As of noon on Saturday, wind speeds were nearing 40 miles per hour, with gusts of more than 50, knocking over trees and blowing barricades down, Seguin Public Information Officer Morgan Ash. “We have a lot power outages reported, trees
on streets and barricades blowing over,” she said. “We encourage residents to say indoors and out of the storm.” City and county officials were monitoring the storm from the Emergency Operations Center stationed in the Guadalupe County Courthouse. Guadalupe County is home to three tributaries, and officials said that with heavy rains, all three could easily spill over their banks. As of press time, Guadalupe County had ordered a voluntary evacuation for residents along the rivers and in the low laying areas. The county identified three potential shelters for use if the situation worsened, but none were open yet. STORM - 9A
What to expect through weekend Staff reports Slow-moving Hurricane Harvey slammed into the Texas coastline near Rockport Friday night as a Category 4 storm. By Saturday morning, Harvey had lost some of his steam, with experts downgrading the storm to a Category 1. Still, the massive storm was expected to dump tremendous amounts of rain on the Lone Star State over the weekend and into the early parts of next week. According to the latest projections, as of press time Saturday, Guadalupe County remained under both a Flood Warning and a Flash Flood Watch through the weekend. Residents can expect tropical storm conditions, with heavy rainfall and winds between 30 to 40 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph.

Harvey slams into Texas coast as Category 4 storm Frank Bajak Associated Press CORPUS CHRISTI — Hurricane Harvey settled over the Texas Gulf Coast on Saturday, lashing the shore with damaging winds and dumping torrents of rain across hundreds of miles of coastline that braced for life-threatening storm surges — walls of
water rushing inland. The fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. in more than a decade made landfall Friday night about 30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi as a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds. It gradually weakened over several hours to Category 1, but the system remained destructive, with sustained winds of 90 mph.
No deaths were immediately reported. High winds kept emergency crews out of many places, and it could be hours before authorities are able to fully assess damage in coastal communities. The mayor of Rockport, a coastal city of about 10,000 that was directly in the storm’s path, said his community took a blow
“right on the nose” that left “widespread devastation.” Early reports indicated that the roof of a high school had partially caved in and that the historic downtown sustained extensive damage. Mayor Charles “C.J.” Wax told The Weather Channel that the city’s emergency response system had been hampered by the loss of
cellphone service and other forms of communication. About 10 people were taken to the county jail for treatment after the roof of a senior housing complex collapsed, television station KIII reported. On Friday, Rockport Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Rios had offered ominous advice, telling the station that those who chose to stay

White Horse: Kiowa Chief In the “Snapshot” on Quanah Parker last week I wrote about his leadership in the attack in the Battle of Adobe Wall and his connection with Seguin through his descendants, Doug and Zack Parker at Parker’s Pharmacy. I found another interestFloyd McKee ing leader in the attack, a Snapshots of Seguin’s chief named White Horse. History He was a Kiowa Chief dur-

Due to his great physical strength and intelligence he became an outstanding leader and in 1867, he led attacks against the peaceful Navajo tribe on the Pecos River. The Navajos pursued the raid-

SLICE OF LIFE Crossing Texas by wagon train Disastrous flooding in county
In 1972 the Guadalupe River crested at 32.5 feet devastating the county and Seguin .... This weekend’s flood looks like it will far surpass that in ferocity as Guadalupe Blanco River Authority officials were estimating a crest of 35 feet on Saturday afternoon. — Oct. 17, 1998, The Seguin Gazette-Enterprise

A government wagon train forded the Red River on Aug. 23, 1857 and began the long, hard trip across the Lone Star State. Ever wonder what it was like to travel in Texas in those hot and dangerous days before cars, trains, planes and -- heaven forbid! -- air conditioning? While most voyagers were too busy staying alive to record their impressions for posterity, a member of an 1850’s odyssey kept an unusually detailed daily log that provides a rare first-hand account. The men-only caravan under the leadership of
Bartee Haile This Week In Texas History Col. James B. Leach was 53 days out of Memphis, when it rolled into Texas on that summer day more than a century and a half ago. The job of the construction crew was to improve the
road from El Paso to Fort Yuma, but first they had to get there. Their first night under the Lone Star stars was spent nine miles southwest of Preston, a Grayson County hamlet dismissed by the anonymous commentator as “a place of but little note.” (Old Preston, as it is now called, lies in a watery grave under Lake Texoma.) Three days later, they passed through Gainesville, the only town on the itinerary. The next day, the expedition encountered “several antelope, the first we have met with. A few hot
headed Nimrods gave chase to them but they might as well have chased the North Wind.” Camp was pitched that evening at Head of Elm, soon to be renamed Saint Jo, in the brand-new county of Montague. Following the trail blazed in 1849 by Gen. Randolph B. Marcy, Col. Leach and his men saw their first rattlesnake on Aug. 30 and on the 31st finally came face-toface with honest-to-goodness Indians. The rattler was killed, but the red men, a couple of Caddo and a like number of Delaware, could not have been friendlier and
were allowed to live. The next noon, the wagon train reached Fort Belknap on a hill overlooking the Brazos River and a short hop from the future town of Graham. Refreshed by two days of military hospitality, the gadabouts abandoned Marcy’s trail for a more southerly course. The long-distance sighting of Comanches clearly unnerved the chronicler. Conceding the fact that the Indians on their reservation were “at present at peace with the U.S.,” he added ominously, “But little reliance is placed in the
good faith of these savages. Certainly a more villainous and treacherous looking set have not often been seen.” After four days of complaints about “a severe and obstinate case of inflammation of the bow(e)ls and stomach,” Col. Leach awoke too sick to travel on Sep. 6. The highlight of the day off was the discharge of a man “for idleness and insubordination.” “He will tomorrow commence his solitary march back to the States,” explained the expedition reporter, who HAILE - 5A
Students, teachers Sofie, the master talk new year hopes of escape artistry Traditionally at this time of year I pen a “Back to School” column offering what I hope will be words of inspiration to the hundreds of students and their teachers heading back to their classrooms. This year, however, I decided to go right to the horse’s mouth, so to speak, and ask students themselves along with a couple of teachers what they were most looking forward to as the 2017-18 school year begins. I believe you’ll agree their answers are all over the map from funny to sarcastic to totally sincere. What I am most looking forward to this year? Three words — football, football, football. Mark, grade 9 The food in my school cafeteria. Wait! You know I’m joking, right? — Israel, grade 8 Just meeting my new teachers and I hope they’re nice. — Carla, grade 3 The band! Gosh, I love our band — it’s the best. — Mike, grade 11
Mike Fitsko Life Lessons Homework every night — NOT. With any luck Trump will declare homework unconstitutional. — Jerry, grade 11 I’m so excited about my classes. I’m taking advanced placement (AP) English and history. — Jennifer, grade 12 Seeing my Mom every day at school. She will be teaching at my new school this year, but not in my grade. It will be fun having her there, especially if I need extra lunch money. — Brenda, grade 5 I am looking forward to being just one year away from UT. Go Longhorns! — Travis, grade 12 Lunch! And maybe sci-

Are there any other holidays I left out? — Leon, grade 10 I can’t wait to see my older brother playing varsity football. He says his team is going all the way to State this year. — Angela, grade 5 Finally driving my own car to school and not riding those big yellow beasts. While we were eclipse chasing, things at home were a little exciting too. In addition to leaving behind my husband, Adam, and our eldest daughter, Sierra, we left behind a plethora of pets. Including one little bunny who is now known as Jailbreak Sofie Janeway. Sofie, who is a cinnamon colored Holland Lop bunny, has just turned four months old, which is young to be an escape artist. We use the wire panels of a doggy play pen to temporarily close off rooms that don’t have doors when we are not around. All of this worked fine, until this week. Because this week, Sofie decided she would not be fenced in. PROSAPIO - 5A

OUR VOICE
Stay safe out there, Seguin Editor’s note: In the interest of ensuring the safety of our newsroom, printing press and distribution teams, the Seguin Gazette opted to move Saturday’s press time deadline from 9 p.m. to 2 p.m. Still, we ask that you are patient with us and apologize for the inconvenience should any papers arrive late. This time last week, Seguin residents were waiting in lines, hyped about a rare natural event. The solar eclipse was a delightful and awe-inspiring event. This week, things are a little different. We’re standing in lines and dreading a rare natural event. As of Friday evening, Hurricane Harvey had slammed into the Texas coast as a Category 4 storm, with wind speeds up to 130 mph and Gov. Greg Abbott already had sent a written request to President Trump asking him to declare a major disaster in Texas. Seguin Mayor Don Keil signed off on the city’s own disaster declaration Friday afternoon as residents raced for last-minute supplies and emergency personnel braced for what the National Weather Service has called a “life-threatening flood event.” Stormy conditions that began in Seguin Friday night were expected to worsen throughout Saturday. We pray that, as you read this, the worst is over and our city and community members have weathered the storm safely. Unfortunately, chances are that heavy rain, flooding and high winds will have left our community somewhat bruised and battered. And yet, we have little doubt that Harvey — for all his bluster and might — will prove another example of how willing and capable the people of Seguin are to come together during times of trouble. In the interim, we urge all residents to be prepared, be cautious and be safe. Our Voice is the opinion of the Seguin Gazette editorial board.
Addressing the US opioid crisis We have an opioid crisis in America, and the following is a proposed solution: We do an enormous disservice to our youth by not providing an opportunity to work and be a productive member of society — a given in primitive societies, but lost in the Age of Industrialization— and if only one drug-related death is prevented by our stepping up to the plate on behalf of our youth ... the cost will be well worth it! To expand on what is being proposed: First, in creating jobs, it is essential that our mind-set is based on the truism that we have far more work that needs to be done in America, than persons to fill these jobs. A few Americans are aware ... unfortunately too few ... that we have the “legal authorization” on the books

America’s Charlie Gard? Think again ... In late July, Charlie Gard, the baby stricken with the rare and typically fatal genetic disorder known as Mitochondrial DNA Depletion Syndrome, died. Charlie was at the center of a legal battle between his parents and the British healthcare system over who ultimately had the authority to decide if, and when, to remove the infant’s life support. The story garnered international attention because of the ramifications stemming from the court’s decision to remove Charlie’s life support; not the least of which was the alarming degree of authority wielded by Britain’s government-run healthcare
Richard Kocur Guest columnist system in overriding the wishes of Charlie’s parents. Tragically, Charlie is now gone. In the meantime, a remarkably similar story is now beginning to unfold in the United States. Russell Cruzan III is a four-month-old baby from Michigan who suffers from a variation of the same rare condition as Charlie Gard.
OUR GOVERNMENT President Donald Trump MAIL: The White House, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, Washington, DC 20500 PHONE: 202-456-1111 ELECTRONIC: www.whitehouse. gov/contact/submit-questions-andcomments
The similarities, however, don’t end there. Russell’s parents, like Charlie’s parents, have vowed to do everything in their power to treat their baby. They are pursuing an experimental treatment with leading specialists in the United States just as Charlie’s parents did. Russell’s parents are also in the process of raising the funds necessary to cover their fight to prolong their son’s life, as did Charlie’s parents. Given all these similarities, what’s the significant difference between these two cases? Russell’s care will be administered under the auspices of a free-market healthcare system in
the United States, while Charlie’s care and medical outcome was subject to the bureaucratic nature of Britain’s socialized healthcare system. The Gard and Cruzan cases demonstrate the stark difference in the overall philosophy and approach underpinning the two healthcare systems. In the U.S. system, Russell’s parents are pursuing a path they think is in the best interests of their child but doing so without any interference from administrators, lawyers, judges, or healthcare bureaucrats. The decisions on Russell’s treatment, quality of life, and very likely end of life will ultimately rest in his
parents hands. In the U.K. system, Connie Yates and Chris Gard, Charlie’s parents, were afforded none of the same opportunities. This profound difference between the two nearly identical situations lies at the heart of why socialized healthcare falls short of its claim to put patients first. Healthcare in the United States, despite its flaws, still represents the world’s best example of a patientcentered medical system. While pundits, politicians, and policy-makers debate what the healthcare system should ultimately look like and how to enable greater patient access, these two cases have clearly shown

that a move toward a more socialized healthcare system is not the answer. Russell Cruzan III has a long and difficult road ahead: a life-threatening condition, an experimental treatment, and costly care. Pence, Cruz pull out of Nevada event over Harvey GARDNERVILLE, Nev. (AP) — Vice President Mike Pence and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz have canceled their scheduled appearances at a Republican fundraiser in Nevada this weekend
because of a hurricane headed for Cruz’ home state. Nevada Attorney General Adam Laxalt said he talked to Pence and Cruz Friday about Hurricane Harvey and the catastrophic effects
it could have on the Gulf Coast. He said they decided it would be more appropriate for them to focus their time and attention on the people affected by the storm.

under the care of the post physician and to catch up as soon as he was back on his feet. During the colonel’s absence, “an incident rather laughable” occurred. Everyone had turned in for the night, when without warning the sentries testfired their muskets. “One person, from whom nothing else could have been expected, sought a safe hiding place in the tall bear grass. He was speedily joined by another, a great tall strapping booby, who tremblingly asked in a whisper, ‘Do you think we shall be safe here?’” At midday on Sep. 18, “Col. Leach rejoined the train much improved in health” and was welcomed four afternoons later by the worst storm of the journey. “Wind, rain and hail of great severity overtook us (and) such was the quantity of water which fell in the space of one hour that it converted the road into a quagmire. A norther in the meantime came sweeping down upon us, which rendered our situation exceed-
ingly disagreeable.” The wagons crossed the Pecos on Sep. 30 and tracked the river downstream for two days before turning due west toward the Davis Mountains. Fort Davis was a sight for sore eyes on Oct. 8 after a difficult week in some of the roughest and driest country in Texas. The weeklong trek to the Rio Grande tested the endurance of man and beast, but the leisurely pace of the last leg along the great river let both catch their breath. The Leach wagon train entered El Paso on Oct. 22 completing the “waltz” across Texas in 62 days. The rugged bunch covered 824 miles in 56 travel days for an average of slightly under 15 miles. And this was accomplished without the loss of a single life in spite of the man-eating reputation of the Lone Star frontier.
From page 3A seemed to forget Texas was no longer a foreign country. Though still under the weather the next morning, Leach refused to let his illness impede their progress and gave the order to break camp. He spent the following week flat on his back without once relinquishing command. The subject of the longest entry in the journal was “a village of prairie dogs” seen on Sep. 11. “The active little denizens of this populous settlement were out of sight in an instant. During the day we passed through a number of these towns and invariably found the little folk living therein retreating at a moments warning to their burrows where they are altogether safe from attack.” By the time the wagon train pulled into Fort Chadbourne, halfway between modern Abilene and San Angelo, on Sep. 12, Col. Leach was sinking fast. He agreed to stay behind
PROSAPIO From page 3A We contacted her over the phone for an interview (with the permission of the warden, of course). Me: Sofie, I understand you are no longer happy staying in the loft. Sofie: I need room to run! Me: You have a ton of room to run. It’s a 15-foot long loft. Sofie: That’s barely enough room for me to get a decent hop in. Besides none of my friends around here have to stay in a cage all day. Klyde: She’s got a point, mom. Me: Klyde, get off the phone. Klyde (whispered aside): Remember, you don’t have to tell her anything incriminating. Me: Are you actually advising her on her Miranda rights? Put Sofie back on! Sofie: Actually we were discussing the Geneva Convention.

Me: The Geneva Convention? I don’t believe there’s a rabbit provision. Klyde (shouting in the background): We are still reviewing! Me: Let’s focus here, Sofie. I hear you’ve really used your head to figure this out. Sofie: Yes! I discovered that if you bang on the gate a little, it moves. So with a combination banging and grabbing with my teeth, I can pull the wire out from behind the furniture. Me: Not even the dogs have figured this out. Sofie: Well, they aren’t particularly bright… Klyde: HEY!
The community of Mill Creek was established eight miles east of Seguin on the banks of Mill Creek. The McCaugherty, Douglass, and Lill families were among the first in the area. The Mill Creek School opened in 1854, then a church and Sunday School was established in 1856. A post office opened in 1891 near the mouth of the creek and operated for twelve years, closing in 1903. Mill Creek had a one teacher school for sixty area students in 1904. In 1915, the church burned and was not rebuilt. In 1922, the school closed and the remaining students were transferred to Seguin. The school building was used as a church for the next seven years until it burned in 1930. By 1940. there was no evidence the community ever existed.
McKEE From page 2A Quanah Parker and gained considerable fame in the 1870s in raids against the Texas Hill Country settlements near Seguin. In one raid he and his band stole more than seventy mules from the Army. On June 22, 1870, they attacked a party of cattle drovers on the Chisholm Trail, killed and scalped two men before a detachment of troops came to their relief. The Anglo settlers considered him the most dangerous leader among the Kiowas. The next month he led his band into the hill country and killed Gottleib Koozer and took his wife and six children as captives. The captives were ransomed for one hundred dollars each two months later. White Horse continued his raids and in September he attacked a stagecoach and killed Martin Wurmser, a trooper who was serving as part of a military escort. White Horse also participated in the Warren Wagon Train Massacre in May, 1871 (covered in a previous “Snapshot”). In 1871, while chiefs Satanta and Big Tree were imprisoned in the Texas Huntsville Prison, he and Big Bow led an attack on a wagon train which resulted in the deaths of seventeen Mexican teamsters. During a skirmish with the United States Cavalry the same year he was wounded in the arm. On May 19, 1871, White Horse’s brother was killed in a fight with L.
H. Lucketts’s surveying crew in the Hill Country. This led to a revenge raid and an attack on the homestead of Abel Lee on the Brazos River north of Kerrville. Lee, his fourteen year old daughter and his wife were killed. The three remaining children were taken into captivity. The Lee children were ransomed a few months later for one hundred dollars each. In June, 1874, he joined Quanah Parker in the second Battle of Adobe Walls and after the battle he and his band retreated to the Palo Duro Canyon with the Comanches. He was there when Colonel Ranald S. Mackenzie’s troops attacked and killed all their horses, forcing the Comanches and Kiowas to surrender. In September, 1875, he was identified by Kicking Bird as the chief that led the various raids and was sent to St. Augustine, Florida, because of the atrocities he had committed. In 1878, he was sent to the Indian reservation near Fort Sill in Oklahoma, where he lived out the remainder of his life with his wife and family. He died from a stomach ailment in 1892 and was buried on the reservation. He and Quanah Parker were among the last leaders in Indian warfare. He began in the machine shop and learned all there was to know about Caterpillar machinery. He worked as a field mechanic, parts and service representative, and opened and managed a Holt branch in Beeville. He ended his Holt career based in San Antonio appraising used equipment for trade in value, travelling to several states. During Curtis’ time with the Holt Companies, the family relocated to Corpus Christi in 1964 where they remained for 23 years. Doris and Curtis also lived in Beeville, McQueeney, and Seguin before he retired in 1992. Just prior to his retirement, Curtis and Doris built a home on 8 acres on Vivroux Ranch Road in the Capote Hills. Curtis had always dreamed of living in the country again as he had been raised. He was always an outdoor person who enjoyed his property, grew plants, trees, and gardened, and had many animals as companions. He also worked part-time for Jerry Vordenbaum, a Geronimo Beef Master Rancher, and later for Keith Warren at the Hidden Springs White Tail Deer Ranch before retiring for good at the spring chicken age of 83. UT sued for removing Confederate statues AUSTIN (AP) — The University of Texas is being sued for removing four Confederate statues from the main area of campus in Austin. The Sons of Confederate Veterans filed the lawsuit Wednesday, three days after the statues were quickly taken down following a late-night order from University President Greg Fenves. Three of the statues are of Confederate Postmaster John H. Reagan, and Confederate Gens. Robert E. Lee and Albert Sidney Johnston. The fourth is of former governor James Stephen Hogg, who was the son of a Confederate veteran. Fenves said while the university aims to preserve and study history, it must also acknowledge when history runs counter to the university’s core values. “Erected during the
period of Jim Crow laws and segregation, the statues represent the subjugation of African-Americans. That remains true today for white supremacists who use them to symbolize hatred and bigotry,” Fenves said. The removals followed the deadly white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia. The school said the three statues of Confederate military and political leaders will be moved to the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History. Hogg’s statute may be re-installed at a different campus location, Fenves said. The statues were paid for by former University of Texas regent and Confederate veteran George Littlefield in 1920. The lawsuit argues the school broke its agreement with Littlefield by removing the statues.

Sharapova-Halep at US Open; Federer-Nadal could be semifinal NEW YORK (AP) — Welcome back to Grand Slam tennis, Maria Sharapova. There will be no easing into the U.S. Open for Sharapova, whose first match at a major tournament since her doping suspension comes against No. 2-seeded Simona Halep. That first-round matchup was determined by Friday’s draw, which also eliminated the possibility of a men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal.

Suit from Mayweather-Pacquiao fight KO’d Associated Press LAS VEGAS — A federal judge in California knocked out a class-action lawsuit Friday that had been filed on behalf of fight fans and pay-perview subscribers upset that boxer Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines wasn’t 100 percent healthy for his May 2015 fight with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in Las Vegas. In dismissing a consolidated batch of lawsuits, U.S. District Judge R. Gary Klausner in Los Angeles nevertheless said he has sympathy for fans around the country

who felt deceived that Pacquiao didn’t disclose he had a shoulder injury until about three hours before the fight. Mayweather won a 12-round decision in an event that drew record cable TV viewership and
criticism that the matchup between two of the best fighters of a generation failed to live up its billing. The judge ruled that fans still got what cable TV providers said viewers paid more than $400 million to see — a boxing
match between Pacquiao and Mayweather. “Plaintiffs had no legally protected interest or right to see an exciting fight, a fight between two totally healthy and fully prepared boxers, or a fight that lived up to the significant pre-fight hype,” Klausner wrote in his 11-page order. “The reason that competitive sports is so compelling is precisely because the outcome is always at least somewhat uncertain,” the judge said. “Allowing sports fans to sue ... could destroy the very thing that makes sports fandom so special.”
MARION FOOTBALL
The ruling came one day before another big pay-per-view event — a Saturday fight in Las Vegas between Mayweather and mixed martial arts star Conor McGregor that was drawing pay-perview comparisons with the Mayweather-Pacquiao event. The complaint filed in 2015 involved dozens of plaintiffs in states including New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Arizona, Nevada, Florida, Maryland and Texas. Mark Tratos, an attorney in Las Vegas for Floyd Mayweather Jr., said the judge decided the fans
weren’t damaged and had no standing to sue. Hart Robinovitch, a Scottsdale, Arizona, attorney representing more than two dozen clients in 13 states, characterized plaintiffs as “down, but not out.” He said he may appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. “There were a lot of angry people,” Robinovitch told The Associated Press. “Not only the guy who paid $100 for pay-per-view, but anyone who paid for this without knowing the facts.”

A trio of Bulldogs pile onto one of the Holy Cross Knights during their scrimmage on Thursday.
Bulldogs tested against Knights Scott Bretzke Special to the Gazette The final tune up for Coach Bruce Salmon and the Marion Bulldogs 2017 campaign took place at Veteran’s Stadium Thursday night. This is Salmons sixth season as Head Coach and Athletic Director. The bulldogs welcome five new faces to its coaching staff, Matt Wright, Matt Reeh, Cliff Hill, Jesus Galvan and Rhett Bohanon. This year’s returning coaches are Taylor Greene, Tim Tesch, Robert Young, Myles Duelm and Mike Honeycutt. All are hoping to put together a successful football season. The opponent this week was the Holy Cross Knights. The Knights are coming off a 2016 season notching nine wins. The Bulldogs team offense was up first and wasted little time to make a big play. Senior Running Back, Jacob Berry, took the handoff from junior quarterback Tayler Mills. He tried inside the tackles first, then broke to the sidelines and turned on the jets. It was a 60-plus yard touchdown run. This year’s backfield will feature the combo of junior Running back Kage Armstrong, who is looking forward to having a breakout season, and Berry. The duo has been dubbed “Thunder and Lightning”. The Bulldog (1st team) defensive miscues on the visitors first possession led to a short screen pass by the Knights. Turning into a score after running through some tackles. The first part of the scrimmage the coaches were on the field coaching the players. During the second half the coaches return to the sidelines and coach, simulating an actual game. During one drive in the

second half, Berry had an impressive run for over 30 yards. Unfortunately, the Knights defense halted the possible scoring drive by picking off a pass inside their own ten yard line. This year Tayler Mills will be steering the ship. He took the reigns as quarterback from JD Raggio. Raggio graduated in May. Mills is familiar with the offense having received some snaps during last year’s season. S enior Nathan Newman had a handful of snaps, guiding the offense. Sophomore Zachary Goodwin took some snaps as well. Running back Cameron Cororan was used to create depth in the backfield. The core of receivers, led by Newman, made clutch catches in the middle of the field. Juniors Jackson Allen and Jacob Wallace round out the receiving core. Both had receptions in the contest. Scrimmages are used as measuring sticks to give the coaches something to improve on and gain consistency to build on. Bruce Salmon said, “Pass protection broke down, Holy Cross brought some blitzes. The defense looked good at times.” “We got beat up in other areas. We have to step it up and do a better job. They are growing up in front of everybody. That’s what makes it fun,” added Salmon. This Friday night officially kicks off the season. The Panthers from Austin Eastside Memorial will visit Veteran Stadium for a 7:30 kickoff. The Bulldogs shut out the Panthers last year 53-0.

Early testing Matadors scrimmage against Wagner Priscilla Aguirre Sports@seguingazette.com Scrimmages are designed for each team to learn from their mistakes, for players both fresh-faced and seasoned to have the opportunity to prove themselves to their coaches in the hopes of moving up the depth chart. Early Friday morning at D.W. Rutledge Stadium, the Seguin Matadors pitted themselves against the Wagner Thunderbirds to evaluate themselves — and for the coaches to find their starters for the upcoming games ahead. With only five seniors on the Mats roster, head coach Travis Bush is left to evaluate the remaining underclassmen and to pick his go-to quarterback for the season. “We’ve got a lot of young kids,” Bush said. “Quarterback wise, we have one sophomore and two juniors and we are

So we looked at a bunch of different people and a bunch of different things.” During the controlled part of the game, the coaches of each team were able to stand and run on the field alongside their players. Junior quarterback Anthony Gonzalez stepped up with the first touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Hayden
Haas. Shortly after, Seguin running back Clarence Tibbs broke away for a 70-yard touchdown. Switching out players, sophomore quarterback Jhalen Mickles subs in for Gonzalez. Mickles proves himself by passing two touchdowns, one to his brother Michael Mickles and to Parker Nixon. For the timed part of the game, the coaches were on the sidelines — just as if it was a regu-
lar quarter. For the only touchdown during the quarter, Gonzalez passed to junior wide receiver Terrance Brandon. The Mats defense made several sacks, tackled wide receivers at the right time and was close to catching interceptions. The Wagner Thunderbirds scored two touchdowns in the controlled half and the timed half. “They were physical and a big athletic team,” Bush said. “We showed a lot of good things but at the same time there are a lot of things we have to work on for both sides.” The Seguin Matadors are scheduled to play against Austin Travis on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. at Seguin High School.

COAST From page 1A rain had fallen in some places. The storm posed the first major emergency management test of President Donald Trump’s administration. The president signed a federal disaster declaration for coastal counties Friday night. Trump commended the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency for his handling of the hurricane. In a tweet Saturday morning addressed to FEMA head Brock Long, Trump said: “You are doing a great job — the world is watching! Be safe.” In a separate tweet, Trump said he is monitoring the hurricane closely from Camp David. “We are leaving nothing to chance. City, State and Federal Govs. working great together!” The president also tweeted, “We have fantastic people on the ground, got there long before #Harvey. So far, so good!” Harvey’s approach sent tens of thousands of people fleeing inland, hoping to escape the wrath of a menacing storm that threatened not only the coast but a wide swath of Texas that is home to oil refineries, chemical plants and dangerously flood-prone Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city. In Corpus Christi, the major city closest to the storm’s center, wind whipped palm trees and stinging sheets of horizontal rain slapped against hotels and office buildings along the seawall as the storm made landfall. Daybreak revealed downed lamp posts and tree limbs and roof tiles torn off buildings. The city’s marina was nearly unscathed, save an awning ripped from a restaurant entrance and a wooden garbage bin uprooted and thrown. Fueled by warm Gulf of Mexico waters, Harvey grew rapidly, acceler-
ating from a Category 1 early Friday morning to a Category 4 by evening. Its transformation from an unnamed storm to a lifethreatening behemoth took only 56 hours, an incredibly fast intensification. Harvey came ashore as the fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. in 13 years and the strongest to strike Texas since 1961’s Hurricane Carla, the most powerful Texas hurricane on record. Based on the atmospheric pressure, Harvey ties for the 18th strongest hurricane on landfall in the U.S. since 1851 and ninth strongest in Texas. A worst-case scenario is that the hurricane could hug the coast for days and stay strong enough to remain a tropical storm. Forecasts call for as much as 30 inches of rain to fall by next Wednesday, with some areas getting as much as 40 inches, according to the hurricane center. Meanwhile, the storm surge could bring flooding of 6 to 12 feet to a coastal area that includes Matagorda Island and Port O’Connor. Before the storm arrived, home and business owners raced to nail plywood over windows and fill sandbags. Steady traffic filled the highways leaving Corpus Christi, but there were no apparent jams. In Houston, where mass evacuations can include changing major highways to a one-way vehicle flow, authorities left traffic patterns unchanged. Just hours before the projected landfall, the governor and Houston leaders issued conflicting statements on evacuation. After Gov. Greg Abbott urged more people to flee, Houston authorities told people to remain in their homes and recommended no widespread evacuations. In a Friday news conference that addressed Houston officials’ decision to not have a voluntary or mandatory evacuation, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner said there might be a “greater danger” in having people who don’t need to be evacuated on roads that could flood.

STORM From page 1A As officials continue to monitor the situation in Guadalupe County, coastal towns began assessing the damages brought by the tropical storm. Hurricane Harvey rolled over the Texas Gulf Coast on Saturday, smashing homes and businesses and lashing the shore with wind and rain so intense that drivers were forced off the road because they could not see in front of them. The fiercest hurricane to hit the U.S. in more than a decade came ashore late Friday about
30 miles northeast of Corpus Christi as a mammoth Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds. It weakened overnight to Category 1. But the storm’s most destructive powers were just beginning. Rainfall that will continue for days could dump more than 40 inches of water and inundate many communities, including dangerously flood-prone Houston, the nation’s fourth-largest city. “Our focus is shifting to the extreme and potentially historic levels of flooding that we could see,” said Eric Blake, a specialist at the National Hurricane Center in Miami. No deaths were immediately reported. High
FEMA From page 1A staging in San Antonio — we’re hoping we don’t need them. The national flood insurance program has adjustors who are also situation in Texas to support the initial damage assessment.” As the supplies and volunteers gathered and waited for deployment, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott asked the president to preemptively declare as state of emergency. On Friday evening, President Donald Trump signed the order,
winds kept emergency crews out of many places, and authorities said it could be hours before emergency teams are able to fully assess damage. By dawn, nearly 300,000 consumers were without power in the coastal region, and nearly 20 inches of rain had fallen in some places. The mayor of Rockport, a coastal city of about 10,000 that was directly in the storm’s path, said his community took a blow “right on the nose” that left “widespread devastation,” including homes, businesses and schools that were heavily damaged. Some structures were destroyed. Mayor Charles “C.J.” Wax told The Weather
declaring a state of emergency for Texas. FEMA on Friday urged residents to charge cell phones and to download the agency’s phone app, follow them on Twitter at @ FEMAregion6 or follow FEMA on Facebook. The National Hurricane Center says Hurricane Harvey has strengthened to a Category 4 storm. The center says Harvey has sustained wind speeds of 130 mph as the powerful storm churns off the Texas coast. Forecasters are labeling it a “life-threatening storm.” The storm quickly grew Thursday from a tropical depres-
Channel that the city’s emergency response system had been hampered by the loss of cellphone service and other forms of communication. About 10 people were taken to the county jail for treatment after the roof of a senior housing complex collapsed, television station KIII reported. On Friday, Rockport Mayor Pro Tem Patrick Rios offered ominous advice, telling the station that people who chose not to evacuate should mark their arm with a Sharpie pen, implying that the marks would make it easier for rescuers to identify them. sion into a Category 1 hurricane, and then developed into a Category 2 storm early Friday. By Friday afternoon, it had become a Category 3 storm before strengthening to a Category 4. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Friday afternoon opened Texas state parks to hurricane evacuees to camp for free. Several parks on the coast and in South Texas have been closed for the hurricane, but the Texas Parks and Wildlife department posted a map of available camping sites away from the path of the hurricane to its website . Find Your Home in Downtown By: Kyle Kramm, Main Street and CVB Director, kkramm@seguintexas.gov (830) 401-2448
Big city living small-town style is coming to downtown Seguin. Second story loft apartments are currently under construction at 101 South River Street. When completed in the spring of 2018, these apartments will provide the desirable walkable lifestyle of having restaurants, bars, and shops right outside your front door. Owner Jason Howell is constructing seven efficiency apartments averaging about 300 square feet. The apartments will include onsite laundry, off street parking and are pet-friendly. Howell took advantage of the City of Seguin’s Downtown Loan Pool that provides low interest loans to be used for qualified rehabilitation expenses. “In order for us to have a truly vibrant downtown we need to increase the number of people who call downtown Seguin home,” said Howell, speaking on his reasoning for constructing the apartments, “The people who will live in these apartments will support the downtown businesses and make it more attractive for new small businesses to open in the downtown district.” Currently there is limited residential products in downtown Seguin, but this will be changing as several
other property owners are in the planning stages of creating second story apartments. Already on the market in downtown is the recently remodeled Aumont Hotel. The hotel completed its renovation of its eight apartments two months ago and currently has three spaces available for lease. Contact Marie Gabriel at (830) 438-4385 ext. 1100 for information on leasing an apartment in the Aumont Hotel. Apartments are an excellent use for filling up unused second floor space, creating a fully occupied and activated building. Howell is working on filling up his building with a restaurant on the first floor. “I would love to work with an experienced restaurant owner to open on the first floor,” said Howell, “Being in close proximity to City Hall, the Courthouse and Central Park, a nice restaurant would make a perfect anchor for this section of downtown.” To stay informed about the apartments and other upcoming projects in downtown Seguin, follow the Seguin Main Street Facebook page at www.facebook. com/SeguinMainStreet.

3A - SUNDAY, AUGUST 27, 2017 · SEGUIN GAZETTE
6. The highlight of the day off was the discharge of a man “for idleness and insubordination.” “He will tomorrow commence his solitary march back to the States,” explained the expedition reporter, who HAILE - 5A
Students, teachers Sofie, the master talk new year hopes of escape artistry
Traditionally at this time of year I pen a “Back to School” column offering what I hope will be words of inspiration to the hundreds of students and their teachers heading back to their classrooms.
And maybe sci-
ence. — Keaton, grade 8 As a teacher I am looking forward to a year of projecting kindness, calm, integrity, laughter and wisdom to my students. — Ms. C, grades 7/8 What am I looking forward to this coming school year — Thanksgiving break, Christmas break, Spring break and of course, Comal County Fair Day. Are there any other holidays I left out? — Leon, grade 10 I can’t wait to see my older brother playing varsity football. He says his team is going all the way to State this year. — Angela, grade 5 Finally driving my own car to school and not riding those big yellow beasts. I can’t believe I will not have to stand at the bus stop waiting and waiting for the big, ugly yellow taxi. — Jeremy, grade 11 What I love most is meeting all my new students and getting to know them. We decided after our loss of Tommy, our outdoor bunny, that we’d become indoor
Winter Prosapio Crib Notes bunny keepers. And since you can litter box train a rabbit, it’s been a pretty smooth process. But rabbits are chewers of all things, like shoes, cords, cardboard, wood, and notebooks, so
we’ve had to have bunny zones. She has free range in the loft area, but not the bedroom since there are some pretty fancy boots in our closet and a door that can be a little finicky about staying closed. We use the wire panels of a doggy play pen to temporarily close off rooms that don’t have doors when we are not around. All of this worked fine, until this week. Because this week, Sofie decided she would not be fenced in. PROSAPIO - 5A

OUR VOICE
Stay safe out there, Seguin
Editor’s note: In the interest of ensuring the safety of our newsroom, printing press and distribution teams, the Seguin Gazette opted to move Saturday’s press time deadline from 9 p.m.
YOUR LETTERS
To fund it, here is a pro-market, deficit-neutral proposal: The Neighbor-To-Neighbor Job Creation Act or NTN — A federally mandated Social Insurance, owned by our employed, to provide a fund to hire/ in America, as I write, to limit our train our unemployed. youth unemployment to 4 percent To use Seguin, to illustrate, and (Pubic Law 15 USC § 3101) — i.e., at independent of the above proposed no time should our youth unemploy- law — a 1 percent of salary policy ment exceed 4 percent (3 percent if cost for citizens who work in Seguin over age 21)— and anyone wanting should be more than adequate to proto work should be able to find a job. vide the funds necessary to hire our And thus, fortunately in America youth who want to work, but can’t we have the “legal authorization” to find a job. And as noted, if this prefix this problem. Unfortunately, however, Congress vents even one drug-related death it has yet to implement this law, which will be well worth the modest cost. In closing, there are an abundance they passed--and not inconsequenof jobs that go unfilled — that can be tial, we stood on one foot and then filled via “grant-in-aid” type of job the other and let Flint and the Rust Belt rot into decay—when we had the proposals — from our school districts, libraries, etc. legal authority to prevent--creating a resentment that lingers to this Jim Green day—and with unconscionable consequences!
OUR GOVERNMENT President Donald Trump

Haile writes This Week In Texas History which appears every Sunday. He welcomes your comments and questions at haile@pdq.net and invites you to visit his web site at barteehaile.com.
OBITUARIES
Curtis Terry Rodgers, Jr.
Curtis Terry Rodgers, Jr. of Seguin passed into eternal life at 87 on August 20, 2017. He was born March 15, 1930 in Waurika, OK to Curtis T. Rodgers, Sr. and Susie Bell (Emerson) Rodgers. Shortly after the family moved to the Rio Grande Valley where he grew up. Curtis attended Donna High School where he joined the National Guard prior to graduating in May, 1950. On December 5, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Doris (Oetzel) Rodgers. They lived in Weslaco for most of the next 12 years and were blessed with 2 daughters and a son. In the fall of 1961, Curtis’ National Guard unit was called to active duty at Ft. Polk, LA where his family joined him before returning to Weslaco. In 1959, Curtis began working for the B.D. Holt Co. where he worked for 32 years. Curtis was always active in the children’s activities which included youth football, Little League Baseball
