There’s adventure in our nature. 2012 was a year filled with natural “growing pains� for the Sedgwick County Zoo. A year that embarked on serious strategic planning for the future; while maintaining the legacy our founders built more than 40 year ago. Visitors witnessed many exhibits and areas of the Zoo going through routine maintenance and natural upgrades as time and Mother Nature takes its toll on our infrastructures and campus. These included new roofs, new doors, bridge repairs, path changes, among many others.
All the while, we continued to see strong commitment from our community in membership sales and annual visitors to the Zoo. This commitment to the preservation and understanding of wildlife invigorates our passion to be a leader among Zoos and certainly to be one of the best attractions the state of Kansas has to offer. Throughout the pages of this annual report, you will be reminded again and again the awesome adventure we have at the Zoo. This is due much in part to the vision and leadership of the employees, volunteers, county commissioners and the Zoological Board of Trustees. In addition, the overwhelming financial support and loyalty of our financial partners continues to amaze me. Thank you for your support this year and for the exciting years that lie ahead. Volunteers In 2012 Sedgwick County Zoo had the privilege of working with a total of 971 volunteers who donated 38,882 hours.
Volunteers help the Zoo by giving their time which in turn saves the Zoo money. The cumulative hours donated by the Sedgwick County Zoo volunteers in 2012 were equal to 19 fulltime employees. Thanks to all of you for what you do to help make the Zoo the No. 1 outdoor family tourist attraction in Kansas.
2012 Volunteers of the Year David Knofflock, Sedgwick County Zoo’s 2012 Adult Volunteer of the Year, has given over 500 hours of service. He has volunteered for both Australia/South America Mammals and at a multitude of special events. David has made significant contributions to the Zoo with his consistently positive attitude and ingenuity for any special projects he is asked to help with. He goes out of his way to provide ideas, materials and profound knowledge to help better the lives of collection animals. This past year alone, he was key to the construction of bed structures for the anteaters, installation of new exhibit propping for several types of small primates and even built a “condo” for the meerkats’ bedroom area. He also brings great creativity to providing daily items to enrich the lives of the animals he helps take care of. David’s efforts are greatly appreciated by all who know him. Willing to help the Zoo out without question, he also volunteers to stay for late night events. The excellence and dedication David has shown make him truly deserving of this award.

Andrea and Crissa Fortner, have been selected as the 2012 Teen Volunteers of the Year. For the first time, we are honoring a set of twins for the exceptional job they have done. Starting their volunteer work by joining teen summer programs in 2009, they have consistently excelled each summer until becoming regular volunteers at the Children’s Farms in 2011. The young women produce quality work in a timely manner and can always be relied upon by keepers. They work well as a team or apart and even color coordinate their jackets to aid in telling them apart! Together they have donated over 1,600 hours and have been instrumental in helping with everything from daily routine to help with extra chores and special projects. During the week they are full time students and still make time to come to the Zoo every Sunday. Each girl is incredibly deserving of this recognition on her own, but together they make up our volunteer duo of the year!

Connecting People with Animals Mel Hambelton Ford Education Transit Every year, 175 million people visit AZA-accredited zoos & aquariums. Approximately 500,000 people visit Sedgwick County Zoo each year. Of those that visit, over 60,000 children and adults participate in our programs, including learning adventures and summer programs. Sedgwick County Zoo is visited annually by nearly 30,000 students on school field trips. And, when groups, young or old, can’t come to the Zoo we take the Zoo to them! Sedgwick County Zoo believes the outreach programs we provide to the schools and senior centers of Sedgwick County are among the most important programs we provide because it is our responsibility to connect people with animals. We visit schools and senior centers through our educational outreach programs. It requires transportation that inspires discovery, appreciation, and respect for animals and nature. Good, reliable transportation. Thanks to a generous gift from Mel Hambelton Ford we now have the reliable transportation needed to connect people with animals anywhere!

Congratulations to the 2012 Friends University recipients of the Mark C. Reed Zoo Science Scholarship. Each year students are selected for this scholarship based on their career goals, college activities and grade point average. The Mark C. Reed Endowed Scholarship was the first major scholarship given to the Friends University Biology Department. The Zoo Science degree is a four-year bachelor’s degree program hosted by Friends University in conjunction with Sedgwick County Zoo. Students attend general biology classes at Friends University as well as classes held at Sedgwick County Zoo and taught by Zoo professionals, enabling students who plan on a zoo or aquarium career to obtain hands-on experience as well as academic experience.

Zoobilee 2012 Zoobilee: Wichita’s Wildest Fun-Raiser The Sedgwick County Zoo’s annual fundraising gala, Zoobilee, held Saturday, September 8, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight was a success! Zoobilee patrons spent the evening sampling food and drink, dancing under the stars and bidding on great silent and live auction items. A variety of area restaurants served samples of their best dishes and drinks, from old favorites to exotic new delicacies, Wichita’s eateries put on their best for Zoobilee. Following the live auction Zoobilee guests danced the night away to the sounds of Gooding. Zoobilee is the Sedgwick County Zoo’s largest fundraising effort, and is one of the most successful events of its kind. Proceeds from the event go to support daily Zoo operation and help keep Zoo daily admission prices affordable. As part of the Zoo’s commitment to conservation, a portion of this year’s funds will go to support Friends of the Zoo. Thanks to everyone for making our Zoo and this years’ Zoobilee a success. We couldn’t do it without your continued support.

In-Situ and Global Conservation Partnerships Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Project
Sedgwick County Zoo supports the Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Project in Saipan. The MAC project was initiated in cooperation with US Fish & Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, as a response to the threat of the brown tree snake in the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Specifically it was developed to identify and implement conservation actions necessary to ensure the persistence of CNMI’s avifauna. The establishment of the brown tree snake on Saipan, and the increased threat of the species’ establishment on the islands of Rota and Tinian, serves as a direct threat to the survival of many of the CNMI’s endemic and rare bird species. The MAC project is intended to provide the avifauna of the Mariana archipelago with the best possible chances for longterm survival, with the objectives of preserving, maintaining, and establishing self-sustaining populations of native, free flying birds secure from the threat of the brown tree snake. Scott Newland, Curator of Birds, has represented the Sedgwick County Zoo for several years in this important field work.
Caribbean Flamingo Wildlife Expedition—Rio Lagartos, Mexico In late summer of 2012 zookeeper Phil Horvey participated in the Caribbean flamingo Wildlife Research Expedition in Rio Lagartos, Mexico. The expedition paired zookeepers from Dallas Zoo, Tracy Aviary, Sea World San Diego, and Sedgwick County Zoo with local biologists in order to gather basic biological information on Caribbean flamingos. The area of Rio Lagartos creates the perfect environment for a large colony of nesting flamingos because it holds a large

population of their main food source, brine shrimp. The area contains approximately 5,000 birds. The expedition relies on the help of professional zookeepers and trained volunteers to help the local veterinary staff with extractions of blood samples, weighing and banding the birds. During the expedition they banded a total of 494 Caribbean flamingo chicks and the information gathered from these chicks allows researchers to analyze migration patterns of the birds, determine gender of the birds, and assess the general health of the flamingo population.
Pingßino De Humboldt in Punta San Juan, Peru The Sedgwick County Zoo has long supported the conservation of the Punta San Juan reserve in southern Peru. For the first time Sedgwick County Zoo was able to send two zookeepers, Megan Sweetwood and Steve Larson, to Peru to be involved in an observational study of Humboldt penguins and other coastal marine wildlife in the reserve. Every five years Punta San Juan is the site of Peru’s Department of Agriculture guano harvest. Guano (poop) is a vital component to the fertilizer used in the farming community of Peru. For the first time they are harvesting through the months September to October because it falls in between the two breeding seasons of the Humboldt penguin (in previous years the harvest has disrupted penguin and other guano producing birds breeding seasons). Megan and Steve’s job was to assist the head researchers in observing the penguin colonies and other coastal marine wildlife during the guano harvest; looking for disturbances to the wildlife caused by the harvest since the penguin colonies are found nearest to the site of the harvest.

Over $159,000 goes to support worldwide conservation programs Visiting Sedgwick County Zoo gives guests an opportunity to see wild animals up close and thus gain understanding, appreciation, and respect for some magnificent creatures that many people may never get to see in the wild. But another way we strive to help animals is by donating to conservation programs, which allows us to play a part in safeguarding the world’s wildlife. Conservation initiatives such as those listed protect wild animals both in captivity and in their natural habitats. Sedgwick County Zoo has been recognized with national and international awards for its support of field conservation programs and successful breeding of rare and endangered species.

In 2012, Sedgwick County Zoo was able to designate $85,306 for various conservation programs through the Quarters for Conservation. The Q4C program gives .25¢ of every gate admission to support Sedgwick County Zoo conservation efforts in the wild. Another $23,789 was collected from the new public donation boxes in the Zoo and through our Gift Shop program that allows guests to round up purchases to help fund conservation programs. Just by coming to the Zoo, our guests help support our contributions to worldwide animal conservation.
