DEAR FRIENDS: I always knew Wichita was a city filled with dedicated people who voice their fondness for their institutions. For us at Sedgwick County Zoo, this dedication is propelling us into the future once again and ensuring this community enjoys this landmark institution for generations to come. Your support over the past years overwhelmed me with how passionate you are about our Zoo and how important you view its mission and role in not only Sedgwick County but around the world. I find that nothing gets me more motivated than walking around the Zoo. Watching a family experiencing their first memorable Zoo visit; or watching guests see an animal they never knew existed and to also learn how endangered they are and what they can do to help. This is what it’s all about. It’s during these times that I am quickly reminded that our future will be just as exciting and adventurous as our present. We are inspiring our guests to care about animal and the environment. It is our sincerest hope that this in turn will lead to positive action on behalf of all animals and their wild homes. And finally, I stop to appreciate our successes due much in part to the vision and leadership of the employees, volunteers, county commissioners and the Zoological Board of Trustees. In addition, the overwhelming financial support and loyalty of our financial partners continues to amaze me. Through passion, dedication, and understanding, we can accomplish almost anything. AZA GRANTS ACCREDITATION TO SEDGWICK COUNTY ZOO The Association of Zoos & Aquariums (AZA) announced that the Sedgwick County Zoo was granted accreditation by AZA’s independent Accreditation Commission in September. To be accredited, the Sedgwick County Zoo underwent a thorough investigation to insure it has and will continue to meet ever-rising standards, which include animal care, veterinary programs, conservation, education, and safety. AZA requires zoos and aquariums to successfully complete this rigorous accreditation process in order to be members of the Association, and are required to resubmit to this process every five years. The accreditation process includes a detailed application and a meticulous on-site inspection by a team of trained zoo and aquarium professionals. The inspecting team observes all aspects of the institution’s operation in areas such as animal care; keeper training; safety for visitors, staff, and animals; educational programs; conservation efforts; veterinary programs; financial stability; risk management; visitor services; and other areas. The inspection team prepares an extensive written report for the Accreditation Commission. Finally, top officials are interviewed at a formal Commission hearing, after which accreditation is granted, tabled, or denied. Any institution that is denied may reapply one year after the Commission’s decision is made. 6

ELEPHANT CAMPAIGN
A DREAM 16 YEARS IN THE MAKING! The excitement is building as the Sedgwick County Zoological Board of Trustees kicked-off the largest fundraising project in our 43-year history—the Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley. The 10.6 million campaign will provide the funding necessary to provide a new home for our elephants. And what a home! The exhibit will encompass a sprawling 5 acres of outdoor space, plus an 18,000 square foot indoor facility. Highlights include a gathering island to see elephants from all angles; an enrichment cove for special presentations and keeper chats; and a watering hole and boat dock for further enrichment by both man and beast. We’ve been talking about a new elephant habitat for years and it’s growing ever more close to reality! Thanks to the leadership of the board, the staff, volunteers and donors for this campaign! The Elephants of the Zambezi River Valley is planned to open on Memorial Day weekend of 2016.

VOLUNTEERS
In 2014 Sedgwick County Zoo had the privilege of working with a total of 805 volunteers who donated over 34,300 hours. Volunteers help the Zoo by giving their time which in turn saves the Zoo money. The cumulative hours donated by the Sedgwick County Zoo volunteers in 2014 were equal to 17 fulltime employees. Thanks to all of you for what you do to help make the Zoo the No. 1 outdoor family tourist attraction in Kansas.
Sedgwick County Zoo Recognizes Volunteers for Service Sedgwick County Zoo would like to recognize Margaret Nichols with the 2014 Volunteer of the Year award. For many years, Mrs. Nichols has volunteered as a docent and also in the Education Department. Margaret has a strong passion for teaching, very knowledgeable about the animals, and cares deeply about the Zoo and its mission. She also enjoys working special event days like Endangered Species day and World Penguin day. In 2014, Margaret volunteered 225 hours and has well over 4000 hours in her time here at the Zoo. “Many of the volunteers who work in the education department have told me that they began volunteering because Margaret was so enthusiastic in recommending the Zoo as a place to volunteer,” said Peninnah Ziegler, Education office assistant. Margaret is a fixture in the education department and called on frequently when help is in need. “I know I can count on her to not only be here but be one of the volunteers I can send out on an assignment and she will get the job done,” said Kara King, Education specialist. Viewed by some participants in classes as “another grandma,” Margaret is always eager to help when called upon. Margaret is a team leader in training and helping other docents find their roles. She is also a talented seamstress and has helped in special projects like making costumes, table covers, and even tote bags. “We so appreciate Margaret and all she does for so many programs here at the Zoo,” said Chaille Blount, Education specialist. “I know the Education department wouldn’t be the same without her.”

Mark C. Reed Scholarship Fund Congratulations to the 2014 Friends University recipients of the Mark C. Reed Zoo Science Scholarship. Each year students are selected for this scholarship based on their career goals, college activities and grade point average. The Mark C. Reed Endowed Scholarship was the first major scholarship given to the Friends University Biology Department. The Zoo Science degree is a four-year bachelor’s degree program hosted by Friends University in conjunction with Sedgwick County Zoo. ZOOBILEE
ZOOBILEE: WICHITA’S WILDEST FUN-RAISER The Sedgwick County Zoo’s annual fundraising gala, Zoobilee, held Saturday, September 6, 2014 from 6:00 p.m. to midnight was a success! Zoobilee patrons spent the evening sampling food and drink, dancing under the stars and bidding on great silent and live auction items. A variety of area restaurants served samples of their best dishes and drinks, from old favorites to exotic new delicacies, Wichita’s eateries put on their best for Zoobilee. Following the live auction Zoobilee guests danced the night away to the sounds of The Mudbugs Cajun & Zydeo Band. Zoobilee is the Sedgwick County Zoo’s largest fundraising effort, and is one of the most successful events of its kind. Proceeds from the event go to support daily Zoo operation and help keep Zoo daily admission prices affordable. As part of the Zoo’s commitment to conservation, a portion of this year’s funds will go to support Friends of the Zoo. Thanks to everyone for making our Zoo and this years’ Zoobilee a success. 2014 CONSERVATION PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS
Partnering to Conserve a Species at the Zoo The Sedgwick County Zoo was pleased to introduce a new female bison in 2014—bringing our herd to three, one male and two females. We were excited to partner with The Nature Conservancy to bring this bison to the Zoo. The 1 ½ year-old bison was born on Kansas’ Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve and donated to the Zoo by The Nature Conservancy in Kansas. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve’s bison herd is managed cooperatively by the National Park Service and The Nature Conservancy. The herd started in 2009 with the introduction of 13 animals from Wind Cave National Park. The Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve herd now numbers 22 animals and serves as a satellite population for Wind Cave National Park. The Wind Cave herd is one of only two known public herds with no documented historic cattle interbreeding. Most bison herds have some evidence of the crossbreeding attempts with domestic cattle during the early 1900s in efforts to prevent the species from going extinct. Visitors to the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve near Strong City can hike within the bison pasture, but are strongly advised to keep a sizable distance from the herd as bison are fast and agile—and potentially very dangerous. If hikers don’t wish to hike within the bison pasture, there are other trails available that still offer views of the bison.
Partnering to Conserve Species in the Field Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Project Sedgwick County Zoo supports the Mariana Avifauna Conservation (MAC) Project in Saipan. The MAC 16
Caribbean Flamingo Wildlife Expedition—Rio Lagartos, Mexico
project was initiated in cooperation with US Fish & Wildlife Service and the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, as a response to the threat of the brown tree snake in the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI). Specifically it was developed to identify and implement conservation actions necessary to ensure the persistence of CNMI’s avifauna. The establishment of the brown tree snake on Saipan, and the increased threat of the species’ establishment on the islands of Rota and Tinian, serves as a direct threat to the survival of many of the CNMI’s endemic and rare bird species. The MAC project is intended to provide the avifauna of the Mariana archipelago with the best possible chances for longterm survival, with the objectives of preserving, maintaining, and establishing self sustaining populations of native, free flying birds secure from the threat of the brown tree snake.
In late summer 2014 Senior Zookeeper Anne Nystrom participated in the Caribbean flamingo Wildlife Research Expedition in Rio Lagartos, Mexico. The expedition paired zookeepers from a number of Association of Zoos and Aquariums organizations with local biologists in order to gather basic biological information on Caribbean flamingos. The area of Rio Lagartos creates the perfect environment for a large colony of nesting flamingos because it holds a large population of their main food source, brine shrimp. The area contains approximately 5,000 birds. The expedition relies on the help of professional zookeepers and trained volunteers to help the local veterinary staff with extractions of blood samples, weighing and banding the birds. During the expedition they banded Caribbean flamingo chicks and the information gathered from these chicks allows researchers to analyze migration patterns of the birds, determine gender of the birds, and assess the general health of the flamingo population.
In 2014, Scott Newland, Curator of Birds, and Dr. Sandy Wilson, Veterinarian represented the Sedgwick County Zoo in this important field work. The 2014 goal was to translocate 48 Rufous fantails to the uninhabited and snake-free island of Sarigan. The team exceeded this goal and translocated a total of 51 fantails!

OVER $108,215 GOES TO SUPPORT WORLDWIDE CONSERVATION PROGRAMS Visiting Sedgwick County Zoo gives guests an opportunity to see wild animals up close and thus gain understanding, appreciation, and respect for some magnificent creatures that many people may never get to see in the wild. But another way we strive to help animals is by donating to conservation programs, which allows us to play a part in safeguarding the world’s wildlife. Conservation initiatives such as those listed protect wild animals both in captivity and in their natural habitats. Sedgwick County Zoo has been recognized with national and international awards for its support of field conservation programs and successful breeding of rare and endangered species.

In 2014, Sedgwick County Zoo was able to designate $108,215 for various conservation programs through the Quarters for Conservation. The Q4C program gives .25¢ of every gate admission to support Sedgwick County Zoo conservation efforts in the wild.
