seaton hall redesign
manhattan • kansas fall 2010
The Seaton Hall Renovation Project was a part of an experimental vertical studio sponsored by Kansas State University. Our design extended the west wing of Seaton Hall. It created a plaza and two new main entrances that were located on axis to Mid Campus Drive and the main pedestrian pathway that extends past the west wing of Seaton. A new gallery, auditorium, coffee shop,
library, and work shop were included in the design. The design is both simple and effective in utilizing available space to create a modern educational facility for students and faculty. This project was a cooperative effort between third and fifth year students that emphasized the value of teamwork and collaboration.

Sustainability was an essential part of the design. A green roof that acts as a water collection system was placed over the current lecture hall. Both local and recycled materials would be used for the renovation and “twin face” façades that take in air and control day lighting would be utilized in the new entrances.
A double skin facade with colored glass panels establishes a sense of hierarchy and also circulates air through the two skins, helping to cool the building in the summer and heat it in the winter.

The TWA hotel resembles the former Trans World Airlines Corporate Headquarters that is located in Kansas City, Missouri. It features a distinctive red trim that resembles a large ribbon circumventing the entire building. This ribbon not only mimics the original TWA building but gives the hotel a distinctive look that sets it apart from other hotels. Some of the rooms are two stories which accommodates guests who desire a separate living space away from the bedroom. The hotel has views of the beautiful Kansas City skyline and provides a unique design for both its interior and exterior spaces.

The Downtown Economic Assistance Center is designed as a center for professional services, job counseling, and education. Located in San Francisco, California, it is constructed as a combination of two rectangular units, the larger cantilevering over the smaller. As a unifying feature, a second skin is wrapped around the top two levels, punctuated by circular cutouts and louvers to control day lighting. For the convenience of the patrons, the first
floor features a consignment shop and cafÊ. To compensate for the area’s propensity for earthquakes, the building is laterally braced with diagonal columns that line the perimeter of the building. A rather stunning visual, as well as structural feature, extends these columns in an upward, diagonal direction where they provide framework for the upper two floors. Their prominent green color provides visual effect and emphasizes their importance in the structure.

italia sketches Italy is a vast treasure for the student of architecture. Its ancient and varied structures provide a nearly unlimited source of study material. This project presents a number of drawings, sketches, and watercolors inspired by my semester of study in Italy. More personal and warm than photographs, they represent not only the objects themselves but the feeling and texture of the land and history surrounding them. My special focus was on Italian doors. Understanding how their patterns and symbolism represent the difference between secular and sacred space was especially meaningful to me. Even in ancient times, the concept of space and how to use it was important to designers.

The Power & Light Brewery is located in downtown Kansas City, Missouri in the Power and Light District. The brewhouse, a simple structure of red brick, is a large, rectangular space with ample room for large brewing vats and supply rooms for the various grains and additives. A high point for visitors is the wrap-around hospitality space where they can both sample the brewery’s wares in air-cooled comfort and watch the brewing process in the main structure. Environmentalists will appreciate the green roof and water collection system while more artistic types might admire the large red columns and glass walls cladded with stainless steel mesh. The design takes the brewery business out of the normal drab environment of the past and gives it a lighter, brighter presence for both employees and visitors.

The Spiritual Retreat in the Castle District in Budapest is a thesis project for the Masters of Architecture Program at Kansas State University. The project is located in the capital of Hungary, a country located in central Europe. The retreat is a place of transformation for the body, mind, and soul. The architecture and simplicity of form which unfolds as it moves along the site creates moments of private seclusion and group interaction. The rich history of the site is evident in the preservation of the existing Ministry of Defense Building and the ruins of an ancient church. The relationship between the new and the old, and the natural and the built environment, support the retreat as a place of spiritual transformation.
Transformation can be stimulated through the use of light, symbolism, connections, and transitions. Some components of the design can be moved to create changing environments. They can be transformed from small and intimate to large and inviting spaces that form a connection with nature. This relationship with nature is created through large doors that open to the exterior allowing natural light to enter the space and guest interaction with the outdoor environment. Movable elements of different scales - window coverings that glide along a track, sliding doors, and a large mobile elementsupport the concept of transformation throughout the design. The mobile element acts as both a connection and separation between the Chapel and the rest of the design. It symbolizes importance and creates changing environments. When utilized it creates smaller, private spaces of seclusion.
The retreat is a place for guests to come and be transformed spiritually to better understand themselves and their faith. The design is simplistic so the visitors will not be distracted from their spiritual experience. This allows them to focus on meditation, prayer, and contemplation as they are transformed mentally, physically, and spiritually.
