8

THE AREA Situated in the southwest of London, Streatham is considered one of the London’s most culturally diverse, bustling and vibrant area. The name Streatham means “the hamlet on the street”, clearly reflecting its history and its location on the Roman road to Brighton. The South London district was originally a rural village

predominantly in agriculture, however in the early 20th century Streatham started to face a period of developments, investments and gentrification, giving Streatham a bit of a reputation as a place to party, and becoming known as ‘the West End of the south’.

9

Spread over a large part of the borough of Lambeth from Brixton to Norbury, Streatham is renowned for being a vibrant and exiting London hub that offers numerous recreational amenities. With large green spaces, three

railway stations offering quick and easy access to central London, and plenty of leisure opportunities, Streatham attracts young families looking for more space as well as City professionals.

10

Streatham is reputed to have the longest shopping street in Europe, with Streatham High Road stretching for over two miles. The high street features a fantastic array of supermarkets, designer shops, boutiques, trendy bars, jazz and comedy clubs and an extensive choice of restaurants. Relax on a comedy night at the Waterfront bar or enjoy the classy atmosphere of the Hideway Jazz, a jazz lovers’ paradise with music every weekend and jam sessions and workshops during the week. Experience the diverse selection of cuisines readily available in the restaurants of the area, such as Caribbean, African, Thai, Japanese and Chinese. Streatham is also home to an annual Food Festival that attracts over 3,000 people throughout its two-weeks run, and includes events such as food tour of the world with taster plates, cookery classes and local produce markets. Moreover, Streatham is known for further festivals and events, including

Streatham Festival, an acclaimed arts festival with events including comedy, film, art, photography, food, music and dance, and Streatham Common Kite Day, with stunt flying displays, stalls and entertainment. What makes the suburb of Streatham particularly appealing is the wide choice of leisure time facilities that engage the whole family. There are tennis, football and rugby clubs all nearby, and Tooting Bec Athletics Track is just a short bus ride away. There is also an outdoor swimming pool at the Tooting Bec Lido, which is consistently popular in the summer months. The neighbouring Streatham Leisure Centre offers a variety of exciting activities, from the famous Olympic-sized ice rink and Go Karting track to the highly equipped gym, swimming pool and sports hall.

11

Streatham is equally rich in culture and architecture. Its historic roots could be seen in the building style of The Tate Library, The White Horse Pub and St Leonard’s Parish. The Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, just 30 minutes away, features an aquarium, music gallery, natural history gallery and frequently changing exhibitions, while the Crystal Palace Museum, detailing the history of the famous palace, is also nearby. Streatham boasts a number of popular and prestigious schools within the town and close by, with a variety of single-sex, mixed, public and state schools. Primary schools to achieve highly in recent Ofsted inspections include St Andrew’s Catholic Primary School, Julian’s

School, Streatham Wells Primary School and Kingswood Primary School (according to the Ofsted website). The area also benefits from a number of successful secondary schools, including Dunraven Secondary School, Chesnut Grove Academy and Streatham & Clapham High School, all of which achieved good or outstanding in recent inspections. Moreover, the Print House is conveniently located within 50 minutes to the London’s top universities, including Imperial College, UCL and King’s College, making the development an ideal accommodation for both present and future students.

12

LONDON The capital is home to a phenomenal array of things to see and do. From West End productions to some of the finest museum and art galleries in the world, London presents a million and one thing to experience no matter what you are into. Spend an afternoon exploring the prestigious shopping opportunities of Bond Street, or

stroll under the trees in one of the city’s many beautiful royal parks. Dine at a Michelin-starred restaurant or head to your favourite pub to watch the football or enjoy a leisurely Sunday roast. However you like to spend your well-deserved down time moments, London offers myriad choices to do just as you please.

“When a man is tired of london, he is tired of life; for there is in london all that life can af ford.” Samuel Johnson, Writer
