Today marks first day of school for Seguin ISD students

(Seguin) – It’s back to school today for the Seguin ISD. Students and staff will tackle day one of the 2023-2024 school year.

The anticipation and excitement for today began brewing on Friday afternoon as the school district’s 1,100 employees gathered for this year’s convocation at Seguin High School. Complete with Matador band music, confetti and spirit stick competitions, the event helped to officially welcome the start and return to the classroom for Seguin ISD employees.

Pleased with the energy that teachers, bus drivers and all other employees absorbed was Superintendent Matthew Gutierrez.

Gutierrez says being witness to those high levels of energy and

optimism makes him excited for the upcoming school year.

“I have chills right now because I feel like every year, we have the best convocation and there is so much spirit and positive energy, but this year is not like any other and if you had the opportunity to come to a convocation, I don’t think you’ve seen the amount of spirit that you saw today. Every campus just came energized, enthusiastic – they came in costumes, with themes and they are excited to see our kids,” said Gutierrez.

Included in that energy were lots of laughs and plenty of things to think about thanks to this year’s guest speaker Dr. Adolph Brown best known nationally as “Doc Brown.”

Seguin ISD families encouraged to utilize patience as students head back to school

District officials also warning about safety on local streets

(Seguin) – As students head back to class, Seguin ISD families and the community are being reminded of a pair of important items – patience and safety.

Sean Hoffmann, the chief communications officer for the Seguin ISD, says the first obvious sign that school is back in session will be the traffic. Hoffmann says folks are being asked to slow down, start early and watch out for students and those large yellow school buses.

“It’s always a learning experience for everyone on the first day of school. We have families that are new to the community. We have new educators in our schools as well and so we just

ask for patience and grace all around really from our families, from our teachers – have that patience for our bus drivers. Many are going to be on their routes for the first time or they are working with families, ensuring that we are getting the kids on the buses. They might have to stop and wait a few minutes for the kids to get to a bus stop so there will be a little bit of play, so we ask for patience, again, for our bus drivers and transportation department staff. The same thing goes for the afternoon during drop off when we drop students off. Again, we will be working through a few kinks this week with the hope that we get all of our students home safely and in

a timely manner,” said Hoffmann. Hoffmann says being vigilant while on the road is not only important this week but all year long.

“Also, I want to send a reminder out that we do have students who are riding bikes to school, students who walk to school. We will have more vehicles on the streets because parents will be dropping their students off and picking them up from school so again, patience is going to go a long way and again, having our community when they are out on the roads just to be vigilant and keep in mind, there will be extra traffic,” said Hoffmann. Described “as good medicine” for those in the school, Doc. Brown shared his experiences as an at-risk student and how because of empathy shown by each one of those positions posted at a campus, was able to muster up confidence leading to graduation and now of course his success as a motivational speaker, psychologist, businessman and as an “edu-tainer.”

Gutierrez says not only was he inspired by Doc Brown, but he felt that everyone in the district needed to hear or be reminded of his words.

“For us to just take a moment to reflect on ourselves and just all the weight that we carry so that we can be at our best for our students but to also think about others and the weight that they carry whether it’s our colleague or students, everybody is carrying an invisible backpack. We’ve got to think about that as our students are returning back to us. Many of our students are dealing with a lot of issues whether it’s at home, whether it’s social media, social pressures -- we have

Hoffmann also adds that like every district, there will be things that need a little ironing out. He says that’s when patience will be key.

“The best advice if parents or guardians have questions, comments, or concerns about any of our operations, the best bet is to contact the school first and foremost. A lot of times, that issue can be solved by

Not only did Doc. Brown encourage educators but he also reminded them of compassion fatigue, their role as a servant leader and more importantly, the need to have selfawareness when it comes to taking care of themselves and their homes as the school year progresses.

As this new school year takes off, Gutierrez also reminds Seguin ISD families of their role to help each student do their best and be their best.

“This is not just the role of educators and our staff to educate our students. It takes a village. So, we are looking forward to continuing to strengthen the partnership that we have with our parents this upcoming school year,” said Gutierrez.

Meanwhile the youngest of students enrolled in the Seguin ISD will have to wait a couple of more days to begin school. Pre-k students at Ball Early Childhood Center will begin their new school year on Wednesday.

Drivers today are also reminded that school zones are going back into effect. Seguin Police Department Officers will continue to have watchful eyes in and around local campuses.

They are also reminded to never pass a school bus when its red lights are flashing and to always maintain a safe distance when following them throughout the area.

District officials encourage families to check the website of their child’s respective school and/ or social media pages for daily updates, important reminders or changes and for fun photos of their back-to-school experience.

De La Cruz

Candor De La Cruz passed away on August 4, 2023 at age of 93. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jose and Victoria De La Cruz; brothers, Felix De La Cruz, Richard De La Cruz, Manuel De La Cruz, Eluterio De La Cruz and sisters Josephine Rodriguez and Petra Camposano. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Teresa De La Cruz; his only daughter Rebecca Soto; son-in-law Roman Ney Soto; grandson Ryan Ney Soto; and granddaughter Grace Lauren Soto.

Candor was born on July 28, 1930, in Seguin, Texas. He graduated from Seguin High School in 1951 and enlisted in the United States Army. He served in the Army from 1951 to 1953 as an Army Medical Tech.

On December 29, 1958, he married Teresa Alvarado. Soon after, he began his career as a furniture salesman. He worked for Starcke Furniture for nearly 40 years under three generations of the Starcke Family. He retired, but soon returned to work at Rooms to Go in Seguin until his 2nd retirement in the early 2000s. During his retirement, he loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren Ryan and Grace. He loved being outdoors and took pride in his yard, his floral gardens, and his pecan trees. Many times, he could be found outdoors watering his roses and plants. He could also be found enjoying his morning coffee at the nearby Donut Palace.

During his life, Candor was a dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Seguin. Candor and Teresa were part of the dedication ceremony of the church at its current location in 1967 and donated the baptismal font still used today. He served many roles in the parish including CCD teacher, Parish Council Member, Holy Name Society Member, Member of the Cusillitas, Eucharistic Minister and mass usher. He volunteered annually at the church bazaar setting up booths and assisting with bingo. During his lifetime, he was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club, the Lions Club, the American Legion and many other organizations. He will be remembered as a loving husband, wonderful father, and doting grandfather.

The family would like to give special thanks to Nesbit Living and Recovery Center and Heart to Heart Hospice for their exceptional care and support. Memorial contributions may be made to Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church or SCUC Special Olympics on behalf of his granddaughter Grace Soto.

Services honoring Candor will be held at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church on Friday, August 11, 2023. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. with the Holy Rosary recited at 10:00 a.m. and the Funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at San Geronimo Cemetery.

Milroy E. Schneider died at his home in Seguin on Wednesday, August 9, 2023. He was born on November 26, 1933, to Edgar and Ulla (Bielke) Schneider in the Zuehl Community. He was baptized and confirmed in the Redeemer Church in Zuehl. He was an active 4-H member in Guadalupe County.

Milroy graduated from Marion High School in 1951. He joined the Air Force and served in Korea during the Korean Conflict.

Milroy married Yvonne Raske in November 1955. After completing his military service, he began work in the meat department at Hild Bros in Marion. He then began working for Handy Andy in San Antonio and Austin.

Because of his meat-cutting skills, family members often invited Milroy to help when the butchering time arrived.

After he retired, Milroy and Yvonne returned to Seguin in 1999. He enjoyed working in their yard and loved gardening, completing woodwork projects, and grocery shopping. He enjoyed 9-pin bowling and was a member of the Marion Bowling Club.

Milroy is preceded in death by his wife Yvonne, his parents, his mother and father-in-law, Henry and Anona Rake, his sister Frances Hall and her husband James, sister in laws Claudia Schneider and Jenalyn Schneider and brother-in-law Rodney Kelso and sister-in-law Marilyn Rake.

Survivors include brother Harry Lee Schneider of La Vernia and Ray Joy Schneider of Illinois, sisters Gloria Schwarzlose and husband Raymond of Uvalde and Sylvia Kelso of Seguin, many nieces and nephews, and family members.

Roxanne Patterson, 89, passed peacefully on July 28, 2023. She was born on January 31, 1934, in Brownfield, Texas. She moved to Seguin in 1962 and began a career at Texas Lutheran College. She gathered many friends at TLC, The Guadalupe County Board of Realtors, and Cascades.

Roxanne married her sweetheart, Jerald “Pat” Patterson, on November 18, 1952. This union led to the births of Craig, Kim (Schmitt), and Lori (Hood). Roxanne is survived by seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Pat Patterson passed away in 2010.

Jack Hay, age 85, of Seguin, passed away on August 11, 2023. Jack was born on April 13, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas, to Lavon (Jackson) and Samuel Joseph Hay.

Jack served in the auto parts industry working as a parts salesman up until his retirement. He worked at several parts stores and automotive dealerships from Boerne to Gonzales. He enjoyed working in his shop and was a fan of Auto Racing. His most precious times were spent with his family.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Polly Hay; sons, Scott Hay and wife Debbie, and Samuel Lee Hay and wife Colette; grandchildren, Matthew Hay and wife Lanie, Rebecca Arnst and husband Kolby, and Shannon Canham and husband Colt; great-grandchildren Landon Arnst, James (J.J.) Arnst, Elizabeth Chamberlain, and Jaxson Hay; brother-inlaw Ben Hoeffner and wife Bea; several nieces, nephews, and other loving family members and friends.

Ouida Quita Gravett, age 89 of Round Rock, formerly of New Braunfels and Orange passed away on August 2, 2023. Quita was born on August 17, 1933, in Edom, Texas to parents Murphy & Ruthie King.

She moved to Orange TX and lived there for 68 years graduating from Stark High School in 1951. She was a member of Park Avenue United Methodist Church for over 50 years and was an active member of United Methodist Women’s Ministries. She worked for Don Dunaway Insurance Agency for 30 years.

After moving to the Austin area, she joined First Baptist Church of Round Rock and was a member of WOW. She then moved to the Ranch Senior Community in Cedar Park. She loved living there and made lots of

William Crawford “Dub” Dailey, Jr., age 85, of Seguin passed away at home on August 9, 2023. Dub was born on February 19, 1938, in Manor, Texas, to Pearl (Stowers) and William Crawford Dailey, Sr. Dub married Betty Jo Sherrill Dailey on October 10, 1958, in Austin, Texas.

Dub attended Austin High School after finishing his formative years at HornsbyDunlap Consolidated School. He then embarked on several business ventures across the state before settling into a 30-year career with the Austin Fire Department, retiring as a lieutenant in 1992. During this time, he also helped his father manage the family farm and ranch operations in Webberville. After retiring to the Seguin area, he enjoyed attending sporting events for his younger children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Dub never went anywhere without knowing someone.

Dub is preceded in death by his loving wife of 61 years, Betty Jo Dailey, his parents and seven brothers, and one sister.

Survivors include eight children: daughter Debbie Dailey; son Keith Dailey and wife Maggie; daughter Donna Sumners and husband David;

new friends and enjoyed church services and Bible study. Her children and family were the light of her life. She was a huge San Antonio Spurs fan and she always loved to dance. She was also an avid reader. Quita is preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, Donald L. Gravett and Horace Strange, son Keith Gravett, brother, Lindley King; sister, Carolyn Kerrigan, and husband Bob, and granddaughter, Kasondra Pipkin. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of JoAnn (Josephine) V. Casarez, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished friend. She was born on March 19, 1954, in Seguin, Texas, where she spent her childhood and formed lifelong bonds with her family and community. On August 9, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones at home, JoAnn peacefully left this world to join the eternal embrace of her heavenly Father. Throughout her life, JoAnn had a zest for life that was truly contagious. She approached every day with a beautiful smile and a heart full of compassion. Her warm and caring nature touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know her.

JoAnn had an array of interests that brought joy to her life. She loved immersing herself in the beauty of nature through camping trips with her family. One could often find her playing bingo, eagerly anticipating each call of the numbers. But perhaps nothing brought her more delight than gazing through the window at home, marveling at the graceful presence of the birds. JoAnn found solace and inspiration in these simple pleasures.

JoAnn’s love for family knew no bounds. She leaves behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the hearts of those she held dear. Her dearly beloved husband Julian Casarez stood by her side throughout their journey together. Their unwavering love was an inspiration to all who witnessed it. In addition

to Julian, JoAnn’s memory will continue to live on through their children: Jennifer Castillo (Michael), Julian Casarez (Monica), and Jessica Montes (Erick).

Being a grandmother brought immeasurable happiness to JoAnn’s life. She adored her grandchildren and cherished every moment spent with them. Tiffanie, Jeremiah, Sierra, Julian, Jillian, Isla, Timothy, and Emery brought boundless laughter and joy into her life, and their memories together will forever hold a special place in their hearts.

JoAnn’s strength and resilience were nurtured by the love and support of her family.

She is further survived by her siblings Rosa Sepulveda (Irineo), Oscar Villarreal (Diane), Gloria Macias (Luis), Sylvuia Mc Phail (Mike), Cynthia Rojas (Guillermo Sr.), Norma Camarillo (Joel), Abel Villarreal (Maria), Stephen Villarreal (Margie), Elizabeth Gomez (Mario), and Ruben Villarreal (Alma) were her pillars of strength throughout her life’s journey.

PPI Medications Linked To Greater Risk Of Dementia

(Washington, DC) -- PPI medications are being linked to a greater risk of dementia for those taking them over several years. That’s according to research published in the journal Neurology. PPI medications are proton pump inhibitors, which millions of Americans take to treat heartburn and acid reflux. They have been linked already in the past to a higher risk of kidney failure, stroke and early death.

Study: Those With Gender-Affirming Top Surgery Have Little Regret

(Washington, DC) -- People who have had a gender-affirming mastectomy have incredibly low rates of regret, according to a small new study. JAMA Surgery says the results are “overwhelmingly positive compared to other medical and nonmedical decisions.” This comes at a time as many argue in favor of laws that restrict gender-affirming care by pointing to the idea that patients may end up regretting it. The relatively small study with 139 participants has a median Satisfaction With Decision Scale score was five out of five. The Decision Regret Scale score median was 0 on a 100-point scale, meaning not a single respondent regretted their top surgery.

Seniors’ Medical Debt Soars

(Undated) -- Older Americans medical debt has soared to 54-billion-dollars in unpaid bills. According to a federal watchdog report it’s partly because medical providers are charging elderly patients the full price of an expensive medical service rather than work with the insurers that’s supposed to cover it. Seniors are also more likely to rely on more than one insurance plan. Nearly four-million older Americans reported unpaid medical bills even though 98-percent of them had insurance.

Obesity Drug Data Could Help Companies’ Case For U.S. Coverage

(Undated) -- New data shows a heart benefit of a Novo Nordisk obesity drug. That increases the chance of a payoff for that company and for Eli Lilly. The drugmakers have spent a record amount on lobbying to persuade the federal government to make the drugs eligible for Medicare coverage. U.S. law classifies weight-loss treatments as lifestyle drugs and bars Medicare from paying for them. Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly have spent close to one-point-three million dollars this year lobbying Congress on obesity and a bill reintroduced in July that would allow Medicare to reimburse for those medicines.
