Chapter 1
Armenian Church
So today was the first day as a class we went to visit the St. Leon Armenian Cathedral that was built in September 11,2010. This church was created by a carver from Armenia that came to the U.S. to build this beautiful church. At this church you will see that on the sides of the church they have cravings done by the person who came from Armenia and each one has its own meaning behind it. One of the cross rocks that were done was dedicated to the first christian battle ever in 451 A.D.
If you walk in to see the paintings it shows a mosaic art of all 50 churches to show the different churches around the world. The pomegranates that you see around this church is a symbol of the Armenian churches and our nation.
Throughout this part of the church you will also see paintings that were given that show drawn paintings of some special churches.
One piece that I loved was a drawing of a cross that showed what the craving looked like and symbolized the gift to preserve Armenian culture that was drawn by Richard Hrachia Tashjian. Looking at this piece you start to really think about what the Armenian culture really is about and see how much of a family we are all around the world.
The glass at the bottom of the church was made so that people in the church can get natural light and at night it has a beam of lights so when someone walks in they can see the church. On the walls of the church it has cravings of crosses with peoples names on it.
The big Rock that has 1915 on it was dedicated to the Armenian genocide. The rock was broken on purpose to show the ritual of trying to break the Armenian culture. The Armenian Genocide happened in 1915 when Turkey killed 1.5 million people. Till this day we have an Armenian Genocide walk to fight for the recognition of what Turkey had done to Armenians.
The Museum part of this church shows all the artifacts that were given to show the tradition clothing, paintings, jewelry, the bible (Armenian saying), and much more.
Outside of the church the have pomegranate tree with everyones name that was either a surviver of the Armenian genocide and they do fundraising for children to realize that it was their home. It’s important for a child to know his or her name is on the church to feel that it’s their house after many years.
Chapter 2
Getty Villa
The next chapter into finding more unique design structures in Los Angeles. Visiting the Getty Villa was one of the best experiences yet. Not only did we get a private showing of how they create the museum and what goes into the process on an exhibition.
Facing challenges on materials used and typography thats done. Throughout this museum we got to see photography that was done and one piece I really enjoyed to look at and read about was “ Flávio in Denver” series. Seeing these group of images really took me back when my family member had suffered from cancer. This story that is told touches your heart in so many ways on what kids went through in their life.
This part of the museum we got to see the museums studio, where the workers do their creative thinking and build mock ups to show how they will set up the art work in the museum.
It takes a lot of thinking and process that goes into this. They had a bookshelf with tons of books and foam core. The process that happens to create the perfect setup in the gallery they use recycled products and foam core that shows the gallery and what each section would be about. They have a calendar that they color coordinate for each project and due date so that they are always on track.
Chapter 3
Automotive Musuem
The Automotive Museum shows the impact of the global life and culture using Los Angeles. It shows a multi-dimensional society that thrives while it progresses. Automotive Museum has exterior features that have stainless-steel ribbon assembled, made of a 100 tons of 14-gauge type 304 steel. Looking at the cars in this museum it was so interesting to see how each car told a different story.
The very top of the museum was organized with classic cars from famous movies. It also had a huge mural on the wall of Los Angeles and shows how LA traffic is. The colors on this mural uses warm and cool colors to show the different aspects of how LA traffic can be. It also had a place where kids can go play and draw, the theme of this playground was the cars movie. The second floor was about racing cars that were the fastest.
They even had a game area where people can experience racing. The last floor had cars that were about electricity and how they were with either sunlight that hits or ran by a computer system. The structure of the building had a 3D look with waves that looks like a texture and give you a feeling of how racing or how driving in a movie is.
Throughout this museum on the 3rd floor there was an old fashion Wells Fargo Bank car that you were able to interact with and take pictures on.
This was the coolest part of the museum being able to have your kids go in and trace car images from the movie cars was such a neat idea to have apart of the museum.
They even had a color wheel type of information on the wall so people can read and see what the differences are in each category.
Chapter 4
LA Tart Pits
The La Brea Tar Pits give you an experience of a life time to show what colors, patterns, and textures can feel like.
From the outside it give a vibe of an igloo look. When you walk in you get the feeling like you are in a dream.
Seeing the different colors form and the use of warm and cool colors. The use of hue and saturation, even gradients is just simply amazing.
Chapter 5
Neon Museum
The neon museum was by far my favorite museum out of all the ones we visited. Seeing how signages are made with neon lighting was amazing. They recycle signages that are no longer used and even have workshops where kids can build their own neon signage and take it home with them. Seeing the different color themes that were used in each signage was really cool to see. To me making neon signage is another form of making art.
Creating this typeface was probably the hard part to do. Creating curves and designs is not the easiest thing to due.
This part of the Neon Museum I thought was the coolest part on seeing how these get made. How it seems like it uses electricty to make the movements.
