GROUP BOOKING DISCOUNT

ACCESS

Sefton Council is striving to improve disabled access to all of its facilities. Limited wheelchair spaces are available, advanced booking is strongly advised. Please inform Box Office of your requirements when booking. The Fire Authority recommends that wheelchair patrons should remain in their wheelchairs throughout the performance, transfer to ordinary seating is not recommended. Each wheelchair patron should be accompanied by an able-bodied person, who will be expected to assist should an evacuation become necessary.

Botanic Gardens Museum The Oddfellows Society 200th Anniversary Exhibition Saturday 17 April until Sunday 23 May 2010

The Oddfellows Society is a not for profit membership organisation that provides social activities, care and support for members. The Oddfellows is one of the largest and oldest friendly societies currently operating in the UK. 2010 is a special year for The Oddfellows as the society is celebrating it’s Bicentenary. To mark this special occasion, there will be an exhibition of historical photographs and memorabilia from The Oddfellows Society. The exhibition offers something for everyone with free drop-in children’s activities, no booking required.

Permanent Collections The Botanic Gardens Museum houses a number of fascinating objects within their permanent collections such as: Photographs and paintings that tell the story of 19th century Southport. 6th Century dug-out canoe which was found near Martin Mere. The canoe was probably used for fishing and was one of eleven found in the area. It was radio carbon dated to 535 A.D. by experts from John Moores University. A Victorian parlour showing how a middle class Victorian family would have lived. Another interesting element of the exhibition is a display of Victorian toys. It includes dolls houses, dolls, teddy bears, board games and many other much loved toys and games.

A Natural History room featuring an extensive collection of birds and animals. In addition, the collection also comprises many interesting fossils that highlight the changes in climate and landscape that have taken place over millions of years. Dan Dare / Eagle Comic was founded in Southport in the 1950’s and was Britain’s answer to imported American publications featuring the likes of Superman and Spiderman. To mark the connection between the comic and the town, the museum has a display of fascinating artefacts and Dan Dare memorabilia.

The exhibition offers visitors an exciting opportunity to view amazing artwork by well-known artists such as Henri Matisse and Paula Rego. The exhibition promises to be one not to be missed!

Creative Alternatives is a three-year programme offering free arts activities as an alternative to medication for those experiencing mild to moderate stress, anxiety or depression. Ongoing multi art-form workshops operate from Netherton Arts Centre, The Eco Centre Southport, and Formby Methodist Church running alongside a full programme of specialist art projects and social cultural trips. Come along and get involved in the workshops, and join in with a thriving group of young people aged 5-17 years, who meet to enjoy a range of drama based activities.

Classes are based around a variety of drama techniques, including improvisation, role play, storytelling, script reading and writing. Led by Steve Fairclough. This pottery course will be repeated at regular intervals throughout the year and is suitable for complete beginners to those with more advanced skills and will include ‘throwing’ pots, glazing and firing. From the Albert Dock in Liverpool, take the A5036 north from Wapping, along Waterloo Road and the length of Regent Road past the docks on the left. Turn left onto the A565 (Crosby Road South) then right at Princess Way, rejoining the A5036, and continue along Dunningsbridge Road until the junction of Park Lane at the Park Hotel on the left. Turn left onto Park Lane until the roundabout and turn left onto Glovers Lane. Pass the Marian Square shops on the left and Netherton Arts Centre is within the Netherton Activity Centre/ Library building complex on the right and adjacent to the Eden Vale Pub.

Access by car from Southport:

A565 (Formby Bypass) to Liverpool, continue until traffic signals that signpost M57, M58 & Aintree. Turn left at these, continue until T.Junction and turn right on Chapel Lane and then left at the Cabbage pub onto Copy Lane. Continue until Netherton Library and turn left and then first right.
