Paravur : A blaze sparked by exploding fireworks killed scores of people at a Hindu temple in Kerala. Responding to the event, Card Oswald Gracias, archbishop of Mumbai and president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops of India (CCBI), expressed deep "pain and sorrow for the tragic loss of life. “The Catholic Church in India will extend all medical assistance to the more than 350 people injured,” he told.
Condolence from Archbishop of Bangalore
The Archdiocese of Bangalore together with all the Bishops of Karnataka and the Karnataka United Christian Forum for Human Rights is shocked to hear about the sad and tragic incident that took place in Paravoor, Kollam, Kerala, in the wee hours of Sunday, killing more than 130 people and injuring severely around 350-400 devotees. We assure all the families of the departed our prayers for strength from God to bear their loss and a quick recovery for those injured in the hospitals. People at the sacred place had come to worship the Divine. May the Divine, provide the State, temple authorities and others, blessings so that at this moment they may feel God’s presence and take all necessary safety measures to avoid such tragedies in the future. We pray God to bless all the families who have lost their near and dear ones and we share the pain of all those injured, some of them seriously. May the Lord grant peace to all departed persons and give to all those injured his loving care.
Kerala church leaders support total ban on liquor Thiruvananthapuram: With the ruling Congress-led UDF and opposition LDF sparring over liquor policy ahead of the May 16 Assembly polls in Kerala, spokesperson of the the powerful Syro Malabar Catholic Church yesterday said it was in favour of total prohibition. The church stand comes as a shot in the arm for the UDF government of Oommen Chandy which is in favour of a liquor ban. The Chandy government had in 2014 closed down about 700 odd bars as part of its liquor policy that envisages total prohibition in the next 10 years. Presently, liquor can be served only in five star hotels. Taking a different stand on the issue, CPI (M) has said that total prohibition was 'impractical' and if LDF was voted to power, it would try to reduce consumption of liquor through absti-
2
nence. They would also hold awareness campaigns to achieve their goal in cooperation with anti-liquor outfits. Father Jimmy Poochakkatt, Syro Malabar Catholic Church’s official spokesperson, told that they "always favour a total ban. That should be so. The step taken by UDF government in this regard is welcome". Taking into consideration the polices of the two Fronts on liquor, the church feels that UDF policy "is more favourable" and "welcoming", he said, however, adding this does not mean that they were politically supporting UDF. "We are not for politics. We are not for UDF or LDF. But considering the policies of the two fronts on liquor, the policy of UDF is more favourable and so we welcome it," he said. On the abstinence theory of the LDF, he said the church is of the view it would not be "practicable in the state".
He said a priest from a parish had told him that after restriction on liquor sale was imposed, many problems due to its consumption had decreased in the area. Chief Minister Oommen Chandy had slammed the CPI(M)'s liquor abstinence policy on April 6 and said the Marxist party's aim was to do away with his government’s liquor policy. CPI(M) politburo member Pinarayi Vijayan had earlier said LDF would hold a campaign in the state with anti-liquor outfits on ill-effects of liquor and that CPI(M) was not a party that encourages liquor. Party state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the CPI(M) was against total prohibition. KPCC President V M Sudheeran had hit out at Vijayan, saying it shows the alleged nexus between the liquor lobby and CPI (M) leaders. (ucan)

Observing the Indian startup story,
Where Is India’s Google et al?
Google, Amazon etc were born out of the first internet wave in the US during the 90s. A decade or so later, China built its own Google named Baidu, and practically drove Google out, which otherwise, has a global search engine market share of roughly 80%. Further, the rise of Alibaba displaced Amazon. Circa 2015, if India has indeed become the third largest startup ecosystem, then where is India’s Google? Facebook? Or Twitter? Or such meta-level startups. What’s wrong then? With due respect to the Indian innovators, IMHO (in my humble opinion), most Indian startups aim to be rent-seekers and not wealth creators in the true sense. They are not interested in the bigger picture, in solving genuine problems, creating new categories or trying to become leaders in the existing ones. Without generalizing, most Indian startups by and large look to copy an existing model, and fine tune it to serve the local need. There’s Ola for Uber, Gaana for Spotify, the N number of food delivery startups, and their extended versions delivering just about anything under the sun. InMobi is the only Indian startup, which carved out a niche for itself.

Ever since Mark Zuckerberg created the behemoth that is Facebook, every 22year-old graduating kid wants to become a CEO. The little things called experience and expertise be damned. And sugar-coated, half-told success stories floating on the Internet haven’t helped either. What these young graduates often forget is that people like Steve Jobs, Jeff Bezos or the latest poster boy Elon Musk slogged for years, writing codes in anonymity, sharpening their skills to the point of perfection before jumping onto their grand idea. To put things in perspective, Elon Musk took many years to selflearn the nuts and bolts of rocket science and electric automobiles, literally. But all we want to see is the end product — SpaceX and Tesla. This is where the latest breed of Indian founders falter. They do not want to wait. They have been overfed the idea that an ‘IDEA’ is all you need and you need to move fast, unless someone else beats you. Misinterpreting the overnight suc(Contd.. on p. 4)

(Contd.. from p. 3) cess of new-age startups like Pinterest, Instagram etc, they do not want to invest in honing their skills or gaining perspective about the sectors they wish to dive in. The immediate tag of a CEO, CTO, COO (CXO) is way too enticing to let them go through the grind. They should ask themselves — where is innovation in selling baby diapers online? Or loaning bean bags on rent for parties? Or delivering food from the local chicken-shawarma joint? Creating the most attractive and seamless website/app and hooking up with a local delivery service, while piggy-banking on investor money is NOT innovation. It is not sustainable and definitely not long term. It might be better to call it a normal business instead.
Forcing Western Models In Indian Markets
Indian market for online grocery shopping gets restricted to the young and working population in urban centres, who are anyhow increasingly eating in office or outside. Startups in India trying to fit a western model into Indian markets without fully working out the ground level movements. That’s why they hit a roadblock when it comes to scaling.
The Talent, Or The Lack Of It
The Indian startup ecosystem faces somewhat similar problems in its limited domain. Indian startups someday working on truly cutting-edge technologies in areas like defense, space, automobiles and opening new vistas, not just for India, but the entire world.

Urbi et Orbi – Hope and Life!
P
ope Francis delivered his traditional Urbi et Orbi – City and World, blessing on Easter Sunday, 27 March 2016. Its message of “Hope and Life” is universal, for all occasions. (Brief extracts): “O give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love (mercy) endures forever” (Psalm 135:1). Yes, Jesus Christ, the Incarnation of God’s Mercy, Who out of love for us died on the Cross; and out of love for us Resurrected from the dead. That is why we proclaim: ‘Jesus is Lord’! ( 1 Cor 12:3). His Resurrection fulfils the above prophetic Psalm.” So we thank Jesus, because He descended to the very depths of our abyss – the spiritual and moral abysses of mankind; which also provoke hatred and death. Only an infinite mercy can lift us out of these abysses, so that we continue our journey towards the land of freedom, hope and life …” “The glorious Easter message is that Jesus Who was crucified, is not in the tomb. ‘He is Risen’ (Mt 28:6). Jesus Who suffered abandonment, an unjust condemnation, and the shame of an ignominious death, now makes us sharers of His immortal life. He enables us to see with the eyes of love and compassion – those who are hungry and thirsty, migrants and prisoners, marginalized and outcasts, victims of oppression and violence, poverty and social injustice.” ‘May the forthcoming ‘World Humanitarian Summit’ recognize the centrality of the human person, and the worth of his/her dignity. Let the words of Our Lord Jesus console us: “Take courage; I have conquered the world” (John 16:33)! —Dr. Trevor Colaso, Bandra (West)

Small and Marginal Farmer
I
n this ‘Jubilee Year of Mercy’, Pope Francis has been releasing video messages to illustrate his ‘Monthly Prayer Intentions’, prepared by the ‘Apostleship Of Prayer’. For the month of April, 2016: “That Small Farmers Receive A Joint Reward For Their Precious Labor”! “I thank you, ‘small farmer’. What you do is essential for the life of all. But I wonder how your work compensates? The earth is a gift from God; and it is not good to exploit it for the benefit of a few, depriving the majority of their rights and privileges …” The Pope’s noble objectives and appeals should be made universal and applicable because, in India, the plight of farmers is pathetic! Small and marginal farmers have a land share of just 44%, in spite of their farmer population distribution of 87%. According to The Indian Express, 07 April, 2016, ‘Farmer Suicides averaged 9 a day in parched Maharashtra. A staggering 3,228 farmers committed suicide in 2015, the highest since 2001. Vidarbha and Marathwada with 5.7 million farmers accounted for a staggering 83%. All suicides were directly or indirectly connected to farming. The top five major causes in 2014 were: bankruptcy and indebtedness (1,163); family problems (1,135); farming related issues (969); illnesses (745); and drug abuse and alcoholism (250). But in spite of all these drawbacks, Pope Francis encouragingly concludes: “The Good Lord had you in mind from the dawn of creation; ‘for He took you and put you in the Garden of Eden, to till the land and to maintain it’ (cf. Genesis 2:15)”. —Dr. Trevor Colaso, Bandra (West)

Only Liturgy, No Energy BCS has completed 25 years recently. During it’s existence it has taken up several challenges but today when the atmosphere in the country is vitiated with poisonous communal politics, we are not willing to talk or discuss the issue. There is a beef ban in force. Freedom of speech is danger. A debate raging on intolerance, nationalism v/s anti-nationalism. The latest test of nationalism is being chanting the slogan of “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. Even the ruling politicians declare that those who do not chant the slogan must leave the country. Students who dare to question the political class are beaten up and arrested without proving any charges. Open threats are issued to those who refuse to believe in certain ideologies but the people who issue threats are enjoying political patronage. Human rights activists, NGO’s are harassed even the Church-run NGO’s are under attack but that doesn’t disturb us. A uniform civil code, changes in Christian Marriage Act & Christian divorce Act in line with Hindu marriage act of 1955 are in the offing but the debate yet to be formulated. What will happen to the priests who bless the marriage of a divorcee under the Cannon law but has no legal sanctity under the Indian law if Uniform Civil Code comes into force?. The vision of the Sabha is very clear “to create a just society through involvement in Socio, Civic & Political affairs” and the anthem starts with: “Every Christian has a call, To lend a hand, To take a stand, To fight for justice in our land. With Sabha you have a voice and a choice” etc. etc. According to the National sample Survey(NSS) Christians are the worst effected by poverty only next to Mus-

lims. When Gulf jobs are drying up, hardly any jobs in the local job market, what’s going to be the future of our children? This will affect all of us except those who seek migration to countries with colder climate. Some of these issues I wanted to highlight at the BCS Deanery meeting held on 03.04.2016 at Don Bosco, Borivli but my request was turned down saying there was no AOB on the agenda. Fine, therefore, I have decided to put this in writing so that it can be shared widely. Forgiveness Forgotten in the Year of Mercy? It is surprising that a few cases of child sex abuse cases in Indian churches have come to light recently and only after the Vatican’s approval of guidelines drawn up by Indian bishops. The church in India, for sure, has woken up late in the day to realize that all along we have been like the proverbial ostrich, blissfully unaware of the happenings around, and pointing an accusing finger at the churches in the west where cases of child abuse are rampant but kept under wraps by bishops, and the accused priests let off the hook easily. It is also surprising that as per the guidelines stated , the “principle of zero tolerance and no forgiveness” will be followed. The importance of forgiveness is at the heart of every religion and forms the sum and substance of Christ’s teaching and public ministry. Scripture is replete with examples of how Jesus
forgave sinners and even his enemies while dying on the cross. We also have a glaring example of the woman caught in adultery in John 8: 1-11) who was set free by the Jewish authorities instead of being stoned to death after she was not condemned by Jesus. Have we forgotten this even in the jubilee year of mercy? —A.

How to save your failing marriage The article and prayer on page 12 of "the Secular Citizen" 4th April 2016 prompted me to write this letter. Various reasons(16) are shown as responsible for the suffering in marriage relationship. They are right. They manifest at certain times and may lead to many unpleasant outcome. These reasons grow like weeds and squeeze the beautiful plant namely "love". How the "love" was planted in the hearts of the spouses? The unconditional acceptance of the sanctity of marriage, the acceptance of the spouse with full heart and mind for life, the acceptance of Christ's words on indissolubility of marriage and the willingness to bear one's cross daily and follow Jesus ---these are the most important matters of faith a couple should have to have a successful married life and a happy family. This means the faith in Christ's Commandments. When this faith fades, problems may come to trouble. When we believe that the spouse is a gift of God, when we believe that there is nothing impossible for God, when we believe in prayer, when we believe the word of God" love one another as I have loved you" ,we get enough strength to defeat all negative thoughts and to love our spouse unconditionally. There is only one reason for the failure in married life and that is "lack of real faith in Jesus Christ our Lord" —K.C.Thomas

Modi - Govt. Does Not Help Marginalized Minority Students
T
housands of poor, minority students are refused their constitutionally due help by the Modi government, They are refused the promised scholarships, fellowships, food and lodging subsidies by the Bhartiya Janata Party Government. The latest CAG report and many other documents go to prove that all tall claims and false promises had been a grand foolery of the marginalised lot. Narendra Modi had taken a “sadbhavna upvas” (fasts for good purposes) before the last general elections and now we learn that it was just an election gimmick. His promises for equal treatment for minority students are long forgotten and his BJP government refused Rs. 85 crores to Muslim students - formerly allotted as ‘scholarship’. The Modi rule flatly refuses pre-matric, post-metric fellowships to deserving minority students. If the minority school authorities approach the Chief Minister (Mrs Anandiben in Gujrat), they are not well treated. Sister Mary Alphonsa - Principal of a local Convent in Ahmedabad, after many efforts to have a meeting with the Gujarat C.M, was nearly insulted maltreated in Gandhinagar. The Sister said: “I was in tears and was not allowed to say anything...” Meanwhile, the Modi’s NDA Government wants to organise a Sufi Mela in or around Delhi to show its ‘sympathy’ and ‘concern’ for the Muslims in India. Every BJP Muslim leader in Delhi is assigned a specific task to draw crowds for the Sufi Mela. Modi, according to a reliable information, wants to create a sympathy wave before elections in four states. After the BJP fiasco in Bihar, Modi’s popularity has been fast going down. The BJP supremo Amit Shah is currently on India tour with a hidden agenda of ‘hindutva’ under the

decent name of ‘jan jagruti abhiyan’ (people’s awareness). In mid-March, when the Parliament session was in progress, various reports were available and it is from there Modi governments apathy for the minority students were known. In
Ahmedabad city alone, nearly 16,000 ‘dalit’ children in the city’s scores of ‘aaganwadi’ were denied nutritious food. Lacs of Rupees were sent backunused for the purpose. A known Muslim social worker said: ‘Lacs of rupees remain un-spent for the riotaffected Muslims. The money was specially sent by the then Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee...” Modi was publicly reprimanded by Vajpayee. “ Practise ‘rajdharma’ The ruler has to rise above narrow, petty caste and creed walls...” The Indian Prime Minister, in less than 24 months, has visited 40 countres and spent crores of poor people’s money. Do the Western countries really know that 40 crores of Indians go to sleep at night without one square meal a day? Eleven crores of people have no water to drink, and 71 crores of people in India do not have proper housing, health-care facilities, The fig-

ures are frightening. Lacs of minority people live a second class, marginalized, helpless life. Lacs and crores of rupees allotted to control malnutrition remain un-used for the purpose. The BJP government in Gujarat did not spend Rs. 391.17 crores for the poor girl-child. Full-page advertisements in very many dailies and periodicals with P M and C M’s pictures are just an eyewash ! A grand foolery. The entire BJP cadre has learnt from Modi to promise stars and moons for the uneducated masses. And once elected, forget the promises and avoid the masses ! The U.S. fact-finding minority commission was refused the visa. The BJP’s treatment to the muslim and Christian minorities is shown as ‘an internal matter of india’ and the Indian visa was denied to the delegation.... Obama’s advice to Modi had been : The genuine progress of India depends of equal treatment to minorities... Does Modi care for it?

he city of Homs in western Syria, is the third largest city of the country after Aleppo in the north and the capital Damascus about 170 kms. to its south. Its population consisting of Arabs, Sunni Muslims, Alawites and Christians- reflected the religious diversity of Syria. The city has a number of historic mosques and churches and is not far from the Krak des Chevaliers castle, a world heritage site.
Who was this ‘Abouna Frans’ as he was fondly referred to? Fr Frans van der Lugt those who knew him, those who experienced his warmth, his love, his courage to give “all-of-himself” to those in need- would easily touch a heartless person. Because there were several rebels in the old city- that part was under siege. There were no food supplies coming in nor were people being allowed in or out. Though a relatively ‘normal’ life continued just streets away, in the government-held zones, starvation was claiming lives in the rebel enclave. Fr Frans existed on olives and broth fortified with weeds picked off the streets. “The faces of people you see in the street are weak and yellow,” he told a journalist “Their bodies are weakened and have lost their strength.” With his training in psychology, he documented the spread of mental illness among those who found themselves besieged: “I try to help them not by analysing their problems, as the problems are obvious and there is no solution for them here. I listen to them and give as much food as I can.” Frans was a healer – he touched the broken spirits of a battered people; he did not care for himself, if someone was physically sick, he did all he could (with the little he had) to make them well again. His forte however, was to soothe the mental and the spiritual (Contd.. on p. 8)

(Contd.. from p. 7) suffering they were going through. They sought his guidance and his direction- when they overwhelmed by the brutality around them. Very ironically he was gunned down on World Health Day, April 7th 2014, by those who felt that this healer had no right to live to heal the brokenness of Homs and Syria. It was just three days before what would have been his 76th birthday. On hearing about his tragic death Muslims and Christians came together despite the hostilities around them – to bury him in the compound of the Jesuit Centre. Fr Frans is revered as a Saint today by both Muslims and Christians. His tomb is visited today by people from all walks of life. They pray to him: so that he intercedes with his creator that justice and truth triumphs in Syria and in other parts of the Middle-East; for lasting peace and security in the region. They will never forget his words “the Syrian people have given me so much, so much kindness, inspiration and everything they have. If the Syrian people are suffering now, I want to share their pain and their difficulties”. This he did in full measure: he lived with them, he died for them. On April 9th 2014 Pope Francis at the General Audience in Rome said “last Monday in Homs, Syria, Rev Fr Frans van der Lugt one of my Dutch Jesuit confreres was assassinated at the age 75. He arrived in Syria some 5o years ago and always did good to everyone generously and with love. He was therefore loved and highly esteemed by Christians and Muslims.
again of the many people who are suffering and dying in that tormented country, my beloved Syria, which for too long has been the prey of a bloody conflict that continues to reap death and destruction. I also think of the many people who have been kidnapped, Christians and Muslims, Syrians and those from other countries, including bishops and priests. Let us ask the Lord that they may soon return to their loved ones and to their families and communities. From my heart I invite you all to join me in prayer for peace in Syria and the region, and I launch a heartfelt appeal to the Syrian leaders and to the international community: Please, silence the weapons, put an end to the violence! No more war! No more destruction! May humanitarian laws be respected, may the people who need humanitarian assistance be cared for and may the desired peace be attained through dialogue and reconciliation.” On February 10th 2014 The” Erasmus “blog in The Economist had a powerful article on Fr. Frans entitled ‘A Voice Crying in the Wilderness’- of the courage he demonstrated to tell the world of the pain, hunger and suffering of the people around him; a person who would never desert his people. Two months later the ‘Erasmus’ blog had these very moving words, “by staying in the heart of besieged Homs, during a takeover by rebels who included militant Islamists and then during a government siege, he was offering
succour to all victims of the conflict— and a kind of reproach to all the belligerents. He knowingly risked his life by remaining in a place where some Islamist rebels were active; but he also bore witness to the cruel consequences of the siege by refusing to leave when it would have been so easy to do so, and nobody would have blamed him. From the perspective he offered, all civilian victims were worthy of compassion, and fighters on both sides bore a share of blame. That sounds like a truth worth dying for—and it goes a bit further than religious dialogue.” In a world torn asunder by violence and hate; by discrimination and divisiveness; by powerful vested interests who do all they can to destroy the lives of ordinary mortals, Fr Frans is a beacon of hope; not only for the people of Syria-for whom he gave up his life- but for people everywhere –who yearn for a new dawn, a better tomorrow. He was relentless in his struggle to establish that better “tomorrow” for his people. He did NOT succeed in that endeavor. Despite the hopelessness and fear that have gripped their lives, many in Homs and in other parts of Syria are convinced that his martyrdom will not go in vain. (Fr Cedric Prakash sj works with the Jesuit Refugee Service(JRS) in the Middle East. He recently spent some time in Homs, Syria where Fr. Frans lived and died)

It’s the 2nd week of April, parents & children are ready & packed to utilise the holiday hours in a day to the fullest. The best of plans have been made, from Ballet / Football to Sudoku & Abacus classes, from Drawing, Art & Craft to Grammar sessions. Oh! and not forgetting the camps, sleepoverplans ……. How many hours, how many days would you be able to fill with all these activities? I hope children will not utter that phrase I’ve come to dread so much as an adult---‘I’m bored.’ Well if you made my passion your own, I guarantee you surely wouldn’t be. What is my passion ??? Read on to discover. A couple of years back an old Superman comic sold on eBay for $ 3.2 million. Collectors will pay a fortune for old comics while old DVD’s have no takers. Though Technology is certainly one of the most exciting consumables in our lives today, it is also driving us apart. Don’t get me wrong; not all Technology does this. I would be the first to agree that there is a lot of it at work today that actually brings people & generations closer. The bone of contention I have with Technology is that it has divided us over language, the way you & I talk to each other across generations, across genders. There was a time when sharing common goals, common loves was way easier because we TALKED since that was what we did best. We not only talked but LISTENED as well.

“My Best Friend is a person who will give me a book I have not read.”— Abraham Lincoln. I grew up on Books & even Comics (bought second hand because we got more of them for a lesser amount), which were available through membership at Libraries, Book stores & even on Pavements. Birthday & Christmas gifts were books & only books. By the time I was in my teens I had run the gamut of BOOKS. From Enid Blyton to the Classics, from the High School heroics into the detective shoes of the Hardy Boys & Agatha Christie, from the Fiction & Espionage genre to Romantic Pulp, I devoured them all. From teenage heart throb Archie& Sad Sack to Phantom – the ghost who walks& Casper – the friendly ghost, from Tin Tin & PopEye, to Garfield & the Superheroes, Comics too formed a part of my staple Reading diet. If I asked what comes to mind when you hear the word ‘BOOKS’ what would your answer be? ‘A cover supporting a bunch of pages backed up by a spine’, is that what you would say? Aaaah NO PLEASE!!! Books my dear readers open the door to amazing things. According to me they are one of the most successful innovations in the history of the world. After all they were man’s chief means of storing garnered information so as to be able to retrieve it when needed for maybe more than a 1000 years. Books have a lot of admirers like me. Many of us love books not only because of what is written in them but because they
by Ninette Dsouza, Teacher are ‘Works of Art’. Reading a book allows you to conjure up your own ideas about what a Super Hero could be like, or how spunky kids can outwit strait – laced adults, help you get into the rocking shoes of teenage detectives, & above all allow you to imagine how any of these would behave in a crisis. You can have multiple versions in the mind, multiple imaginations at play. When I read a book I am the Creator of the story, I imagine it all as I turn page after page. It is my story, my world so I can take it wherever I want it to go. When one of the books I have read is made into a movie & I watch it, the experience is not as fruitful. Often I just sit back switching off my imaginative, thinking, analytical brain & allow the movie maker to narrate to me what he thinks the story is. Watching a screen adaptation of a book I have read forces me to be stuck in a dark place as part of a captive audience, watching someone else’s story unfold. My imagination is at rest while my patience is on test. Always remember the screen adaptation of a book is not a movie version of the original. These are written specifically for cinema & are what my generation would call a travesty. Ask someone of my generation to review one such movie & you can be sure the critique will pan the movie. The humble books of old took me to places in a way the extravagant motion pictures of today can never do. Books allowed my imagination to run riot, to escape to my own world, one in which I could create my own characters, who helped me get over testing times of life, a world in which I could examine fragile thoughts without breaking them. Reading a book & following an action hero makes you feel invincible. You get swept up into a whole other universe. You get to become another character & experience what the character would - the feelings, memories, pain & anger, confusion, sadness & happi(Contd.. on p. 10)

(Contd.. from p. 9) ness & to forget everything around you. Books offer an escape from a humdrum routine so much so that if you are engrossed in one you can’t seem to think of anything else until it is finished. While 1 book can make you feel like you are on cloud nine & floating amidst them, another can make you feel like you are on an adventure par excellence. When I have a book in my hand & I am lost in the labyrinth of words I not only feel safe & comforted but I am able to keep at bay all that is not of a worthwhile nature until I have finished it. “Books support us in our solitude & keep us from being a burden to ourselves & to others” reiterated Jeremy Collier, the noted English theatre critic. The reading habit is like a Treasure Hunt and Books offer us the clues. As Walt Disney said, “There is more Treasure in Books than in all the Pirate’s Loot on Treasure Island”. So pick up a book or comic & start reading. It is a habit worth cultivating. You will never find yourself bored, your language will improve in leaps & bounds & you will learn to read between the lines. This habit will help when during your higher studies you may need to pore over volumes, make notes & read them all over again in order to make sense of them. As a Teacher of High School Mathematics & Science, I am not too familiar with the fine nuances of Grammar & Punctuation. I get by& get appreciated too because my message strikes a chord in the heart of the reader on account of the words I use. All thanks to my PASSION. Unaligned alliance
The Samna, the Sena’s mouth piece has been giving its senior partner a mouthful almost every alternate day. Ever since the two ‘warring partners’ came together to form a government in Maharashtra, there have been squabbles on a regular basis which is akin to some sort of marital discord. The Sena leadership has not forgotten the BJP for making it appear that it did not really care for the support in government formation. The NCP had offered unconditional support [for selfish reasons though] which reduced the importance of the Sena making it dispensable. Even when it came to ministerial portfolios, the Sena could hardly get what it wanted. This infuriated the leadership of the Sena and since then it is a blow hot blow cold situation. Sena is suffering from inferiority complex. The Sena has not left any stone unturned to ensure that the BJP does not sleep in peace. Remember the Pak singer Ghulam Ali episode last year or the ruckus over the launch of the Khurshed Kasuri’s book when it blackened the face of Sunindra Kulkarni’s [by the way that is the trade mark of the Sena and the MNS] and unprecedented war-like security that the BJP government [of which Sena is a partner] made just to make a point. The Pak cricket umpire was also not allowed to do his duty. Whether it was the Campus trouble in Hyderabad or JNU the Sena came down heavily on the NDA and the BJP. Time and again the Sena has pounced on the BJP. On the foreign policy too the Sena questioned Narendra Modi openly especially his tete-a-tete with his Pakistan counterpart. They ridiculed him over his brief unscheduled visit to Pakistan on Christmas day to wish him on his birthday – something that backfired with Pathankot episode. This gave the Sena added ammunition. With this sort of relation the BJP has not retaliated adequately. Except for the caustic comment by the Chief Minister about the remote control being in his hand, the BJP has been suffering this constant needling from its ally. As if this was not enough now the Sena questions the NDA’s undemocratic ways in Uttarakhand accusing the BJP of trying to impose one-party

VIEWS on NEWS rule in the country which it finds more dangerous and harmful than the authoritarian regime. The Sena is a component of the NDA at the centre and that makes it ironical. The BJP always taunted the previous UPA regime blaming the Congress for the occasional squabble with its allies. The party always gave an example of how Atalji kept his coalition partners in good humour all the time. But looking at things as they unfold especially with PDP in Kashmir for the past few months and the constant berating by the Shiv Sena, it is doubtful if the BJP is really open to alliances. It gives an impression that it cannot tolerate any dissent and want to run the affairs of the State as it likes. This is not in line with coalition dharma. In fact other allies too have a problem with the BJP. About the PDP the less said the better. The PDP-BJP coalition has formed the government in Kashmir. How long it can survive with Mehbooba at the helm, it is hard to say. The Akalis in the Punjab are far from happy with its junior in the State and senior at the Centre. With elections not too far, the Akalis will want to get as much mileage as possible. With destabilizing game going on in other states with HP on the hit list, which the Sena abhors, the future looks a bit blurred. In fact, other than Hindutwa, there is nothing common between the Sena and the BJP. *****
Money drain?
We have heard about the brain drain from the country over the years. In fact, it all started decades ago when the specialized education especially in scientific and financial fields was not available in India. Bright students – some lucky enough to have rich parents and some brilliant ones availing of scholarship made their way to countries like the USA, UK etc to pursue their scholastic ambitions. These countries offered advanced studies and where the students excelled they were also offered lucrative jobs by the private sector in those countries. Innumerable students settled abroad to make their careers with attendant perks for a cushy life – some-
by Marshall Sequeira thing that was not available here. They made those countries their homes some of them even fail to acknowledge their roots. Some who are born in those countries think it is below their dignity to say that they are of Indian Origin. The country therefore was deprived of the contribution of these scholars in the nation building exercise. This was lamented by all political parties and wondered how this trend can be reversed. With added facilities / opportunities now available and call by the Government to return to the motherland, the brain drain is under control. With economic growth, the country has plenty of billionaires and millionaires and the number is growing at a rapid pace. To those with business acumen, this country continues to offer opportunities and this is evident from the fact that the world has come to acknowledge the country’s growing clout. The country continues to produce more and more millionaires. According to New World Wealth, some 4000 High Net Worth individuals have shifted overseas from India in recent times. Since India continues to prosper, the country will not be adversely impacted in the immediate future. But when resourceful persons choose better pastures, the nation is bound to be affected in some way or the other. The government must factor this and ensure that its policies concerning the ease of doing business are constantly reviewed so that the HNWIs are not tempted to move out of the country. They have earned their wealth here and it is only fair that they keep it in the country. Others who avail of huge bank loans and find it hard [or do not want to pay back] also run away. The government must come heavily on such individuals while not being unfair to those who are genuine defaulters.

Be Different, stop following the crowd
Being different from the crowd is one of the most important things in one’s life. At the end of the day, crowd might have quantity, but it’s always one person outside that crowd who leads them. So it’s your choice whether to be the driven or be the driver. Here are a few ideas on how to be different from the crowd
A
person who stands out from the crowd is someone who is comfortable with who they are, has the confidence to be unique and to let their individuality shine. Standing out from the crowd means that you’re not afraid to speak your mind and to avoid following others when to do so results in sameness and conformity. A person who stands out from the crowd may be someone whose appearance is striking in some way, but more often than not, it is about someone who generates admiration and is remembered by others for being someone special and worthy of looking up to. While standing out from the crowd might not be something you can achive every day of your life, it’s definitely a worthwhile goal to aspire to as a whole, especially if it helps you achieve your other goals in life. Stand up Take a stand, have an opinion and question things before accepting or rejecting them. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you’ll have to hold your head higher. Make your voice heard, your opinions worked

on. Shake the grounds with what you have. Get noticed. Any publicity is good publicity. But make sure you’ve the right reason. Lead No single human has ever achieved great things. There have always been people behind. So, lead the crowd. Talk to them about your choice and opinions. Show them the way. This way, you’ll be outside the crowd because you’re ahead of them. Plan ahead Any action, when you wish to stand out, needs planning. Jot down all the things you want to do. Then plan on achieving your goals step by step. Accept the fact that you cannot be someone overnight. Take one step at a time. Walk firmly but don’t kick someone off the path. Always remember, the people you leave behind while going up the ladder will meet you on your way down. Improvise Learning is always important. Be it academics, sports or life. When you improvise as you walk, you’ll be able

to take a bigger step, each time you put your foot forward. Taking a few big and risky steps will give you an edge over the others to climb the ladder. Be humble Being different is like holding sand in your hand. The harder you hold it, the lesser will be left in your hand. So, be humble. “Pride goes before a fall” as it is rightly said. • Don’t be afraid. People will actuallt admire people who stand out from the crowd. • Never, ever let people tell you that you’re loser because you’re differen. • If you’re lucky enough to be different, don’t ever change. • Be yourself and don’t just follow the crowd! If people don’t like it then they are probably just jealous. • Always remember this mantra: To be one, to be united is a great thing. But to respect the right to be different is maybe even greater.

A Touch Of
Class
From Satanic noise to divine calm; from upbeat to uplifting music

Jubilee is a time to thank God with joy and pride for the past event it celebrates: the 38th International Eucharistic Congress held in our city in 1964. But it is also a time for introspection about the present; and to plan for more fruitful liturgies in the future. I am pointing out two ways we can achieve a touch of class in our worship: One, by entering into the deepest meaning of Words of Consecration; and Two, with a better form of uplifting music for our worship. In this little piece and in the free demo that will follow in October I am first writing about the second point: to use music with a touch of class as I am aware that churches will soon be choosing music for Christmas. I will deal with the Eucharistic Words of Jesus later. If we keep in mind that the Eucharist is a celebration of Christ’s deathresurrection [not a birthday party!] it would help both priest and people to strike a balance in the way Mass is celebrated. While there is room for informality to catch the people’s attention [as in the Introduction and the homily] there must also be a place for formality and mystery which is enhanced by silence. Then we are in the realm of the much needed interior participation. Sobriety is particularly required in the sphere of liturgical music which is meant to create the right mood for

by Fr Aniceto Nazareth worship. While the words of our sacred chant should be deep and meaningful they must be couched in melodies that are appealing, yet not commonplace, easy enough for everyone to participate, yet not trite. Thus far we commonly resorted to “folk” or even “pop” styles of music in our liturgies. However the few samples of music I published from the classics [as in the Easter Exsultet] soon became very popular indicating that there is a hunger for a better brand of music at Mass. With this in mind I have almost finished preparing a book of Masses based on the classics that will lift you to the Divine! It will be available at the demo. I have kept the people’s part easy to learn and sing. The keyboard accompaniments are given in full [not just sin-
gle line music with the chords]. This will invite good keyboardists back into action, giving a boost to congregational singing by their excellence. One can even use the score I am providing to make accompaniments for small groups like a string quartet or just a plucked guitar. However for parishes that do not have keyboardists who can read standard sheet music, I am even trying to make available mp3 recordings of these accompaniments. Needless to say those who lead the singing should familiarize themselves with the introductions, sequence and speed all these recordings, so that all [Choir and People] are able to sing in sync with them. For many who lead the singing at Mass this may be their first brush with the classics. So our free demo of selections from the new book, Classic Masses, will include the dynamics of classical singing, breath control, styles of singing, method of teaching and interpretation of the text, an altogether enjoyable and refreshing experience.

Tackle Monetary Crisis To survive a monetary crisis, now is the time for specific actions that can help remedy the situation before it gets worse. And you can do it without applying for government aid

Depending on your emergency, there needs to be cover-ups and stitches in time Credit card debt This is a desperate situation so you need a desperate measure; borrow money from a loved one. Match or top what they might be getting from an fixed deposit and pay them the interest so you don’t feel like a total charity case. If it’s a home or education loan, liquidate any assets you might have to make the EMI. It it’s a’potentially homeless’ situation, you may even consider borrowing against your provident fund. If it’s a car loan, then bite the bullet and give-up the car. Assess your necessity-versus-luxury ratio and see it there’s a luxury you can afford to live without till such time as you are more comfortably placed. Account for your EMI’s in your fund. It should have enough money to tide you through six to nine months of not drawing a salary. Medical emergency Follow the same steps as you would to clear an EMI; liquidate any and all assets to pay off any expensive loans you many have taken. But give yourself time to recover and account for the fact that you will be paying a higher premium on medical insurance. Scale up the cover on your medical insurance. This is an expense you cannot scrimp on and the sooner you start, the better prepared you are for the next time. Be smart and take care-

A Six Letter Word: P r a y er by Rtn. Calwyn D'Abreo natus ad majora
you may be a detriment to another homosapien who rejects that which is in your comfort zone. For what is good for him is bad for you and vice versa.
P
rayer is a six letter word. Get to know how much the writer does not know about prayer. Help him realize the succinct value of prayer. Prayer as a word is synonymous with action that emanates from it’s presence and occurrence in as we preamble and preface the meaning of this word to power the syntax we offer for a manifestation. But, then, what is prayer….. in any language of the world. What is the essence of it’s presence as a word. Is it a verb or a noun or does it just assemble itself as a word that has gained reckoning by the mere presence of it inside and outside us. Why did there have to be a word called prayer. Was it because there were desires and wishes to be acquired and a plausible emotion inside the labyrinth of the word prayer that was to contain these needs. So, then, the action of asking a divine power allowed for and justified the use of an invocation , an intercession , a faith bound petition… call it what you feel comfortable with and it is a passage to the meaning of prayer. What is the efficacy of prayer. Is it true that prayer has to be ingressed within the hallowed halls of religious institutions. Cannot one make use of prayer within one’s self or within the confines of his own habitat or in the quietness of his Chamber . Is there a secret to prayer that supersedes all other methods of asking for delivery and completion. Is prayer always assenting to enable derive results. Why is there so much of a complication when it comes to understanding the meaning of prayer when every breath that you take is an affirmative prayer that is in full consonance with the affable history of your being ?
18 April 2016
Actually, prayer is a fusion of the mind within the ambit of a desire or a need or a want that you are devoid of or for others for whom you pray are in need of and the ratio of its existence and efficacy is the emotional value you give...... the ciborium of your thoughts to the manifestation that will take place because of your immediate and faith ridden belief. Just like anybody can dance so also anybody can pray. If you are a gifted dancer you are a successful artist, Similarly, if you are within divine assembly with what it takes to pray effectively you are a good prayer person. The results of prayer is manifestation. A good prayer manifests that what and which you have prayed for. In fact , you can pray for good and also for anything bad. The option is yours. The results are also what you will experience. All prayers are offerings that are submissions and are given away and esoterically create a vacuum within the inner sanctum of your being. What is emptied is generously filled by the non cataclysmic inference of fruition . Now , we can subside and recede with a logical answer to what prayer is. It is asking with faith and confidence , allowing for your emotions to act as a catalyst whilst you indulge in corporal feelings that excite that which you are asking to come to final maturity. It is good to know that whatever you ask in prayer is given. The good that you ask for
Prayer is an arrangement and understanding with who we all call God, who we also know as the infinite intelligence and the source of all universal energies. God has no gender and has no surface representation in terms of being a humanoid. God is energy and the vibrational effect of energy that is is thereby deployed to all things created from the bowels of the earth. Source energy is which is God energy and has infinite intelligence as if three persons in one entity is and the devotion to one is in vibration with the other becoming equally effective and never mal adjusted to give different results. Prayer is a commandment that is a referral to your thought that created the need for prayer according to the circumstance in your personality and the demands of your desires and needs and wants. Mind you, praise and worship to the entity we call God is not praying . Remember, in praying we ask and wait obediently in faith to contain a delivery. In praising and worship on account of the reported manifestation you are engaging the fabric of gratitude which is a reciprocal law unto itself. Infinite intelligence is all creative from the beginning of time. Like all artists God has a masterpiece in every creation of His in this Universe. As if there is a God DNA that compiles itself and accumulates data to cause and effect a unit of value within the span of time designated by natural laws of the universe. Imagine the intelligence that went into the forming of a foetus as the sperm met the ovum and within the divine powers of the intelligence a life is given birth to in a period of time within the seasons of conception. What is Anthropomorphism? Anthropomorphism (personification) is attribution of human characteristics to anything other than a human being. Examples include depicting deities with human form and ascribing human emotions or motives to cartoons. The word anthropomorphism was first used in the mid – 1700s. Most cultures have traditional fables with anthropomorphized animals, who can stand or talk as if human, as characters. The word derives from the Greek ‘anthropos’- human and ‘morphe’ – shape or form. In religion and mythology, anthropomorphism refers to the perception of a divine being or beings in human form or the recognition of human qualities in these beings.

Tashlich is a jewish ceremony that takes place in most cases on the first day of Rosh Hashanah. If Rosh Hashanah falls on a Sabbath, Tashlich occurs the next day. It is both ritual and prayer, which symbolizes casting off the old sins and woes of the year to prepare for a better and happy new year, as based on the jewish calendar. Tashlich means to ‘cast off’ or to ‘cast away’. In Tashlich, jews go to rivers or creeks and empty their pockets, throwing the contents into the body of water. If someone has nothing in their pockets, then breadcrumbs may be thrown. In this way a person is now symbolically emptied of the sins of last year and with nothing to fill the pockets, the person must also depend upon God to survive.
What is Free Trade?
Free trade is a system in which goods, capital and labour flow freely between nations, without barriers which could hinder the trade process. In free trade agreements taxes, tariffs and import quotas are all eliminated, as are subsidies, tax breaks and other forms of support to domestic producers. Put simply, free trade enables foreign companies to trade just as efficiently, easily and effectively as domestic producers.

What Are Knickerbockers? A laurel Knickerbockers are a type of men’s pants, also known as trousers or breeches, that come down to the knee instead of the ankle and were especially popular in the 20th century. This type of trouser was worn in the summer by boys until they were considered adults. Once his happened, usually around puberty, boys could begin wearing regular trousers that went all the way down to the ankles. This was considered a right of passage into adulthood. This particular type of pants was known in New York where people who wore this style of pants lived. The pants become a symbol for the area, helped along by ‘A History of New York’.

All this goes to prove that though women may be physically the weaker sex, intellectually they are on par with men. Psychologists look at the thought processes of an individual to find out
why she admires success or brilliance. They try to find out how these feelings of inferiority originated before addressing them. They set about convincing the individual that it is human to err and that a single mistake does not reflect on their capabilities. They help the person to pinpoint the flaws in their thinking and thus avoid all these negative and unrealistic thoughts. Workshops are also used to dispel these damaging negative thoughts. Another strategy used is that of writing therapy whereby the individual writes down her achievements and thus reinforces positive feelings. When they read what they have written down in future, they feel confident and mentally stronger. They begin to enjoy their success. Affirmative action in empowering the girl child, like charity, begins at home. If we like to think of ourselves as enlightened parents, we must jettison our prejudices against the girl child. We need to keep an open mind when judging the capabilities of our sons and daughters. We should not imprison the minds of our daughters with feelings of inferiority. Teachers likewise should nurture the talents of their pupils irrespective of gender. At the work place, managers should encourage and reward all, irrespective of gender. Productivity will improve. Students should treat each other with respect and spare a few words of appreciation for the achievers. God did not create inequality and prejudice. That is our creation. What women need is justice, not mercy. It is up to us to be instruments of change. Are we ready to take up this challenge?

Beauty tricks to try with coconut oil Coconut oil is one of the most essential and miracle product for our skin. Make the best of it and use it for your daily beauty routine
concealer and mascara. This way not only will you remove all the makeup but also you will condition and moisturise your eyelashes and eyebrows. Hand cream: Coconut oil is amazing for your hands and you can use it as a hand cream. Rub it on your hands and
(Contd.. from p.15) Gratitude is concomitant with manifestation. Praise and worship is adjudicated and decided upon by the recipient of the manifestation because whatever is given is because you asked. The law of Reciprocity now comes into place and a myriad allowances and benefits begin to occur to whom the praise and worship came from. Gratitude is the aftermath attended to by most after that which they have prayed for is manifested. But more powerful than that is the attention the infinite intelligence gives to you when you believe it is given even before you receive it. Therefore our prayers for what we want follow a certain protocol. We think a thought. It may or may not emanate as a desire to achieve, to get or to be. If it does then your thought becomes a thing to create a need and a want. Prayer begins now. This is the moment to convert into becoming a receptacle of faith.
GROOMING Here are probably hundreds of different ways to use this amazing oil for different kinds of purposes, because it’s a truly amazing natural treasure of vitamins and it has antiseptic, antibacterial, nourishing and healing properties. Here are beauty uses of this oil Makeup remover: Coconut oil play a role of tender and gentle cleanser for your skin, it removes makeup and leaves your skin very soft and smooth. Eye makeup remover: It will also condition your lashes. Allpy coconut oil on the cotton pad, gently press it over your eyes to let it dissolve makeup for a little moment and then gently wipe away all the makeup from your eye area: your eye shadow,

nails, the oil will soak into your skin, nails and cuticles and make them stronger and healthier looking. Natutal healing scalp treatment: Because of its healing properties coconut oil can help to treat dry, flaky scalp, dandruff and even eczema. If your coconut oil is solidified, you can slightly warm it up on a hot bath and then massage your scalp with it in circular motions. Face cleaner: Many women swear by its use as a nighttime moisturiser for their face, too. You can try the double-cleansing method: Simply rub the oil in circular motions all over your face and neck, giving yourself a gentle massage as you go. When you’re done, wash off the residue with your favourite cleanser.
But the method can go awry if you are not in full regale or in delight to achieve that which you want. It is in the emotional value you give the thoughts in the quietness of your mind or in the verbal representation and chants that speak of your need that you find a corresponding acceptance. Manifestation is often found on this bandwidth. Depends on how you quartz lock yourself on this channel of pure divine acceptance before it is given. Faith is the essence of fertile prayer. Have faith .

reativity is sometimes thought of as frivolous, but there are numerous reasons to embrace your inner artist. You don’t have to paint, sing, dance or even be an actual artist to be creative. The point is to let your creativity out in whatever form that makes you happy. If anyone’s ever told you that art isn’t important, simply remind them of all the important reasons to embrace your inner artist. Appreciate who you are Everybody has Everybody has something that makes them unique. Creativity is a large part of that. One of the biggest reasons to embrace your inner artist is it helps you appreciate who you are. In a world where we try to fit so many different societal moulds, we need some way to find that unique spark inside ourselves. When we find that, we finally appreciate who we are and who we could be. See life in new ways Talk to artists, musicians, writers and other common creative types and you’ll find they all have a different way of looking at life. learn it’s okay to be vulnerable and you also learn how to deal with it. Give something back It doesn’t matter what you create. You have an inner artist for a reason. We often expect the world to give us something when instead it’s waiting for us to give it something. The world around us is built by #people who weren’t afraid to embrace the artist within them. Start a business, write a blog, plant a tree or learn a new skill. #Everything we create helps create a better world. Learn to appreciate others The more we learn about ourselves as we embrace our inner artists, the better we understand others. As a result, we can appreciate differences more. Reflection On Women For A Better World

WHAT IS A PAY CARD?
A pay card is a payroll debit card that typically looks just like any other credit or debit card. These cards are usually issued by employers looking for a more convenient and cost-effective way to pay their employees. An employee can have one of these cards and can be paid by direct deposit even if he or she does not have a bank account. The debit payroll cards is loaded with the employee’s paycheque amount and is generally accepted anywhere a debit or credit card is, so the holder may use the money instantly.
