the child from all kinds of diseases. If you chew a piece of ginger along with a few basil (thulasi) leaves and drink hot water, phlegm and boils in the nose due to phlegm will be healed. If you prepare a decoction of dry ginger powder and basil (thulasi) leaves and drink it, you will be rid of fever. If you drink a decoction made with basil (thulasi) leaves, ginger and honey for three days continuously, it will ward off fever completely. —Jubel D'Cruz, Dombivili

Chief Minister attends St. Mary's Feast in Bengaluru BENGALURU: Nestled between two historical places; a mosque and a temple, the century-old St. Mary’s Basilica (built 1882) about 2 miles from the Archbishops House, in Bengaluru, a Southern state in India saw over three thousand devotees, Sep 8th, 2015, according to Police estimates. Kaavi (saffron)-clad devotees of various religious backgrounds with flower petals, salt and pepper were seen devoutly hurling them at the gorgeously decorated hand-pushed chariot with the image of Mother Mary and the Infant Jesus in hand. The sacred-chariot chugged into the Basilica premises around 9.50pm (IST). Chief Minister of Karnataka State, Siddaramiah, in his message drew reference to "increasing drought in the State and perils farmers are facing in almost 27 districts". He urged devotees to pray fervently to Mother Mary
for a better monsoon. Home Minister KJ George and Minister Roshan Baig were also present for the flag-off of the Chariot. Archbishop Bernard Moras told the gathering "It is so inspiring to see so many of you come to the Basilica of our Mother year-after-year. May our faith in our Blessed Mother make us torchbearers of peace and goodwill wherever we are". The prelate spoke about respect for the girl-child and also urged devotees to pray for farmers in peril due to failing monsoons. The 160 feet high Basilica draws millions of people from various religious backgrounds from India and abroad throughout the year.

Unfailing Prayer to St. Anthony O holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for his creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore of you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. —Mrs M. V. S., Bandra
