An estimated 1.5 million people attended a Mass and liturgical procession for the International Eucharistic Congress in the Philippines on 29 Jan. The Mass was held on the grounds of the Cebu Provincial Capitol. Archbishop Martin said that the Church became present through the Eucharist. “There is no Church without the Eucharist. The Eucharist constructs the Church,” he said, according to CBCP News, adding that a Eucharistic community must always be a caring one.

Choking the cultural, environmental heritage of Goa by Bosco De Souza Eremita Panaji: The mysterious death of a firebrand former Blessed Sacrament priest, Bismarque Dias, whose body in November was found floating in a river of Goa state, is still fresh in the minds of local people. Dias had been waging a relentless battle to save the environment of this former Portuguese colony. Dias, like most other Goans, loved the palm-filled inlands, sandy beaches and struggled to preserve them. But he died in what is suspected to be a murder, and his funeral is still to take place pending a full investigation into his death, as demanded by his family. Dias was a thorn in the side of industrialists and tycoons who see Goa’s rich natural resources as a means to augment their fortune. Three months after his death, the larger picture is becoming clearer. On Jan. 16, the state's pro-Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government amended a state law to remove the coconut tree from the list of protected trees, claiming that under the existing law the felling of this tree needed government permission and that the process was too tedious. Goa's Environment Minister Rajendra Arlekar told media that classifying the coconut tree as a ‘tree’ was an error because botanically it is only a palm and not a tree. More bizarre, anti-environment sentiments were echoed in the state legislature, where Arlekar mentioned that too much green cover is a bad thing, while Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar said monkeys need to be classified as vermin because they destroy crops and fruits. Actually, the issues are larger than coconut trees, greenery or monkeys. Coconut trees stand everywhere in Goa and the law demanding permission to cut them down has become a bottleneck for industrialists waiting to buy land, clear it and start a business. There are several major projects proposed which face public opposition — a golf course, an airport, defense facilities, as well as bridges and road widening schemes.

The state has over 25,000 hectares of land covered by coconut plantations, yielding about 1.3 million coconuts every year, though unofficially the figure is much higher. The tree is an integral part of local people’s life and culture. Its parts are used for building traditional homes and the coconut is used for cooking oil and medicines. But the government's interests are beyond local concerns.

Elsewhere, village bodies have resolved to oppose projects that are approved by the Investment Promotion Board Act without their consent. The board purportedly aims at promoting investment and some 50,000 jobs, empowers the state to acquire any type of land, even forests. Worse, acquisition of land through this act cannot be challenged in any court of law. The government also amended the Town and Country Planning Act permitting “eco-tourism projects� within no development zones, where earlier no development, including eco-tourism projects, was permitted. There are cases where Goans were not able to build even residential houses on plots because of regulations and restrictions on constructions on slopes and in coastal zones. Affluent businessmen from outside the state, in cahoots with politicians and bureaucrats have managed to bypass laws to build gated palatial homes and hotels that leer at local people. Over the years, governments have had a notoriously poor record regarding the environment, where sustainability is not a vital ingredient, while approving projects. The projects underway in the state are bound to increase further an influx of outsiders, adversely affecting local culture. Goans are already feeling the heat of a burgeoning immigrant population, which is having a negative impact on the quality of life, with many Catholics preferring to move overseas. This suits the BJP fine. The influx helps dilute Goan (read Indo-Portuguese) culture, predominantly seen as Catholic, because the ultimate BJP objective is to obliterate all colonial vestiges, for the greater goal of moving towards a mono Hindu culture. The BJP has rejected the demand for special status for Goa in an effort to restrict the influx of people from other parts of India. This year being election year in the state, the BJP has bent over backwards to sanction projects at the cost of the environment and the people. In the process it chokes local interests and culture, giving freedom, power and wealth to outsiders to exploit locals, in a sure move towards its greater goal of a Hindu India. 'The First Valentine's Day Card by Peter Castellino Saint Valentine himself sent the first Valentine when enamored with his jailor's daughter he sent her a letter before his execution. The British Library in London holds the oldest surviving valentine language, a poem composed in 1477 by Margery Brews to her fickle fiance but several existing historic valentines are from European lovers in the Victorian period and were hand made and hand-printed monstrosities unlike mass-produced and slender greeting cards printed today. In the Middle Ages Valentine greetings lovers said or sang their Valentines and written Valentines appeared after 1400 and the oldest existing Valentine was made in the 1400s and is in the British Museum and Paper Valentines were exchanged in Europe in place of Valentine gifts and were very popular in England. In the early 1800s Valentine Day cards were assembled in factories and they were black and white pictures painted by factory workers. Fancy Valentines were made with real lace and ribbons and paper lace was introduced in the mid 1800s and by the end of the 1800s Valentine Day cards were entirely machine made. The European tradition of postmarking love letters in February travelled acroos the world due to the efforts of Esther Howland, a native of Worcester, Mass who graduated from Mount Holyoke Female Seminary in 1847 and in 1850 she was the first to publish and sell these cards in the United States. The Esther Howland Paper Lace Valentine was rare and very few of her cards exist today measures 2 3/4 by 3 3/4 and is blank inside and all her cards were stamped on the back with her trademark H. In the early 1900s a card company named Norcross was one of the first companies to manufacture Valentine Day cards. Esther Howland started the Valentine Day card industry in the United

51st IEC, Some Statistics
The week long 51st International Eucharistic Congress (IEC), from 24th Jan. to 31st Jan. 2016, saw the participation of faithful and clergy from across the globe. The IEC issued a final ‘vision’ statement: “Now is the time to relive the beautiful experience of the two disciples of Emmaus, when they encountered the Risen Lord in Sacred Scripture and in the Breaking of the Bread (Luke 24:13-35); not only as the “Bread of life” (John 6:25-59), but also as the ‘Bread of Hope’, ‘Bread for Poor’, ‘Bread of Dialogue’, and ‘Bread for Mission’! Enough is Enough !

here is no doubt that by and large, there is disillusionment in our country today. The promise of “Ache Din” by the present party in power, both at the centre and in the state of Maharashtra, remains a dream. Slowly and steadily, we have been seeing breakdown of system, continuing corruption, bribery, scams, intolerance, communal disharmony; taxes being increased on one pretext or the other with no tangible benefits for the common man. And we wonder whether we can do anything about it. Haven’t we had enough of this ? But we are unable to tell the government, ‘enough is enough’ ! In this dismal scenario, we can now only look up to the judiciary to do something. At this juncture, comes a newsreport (The Times of India dated 3.2.2016) which says, while ‘expressing serious concern over the ever-growing number of corruption cases, the Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court has called on citizens to raise voice against "this menace" and "refuse to pay taxes by launching a non-cooperation movement" if the government fails to control it. Looking For Branches And Missing The Fruits!

his February, the coconut trees that line the highways and spill out of the plantations and orchards of Goa will wear their bleeding hearts on their trunks as a sign of their doomed status! The people of Goa, helpless before an administration that chooses to ignore the danger of escalating climate change, as a result of large-scale slaughter of trees, have decided to embrace the trees as their valentines. But will it move those who make wealth their Valentine? In the winter session of the Goa state Assembly, the BJP-led government ensured the passage of The Goa Preservation of Trees (Amendment) Bill which relocated the coconut tree from Section 1 (a) to Section 12 (a) of the ‘The Goa, Daman and Diu Preservation of Trees Act’. The law came into effect immediately. It was reported that activists and Opposition parties alleged that the government effected the change in law because it is “only interested in facilitating big projects by massacring coconut trees in large numbers”. There were reactions from locals who consider the coconut palm synonymous of their beloved land. who is the government to classify the coconut tree as grass? ‘The Herald’ the newspaper which calls itself the voice of Goa, asked a pertinent question on its pages, “Who is the government to classify the coconut tree as grass?”, clearly reflecting the mood of the people. “With the government amending the Trees Act to renounce the ‘tree status’ for the coconut tree, it is now possible for industrialists and builders to assert their will on coconut plantations. With the tree now being given the status of a shrub, builders do not need to approach the forest department to cut them, thus increasing manifold the amount of land to build on. The coconut is vital to the lifestyle and culture of every Goan. Even the simplest fish curry is made with a coconut base. Hence, by getting rid of coconut trees in the state, Goan livelihood and culture will be compromised.” says the Herald in an interview conducted by Sujay Gupta. Therefore the question posed by the sons of the soil of Goa has raised the banner of revolt against the possibility of rampant corruption. Another voice reiterates this opinion. “On the one hand, the BJP wants to protect the cow saying it is a holy animal, but is giving a free licence to cut coconut trees, which is also holy and called a 'kalpvriksha' in Goa. By saying the coconut is not a tree, the government is making way for easy slaughter of coconut palms for real estate development," independent legislator from Fatorda, Vijai Sardesai, told IANS. “The coconut tree in tropical Goa is often referred to as the kalpvriksha, a mythical wish-fulfilling tree which finds

Down the Western Coast where coconut palm grows wildly, it is looked upon by the locals as a tree that gives every part of it to be used by humans. The palm and its fruit are extensively used for various purposes. No cooking is complete without the use of the coconut kernel. The dried copra yields precious coconut oil, used for cooking as well as for manufacturing products. Sap from the tender top is turned into toddy and vinegar. Coconut shells are used as ladles, while the husk becomes coir for fuel and to make ropes and stuff mattresses. The wood is turned into rafters for the roof and the fronds are used as thatching by the poor. Can this tree be a grass to those who look for branches and while missing the fruits? In Goa and elsewhere too, people treasure these trees so much that coconut trees are never cut unless absolutely necessary. It is not unusual to see houses and roofs constructed awkwardly or unevenly contoured to accommodate a palm tree! To oppose the government’s move of facilitating the destruction of these trees environmentalists in Goa are conducting the “ CHIPKO” movement, hugging the trees, this Valentine’s day…. However, the concerned party would have had to go to the Forest Department to get permission to fell trees. That became a huge stumbling block for big projects. This has been done to ensure that this stumbling block is removed. Ultimately, the head of that company went on record to Herald to actually stated that they can carry out their project without having to go to the Forest Department to cut coconut tries. His statement made reporters realise that this connect is very serious! Why is it a serious matter? Why should the citizens sit up and take note? Dr. Claude Alvares, a green campaigner of the ‘Goa Foundation’ that fights to conserve environment has this to say, “The coconut tree was the first victim. The second victim was proposed to be the cashew tree. Leading Hotels would like to cut down all cashew trees. That entire hillside is infested with them. The cashew tree falls within the definition of a tree and it is covered by the Trees Act. Once it is covered by the Act, you have problems. You can cut only this amount every year: one hectare per permission and you can be given only two permissions every year. The golf course would take around 15 years to construct. By the time you cut down all the trees, you’ll never be able to construct a golf course. The proposal went up to the highest rungs of the government to also exclude the cashew. You can i magine the sate of Goa if you exclude the coconut tree and cashew tree from the definition of tree. What else is left in Goa? From that the government will go further. It will go to the jackfruit tree and mango tree. Who has given this power to the government to declare what is a tree and what is not a tree? Are the Chief Minister and Environment Minister botanists first of all? Don’t they know that these species are mentioned as trees in all botany books? Do we mention the coconut tree as a coconut bush? Just because it is an elected government, it does not mean it can suddenly decide water is not water and the Western Ghats are

This nonsense has to stop and the people must object.” Yes, the citizens of this country need to wake up and object to Mother India being denuded, decimated, tarnished and turned into a barren land. The nature and environment are the rich resources that belong to the people of this land. Not only in Goa, but all over the country, (e.g. Uttarakhand floods a year ago) rampant destruction of nature is altering the lay of the land and causing climate change and other calamities. In the absence of opposition, with such politicians who cannot realise the importance of conserving nature, things will only get worse. Prajal Sakhardande, a Goan Historian says, “This government has crossed all limits. This is the last nail in their coffin. As Claude Alvares rightly said, who is the government to classify the coconut tree as grass? Just because they have been elected, they do not have the power to redefine every aspect of Goa. Do we have to alter our textbooks to suit these people? Are they educated people? This government is anti-environment, anti-people, anti-Goa. They have done this to please the builders.” When Meetings and seminars are being conducted all over by concerned environmentalists to spread awareness of the need to protect environment, have the elected representatives of the people formed a nexus with builders to work for their gains? Again, a pertinent question…

New Real Estate Bill:

r i m e Minister Narendra Modi's government recently approved changes to a Bill that seeks to regulate the country's property market, notorious for black money and delayed possessions. The Real Estate (Regulation and Development) Bill, 2013 is aimed to protect the interest of consumers from errant developers and ensure timely execution of projects. Here are 10 ways how the Bill will help property buyers: 1) Each state will get a real estate regulator, which will settle disputes and impose compensation. All housing and commercial projects will have to be compulsorily registered with the regulator so that buyers can have access to genuine projects. Ongoing projects that have not received completion certificates will also be covered. 2) Developers cannot advertise or launch projects without prior registration with the real estate authority.

3) Sale of property on the basis of super area (area in which a flat is spread plus common area such as lobby) will be prohibited. Developers will have to advertise carpet area, which is the area enclosed within the walls of a flat, for sale. 4) Developers will have to disclose layout plans and submit clearances with the regulator. They will also have to name the contractor, architect, structural engineer, etc. associated with the project. This will ensure transparency about property projects.
5) To ensure projects are completed on time, promoters will have to deposit 50 per cent of the amounts realized from buyers in a separate bank account within 15 days. 6) Developers will need the consent of two-third buyers to alter plans, structural designs and specifications of the building. They will have the responsibility to rectify structural defects and refund money in cases of default. 7) Brokers, who intend to sell flats and plots in a project, will also have to get registered with the real estate regulator. They will be punished for non-compliance. 8) Buyers can claim refund with interest and compensation if promoters fail to deliver projects in time. 9) If rules are violated, projects will be de-registered and penalties will be imposed on the developer. Noncompliance will attract fine up to 10 per cent of project cost. Misinformation will attract fine of 5 per cent of project cost. 10) Builders often demand part payment in cash, making many ordinary buyers party to corruption. The Bill will help curb undeclared "black money" in property markets that costs the government billions of rupees in lost taxable income.

he word “antichrist” means in opposition to Christ. So this diabolic evil power is opposed to or putting itself in place of Christ meaning attempting to counterfeit or to be a manufactured false representation. Antichrist is a Christian term based on interpretation of passages in the New Testament in which the term “antichrist” occurs 5 times in 1Jn & 2, Jn in plural terms and 4 times in the singular. In 1 John 2:18 the term implies a particular man who, before the Second Coming Christ, will persecute the Church with a ferocity never before experienced. 1 John 2:22 tells us that anyone who opposes the Father is an antichrist. In 1John 4:3 says, "Every spirit that does not acknowledge Jesus does not belong to God. This is the spirit of the antichrist that, as you have heard, is to come, but in fact is already in the world". Since Jesus and St. Paul ominously warns us in the scriptures (Math24:25) (2Thes2:3-4) “ahead of time”, should this not be an urgent message the church needs to hear! Are we spiritually preparing our mind, soul and heart to over comers for what for what may soon come to pass? Who or what is the Antichrist? In order to understand the Antichrist one should know who is Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God, and have knowledge of the Scriptures. Like Jesus Christ, Antichrist will be brought up in obscurity; he will lead a hidden life until the time comes when he will begin his public career. This assertion is founded on the words of Daniel (11:21). “Antichrist will be born of Hebrew parents, He will come from the tribe of Dan as Samson, Judas Iscariot. His mother will be a harlot possessed by the devil. Antichrist, the son of perdition will be born in Corozain, and will be brought up in Bethsaida and according to what Jesus said in the Gospel: "Woe to thee Corozain ... woe

He is a real person with fullness of evil, who will appear on the world scene at the end of the times and will sit upon the throne on the Temple Mount in (Jerusalem). The Antichrist is the antithesis of everything that Christ is. Satan aims to replace God in these last days by deceiving people into following Antichrist, who appears spiritual and holy. The prophecies of Daniel and Revelation exposes Satan's traps and strategies and lead people to anchor in Jesus and His Word for safety. The Antichrist is the fullness of evil, falsehood, hate and pride. He will reject the humble, glorify sinners and teach vices contrary to Christian virtues. However, there is only one entity that specifically fulfills all the prophesied characteristics of the Antichrist. In Daniel chapters 7 and 8 and in Revelation chapter 13, you will find at least 10 identifying traits of the Antichrist. The most solemn curse in all of Scripture is pronounced upon those who worship the “beast” and his image and receive his mark, of the beast, on the right hand and forehead without which one cannot buy or sell. AntiChrist, will mesmerize and shake the world with his evil presence, Antichrist will not be the incarnation of Lucifer, he will be the on the negative side of Christ, he will be in league with Lucifer, and will seduce the world leaders and institutions, to rebel against God and will proclaim himself to be God; he will be a Jew and lead Israel to accept him as the Messiah. His rule over the whole world will be for a short period of 3.5 years. Those who accept him will bear his mark, or sign. One-third of the conquered peoples will refuse

In the book of Daniel, Nebuchadnezzar, the king, made an image of gold whose height was 60 cubits, don’t bother translating them into our measurements, you need to use the Bible measurements, the numbers mean something; “60 cubits high, 6 cubits wide, and the last 6 is the musical instruments under his feet” And in Hebrew if it doesn’t give the depth it would be because it’s the same as the width. You can look at that in the building of the sanctuary, even the ark, a lot of parallel dimensions there, which means it would be 60 by 6 by 6. Now is that starting to ring true when you get to Revelation 13 and they’re told to worship or be killed? In Hebrew 666 mean (Vav Vav Vav) The Koran mentions that 666 is the distance between the Kaaba (Mecca) in Saudi Arabia, to the dome of the rock on the Temple mount (Jerusalem). The other translation of 666 means numbers 1 to 36 represented the 36 constellations which were also gods and the sum total of all the numbers adds to 666 (Babylonian Sun Seal square). The seat of satan is in Turkey (Pergamum) Rev.2:13. THE TWO WITNESSES The Gospels of Mathew (17:1-8), Mark(9:2-8) and Luke(9:28-36) mentions that at the transfiguration Jesus took with Him the apostles Peter, James and John and led them to a high mountain where they could be alone. What one reads between the covers of SHEPHERDING GOD’S PEOPLE is an updated version of Bishop Thomas Dabre’s thoughts and reflections, talks and experiences published in various periodicals during his 45 year-long pastoral ministry. As bishop for the past 26 years, his ministrations have benefitted three dioceses in particular viz., Bombay, Vasai and Poona. As such, this is Bishop Dabre’s Silver Jubilee keepsake brought to you by ST PAUL’S! The teachings of the Church are essentially based on both Sacred Scripture and Tradition. Accordingly, the text covers a gamut of topics associated with the Catholic Faith, each touching the reader to the core of one’s being. Challenging in terms of understanding the Faith of our Fathers, it makes the reader literally want to read the Holy Bible on one hand and, on the other, study the numerous Papal Encyclicals that have served to strengthen the Church’s own grasp on the world and its myriad contradictions. Indeed, a cursory glance at the subjects—46 to be precise!—listed in the ‘contents’ can be an eye opener in terms of what to expect in the text: service, discipleship, liturgy, Mary, the family, education, youth, children, commitment, migrants and so on. Bishop Dabre brings to bear on the book’s contents his multifaceted experience that includes his first encounter with Pope Saint John Paul II during his first visit to India, his involvement in inculturation and interfaith dialogue as professor of Theology and chairman of the National Catechetical and Liturgical Centre of the CBCI and so much else. This 207 page book (Rs 200 only) is all the more desirable given the fact that Bishop Dabre’s penchant for interacting with people of all faiths as well as no faith, apart from his own flock, has earned him the sobriquet “The Listening Bishop”! Media savvy and extremely articulate, he’s a bishop with an ear to the ground and a hand on the pulse of his flock, truly the “pastor with the smell of sheep” that Pope Francis so ardently desires his bishops and priests to be.

Moses and Elijah will expose every devilish trickery of the Antichrist to the Jews. During the Jewish festival the Passover, Revelation 11.says the Beast (Antichrist) will kill these two witnesses and leave their dead bodies on the street of Jerusalem exposed. The present world which is under the shadow of Satan will rejoice and celebrate their deaths, but after 3.5 days they will be resurrected and ascend to heaven.(Rev 11:11-12-15) for after 3 days according to the Jewish culture the Spirit of the dead leaves the body. Israel having now received the Gospel of Christ will give glory to “Yeshua Hamashiach” (Hebrew for “Jesus the Messiah). The Archangel Gabriel with a loud shout will blow the trumpet, before the Son of God appears on the clouds surrounded by legions of angels shining in glory, He will be riding on a white horse wearing the crown of royalty and authority. He will land on the Mount Ascension and will pass through the mount of Olives and through the Kedron Valley enters thru the Eastern Gate (Golden Gate), which is presently sealed off by the Muslims and the grounds outside the entrance of the Gate converted into a burial ground saying that the Messiah will not pass through the graves to enter the Temple Mount. The first time He entered thru this gate was on Palm Sunday riding a colt and the crowds shouting Hosanna! Finally He will put to death the Antichrist, and all his followers by His Breath (Holy Spirit). This will herald the end of time and the beginning of the general judgment. A decent level of emotional intelligence is needed for everyone so they can get along well with people. Emotional intelligence can get you into a lot of awkward situations in life. Emotional intelligence is all about knowing and anticipating others behaviors and also knowing the right way to respond or behave. It is within you and also stimulated by other people at times. Here are some signs that you are emotionally intelligent. You do not let yourself get hurt by other people: A good sign that you are emotionally intelligent is when you do not let others easily affect you or hurt you. You are emotionally stable and to intelligent to know that others hurt you for their own purposes and that you should not be wasting time thinking about them. You can easily figure out what’s wrong with you: Being emotionally intelligent does not mean that you would not get into trouble but you will be intelligent enough to figure out what got you into trouble in the first place. Suicides And Address The Real Problem? by Natasha Narwal
“D
id clinical depression kill Rohith Vemula or did a cultural cartel? There are reasons why ‘both’ does not make for a robust answer,” writes Manu Joseph in a recent article in Hindustan Times. According to him, it can’t be both and he argues that those who insist that he was pushed to suicide by the blatant and sickening caste discrimination in the University are denying him the right to his personhood, the right to be ‘clinically depressed’. “Is a Dalit activist allowed to be ‘clinically depressed’,” he asks. The underlying assumptions of his argument are imagining one’s inner and outer worlds as water tight compartments and seeing clinical depression as a disease stemming from somewhere within the socalled inner world of a person’s mind. Is a ‘clinically depressed’ person allowed to be oppressed, one may ask Mr. Joseph. But he is not alone in his arguments and assumptions. The same logic was applied when 22-year-old medical student Jaspreet Singh in AIIMS, who was routinely failed in exams by one professor, committed suicide in January 2008. College authorities tried to put his suicide down to depression despite Singh explicitly mentioning said professor’s name in his suicide note. Manish Kumar Guddolian, a 20-year-old Dalit student at IIT Roorkee, jumped to his death from the fifth floor of his hostel in 2011. The police again put the cause of death down to depression, but his family members had another story to tell of the many months of bullying he faced in college from a group of students who tried to put him down by calling him names like ‘chamar’ and circulating a video of his photos to be laughed at. In all these cases, depression is cited as the ’cause’ of suicide in order to absolve everything else and shift the blame on a person’s individual psyche. The point is

not to deny the existence of depression and its linkages to suicides (which cannot be captured by a simple cause and effect relationship), but rather to understand its very existence where it is not located only as an illness in someone’s individual psyche and ‘personal problems’. Though the equation of depression with a disease or an illness seems to give some relief to the people going through it as they can be relieved of the burden and stigma of being ‘weak-willed’ or ‘not being strong enough’ to be suffering and disintegrating thus. But ultimately it locates the problem within the person which one gets one fine day and which can be diagnosed and ‘treated’ and then one can be successfully reintegrated into ‘normal’ society. Depression does not emerge in a vacuum but from the very pressures and travails of the ‘normal’ society with its codes of normative behaviours and expectations and life conditions. Higher education institutions today have become hubs of depression and suicides are only a very small and extreme manifestation of it. Though there aren’t any statistics available for Indian Universities yet, during the journey to an M.phil degree, what I have seen in my time at university is an epidemic of students struggling with what are called ‘mental health’ difficulties, every third person slyly looking for ‘help’ (counselling/ medication) filled with guilt, shame and a sense of personal failure. To understand this epidemic of depression among students, we need to look at and question the conditions of education in our higher education institutions. The constant pressures of scoring well, meeting deadlines, increasing workload, ideas of excellence, competition, alienation, lack of space to share or even understand the stresses and despair generated from such pressures are making students walking bundles of nervous wreck ready to break down at any moment. Add to these the rising fee, cutting of scholarships, pressures of funding one’s education (student loans), precarious futures (all part of the neo-liberal reorganisation of Universities)
and you will get the recipe for a nervous breakdown. One can only imagine the emotional condition of students belonging to various marginalised and under-privileged backgrounds facing discrimination at so many levels in our Universities. Now, there will be people who would say that these are very mundane problems of life and one’s got to deal with them. So thought the girl in my class who could not cope with the pressure of writing so many assignments, missed a few, started keeping ill most of the time, gradually stopped attending classes, had a nervous breakdown and left her education as the doctor deemed her ‘unfit’ for continuing. So thought a friend whose assignments were repeatedly given back to him because they were not within the prescribed word limits until he could not write any more, could not bear to go to classes out of shame, started failing exams, gave endless repeats and became suicidal. There will also be people who would say that if these conditions in the Universities are responsible for pushing people into depression then why do some people suffer from depression and others don’t. Of course, depression is a very complex phenomenon and cannot be reduced to only a few causes. Its sources are multiple, layered, difficult to discern, but there are sources nonetheless located in our lives and its conditions. Succumbing to depression, or not, also depends on one’s coping mechanisms but they are also not created in a vacuum and are products and markers of the kind of support system one has, the kind of life one has led which very much depend on the socio-cultural and economic condition of one’s self and family. It is high time that we stopped locating depression in personal failures or alternatively pathologising and seeing it as disease to be cured in a person’s psyche only. It is high time that we created space for even bringing out and discussing these emotions and traumas and understanding their linkages with conditions in higher education institutions (though of course, they are not confined to it). It is high time we saw Depression as a political story.
