Juniper Networks and FOX Sports. FOX SPORTS is Australia’s leading sports producer and broadcaster, broadcasting an average of 23 hours of LIVE sport per day into 2.3 million homes around Australia with over seven million potential viewers through FOXTEL, AUSTAR and OPTUS TV. FOX SPORTS also provides the FOX SPORTS NEWS channel via IPTV through FetchTV, produces a dedicated FOX SPORTS NEWS TV mobile phone channel and provides mobile content to all three major Australian telcos.

Challenges

Solution

In moving from SD to HD production, the impact on capacity and performance of contribution and production networks is significant. Increasing the amount of native HD content for FOX SPORTS subscribers meant the existing FOX SPORTS delivery and contribution solutions needed a major review and critical assessment. For program contribution, FOX SPORTS typically used a combination of one-way-satellite and telco digital video network (DVN) services. However, these solutions are generally bandwidth restricted, requiring heavy video compression and encoding, which can severely impact the overall broadcast quality delivered to subscribers.

The FOX SPORTS solution comprised two elements—portable outside broadcast (OB) equipment and a fixed-service router deployment. FOX SPORTS deployed two Juniper EX4200 Ethernet switches in a Virtual Chassis configuration to each of its 12 OB units. The OB units travel with the main broadcast production vehicles, allowing interconnection of the venue media and data services to the FOX SPORTS TV center.

FOX SPORTS’ desire was to secure high-capacity services in key sporting locations, removing costly satellite capacity and eliminating the need for heavy video compression. In addition, FOX SPORTS also wished to deploy a converged video, data and communications solution to enable full two-way communications between the various venues and the TV station. The net result would be a huge increase in its HD capability and quality, while streamlining back-end HD broadcasting production processes. To achieve this, FOX SPORTS decided to deploy its own private network infrastructure over fiber carrier services and upgrade its existing network environment. This solution enables FOX SPORTS to transmit multiple streams of HD and SD video, and voice and data content from multiple locations over a single, homogenous network. It is a huge amount of data with a requirement for very high levels of quality of service (QoS) and reliability. To build its new virtual private network, FOX SPORTS required a new Ethernet switching and routing layer on the existing fiber network.

The OB units remain parked in the sports venue for the duration of the match with the Juniper EX4200 switches connecting to the FOX SPORTS network using especially rugged optical interface cable and connectors. FOX SPORTS deployed two MX240 routers in its Sydney TV center as well as the Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager solution. According to Tomkins, the EX4200 switches were the ideal solution for FOX SPORTS, offering the high availability and carrier-class reliability of modular systems with the economics and flexibility of stackable platforms. “Unlike most deployments, our switches are installed in cases that move around the country, so we needed a solution that’s very reliable—bomb proof,” said Tomkins. “When you’re in the business of live broadcasting, the availability of your network and the reliability of your network infrastructure is critical.” “The EX4200 is robust and very fault-tolerant hardware,” Tomkins continued. “It offers a redundant power supply to ensure we remain operational even during a power outage. Its scalability was also a draw card. It comes with 24 ports, so it can support our future requirements as we grow.”

Innovation Is The Engine of Growth

By John Adams

The overall electronic security market is set to grow at $US110 billion through 2020 at the powerful rate of 11.3 per cent COUPLE of things of interest came out of last month’s contribution to the endless surveys and reports that pour from market research companies. The first was IHS’ empirical underscoring of something CCTV people have suspected for a while – sales came off the boil last year after years of stellar growth. In 2014 sales revenue grew 14.2 per cent globally but last year, growth in sales fell to 2 per cent (it’s expected to bounce back to 6.5 per cent in 2016). There was something else interesting, too, something that highlighted the true nature of the sales slowdown. The Chinese market, which grew by 26.7 per cent in 2014, grew by just 4.9 per cent in 2015 as a result of price erosion, not falling unit sales, according to IHS. In China and elsewhere, unit sales volumes increased at healthy rates. But the findings of the latest crop of reports weren’t all bad for manufacturers, distributors and installers. The overall electronic security market is set to grow at $US110 billion through 2020 at the powerful rate of 11.3 per cent. The reason for the growth is 3-fold. Bigger budgets, increasing global threat levels and good old product innovation. As we head to Security 2016 Expo in Melbourne suppliers, installers, consultants and end users need to bear in mind that the last thing on the list is the key to profitability and operational success. Electronic security

A

technology has reached a point of layered ‘awareness’ that allows security managers to pry considerably more capability from inputs and outputs than ever before. There are new and clever ways of making the information from hundreds of millions of inputs and outputs actionable and accessible. According to a Grand View report, adoption of innovative technologies such as cloud, and intelligent and analytics-based security systems, is expected to enhance the safety process across multiple verticals. In addition, a rising investment in hybrid solutions for real-time monitoring is expected to drive growth. The report said the security market is witnessing technological innovation from analogue to incorporated IP networked systems. The shifts include a disseminated public address environment integrated with smart devices, ubiquitous sensors, video displays, video analytics and access control systems. Rising security concerns from hardware, personnel, network and information infrastructure will also positively impact market demand. Leading growth will be the transport segment, which is estimated to account for 20.1 per cent of the market. The report contained a few other plums that will interest electronic security people. Network cameras accounted for 53 per cent of all security cameras shipped in 2015 – that’s the first time IP has beaten analogue in a global count. Less than 1 per cent of network cameras shipped were 4K-compliant but given more than 250 million cameras were installed, that’s still around 2.5 million 4K cameras. Something else to note is that there’s been a strong move from traditional analogue to HD analogue offered by HD-CVI, TVI and AHD

formats. This area of the market is reputed to be growing – consider that only 24 per cent of cameras sold in China are IP. This morass of statistics underlines some of the things we’ve all been noticing. The trend to integration of multiple sub systems managed by single applications, the use of IVA to inform live monitoring applications and investigations. The widespread uptake of mobile management solutions. The implementation of thermal cameras and IVA to give ironclad intrusion detection capability reported via VMS or security management systems. IVA is a serious building trend – it’s not about face recognition in most applications but mining camera data for incidents worthy of operator attention. And there’s more. New wireless comms solutions, the simplification of access control applications – this makes systems more affordable, more available. With intrusion detection and home automation there’s wireless everything, as well as more access to high end wired sensors for capable alarm panels - even high tech paragons like Xtralis are in on the act with VESDA VLQ. And mobile management of security and automation solutions rocks. What will I be looking out for at Security 2016? IP-based access control. The intrusion of Wi-Fi and Z-Wave comms. Lateral enhancements to management systems. IVA is always very interesting. I want to see the latest big-end NVRs. Fire detecting cameras. The new Axis iCS lens – what is that thing? And I want a snapshot of video compression. Don’t think that revolution is over by a long shot, security people. Development has just got started and when it arrives, super condensed video is going to change absolutely everything. n

Alarm.com and Comcast Buy Key Chunks of Icontrol

COMCAST has acquired Icontrol’s Converge software platform and Alarm.com has bought Icontrol’s Connect and Piper business units for around $US140 million. These are interesting moves at multiple levels. Comcast is the largest broadcasting and cable TV company on Earth, with $US75 billion in sales. Its new Converge software platform facilitates the Xfinity touch panel and back end servers’ communication with security sensors and automation devices, including cameras. Direct connection to a smart keypad and sensors is a key part of true cloud solutions. Meanwhile, Alarm. com’s buy is interesting, too. There’s growth

- Connect gives Alarm. com an interactive security and home automation platform that already supports 1.6 million subscribers, including ADT Pulse. And there’s the hardware side. Piper has a WiFi-enabled video and home automation hub that might allow Alarm.com to extend its vertical. “This acquisition will enhance our research and development scale so that we can continue to deliver long-term value to our partners through innovative technology,” said Steve Trundle, president and CEO of Alarm.com. “We look forward to welcoming the Icontrol team and to building upon the solid relationships within its customer base.”

Milestone Tweaks Distribution Model n MILESTONE Systems Australia says it is committed to an open platform channel partner strategy that continuously reviews existing distribution arrangements. This ensures that the resellers, and

Danielle Joynson

ultimately the end users, have access to resources that enable them to best meet their needs in an evolving market. Over the last few years Milestone Systems Australia has been carefully reviewing the distribution landscape and its ability to service these ongoing needs. According to Danielle Joynson, distribution channel manager, Milestone Systems Australia, “Milestone has identified an opportunity

to further support the open platform philosophy with our distributors, as well as enhance the current distribution model to better serve the increasing Australian security market needs.” The new distribution model differentiates the roles that each distributor provides to the channel. The roles include Value Added Distributors (VADs) and Vertical Specialist Distributors (VSD). VADs remain as the category for

broad-based distributors, while the newly introduced VSD distributors will provide further reach and coverage to the specialized vertical segments not currently serviced by VADs. “This realignment of the channel will be conducted in a number of phases and evolve into an ongoing review process to ensure there is the right mix for our total market coverage,” said Joynson.

Greenslopes Shopping Mall

Very strong hemispheric view from Mobotix

Bridge Building

Alarm Innovations has designed and installed a Mobotix CCTV solution for Greenslopes Shopping Mall which employs Wi-Fi bridge pointto-point technology to reduce the expense of cabling in a large and complex brownfield site. REENSLOPES Shopping Mall sits on a 1.45Ha site at Greenslopes in Brisbane. Typical of many older suburban malls in Brisbane, Greenslopes serves a local community that is growing fast through an increase in highdensity housing in the area. The increase in customer traffic has increased the demand for a video surveillance solution to allow management to provide enhanced safety and security and protect the mall against litigation. Brisbane-based Alarm Innovations was called

in to design and install the new security system for the centre, which was up and running in less than a week. By using Wi-Fi bridge point-to-point technology, the need for cabling through premises within the centre was virtually eliminated, keeping disruption to businesses to an absolute minimum and making installation easier for the technical team. A combination of MOBOTIX i25, c25 and p25 cameras has been installed to cover the mall, their primary purpose being to protect against

litigation risks as a result of accidents and other incidents which could occur. Footage is monitored in the centre’s control room using Mobotix MxControlCenter software and can easily be viewed remotely from head office in Melbourne as well. The MOBOTIX indoor camera range offers the same levels of image quality and functionality as external cameras from Mobotix but at a considerable saving, as the devices do not need to be built to withstand harsh external conditions. Interior views generally cover shorter distances than exterior ones, meaning Mobotix hemispheric technology can be used to cover an entire room with no blind spots, reducing the number of cameras required. The i25 is a hemispheric camera with 6MP Moonlight Technology and will be wall mounted with a tilt angle of 15 degrees to achieve a panoramic overview of a room. If mounted above the door the i25 looks even partially underneath or into the door. The i25 is available in both colour and monochrome models, which caters to the most challenging lighting conditions and a wide range of applications. Mobotix i25 supports remote storage, MxActivitySensor offers heat map and people counting, and reduces false alarms. The cameras have onboard event recording to SD card, as well as direct to NAS. Alarm Notification is via email, FTP

and VoIP (SIP) and the cameras have 2-way audio and low current draw of less than 4W. Offering more than just security, the cameras have also proved to be an invaluable business tool, thanks to Mobotix MxAnalytics people-counting and heatmapping technology. The data provides insights into customer numbers and behaviours, which can be used for marketing purposes, as well as for setting rent levels. MOBOTIX MxMC video management software has a simple and intuitive user experience and is free of charge, with no update or licensing costs, and can support an unlimited number of cameras, screens, and users. It has single and double click support for drag and drop and gestures, and multiscreen or direct viewing of events and alarm messages, represent just some of the advantages of this new software. Functions include the newly developed research and player tools, which provide a high-speed searching facility and fast results. This is a movement-controlled, software-based image analysis function for detecting movement of people and objects in a monitored area – you can choose full image or a section. Supporting this capability is that fact MxActivitySensor is easy to configure in ways that ensure minimal false alarms in applications with large amounts of external interference – moving rain on the camera lens, glare, trees or creeping shadows. During setup you configure settings via browser, like image area and sensor sensitivity for image analysis events, and then plug in the corresponding ‘acceptors’ of events. This might be recording or alarm notification via email or FTP, or playing of a recorded message at the camera, an acoustic or visual alarm signal. MxActivity Sensor is designed to handle people crossing an image or moving toward or away from the camera, even when there is a large amount of movement in a scene. From the point of view of setup, you simply highlight the area in which you want to detect movement, or the direction in which you want movement to be detected and you locate the camera in the best way to pick up movement representing a threat. At Greenslopes Mall, Wi-Fi bridge technology and Mobotix indoor cameras supported by MxActivity Centre are keeping costs and labour requirements low, while achieving strong surveillance coverage. n

FLIR

by j o h n a d a m s

FLIR Shows Intent FLIR has acquired camera manufacturer Innovative Security Designs as part of a move to expand its optical camera range. But the move also highlights FLIR’s expectation of where the video surveillance market is heading. N recent times FLIR has acquired mass market CCTV provider, Lorex, and high end VMS and camera manufacturer, DVTEL. The acquisition of ISD is another step in rounding out FLIR’s optical camera offering but not in the most obvious way. ISD is small, with most its market penetration in the U.S. market. FLIR suggests the acquisition fills a gap in its mid to high-end offering and while that’s true to a point, ISD’s cameras are not the optical equivalents of benchmark products from tech houses like GBO. Furthermore, DVTEL made some lovely high end cameras in its own right. “The acquisition adds an additional level of expertise to FLIR’s technology portfolio,” said John Distelzweig, VP & GM at FLIR. “ISD is known for developing innovative IP security solutions that combine high-resolution digital video cameras with built-in leading edge technologies. Furthermore, this acquisition strengthens FLIR’s position as an endto-end video surveillance provider by adding the technology and expertise to develop mid- to highend visible cameras.” But it’s the sort of cameras ISD makes that is most instructive. Rather than trying to blow rivals out of the water with class-leading resolution or

see-in-the-dark low light performance, ISD built a boutique business manufacturing very capable 1080p optical cameras that incorporate a profound focus on the network edge and actively integrate the fundamental demands of security operations with the regulatory and compliance needs of IT people. ISD has some cool products, including the Lynx netSeries miniBall, released in 2013. Lynx incorporated the Microsoft technology stack – it was essentially an edge computing platform for video surveillance applications running Microsoft Embedded Windows 7, encased in an IP66 dome camera enclosure. As well as being optioned for seamless integration with modern IT networks, the camera teamed a useful CMOS sensor and a 3-10mm motorised remote control zoom, delivering 1080p resolution and simultaneous analogue and IP multistreaming at 30ips. ISD’s full body Jaguar camera released in 2012 is also instructive. It included zero-touch installation with selected VMS solutions, the same 3-10mm remotely controllable lens, low light performance down to .05 lux, a microSD slot and an SDXC card slot, the latter allowing the potential for up to 4TB onboard storage. Jaguar was Trinity and HDWitness server ready, featured a microphone, PoE and an excellent signal-to-noise ratio of 72.4 dB suggesting it would make the most of its low light capability. Given the year of its release, Jaguar was particularly strong on the network side. Compression options included H.264 baseline profile, main profile (the default), high profile Level 5, and MPEG, giving a total of 4 simultaneous video streams. Jaguar also included ISD’s EDGE technology touted as offering DVR-free operation and incorporating analytics that report human traffic in real time. That IVA capability was neat in 2012 but it’s a major trend now. “ISD has a loyal customer base,” Distelzweig said. “In addition to supporting all of ISD’s existing products, FLIR will benefit from providing valued customers access to FLIR’s end-to-end security solutions, featuring an open platform design, stateof-the-art analytics, and the widest range of video security products.”. n

The FOX SPORTS solution comprised two elements—portable solution outside broadcast (OB) equipment and aInterlogix fixed-service router deployment. FOX SPORTS deployed two Juniper EX4200 at Security Expo Ethernet switches in a Virtual Chassis configuration to each of its 12 OB units. The OB units travelvia with theHills main broadcast the stand (K2) production vehicles, allowing interconnection of the venue July 20-22, Melbourne media and data services to the FOX SPORTS TV center.

Visit

Convention Centre

The OB units remain parked in the sports venue for the duration of the match with the Juniper EX4200 switches connecting to the FOX SPORTS network using especially rugged optical interface cable and connectors. FOX SPORTS deployed two MX240 routers in its Sydney TV center as well as the Juniper Networks Network and Security Manager solution. According to Tomkins, the EX4200 switches were the ideal solution for FOX SPORTS, offering the high availability and carrier-class reliability of modular systems with the economics and flexibility of stackable platforms.

Big on features. Small in size.

ChallengerLE offers the quality you expect from a Tecom Challenger solution in situations when space or budget is tight.

“Unlike most deployments, our switches are installed in cases that move around the country, so we needed a solution that’s very reliable—bomb proof,” said Tomkins. “When you’re in the business of live broadcasting, the availability of your network and the reliability of your network infrastructure is critical.”

With features like native ethernet, mobile app support, CBus integration, 3G communication support and management software connectivity, “The EX4200 is robust and very fault-tolerant hardware,” ChallengerLE just makes sense. Tomkins continued. “It offers a redundant power supply to

ensure we remain operational even during a power outage. Its scalability was also a draw card. It comes with 24 ports, so it can support our future requirements as we grow.”

possible memory configurations – 1500 users and 600 events, or 1000 users and 1000 events. Locks are IP54-rated, have a 2-4cm read/write distance, a privacy feature and visual indication of operational status including authorised, not authorised, out of schedule and low battery. They can be installed with a panic exit device and there are a range of fire resistant, internal and external ratings, and cylinder and handle options. SMARTair Pro offers 4 levels of control all in 1 system. It’s easy to add, delete and update user rights and users can select the most efficient way to update the access rights depending on requirements and combine this capability into their installation. “We at Brisbane Boys College take student safety and security seriously so our new security system needed to meet high standards,” says facilities manager, Geoff Bowring. “Ease of use, combined with the speed of the installation and, of course, the cost saving, sold us on SMARTair.” Doors were fitted with new SMARTair batterypowered electronic escutcheons and wall readers. System installation was quick and caused minimal disruption to building aesthetics and everyday school life. In the past Brisbane Boys College relied on a traditional masterkey system, but lost keys

often resulted in time-consuming and expensive efforts to change compromised locks. “You only have to lose a master key once, resulting in replacing all your locks, and you very quickly appreciate the convenience and cost saving that SMARTair provides,” explains Bowring. Facilities staff at Brisbane Boys College can now open doors remotely, issue smartcards instantly, and generate an audit trail for any access controlled door in the new annex. Lost keys no longer pose a security risk: they can be revoked with the click of a mouse. Staff and students just present an RFID smartcard or secure digital credential and an internal or external door opens. SMARTair is also flexible enough to expand as needed. The system has been so successful, work has already begun on the gradual replacement of mechanical keys across the entire campus. n

Hikvision 4K PTZ

Hikvision 4K PTZ Hikvision’s new 4K PTZ is a tour de force, combining all the company’s best technologies in a single camera. It melds 4K resolution with a fast F1.5 aperture 6.2-202mm (36x) optical zoom lens, integrated 200m IR, 120dB WDR, IP66 and IK10 ratings, and low light performance down to .02 lux in colour.

IKVISION has tipped all its engineering nous into the DS-2DF8836IV-AELW 4K PTZ – this camera is just bristling with tech. I got a look at the handsome new 4096 x 2160 resolution PTZ straight out of the box, having had no fine tuning from the technical team at Hikvision Australia. It would have been great to get hold of Hikvision’s 4K PTZ and undertake a full test but just mucking around in the demo room with the first unit to arrive in the country was highly instructive. At first sight it’s a nice looking camera with a stainless quick-release pendant mount and some light finning on the rear of the housing to act as a heat sink. It’s 266.6 wide x 435mm tall and heavily built in coated diecast aluminium. Weight is 8kg, which is typical for a camera of this type. The lens reflects purple and green light from different angles, indicating lens elements are multicoated against flare and internal reflections. I can see the 2 flush-mounted IR banks on either side of the camera head and there’s an integrated wiper.

The F1.5 aperture 6.2-202mm (36x) optical zoom lens has a viewing angle of 56.8 - 2.02 degrees. It’s an angle of view that sounds narrow when compared with fixed domes but it’s ideal for a camera which will be installed high and/or set back in large external industrial, commercial or public surveillance applications. Even with a 4K camera, pixel spread is going to be a factor in very big scenes – you don’t want to go too wide at the short end.

lux in colour at the widest aperture of F1.5 with AGC on – that’s very low and the camera would have gone over to night mode or activated its IR array (30,000 hour MTBF) before this light level was reached if Day/Night was set to auto. Monochrome performance is down to 0.002 lux, which is more academic than operational. WDR performance is strong at 120dB. We did not get to test the camera in the dark and I think WDR was likely at default off during our brief test. The camera supports triple streams including H.264/MJPEG video compression an H.264 encoding with Baseline/Main/High profile. There’s 128Gb storage onboard, a built in web server for remote viewing and a support for up to 8 network area storage devices. Security is handled by HTTPS encryption and IEEE 802.1X port-based network access control. There are 7 alarm inputs and 2 alarm outputs; 1 audio input and 1 audio output.

Performance is very strong. Despite the high resolution, there’s no discernible latency anywhere I can see. Hikvision calls this 4K PTZ smart for a reason – it includes all the company’s smart functions, including face detection, intrusion detection, line crossing detection, region entrance trigger, region exit trigger and audio exception, motion detection, dynamic analysis, tamper alarm, network loss, IP address conflict and storage exception. Smart tracking allows the PTZ to detect and follow a moving object and there’s also Smart Defog to handle fog, mist, mizzle, smog, smoke or dust in the sorts of very large applications a camera like this is going to inhabit.

Hikvision 4K PTZ

Jason Blowers drives the 4K PTZ.

Test driving the Hikvision DS2DF8836IV-AELW We’re running the 4K PTZ on a Hikvision DS7716NI-I4 plug and play 16-input NVR with 160Mbps of incoming bandwidth and 256 of outgoing, with support for up to 12MP resolution recording and up to 24TB (4HDD) storage. Steering things is Hikvision’s Jason Blowers. We’re peering up the street through the off-axis tinted glass of the Hikvision demo room window. Performance is very strong. Despite the high resolution, there’s no discernible latency anywhere I can see. We are reaching all the way up the hill to a gate at least 100m from the lens. It’s difficult to give an accurate sense of performance without a comparison, so I take a shot of the scene with a full frame 24MP Nikon d610 at infinity with a focal length of 100mm to give a reference point. Later in the office I’m surprised to see how much better the Hikvision looks. Matching the 200mm focal length would have been a truer comparison but the Nikon has a much higher sensor resolution. Optical zoom beats digital zoom hands-down. As soon as Blowers starts steering around the angle of view I can see that the combination of optical zoom and 4K resolution gives exceptional levels of detail all the way through the scene. Performance is so strong that we have trouble with the camera grabbing focus on individual

44 se&n

clumps of leaves in the distant foreground. It’s hard to beat 36x zoom on 4K – there’s enormous resolving power from the 36x zoom lens and the sensor resolution is always huge. Optical zoom always allows a camera to make the most of its sensor resolution but with 4K native resolution, these monumental levels of detail are available everywhere in a scene whether you are using optical or digital zoom. Colour rendition is particularly good, too. “This Hikvision 4K PTZ is a very nice camera,” Blowers says over his shoulder as he plunges into the scene. “As you can see here, its resolution is very strong. In this scene we are focusing on that entrance gate and at 100 metres we can clearly see there’s an iClass HID reader fitted. Ten years ago a camera like this was unimaginable. The quality is outstanding. “You can zoom in 36x before it goes to digital zoom and that means in a control room environment, the data is just always there,” Blowers says. “I should point out we are viewing this camera at default out of the box so there’s plenty more adjustment we can make to optimise performance for this scene, including to WDR. And while the image is very good, we are viewing the scene through a tinted window, which is reducing light levels.” n

â—? Access control

Enterprise

Enterprising Endeavour Enterprise access control is a core element of business continuity for every large business, managing and lubricating the movement of hundreds or thousands of staff nationally and globally. It’s operational importance means change is incremental but there are trends in the market that point towards the developments of the future.

46 se&n

HAT’S the future of enterprise access control likely to be? Probably more diffuse than it is now at the lower end of the market in terms of product offerings but generally speaking, the operational demands have not changed and the threat profile has increased. The core functionalities of capable access control systems are unlikely to change. What is likely to alter is the prevalence of integration with video management systems and third party sub systems, as well as the continued expansion in the ability to securely manage such systems remotely.

W

BY J O H N A D A M S

Gallagher is one of the pioneers of enterprise access control and its experience in serious applications is wide and deep. This experience is borne out in the capabilities of Gallagher’s flagship enterprise EACS, Gallagher Command Centre. Key features include support for multiple peer-to-peer servers for large enterprises, open interfaces to other systems at server and controller levels, outof-the-box authentication, encryption from server to controller to reader, and unparalleled site configuration and user privilege flexibility. “Gallagher Command Centre has a uniquely scalable architecture and commercial model, allowing small sites to expand to enterprise level with the one access control solution,” explains Gallagher’s senior product manager, Dan McVeagh, who points out a number of leading trends in enterprise access control. “Interoperability continues to be a strong trend in enterprise access control, as organisations look to gain efficiencies and greater utility from tighter integrations between their access control system and other business platforms,” says McVeigh. “Mobilisation is also a leading trend, as organisations seek to enable staff to monitor and control their access control system from any location, at any time. And an increasing focus is also being placed on enterprise access control network and data security, as greater connectivity with other systems and devices demands strong and robust security measures to avoid system compromise.” For McVeigh, the important general functionalities of any enterprise access control solution are operational. “First and foremost, an enterprise access control system must ensure its core function of controlling access at the control panel level operates reliably,” he says. “While an organisation’s scale and depth of system integration may add complexity to an enterprise access control system, this complexity must not affect the system’s operational responsiveness when it comes to protecting the organisation’s assets while maintaining business continuity at the door.” When it comes to new releases or upgrades in enterprise access control over the next 12 months, McVeigh says there are a number of new developments coming to fruition. “They start with our recent release of Gallagher Command Centre v7.50,” he says. “This version continues to expand our mobile access control capabilities, with support for our iOS and Android Command Centre Applications, and new mobile card reader support. It also supports comprehensive Active Directory cardholder synchronisation, and additional usability features to our operator-centric Command Centre UI. “Gallagher is also continuing to expand our

high security capabilities, with our support for Australian Government Type 1A intruder alarms, US Federal Government FIPS 201-2 PIV credential support, and the release of the new Gallagher HBUS End of Line Module, protecting communications between alarm sensors and the controller for high security applications.” Inner Range pushed into enterprise access control more recently but Integriti’s capability has been obvious since it was first revealed that the system’s server clustering scalability and software design had peak potentials of 16 million users and 65,000 controllers. Part of Integriti’s capability centres around a change from controller-centric programming to system-centric programming, which facilitates the seamless integration of many geographically dispersed controllers. Today, 4 years after the initial release of Integriti, Inner Range has woven the underlying technology into a recently released enterprise solution it calls Infiniti, a move that according to Vin Lopes, pitches Inner Range into the big league. “Infiniti has an enterprise architecture – it’s IP between controllers, with 8 doors in the cabinet, so if a specification says the system has got to be IP, you can use Infiniti Access Controllers (IAC’s),

This Sunshine Coast project... incorporates 18 high-level third party interfaces and takes Inner Range to another level as a manufacturer which instead of having zones, have doors – that’s the difference in architecture,” Lopes explains. According to Lopes, Inner Range and CSD will only sell Infiniti to a certain grade of integrator – that integrator will need to understand IP and the product or they’ll have trouble with installations. “Another recent development for Inner Range is Infiniti Class 5, a solution that meets the equipment requirements of AS2201.1 Class 5, allowing it to be specified for certain government applications that demand communications be encrypted from alarm sensors to keypad,” Lopes says. “Again, Infiniti Class 5 is going to be limited to a small group of highly capable integration companies. It relates to a level of trust we need to maintain with the government in terms of the integrators who have access to the technology they depend on for high security applications.” In further recent developments that expand Integriti’s capability to handle very large sites, including enterprise applications, Lopes says the Inner Range team is excited about the new web interface installed at Sunshine Coast University Hospital. The web interface virtually provides a thin client view into the Integriti server, allowing remote administration of Integriti systems via a web browser. The interface has full support for both mobile and desktop environments. “This Sunshine Coast project is quite strategic for us as it is enterprise in scale, incorporates 18 high-level third party interfaces and takes Inner Range to another level as a manufacturer,” says Lopes.

Other things you need to think about with enterprise solutions include ensuring software compatibility with today’s wide range of operating systems...

Integrators also have definite ideas about enterprise access control – not just about functionality that assists design and installation but about those pieces of system capability that best support end users operationally. Logical Services’ Brendan Bain says key considerations for end users thinking about enterprise solutions include autonomy of sites should local controllers be disconnected from any remote server or headend infrastructure. “Other things you need to think about with enterprise solutions include ensuring software compatibility with today’s wide range of operating systems including mobile platforms, software useability for the end-client and ongoing royalty payments and annual subscription costs to software manufacturers,” says Bain. What would Bain like to see more of from manufacturers in terms of new product capabilities moving forward? “Just a continual release of additional product features but with backward compatibility to a manufacturer’s own legacy equipment set,” he says. “In our case, we are excited about the Inner Range Integriti and Infiniti platforms. Inner Range has concentrated on including the best features in both hardware and software, with low installation costs and no ongoing annual subscriptions for anything. Integriti doesn’t require some form of IP-connected intelligence to provide full functionality so it is a winner for us and our clients.” n

O’Reilly’s Retreat

Life of O’Reilly’s Nestled within World Heritage listed Lamington National Park, in Australia’s Gold Coast Hinterland, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat has secured its guest room and villa accommodation with SALTO Systems access control. REILLY’S Rainforest Retreat is designed to be the perfect place to escape to relax, revive and rejuvenate. The retreat allows visitors to experience the magic of the subtropical Australian rainforest as well as fresh mountain air, crystal clear creeks and breathtaking sunsets. The spacious location comprises 66 rainforest retreat accommodation rooms and 48 self-contained luxurious eco villas. With so many rooms to manage securely, access control is a vital part of the O’Reilly’s operation. The retreat was operating a magstripe access control system but wanted to upgrade and replace this with a more modern, reliable and robust locking

O’

system that was both easy for guests and staff to use, and would not be effected by the environment surrounding the property. “All of our room locks throughout our property are exposed to the elements and our older magstripe style lock readers were failing constantly,” explains O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat manager, Jane O’Reilly. “This gave us the incentive to upgrade and since changing to SALTO we’ve not had any failure problems as the contactless readers are better able to cope with our climate.” SALTO access control is ideal for the O’Reilly’s application in multiple ways. It’s not only resistant to challenging moist environments by its nature, it’s remarkably easy to retrofit without losing core aspects of access control functionality. SALTO’S access control solutions are built around a range of battery-powered, wireless locking devices that retrofit into existing mortise locks or knobsets in minutes and function using reader technologies including smart card, contactless smart card and dual technology cards. “We’ve fitted XS4 offline escutcheons to 115 doors at the retreat, as well as a quantity of CU5000 offline controllers, via our local dealer FRANK Secure and these now give Jane, her staff and their guests a smart, modern and reliable access control system,” said Hayden Flett, business development manager at SALTO Systems Australia. “The central objective of any hotel’s security system should be to provide a convenient, comfortable, safe and secure experience for guests

O’Reilly’s Retreat

throughout their stay,” he says. “That’s what SALTO does - it takes care of property security, as well as streamlining and maximizing staff management activities. It also controls and manages who can open which doors at which times and controls rights to who goes where and when, and creates an audit trail while doing so.” SALTO locks are designed to be installed in offline applications with a full audit trail of events, as well as changes to access authorisations, are passed around the system network on-card as part of what Salto calls SVN (Salto Virtual Network). What is SVN? Well, oddly enough, it’s the credentials themselves moving around the building in the hands of cardholders. Whenever cards and locks and cards and hot-spots meet, as part of their wireless exchange, they exchange a complete update of authorisations and events going on across the network. This information funnels back to SALTO’s Pro Access management software running on a workstation, which allows administrators to manage things like access time zones, view audit trails, as well as driving anti-passback and relay management. Pro Access software can manage large numbers of door installations, and as most access related information is written on the credential, the management of the doors becomes a management of the credential. By simply updating the badge, you can change most access related authorisations of the users, including adding/deleting doors, time zones, calendars, etc. The fact SALTO is not hard wired is also beneficial for O’Reilly’s. Wireless means its less expensive to install and that there are not layers of terminations and cable runs around the site certain to oxidise in the wet rainforest climate, causing accumulations of resistance and multifarious signal failures. It’s a clever solution. In the past, if you had 100 standalone electronic locks installed in a system, each lock had to be reprogrammed manually if a cardholder was being removed. Salto’s networked locks work in a different way, with local locks and readers working in concert with hot-spot readers (SALTO WRM 9001s connected to the central controller via Ethernet). Using these hot-spots, the remote readers are able to share information about events and access control privileges with the central controller and throughout the network, with every card in the hand of every cardholder being part of the system’s distributed architecture of online and offline memory. Salto installations are a bit more complicated than the traditional standalone access control locks of yore but much less complicated than hardwired access control and they have strengths that make them vastly superior to standalone locks. What you actually get with SALTO is full function access control of all interior doors at a fraction of the cost of hard wiring and, according to SALTO, at a cost that’s only marginally more expensive than a quality

commercial mechanical masterkey system. You get all the features of a hardwired access control system with SALTO including unlimited audit trail, dynamic access profile changes, calendar and shift control, intruder alarm, automated unlock/ relock periods, automatic lost keycard cancellation, departmental operator management, ethernet connectivity of all online devices and the ability to interface with other popular access control and BMS systems. Importantly, communications between carrier and electronic lock are encrypted and secure and SALTO locks can always be opened from the inside using a single action panic feature that works in conjunction with the relevant mortise lock. SALTO locks, like the SALTO XS4 used at O’Reilly’s, have high security protection via high resistance, hardened anti-drill plates to protect wiring and reader area. Additional protection is provided by hardened axes and floating steel balls in the handle area. Other neat features include low battery power indication monitored through the SALTO Virtual Network (SVN), emergency opening via portable programming device (PPD), non-volatile memory. “What I really like about our new SALTO system is that it provides reliable, easy access to all rooms and villas throughout our property for our guests,” says O’Reilly. “Individual lock history and other security functions of the system give us excellent management information if required, and the availability of remote access troubleshooting was extremely attractive given our remote location.” n

FSH FSS1

FSH FSS1 FSH has received SCEC approval (Security Level 4) for its FSS1 high security door monitoring sensor, which has been designed and manufactured in Australia for military, correctional and high security applications. SS1 is a big deal for FSH and for the entire high security end of the access control and intrusion detection market, which has been waiting for a solution of this calibre since the Jackson Report found flaws in the security performance of existing high security door monitoring devices. The FSH sensor is available in flush or surface mount variations and replaces traditional high security magnetic balanced reed switches using a Hall Effect sensor and programmable magnetic plate combination that allows the unit to be re-calibrated to circumvent door drop, which would otherwise lead to replacement of sensors or re-hanging of doors. FSH’s FSS1 was developed and is manufactured and programmed in Australia to the highest

F

security standards. This is important for many high security applications. The sensor supports the integration of encryption modules and the FSS1-S and S-NC versions include PCB slots for conduit entry reversal, a cast dimple for drilling cable entry, calibration mode selector and a ½-inch pipe thread compatible for existing installations. There are cover removal tamper switches and a magnet array plate. The FSSI-F version has a calibration/mode selector, cover removal for tamper switches, surface removal tamper switch and a magnet array plate. “The FSS1 High Security Door Monitoring Sensor is the first commercially available active device of its kind with patents granted worldwide,” says FSH’s Marc Bindner. “FSS1 is a quantum leap in door position monitoring, dispensing with the traditional reed switch technology and replacing it with a microprocessor and Hall Effect sensors combination.” The new sensor was developed over a period of 3 years by the FSH engineering team specifically for high security applications in government, correctional and military installations. It’s a clever piece of design that came about through FSH electronic engineer, Mark Aylesbury’s familiarity with the Hall Effect – the propagation of electrical waves outside their conductors – and exploits the electromagnetic

BY J O H N A D A M S

properties of magnets to shape the waveform. To that end the FSS1 incorporates 7 magnetic Hall Effect sensors that detect a unique magnetic footprint from an array of 8 magnets on a magnetic face plate. One of the sensors is used to detect the position of the magnetic face plate in relation to the device, while the other 6 sensors are used to determine the polarity size, strength and position of the magnets on the unique magnetic face plate in relation to the programmed pattern. Taken as a whole, this technology and other characteristics give FSS1 highly sophisticated anti-tamper facilities that are virtually impossible to breach. There are 3 versions – the FSS1-S surface mount conduit version, the FSS1-S-NC surface mount no conduit version and the FSS1-F flush mount morticed version. The sensor has a flexible 10-30V DC input requirement and current consumption is a meagre 75mA. Alarm and tamper contacts are NC and NO. Security tamper proof level is SL4, which is the highest SCEC rating. A particularly strong feature of the FSS1 is its ability to manage door gaps from 1-7mm without the need to replace or re-fit door hardware. This means the sensor can simply be recalibrated to handle changes to door gaps. EOL capability includes space for 1 or 2 modules and there’s IP67 rating against dust and moisture ingress. The FSS1-S conduit version

FSS1 is a quantum leap in door position monitoring, dispensing with the traditional reed switch technology and replacing it with a microprocessor and Hall Effect sensors combination. and no conduit versions have dimensions of 75mm long, 34mm high and 35mm deep; while the FSS1-F version is 110mm long, 32mm deep and 35mm wide. The surface mount versions have 2 tamper switches to detect unauthorised removal of the cover, while the flush mount version has a separate tamper switch that detects removal of the device from the door frame in which it’s mounted. The sensors are beautifully fabricated and are comparatively discrete, particularly the flush mount version, which can’t be seen when a door is closed. “What’s most important is that FSS1 is a virtually tamperproof solution,” says Bindner. “It uses a smart combination of Hall Effect sensors and a unique magnetic array plate allowing the unit to be recalibrated in case of door drop. The FSH sensor is available in flush or surface mount, is developed, manufactured and programmed in Australia to the highest security standards and it has SCEC-approval to SL4.” n

Product Q&A Pota Kanavaros

Is the Market Ready for XSaaS? For years, companies such as Microsoft, Adobe, and Oracle have deployed flexible buying models, either offering XaaS as a cloud-enabled service, or as a traditional on-premises installation with monthly or annual renewals. XaaS might have taken a little longer to reach the physical security industry but wider adoption of this trend is inevitable.

56 se&n

n this short Q&A, Pota Kanavaros, product marketing manager at Genetec, explains what the new ownership model is about, why Genetec thinks the market is primed for its new Security Center Subscription offering, and what types of installations and clients are already taking advantage of the service.

I

Q: Exactly what is Security Center Subscription? And is the market ready for it? PK: As a company, we have always been huge proponents of giving our customers greater choice. It started with offering an open architecture video management system, Omnicast, back when closed architecture analogue systems were king. Today, it extends into the subscription-based model for our unified security platform, Security Center. The reality is, even today, customers want more options, and their buying behaviours are shifting towards solutions that provide more predictable budgets and lower upfront costs. Those preferences are what motivated us to offer Security Center Subscription. The new model gives clients access to the on-premises Security Center system with a term contract that includes updates, support and trials to cloud services. While our perpetual license model for Security Center is always available, some customers might prefer to make monthly or annual payments for the duration they require the security system. And that’s what it is all about — letting our customer decide what is best for their organisation. Q: What has the response been from the industry so far? PK: The industry as a whole is paying attention, and some clients and integrators are moving ahead with implementations. For many clients, the most attractive aspect of Security Center Subscription is the reduced upfront costs. They’re excited at the prospect of moving expenses from capital budgets to operational budgets, as well as having support and updates bundled into the price. There can be a lot of the headaches, expense and downtime associated with large-scale software updates, usually performed by the IT department. Security Center Subscription ensures that the client is always running the latest software version, with immediate patches and updates sent via intuitive delivery mechanisms. Version numbers become almost transparent, as Genetec is responsible for delivering upgrades,

fixes and support—all bundled into the subscription price. Q: What industries are showing the most interest in subscription? Where have you had success? PK: Retail stores and city entities have been quick to show interest in the flexible ownership model. Their installations normally include many small and distributed sites, so purchasing by subscription is an option that allows them to expand operations and add cameras without having to source big budgets. The health and fitness club industry is a niche market that seems to be a great fit for the pay-as-you-go offering as well. Fitness clubs and gyms tend to lease their exercise equipment, so leasing security systems on a monthly basis fits with their existing payment structure. Seasonal businesses are another great fit for Security Center Subscription. Waterparks, ski hills, or any outdoor activity centres need security systems but are only open 50 per cent of the year. Security Center Subscription is a more affordable option that offers the ability to have 100 per cent of cameras online during peak season, and a scaled down number of cameras during the off-season. Temporary events such as concerts, marathons or parades would benefit in the same way. Property management companies can also benefit from this new ownership model because managing security is built-in to their agreement. Security Center Subscription offers a no-hassle, affordable option which can be bundled into operational expenses. Finally, any client looking to swap out or upgrade existing security management software could find this subscription service very interesting. With Security Center Subscription, the client could easily move to a new video management system with a monthly term commitment.

Q: How does Security Center Subscription differ from cloud services? PK: Security Center Subscription should not be confused with a cloud-based solution. Security Center Subscription is server-based, so it’s installed on local servers at the customer’s site. However, as part of the subscription payment, we are offering subscribers no risk trials of Security Center Cloud services. If required, clients can use our cloud services to expand on-premises video surveillance systems or easily enhance storage capacity, without the need for additional on-site servers. Q: Is there an installation size that is suitable for Security Center Subscriptions? PK: No, Security Center Subscription can accommodate clients with 30 cameras, 260 cameras or 1000 cameras, and beyond. We do, however, offer an edition called Security Center Compact, which is ideally suited for customers who have less than 25 cameras. Security Center Compact is quick to set up, requires no training for users and extends powerful surveillance at an affordable price point to clients with basic requirements. Q: Is a shift to pay as you go inevitable? PK: We may be one of the first to offer a subscription model to the security industry, but pay-as-you-go has been around for a while. There is an inevitable shift happening, and while there is still some market education required, customers are ready to subscribe to choice. We will be featuring Security Center Subscription at the upcoming ASIAL 2016 Security Exhibition & Conference in Melbourne Australia from 20-22 July, 2016. Guests are welcome to stop by our booth #L20 for a demo or ask our local representatives any questions about our subscription service. n

Apple watch running alarm.com app

Apple Sends SOS Could Apple’s addition of an SOS feature to its Apple Watch take PERS mainstream and expand the nature of alarm monitoring from protecting against property intrusion to protecting against personal emergency? Possibly. But it would have to appeal to a younger generation than the bulk of current PERS users.

BY J O H N A D A M S

PPLE has announced a new SOS feature for Apple Watch watchOS 3 at its developer conference recently. A wearer presses and holds the side button under the crown and an emergency call goes out after a countdown from 3. The watch will notify police in the country the wearer is located via a paired iPhone or directly via an available Wi-Fi network. The SOS will also send a wearer’s location to registered emergency contacts, as well as displaying a wearer’s medical ID, age, name, date of birth, medical conditions and other relevant information for the use of emergency responders. There are negatives and positives to the PERS capabilities of the Apple Watch. You need a paired iPhone or Wi-Fi network for a start and battery life is lower than typical PERS devices. Cost for the Apple Watch and iPhone is higher, too. Of course, being paired with an iPhone means Apple’s PERS capability is not locked to a home – the call goes through the phone when you’re out of the house. And the system is clever enough to contact relevant authorities in whichever country you happen to be, allowing immediate communication with emergency services. At the conference, Apple’s VP of technology Kevin Lynch told developers that wearers “might be having a medical emergency, or a safety situation and we’re going to be able to help with that”. From the point of view of Apple, which also released new smart home connectivity with watchOS 3, incorporating PERS gives wearers a new and compelling reason to buy and wear their Apple Watch. But there are complexities from an operational point of view that are likely to impact on performance. For a start, there are accuracy problems with location technology in mobile and fixed Wi-Fi devices. These are likely to impact on performance. Then there are issue of

A

response and false alarms to deal with. For monitoring people, the wider uptake of PERS technology could be a boon if it promoted a new layer of monitoring for personal emergency response. But it’s still tough to see PERS gaining traction outside of the healthcare market, which is supported by a large and growing number of older folks for whom PERS gives them the freedom to live alone with the ability to call for help if they need it. It seems there’s a wider market for PERS solutions based on the latest technology that few in the secuirty market are seriously targeting. Having said this, app-based solutions from providers like SmartTek Systems (available in Australia from OnWatch), are designed to offer a range of personal-use PERS solutions that are deployed on mobile devices. There’s SmartAlert, a panic, safety, and mobile personal emergency response system (mPERS), and SmartGuard, which is designed to give families peace-ofmind by providing optional location information about family members. “The landscape of the alarm industry is changing not just in the US but internationally,” said SmartTek co-founder and former Fire Burglary Instruments president, Barry Schweiger recently. “By extending protection services to subscribers and their families when they are out of their homes, at school, work or out enjoying themselves, security companies can practically guarantee increased RMR and lowered attrition rates. We see this as a very strong closing tool for dealers.” For instance, SmartTek’s Apps eliminate the need to purchase any additional equipment, and there are no additional cellular charges to the central station, dealer or subscriber. Dealers simply have their subscribers sign up, download and install the app on their iPhone or Android smartphone and they are immediately protected.

The landscape of the alarm industry is changing not just in the US but internationally Old School PERS It’s worth noting the generally simple nature of most PERS systems – they are old tech. Emergency calls are one-button DTMF at the pendant, sometimes without a pendant microphone - comms is by duplex telephone at the controller. There’s no video surveillance component and as mentioned earlier, there’s no ability to provide an exact location in the event of emergency outside the home. Many systems have Tunstall Fall Sensor capability but that’s about the height of their sophistication. More expensive GPS-based solutions like Safe2Walk are being marketed to Alzheimer’s patients but this seems a small market, given the potential of GPS tracking to bring PERS to a much wider customer base. Their static technology means PERS solutions limit themselves to supporting the elderly in relatively fixed environments. A typical aged care monitoring solution is generally a number of wrist or necklace pendants that communicate by wireless (around the 900MHz range), with a controller in a central location in the home. The PERS controller communicates with a monitoring facility via phone line that’s monitored by any one of a number of medical monitoring organisations. While a small number of security monitoring stations get involved in this area, most PERS providers specialise in personal emergency response. This is true of the UK and the USA, as well as Australia. Of course, it’s unlikely healthcare monitoring solutions are going to appeal to kids, teenagers or active adults but it’s a fact that modern technology has reached a point where

We believe other markets for the short-range pendant could include younger stay-at-home families where accidents happen with children. it facilitates a sort of global man-down/ emergency call solution and Apple Watch SOS suggests the interest in this is likely to grow. Given the dominance of healthcare providers in the personal emergency response market segment, monitoring companies need a new pitch if they are to establish themselves in PERS. Quality security monitoring centres have a higher level of tech than healthcare

monitoring companies, as well as more secure facilities that meet objective industry standards, but it’s hard not to feel this is an area our monitoring providers should have a larger slice of. “Much of that outdated PERS technology is still offered today to reach a very narrow market of infirmed,” Lee Jones, owner of Support Services Group told an SSN poll recently. “We believe other markets for the short-range pendant could include younger stay-athome families where accidents happen with children.” According to Jones, long-range cell pendants offer “threat mitigation for anyone of any age, including schoolchildren … away from their safe haven.”

Meanwhile Blane Comeaux, vice president of Acadian Monitoring Services says that in addition to traditional PERS clientele, his company caters to “an extremely vibrant group of PERS customers who are younger, very active, technology-savvy and carry a mobile PERS with a GPS.” Is it possible a more pervasive mobile device like Apple Watch could provide impetus to an expanding PERS market in a less certain world, a market security monitoring companies are well placed to tap into? While the answer is uncertain, wearable technology and monitoring infrastructure are perfectly capable of meeting the changing needs of a growing PERS market. n

Synology

VisualStation VS360HD Synology’s VS360HD VisualStation is designed to replace the workstation in an IP surveillance solution, providing full management and control of connected cameras from any connected monitor on network fringes. The unit is especially well adapted to supporting retail and reception applications. YNOLOGY is well known as a manufacturer of digital storage solutions but the company also makes Surveillance Station software, which turns its network area storage devices into capable video surveillance solutions. Of course, using a NAS to handle some of the tasks of an NVR isn’t always easy and it relies on workstations across the network to handle the labour of live monitoring. And this is where our story begins. In a single sentence, Synology’s nifty little VisualStation VS360HD is designed to support

S

Surveillance Station V7 or higher (we are using 7.2), when paired with a Synology NAS, to give centralised storage with remote management and edge storage, at locations where a user may not have space, funds, a suitably clean environment, or the requirement for a fully loaded workstation. You could use VS360HD in a network room during system programming, you could install it in a guardhouse or reception station where you did not want the cost, risk or distraction of a workstation. You might locate VS360HD in an emergency command centre away from main buildings and infrastructure. Or you could install VS360HD in a dusty and challenging industrial environment – some torturously hot place no workstation could possibly survive. This unit is silly discreet – it’s only 32mm x 130m by 130m and weighs just 300 grams, so you can hide it anywhere that’s convenient. The VS360HD is a tough puppy. The ribbed fan-less design means greater longevity and excellent resistance to dust – heat resistance is 50C – that’s extreme. Being compact and tough makes the VS360HD very portable – security managers could carry it in pockets, briefcases or emergency packs and power it up anywhere a fully functional

workstation might suddenly need to be. All that’s required to create an operator’s workstation is a local monitor (or TV) and a network connection.

Axis Zipstream shaving crazy low bitrate in static scene.

Features of the VisualStation VS360HD Synology’s neat little VS360HD is a rather hard solution to categorise if you approach it from a strictly IP CCTV mindset. It’s not a hub, not a router, not a NAS and not an NVR. Synology describes the unit as a companion. That anthropomorphic descriptor simultaneously does and doesn’t feel right from a technical standpoint. Instead, I think the way to best understand this unit is as a discreet, rugged and remote front-end for any Synology NAS running a Surveillance Station 7 back-end. Typically, with such NAS-based VMS solutions, you need a linked workstation with an appropriate video card to run the show by providing a client interface. What the VS360HD does when linked with a Synology NAS running Surveillance Station 7.0 is replace that PC in your networked CCTV application without cutting back on operational capability. The unit ports to a network on which the NAS resides and supports a local monitor or TV connected directly via HDMI or VGA ports, allowing the viewing of live feeds and recording images and image streams. Before we take a test drive, let’s quickly run through the specifications of this solution. The VS360HD outputs video to VGA and HDMI ports at 1080p and there’s an audio input and an audio output. There are 2 USB 2.0 ports and one USB 3.0 (5Gbps) ports, which allow connection of mouse,

keyboard, joystick and insertion of thumb drives. There’s also an RJ-45 1GB LAN port. Power is AC via an adaptor and power draw is tiny – about 3.6W on idle and around 4.8W at full load. Operating temperature tolerance is strong at -20 to 50C and there’s a 3-year conditional warranty. There’s a mounting kit that allows the VS360HD to be fitted to VESA-compliant monitors – that means you can tuck the unit up out of sight, making for a tidy and discrete solution. Video compression formats supported include MJPEG, MPEG-4 and H.264, while audio codecs include PCM, ADPCM, G711, G726, AMR and AAC. Unsurprisingly for a unit of this size, there are performance variables that depend on camera numbers. Total frames per second in H.264 are

Synology Atom processor paired with 1GB of memory – plenty to handle a single IP camera. The DS710+ came with Surveillance Station 6 support for up to 16 IP cameras and we upgrade this software to the latest version during the VS360HD review process.

Driving the system

360ips at 720p (1270 x 720) for 36 channels. If you go for 1080p image streams (1920 x 1080p) then you get support for 16 cameras. With 3MP (2048 x 1536) you can drive 6 cameras and it drops down to 1 camera at 5MP (2591 x 1944). The parameters are different for less streamlined MJPEG streams, as you’d expect. The unit employs a system on a chip (SoC) architecture. What this comprises is an IC that combines everything into a single processor. And that means everything digital, analogue, hybrid, wireless – whatever. In this case, the SoC functions certainly include the video codec. SoC layouts are lower cost but there’s obviously going to be a performance penalty. Synology doesn’t reveal the specs of the VS360HD processor but it may be similar to the company’s economy DS115j NAS, which features Marvell’s Armada 370 SoC jogging along at a relaxed 800MHz. In the DS115j, this singlecore Arm v7 processor offers a cache of 256kb and 256kb of DDR3 system memory – not much to come and go on but enough. As we know from the EDS14, it’s possible to wring 1.2Ghz out of the Armada 370 but Synology appears happy to spec the SoC in the DS115j for cool running and low current draw. Instructively, the VS360HD runs way cooler than the EDS14 – it’s barely warm to the touch. Low operating temperature means long life. The takeaway from this possible spec is that the VS360HD’s modest RAM will see it run slower than Synology’s lower-end NAS units like the 4 or 9-input NVR216, despite its ability to deliver 36 video inputs to a local monitor. That doesn’t signify as a loss of capability for many applications, however. The whole concept of the VS360HD is an inexpensive, discreet, low current device that considerably expands operational access to a Synology surveillance network. The NAS we are testing the unit with is SEN’s Synology DS710+ which is used to handle typical storage duties at our office. The DS710+ is a couple of year’s old now, but the fact it’s a legacy unit gives our test more of a real world integration feel. The logical pairing with VS360HD is the newer DS415+ but performance with the older NAS is not likely to be an issue in this test. The 710+ features a reasonably snappy 1.67GHz Intel

Synology NAS.

Performance through VisualStation is good – it’s slightly softer than the images dished up by the Dell 9020 running Axis camera browser and there’s slightly more latency, too.

Giving me a hand with setup is CSD’s Justin Hallarsis and the time consuming part is handling the upgrade of software to the NAS and VisualStation unit. This shouldn’t be taken to mean the upgrade is hard. The process of working out the existing software in the different units and upgrading it to the latest SS7.2 versions using appropriate formats is just too much for me. The upgrade is a necessary process because our brownfield NAS is running SS6 and I’ve had the VS360HD waiting to test for months and there have been software upgrades since it arrived on my desk. In terms of topology, the existing DS710+ is already resident on the network and we simply add the VS360HD to our Netgear switch and then pair it with the NAS. There’s currently an Axis M1125 camera on the network being used for a lens test of Fujinon’s 4.19mm varifocal, so we use this camera for the test. As well as being connected to SEN’s Gigabit switch, the VS360HD is also hooked up via HDMI to our standard BENQ 1080p test monitor. All very straightforward. If you’re familiar with it, the process of searching for new cameras is very easy but I flounder around getting lost the first time. As part of the process, you hop into the NAS to search for cameras, and once this is done, you can access the cameras on the VS360HD. As well as offering excellent networking capability for newbies, Axis is a Synology partner so it’s all too easy. And making our setup simpler, SS7.2 has Auto-Layout, which allows Live View to automatically adjust to the number of video streams displayed. We only have the one camera, so things stay simple. For multiserver deployments with hundreds of cameras, Live View automatically adjusts to best configuration to handle the number of cameras being displayed. When connected with I/O modules, Surveillance Station can serve as the central hub of various automation devices such as LED lights, electromagnetic locks, motion detectors, and more. Meanwhile, e-Maps allow operators to quickly identify a device’s location on the map when it sends an alert. There are different icons for IP cameras, fisheye cameras, I/O modules and door controllers. Further, icon sizes can be adjusted on e-Map and device names can be hidden. We don’t have I/O modules connected and don’t use eMaps for this basic application but it’s nice to know the functionality is there. When you open the VSD360HD – I just select the HDMI input and click go - you’re immediately at Live View, which is right where you want to be. The interface of VS360HD is typical Synology – it’s pared back and very intuitive – there’s nothing complicated going on here (server-based Synology CMS is

Synology

available for users with more complicated solutions). And with variables like camera settings handled via camera browser before or after addition to Live View, there’s no need for multiple levels of complication. Once the VS360HD is paired with our Synology NAS now running Surveillance Station 7.2, it becomes a solution for monitoring live feeds and viewing recordings, as well as taking snapshots and steering camera views. The way recording works is that video footage is stored on the NAS, while screenshots and stills can be archived to an external USB drive. You can employ a mouse, a keyboard or a joystick to operate cameras with PTZ control and there’s very easy digital zoom. You just place the cursor on the tile you want to zoom in or out of and roll the mouse wheel. With SS7.2, there’s a command line at the top left with Live View, Timeline, Recording and Log options and you simply click on the heading and pop out at the functionality. Live View is what you’d expect – you can select the display layout you want – 4-screen or full frame, as well as driving digital and audio outputs, and undertake patrols. There’s a slider (or use mouse wheel) for digital zoom as well as audio volume. Timeline is simple, too. You select one of the connected cameras and the related footage can be found by pulling a vertical slider. Together, the Live View, Timeline and Recording functions allow browsing and export of video clips and snapshots via the USB 3.0 port. When you get into recordings, a list of events comes up with camera name and date and you just click to action the recording player. Hopping in and out of this list I can see once again that Axis Zipstream is a very skinny compression format, even at the least compressive setting, and that the M1125 and the Fujinon 4.1-9mm varifocal are making short work of the wee hours of the morning, staying in colour very happily. I note that wherever you are in the system – live view or viewing recordings on the player - it’s always possible to grab a snapshot. Performance through VisualStation is good – it’s slightly softer than the images dished up by the Dell 9020 running Axis camera browser and there’s slightly more latency, too. I get less than 200th of a second latency via the Axis browser/Dell combo but it’s more like 400ths of a second through the VS360HD – this may relate to the integrated video codec in the SoC. The slight increase in softness in the display image impacts on digital zoom but given the task of this unit is to extend management and control of surveillance cameras to network fringes, that’s a price many users are going to decide is worth paying. With Auto-Layout taking care of setup, you just pull a camera from the 4-camera list to one of the quad screen’s tiles. From there you double click to full screen, double click to split screen, and mouse roll to zoom in and out. Along with driving PTZs through the digital PTZ control, something else it’s possible to do is grab particular camera angles and save them

as a group to form a Patrol cycle or alternatively, program in presets. Optimized Live View layouts are fully customizable with a quick drag-and-drop from the camera list – all very simple. And while I always prefer snapshot to be accessed via a right click, I find it easy enough to find the camera icon snapshot bottom left of the viewing screen that appears whenever you twitch the mouse, then disappears a few moments later. Synology’s Surveillance Station 7.2 is different from Surveillance Station 6, which once you burrowed into it was quite traditional in nature. SS7.2 has more functionality but it’s delivered in a simplified way, with the use of setup and configuration automation. It’s likely this change allows the new interface to better meet the needs of SME customers who may not be familiar with traditional VMS interfaces. There certainly are new features, including QuickConnect and HTTPs support, making for quick access to remote servers with no need to fuss over network config or dynamic IP addresses. Because SS7.2 is integrated to CMS, you can also bind your recording servers to the host server without network knowledge. To undertake the process, you just enter your QuickConnect ID to establish connection – meanwhile, HTTPs support means Internet comms remain private and secure. There’s also a new notification system that combines similar notifications so as to streamline alerts. And SS7.2 has an adjustable keyframe interval - less time between key frames increases stream stability and quality, while increasing the interval reduces bandwidth consumption. It’s a nice piece of control to have. Synology’s VS360HD is an interesting addition to the Synology lineup. Once you get your head around the VS360HD, it suddenly becomes clear this rugged little device is capable of considerably enhancing Synology’s NAS-based surveillance solutions. From an operational perspective, the VS360HD adds value not by delivering epic levels of raw performance but by quietly carrying core system functionality out of the control room and deep into hostile territory. n

Features of Synology VS360HD include: l Live View/Recording Playback l Snapshot Support l eMap Support l PTZ Control/Patrol l Log Viewer l Compact, fanless and silent l Industrial-level thermal endurance l 1 Gigabit ports, 1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 l Synology Surveillance Station 7.2 l Works with thousands of IP cameras

INTEGRITY Locksmiths and Security is located in a business complex on one of Sydney’s busiest roads, in the centre of the city’s metropolitan area. Experienced in many aspects of security, including locksmithing, intrusion, access and CCTV, the team was recently asked to provide CCTV for the complex its office is situated in. The client’s brief focused on HD video footage, a video storage and management system with a small footprint, the ability to read licence plates from entering and leaving vehicles, and clear video footage of key areas, day and night. The critical areas identified for surveillance comprised the main entry gate, the front of the complex alongside Victoria Road, the 60-metre

Integrity chose Bosch cameras, ranging from 720p FLEXIDOME IP cameras through to 1080p DINION IP and DINION IP starlight cameras, as well as a Dinion IP Starlight 8000 camera to provide an overview of the rear carpark. The cameras and a Bosch DIVAR IP 3000 recorder running the Bosch BVMS system, were chosen due to prior product experience and trust of their performance. Having designed and installed the system, Integrity didn’t have long to wait before it proved its worth – not only to complex management but to the whole Integrity team. Just a couple of days after commissioning, a car thief was caught in the act on multiple high resolution video streams, giving the Integrity technical team the perfect of opportunity to assess just how well its new system met operational requirements.

Suspect scouting the parking area and vehicles.

Caught in the act with irrefutable footage According to Integrity Locksmiths and Security technical manager, Rob Harding, the suspect did not time his activities well. The CCTV system was installed just a few days prior to his excursion onto the premises. The high positioning of the cameras could have also contributed to the suspect’s lack of awareness of CCTV camera presence. Clear video footage showed the suspect scouting the car park area and looking into cars, then breaking into a vehicle owned by Integrity Locksmiths and Security, as seen in images A, B, and C. A boom gate camera picked up the intruder talking to a person walking through the complex and then caught him leaving the complex via Victoria Rd. Integrity Locksmiths and Security provided the video footage to NSW Police on a USB thumb drive with the Bosch VMS Archive Player included for quick and easy review on any Windows PC. According to Harding, police were very impressed with the quality of the video and commented on the clarity of the images. Utilizing these images they were able to apprehend, build a case against, and charge the suspect. n

Help desk ■ Below are the approximate recommendations for rest times (complete rest, that is) between sets according to your goal, per the National Streng th and Conditioning Association (NSCA). *Note that since fat loss depends primarily on diet, there is no official rest-period prescription for it, although we feel that both short and long rests work, depending on the program.

Q: We were interested to see the face recognition performance of the 15-50mm Fujinon lens at 50mm and 15m on SEN’s website. Would you advocate use of the longer end of a varifocal lens given an appropriate mounting point, over situating the lens closer, when it comes to facial ID? A: We’d like to point out at the start that IVA makers like Cognitec will have their own parameters when it comes to camera set-up for high security IVA applications like face recognition. Generally speaking, however, a shorter focal length, even if installed closer, is likely to include multiple so-called ‘crying babies’ - distracting visual noises that are almost impossible for operators to entirely ignore. For IVA purposes, while the background will be ignored by software algorithms, the wider view may also have fewer pixels of face to recognise. Certainly, we like longer focal lengths for faces. While there may be slight pin cushion distortion, the image is likely to be flatter than a wide view, with less lengthening or widening of facial features to impact on facial measurements. Other things to consider with very long focal lengths include the possibility that because the scene

has been collapsed, line of sight may be more easily obstructed by passers-by, vehicles or moving foliage. You also need to consider operational requirements. If the ID is made in a tightly set location – for instance, the person must stand on a particular spot – focal length can be longer and angle of view tighter. But if the person is approaching a chokepoint several metres wide, focal length will need to come back a little wider. Bear in mind that aperture will be reduced with a longer focal length – it may not seem a big deal with fast CCTV lenses but the loss of a whole F stop at night means 10 lux ambient becomes 5 lux at the sensor. Finally, the longer the focal length, the more important a stable fixing point becomes. Wall mount over pole mount if you can and keep bracket arms compact and a fixing points tight. Q: Would you recommend not using wide angle lenses in many security surveillance applications? What are the advantages and disadvantages of wide angle lenses? A: Disadvantages of wide angle lenses can include chromatic aberrations, vignetting, excessive barrel distortion and corner softness. And if you need identification, then you need the lens very, very close to the subject. Given the challenges of wide angle views, we’d recommend you cover your operational target area fully but nothing more. For instance, a 130-degree

angle of view might be wonderfully dramatic and include huge amounts of detail, but if a large part of that detail includes the walls of adjacent buildings, the foliage of street trees and tens of degrees of empty sky, you’re better to opt for a narrower field of view with a higher concentration of pixels. Wide angle lenses are great for some video surveillance applications but they can be a double edged sword. For instance, with a wide lens the hyperfocal distance is only going to be a metre or so, meaning almost everything in the scene is in focus – this can be advantageous or distracting for operators in live applications. And while scenes are wide and deep, pixel spread will ensure those scene elements deeper in, as well as those objects on the edges where image quality is lowest, are going to be too soft to secure criminal convictions. Something else that needs to be managed with a wide angle view is perspective distortion. When everything in a very wide, very deep scene is in focus, it can be challenging to ascertain a scene’s context as an operator – depth of field and distance between objects become harder to judge. When commissioning cameras with wide angle views, try to include a fixed foreground element within the first 5 metres as a DoF reference – for instance, a utility pole in a shopping mall. A particular advantage of wide angle lenses is that they have relatively short throws –

this means that remote autofocus is faster. This will apply to wider angle PTZs, as well as remote autofocus cameras fitted with wider motorised zooms. The wider the wide end and the wider the top end, the faster focus will be, a factor that will be an advantage in applications where fixed cameras are used to track events in real time. We’ve experienced some longer lenses that while they allowed remote recommissioning of focal length were far too slow to be of benefit for live monitoring applications. There’s a reason wide angle lenses are among the most expensive lenses photographers can buy – it’s very difficult to design a wide angle lens that offers a sweeping angle of view, yet minimises barrel distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting. There is a sweet spot with full frame DSLR lenses where you get the widest views with the least distortion – that’s a focal length of 20mm. There’s a sweet spot for wide angle CCTV lenses, too, whether they be wide primes (fixed focal length) or wide varifocal lenses, and you should play around until you find that sweet spot during commissioning. For 1/3inch cameras fitted with typical 3-10mm varifocal lenses, the sweet spot is around 5mm – the middle of the range. As we often point out, lens choice needs to be given serious consideration and different angles of view should overlap or complement each other around a target area to provide the best operational outcomes. For instance, a high resolution camera (4K/5MP) will offer excellent performance with a lens offering a 100-degree field of view, while lower resolution sensors will perform superbly with narrower fields of view – the equivalent of 10-15mm focal length with a 1080p 1/3-inch sensor will give great results with faces and plates on the street. For all their importance to CCTV camera performance, it’s notoriously difficult to get a sense of CCTV lens performance. DSLR users can turn to sources like DXOMark, as well as reviews by the likes of Bjorn Rorslett and Tom Hogan. Whole communities have argued in print and online for decades over the performance of still camera lenses. Conversely, most CCTV lenses today are made and designed by nobody knows who, with an eye on nothing but price. Installers, integrators, consultants and end users should bear in mind that with cameras of similar quality and identical settings, lens performance will represent the difference.

A powerful IR equipped PTZ

Q: There’s a lot of interest in very low light cameras at the moment and less interest in IR – why do you think this is? A: Manufacturers lend IR support to compact cameras that aren’t designed to be great in low light. Viewing a camera with modest low light performance tipping over into IR early supports the human tendency to the composition fallacy - that low cost and low performance integrated IR cameras are indicative of the way all IR cameras function. Further, integrated IR’s strength is confirming intrusion, not giving court admissible faces or colours, and integrated IR tends to flare. This doesn’t mean there are not some very capable integrated IR cameras on the market but end users are less enamoured of integrated IR than they used to be. External IR luminaries are a different cup of tea and properly installed they are exceptionally powerful, giving great contrast and sharpness. There is a point in low light where IR is king. It’s probably below 2-lux at the lens. You should do testing of your own to find the best IR performance – it varies considerably. Q: Most the domestic installers I know use wireless alarm systems but personally, I find they can have more problems than hardwired. The difficulty is convincing users that the additional installation cost is worth paying. What is SEN’s opinion on wired and hardwired? A: This is something there’s a lot of chat about lately and it comes down to

operational requirements, site size and user choice. A government user might want Class 5 wired sensors while a home might be better off with wireless. At the sharp end, wireless and hardwired sensors generally have the same sensing capability. Any issues are likely to come down to communications failures from sensor to controller or poor insulation. For long term robustness in compact spaces, we like hard wiring and in some cases might go with fewer hardwired sensors centralised around a controller or remote I/O for the same price as a more comprehensive wireless system. But having said this, we’d still want a wireless module to handle reed and vibration switches, and to simplify installations, especially on bigger sites. Wireless certainly means you get more security system for the same money – more devices giving more coverage. That applies doubly to more complicated security and home automation solutions. The latest quality wireless solutions are very reliable but in some cases end users do have bad experiences with battery life. A global battery life of 5 years would be great but battery life can be much shorter than this, particularly for bigger devices like wireless internal and external sirens. Each battery fail means a call-out cost for replacement. Of course, this can be an advantage for the installer, who gets recurring revenue and the opportunity for a positive touch with the client that might allow an upsell of controller, or the addition of a remote app. n
