SECURITY ELECTRONICS…& NETWORKS EN’S title has never made more sense than it does S today, as we see a continuing push towards what is going to be a revolution in networking. One of the challenges of networking is working out just what developments we are going to see and when. Regardless of these questions, the future depends on the capacity of networks to carry our data – particularly bandwidth heavy video – and to deliver affordable digitised spaces. There’s considerable speculation over 5G as a pervasive networking technology but there’s uncertainty over exactly what 5G will turn out to be. Importantly, though, 5G is not the only point of interest in the networking conversation. There’s plenty more coming through – technologies like SD-WAN and Wi-Fi 6 may not have the glamour of 5G but they are going to hit much sooner, and you’ll know when they do. Networking is expensive and development is slow – no one moves without a good reason. Growing drivers of investment in networks are an increased demand for operational efficiency and performance, but it’s a mistake not to think cost reduction isn’t part of this, too. For larger organisations, the shift towards cloud also makes sense from the point of view of cyber security – it’s much easier to apply security protocols to a single cloud than to multiple silos, each independently managed and multifariously vulnerable. While all eyes are on 5G, perhaps the networking technology that will have the greatest immediate impact on electronic security solutions will be Wi-Fi 6 or 802.11ax. This Wi-Fi upgrade offers a number of advantages including higher speed, greater efficiency and the potential for enhancements in the 6GHz band. Wi-Fi 6 has certain core strengths that mean more devices can

be supported in a given space. The way this works is that subchannels use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access so each Wi-Fi access point can talk to more devices at once. Physically MIMO—Multiple In/ Multiple Out means multiple antennas – it’s a distinct look – multiple antennas is what lets a router talk to multiple devices at the same time. Using enhanced data encoding and creating wireless subchannels, Wi-Fi 6 can also cram more data onto the same waves and it’s 40 per cent more efficient than current technology. There’s also enhanced penetration of solid barriers and a target wake time feature that means increased battery life for smart management devices and smart sensors, too. Something else that’s going to feed into more efficient networks is machine learning, which is able to react to health changes across a network to maintain maximum efficiency. The ability to analyse network telemetry in real time to discover patterns of usage, bottlenecks, developing security threats, vulnerabilities and unexpected network behaviours is a very big deal. Software-defined networking, or SDWAN, is another building trend that’s going to change the way networks are managed, making them more efficient and less expensive to set up and manage. SD-WAN empowers networks to push traffic around on the basis of centrally-managed rules, regardless of network entry point, under an umbrella of complete security. SD-WAN has emphatic capabilities and will direct traffic using cloudbased services to their nearest data centre in order to reduce the cost and latency of all users transiting through a centralised data centre. Neat, too, SD-WAN networks can be managed remotely by a small crew, which

tweaks rules on the fly to meet evolving challenges. Finally, there’s digitised spaces based on networking add-ons like geolocation. Electronic security suppliers at the cutting edge of technology are uniquely positioned to create and leverage digitised spaces but managing the business models with openness and integrity is going to be central to their longevity. It’s been shown by independent polling that security providers are considered to have above average levels of trustworthiness and this trustworthiness needs to be maintained, even as business models become increasingly opaque. It’s certain that security suppliers will increasingly be tasked with delivering digital data on movements, events, even the identities of people moving through spaces as part of their integrations. This is not unfamiliar ground for many electronic security providers, but the power of our systems is increasing to such an extent careful management is required. For suppliers heavily involved in digitizing spaces, protocols will be beneficial to ensure privacy thresholds are not breached as we descend a technological slippery slope. At the same time, digitised spaces are going to enhance situational awareness and empower security managers and security teams in ways we’ve never seen before. Exactly how far geolocation will develop is going to be interesting, especially when it comes to internal spaces, where wireless access points and triangulation can be used to assess presence or behaviour. The same thinking needs to apply to CCTV solutions, which are increasingly able to identify individuals, as well as monitoring their behaviour. These sorts of capabilities, supported by enhancements in networking, are going to define the future of security electronics. n

INNOVARE SECURITY DISTRIBUTION LAUNCHES IN ANZ n A NEW security distribution business, Innovare Security Distribution, has been launched to serve the Australian and New Zealand security markets. Innovare is a division of ATF Services – an Australian company with a national footprint in both Australia and NZ, and a 25-year business history. The decision to launch ISD was based on several factors, according to Mark Timmins, national sales

manager. “With strong industry feedback and supplier support we’ve decided to establish a security distribution business based on quality products, strong after sales support, competitive pricing and great customer service,” Timmins said. “We are committed to our suppliers and are looking forward to growing their brands while fostering long-term relationships with existing and new customers.

Mark Timmins

“It might sound like a cliché, but customer service still remains the number one reason people come back for more. A customer service excellence approach is the cornerstone of our culture,” Timmins said. “Understanding our customers’ needs and maintaining strong stock levels to support their growth is important for us. Our focus will be on developing our niche product offering across all of our key locations and become the best boutique security distributor in ANZ.” Key supplier announcements include Mobotix and Raytec and Timmins says ISD is currently in talks with a VMS supplier and plans to broaden its product spread. “We will look to distribute other solutions and products and add them to our stable as long as it is the correct fit that suits

our partners,” he said. Mobotix’ Ryan Fairclough welcomed Innovare as a Mobotix channel for Australia. “We chose Innovare as an addition to our channel as they have a committed business plan aligned with our global sales strategy to focus on solution-driven sales exploring not only our solutions but also our new co-operations with third party vendors and the value that they can add to those solutions,” Fairclough said. “The entire Mobotix team in Australia is excited Vlado by theDamjanovski prospects this new distribution channel provides and are really looking forward to the growth of both Innovare and Mobotix in the long term.” Meanwhile, Raytec’s Laurence Martel said Raytec was delighted to welcome Innovare into

its distribution network for Australia. “Innovare is committed to delivering high quality products and exceptional customer service, both values which are central to Raytec in offering customers the best and most innovative security solutions on the market,” Martel said. “Innovare aims to understand a customer’s needs and support them throughout the entirety of the project, no matter how small or large. We truly believe this is a vital part of harnessing relationships, by guiding the client throughout their installation. “Moving forward, we are very excited to see what this new relationship can bring and look forward to working with Mark Timmins, a long-time supporter of Raytec.”

CLARENCE CORRECTIONAL CENTRE SECURITY SOLUTION PASSES TEST n CLARENCE Correctional Centre’s electronic security system, which integrates 15 sub-systems, has passed factory acceptance testing (FAT) first time at Saab Australia’s headquarters in Adelaide. Australia’s largest correctional facility, Clarence Correctional Centre, will accommodate 1700 inmates and will be secured by OneView, which is a state-of-the-art electronic security system designed by Saab Australia. Over 2 days, representatives of the government and the centre’s builder, designers, project managers, security contractor managers and an independent certifier observed Saab engineers put OneView through rigorous test protocols. “Although Clarence is a

huge, and complex facility, we anticipated the testing would go well,” said Michael Wilkin, Saab Australia’s civil solutions operations manager. “We designed OneView to be flexible from the ground up and we’ve a solid track record of successful installations in modern security prisons,” OneView integrates all 15 security subsystems at CCC, including CCTV cameras, door access controls, intruder sensors and biometric scanners across all the prison’s buildings. It also simplifies the security picture for security control room operators by providing one easy-to-manage view. Operators receive critical information immediately which is pushed out via automatic alerts

from sensors installed throughout the prison and interrogated by built-in intelligence. “All our design, testing and modification work is done here in Australia, we now have an engineering workforce of 500,” said Michael Wilkin. The Clarence Correctional Centre, south east of Grafton, is being delivered by the NSW Government in partnership with the NorthernPathways consortium consisting of John Holland, Serco and John Laing. Cabling and device installation is currently underway and a number of the security subsystems are being pre-commissioned ready for commissioning into OneView in June.

EXPANDED ROLE FOR ANZ’S TOP MILESTONE SYSTEMS’ EXECUTIVE, JORDAN CULLIS n MILESTONE Systems has announced the promotion of Jordan Cullis, country manager South Pacific, to the role of sales director for Asia Pacific (APAC). While he will remain based in Milestone Systems’ Melbourne office, Cullis will be responsible for all sales

and marketing in the APAC region. Cullis joined Milestone Systems in December 2017 after a decade in leading roles at HID Global. At that time, the company had announced a period of sustained reconstruction and development for the

Jordan Cullis

South Pacific region, with a focus on Australia and New Zealand. Cullis was employed to oversee the transformation, which included a significant expansion of the regional team, as well as to introduce the company’s solutions to new markets and increase overall revenue. Since Cullis first joined Milestone Systems’ South Pacific team, it has doubled the size, opened new, larger premises in Melbourne’s Docklands, launched the region’s first Milestone Systems Experience Centre and is now looking for office space in Sydney. “I joined Milestone Systems at a particularly interesting time in the evolution of video management software and was tasked

TELSTRA SNP MONITORING CHANGES NAME TO SAPIO n TELSTRA SNP Monitoring has rebranded as Sapio – The Human Powered Security Company. It’s an interesting choice of name that highlights the company’s future direction – AI fuelled by data sharing via ‘activated’ security solutions. “At Sapio, we believe that technology has changed our world; as a security company, we embrace it,” said Sapio. “Without Human Intelligence, data is simply an untapped resource. When our people interpret data, they see patterns, correlations or solutions that haven’t even been considered. By

teaming sharp human minds with the world’s best technology partners, we can get ahead of threats and problems. “And if a solution doesn’t exist? We’ll build it. Sapio will harness the power of bright minds to take security technology in your business to the next level; building smarter, intuitive systems to protect and grow with your businesses.” According to Sapio, the company’s priority remains the same: to protect your business and help it evolve. “We’ll continue to bring you world-class security solutions, and you’ll be working with the same

expert teams,” said Sapio. “There has been no change in management or day-to-day operations of the business. However, as Sapio, we look to partner and deliver empowering insights through unlocking the potential for your electronic security systems. This is the essence of ‘Human Powered Security’ in our business.” According to Sapio, the business is still partnered with Telstra and will continue to have the Telstra backing and resources – Telstra has been removed from the name and identity to avoid confusion and streamline processes to serve customers better. “There will be no disruptions to service or day-to-day operations as a result of our rebrand,” Sapiro said. “All scheduled works, maintenance and installations will proceed as usual, Telstra Corporation Ltd remain the Ultimate Holding Company with 51 per cent ownership and all existing contracts remain valid.”

with steering the regional business into new markets and engaging in new ways with our partners,” Cullis said. “The team here has achieved a huge amount in a relatively short space of time, and we are well set up to drive the business forward. My new role expands on the success we are experiencing in the South Pacific, and will give us the opportunity to bring ideas and new structures to the broader region.” Benjamin Low, vice president, Milestone Systems, said Cullis was an invaluable asset to Milestone Systems. “Jordan has shown significant leadership in driving growth in the South Pacific region and we are confident that he will continue to deliver greater

success for us,” Low said. “APAC is one of Milestone Systems’ fastest growing market and with Jordan’s wealth of experience, we will be able to significantly enhance our ability to serve our community of partners and provide the best solutions available.”

SINCE JORDAN CULLIS FIRST JOINED MILESTONE SYSTEMS’ SOUTH PACIFIC TEAM, IT HAS DOUBLED THE SIZE, OPENED NEW, LARGER PREMISES IN MELBOURNE’S DOCKLANDS, LAUNCHED THE REGION’S FIRST MILESTONE SYSTEMS EXPERIENCE CENTRE AND IS NOW LOOKING FOR OFFICE SPACE IN SYDNEY.

AXIS ANNOUNCES NEW ARTPEC-7 CCTV CHIP n AXIS announces the 7th generation of its own ARTPEC chip, optimized for network video. The new chip will power an array of new capabilities and features coming to Axis network cameras. One of the first cameras to include this chip is the AXIS P1375. New features include enhanced imaging and security features, powerful compression and the ability to run analytics on the edge. Fully developed by Axis, ARTPEC-7 provides a layer of control that is crucial for effective cybersecurity. Going forward, the new chip will be the basis for the majority of Axis network video products. “In the current market situation, we believe Axis has a strong competitive advantage as one of only

hubs, intercoms, entry stations, fire systems or networking and wireless communications systems – this year you’ll see it all at SecTech Roadshow! SecTech Roadshow gets

Forensic WDR will provide clearer images of moving objects as well as enhanced detail in backlit scenes, or scenes with big differences between the lightest and darkest areas. Increased sensitivity to light also significantly extends the range of illumination for Axis cameras with IR. ARTPEC-7 enables built-in security features for Axis cameras, including signed firmware so only secure authorized firmware can be installed, and secure boot, which prevents booting of unauthorized firmware. Future Axis cameras will also let users choose between H.264 and H.265 video encoding depending on what best suits their system and surveillance needs. Either encoding standard in combination with Axis Zipstream technology will now require even lower bandwidth and storage space without sacrificing image quality. In addition, users are free to re-evaluate their choice of codec at any time if their requirements should change.

n SECTECH Camera Shootout, which will be held in conjunction with SecTech Roadshow Vlado Damjanovski in May, (pre-register here!) undertook precommissioning at Milestone Systems office in Melbourne during the week. This year there are 2 camera groups – Best Low Light and Best 180-degree Wide Angle – the latter being a form factor that’s enjoying plenty of success in applications where situational awareness is a priority. Managing the shootout again this year will be the Milestone XProtect VMS. SecTech Camera Shootout will test both groups of cameras through a range of light conditions, including low light and strong backlight, with use of the Rotakin sorting out those cameras prone to motion blur or elevated bit rates. This year we are looking at wide angle cameras for the first time and it was fascinating during shootout commissioning to see the massive coverage offered by these cameras – even in the confines of the setup room at Milestone, we got a clear sense of what multi-head wide angle cameras bring to the table – huge views with low distortion, face recognition right out the edges and amazing bit rates. “I really enjoyed last year’s

shootout – throughout the year I found myself applying things I learned during the shootout to our own applications – this year is likely to be just as beneficial,” said Milestone’s Tas Maniatis. “Right from the start, our pre-commissioning showed that improvements in bitrate have continued over the last 12 months – not only for the low light cameras but for these big multi-head wide angle cameras, as well.” SecTech Roadshow and SecTech Camera Shootout kick off in Melbourne on May 2, then travel to Sydney on May 7, Brisbane on May 9, Adelaide on May 14 and Perth on May 16. This year SecTech Roadshow has more roadies than ever – you’ll see the latest technologies from Genetec, Helios, OSA, SensaTek/Vivotek, Uniview, Dahua Technologies, Hills, Interlogix, Avigilon, Fermax Australia, SCSI, Video Security Products, Pelco, Video Alarm Technologies, Mobotix, Alarmcorp, Salto, BGW Technologies, ICT, Q Security Systems, dormakaba, 2N, Videotec and LSC Security Supplies in your home town, with no travel expenses and minimal downtime. The Interview

Darren Taylor, PMT Founded by Pam and Mick Taylor in 1979, PMT Security is one of Australia’s leading security integrators. This month we interview PMT managing director and Pam and Mick’s son, Darren Taylor, about his experiences growing up in the electronic security industry, PMT’s plans for the future and his thoughts on future technology, training and the secrets to success. JA: When did you first work in the family business – at what point did you decide security integration was for you? DT: I began working for PMT in 1996 as an apprentice, although given PMT was initially run by Mum and Dad from home I was surrounded by it as a kid. I was building circuit boards for some pocket money during school. I knew when I started that security integration was what I wanted to do. JA: What’s been the most exciting security technology released during your time in electronic security? DT: For me it has been the change in services we can offer. Technology has given PMT the ability to access the network and allowed us to offer valueadded services such as remote system management. JA: For a security integration business to last as long as PMT has, you’re doing something right. What do you think that something is? DT: We have maintained a high level of account management. Our customers drive our innovation. We haven’t been caught out by new technology or customer requirements. We also strive for sustainability - we have a long-term focus and a good balance of customers. JA: The business has grown exponentially – that must be a great feeling for you and for the team. DT: Yes, we have grown from a part-

time operation that was staffed by 2 people into a company with 85 fulltime employees and more than 100 contractors, so it’s a great feeling for the whole team. We are proud of our heritage as a family-owned and run business. PMT recently celebrated its 40th birthday and it’s great to have not only lasted 40 years but have thrived. We are on a very strong growth curve, increasing our staff levels and expanding our premises. We have offices in Tullamarine, Seven Hills, Balcatta and Murarrie and there’s an expansion of the company’s NSW offices in Seven Hills planned. There’s also been growth in expertise - PMT was the first Milestone Systems Diamond Partner in Australia and is one of only 13 in the world. JA: In what ways is the security integration business more challenging now than it was when you were first starting out in the business? DT: The challenge is something we don’t ignore, offering new services, having to invest more into the business to maintain consistency, speed and value. The challenge is an opportunity. Sometimes the difficulty can be explaining this in a simple RFI/ RFP when cost is a key factor. Most customers are now looking to the future but not all are so farsighted. Another challenge is being in a growing business in a growing industry. Staff retention is very important and so is training.

JA: How important is training – has there ever been a time the industry has done technical training properly, in your opinion? DT: Training is very important, albeit sometimes difficult, as it needs to be effective. Our back of house engineers and technical support team have completed the highest training available for selected products. As they need to deal with many remote contractors across the country, we have needed to come up with some different ideas on how we can maintain consistency and support. I don’t believe the industry as a whole has developed a great training model. It has been up to each integrator to pick and choose what and who they are willing to invest in. As a result, PMT has built a strong support team and we train mainly in-house. Unfortunately, there seem to be 2 groups of technicians – those who can run cables and fit off, and those who are only willing to commission. Young techs who learn both skillsets will quickly get ahead. JA: What was the most important thing you learned from your parents about running a successful electronic security business? Do they still give you advice now? DT: We meet a fair bit - usually at the footy! Dad is quite happy with the way my brothers and I are working together in PMT but as a Dad he will always offer advice, which is welcomed. Dad was very operational, and he loved the technical side of things. But really it was about fixing problems for customers – that was - and still is - the culture. Customer focus is a big part of our business. As PMT grows we are dealing with higher-level business challenges and their solutions but at the heart of it, Dad’s customer focus remains a trademark of the PMT business today. JA: How challenging is staff management in the electronic security industry – what’s the secret to building loyalty in the team? DT: I believe in treating staff as

individuals. People are motivated differently. It is about tapping into what motivates each individual. Job security, acknowledgement and job satisfaction are the big drivers in our business. We must continue to think outside the square and develop new relationships to maintain a healthy interest at work. Plus, a good working environment is key. We have recently employed an HR manager who is responsible for our culture, performance management, and for understanding what our teams’ individual 3 to 5-year goals are. The job of the whole team is to work towards making those goals happen.

JA: Can traditional alarm panels survive, in your opinion? What technology and business model might replace them? DT: We service and install alarm panels that can be used in a proactive way through the data we receive from those panels. We have a team responsible for remote management of alarms to advise our customers of faults prior to receiving a call from them. We also have a business analyst in our team who develops reports and also looks for trends across those sites, as we manage over 6000 sites nationally. As long as we are receiving alerts/notifications, whether

the alarm is on or off, I believe the alarm panel will continue to be a useful tool. But it must be used proactively and not in the traditional way – it can’t be a reactive product used only when the system is armed. JA: What’s the most challenging security solution PMT has ever installed – what solutions are you most proud of? DT: There are many. Our first national rollout many years ago comes to mind. We only had a small group that had to deliver a complex solution in a short time. That job allowed us to set up nationally – it made us into

The Interview RIGHT NOW, OPERATIONAL EFFICIENCIES SEEM TO BE THE FOCUS WITH CUSTOMERS. NOT JUST FOR INTERNAL STAFF, BUT CONTRACTORS ALSO.

I’ve attended don’t have vertical specific speakers. We attended the NRF in New York which was an eye-opener and gave us more ideas on what retail were really thinking. There was only a small contingent of security manufacturers there. Again, the opportunity is to understand more about our customers they are what drives our innovation and our growth. JA: You’ve been in the industry a while, Darren – what keeps you interested, what gets you out of bed in the morning? DT: I love my job and building the business has given me a lot of satisfaction. Working with our people is a pleasure - we have a very committed group. I couldn’t think of doing anything else, to be honest. JA: How is PMT different from other security integrators – what differentiates you in the minds of customers? DT: We concentrate on what we can offer or do better. Because we have maintained and continue to work on developing our brand, and because we focus on the type of customer we can best support, we have been able to differentiate ourselves from security integrators without the same focus.

a business capable of appropriately managing the volume of work that came afterwards. There have been many major integrations since. We have completed some outstanding commercial projects of late, but we’ve been doing complex integrations for many years and have installed major systems for customers including Coles Group, Kmart, Bunnings, Myer and Officeworks. JA: What new technology will have the most impact on the electronic security industry, in your opinion? DT: I believe it will be whichever technology allows our customers to receive information, and this gives us the

ability to be more valuable to our clients in many ways. Right now, operational efficiencies seem to be the focus with customers. Not just for internal staff, but contractors also. There are many product solutions capable of returning a quick ROI with regards to those efficiencies. JA: Where are the opportunities in security integration – the areas of growth? DT: I think each vertical will have its own opportunities. And I believe that integrators, as well as the manufacturers and distributors, need to be more vertical-conscious. Most conferences

JA: What are your plans for the future of PMT? DT: Our plans include the expansion of our security-as-a-service and remote operations, and further integrations with cutting-edge technologies such as facial and licence-plate recognition and video data analytics. We are taking on new technologies all the time and we will continue to do so in the future. JA: What advice would you give to young techs starting out – how can they find success in security integration? DT: Watch, observe and Listen. Try to understand who in the business can offer you additional support - mentoring can be a great way to improve yourself and your perspective. Finally, always be willing to be challenged. n

Access control

BY J O H N A D A M S

ACCESS CONTROL LATEST & GREATEST Given the vital importance of access control solutions to the security operations of most businesses, staying on top of the latest developments means ensuring your system incorporates the best functionalities and the most worthwhile efficiencies. HERE’S been plenty going on in the access control industry over the last couple of years – we’ve seen the trickle down of functionalities from enterprise to SME solutions, as well as the development of systems that are purpose-built for integration. Something else that’s been evident is that manufacturers are streamlining the installation and commissioning process, as well as offering enhanced reporting and management functions – locally and remotely. First introduced by HID, the use of smart devices as a credential continues to grow in popularity, as does face recognition access control. And there has also been ongoing development in areas like wireless locking, which uses clever system design to offer end users big system features at extremely competitive prices. According to Steve Bell, chief technology officer, Gallagher, there are a number of key trends in access control. “Contactless biometrics is becoming a big trend and there is increasing demand from customers with biometric readers to upgrade to contactless solutions,” Bell explains. “We are also seeing large financial institutions asking for a fast, secure contactless biometric to be used at the turnstile. This comes from a desire for a very secure perimeter which enables a more open environment inside. “Gallagher has also just released a world first highlevel MorphoWave integration, which provides centralised credential management to include contactless multifactor wave biometrics for high speed, high accuracy access control applications. We showcased this at ISC West in April and it received a lot of attention.” Bell argues another key trend is bolstering the cyber security of networked access control solutions.

T

“Protecting access control systems from the risk of cyber-attacks will receive ongoing focus in 2019, and best practice for manufacturers is to dedicate a team to continually review and update systems to mitigate against the latest cyber risks,” he says. “Cyber security needs to be viewed as a system-wide risk where all components out to the sensor need to be hardened to protect from the risk. Manufacturers also need to engage external penetration testers to validate their solutions. “Mobile access is another area that is growing in popularity and becoming an accepted solution for many security managers, although there is scepticism by many about the security level, as all such solutions are currently proprietary. Security managers should be looking for standards-based solutions for strong authentication and credential

Access control

storage on the mobile device. Independent associations like the FIDO Alliance are really leading the way on authentication standards and improving the security of mobile access.” Salto’s Jeff Corr says the company’s latest and greatest access control solution is SVN flex, a wirefree, data-on-card technology that transforms building access. “SVN-Flex allows any stand-alone electronic locks to read and update card access information and by expanding the number of access points, SVN flex increases the security, control, effectiveness and convenience for users and system managers,” Corr says. “This means flexibility, efficient install and easy maintenance. As people become increasingly time-poor, convenience and 24/7 access, is essential to succeed in the access control sector. A seamless experience is key.” One of the key trends in access control according to Corr, is home security DIY kits that introduce access control solutions to audiences that weren’t aware of the technology. Corr argues that the ability to give, change and remove keys remotely without the need of being physically present, allows a modern consumer to have a more flexible user experience. “It also introduces an added layer of security, as doors can be activated or deactivated in an out-ofhours emergency,” Corr explains. “This not only improves the outcome for the end user, but also reduces help desk calls and support needed from the client.” Corr is not certain biometrics has finally arrived in the broader access control market. “SALTO can integrate third party biometric readers - there are positives and negatives to utilising biometrics within access control - it just isn’t the right solution for all users,” he says. “A solution which is accessible to most end users and with less room for error is mobile credentials, which is a huge focus for SALTO.” At Interlogix, the latest and greatest access control solution is the new ChallengerPlus intrusion and access control platform, combined with the innovative open architecture TecomC4 management software. “ChallengerPlus offers increased levels of flexibility and cost efficiency to customers by building a number of features directly into the control panel without the need for door controllers or additional interface boards,” says Interlogix. “These innovative functions include the ability to operate up to 32 standard doors direct from the control panel, 2 standard lifts up to 10 floors and the integration to the UltraSync Cloud. This integration to UltraSync creates a secure external comms path to central stations or control rooms via the on-board Ethernet port at no additional communication equipment or cost. “Thanks to the integration of ChallengerPlus and UltraSync, users are now able to utilise the

CONTACTLESS BIOMETRICS IS BECOMING A BIG TREND AND THERE IS INCREASING DEMAND FROM CUSTOMERS WITH BIOMETRIC READERS TO UPGRADE TO CONTACTLESS SOLUTIONS.

UltraSync+ mobile app, which allows simple and convenient interrogation of ChallengerPlus, receive push notifications, and configure user’s information and more,” Interlogix says. “When it comes to key feature installers should seek when choosing an access control system, Interlogix says open architecture software platforms that allow customers, other manufacturers and systems integrators alike to develop their own integrations are key. These lead to improved solutions for end users combining best security technology to be deployed based on the needs of each project.” For Interlogix, the key trends in access control are led by a move towards cloud. “The deployment of our UltraSync platform falls in line with the escalating adoption of cloud-based communication products in Australia and globally, along with the rise in the popularity of mobile credentials and biometrics,” Interlogix says. “And the most important features for end users in today’s rapidly integrating world revolve around a single intuitive interface that allows users to navigate effectively through their building systems including CCTV, access control, intruder alarms, HVAC and fire systems.” Interlogix sees a biometric future for credentials. “In an ideal world we won’t need any form of credentials to gain access to buildings, instead we just show up and the door opens,” Interlogix says. “The industry is getting closer to this with biometrics now. The biometric industry is growing rapidly with regards to reliable, sophisticated biometric access control, there are still some technical challenges. Despite this, voice and face recognition as well as fingerprint access are growing in popularity, along with the trend of combining biometric technologies to further enhance security.” According to Interlogix, the greatest challenges of installing and integrating access control solutions is understanding and interpreting the end user’s requirements, bearing in mind that customer requirements will change over time. “Choosing a product that will evolve at the same pace as the customers’ needs ensures the best outcomes for customers and systems integrators alike,” Interlogix says. “In a world where instant gratification has become an expectation for many, having information at your fingertips and being to make changes efficiently, send updates or perform

Access control

general management tasks with your access control systems remotely, using either apps or web-based applications from anywhere, is now easier than ever before. “ChallengerPlus brings this to a new level using UltraSync solution and Tecom Mobile App. It allows operators to do everything from fully configuring a panel from any location, to sending critical instructions to multiple recipients via push notifications in the event of a lockdown or emergency event.” Over at EKA Cyberlock, the latest and greatest access control solution is a key-centric access control system that provides full featured access control to every locking point without wiring. “The system has all the key features you’d expect from any access control system, however, where it stands above all others is that its suitability and unique functionality is designed for geographically spread installations,” says EKA Cyberlock’s George Kharoufeh. “A geographically-spread installation could be a utility provider that has sites covering an entire state or it could be more compact such as the back of house security required in a high-rise building either way the challenges are the same which is how to deliver a single access control solution within budget over such a wide geographic area. EKA CyberLock is the solution in such applications. “Being key-centric means most of the smarts are in the key. This means that if you can communicate with the key you can easily manage the system. EKA CyberLock has a wide variety of solutions to communicate with the keys which range from fully integrated key cabinets that not only store, but also charge, allocate and program keys at the request of authorised system users through to an app that can function as the connection between the management software and the CyberKey, making the system truly portable and virtually real-time.” Kharoufeh says the power source to operate the EKA CyberLock cylinder is in the CyberKey as well. “When the key is used to open a lock the power for the transaction is supplied by the CyberKey,” he explains. “This is a unique selling point. If a competitor is installing locks spread over a large area meaning

changing and managing battery life is both difficult and very expensive. The power source in the CyberKey has solved this issue because the key battery can easily be managed by the user whether using a rechargeable key or simply changing the battery. “And the selection of locks that can be fitted with EKA CyberLock cylinders is above all competitors. An EKA CyberLock cylinder can be installed into virtually any locking situation. Be it a mortice lock on the front door of an office, a handle on a server rack at an airport, a padlock on a repeater station gate in outback Australia, a cam lock on a traffic light control box at a major intersection or even a cam lock on evidence box. We have a solution for virtually any locking application.” According to Kharoufeh, key feature should installers seek when choosing an access control system is the ability to include all a site’s doors in the system. “Often, an installer cables 20 or 30 main doors in a building and forgets the back-of-house doors,” he explains. “There may be 100 of these doors that include electrical cupboards server rack and even padlocks. Using a system that cannot affordably be applied to every door across a site, installers are missing an opportunity to sell additional product and provide a more complete solution.” When it comes to trends, Kharoufeh argues EKA CyberLock sits outside of the conventional access control environment. “This means the trends we see are slightly different to those seen by the companies who supply traditional cabled access control,” he explains. “The trend we see is that companies who in the past have considered access control a must on their main entries now require the same reporting and control over all access points. In the past they might have been happy to have most entry points such as traditional doors and padlocks under a master key system but now they want a far higher levels of control with the features of access control. Because of this trend we believe we are installing EKA CyberLock into many installations that would have previously not considered access control as a requirement.” Some trends are the same – one being remote management capabilities. “In the EKA CyberLock system remote management is a must,” Kharoufeh says. “Remote management is not only available for the system managers but also the system users. n

WHAT WILL CHINA DO NEXT? SEN spent a week last month in China visiting major CCTV and electronic security companies seeking a sense of where the market is heading over the next 3 years.

E started our visit in Hangzhou with Hikvision, Dahua and Uniview, then flew to Shenzhen to visit TVT and Sunell. The plan was to see the latest products, speak to the companies about their future directions and take a trip to each factory to get an idea of scale and the latest manufacturing processes. We spent time with the teams of each company to discuss wider matters. It was an interesting experience - I quickly realised the notion of Chinese manufacturers as a composite block is erroneous. All these companies are quite different.

Sitting on the ‘plane flying out of Hong Kong attempting to synthesise the meaning of what we saw during the week, I found it impossible to limit my ideas about what’s going on in China’s CCTV market to security electronics. Instead, I ended up thinking about broader technological trends – some global but many unique to China’s explosive smartphone-driven internet revolution. There are cultural, historical, business and political themes that feed into what’s happening there. China’s huge domestic market, phenomenal industrialisation, preparedness to copy and develop good designs,

ALL THE CHINESE MANUFACTURERS ARE FOCUSED ON AI - THE CAMERA AS A SENSOR - WITH CLEAR OPERATIONAL OUTCOMES TAILORED FOR SECURITY AND VERTICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS RETAIL

combines with an intensely competitive local business environment where any supplier that can survive will be a global powerhouse. I visited Hikvision back in 2014 - 5 years is an eon in modern electronics and computing - it’s worth pointing out the scale of change that has occurred in that time. In 2014 Hikvision’s manufacturing still had a considerable element of manual labour – there were SMT lines, but the finished components were put together by hand. That’s changing fast. Hikvision’s factory features a huge number of automated production lines – there are still techs on the automated lines doing jobs that require too much dexterity for robots or resolving problems when they arise but even IP66 ratings tests are now automated. I stood in the corner of the company’s automated workshop, with its low ceilings and heavy pillars, and looked at row upon row of automated lines stretching into the distance – I started to lose count in the mid-20s. These automated lines are built by Hikvision’s own robotics division. The scale of the facilities is immense. The Hikvision team told us their future is AI – we heard that a lot on this trip. All the Chinese manufacturers are focused on AI – the camera as a sensor – with clear operational outcomes tailored for security and vertical applications such as retail. There’s face recognition, line crossing, object searching, perimeter protection and all the rest. None of this is ground-breaking – what’s new is that AI is finally reliable and affordable. This AI is locally developed and is not limited to high end cameras – it’s being pushed into every layer of the product se&n 33

stack. Although there are specialised servers being built to handle large scale AI, most of what we saw was camera-based. While AI is a big thing in China, it’s not AI in the way most people think. Since 2016, there’s been a profound push towards enhancing efficiencies and liberating functionalities using AI – it’s become a national endeavour. We’re not just talking about face recognition. There’s been huge investment in this area and with the development of the latest narrow neural AI algorithms – called deep learning - AI is becoming more and more capable in security applications. But AI is not just in the products - it’s leveraged in making the products on automated lines and transporting finished stock around sites on automated vehicles. Hikvision also pointed out that cloud and big data would be a major part of its plans over the next 3 years. Both these focuses are interesting at many levels. Chinese internet companies have been prepared to do things for free in a way that could revolutionise the cloud business model globally. Think of affordable security, automation and CCTV with a free cloud back end and a freemium paid by high volume users. Of course, to do this, you need global penetration of Chinese platforms. Another consideration is that deep learning gets stronger the more data it’s fed and nowhere has more data than China. There are more than 500 million internet users in China, and they use mobile phones to buy off-line services online – food, haircuts, share rides and much, much more. This means Chinese AI functionalities can be polished endlessly in huge local applications. Apps aren’t simply imposed on the market as we see in Australia but are relatively simple at release and then are improved by analysing AI-recorded use patterns of users in real time to constantly add enhancements. We-Chat is an example of China’s different thinking when it comes to modern technology. It’s an umbrella app that supports messaging, video,

I GOT THE CLEAR SENSE CHINA IS GOING TO BREAK THE DEVELOPING WORLD’S MOULD OF LOW-COST LABOUR WITH ITS COMBINATION OF ROBOTICS, AUTOMATION AND AI.

photos, ride bookings, bike hire, food purchases, billing, booking dental appointments, purchasing airline or train tickets, news services, and loads more. To make all this run, We-Chat has an integrated digital wallet so We-Chat users never have to leave the app to manage their lives. The data purchases and actions generate feedback into better AI and a more useable app. China is more comfortable with AI than many other countries. Recently Microsoft’s president Brad Smith said countries should regulate AI such as face recognition before democratic freedoms are impacted. According to Smith, “We are the first people in the history of humanity who will give this power to machines…so, for the future of humanity, it is essential we think this through”. In comparison, Chinese entrepreneurs are throwing themselves at AI with all their might and using it to resolve operational business problems in every way they can imagine. It’s hard not to see that the future of AI is going to be China’s future – as important as the points Smith makes may very well prove to be. Back on our tour, Dahua’s factory was also revealing - it’s big and we saw a lot more of the production floor. There’s plenty of automation, then there are semiautomated and manual production lines. Again, Dahua’s in-house robotics team is building robotic product lines to its own designs and to meet its own requirements. Dahua, too, employs AGVs to move components and stock around the factory. I got the clear sense China is going to break the developing world’s mould of low-cost labour with its combination of robotics, automation and AI. This combination is also going to raise the bar for competitors – not only overseas but locally. Few will be able to liberate the sort of resources required to reach the same level ever again. And automation is going to drive quality up while driving prices down. It’s a ground-breaking dichotomy the market has never seen before. Dahua is focusing on AI, as well as on vertical solutions and big data. When it comes to the 2 largest manufacturers – Hikvision and Dahua – there’s a temptation to see the lock-step of technological development in a less than positive light. That’s a mistake. There’s an intensity of competition going on here, a cadence of development and counter development the likes of which we have never seen before. Will it one day deliver a camera that can do conceivably anything? When you look at a phone like Huawei’s CP30, it’s impossible to reject the idea out of hand. Uniview is smaller than these 2 giants. The company bought a large facility in Hangzhou 12 months ago and is currently bringing together its manufacturing and distribution there. Uniview is also investing heavily in AI, which it has developed in-house. Uniview’s Ximen Yan made the case that the next 5 years would see CCTV technology pushed forward almost solely by the Chinese manufacturers. It wasn’t easy to form a counter argument to these assertions.

The tight production line we saw at Uniview was smaller than the other 2 and there was more handson work. But the same processes were all there. Uniview is strong in government applications and its solutions reflect the needs of those clients - Uniview has some powerful solutions, as well as considerable experience in major systems that’s often overlooked outside of China. The company’s attainment of GDPR certification is a key development. TVT is different again - small by Chinese standards but huge compared to international competitors. TVT is also investing heavily in AI and has a comparatively large R&D department. TVT is focusing on verticals, tailoring its solutions to meet the specific needs of a predominantly commercial client base. TVT’s core focus is making the cutting edge of CCTV - H.265, AI - affordable for end users. TVT has also achieved GDPR certification and the company in a leader is software development – it was the first to come out with a smart phone app. Sunell is the oldest of this group and the smallest. Founded back in 1997, its comparatively compact range has strengths in thermal and hemispheric cameras. Sunell has a comparatively huge R&D department and has developed its own AI algorithms. People in Australia are probably much more familiar with Sunell’s product than they realise - for many years the Pacom OEM range was Sunell. Sunell’s thermal cameras and interface really caught my eye during our visit. The hardware is extremely compact, and the resolution and contrast are solid. Sunell is engineering-based, same as TVT, and both these privately-owned companies have a predominantly commercial customer base. All these manufacturers have wide ranges. It’s easy to look at the Chinese CCTV makers’ enormous product ranges - Dahua makes 1000 different products - and think they’re produced by an R&D blunderbus fired without much thought. There’s a certain truth to this wide-angle view of the market - it applies to the test-every-niche nature of Chinese tech startups, too - but there’s more to it than that. These manufacturers are end user-driven and with a huge local market to satisfy their product diversification and endless polishing of functionalities is a means of staying ahead of the hungry local competition. The next 3 years of Chinese CCTV development is not likely to look the same as it did over the last 5 years. The market has sorted itself into a small group of highly competitive manufacturers. In a real way, the last 5 years has put a giant broom through the Chinese CCTV market - these 5 companies and perhaps 1 or 2 others (including big telco, Huawei), are the last players standing in an epic struggle for survival in the largest domestic CCTV market on Earth.

SOMETHING I COULDN’T AVOID NOTICING WAS THE WORK ETHIC IN CHINA – 12-HOUR DAYS AND 6-DAY WEEKS ARE NORMAL HERE.

Team TVT.

In my opinion, we’re going to see an evolution of business models alongside the evolution of camera technology - that’s going to be fascinating. It’s also going to make the potential functionalities of CCTV wrangled by AI available to every user. You don’t need to talk to many security managers and informed end users to discover that this is something they all want very much. Just how the Chinese plan to bring their cloud-based AI solutions to the rest of the world remains to be seen – partnerships seem the most likely way. Something I couldn’t avoid noticing was the work ethic in China – 12-hour days and 6-day weeks are normal here. Whether this makes workers more productive is something for the better informed to debate but these long hours make for faster decisions because the team is nearly always ‘on’. Further, their combined R&D investment is enormous. This is a key aspect - the ability of companies to develop and rapidly bring to market products that combine the latest breakthroughs and to relentlessly polish those offerings to ensure they stay at the cutting edge. This capacity is going to be most impactful in the future as AI develops. Visiting China’s big CCTV manufacturers was a fascinating experience. Whatever you think about AI used on a wider scale, it’s a powerful tool in smaller applications, too. Security managers around the world are hungry for the efficiencies it brings to their applications. In the future, that hunger is going to be met – and met very affordably indeed. n

EON apartments

EON APARTMENTS A Uniview video surveillance solution comprising 180 cameras, workstations and management software has been installed by integrator Electrical & Fire Services through 6 Sydney apartment buildings managed by EON Apartments. HEN you think of integrated security solutions, apartment buildings aren’t the first applications that spring to mind. Yet on larger and more high-rise residential sites – especially those that include multiple buildings and after-hours security teams – there’s far more going on than meets the eye. That’s certainly the case at EON Apartments at Zetland, where Electrical & Fire Services, with support from Uniview distributor CRK, has installed an integrated CCTV system

W

that covers 6 buildings, each connected to a central location by fibre links for recording and monitoring by on-site security teams. In an application like this one, the operational brief is more diffuse than it might be for sites looking to detect and observe intrusion after hours. This system needs to provide safety and security as a valued service to residents every moment of the day and night, to keep an eye on people and vehicles on the site, and to ensure that EON’s guidelines and the over-arching strata laws are upheld. To that end, EON’s CCTV solution covers all public areas of EON Apartments – including entries, foyers, lifts and lobbies on each level, with coverage extending to corridors that lead to the 344 apartments spread across 6 buildings. Also covered are carpark entries and carparks, as well areas around gyms and swimming pools. “The system is about having visibility anywhere we might need it across our site,” explains Andrew Stefas, building manager, EON Apartments. “Our upgraded CCTV system allows us to follow incidents in real time after hours and to investigate events – it might be a break-in of a car in the visitor car spaces, an attempt to gain access by a non-resident, or the cause of damage

PLANNING THE SYSTEM

to common property that can be discovered after it has occurred. “There’s an efficiency side of the system, too. We have a security team on site after hours and the cameras mean they can watch the entire site from a single location. We’ve had attempted break-ins but there are more mundane things we monitor such as people not picking up after dogs, or people dumping rubbish on the street or undertaking unauthorised renovations. “We also use the cameras to manage the visitor car spaces – some visitors will leave their cars in the carpark for extended periods – we use the system to find out whose visitors they are,” Stefas explains. “We can also see if someone bumps into another vehicle or common property in the carpark, check which apartment they live in and raise the issue with them. “In saying all this, there are not many incidents – it’s very quiet generally – it comes down to random things that people do – the renovations, the dumping. Recently I found a roll of carpet out on the street and using the system quickly traced the carpet back to the apartment it had been removed from – the residents were replacing their carpet with floorboards and had not gone through the process of strata approval.”

SOME VISITORS WILL LEAVE THEIR CARS IN THE CARPARK FOR EXTENDED PERIODS – WE USE THE SYSTEM TO FIND OUT WHOSE VISITORS THEY ARE.

Like every upgrade, there was an operational point for EON Apartments management – it was all about ensuring the new system could offer performance the old system had never managed to deliver. “We originally had an analogue camera on every level facing the lifts, but this limited our angle of view,” explains Stefas. “The plan was to install new cameras in the lifts and move the cameras on each level to a different location. We wanted to get a wide view on every level that included the hallways leading to apartments and outside the lifts so our on-site security officers could provide better security after hours and so management had more detail when investigating incidents.” Other key elements of the design included coverage of entrances and carparks – across 6 buildings these requirements are considerable. There are 11 entrances across the 6 buildings with building separated in half. The 6 buildings cover considerable area – all the way from Victoria Park Parade down to Joynton Avenue and later while walking around the local streets taking photos, I get a stronger sense of just what a huge site this is. Next, we sit down at the workstation in the foyer – I notice the angles of view are exceptionally wide – absolutely nothing is being left out here. These cameras are all 4 and 6MP - that’s gobs of resolution for depths of field as shallow as those found in many of these scenes. The big resolution takes recognition all the way out to the edges of scenes. Each level has 5 apartments – 3 off the hall and one on either side of the lift lobby with one 2.7mm camera covering them all. “If you have a look at the workstation here you can see the way the system is laid out,” Stefas says. “We’ve moved the cameras back so we can see the entry to the lift, we can see the lift lobby on each level and look down the hallway and see where people are going. We can also see the waste rooms over here, so we can see if people are dumping things they should not

be dumping, as well as which apartment rubbish it came from. And you can see here in these carpark locations we are using 180-degree hemispheric cameras, so we miss nothing at all from a minimum number of camera points.”

NODE ZERO The core of the system is installed in a cabinet incorporating server and recorder – it’s a tidy space – everything is compact as befits a system of this size. The cabling comes into this location from the local cameras on Cat-S. “As you can see, we used a Uniview Poe switch to support the cameras and a D-Link to bring fibre from the remote nodes into this room,” says CRK’s David Payne. “Fortunately, when the buildings were constructed, they were linked by fibre and we’ve used a spare fibre for the CCTV system – it’s great for keeping the system isolated. We also have a camera in this network room so we can see who came in and what they did. “There’s plenty of room in this rack – there are some spare units in the rack that will be removed, we will move the recorder down a bit to make room for a UPS at the bottom. We had the old and the new running together at the start of the process, but the old stuff is now redundant. The system topology in this building is that the workstations and video wall operate as one port with another port handling the switches and cameras, they don’t even hit layer 2 of the D-Link – there’s load balancing applied. The topology is something we will have to bear in mind when we look to apply the remote app.”

THE INSTALLATION Payne, who is national support engineer, CCTV, at C.R. Kennedy, worked closely with Stan and the team from integrator, Electrical & Fire Services. The system topology is based around servers and a switch in a central location with local cameras cabled to a network room and fibre runs from the remote sites coming into the cabinet in the network room and accessible via workstations in the lobby of the building.

“The cameras are managed by UNV EZStation on a workstation rather than an NVR – there were client PCs here that were sufficient to handle the job, so we used those,” explains Payne. “We have individual servers in each block and each block is isolated from the others and linked by fibre. The original specification called for 160 cameras but as Stan and the installation team went along, we realised more cameras were needed to provide improved coverage of entryways. “Across the 6 buildings we have 180 cameras – 80 per cent are fixed lens. Along with the wide angle 2.7mm cameras we also use hemispherics in locations we need the extra wide coverage. With the UNV 180-degree cameras we can cover 3 entries with a single camera. It would have been nice to get 4K cameras in some of the external locations for the extra resolution and depth of field, but it really wasn’t necessary in most parts of this application.” According to Payne, the sites are sufficiently lit, and the cameras are sufficiently capable, that there’s no need for additional lighting. “The environment has enough light, so that the cameras never go into black and white,” he says. “As a result, we’ve held the cameras in colour. We tweaked settings to ensure we were not getting too much motion blur from low shutter speeds – we’ve found a balance that works for these applications. As well as having strong low light performance, the UNV cameras we are using handle backlight well, too – that’s important with these glass foyers. In the car park the cameras will go into monochrome when the lights go out but I have the threshold set to hold colour as low as possible so we can identify colour. The cameras have integrated IR but it’s not needed.” While the system is currently managed from a central location, Payne says there are plans to add remote mobile management. “We plan to have a mobile app which would allow management and security officers to view the system from wherever they are,” he explains. “We are going to use one of our TPG broadband connections to manage that part of our requirement – that’s the next step planned. A key aspect of the system is its ability to support

team would take the cameras out of the box and install them and each view on 6 floors was the same – the installers wrote on the side of the box where each camera was installed and I was able to match the camera ID with the location details written on the box – it’s a small thing but it really helped during commissioning – I searched the serial numbers and then added the location to the camera details. In other applications there’s a need to put location details within the view of every camera.”

investigation of incidents after the event and EON’s cameras are recording in H.264 at 20 frames per second for 30 days to facilitate this. Although in a residential application like this there are quiet periods at night and during the day, Payne says the site is sufficiently busy that full-time recording is warranted. “Coming from a casino background I favour recording all the time,” he explains. “It means we know nothing moved during that time because we have recorded that time – there are no questions or doubts about it. In the future we will adjust recording to H.265 but not until all the recorders are saturated but we will keep recording at 20 frames per second rather than using recording on motion.” The workstation uses 64-bit UNV EZStation to manage the system and the installation team replaced all the existing monitors with UNV monitors, which are rated for 24-hour operation.

CONCLUSION

CHALLENGES OF THE INSTALL According to Stan of Accept Electrical & Fire, the installation was in most ways straightforward with many of the cameras installed where the old cameras are installed, which made things easier but there were some aspects that required creativity. “There were some quirks to the existing cabling because of the locations of the cameras and in some instances, we needed to add routers close to camera locations,” he explains. “We also used split pairs in a number of locations so we could support 2 cameras on a single cat-5 cable run using only pairs. Other than that, it was straightforward. We are about 70 per cent of the way through the job – it takes about 4 weeks to upgrade each block including recabling – in this site there are risers and cable trays in suspended ceilings on this site so that makes it easier.” Payne agrees the split cabling was an interesting fix. “That was something different about the site,” he says. “Because the UNV cameras only need 2 pairs we were able to install 2 cameras on a single Cat-5 cable, which was good because it would have been a fiddle to re-cable to these locations. We simply used one pair at the first camera and then selected a second unused pair in the same cable at the second camera. It’s always impossible to tell whether this will work when you start out on an installation, but it did work. Obviously, it was a cheeky fix with no guarantees. Another challenge was a cable run that was unreliable and delivered a noisy picture. In that case we went with replacement.” According to Payne, another consideration was getting the colour identification right, something the team worked on – colour temperature changes throughout the site at different times. “This block was done first and has the most cameras and something we discovered early on was that there were going to be challenges working out where each camera was after it was installed – each level looks more or less identical,” Payne says. The

LPR CAPABILITY WOULD ALLOW EASIER OPERATION OF VEHICLE ACCESS AND IT WOULD ALSO ALLOW MANAGEMENT TO KEEP TRACK OF VEHICLE MOVEMENTS – ESPECIALLY VISITOR CARS.

EON Apartments is an interesting site – it’s geographically large, has greater coverage and functionality that you’d expect, and the operational requirements are sharp enough that further integration and the potential for integrating analytics might be considerations in the future. “EON has no plans for analytics but there are advantages from a management point of view,” Stan says. “For instance, it would be possible for a security officer to search recordings across the site for the clips showing a person wearing a colour, or even search for a face. There are times this would make managing the system much more efficient – it’s a large site and tracking movements across it is not easy. There are times you are guessing where a person went when they leave a camera view. Analytics could also alert security officers that a certain person or a car arrived at the site.” According to Payne LPR is on the cards as a future upgrade but he says integration to access control is less important. “We are planning to trial an LPR camera at EON,” he explains. “LPR capability would allow easier operation of vehicle access and it would also allow management to keep track of vehicle movements – especially visitor cars. When it comes to access control events, given we record on all cameras all the time, it’s not so vital. An integration like that would be about associating events and video but we can find an access event and then search for video using UNV EasyStation very quickly.” Meanwhile, Stan says he’s been impressed with the UNV product, as well as with CRK as a partner. “It’s been very good,” he says. “Obviously David knows his product very well and his support has made the installation and commissioning easier from our point of view.” Stefas is also pleased with the results of the upgrade. “Before with the analogue cameras the images were low resolution – they were fuzzy - we could not recognise people, or even see which block people went to, or the floor number a person got out at,” he says. “ Nor could the old system deliver high resolution identification of movements on each level – the new UNV system can and it makes a huge difference. We needed site-wide coverage for management and the security team, and this solution delivers it.” n

People’s Choice

CHOICE OF THE PEOPLE People’s Choice Credit Union is using a Gallagher access control and automation solution to enhance security, safety and efficiency at its head office in Adelaide. NE of Australia’s largest Credit Unions, with 365,000 members and 44 locations People’s Choice Credit Union (People’s Choice), is utilising new technology from Gallagher to improve service to members, be more efficient, reduce costs, and decrease its environmental footprint. People’s Choice head office in Adelaide covers 5 floors

of an office with a work force of 650. With a focus on improving efficiency and collaboration, People’s Choice has successfully created a modern working environment that utilises flexible work spaces, Follow-Me Printing, visitor management kiosks, and mobile solutions. Operating an innovative, modern working environment that utilises flexible work spaces in place of traditional desks, People’s Choice staff are not allocated a specific desk but instead choose where they wish to sit each day. They can also choose whether they wish to sit or stand, by having desks that can be raised or lowered to suit personal preference. Flexible work environments are proving popular for large corporate companies due to the ability to increase company-wide communication, support project work, improve productivity, reduce clutter, and save costs. “With a large staff, there is always a number of people out of the office, whether it’s on sick or annual leave, or working on business outside of the office”

People’s Choice

says Mike Humphrey, manager of Property Services at People’s Choice Credit Union. “By implementing a flexible work space model, we have been able to save approximately 3000 square metres of office space which equates to thousands of dollars each year in building costs.” To facilitate the operation of a flexible work environment and provide employees with storage for their personal effects (work-related material is stored elsewhere). People’s Choice uses banks of brightly coloured lockers that are managed by electronic access control. Using Gallagher’s smartcard, multitechnology T20 and T10 readers on each locker bank, staff badge their access card to open their allocated locker. With the readers communicating with Gallagher’s Command Centre software management platform, People’s Choice has a simple-to-operate, customisable system that enables staff to carry just one card on site. “We’re all about putting people first. As an organisation we’re not afraid to try new ways of doing things, and as a result we’re seeing significant improvements for our members and staff,” Humphrey said. Gallagher’s innovative Command Centre Mobile App means key facilities management personnel are able to manage access remotely using their mobile phones. “Occasionally staff forget their access card and I’ll get a phone call to open their locker for them,” Humphrey explains. “Being able to access the platform and administer overrides using my phone, from wherever I am at the time, is huge for me and it speeds things up considerably for the employee.” With people working in different areas at different times, People’s Choice needed a printing solution that simply and easily enabled staff to retrieve printed documents from the nearest printer. People’s Choice was also looking for a solution that helped to cut down on unnecessary waste. To meet these needs, People’s Choice installed Follow-Me Printing. This printing solution stores print jobs electronically until a user badges their Gallagher access card at a printer to retrieve their files. At this point, the user can terminate any print jobs they no longer need, cutting down on waste. The solution further reduces waste through a configuration that deletes any printing jobs that haven’t been actioned within a 24-hour period. “One of the truly efficient things about our set-up is that our printing integrates with our access control solution” says Humphrey. “It means that staff only have one card for all of their access needs on site; they can access the various office floors, lockers, and printers all with a single card, instead of also having keys and pin numbers to manage.” Through a Gallagher Bacnet integration, People’s Choice has implemented an automated, continuous temperature management solution for the large data centre located at their head office. With temperature sensors communicating directly with Command

IT MEANS THAT STAFF ONLY HAVE ONE CARD FOR ALL OF THEIR ACCESS NEEDS ON SITE; THEY CAN ACCESS THE VARIOUS OFFICE FLOORS, LOCKERS, AND PRINTERS ALL WITH A SINGLE CARD, INSTEAD OF ALSO HAVING KEYS AND PIN NUMBERS TO MANAGE. Centre, any change in temperature beyond the set limits, triggers an alarm notification to be sent directly to Humphrey’s phone. “The capability for Gallagher’s platform to send critical information, like the potential overheating of a server room, straight to my phone was a big selling point for us,” Humphrey says. “It provides a simple mobile solution to mitigate a considerable business risk.” To support efficiency at their head office reception area, People’s Choice chose Gallagher’s Visitor Management Client and Self-Registration Kiosk. The self-registration kiosk serves as an ideal extra lane during particularly busy periods, ensuring that visitors can register their arrival quickly and effortlessly without delay. The integration between Gallagher’s visitor management solution and Command Centre, ensures that a comprehensive audit trail of all visitor management events, including visitor pre-registration, escort, host, and visitor actions, is securely stored and can be easily retrieved to produce reports. n

Security & Home Automation There are now so many security and home automation solutions on the market it’s difficult for security installers to get their heads around the possibilities. One thing is certain, while functionality has changed, the need for bullet-proof catch performance, fast and accurate reporting of incidents, and overall reliability has not.

HEN it comes to security and home automation, you want the fundamentals to be solid. Any system must have battery backup and it should meet the Australian Standard and offer more than one reporting path. That could be dual-SIM or SIM and blue cable. When it comes to sensors, including cameras, you want good sensor designs and reasonable quality. In the case of PIRs, a dual pyroelectric sensor with a welldesigned lens is to be preferred. Quality mirror optics offer better performance and dual technology sensors offer lower false alarm rates in challenging environments, though they are not commonly found in typical security and home automation solutions. When it comes to CCTV, you will be getting low cost cameras with modest resolution and very wide angles of view from short focal lengths with large apertures of around F1.2. This combination of wide angle, wide aperture and low resolution might as well be a recipe for low quality image streams. Throw in low quality lenses with poor design characteristics the system will deliver awful image quality. Make sure the mobile interface is well designed and that no matter where you are in the app it’s possible to go anywhere else without having to back up 3 steps. Things

W

like geo-fencing and auto-deactivation when the system senses your approach could be nice features. Mapping and imagery are solid features and you want these to be icon-based and easy to drive. In the backend you want a reliable cloud provider and low latency – a higher performance internet service is a vital and often unconsidered component of a home automation system. And buy a system that can be monitored by a professional monitoring station. According to Stanley El Komala of BGWT, the key qualities of a perfect security and home automation solution include that it is easy to install and programme (speed of installation), easy to demonstrate to end users, is long on scalability, is a hybrid system (hardwired or wireless), and offers a large selection of optional extras (keypads, wireless devices, communicators, home automation devices and video

REMOTE MANAGEMENT APPS ARE A MUST FOR MODERN ELECTRONIC SECURITY SYSTEMS - ESPECIALLY IN MODERN SECURITY AND AUTOMATION SYSTEMS.

verification, etc). A big issue for installers will be deciding what offers best performance and reliability – proprietary or open sensor technologies, or a mix. “Proprietary technologies are usually thought to be a better choice for security systems as it fully addresses the key requirements: reliability, performance, privacy, vulnerability, usability, and maintenance,” argues El Komala. “While open technologies are typically considered more suitable for home automation or an area where price is a key concern. A good system should be able to accept both technologies. When it comes to CCTV and video verification it’s important to be able to verify an alarm event by looking at CCTV - though it’s not critical. Regardless, a good system should be scalable to accommodate for future requirements of CCTV and video verification.” According to El Komala, remote management apps are the heart of the modern security and automation system. “Remote management apps are a must for modern electronic security systems - especially in modern security and automation systems,” he says. “Everyone these days is carrying a smart phone and they interact with their smart phone every day. They need to be able to operate, control and interact remotely to access their security and alarm system using the same device.” When it comes to the question of whether hubs or controllers will dominate in the future, El Komala has no doubt. “Hubs are the future,” he says. “Aesthetically, the hub-based alarm and automation solution is attractive, compact and blends into the surroundings because it doesn’t look like a traditional alarm system. At the moment to meet customer’s needs we have hub or controller-based solutions, but the future will be hubs, in my opinion.” When it comes to most common sensors and functionalities, BGWT is seeing applied in the real world, El Komala says it’s a mix of security and automation devices but he says even

traditional sensors are being used in nontraditional ways. “PIR detectors are being used to detect when a room is occupied or vacant and managing lights to save energy,” he explains. “Another detection device that’s popular is the flood detector, which detects water leakage in laundry rooms. In some instances, this sensor is being used to turn off water valves to ensure flooding is controlled.” Something security installers are increasingly concerned about is cyber security – how important is it in this part of

the market and are installers across it, in El Komala’s opinion? “Cyber security is very important the industry is not immune to those with malicious intent,” he says. “Every manufacturer has their own solutions, but our DSC PowerG technology products have met the highest standards. This ensures customers are provided with safer, smarter and more secure products with end-to-end encryption. PowerG’s proven and robust anti-RF jamming design and 128-bit AES encryption offers an exceptionally high level of protection against digital attacks.”

Finally, installers will have to choose what they believe is the right balance of personal and professional monitoring for the security and home automation solutions they are installing. “The nature of monitoring a security and home automation will depend on the end user and the type of application (ie, residential or commercial),” says El Komala. “A well-designed system should offer both personal and professional monitoring capabilities and operationally, these should be balanced to meet the needs, the threat profile and the insurance requirements of the client.” n

● New product

Saab

SAAB ONEVIEW 4 Saab Australia has added 3 major features and boosted overall performance of its OneView physical security management system for prisons, including a new remote operation capability, a module for tracking inmates and visual dashboard metrics for measuring performance. PERATORS who have multiple sites with localised control rooms or run a networked operations centre can now operate OneView systems remotely with the release of OneView 4. In OneView 3.4, the connect feature gave operators remote viewing capability and with OneView 4, this has been extended to a full remote management capability, where authorised operators can now not only view triggered events but take actions. This is a great feature that offers back up support to facilities with fewer resources and provides options for resource sharing, or a second pair of eyes for checks and balances. This new feature compliments OneView’s philosophy of being simple to operate—remote site monitoring is passive, so operators aren’t inundated with multiple windows from satellite sites. Alarms triggered at satellite sites display in one single alarm summary control at the connecting master site. Connections view much faster and remote sites remain connected whilst the base site is monitoring it. Each facility provides access to what can or can’t be monitored and controlled remotely. They can also terminate the external control at any time. The inmate movement feature reduces the workload for corrections officers by eliminating the need to escort all inmates through facilities. With this function, inmates simply report to assigned stations to be identified and state where they need to go. Their intent is time-stamped in the system and they can move freely without personal security escorts. All routes and points are pre-programmed with time measured information, and inmate’s time travelling to or spent at various locations is monitored. If an inmate is delayed or detected in an unexpected location, an alarm is raised. Individuals or groups

O

can be managed by the system. Assets can also be checked in and out through the system. Alarms, journals, reports (muster, metric and anomaly), and associated management tools are all integrated to warn security operators of breaches or potential issues that need investigation. Another feature appearing in OneView 4 is a powerful way to visualise system metrics in multiple forms. Quickly and easily interpret data from a range of visual pictograms like graphs, charts, histograms— select your preferred way to read information. Alarm summaries, user efficiency and system health status are just a few measurable metrics which can be read at a glance with this feature. Envisage journal data in near real-time to keep watch on the facility’s daily operations. Operators can quickly analyse predictive trends or monitor situations with the new easy-to-interpret forms. It’s possible to prevent hitting the threshold of nominated alarm types with financial penalties and to analyse device usage to plan and schedule predictive maintenance. For example, those with higher usage will need frequent attention while others can be flagged for routine maintenance testing. The flexibility of this feature is scalable and adaptable to each facility’s and users’ needs. Overall performance has been boosted to reduce memory consumption and speed up service startup times. Data imports and configuration is much more streamlined. Operator workstations process data faster when the configuration tool is updating to reduce the need to restart. Creating rules is also a simpler, faster process. The configuration tool deploys faster, has popup panels to support shared layouts, a document generator with loaded templates and the ability to see previews for each configured map before deploying. OneView 4 comes with new subsystem integration and updated drivers. The Open NMS network monitoring management system supports Gallagher events and card reader systems (CardaxAE, CardaxCardReader), the Bosch duress system and IndigoVision CCTV system drivers have also been updated to support data tags and higher availability or functioning capacity. Meanwhile, the CellGuard (Austco) driver has been updated to now support master-to-master calls and set masters in the unattended mode supporting OneView’s point control. Stentophon now adds functionality for calls, PA, master-to-master, push to talk, monitor, alarms, and journal events. The PcProx card reader can now publish card swipe details. Finally, OneView client’s default theme has been updated to present a more modern look and feel. The OneView tools have also been refreshed, providing a more consistent experience across the whole system. A complete list of new features and supported sub-systems in this release is available from Saab Australia. n

Product showcase dormakaba Cobalt The range of dormakaba Cobalt electronic side load locks are motor driven to secure commercial and residential doors. They have the ability to overcome misalignment issues and release easily when required, even with excessive load on the door. The 12/24VDC electric motor in the lock drives the bolt into the strike for a secure close. If it is unsuccessful the first time, the motor will try again several times to achieve a lock. For safety, the Cobalt can easily be changed from Fail Safe to Fail Secure if there is a power outage. Side load on a door increases friction on the bolt and makes a door hard to open. The Cobalt can open with a side load of up to 100kg – a force that may be encountered in an emergency situation or with a very strong wind, etc. Distributor: dormakaba Australia Contact: info.au@dormakaba.com

GENETEC SYNERGIS IX

Genetec will be launching Synergis IX, a new line of hardware that unifies access control and intrusion within Security Center 5.8, at SecTech Roadshow 2019 during May. We got a preliminary peek at the system during last year’s Security Exhibition in Melbourne – now hardware, firmware and management software have had their final touches and are ready to go.

ENETEC is releasing Synergis IX at SecTech Roadshow – IX is access control hardware that further empowers the company’s Security Center Synergis system and Genetec’s over-arching Security Center platform. At the heart of release is Genetec’s continued push to enhance efficiency and security through the unification of access control, intrusion detection, video surveillance, communications and more. Obviously, this is much easier to say than it is to achieve. Something to bear in mind is that with CloudLink Genetec already supports access control hardware from brands like HID Global and Mercury Security, as well as electronic locks from Salto, ASSA ABLOY, and Allegion and will continue to do so. What Synergis IX offers integrators and their customers is another hardware option for expansions and greenfield sites that unifies not only access control but intrusion detection, in a hybrid controller. In lock-step is Genetec Security Center 5.8 – this

new version was developed with Synergis IX in mind, giving developers a chance to re-imagine the possibilities of the interface. I sat down with Genetec’s Lee Shelford and Rick White in Melbourne recently to get a sense of where Synergis IX fits into the Genetec product stack. That wasn’t the easiest thing – Security Center is an holistic, open management solution designed to be all things to all verticals. This fundamental makes the solution hard to confine to a simple explanation. Suffice to say, this further push into OEM access control hardware from Genetec and its ANZ supplier Hills isn’t really about hardware but about expanding the functionality of Security Center by unifying access control and intrusion detection with video surveillance and automation. As Shelford explains, Synergis IX is enmeshed with Security Center 5.8. “Synergis IX is tied to SC 5.8 and they are being released together in ANZ,” Shelford explains. “Manufacturing of the hardware is by ICT in New

LIVE DASHBOARDS, ADDITIONAL SECURITY, MOBILE APP WITH PLAN MANAGER, LPR AND GPS CAPABILITIES IN MAPS – EVERYONE LOVE THAT ABILITY TO SHARE VIDEO WITH THE RESPONDER CLOSEST TO AN INCIDENT.

Zealand. It’s beautiful gear, well-made and thoroughly proven. We have a full portfolio of ICT hardware – controllers, power supplies, the Class 5 conformance, pin pads, prox readers (Desfire, MIFARE, Bluetooth), cabinets, intelligent power supplies – the lot. Because the hardware is made in New Zealand the logistics of getting it to Australia are simpler, faster and less expensive than bringing in product from North America.” The OEM hardware from ICT is teamed up with Genetec firmware inside Synergis CloudLink to deliver unification of intrusion alarms and access control to Security Center’s Synergis access control. Synergis CloudLink is an integral piece of the Synergis IX puzzle. Shelford calls it an IP or serial translation device that sits between Synergis IX hardware and Security Center. “CloudLink takes the notion of open platform CCTV and applies it to access control,” explains Shelford. “It manages the communications protocols of all the access control manufacturers, including IX, and converts them to Genetec language so they can be unified within Security Center. Synergis IX takes the access control and intrusion capabilities of ICT’s hardware, passes it into CloudLink, which merges the Synergis access control capabilities that we already have as part of Security Center. “There’s an LCD keypad for arming areas, which is important – we’ve not had that before in Security Center. Over the last couple of years with Plan Manager into the core we’ve been able to do a lot more with maps and it feeds into this. Bringing intrusion and Synergis into the core is what’s enabling us to do more.” When it comes to specifications, Synergis IX directly manages 2 doors and supports up to 32 downstream RS-485 modules expandable to 64 doors (128 readers) with 8 inputs and 7 outputs. Synergis IX is a well-rounded solution that conforms with Class 5 – a standard for end-to-end encryption of internal system communications within an alarm and access control solution. Important, too, Weigand readers can be managed by Synergis IX while in higher security applications, Synergis IX readers are supported by a secure protocol over RS-485. And Synergis IX hybrid controllers feature integrated communications to professional alarm monitoring stations using Contact ID or IP monitoring.

INTEGRATION CONSIDERATIONS From the point of view of deploying Synergis IX, you can use Synergis Cloud Link, or a Streamvault appliance, or your own server if Synergis CloudLink firmware is installed. On bigger, more complex sites, Synergis Cloud Link is better suited to manage Synergis IX field devices and allows easier enterprise scaling. For instance, up to 2064 readers are supported by Synergis Access Manager server when paired with Synergis Cloud Link. Meanwhile, Synergis Cloud Link supports up to 32 Synergis IX hybrid controllers (or 256 readers). When the installation calls for centralized Security

time because we wanted to be sure it was ready and we wanted to be sure IX was ready as well. In terms of functionality, it’s the Synergis that people know and love, with the same look and feel, from a system management point of view the main difference is the intrusion. Rick White joined Genetec 10 months ago as project engineer ANZ to beef up the company’s access control capabilities. Rick has been talking to integrators around ANZ so they are prepared before launch and can start showing their own customers. There are systems that are already lined up – as soon as IX and SC5.8 are released installation will start. CloudLink is an IP or Serial translation device – you only need one, not one in every cabinet. It allows us to be on a LAN not being tied down Rick White runs me through access control and intrusion working together with alerts – the key takeaway is that the intrusion and access control sides of the system are seamlessly presented in Synergis within Security Center. Mapping is another part of this and it’s not just local but incorporates Google Earth to give a more complete picture of arm states and alarm states – an operator might make a map that covers a site, a city, a state or an entire country showing where is armed and where is in alarm – it’s a click away. You can also arm from the map using entry delay or instant. You can hover over the alarm to acknowledge, to investigate, to do something different – snooze, forward or open a procedure and

all from the map which came up with the alarm. We also have associated cameras with Synergis access control which is one of the real benefits of unification with Security Center – they come up in alarm areas, plan manager, we can go through footage. It’s not just a door forced alarm, it’s an intrusion alarm as well, we have all the footage from cameras in the area, PTZs have gone to alarm event presets – we are trying to keep operators in the map task as much as possible by adding alarms, layers, opening doors – the controls on the monitoring task are available in the mapping task – we want to optimise people attention without them getting confused about which screen or which system they were in. There are prompts on the right. GENETEC is releasing Synergis IX at SecTech Roadshow – access control hardware that further empowers the company’s Security Center Synergis system and the over-arching Genetec Security Center platform. At the heart of release is Genetec’s continues push to enhance efficiency and security through the unification of access control, intrusion detection, video surveillance, communications and more. Obviously, this is much easier to say than it is to achieve in the real world. I sat down with Genetec’s Lee Shelford and Rick White in Melbourne recently to get a sense of where Synergis IX fits into the family tree. According to Shelford, IX meshes with Security Center 5.8 – these products are tied together. Synergis is tied to 5.8 – they are released together – IX will start off in ANZ and based on its success here we will push it into other markets – there’s interest across APAC and Europe, as well. Manufacturing of the hardware is by ICT in New Zealand, Hills has taken stock in preparation for general availability. procedure - and all this functionality is inside the map which opened with the alarm event.” Obviously, Security Center’s raison d’etre is video surveillance and that fundamental empowers the alarm and access control side of Security Center 5.8. “We’ve associated cameras with Synergis access control, which is one of the real benefits of unification with Security Center,” Shelford explains. “They come up in Alarm Areas and Plan Manager as part of event reporting and operators can go through footage. Such an event might be a door-forced alarm or an intrusion alarm - we present all the footage from cameras in the area and from PTZs which have swung to their alarm event preset positions. “As you can see with the functionality in this Plan Manager screen, we are trying to keep operators in the Map Task as much as possible by adding alarms, layers, opening doors – the controls on the monitoring task are available in the Map Task – we want to optimise people attention without them getting confused about which screen or which system they were in.” Next, we look at door-forced Live View – this is very seamless, ideal for following fast-paced incidents. “What Genetec is doing is providing functionality for operators before they know they need it,” Shelford explains. “There’s an art to being an effective CCTV operator and a thoughtfullydesigned and installed system supports CCTV operators through configuring of maps and visual tracking. The operator knows which camera is adjacent to an incident by hovering over an icon to view a thumbnail that leads to another camera with a click. “This piece of software can be configured to cover verticals – we have an airport team, a retail team – but it’s not bespoke. This means there is a lot of functionality that does not apply to all solutions we can tune out for a given application.” When it comes to driving Security Center 5.8, Live Dashboard stands out. “Previously we had a stack for events – access, LPR, health monitoring – then we went a step further with reporting into health statistics reporting,” Shelford says. “We wanted to make information easier for people to digest – the live dashboards deliver this in real time, which is easier for airports and other customers who need to edit and personalise their dashboard and personalise their system without having to pay a PSIM developer to do it for them. “An operator can this dashboard editing themselves and we can make operator edits public or private, so other operators can pick the versions they want to use. Also simplifying the experience of Security Center 5.8 is that operations, investigations, maintenance have been divided into colours – access control is red, video is green and LPR is yellow. But we can remove all buttons if all an operator does is monitor video – they can have only that functionality. “Security Center 5.8 has default encryption with no overhead from certificates – everything

including video is encrypted and secure,” Shelford explains. “And we’ve added a security score function which tells you how the security protocols applied to your system rate. This score considers workstation security, port lock-down, camera passwords and is not static but a complex procedural functionality with a link to our hardening guide. The system’s cyber security capabilities now go as far as telling you there’s a firmware update to resolve a vulnerability and downloading the update and presenting it with a 1-click upgrade option - Genetec update service is now inside Security Centre.” Another core aspect of Security Center is analytics. “Genetec acquired Kiwi last year, so there are data scientists on staff,” Shelford explains. “We wanted to unify analytics with Security Center 5.8 so it could be mass-deployed in a way that was cost, time and resource effectively – instead of 10 cameras on a server, we can support 100 - we have 4800 cameras using a camera integrity analytic on a single server. “The key thing with analytics is reducing processing but given there’s only light processing power at the edge if you want things like people counting, object detection and direction control, you need a GPU. The more cameras are using proper deep learning analytics, the more the solution learns and the more effective it is. Feeding into this, the more data you have, the more powerful analytics can be with sufficient processing capability. “Having a unified system means we can do scenarios like object and motion detection and deep learning people counting – we can support existing assets but do it accurately – we are in the high 80 per cent at face level and into the 90s counting from the top down, which is tangible data.”

CONCLUSION

IT’S A GREAT PARTNERSHIP, A GREAT SOLUTION, THE MARKET IS READY FOR ANOTHER CHOICE – IT’S OPEN, IF YOU HAVE AN EXISTING SYSTEM WE CAN USE A BRIDGE TO BRING THAT OVER, MIGRATE THE DATABASE.

Spending time with Genetec’s Synergis IX is instructive. Combined with Security Center 5.8, this new hardware gives Genetec users granular and enterprise enhancements to existing and greenfield solutions. Typical Genetec, developers have refused to leave well-enough alone – they’ve polished and streamlined functionality and its intuitive expression to new levels of sophistication. According to Shelford, the clincher in the relationship between ICT and Genetec occurred when the ICT team came over and met Pierre Racz, Genetec’s founder and managing director. This isn’t surprising, as there are cultural synergies between Genetec and ICT that go beyond hardware integration. Both companies are privately owned, and each has a customer-centric culture with an intense focus on development. “ICT got to see first-hand Genetec’s ideology and innovation - how the company has grown and came to understand how Pierre wants to retain that ethos and the quality of the product going forward,” Shelford says. “ICT liked what they saw and so did we - it’s a great partnership, a great solution – and most importantly, we believe the ANZ market is ready for another choice in access control.” n

Help desk ■ Below are the approximate recommendations for rest times (complete rest, that is) between sets according to your goal, per the National Streng th and Conditioning Association (NSCA). *Note that since fat loss depends primarily on diet, there is no official rest-period prescription for it, although we feel that both short and long rests work, depending on the program.

Q: I’ve recently been working on a weather-sealed cabinet on a pole where the rubber seal through which cable entered the top part of the cabinet has atrophied in the sun. Because there was no drip loop in the cable – they just went into the cabinet on an angle – over time the cabinet has slowly filled with water killing the controller and comms module inside. Is there an ideal drip loop shape in your opinion, or is a simply convex curve enough? A: A simple curve down and up is enough – gravity will do the rest and will pull water off the cable at its lowest point. A full loop is probably easiest to add into a cable run. Something you do see in many electrical installations is drip loops that include a couple of metres of spare cable looped multiple times. You also see loose cables hanging from a cabinet with no attempt at cable management – any loops should be held in place, not flapping around in the wind placing stress on terminations.

Our panel of experts answers your questions.

Q: Could you offer some general tips on troubleshooting cable runs? A: Most wiring failures will involve shortto-ground, or shorted circuit caused by insulation failure or a stripped wire or whisker in contact with a metal component like the chassis, a panel housing or a mounting bracket. Another common failure is caused by an open circuit resulting from a broken wire or a broken connection or termination. If you arrive at a site planning to troubleshoot a cable plant, it’s valuable to remember that before spending hours of diagnostic time grovelling about in cable trays you should test all the fuse circuits using a DVOM or test light. Don’t just check them visually, either. A fuse can fail even if the surface doesn’t look burned or there’s no obvious break in the fuse itself. Use your test probes and when you find a failed fuse, pull it and give it a good clean, especially on the contact points. Also look for loose fuse connectors inside the fuse chamber. It goes without saying that the bulk of actual wiring failures are the result of connection failures at the end of cable runs. If you have some intermittent power problems, the place to start looking is the

wiring connections – they’ll very likely be corroded – even slight corrosion is enough. The solution is to pull the connector and tidy up with electrically compatible corrosion inhibitor. When you’re working alone, use a DVOM with a min/max voltage alarm when testing for intermittent failure. This tool will record the highest base voltage in the circuit, sounding an alarm when a higher voltage occurs. If you’re performing a cable movement test looking for intermittent failure and you need both hands this audible test is perfect. Another useful though less common tool when seeking ground connections is a lab scope, which will highlight problems as a voltage spike in an otherwise flat signal. You can also use a short detector when hunting short to ground circuits. These tools aren’t expensive, but they’ll let you discover shorts hidden by other cables or fascia panels. Buy the best trouble shooting tools you can as they will have more range. Q: I’m using a very fast lens in an external application looking across water and we are experiencing unusual blooming around lights near and far, as well as ghosts adjacent to

distance lights. Is this down to the lens or is it the camera? A: It sounds like saggital coma, a lens aberration which causes light from offaxis to create a trailing comet tail away from the optical axis. This aberration is more common towards the edge of a lens – we’ve observed it with hemispheric cameras. You also seem to have some ghosting from internal reflections. None of this is uncommon with a very fast lens wide open, even with a very slow shutter speed. It doesn’t mean the image isn’t sharp or worthwhile, so you’ll need to decide whether or not the enhanced images after dark are worth the price of sagittal coma around parts of the scene that may be superfluous to your operational requirements. Q: I rather like Help Desk’s quirky take on measuring electrical properties with home-made kit. What do you think is the simplest electrical meter it’s possible to buy or make – the one with the most functions? A: It’s possible to wind a coil of wire around a Silva bushwalking compass to make a voltmeter, potentiometer, galvanometer, electromagnet and wattmeter. We’ve never tried this, so we’re not sure how accurate it might be, but you could conduct tests alongside a DMM/etc to get a general sense of what performance might be. Q: Is the signal from an IP camera generated in digital form, or is it converted from an analogue signal after being generated by the camera sensor? A: A camera sensor is made up of pixels – each pixel is an active photodiode comprising microlens and filters, amplifier transistor, reset transistor and column bus transistor, with a photodiode on top of a potential well. Light comes in through the lens, goes through a Bayer colour filter array which arranges RGB

colours. It then reaches the photodiodes of the sensor itself and the output voltages are scanned and read and converted to serial. There’s additional processing in the camera system which tidies up the data after A/D conversion. Typically, the camera engine will do quite a lot of cleaning up and enhancing of the signal in real time. There’s a simplicity to digital states that makes working with them easier than processing analogue signals. Q: For serious security applications would you use very wide-angle lenses on 1/3-inch sensors or not? A: Wide-angle lenses can include chromatic aberrations, vignetting, excessive barrel distortion and corner softness. And if you need identification, then you need the lens close to the subject. Given the challenges of wide-angle views, we’d recommend you cover your operational target area fully but nothing more. For instance, a 130-degree

angle of view might include huge amounts of detail, but if a large part of that detail includes the walls adjacent buildings, the foliage of street trees and tens of degrees of empty sky, you’re better to opt for a narrower field of view with a higher concentration of pixels. Something else operators need to manage with a wide-angle view is perspective distortion. When everything in a very wide, very deep scene is in focus, it can be challenging to ascertain scene context – depth of field and distance between objects are much harder to judge. When commissioning cameras with wide angle views, try to include a fixed foreground element within the first 5 metres as a DoF reference – for instance, a utility pole in a shopping mall. Wide angle lenses give great situational awareness and allow operators and investigators to follow unfolding events much more easily than they could with if jumping between 4 narrow angles of view. Something to consider if you need very wide views from a single camera point is a multiple head camera, which uses 2 camera heads to deliver 180-degree views of a scene without the challenges posed by significant distortion. The latest cameras – we tested Vivotek’s MS9390 recently – are exceptionally capable and deliver very low bitrates and virtually invisible stitching. n
