John Brice Dikes, age 84 of Seguin, passed away on April 1, 2023, in Seguin, Tx. He was born January 11, 1939, in San Antonio, TX to Nora Lee (Brice) and John Alexander Dikes. John was a graduate of Brackenridge High School, Class of 1957 in San Antonio. He served in the United States Army Reserves from 1957 to 1966. For 38 years he was employed with City Public Service in San Antonio. John served on the Church Council at St. John Lutheran Church in Marion for several years. He and his wife Patricia are currently members of Faith Lutheran Church in Seguin. John was proud to serve as a Gideon, assisting many to receive the word of God through the distribution of the Holy Bible.

John had many interests and hobbies including riding motorcycles in his younger years, coaching YMCA Football, deer hunting and traveling. His most treasured times were spent with family and friends, especially showing hogs with his son and watching his grandson grow up through the years.

John is preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years Patricia Ann (Causey) Dikes; son John David Dikes and wife Beth; grandson Kyle Nicholas and wife Sara-Ashley; his beloved dog “Mis Sassy”; brothersin-law, Harvey Causey, David McKinley and wife Shirley, Paul Causey, Jesse Causey and wife Pat and Larry Causey and wife Cindy; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members and friends.

Visitation will begin on Friday, April 7, 2023 at 10 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11 a.m. at Tres Hewell Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Daniel Cave officiating. Interment will follow at St. John Lutheran Church Cemetery in Marion.

Bill To Protect Those Providing, Seeking Abortions Passes House

(Denver, CO) -- A bill that would protect Colorado doctors who practice reproductive or gender-affirming health care is moving closer to the Governor’s desk. Senate Bill 188 has been approved by the House. Lawmakers have also approved two other related bills, including one that expands insurance coverage for abortions and other reproductive health care. Any amendments attached to the bills would have to be approved by the Senate before they are sent to the governor for his signature.

Study Shows Key Markers For Dementia Risk

(Chicago, IL) -- A new study shows that Alzheimer’s disease hits women harder than men for biological reasons that haven’t been understood thus far. The Alzheimer’s Association says women who went through menopause early, before age 45, or women who tried hormone replacement therapy five years after menopause have higher levels of the protein tau in their brains. High amounts of that protein are red flags for Alzheimer’s disease. The study’s lead author said this is the first study that shows that using delayed hormone replacement therapy is linked to a higher chance of Alzheimer’s.

Lithium-Contaminated Tap Water Linked To Increased Autism Diagnoses In Newborns (Los Angeles, CA) -- Drinking tap water contaminated with lithium while pregnant could be linked to an increased risk of autism in newborns. A study from UCLA studied Denmark’s civil data on pregnancy and psychiatric disorders. For the water with the top 25-percent lithium levels, risk was 46 percent higher than in comparison to the lowest quartile. Lithium has also been linked to higher risk of miscarriage, heart anomalies and other newborn defects.

Peeps Treats Linked to Cancer

(Miami, FL) -- Health warnings are being issued related to an Easter fan favorite. Certain colors of Peeps marshmallows are being linked to cancer. The artificial coloring called Red Dye No. 3 is a known carcinogen. Consumer Reports flagged nine different Peeps and other candies manufactured by Just Born Quality Confections, including pink and lavender Peeps along with Hot Tamales candy and Wildberry Marshmallow Bunnies.
