Contents

At Sefton Council we consider training to be a crucial part of the support we offer you as foster carers, adopters and adults acting as Special Guardians. It is recognised that you are caring for children who have additional needs. The courses keep you up to date with practice developments and are designed to support you in your rewarding and challenging role.

Welcome

3

Close family and friends often play a crucial part in caring for the children placed by Children’s Services. Every effort is made to include members of your support network in training events. If you believe it will benefit them, just ask!

Extended Family

We have sections for mainstream fostering, and kinship fostering and adoption. If you are a Special Guardian you are entitled to attend courses you think would support you in the care of your child. More information about the courses is available on request to help you select courses that will fit your family’s needs.

Finding the Right Courses for You

0151 934 4419

trainingfa@sefton.gov.uk

Please see back cover for the list of venues. Maps can be sent to you on request.

Finding our Venues

We hear of other training opportunities at times with short notice. Providing us with a current email address means we can circulate details of extra courses as they come up. Please contact us if there are specific courses you would like to access but can’t see our plan. We would love to hear from you.

Keeping in Touch

We are aware that most carers who wish to attend training are currently caring for a child. We would ask that you use your support network to enable you to attend training. Wherever this is not possible, we ask that you contact your social worker to let them know the specific needs of your child and what support is required. We may be able to provide some support from one of our placement support workers.

Foster Carers Skills Scheme Thu 21 Jan

The workshops also support foster carers completing the level two workbook to take time to explain in detail how they carry out the fostering task.

All mainstream foster carers are expected to complete:

These sessions are to offer support for foster carers undertaking the induction workbook required in the Fostering National Minimum Standards to be completed within one year (Kinship carers have 18 months to complete).

Fostering Service Workbook Workshops 2016

It has been agreed that all mainstream fostering households should complete at least 12 hours of Continual Professional Development (CPD) each year. This is usually three of our courses. However, this can be met through relevant training at work, specialist training, external courses or independent study if evidence is provided.

Foster carers need to attend training as part of the requirements of their registration.

We have reduced the expectation placed on kinship carers as 3 hours continual professional development each year. You are welcome, indeed encouraged, to take part in other fostering courses.

Ongoing Training

Course content: • How can you help keep children in your care safe?

Kinship Plus

There are 8 priority courses for foster carers. First Aid remains to be a requirement. We have developed a 2 day course Kinship Plus, which brings together the key messages from the priority courses after you have become an approved foster carer.

Priority Courses

You asked us for some sessions that bring together kinship carers / connected persons to share experiences and reflect on positive ways of caring for our children. We realise that for some kinship carers, you have become foster carers because of life events within your family; keeping up with the training requirements can feel like an extra burden.
