The Swiss Energy and Climate Summit is the leading conference on energy and climate issues in Switzerland. 2

SWISS ENERGY AND CLIMATE SUMMIT 2016

EXPERIENCE IS THE FUTURE Dear attendees, As it celebrates its 10th instalment, the Swiss Energy and Climate Summit can look back on a successful track record. The SwissECS was founded as the National Climate Forum to mark the 200th anniversary of Building Insurance Bern (Gebäudeversicherung Bern, GVB). Generating a great deal of interest, it succeeded in acquiring new partners and, under the name SwissECS, evolved to become the most important national platform for knowledge exchange and networking in the climate and energy sector. Each year, visitors can look forward to special highlights, such as Tesla’s Swiss launch in 2007 or last year’s keynote speech by Tony Blair. Let us use the experiences we have gathered to cast our gaze to the future. Only though innovation, investment and entrepreneurial spirit can we build a sustainable future for generations to come. The purpose of the 10th instalment of SwissECS is to deliver concrete answers to the climate and energy questions of tomorrow. Because the future begins today: with Building Tomorrow.

UELI WINZENRIED President of SwissECS

BUILDING TOMORROW The 10th instalment of the Swiss Energy and Climate Summit will cast its eyes to the future and deliver concrete answers. The theme of this year’s event is Building Tomorrow. Top speakers will deliver talks on the following key topics covering every aspect of climate and energy:

Technology and entrepreneurial spirit Those who skilfully combine technologies with business models will achieve success and contribute to shaping a positive world for the future. Which innovations from the cleantech sector will make the breakthrough? Investment and the carbon bubble A growing number of investors are washing their hands of carbon-intensive capital investments. Is a global carbon bubble now looming? What is the impact of “stranded assets” on Swiss pension funds and investors? Research and science The melting of the Greenland ice sheet has far-reaching consequences for sea levels and global climate. What answers can research offer with regard to the complex mechanisms of action? Energy and climate policy The Paris Agreement, promotion of renewable energy, low oil prices – what is the current state of national and international energy and climate policy? What does this mean for the future? The sustainable city Over half of the world’s population lives in cities – and this figure is rising. How can infrastructure systems be interlinked intelligently to pave the way for savings in the energy sector? Country in focus: India In India, the amount of electricity from renewable sources is to be increased fivefold by 2022. Meanwhile, there are also plans to expand coal-fired power capacity. What effect will these conflicting developments have on the country? 4

SHOW CASES INNOVATIONS AND NEW TECHNOLOGIES WITH A VISION E-ISLAND

Pumped storage is currently the only possibility for storing large quantities of energy both safely and reliably. The challenges facing this technology include the lack of suitable sites and the growing scarcity of water. Frank Verschraegen, project manager at the DEME Group, presents the innovative E-Island pumped storage project, which is constructed in the sea and operates using seawater.

COPENHAGEN WHEEL – THE BICYCLE REVOLUTION

Entrepreneur and innovator Assaf Biderman founded the tech company Superpedestrian in 2012. In collaboration with robotics specialists, he developed the Copenhagen Wheel, a device that makes it possible to quickly convert normal bicycles into e-bikes. The smart-wheel innovation was named one of the 25 Best Inventions by Time Magazine in 2014.

FROM POWER TO LIQUIDS

Industrial engineer Christian von Olshausen is co-founder of sunfire GmbH and has been responsible for its technical management since 2010. The year 2015 saw the researchers develop “Blue Crude” – thereby achieving their goal of producing artificial diesel fuel from water, CO2 and green electricity.

CARBON BUBBLE A RISK FOR FINANCIAL MARKETS OR A FALSE ALARM?

URS MEISTER Head of Strategic Regulatory Management at BKW

ANTOINETTE HUNZIKER-EBNETER CEO and founding partner of Forma Futura Invest AG

A growing number of investors are seeking investment opportunities in low-carbon sectors. For example, the Rockefeller Brother Fund completely withdrew its money from all oil and coal companies in 2014. In addition, the Paris Agreement of December 2015 clearly signalled a move towards a low-carbon economy. If a carbon tax were to be introduced, any investments in carbon-hungry companies would carry considerable risk for investors, for financial centres and for people insured by pension funds. • What does the term carbon bubble mean and what are the risks associated with it? • What are the consequences of “stranded assets” for institutional investors and for Switzerland as a financial centre? • What strategies are companies, the financial sector and investors adopting in order to prevent potential losses in value? The experts will discuss these and other issues as part of a panel led by Urs Gredig.

«TOMORROW’S BUILDING» – INTEGRATION OR SELF-SUFFICIENCY Buildings act as power stations and are becoming part of the energy supply – and their smart integration into the grid is essential. Moreover, we are seeing a strong trend towards private consumption: an increasing number of people want to produce their own electricity and to use it or store it themselves. The smart use of self-produced energy, managed using a control and monitoring

With the associated increase in the complexity of these technologies, and given the interaction between the various systems in the building, there is an ever-greater need for coordination between specialists in different sectors as well as for constantly growing technical expertise.

THE SWISS ECONOMY UNDER CLIMATE CHANGE: EFFECTS AND ADAPTATION STRATEGIES Switzerland is disproportionately affected by climate change. Analyses show that the freezing level in winter has risen by approx. 300 metres since the 1960s. In future, the country can expect increasingly frequent periods of warm weather and heatwaves, which has implications for the environment and for society. The economy, too, will be affected – to varying degrees depending

on sector. Taking the example of the tourism and transport sector, the experts will discuss the effects of climate change and adaptation strategies.

EXPERT DISCUSSION REGARDING INDIA’S ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND ENERGY POLICY OF TOMORROW

ROBERT STONER

JAIRAM RAMESH

Deputy Director for Science and Technology at the MIT Energy Initiative

Politician and Indian Minister of Environment, 2009 – 2011

India’s energy sector has undergone enormous expansion over recent decades in order to supply electricity to the rapidly growing economy and to hundreds of millions of people for the first time. The government in power has declared universal access to electricity as one of its key concerns. By 2022, the amount of energy generated from renewable energies is to be increased fivefold to 175 gigawatts. India is also planning to expand its coal-fired power capacity at the same time. This fossil fuel will therefore continue to play a major role in future. Faced with these conflicting objectives, the former Indian Minister of the Environment Jairam Ramesh and the entrepreneur Harish Hande will hold a discussion, led by Robert Stoner, on India’s energy and environmental policy, on the important role of innovative entrepreneurship in future development, and on how the reciprocal transfer of expertise can be promoted across national and cultural boundaries.

Building Insurance Bern (GVB) From hurricanes and severe thunderstorms to record high tides – weather phenomena are becoming increasingly extreme all over the world. And as the intensity of such phenomena increases, so do the damage figures in Switzerland. Building Insurance Bern (GVB) provides mandatory unlimited insurance cover against fire and weather-related damage for all buildings in the Canton of Bern. Maintaining this cover in the face of climate change requires new ways of thinking. GVB is addressing this challenge by shoring up the risks on a broader base through additional insurance and consulting services in its subsidiaries. It

also campaigns heavily for prevention measures to minimise damages and is involved in climate policy at various levels. With this in mind, GVB is proud to be the initiator and sponsor of SwissECS and to help shape the dialogue about our climate and energy future. www.gvb.ch/klima
