Dear Readers, Happy 2015! I hope you enjoyed the holiday season and are refreshed and ready to take on the New Year! The very first issue of SST in 2015 revolves around Commercial & Office Security. It is so important for every business to place its security at the forefront of its strategic objectives. Too often, small businesses do not include this in their immediate ‘to-do list’ because they might think that they aren’t targets, since they are only a small operation. This type of thinking could destroy their business. In addition, larger organizations are already bulking-up their security so smaller businesses are becoming more attractive as targets. Security threats are also not limited to attacks from the outside, but can come from within your own organization. In this issue we look at ways that all businesses, whether large or small, can limit the possibility of such security threats. Our Cover Story, written by Jenny Månsson from Axis Communications, delves into the idea of Cashless bank branches and its impact on the security industry in the near future (pg. 18). In this issue, we also cover shows such as Secutech Vietnam 2014 and Secutech Taipei 2015 (pg. 107). I am also so excited to announce that I have introduced two brand new sections in SST! The first section called “Inside Look” explores breakthroughs in the security industry. This issue’s Inside Look features Technologies such as Facial Recognition and Embedded Vision (pg. 24). The next new addition to SST, is a section called “Expert Insights”. This issue’s Expert Insights looks the steps employers can take to help employees feel secure and protected in the workplace and is penned by James Kelly, the Chief Executive Officer from the British Security Industry Association (pg. 74). Have a great read! Sharon Kaur Editor

The Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and SII have been offering training programmes under the Singapore Workforce Skills Qualifications (WSQ) framework for the Security industry since 2006. To date, more than 70,000 security personnel have benefitted from Security WSQ training. WDA’s director of the Healthcare, Social and Business Services Division, Doris Kuek said, “WDA is pleased to support ASIS International and SII in this iconic event, to further uplift the capability of the security workforce. more complex work using technology”. “The Security Industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the 21st century. Since 9/11 and other notable incidents, the world has not looked back. Security has become a necessity in businesses and our everyday life as with other basic utilities. The demand for security manpower, services and technologies are at its peak. We are challenged to meet this demand and to protect against future threats. With limited resources, there are concurrent short term, tactical and strategic initiatives being executed by various parties in the ecosystem, which include public sector, private sector and academia. I am pleased to note that the collaboration between various parties in Singapore is in place and has delivered tangible result. Cashless Bank Branches – Will They Reduce The Need For Surveillance And Security? Introduction

By Jenny MĂĽnsson, Director Business Development, Banking Finance, Axis Communications

Overall around the world branch banking is undergoing a transformation. The number of people choosing online banking, mobile banking or self-service areas over doing their bank errands in a traditional bank branch is increasing. This gives banks the opportunity to increase their operational efficiency by restructuring their channel strategy and revise the type of services that their traditional bank branches offer. One step in this direction is to make some branch offices completely cashless, handling only consultations and similar activities while customers are directed to different self-service areas for withdrawal or deposit of cash. This phenomenon is particularly in Sweden,

18

seen where

three of the four major banks have a significant number of cashless branches. Nordea has approximately 50 per cent of their branches as cashless while the figure for SEB is almost 60 per cent, and rising. Even though Sweden has come very far compared to many other traditional bank markets, there are examples around the world where this is starting to be implemented.

ATMs and self-service areas. Ex Bank Audi in Lebanon has started to replace their traditional banks with cashless branches, simply because it is more cost efficient. The cost for one traditional bank is 15 times higher than for one of the cash and staff less branches called NOVO. However, the need for surveillance in bank branches will not diminish even when there is no cash handling for several reasons: For example, National Irish Bank implemented cashless bank branches from Nov 1, 2011 and First National Bank (FNB) opened their first cashless branches in Johannesburg in 2012. The

main

reason

for

cashless

branches is that handling cash is very expensive and there is a significantly higher cost in branches carrying cash compared to those who choose to go cashless. Cash also poses greater security risk and banks are actively trying to reduce cost and risk by moving the cash to

Money is not only coins and notes, it is ones and zeros as well. Banks handle a large amount of electronic money every day and the requirements for security around this money handling are very high. Banks need to comply with regulations both internal and

external– HR, unions etc. – and these regulations don’t change easily or particularly fast. The people who rob banks are not always part of an organized crime but sometimes simply individuals that act in despair and on impulse. Bank robberies do also occur in cashless bank branches, as the bank robbers simply don’t know beforehand that the branch doesn’t handle cash. There is an increasing level of threats towards bank personnel; specifically in branches that are not carrying cash and that are mainly

focusing on consultations. The limited availability of cash creates frustration as well as perceived bad advice for investments on a stock market in turmoil. There could be any number of reasons for a bank, even a cashless one, to be targeted. Banks need surveillance in order to deter crimes and also to be able to identify the people that are threatening their personnel. Bank robberies are not the only threat towards bank branches however. Internal fraud is also a possible threat in which video surveillance is an efficient way of detecting, if not deterring.

Security Solutions Today • January / February 2015

When debating whether or not surveillance in modern cashless bank branches is indeed necessary– the answer is yes. In terms of evolving security needs, banks will need to be smarter when choosing their surveillance system. Moving in the direction of IP video surveillance will enhance security and give banks the flexibility they need while maintaining cost efficiency. Another appealing side is of course the possibility to be alerted when potential crimes are taking place, or about to. Bank video surveillance goes from just producing forensic evidence to actually preventing crime before it happens. IP video surveillance provides a flexible platform to meet ever-changing environments in the banking sector, allowing banks to continuously evolve their security with futureproof solutions, staying one step ahead of crime. SURVEYING TRENDS IN THE SECURITY INTEGRATION MARKET

By: Scott Lindley, President, Farpointe Data

Surveying Trends In The Security Integration Market

Today’s Sophisticated Security End Users Demand Higher Levels Of Expertise, Integration And Interoperability

I

t’s evident that the majority of security installations are becoming more and more complex. No longer content to monitor and manage separate access control, fire alarm, video surveillance, intrusion and HVAC control systems, corporate security and technology managers want to consolidate and integrate various disconnected security and facility management systems. At a dramatically increasing pace, the Information Technology department is leading the initiative, particularly given the trend toward convergence of physical and logical security systems. End-user customers are demanding that their integrator or dealer understand their business and their infrastructure. Security dealers and integrators must quickly decide whether or not they want to be part of this new security paradigm or slowly wither away, providing traditional stand-alone solutions. And, it’s not a one-time decision.

22

With every new advance in the installation marketplace, dealers and integrators must again and again decide whether to keep pace. Successful implementations require greater technical knowledge of systems than ever before along with products that work together more easily, while simultaneously providing better ease of use to end users. Dealers and integrators who want to be positioned for continued success in this evolving marketplace need to choose not only the right products for any given installation, but align with manufacturing partners who will provide them with the best prospects for long-term success, manufacturers that heavily invest in both new scalable technologies for their products and support programs for their channels.

A New Quid Pro Quo It used to be that the dealer or integrator that sold the most widgets earned “most favoured” status from its manufacturers. Having that status

Security Solutions Today • January / February 2015

resulted in recognition, special perks and discounted pricing for those who delivered. However, in a direct reflection of the new realities of today’s security market, this simply isn’t the case anymore. It’s not that manufacturers no longer appreciate top sellers or want to avoid rewarding them. It’s because forward-thinking manufacturers know that their dealers and integrators have to stay on top of the latest technology trends in order to stay competitive. These manufacturers want their dealers and integrators to succeed in a manner that will keep both the integrator and the manufacturer successful in the years to come.

Being Seamless is Essential Reliance on proprietary technologies and platforms inhibits innovation, integration and the assimilation of emerging technologies. Issues arising from proprietary technologies plague too many systems. This is self-defeating for the security industry, creates major

responsible for many of these operations, they are beginning to dictate what will be used, particularly for physical access control systems. Seamless integration means the physical access control department, as well as other groups in the enterprise, have the freedom to select different technology vendors, relying on the command and control platform to handle the integration.

problems for security dealers and integrators and hinders end users from having flexible, scalable security platforms that cost-effectively protect their people and assets. We increasingly hear that a major trend that will permeate physical access control now and for the foreseeable future is the growing connection between physical security and IT security. Because of this, there is growing demand by organizations for migration of computer-based systems to a common software platform or to standards-based platforms that can be easily and seamlessly integrated. Leveraging technology breakthroughs and a need for increased security, companies will also more rapidly adapt smart cards, two-factor readers, biometrics, long-range wireless and intelligent video into their overall systems. Physical access control systems on an enterprise level are now described as much in IT terms as they are in access control terms. New command and control integration platforms are giving integrators a wider range of solutions to help end-users meet this

challenge head-on while, at the same time, requiring the integrator to have higher levels of IT expertise.

Integration Equals Success Today, the various components frequently used in the typical security system are not only disconnected, but from different manufacturers, complicating or making integration impossible. All too often, they employ incompatible hardware or proprietary, unsynchronized databases or completely inconsistent user interfaces that compete for space and attention. Such systems may be inefficient and need many people to manage them. Security personnel who have been forced to use them have been frustrated for some time but these systems will not pass muster with IT personnel. There is a good reason for this. Such systems increase employee and training costs, foster unnecessary equipment expense, have gaps causing security and safety breeches and can produce downtime in mission-critical operations. Since IT budgets and management are

This extends to system hardware. Today, with one card reader, users can read most popular 125KHz proximity cards, including those from Farpointe, HID and AWID. 13.56MHz smart card readers can process contactless credentials based upon NXP Semiconductor’s Mifare technology as well as based upon France’s Inside Technologies. Such readers provide continuity throughout the organization, without having to eliminate legacy cards while additionally building a pathway to higher security applications in the future. Dealers and installers who want to be able to offer this type of powerful security platform to their customers must be willing to stay one step ahead of the technology.

Partnering for Success Dealers and integrators must recognize and respond to these emerging trends if they want to remain competitive. That means partnering with companies that are also aware of where the market is going and are staying one step ahead of customer needs. Integrators need more than just equipment in todays market. At a minimum, they require training, technical support, sales and marketing expertise and, of course, innovative, forward-thinking products. Today’s partnerships are based on helping both partners build their businesses and profits, not just selling more products. For more information, please visit www.farpointedata.com. ssT

FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY

Megapixel Cameras Improve The Results Of Facial Recognition Technology In Physical Security

By: Carl Huntsman, Regional Sales Manager (Southwest), Arecont Vision®

U

ntil just a few years ago, artificial intelligence was considered more science fiction than reality. The viewer’s imagination was stretched when watching contemporary entertainment where robots had seemingly human capabilities and emotions, or where crimes were solved with lighting fast speed using intelligent software. Today, these types of systems have dramatically matured and solutions such as facial recognition have become mainstream technology in the physical security marketplace.

Technology Benefits One of the reasons that facial recognition has been so readily adopted in physical security is because it is a non-intrusive application compared to other identification solutions. No physical contact is required in order to complete the process of comparing an image to images in a database. And the system is easy to install and use on an IP network. Individual video images used in a facial recognition application can be captured at single points such as an entryway at a research facility or at a bank counter. Facial recognition software can also be applied to images

24

Security Solutions Today • January / February 2015

from multiple video feeds such as at casinos or in retail environments. And it’s an easy adjustment if the system needs to be scaled up or adapted to new requirements. Beyond the video surveillance and security applications, facial recognition technology is also getting traction in sales and marketing activities. In retail applications, the data from facial recognition software tells management – by gender, age and ethnicity – who is looking at specific merchandise and/ or sales promotions. Facial recognition can provide fast results with actionable insights at a lower overall research cost than conventional methods.

Behind the Scenes Facial recognition is no different from other intelligent systems in that the process follows a simple flowchart; namely acquire, detect, align, extract and compare:

• •

Acquire – the image is captured from a digital stream. Detect – the face is isolated from the whole of the image. If parts of the face are missing due to positioning or object interference,

FACIAL RECOGNITION TECHNOLOGY

• •

the software will reconstruct the facial image based on symmetry. Align – the facial image is vertically aligned. Extract – the final step in constructing the facial image may take into account a variety of measurement combinations such as facial contour, distance between the ears, distance between the eyes, length and width of the nose, length of the mouth, facial feature mesh and the colour of eyes, skin and hair where applicable. Compare or Match – The obtained results will be compared to recorded data or white and black lists.

The on-going refinement of facial recognition technology has provided results that are accurate and fast. For example, search capacities have reached one million records per second. It is also generally acknowledged that facial recognition is 10-times faster than a fingerprint recognition system in a like environment and with the same database.

Resolving Challenges Facial recognition systems face several challenges in real world applications, some of which may not have a resolution at this time. More often than not, the issues are related to something other than the process and algorithms of the facial recognition technology. For example, images may

be required from cameras installed in locations with ambient lighting conditions such as a windowed lobby or a parking garage. The overly bright or overly dark scene can cause poor images to be captured, making the data more difficult to process. Video surveillance cameras with true wide dynamic range (WDR, 100dB) produce a near-to-reality image in ambient light with the detail needed for the facial recognition process. In other cases, the database contains photos that have a standard faceforward pose (i.e. driver’s license, passport, etc.) Matching the captured image to the database photo can be more complicated if the angle of the pose captured by the camera is different than the pose in the database photograph. Megapixel video cameras can cover a wider field of view than conventional video surveillance cameras and with higher resolution. This allows cameras to be positioned to capture more of the scene and potentially a better angle of view for image capture and matching to the database. Facial recognition algorithms require significant amounts of data to assure a successful process. Conventional analog video surveillance cameras will often not produce sufficient detail to meet the minimum requirements of the algorithms. With IP megapixel cameras, the more pixels that make up an image, the more detail that can be seen. Pixel density calculators

INSIDE LOOK

can provide the necessary data for determining the pixels per foot (ppf) needed to produce the detail to meet minimum requirements. For facial identification, 50ppf or better is generally considered the minimum level of clarity needed. Some software may require as high as 150ppf. To calculate manually, simply divide the field of view by the horizontal resolution of the camera. Many databases contain photos that are out of date and do not accurately portray how an individual looks today. No camera is able to fix this problem, but there are alternative solutions. In the case of registered users in a system (i.e. frequent flyers, fidelity cards, etc.), a regular update can be made each time the individual is in the area covered by the subscribed system. Photos also exist in social media and website spaces and it is possible to search outside the system in these spaces to update a database. Facial recognition and other intelligent technology solutions are showing tremendous potential in the physical security market when matched with the higher resolutions delivered by megapixel cameras. The effort is assisted by the expertise of software developers and by the experience and support of systems integrators who can take the solution from concept to implementation for the customer. TOP 3 MYTHS OF PHYSICAL ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY

Top 3 Myths of Physical Access Control Technology Introduction

A revolution at the door It is no exaggeration to say that network video has revolutionized the video surveillance market. Now the access control industry is on the verge of a similar development. Once again, it is the transition from analog to IP-based systems and with it the adoption of open standards which provides new opportunities and stimulates market growth.

By Ola Jรถnsson, Business Development Manager, Axis Communications

Security Solutions Today โ ข January / February 2015

Since the introduction of the first network camera in 1996, the market share of IP-based video surveillance systems has increased year by year. Today, network video solutions offer a host of benefits and advanced functionalities

TOP 3 MYTHS OF PHYSICAL ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY

that cannot be provided by analog video surveillance technology. There are a number of common misconceptions as the physical access control industry undergoes a similar transition from analog to IP-based technology. In the following points, I will address the top three of these myths.

Myth #1 - It’s not worth upgrading existing analog systems to IP-based technology A typical analog access control system is dependent on having each device – card reader, handle, door lock, door position switch, etc. – hard wired with RS-485 cable into one central unit or central server. Besides being proprietary systems, which confines the end-user to one single provider of hardware and software, these solutions often tend to be very complex and require expert personnel to handle installation and configuration. Furthermore, when expanding analog systems the process is complicated by the need to consider that a typical central controller is built to accommodate a certain maximum number of doors, normally 4, 8, 16 or 32. Not only does this limitation make the system inflexible but also makes it difficult for the end user to match his requirements with products available, e. g. if there is a need for access control at for example 9 or 17 doors. This lack of flexibility also brings high marginal costs, which can make the addition of one extra door unjustifiably expensive. Upgrading an analog access control system to IP-based technology therefore allows for more flexibility

while lowering costs as the system needs to be expanded to include additional doors. IP networks can be used for more than one application. This way different security systems can use the same infrastructure and can be integrated with each other. Often remote monitoring and management of security systems is a key requirement. This can be easily implemented with IP-based solutions which feature webbased console access.

Myth #2 - Access control systems are only for large installations Analog access control products and systems are normally designed and optimized for large installations with a lot of doors and maybe thousands of credentials (cardholders). The actual market looks very different. According to the Security Sales & Integrator Gold Book 2013, the average installation consists of seven doors with less than 130 credentials. Only about 20 per cent of the installations have more than ten doors. Without the need for hard wiring to a central control unit or central server, IP-based access control systems enable installations that are very flexible and scalable. This means not only a more versatile solution, but also a more cost efficient one. Freed from the constraints of enlarging the system in certain multiples, a network-based solution can – should it be necessary – be enlarged by one door, and one reader, at a time. Additionally, IP-based technology enables “edge” solutions. An edge solution has one controller for each door, which is then connected to the existing local Ethernet through a

SECURITY FeaturE

regular network switch without the need for a central server for management. Since IP networks now are ubiquitous in offices, stores, factory plants and similar facilities the cost of adding an IP-based door controller would be minimal, as opposed to multiple serial connections wired back to a central server. Cabling work can be even further facilitated. By employing a PoE (Power over Ethernet) supported controller at each door the need for a separate power cable is eliminated, thereby reducing the total installation cost and time compared to that of an analog access control solution.

Myth #3 - Access control systems are proprietary solutions that can’t be integrated with other security systems Very much like in the video surveillance market, the shift from analog to IPbased technology in the access control industry will cause a transition from proprietary systems to open solutions. And these solutions will most likely be based on international industry standards. Open solutions and standardized interfaces are a prerequisite in any industry that wants to establish its own equivalent of “plug-and-play”. There are many gains from such a development also in access control. It will allow end users to freely pick and choose between components – reader, door controller and software – that best satisfy their needs and preferences. This freedom of choice makes the system future-proof and means the end user no longer has to rely on a single brand or supplier. Equally important, it can also enable integration with

TOP 3 MYTHS OF PHYSICAL ACCESS CONTROL TECHNOLOGY

A typical analog access control system is built around proprietary technology from a single supplier

other security related systems and third party applications, without the need for costly hardware boxes to provide the “bridge” between the different systems. For example, a very common request is to integrate physical access control with video. People entering a

building will automatically trigger a camera; the live images can then be used for investigation of incidents or identity control. In the network security systems market there is already a clear trend to develop

open or standardized application platform interfaces (APIs), which can be used by all competing market participants on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. Naturally, this will increase supply and promote competition and bring a new level

effortlessly and seamlessly with each other, as well as with other video surveillance products and systems conformant with the standard.

For example, the Open Network Video Interface Forum (ONVIF), which is a global and open industry standards body with the goal to facilitate the development and use of IP-based security products, announced in 2010 an extension of the organization’s scope of standardization to cover physical access control. Ideally, access control devices from manufacturers that comply with the ONVIF standards will in the near future interoperate

According to a market forecast by analyst firm ARC Advisory Group, IP-based access control systems will comprise more than 35 per cent of the market in terms of shipments by 2016. A key factor will be that new buildings are increasingly being equipped with IP-based building control systems. This provides the basis for integration of previously often separate systems such as access control, intrusion detection, fire alarms or video surveillance.

Future outlook

Open standards and the ability to base different security systems on the same IP network architecture allows installers to build solutions based on products from various manufacturers. This way they can better meet customer demand, price projects more competitively and offer custom solutions to particular installation challenges and requirements. End users benefit from a future-proof and adaptable technology that can easily scale to their growing needs without being locked into any one manufacturer. Mission Aleksandrinsky Theatre entrusted the installer with an important task – to create a unique vision-based system accomplishing two purposes at once. The first purpose was creation of an interactive system combining several stage floors into a united production space. The second purpose was diametrically opposite in its idea but fully technologically compatible with the first one: live steaming of performances to viewers. Moreover, the live steaming had to be able to offer the viewer an opportunity to see all of the action rather than an ordinary video providing only a rough idea of the performance.

The Solution Based on the above tasks, it was obvious that the system being created should provide delay-free high

The customer opted for AXIS Q6035 and AXIS P3346 Network Cameras, AXIS T8310 control panels as well as AXIS T8311 joysticks. The basic arguments for selection of equipment for the theatre administration were high image quality and the possibility of multistream broadcasting. The choice was also influenced by simplicity of interface, the possibility of remote variation in view angle as well as operational comfort while working with Axis PTZ cameras.

The Russian State Pushkin Academy Drama Theatre - the legendary Alexandrinsky Theatre is the oldest Russian national theatre. It was founded by the Senate’s Decree, signed by Empress Elizabeth (daughter of Peter the Great) on August 30, 1756, the day of Saint Alexander Nevsky. This theatre is the progenitor of all Russian theatres and the date of its foundation is the birthday of Russian professional theatre. The foundation of the theatre gave a start to the Russian state policy in the field of theatre arts. The Russian State Drama Theatre served as an attribute of the Russian state system for over two and a half centuries. In the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries it was the main imperial theatre; Russian emperors were directly involved with its guidance.

New arts technologies The new Alexandrinsky Theatre opened in May 2013 and represents a complex of three buildings: the stage floor (Small Stage), a media centre and a school for the training of technical staff including directors,

Technically, communication between stage floors remote from each other can be realized with the help of multistream broadcasting. For this purpose, each stage floor is equipped with a controlled video camera system and monitors focused on not only viewers but actors as well.

The solution was offered by Axis partner Baltic Media Company (BMK), who not only delivered equipment, but also rendered assistance in setting up equipment in coincidence with theatrical performance control systems. BMK worked closely with theatre employees and assisted operatively in development and use of equipment delivered to the theatre. sst

monitoring,” said Ron Demers, Unum corporate security manager. “We needed a solution that would fit our specific building needs and allow for comfortable flow of employees in and out of the offices.”

The Solution After a full evaluation of options, Unum installed its first security revolving door – a Boon Edam Tourlock 180+90 – at their Portland, Maine, location in 2003. The selling points were quite compelling for Demers, “It gave us the same security as a security officer. And, depending on the entrance and the installation costs, we were looking at an ROI of only two to three years.”

To date, Unum has installed 21 Boon Edam Tourlocks at their buildings in Portland, ME; Chattanooga, TN; Columbia, SC; and Worcester, MA.

Benefits With up to 8,000 entries and exits per week at its busiest doors, Demers has been surprised at the large amount of usage and the durability of the product. “If an employee experiences any mechanical issue with the door, we hear about it right away,” Demers said. “Over all of these years, we’ve only had minor maintenance given the usage of the doors.” “Security

now a standard part of our construction package, and we have a real partnership with Boon Edam,” Demers continued. “From the initial sales presentation 12 years ago with now-ceo Mark Borto to today, it’s been great. Mark still considers us his account and when we call into Technical Services, they know exactly who we are. We’re not a huge account, we know, but we’re treated like we are.” Looking forward, Demers and the security team are starting to evaluate all of their building lobbies, and they are considering moving toward a containment area strategy, to augment their higher-level security at each building entrance. sst

complex, as well as the University of Salford and more than 100 commercial businesses. Located at Salford Quays on the banks of Manchester ship canal phase one of the MediaCityUK development, which is spread over 36 acres of the 200-acre site, has seen around £650 million invested. Designed around the specific needs of the media and creative industries, the bespoke community features one

of the biggest HD studio complexes in Europe; commercial offices; 378 apartments; a brand new hotel and a spectacular waterfront public piazza.

The Ideal Solution “As a large commercial environment tailored access control system, the SALTO XS4 and GEO platform solutions are ideal for MediaCityUK,” commented Paul Carr, national

accounts manager of SALTO Systems. “Working in consultation with the many stakeholders on site we designed a highly secure and flexible access control system to meet all of the security requirements of MediaCityUK . The advanced system design of the SALTO data-on-card access control system allows end users across the site to control their buildings in almost real time through the SALTO Virtual Network (SVN). This software allows the standalone locks to read, receive and write information via their operating smart cards. Data is captured from the cards at SVN on-line hot spots located at strategic points in the many buildings which upload and download user related information that is then used to permit, control or deny access,” Carr continued. The XS4 handles, GEO cylinders, panic bars and wall readers control in excess of 500 doors spread across the whole development, with buildings covered including the Orange Tower, Blue Tower, Multi-storey car park, Studio Block, Greenhouse, Public Realm (road blockers, gates and barriers) and

two residential towers. Other users include SIS (Satellite installation services) who have their own SALTO solution but also have access to MediaCityUK doors i.e. they carry access permissions on one card for two systems. This is the same for ITV who also run their own system. Ramesh Gurdev, managing director, SALTO Systems UK, said: “Key control was a major consideration from the outset of this project due to the size of the development and its future expansion potential, so a ‘keyless’ environment was an absolute prerequisite to control access and give MediaCityUK full control over their security requirements.” sst

IP Cameras Provide MissionCritical Data From A Remote Location And Fill A Vital Marketing Role For Remote Fish Farm Mission AgriMarine Technologies Inc. of Comox, B.C., is a producer of innovative aquaculture fish-farming technology. The company uses proprietary, solid-walled floating tanks to meet the public’s growing demand for sustainably raised seafood. However, the fish farms

40

are built in remote marine locations, making it a challenge to monitor their construction. The company also wanted time-lapsed videos of the construction for marketing purposes.

Solution AgriMarine turned to full-service

media integrator Tremain Media to provide monitoring and daily timelapse video of its construction site at Lois Lake, where it was assembling four fish tanks. To provide optimal coverage, both a fixed Axis network camera and a pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) network camera were deployed onsite.

COMMERCIAL & OFFICE SECURITY

The PTZ camera allows AgriMarine to remotely adjust the camera’s angle of view when the location of the tanks change, and the HDTV 1080p resolution provides detailed zooming when needed. Real-time images are stored at the edge on the cameras, on local FTP servers and pushed via satellite to timelapse processing and storage system in the cloud

using traditional net systems. In 2000, they became involved with land-based systems on Vancouver Island and discovered that, while the fish thrived within the tanks, the pump-ashore land-based farms were far too costly. Instead, the company deployed a team of

Case Studies

designers and engineers to develop a solid-wall marine tank for finfish farming in the species’ natural habitat. The eco-friendly, in-water tanks are 3,000 metres in size and designed to reduce energy use, curb environmental impact and improve management of animal health.

The Result Prior to implementing the Axis network cameras, AgriMarine staff needed to travel for hours to retrieve video footage. With remote access, that time is saved, and AgriMarine can use the time-lapse footage and daily recaps to manage the project. Additionally, they can also use the clear and detailed images to support their marketing efforts.

Originally, AgriMarine installed analog cameras to monitor the tanks’ construction, but the tanks were being built in the remote Lois Lake on Vancouver Island. Accessing the site required a threehour ferry ride followed by another hour of driving, and this significantly limited how often their head office could retrieve footage. “During the pilot project, we had to spend half a day getting to the site, so we could only do it every six days,” said Robert Walker, president of AgriMarine Technologies. “This wasn’t acceptable, since we needed more timely information.”

Eyes on the ground and water AgriMarine turned to Tremain Media for help. The Vancouver Islandbased company provides remote video monitoring and daily timelapse solutions that can be accessed over the Internet. They installed an AXIS Q6035-E PTZ Dome Network Camera and an AXIS P3364-VE Network Camera to monitor tank construction through time-lapse images taken at 10-minute intervals.

42

Covering the distance AgriMarine originally wanted to employ a real-time feed, but a constant data stream was too costly to transmit over satellite Internet, and they opted for timelapse video instead. They can, however, activate a live video feed for special events or emergencies.

The high-resolution HDTV 1080p time-lapse video allows the design team to analyze specific details of construction without making additional trips to the site. Because of their ease of installation, the cameras can also be moved without hassle in the case of drift or tidal changes.

Each camera has a 32GB SD card onboard for local edge storage. This data is also backed up to two FTP servers on location and sent via satellite to Tremain Media’s cloudbased visual data system, where it is managed by the company’s Render Engine video management software. From there it is processed into daily time-lapse footage provided to AgriMarine in whatever size or format is needed.

Both cameras target different locations to give a wide view of the farm: the PTZ camera follows tanks as they move, while the fixed camera is installed on a pole with a concrete base that can be moved if required.

“We have a lot of redundancy built into the system. We’re dealing with a mission-critical implementation, and there’s only one chance to get the footage,” Tremain said. “We only use Axis cameras for

our time-lapse and monitoring systems because of their reliability and quality. As a videographer by trade, quality is key to me.”

Marketing in high definition Beyond the ability to monitor construction, AgriMarine found the videos could also be used as an effective marketing tool to raise their profile in the industry. “It’s very exciting. At the same time as we’re building the tanks, we can now show investors and prospects what we’re building,” Walker said. At a trade conference in Abu Dhabi, the time-lapsed video was the focal point of their display. “They found it really drew people to their booth,” Leah Tremain, owner and ceo of Tremain Media. “That type of ‘booth bait’ is really important, because their product isn’t necessarily easy to understand if you don’t see the size and scope of these projects.” sst

New Concert Hall And Conference Centre At The Heart Of Reykjavík Secures Premises With Resilient Access Control System Background One of the most stunning new buildings in Iceland has chosen SALTO GEO electronic cylinder locks to provide a state-of-the-art access control solution as part of its overall security package. Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre is part of an extensive harbour development project in Reykjavik, the East Harbour Project. Designed by Danish architectural firm Henning Larsen Architects and Icelandic architectural firm Batteriid Architects, the building’s design is based on a geometric principle

reminiscent of the crystallised basalt columns commonly found in Iceland. As the name indicates, the overall objective of the project is to expand and revitalise Reykjavík’s eastern harbour with a new downtown plaza, a shopping street, a hotel, residential buildings, educational institutions, and mixed industry. The building is the ideal venue for various concerts and musical events, international conferences,

Berliner Philharmoniker to its halls since opening.

The Challenge Situated slightly apart from Reykjavík’s traditional centre, the building has become a significant visual icon in the city thanks to its stunning design. Harpa´s location means that, to a great extent, the changing climatic and light effects experienced in this most beautiful of Northern cities will be amplified and exposed in the multi faceted exterior of the building, dramatically contrasting the shadow often experienced in the older narrow streets in the rest of the city.

The Solution With regards to internal door security, specifying the correct access control solution was a vitally

important consideration from the outset for the buildings designers. Keen to ensure their cutting edge design incorporated the very latest security innovations they wanted to avoid use of inflexible master key systems. Instead they wanted simplicity, affordability and a fully scalable solution that allowed instant upgrades at any time.

2006 “The GEO system sets the benchmark for access security across many applications and after listening to what the architects and designers wanted to achieve it was the ideal choice for Harpa Concert Hall and Conference Centre,” commented Jesper Buch SALTO Systems business development manager Nordic Countries. «Working

It currently controls over 100 doors in the building with more doors continually being added to the system. The operating technology of the cylinders is DESfire EV1 and to ensure access is never compromised SALTO’s patented Data-On-Card SVN™ (SALTO Virtual Network) system is also incorporated as standard. This allows the stand-alone GEO cylinders and locks to upload, store and download the latest access information as people use their DESfire EV1 RFID cards throughout the building. The cancelled key list can be updated, key cards can be cancelled and audit trail reports can be downloaded at will, all of which delivers additional security and operating benefits compared to standard locking systems.

The Results “With their ability to customise

EMBEDDED VISION

Embedded Vision Is Everywhere‌. If you know where to look

By: Niall Jenkins, Associate Director for Video Surveillance, IHS Technology

What is Embedded Vision? Embedded vision can literally save your life. But this sophisticated technology that marries embedded systems and computer vision is just beginning to scratch the surface of its true potential. In the algorithm-rich world of embedded vision, faces, gestures and behaviors can be detected and interpreted by electronic systems, and powerful microprocessors can combine with advanced machine vision to make sense of images. Endowed with the gift of embedded vision, newly sighted machines can perform astounding feats of visual interpretation. True, the embedded vision space is still small at present. Even in the established markets of automotive, industrial automation, physical security and business intelligence, embedded vision last year attained a global penetration rate of just 11 per cent of the total addressable market. And by 2018, levels will inch up to only 12 per cent. But significant potential lies ahead, especially if the correct mix of applications and devices can be assembled. By 2018, shipments will expand to 14 million units. In the automotive market, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) use embedded vision technology for potentially life-saving applications, helping vehicles avoid fatal accidents. The algorithms work by recognizing that an object is approaching more quickly than it should. If the driver does not react to the warnings, the system can even apply braking automatically to avoid or reduce the speed of the collision.

Embedded vision can also be found in the manufacturing process. Machine-vision algorithms, which form part of the industrial automation industry, are used to identify and inspect products on a production line, systematizing the manufacturing and quality-control process.

In the Physical Security Market Meanwhile, in the physical security market, embedded vision can program the monitoring of video surveillance systems through a technology called video content analysis. Intelligent video-analytics algorithms can alert operators to scenarios such as perimeter breaches, wrong-way movements and left-baggage situations, allowing a more reliable human response to likely threats Embedded vision is also beginning to gain traction in consumer applications. The most high-profile example is Microsoft’s Kinect, which combines embedded vision algorithms with an infrared projector responsible for depth perception, allowing the user to interact with the Kinect through gesture recognition. Augmented reality, another embedded vision application, is also increasingly found on smartphones and tablets, combining the real world with the virtual—at least on the device’s screen—with applications spanning the advertising, gaming and teaching realms.

The Future Aside from its current applications, embedded vision can also be harnessed for far-seeing, innovative solutions. Across the majority of technology markets, the opportunities for disruptive embedded vision applications are wide-ranging and potentially groundbreaking. For instance, breakthroughs in face recognition and identification algorithms could lead to the types of recognition and tracking applications currently glamorized in television shows like “CSI” and “24.” And while the embedded vision market is still some distance away from achieving this, reliable face-identification algorithms would, in fact, be a game-changer for the physical security industry. KEEPING THE SKIES SAFE WITH SMITHS DETECTION

SECURiTY Feature

Introduction The tragic turn of events on 11 September 2001 changed civil air transportation forever. Faced with the threat of a similar attack, there was a global wave of beefed up security measures to protect airports, planes and passengers. According to the International Air Transport Association (IATA), the greatest legacy of 9/11 was its influence on airport security and passenger experience. A total of US$7.4 billion was spent on security in 2011. And this year, the world aviation security market will be worth US$19.48 billion, according to projections from analyst group visiongain.

Introduction By Nathan Manzi, Vice President, Asia-Pacific, Smiths Detection

However, even with the massive outlay on security measures, civil aviation remains a high-value target for terrorists. The June attack on the Jinnah International Airport in Karachi, Pakistan this year saw terrorists infiltrate the airport to hijack parked aircraft. The months of June and July witnessed the tightening of security screening in airports of Europe and the US following intelligence reports of explosives that could bypass security checkpoints. Despite the attacks and danger, air transportation remains the most efficient mode of travelling in the globalised world. Industry sectors such as business, commercial, cargo, manufacturing and tourism depend heavily on air transportation.

Asia as a rising force Thanks to Asia’s economic growth, the region is set to become the epicentre of aviation. As early as 2009, Asia had overtaken North America to become the largest air travel market with 647 million passengers. Half of the world’s traffic growth over the next 20 years will be to, from, or within the Asia-Pacific region. By 2030, it will be a world leader in air traffic, with a market share of 38 per cent.

To match the booming air traffic volumes in the region, countries such as Singapore and Thailand have launched initiatives to extend and construct infrastructure such as airport terminal buildings. This, together with a strong replacement cycle, globalisation of trade, and freight volumes, is expected to support the growth of the aviation security industry. In addition, more stringent requirements from major regulatory bodies are set to increase the sophistication of security equipment.

56

Security Solutions Today • January / February 2015

The aviation security landscape in Asia Today, the protection of transportation systems presents unique security challenges that require specialised equipment. Governments have had to concern themselves with increasing cases of cross-border security breaches such as the smuggling of explosives, weapons and radiological materials. Additionally there is the protection of trade across borders and ensuring the correct customs clearances are applied to goods in transit. The aviation

KEEPING THE SKIES SAFE WITH SMITHS DETECTION

security market has to not just be innovative to stay ahead of evolving threats, but understand the risks and pain points of its client base as well. For example, 3D printing technologies have advanced far along where guns can now be manufactured. This is where airport authorities would be severely tested in their abilities to detect such threats. Our eqo millimetre-wave people screener uses non-ionising technology to complete a scan in real time to locate concealed weapons, including 3D printed guns, explosives or contraband. For us, aviation security is a one-catch phrase but is grouped into eight comprehensive threat areas to protect customers:

• • • • • • • •

Air cargo screening Passenger checkpoint Checked baggage screening Airport check in Customs screening Staff entrance Building protection Emergency response

Air cargo screening provides the highest levels of security for all cargo passing through airports. Equipment in this category screen for threats or contraband in crates, palletised freight and LD-3 airfreight containers. The screening products also need be accredited under the US TSA Air Cargo Screening Mandate to ensure that there is minimal impact on the logistics chain. Meanwhile at passenger checkpoints, security equipment ranges from automatic baggage checks to rapid trace detection of explosives to people screening. The HI-SCAN 6040-2 is an advanced dual-view X-ray inspection system for automatic bulk and liquid explosive detection. It utilises proven Heimann X-ray technology to automatically detect explosive materials and generate reliable, high quality dual-view images. Checked baggage screening offers another layer of security by screening hold baggage using high-throughput X-ray systems for automatic explosives detection, stand-alone or built into conveyor systems. Meanwhile, equipment such

SECURiTY Feature

as X-ray inspection and explosives detection systems are designed to support the airport check-in process. While terrorism is the main threat to civil aviation, smuggling is another priority area for the authorities. During customs screening, customs officers can check for narcotics or contraband on arriving passengers with a mix of x-ray inspection and trace detection swabbing systems for baggage or personal effects. Networked systems ensure that all operations are well-monitored Besides the above commonly known threat areas, the protection of buildings is another important aspect of aviation security. During critical situations such as the accidental or deliberate release of chemicals, building functions such as heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems need to be able to shut down. The authorities will need to be able to monitor all activities with an intelligent video network so they can respond to emergencies rapidly. And how do authorities know that vehicles moving from landside to airside are not smuggling threats or contraband onto the airport apron area? Screening vehicles with specifically designed vehicle scanning X-ray systems allows airport security to quickly and effectively monitor the equipment in the airside environment.

The way forward for aviation security in Asia Overall, the various geographical markets within Asia hold excellent long-term growth prospects for the aviation security industry. Rising passenger volumes will drive new airport and infrastructure investment in Asia and authorities will look to employ a layered approach and invest in both their technology and their people. At Smiths Detection, our products and services fit neatly into such a layered approach, so depending on the application in the overall security approach, we will have products that will assist security professionals with doing their job quickly, safely and to a high standard. After all, we strive to “bring technology to life” to make the world safer, healthier and more productive. For more information, please visit www.smithsdetection. com. ssT

cities such as Florianópolis, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and etc. Over tens of thousands pieces of Dahua devices have been adopted in the whole project, and below is an example with safe city project in Florianópolis.

The Challenge Florianópolis, the capital of Santa Catarina, is known for its beautiful beaches and high quality of life. Its pillar economies are information technology, tourism and services. Although it is revealed as one of the highest economic well-being city in Brazil, a less-developed region does exist as well, just like any city elsewhere in the world. Naturally, the products and deployment are required to be different and to-theactual-condition under the goal of two “M”s — to minimize crimes and maximize citizens’ safety.

University In North Carolina Upgrades Security At Recreational Facilities Background NC State has approximately 2,500 faculty and staff and 35,000 students who are members of the university’s recreational facilities. Formerly, this large number of users could come and go from six am to 11 pm, seven days a week, simply by presenting a valid ID. The original gymnasium facility was built in 1961, with an addition built in 1987. In 2007, the brand new Carmichael recreational centre was built. Both the renovated older gym building and the new Carmichael facility are next to each other.

Spivey set out looking for their new solution.

The Challenge The two buildings presented several challenges for adequately monitoring and controlling access. When coming through the main entrances, users were supposed to stop and present their ID to the staff behind the desk (staff are also students). If too many users

“We needed to be able to control access to our recreational space, but from a risk standpoint, there are heavy weights, machinery and an aquatics centre in the facility,” said Jason Spivey, associate director of University Recreation. Spivey’s supervisor, Eric Hawkes, director of University Recreation, came to NC State from Florida Atlantic University, where he had employed security turnstiles and saw the same need at NC State’s recreational facilities. In 2012, Hawkes and

The Solution After assessing their needs and

looking at alternatives, Spivey and Hawkes decided to install Boon Edam Speedlane 996DA optical turnstiles at the main entrances of both buildings for consistency (and also because all of the lockers were in one of the buildings). The automatic drop arm models were recommended by the building’s architect as they had a minimal footprint and a clean aesthetic look that matched the lobbies. The 996DA works with the existing

access control system and can work with any future biometric system NC State may install. Staff still verify incoming users’ IDs and then push a remote touchscreen console called BoonTouch to open a turnstile and let users into a facility. Eventually, when a biometric solution may be deployed, students and faculty can volunteer to participate without a human to check them, and they can then just go through the turnstile. This feature is expected to increase use of biometrics

The benefits to the university and the many users of the recreational facilities are apparent to all concerned. Access to secure areas is now physically controlled. There is now a clear, visual deterrent discouraging anyone from attempting to slip into secure areas. Reception staff have a greatly reduced burden of controlling access and preventing non- members from getting in, especially during crowded periods. Finally, risk of injury to non-authorized users has been reduced significantly. “The Boon Edam turnstiles are meeting our many security needs. The look of the entry was important for us and the fact that the turnstiles could integrate with a future biometrics system was also a key consideration,” Spivey concluded. sst

Department Of Emergency Services In The United States Finds Perfect System To Safeguard Cell Tower Sites Background In the United States, there are over 100,000 cell phone tower sites. These locations often house expensive and critical emergency, telecommunications and other radio technologies. Cell towers are an essential part of the nation’s critical communications infrastructure — without cell and radio connectivity, emergency communications to contact and direct first responders would be significantly impaired.

The Challenge Chester County, one of the three original Pennsylvania counties created by William Penn in 1682, is located in the south-eastern corner of the state. The Chester County Department of Emergency Services (DES) has approximately 32 cell tower sites and, until recently, the most secure form of technology used to guard these sites was lock and key or a simple keypad. DES was experiencing an increase of incidents of copper theft, vandalism, and graffiti at their cell tower sites. In addition, DES staff had no way to grant access to technicians arriving at sites unannounced and no audit trail of who was coming

and going at any of the sites. There are many solutions on the market to deal with these pressing needs to upgrade security, but the county had a significant constraint — it was not possible to install network connections at each of the widely-distributed sites within their budget and time limitations.

The Solution Officials from DES sought ideas to solve their wide array of security challenges. The Protection Bureau, an SDM 100 company located in Chester County, had recently completed the ECKey certification course and demonstrated the ECKey EK7 Stand-alone Access System with hosted VIZpin® Visitor/Access Management to the decision makers at DES. The DES decided to install the EK7 reader with VIZ-pin at approximately 20 of the county’s cell tower sites because the solution offers a wide range of features and benefits few other systems could match for the cost. With ECKey, DES officials use their cell phones to gain and grant access to any of the cell tower sites; there are no keys, fobs, or card keys; installation and administrative costs are a fraction of competing systems; and data associated with each site is available in the cloud from each approved official’s smart phone. No more driving to each site, no more limited data access from a dedicated PC. sst

College In Australia Heightens Security Within Campus Background The importance of security cannot be over emphasized in providing a safe and secure environment in which both students and staff may learn and work in an environment which minimizes any risk to their personal safety. Each campus is different however, and each must develop a strategy tailored to its own unique circumstances. The measures used to achieve this should reflect the character of the college and its educational needs as well as the demands of good security. What is appropriate for one campus may not suit another. Each will have its own unique problems and requirements.

The Challenge In the case of Santa Maria College in Attadale, a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia, this meant addressing the need to replace a licensed physical key system, which was reaching end of life and had become expensive to manage amongst the large numbers of staff particularly if keys got lost or mislaid. If a key was lost a staff member was given another key and/or sometimes doors were retrofitted with a new lock. As a result door keys proliferated and although there had never been a real problem, no one knew when an errant key might fall into malicious hands. The college, staff, students and parents expected a better system than that, and the college wanted to be on the leading edge, setting

68

a good impression as well as controlling who could enter its buildings. Chris Dawson, property manager for Santa Maria College, said “Due to the limitations experienced historically with our physical key system the college was keen to explore alternative options and these eventually led us to SALTO and their SVN (SALTO Virtual Network) technology.

The Solution When we were considering the various solutions on the market it became clear that we needed a system that could be easily deployed on to multiple doors that were not always accessible to physical cabling infrastructure. We also needed a system that could be extended to include our lift elevator so that we could provide access to disabled staff and/ or children at the college. SALTO was able to provide this capability using their multi-relay output control board. In addition their smart card credential technology meant that we could also use supplied cards for multiple applications such as providing staff access to on site printers. This all helped to present us with even more functionality and provide us with an excellent return on our investment. Neil Armstrong, SALTO business development manager (WA) commented, “Having decided our XS4 standalone battery-operated electronic locks were for them, the order from Santa Maria College was put through our local

doors and online control units. The cards build up ‘oncard’ audit trails through normal use giving the college complete control over access and enabling the movement of students, staff and visitors to be monitored 24/7 as well as controlling who can access what, where and when at all times. dealer Security and Key. They subsequently installed the product to 59 doors throughout the college including to classroom doors, faculty building doors and perimeter doors.” The XS4 electronic handle needs no hard wiring and provides a wire-free networked electronic locking solution with an impressive range of features.

The Benefits Its SVN (SALTO Virtual Network) provides the means to operate in an almost totally keyless environment because of its unique ability to distribute card holder and system information to access controlled doors by using the card to upload and download information between offline

The key cards can also be programmed to allow access to specific rooms or areas within selected periods only, with the doors auto locking at pre-specified times if required. And unlike the former licensed physical key system, if key security is breached due to the loss or theft of a card it can be instantly deleted without the need or cost of rekeying or changing locks – saving the college time and money. Chris Dawson concluded “We very much like the features that the SALTO SVN system gives us and we find the audit trail facility, with every SALTO lock storing up to 1000 events on a non-volatile memory, especially useful as our previous keyed system was not able to provide this. With the system key cards are also very easy and comparatively cheap to manage compared to their physical counterparts.” sst

WHY SAFE CITIES ARE NOT NECESSARILY SMART CITIES

Why Safe Cities Are Not Necessarily Smart Cities

WHY SAFE CITIES ARE NOT NECESSARILY SMART CITIES

however, have a more concise focus, concerned only with the security, safety and operations of the city to protect its physical assets and citizens. The safe city concept revolves around multi-agency collaboration using a consolidated information technology (IT) platform that integrates public safety information obtained through sensors, such as video surveillance, physical access control, gunshot detection and CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, explosive).

By Paul Bremner, Analyst, Video Surveillance, IHS Technology

Introduction The terms “safe city” and “smart city” are often used interchangeably. However, the two concepts differ dramatically in their scope, and a safe city is not necessarily a smart city—and vice versa. Smart cities cover broad topics such as transport, energy, physical infrastructure and many other smart terms, including smart metering, smart street lighting, as well as traffic management and air-quality monitoring, to name a few. Safe cities,

Another import differentiator between safe and smart cities lies in the main market drivers. The implementation of safe city projects is driven by regional factors, such as political instability in areas like the Middle East that then reverberate across other global regions; or anti-terrorism funding in the U.S. and across Asia-Pacific.

Factors contributing to the adoption of Safe City projects Broadly, however, there are seven factors contributing to the adoption of safe city projects. These factors are security threats, budget cuts affecting staffing levels, fostering economic growth, data sharing, crime, political considerations, and replacement of existing video surveillance systems. The countries with the most potential to adopt safe city projects are China, India, the U.S. and Singapore, with

SECURITY FeaturE

New Zealand, Sweden, Qatar, Norway, Pakistan and Colombia also very likely to do so. All scored highly on the safe cities index developed by IHS; the higher the score on the index, the greater the chance that country would adopt safe city projects. The index was constructed by taking into account factors such as a country’s economy, economic risks, urban population, security threats and political stability. While the concepts and market drivers across safe cities and smart cities differ, the stakeholders for both are similar, including law enforcement, emergency services, civil defense and utilities. Ultimately, the desire for safe cities is being driven by the larger socioeconomic forces that metropolises—and countries—are experiencing, such as population growth and movement into cities. For the first time in history, more people are living in urban rather than rural areas, and such wholesale migration is creating new pressures on cities to become safer areas. In turn, these changes demand that urban leaders and stakeholders invest in ways to increase a city’s efficiency and improve the quality of life, while at the same time providing sustainable infrastructure and services. GETTING SECURE IN THE NEW YEAR

GETTING SECURE IN THE NEW YEAR By: James Kelly, Chief Executive Officer, British Security Industry Association

By: James Kelly, Chief Executive Officer, British Security Industry Association

Introduction With the various threats and risks that we face day to day in modern society, it has become increasingly more important for us to feel as safe and secure in all aspects of our lives. As such, it could be said that employers have a duty of care to their employees to make them feel protected within the workplace. In challenging economic times, the need for affordable robust security measures in order to minimise potential risks has never been greater. Here, James Kelly, Chief Executive of the British Security Industry Association, discusses just some of the security solutions available to help businesses get secure for the New Year.

74

Security Solutions Today • January / February 2015

The most effective security strategies tend to be those that integrate various different aspects of security systems and technologies, thus ensuring that all possible threats are accounted for.

Physical Security Perhaps one of the most essential parts of any integrated approach is that of physical security measures, particularly when placed at the perimeter. As the first layer of a security plan, effective perimeter security measures can make it extremely difficult for intruders to breach the perimeter and enter the site – providing peace of mind that valuable office equipment is secure on the premises

GETTING SECURE IN THE NEW YEAR

outside of hours. Effective perimeter security can be as simple as ensuring that doors and locks within the premises are of a high standard. Good quality five-lever mortise locks should be fitted to doors, along with high quality locks fitted to all windows of a premises. Doors should be strong and in good condition, complying with British Standard PAS 24-1 ‘Doors of Enhanced Security’. It is important that business owners regularly review their locks and doors to ensure that they are meeting with the necessary standards.

Access control While physical security solutions can help keep a business safe outside of hours, it is also important to feel safe during office hours as well. For some, monitoring and controlling who can actually gain access to an office can be extremely important. To help with this, access control systems provide the ability to control, monitor and restrict the movement of people, assets, or vehicles, in. out and round a building. The average office will experience a regular footfall of people coming in and out of the premises and in some large premises, intruders could potentially fall under the radar and blend in with regular office workers, possibly allowing them to steal valuable equipment or gain access to confidential information. Access control systems, therefore, are designed to allow access only to authorised people – whether it be into the entire building or specific areas. Such measures can be as simple as paper-based logging systems that grant access for temporary visitors or more advanced cards that utilise radio frequency identification (RFID) chips for proximity reading of card details and subsequent activation of gates, turnstiles and vehicle barriers on the premises. Alongside security, access control systems can have further added benefits. From a human resources point of view, the information gathered from the badge/token technology can be used to record employee hours. Such information can be processed against working hours – useful for both temporary and permanent staff – in

EXPERT INSIGHTS

real-time to feed transactions through to the company’s payroll. Time and attendance software can also help employers keep in line with European Working Time regulations, plan holidays and record absences.

CCTV Another method to ensure around the clock protection is through the employment of CCTV systems, whether it be inside or outside of a building. Simply having a CCTV camera visible on-site can act as a successful deterrent for thieves or trespassers, while monitoring the activity of personnel and visitors. The CCTV sector is constantly changing and improving in order to meet consumer requirements. One particular advancement that can be useful to an office owner is that of IP technology. By linking cameras to IP networks through an Ethernet – whether it be Large Area Network (LAN), a Wide Area Network (WAN) or a Virtual Private Network (VPN). By using secure internet and Ethernet connections, managers can use their own laptops in order to monitor a property should they have to leave it for any significant length of time, thus eliminating the cost of having to employ someone to monitor the cameras at the property at all times. In fact, IP cameras carry various benefits, a significant one being the way in which they can deal with difficult lighting conditions. Advances in IP technology have made way for clearer, crisper images by combining normal shutter speeds in dark areas with high shutter speeds in light areas into a single high quality image, avoiding any under or over exposure. In terms of cost efficiency, CCTV cameras do not always have to be switched on 24-hours a day. When used in conjunction with motion sensors, CCTV cameras can only start rolling when movement is detected. For particularly large office buildings, this can be especially useful in areas that are not often in use and may not need to be monitored so closely during all hours of the day.

GETTING SECURE IN THE NEW YEAR

Information destruction While ensuring the protection of people and valuable assets is at the forefront of any comprehensive security plan, one aspect that can sometimes be overlooked is the safe disposal of confidential information, whether it be regarding an employee or a particular aspect of a business. If confidential information falls into the wrong hands, it could be detrimental to a business’s reputation and can even result in fraud. As such, it is extremely important that organisation waste paper and dataprocessing products – such as hard drives, CDs, memory sticks and DVDs are destroyed safely and efficiently by a professional firm. In early 2013, research by accountancy firm KPMG revealed a startling rise in identity fraud over the previous year, with the value of the crime more than doubling in value to £26.3million. The research also disturbingly suggested that insider fraud was to blame for more than 80% of fraud-related financial losses in 2012. Simply disposing of information via municipal refuse collection or waste paper reprocessing is not good enough, as neither method generally involves any kind of secure handling. As such, it is extremely important to choose an information destruction company that meets with certain specific standards, guaranteeing that the service being provided is secure and professional. One such standard is that of the key European standard for information destruction, EN151713. The standard outlines a range of requirements that an information destruction company must meet, including having an administration office on-site where records and documentation are kept for conducting business. The company’s premises should also be isolated for any other business or activities operating on the same site. Along with meeting with the key European standard, companies should also comply with the essential British Standard BS8470. This details the secure destruction of information and includes the identification of product

76

specific shredding sizes, guaranteeing that information is destroyed to the point of irreparability. BSIA information destruction companies are inspected to both of these standards, amongst many other important principles, thus making them reliable service providers.

Security Consultancies It can be a difficult process deciding on the best security strategies to put in place in any building. The nature of the work conducted onsite and the individual threats and risks that a business may face determines what security measures will be required for each individual premises. Making the most informed choices when choosing different technologies and security methods can be a daunting task, particularly for those who are not familiar with all the different technologies available on the market. Specialist security services – such as security consultants – can help with this. Security consultancies can guide whoever is in charge or procuring the security solutions and advise them on the best security measures that will be most useful. A consultant will conduct a thorough risk assessment of a premises, allowing them to provide essential advice on security reviews and audits, the development of security policies and strategies, system design, tender management and security awareness training. Working closely with their clients, consultants are able to identify threats and ensure that business continuity is addressed and possible detrimental corners are not cut.

Sourcing a Supplier Whether choosing just one security measure or a multitude of solutions to secure a business, the most important factor is that products and services are chosen from a reputable supplier. Members of the BSIA offer a high quality service and all meet with the essential British and European standards for their product or service. AXIS ANNOUNCES INNOVATIVE SURVEILLANCE SOLUTION WITH FULL 360° OVERVIEW & DETAILED ZOOM

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

Axis Announces Innovative Surveillance Solution With Full 360° Overview & Detailed Zoom

A

xis Communications, the world leader in network video, has just announced AXIS Q6000-E, an outdoor-ready 360-degree network camera that integrates seamlessly with the AXIS Q60-E Series of PTZ dome network cameras, providing a unique surveillance solution. With just a single click, operators can optically zoom in on details of interest with high precision while at the same time being able to maintain an overview of large areas of up to 20.000m² (215,000 sq. ft.) – about the size of four football fields. This makes the AXIS Q6000-E ideal for city surveillance applications such as monitoring of public squares and parking lots, as well as food courts in shopping malls and other open areas. “The AXIS Q6000-E addresses the need for a simple way to monitor a wide area and, simultaneously, be able to optical zoom in on details,” said regional country manager of Axis Communications, Ivan Tjahjadi. “The seamless integration with AXIS Q60-E Series of outdoor PTZ cameras provides a smart, innovative and space-efficient solution offering new and unique video surveillance possibilities.” This new product will open up new opportunities to solve a common problem, for example in the city surveillance field where there is a need for both a PTZ camera to provide detail, and for a full overview camera to cover the entire area. A single click on any object in AXIS Q6000-E, using the one-click PTZ control feature, will trigger the AXIS Q60-E allowing operators to optically zoom in on the specific

object of interest. The use of two screens gives a full 360° overview from AXIS Q6000-E, and a zoomed-in view from AXIS Q60-E, providing operators with a high level of detail while simultaneously being able to maintain an overview of the entire monitored area. AXIS Q6000-E provides multiple, individually configurable video streams in H.264 compression to greatly optimize bandwidth and storage without compromising image quality. Motion JPEG is also supported for increased flexibility. Any AXIS Q60-E camera is quickly and easily mounted inside the AXIS Q6000-E, allowing also existing AXIS Q60-E installations to be upgraded to monitor wide areas, while simultaneously capturing every detail of interest, with just one click. There’s no need for any mounting brackets or extra equipment as AXIS Q6000-E uses the same brackets and network cable as the AXIS Q60-E, minimizing time and cost of installation. Furthermore, AXIS Q6000-E is supplied with Power over Ethernet Plus (PoE+) through AXIS Q60-E, eliminating the need for power cables. AXIS Q6000-E is supported by the industry’s largest base of video management software through the Axis Application Development Partner Program. The camera includes support for AXIS Camera Companion, AXIS Camera Application Platform, ONVIF specification for interoperability of network video products and AXIS Video Hosting System (AVHS) with One-Click Camera Connection. AXIS Q6000-E is planned to be available in Q4 2014 through Axis distribution channels. For more information, please visit: www.axis.com sst

STRATEL INTRODUCES ALL-NEW ACTIVE TRACK DEVICE

Stratel Introduces All-New Active Track Device

A

ctive Track is the only realtime personal tracking device featuring an RFID reader, two-way voice communication, panic button, on-board GPS and along with anti-sabotage feature. Active Track is ideal for the close supervision of persons: VIPs, security guards, lone workers, cleaning services workers, asset transportation personnel, parking operators and security monitoring companies providing mobile patrol and response service. Active Track offers the following advantages: Real-time reporting of on-site clocking’s Conventional guard tour systems only allow data to be viewed once the handheld unit is returned and downloaded at the office. Active Track is the only product offering real-time reporting of clocking’s done by personnel at remote sites. With Active Track your customers know in real-time, if the guard arrived on time at the designated clocking station; if

82

the guard did not turn up, if the guard clocked late; if the guard missed a checkpoint; if the guard is sleeping. Each clocking typically takes just two seconds to reach the monitoring room, using the integrated GPRS modem. Panic button feature for guard protection Provide safety and protection to the guard, especially during night patrol as the guard may be threatened. Active Track comes with a built-in panic button to call for help. The signal takes seconds via GPRS to reach the monitoring station and is interpreted as a request to send reinforcement.

Track allows all data communications to be made in split seconds at a very low cost. Active View web based viewing Active View is a web based application to provide event information to owners and managers to keep track of the whereabouts of their personnel from any web enabled device. Using a simple web browser, users can view on-line the locations of their staff as well as receive notifications of irregular events like checkpoints not clocked at designated time, sabotage attempts, incidents reporting and panic alerts.

Highly robust handheld unit with anti-sabotage feature and IP rating Guards are not angels and often try to sabotage their guard tour device to avoid following the assigned routine. Active Track comes with IP67 rating, is water resistant and shock resistant. Any attempt to cause excessive shock is recorded with date and time as well as reported to the monitoring station. Integrated voice communication with the remote control room Using conventional guard tour systems, guards are provided with a mobile phone to maintain communication. Very often, the phone usage is abused by the guards by making personal calls. With Active Track, mobile phones are no longer needed because the device comes with built-in voice communication. To prevent abuse, Active Track only allows the calling of pre-designated numbers (typically the control room). Simply press the special ‘Call Me’ button on the device to initiate the call.

RFID Tags The location tags used are based on RFID technology, allowing the handheld unit to read the ID of each button within 3-4cm range without making any contact.

Geo Fencing It is possible to track and monitor the position of GPS users and automatically receive a notification if the user crosses the boundary of a pre-determined zone. GPS tracking Active Track comes with geographical tracking and viewing of personnel’s movement on Google Maps from any browser. Because it uses A-GPS (Assisted GPS), tracking of the device is possible both indoors and outdoors. A-GPS helps by delivering satellite data such as accurate time and satellite status to the GPS receiver. Active Track and Active View are distributed in South East Asia by Stratel (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd.

MICROENGINE TECHNOLOGY LAUNCHES POE POWERED ENCRYPTED IP ONE DOOR ACCESS CONTROLLER: P1000I

PRODUCT SPOTLIGHT

MicroEngine Technology Launches PoE Powered Encrypted IP One Door Access Controller: P1000i

M

icroEngine Technology, a trusted brand in Integrated Security Solutions in Malaysia and Singapore with plenty of experience in many large-scale projects, has just launched the PoE powered encrypted IP one door access controller P1000i with an on-board integrated PoE power supply circuit with charger and dedicated Fire Alarm Input. People are more sensitive about the environmental impact of their actions, and are more interested in using greener products. In security systems, Power over Ethernet (PoE) is one of the solutions to this. PoE is a technology that provides both data and power connections in one cable. Doing so minimizes the number of wires that must be strung in order to install the network and power. Hence the result is more cost-effective, there is less downtime, it is easier to manage and maintain, there is better configurability and greater installation flexibility than with the traditional wiring. The P1000i PoE Access Controller supports MicroEngine’s in-house PLATO readers on RS485 connections, which gives you the option of multiple mode of readers only, reader + keypad or a reader + keypad + colour LCD operation, which means the door, can be configured to operate on different entry access modes at any time. The PT1000i PoE Access Controller has four supervised inputs, one for door sensors, one for the push button. The other two are general-purpose inputs which can be used as alarm inputs or event triggered inputs. It also has a built in DEDICATED Tamper Switch input and Fire Alarm input for higher standard requirements. In addition, the IP communication is encrypted with AES128 with dynamic key exchange to increase security. P1000i supports both push and pull communication methods. On top of this, it provides two Wiegand / ABA reader inputs that support 64 bits card numbers for better security, the more digits it can read, the lower possibility of reading duplicate card numbers. This will reduce the chances of card number duplicates in large card based installations. P1000i supports up to 10,000 card-user databases and 50,000 transaction records. The PLATO reader has the options of Prox, Mifare and Mifare DESFire. For more information, please visit www.microengine.net. sst
