Seguin welcomes Saver the Squirrel

(Seguin) -- Don’t forget to give Saver the Squirrel a big wave the next time you travel along State Highway 123 Bypass. Saver is the second handcrafted squirrel to find its home as part of the Seguin Commission on the Arts Squirrel Trail Program. The larger-than-life squirrel sits outside front Schertz Bank & Trust.

Bank Vice President Lee Prince says the local bank is excited to be a part of the squirrel trail program which outfits the city with creatively painted squirrels around town.

“It looks great. I think it turned out very nice. The colors were done well. That’s our bank colors. Of course, squirrels aren’t blue and white but the bank’s colors are blue and white and the artist that painted it was trying to blend our logo is the eagle -- so, she was trying to blend elements or kind of the look of the eagle in with the squirrel. The squirrel, obviously, dominated but if you look close, you see the eyes are a little more not squirrel like and stuff like that. So, it’s just little touches that she did on that,” said Prince.

Prince says the bank took a quick interest in purchasing one of the first squirrels for the program. He says the benefits are limitless.

“The initial thought was that it would be a good involvement with the community -- to have a squirrel trial. I don’t know who came up with the idea but I thought it was a real neat idea and the other thing that came to mind was it would be great for when children see it. They are going to love it and it’s going to leave an impression on them. They’ll travel around. The parents will take them around town to see all the squirrels and I’m thinking that when they see ours, maybe they’ll equate that positively with the bank as well. So, Saver the Squirrel is the name and hopefully, they’ll start saving money sooner in life than later,” said Prince.

Although Saver has been on the bank lawn for only a few short days, Prince says the response has already been a good one.

Lions to unleash the fun during annual fun run/walk

(Seguin) -- You’re invited to take a walk or a run on the wild side with a few fellow Lions this weekend.

The Seguin Sunrise Lions Club is inviting all residents to its 4th Annual Springtime Fun Run/Walk along Walnut Springs Trail. The event is scheduled for this Saturday beginning at Walnut Springs Park and traveling to Seguin’s Park West.

Event Chair Marvel Maddox says the event is designed for either the serious runner or those looking for a calming walk through the woods over at Park West.

“You can just take your time. Every year, we usually have one or two families with strollers or you can leisurely walk to Park West and back. It’s not timed but we do give awards for the best 14th finish by any of our sponsors and we have a bunch of really good sponsors and so there are some people who get in front and take off and they are really racing for the best 14th finish. We also have an award for the top finisher overall and then we give an award for most participants. Everyone is welcome,” said Maddox.

Maddox thanks to community supporters, there is no fee to participate. Donations, however, will be accepted should participants wish to give.

“There is no participant fees. We will have a donation jar. Our sponsors have been wonderful and have covered all of our expenses. So, we are good on that end. But anybody that wants to donate (can). All the money, 100 percent will go to either scholarships or local social service agencies that we do sustaining health year after year or the Texas Lions Camp,” said Maddox.

One little girl was hugging it,” laughs Prince. “So, she liked it. And, I was like ‘awe, that’s kind of neat.’ When you get a hug, life is good. Other than ice cream, what else can be better?”

As the city looks to grow the number of squirrels around town, Prince encourages other businesses or organizations to also join in on the fun.

“You know, I’m surprised the other banks didn’t jump on it because I think it promotes a positive image for any business not just a bank but any business. And,

Adding to the fun will again be this year’s theme “I Survived the Lions Jungle Fun Run.” Maddox says a top prize will also be awarded to that person for Best Themed Costume.

“We had a lot of cute people come with their face painted with tiger ears or nose or whatever so we had a number of people that came out ready to do the Jungle Fun Run,” said Maddox.

Again, there will be awards for Top Finisher, Best 4 Team Sponsored Finish, Most Sponsored Participants, and Best Themed Costume.

Check-in is at 8 a.m. Saturday followed by the start time at 8:30 a.m. The distance is three miles to Park West and back to Walnut Springs Park in downtown Seguin.

The Seguin Squirrel Trail Program, which so far has 14 sponsored squirrels, is similar to public arts projects and programs visible in other cities. Examples include the horses in Amarillo or closer to home, the Mermaids in San Marcos.

(McQueeney) -- This past weekend, reptiles and crawly critters took over the McQueeney Lions Club as the Texas Reptile Expo came to town. Seguin Today stopped by the event where Creative Director Lizz Daniels had an experience that has now been viewed on TikTok one million times. The video features Daniels (who is arachnophobic) facing her fears by holding a tarantula the size of her palm while Rand of North Texas Tarantula Breeders educates her about the spider. His calm demeanor and spider facts mixed with Daniels’ facial expressions were a hit with viewers on the app, causing the video to pass 500k views in the first 24 hours. Navarro’s Tatum Harborth Earns Selection on TABC 4A All Region Team

(Geronimo) -- Navarro’s Tatum Harborth earned a spot on the 2022-23 Texas Association of Basketball Coaches 4A All Region Team. Harborth was named to the Region 4 team last week.

A first team All-District selection, the senior lead the Lady Panthers averaging 19.1 points and 3 steals per game. She also had 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists per contest. Harborth scored her 2000th career point on January 10th against Wimberley.

The Panthers finished third in District 27-4A behind state ranked Boerne and Fredericksburg. Navarro was 31-8 overall, and advanced three playoff rounds for the fourth straight year before falling to Fredericksburg 62-41. The Lady Panthers are lead by head coach Darrell Harborth who has been at helm at Navarro for 24 seasons.

VITAL STATISTICS

Leroy Edgar Froboese of Marion passed away on March 17, 2023. He was born on January 4, 1932, in Selma, Texas to Alma Voigt Froboese and Wilhelm August Carl Froboese.

He married his best friend and love of his life, Nelleene Evelyn Kappelmann Froboese, on September 4, 1955. Leroy and Nelleene were blessed with four sons, whom he loved and shared his affinity and knowledge of technical problem-solving with. He retired from the American Can Company after working for over 20 years as a maintenance electrician. He enjoyed the challenge of solving electrical and hydraulic problems, as well as working on AC units and cars for whoever needed the help. He loved farming and working with his hands. He would work late at night to complete a project, ensuring the equipment would work correctly the next day. He was also always available to family and friends for a friendly game of dominos or cards or to visit.

Leroy is preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, Nelleene, his son, Delroy and daughter-in-law, Deborah and his parents, siblings, Lola Priess, Eugene Froboese, Alice Froboese, and Roman Froboese.

Survivors include his sons, Nelson, Darrell and wife Renna, and Norwell and wife Jodie; daughter-in-law, Teresia; granddaughters, Kristi, Andrea, Reva, Shannon, and Cassie and their families; sisterin-law, Kathleen Pope; brother-in-law, Kervin Kappelmann and wife Marrianne; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 23, 2023, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary. Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 1 p.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Tom Jones officiating. Interment will follow in Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park.

Serving as pallbearers will be Justin Missildine, Wade Hofstetter, Keith Klabunde, Herbert Bindseil, Erik Nunez, and Melvin Priess.

Wilhelm “Bill” Schade, age 81 of Seguin, Texas passed away on March 16, 2023. Bill was born on March 24, 1941, in Germany.

Bill is preceded in death by his parents, Helene (Schade) and Herman Ratz, and his sister Inge Philbrook and his brothersin-law Jim Wacker and Billy Joe Hageman.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Constance “Connie” Korsmeyer Schade (they were married in Morton, Illinois); sons, Bob and (Wendy) Schade, Tim and (Andrea) Schade; grandchildren Courtney (Zachary) Smith, Caitlyn Schade, Caroline Schade, & Kinley Schade; sisters-in-law, Lil Wacker, Joyce (Richard) Dinel; numerous nephews, one niece, other loving family members and many friends.

Bill graduated from Lutheran West High School in Cleveland, Ohio in 1959. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University in 1964, and his Master of Education degree from Indiana University in 1969. Bill coached football in Portland, Oregon, Canton, Missouri, Alamosa, Colorado, and Fargo, North Dakota for 14 years prior to joining Connie’s parents in the grocery business in Pekin, Illinois. For the next 20 years Bill and Connie ran Mr. K’s Supermarkets. In 2002 Bill came out of retirement to coach football again at Texas Lutheran University. In retirement Bill loved woodworking and following his granddaughters in all their endeavors.

Visitation will begin on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin, Texas, followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. with the Reverend Daniel Cave officiating. Interment will follow immediately after in the Faith Lutheran Church Columbarium. A reception will follow in the Life Enrichment Center (LEC) at Faith Lutheran Church. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Mike Wacker, Steve Wacker, Tom Wacker, Eddie Dinel, Greg Borman, and Zachary Smith. .

Gerber Recalling Some Powered Formula Over Possible Bacteria Contamination (Dublin) -- A manufacturer is recalling some containers of baby formula over possible bacteria contamination. Perrigo says they’re pulling a portion of their Gerber Good Start SoothePro powdered formula products off shelves “out of an abundance of caution.” The recall applies to various sizes of containers sold across the U.S. with “Use By” dates between July 4th and 16th of next year. No confirmed cases of illness have been reported. Customers can contact the Gerber Parent Resource Center over the phone or online to get additional information or to request a refund.

Wyoming Becomes First State To Ban Abortion Pills (Cheyenne, WY) -- Wyoming is set to become the first U.S. state to ban abortion bills. The bill signed Friday by Republican Governor Mark Gordon outlaws the prescription, distribution, sale or use of “any drug for the purpose of procuring or performing an abortion on any person.” The measure, which takes effect on July 1st, makes exceptions for rape, incest, or if the mother’s life is in danger. This comes as a federal judge in Texas considers ordering a nationwide ban on an abortion pill previously approved by the FDA.

Awaiting Federal Judge’s Ruling On Abortion Pills

(Amarillo, TX) -- The wait continues for a Texas judge’s decision in a case regarding abortion pills. A U.S. District judge heard arguments last week in an anti-abortion group’s lawsuit to overturn the FDA’s approval of abortion pills. The Alliance Defending Freedom sued in November on behalf of four pro-life medical organizations and four doctors who say they treated patients with mifepristone [[ miff-uh Pris-tone ]]. The drug was approved in 2000, but the lawsuit claims the government deliberately ignored what the plaintiffs describe as harmful side effects. A senior adviser at Planned Parenthood Texas points to the Trump-appointed judge’s background as a reason pro-choice advocates “can expect the worst.”

March Madness Top Time For Vasectomies (San Antonio, TX) -- For many men watching the NC-Double-A tournament, it’s prime time for vasectomies. Urologist Alexander Rozansky with the University of Texas Health System says the end of the calendar year is the most popular time for vasectomies followed by March Madness. Dr. Rozansky says that’s because a lot of men can or do schedule time off which is recommended when you undergo that surgery. He says sitting on the couch watching college hoops is a good way to recover because it reduces the risk of bleeding and wound opening.

Adult Pickleball League

There will be an Adult Pickleball League held from 6 to 8 p.m. every Tuesday from April 11 through May 16 at the Seguin-Saegert Pickleball Complex, located at 418 W. Mountain St. in Seguin. The SEGUIN DAILY NEWS was begun as a single page flier in 1972 by the radio station and was distributed to local restaurants and coffee shops at the request of local businessmen who wanted something to read while they had their morning coffee.

It grew in size over the years, up to 4 pages, until 2002, when it was expanded to a 32 page small tabloid size news magazine.
