WRITERS
“Writing an article about honeymooners and the current trends they’re following was supposed to be fun and carefree. And it was, mostly. But listening to John Spellmann of Ascot Travel in Seguin detail the posh vacations, Caribbean getaways and domestic excursions was almost too much to handle for a writer such as myself who, like so many, hasn’t been on a real vacation in a while amid the coronavirus pandemic. However, Spellmann provided good ideas of future trips whenever restrictions are lifted and travel becomes safer again. Hope newlyweds and betrothed couples are similarly inspired to help plan their post-nuptial escapes.” – Dalondo Moultrie “I’ve been photographing weddings since I worked at an H-E-B photo lab in college. From forgotten rings to drunken bridal party members, I’ve seen pretty much everything that can go wrong on a wedding day. I’ve also seen a lot go right, and had the honor of capturing some truly beautiful events. My stories this issue lean into my years of experience working in and around weddings, and I hope that I convinced at least a few brides that they can still look glamorous on their big day while staying true to themselves and going easy on their wallets.” – Lizz Daniels

I’ve watched her business bloom as she has made Reiley and Rose a household name in this region of floral designers. I needed the 411 on hot flower trends, so naturally she was the first person I turned to. The insight she gave me was what every modern bride wants to know, and I’m grateful for her knowledge and friendship that made this article possible.” – Katy O’Bryan

hey say every trend begins in New York. Well, at least flower trends do, Megan Reiley, owner of Reiley and Rose, said. Big city trends, along with social media influence, have expanded modern brides’ ideas of what a wedding in 2021 looks like. The influence has shined a light on new types of floral additions. Pampas grass, dried palms, bleached flowers and dried florals are becoming increasingly popular, with most weddings incorporating one or two pieces for a rustic look. “They are real flowers that have been dried or soaked in bleach. They give a really cool texture, which I think a lot of girls are going for something different,” Reiley said. Weddings that incorporate mixed materials in their vase choices are popping up, with terra-cotta pots, cement pieces and uniquely-colored glassware making their way into more designs. With all-in-one venues gaining popularity over the traditional church and reception hall, Reiley sees brides breaking the bounds of creativity in their use of architecture to make the special day feel like their own. “You can only do so much with a venue before you start repeating yourself, so a lot of girls have started to bring in some kinds of structure,” she said. “They have something hanging

weddings have grown recently, one of Reiley’s favorite pieces was a creative pocket floral, designed to replace a boutonniere and fit inside a jacket pocket. Dogs are also getting the spotlight and a full place in some weddings, and dog collar wreaths are great ways to include cute canines in the special day. More specific to Reiley and Rose, Reiley said the brides who intrigue her the most are the ones who hand creativity to the designer, which they see more and more as creative designs become more popular. “I love a person that knows what they want, but we love the creative freedom,” she said. “Our ideal client knows our work and allows us to give them something original. That’s what sparks joy in my creative heart. We love those clients who are willing to just hand it over.”

ery, Reiley says that is not exactly the case as the labor intensive designs are not very cost-efficient. If a bride’s dream is to have a long line of flowers in a table runner form, she suggests having a laid design instead. “It’s a little more loose and a little more whimsical,” she said. “It’s not that lush fullness but a lot of times it’s just hand-laying the greenery on the table. It goes a lot faster and you really can’t tell the difference.” Even then, Reiley tells her clients that at least with her company, the price of a faux-garland is equal to a couple of nice centerpieces with flowers for similar cost. “I feel flowers are more of a statement than just greenery,” she said. Other things on the trend radar? Pocket and collar florals; one for adults, the other for a furry friend. As non-traditional couples and

over the head table or have a chandelier or hanging floral boxes. Things like that to give it a different element so that it’s a different space than it was before.” Pieces resembling art installations are a hot-ask and Reiley is spending a lot of time on ladders because of it. “Depending on the venue you have, they’re going to have either a table, windows, an arch, fireplaces, mantle, backdrop or something, and we’re dressing those pieces up,” she said. “So if we have a bride that tells us ‘I want greenery everywhere,’ well, ok. We hang it from the rafters, we’re going to hang it from here or there.” On the flip side, there is a trend that Reiley needs to debunk for brides when planning to use florals for a wedding: garland. While most people expect garland to be inexpensive from cheap green-

PROTECT YOURSELF Always check local regulations before planning or attending an event. Brief guests about precautions before the event starts; during the event, remind guests of these precautions and ensure they are followed. Choose outdoor venues over indoor spaces – if indoors, ensure the area is well-ventilated. Provide all necessary supplies – hand hygiene stations, hand sanitizer or soap and water, tissues, closed-lid bins, distance markers, masks. Stay at home if you are feeling unwell. Maintain at least 1 meter distance from others, and wear a mask if you cannot guarantee this distance. Cover a sneeze or cough with a tissue or bent elbow, and immediately dispose of tissue in a closed-lid bin. Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth. DIY Bouquet

reating your own wedding bouquets using wholesale and in-season flowers can be a huge relief on your wallet. But, that’s not the only way you can save some serious cash and still get the perfect bouquet for your special day. Here are some tips to help you with the DIY process, and most importantly, tell you how you can save money along the way.
In-season flowers There are specific times of the year when certain flowers are in-season. There are also year-round flowers, including roses, garden roses, carnations, hydrangeas, and orchids, that can add a unique beauty to a simple bouquet. In-season flowers are cheaper and readily available at most florists.
Statement Blooms Fill Space Statement blooms like garden roses and hydrangeas take up a larger volume of space in arrangements, which means you don’t need as many to create a big impression. These blooms are also known as focal flowers that are placed to draw attention.
Buy in Bulk Buying in bulk means you may have to limit how many different types of flowers you use in your design, but you can still make a big impact with just one or two focal flowers. If you decide to buy in bulk a wide variety 14 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
of flowers for your bouquet, you can use the extras in other areas, like table centerpieces and corsages.
GO GREEN You can create a lush bouquet using greenery and foliage exclusively. Silver dollar eucalyptus, parvafolia, and leather leaf greenery are just a few to look into. Though typically inexpensive, the price of some greenery may be just as much as if you were buying flowers.
DIY - SIMPLE & EASY Creating your bouquet may look intimidating, but it is actually quite simple and easy to make! The equipment that you will need includes: Shears or Scissors String Floral tape Ribbon - First, remove any extra leaves along the stems of the flowers. Pruning everything in advance will make things easier once you start building. - Next, choose a focal flower. This will be the center of attention within your bouquet. - Add the next flower at an angle facing outward, but it should remain so that the bloom is at the same height as that of your focal flower.
Every time you add a flower, rotate the bouquet rightward a quarter turn to position the bouquet ready for the next flower to be added diagonally. - Once you’ve got the bulk of your bouquet ready, you can insert some filler flowers between the flowers you already have. These are usually the smaller, green flowers which give a natural look to the bouquet. Make sure you’re holding the steams tightly so they don’t shift around too much. - Tie a tight knot at the highest point of the stem that you possibly can. This will keep all of your flowers held together tightly and looking beautiful and symmetrical. Cut off any excess string. - Cut the bottom of the stems so they are even, about two hands length from the string. - Wrap the stems with floral tape from top downward. This will ensure that the flowers are firmly held in place until, and on, the big day. - Last, wrap with ribbon. Place the shiny side of the ribbon facing the stems so that the matte side is visible, starting from the top of the flowers moving downward on the steams. (Leave approximately 16 inches spare at the top to tie a knot and add a bow.) From the bottom cross over the ribbon with shiny side up and wrap upward around the stems. Tie a knot to hold it all together.

Honeymoon Travel
Expert advice on planning the perfect romantic getaway Story by Da l ondo Moult r ie
O
ne thing the coronavirus pandemic can never stop is love.
As relationships flourish, inevitably many lead to the altar and, ultimately, the honeymoon after. This has couples navigating a COVID-19 society while planning their post-nuptial excursions. When mapping out honeymoon plans, the soonto-be husband and wife would do themselves a favor by enlisting the help of a certified professional, said John Spellmann, owner of Ascot Travel, a travel agency with offices in Seguin, New Braunfels and San Marcos.
Most hotels and cruises will do something special for you if they know it’s your honeymoon – whether that’s upgrading you, or give you something special like flowers, a bottle of champagne or chocolates in the room on your arrival. It’s an easy way to feel special and extra cared for on your trip, so don’t be afraid to advertise your status!
“Just make sure you work with an experienced travel advisor and someone that’s going to be able to keep you up to date on the travel restrictions,” he said. Some states in the U.S. have instituted travel restrictions on visitors from other areas. People are required to present negative COVID test results when traveling to certain places, Spellmann said. Other places that in the past have been hot spots for honeymooners allow guests, but aren’t offering the same experiences as in previous years, he said. “You can still travel to California, but they’ve restricted which busi-
“Just make sure you work with an experienced travel advisor and someone that’s going to be able to keep you up to date on the travel restrictions.” nesses can be open,” Spellmann said. “They travel there but there’s nothing to do once they get there. We have a lot of people calling us because they want to travel but they don’t know what all they can do once they get someplace. We have to help them navigate that.” Because of the restrictions, many
newlyweds who desire more tropical getaways, but want to remain stateside are steered toward Florida. Beaches have been open and welcoming to guests for some time, the Walt Disney World resorts and parks are operational and the weather is nice. Plus, Florida has no travel restrictions barring visitors.
Las Vegas is also a popular destination in recent months. However, places with cooler climates like Jackson Hole, Wyoming, have also gotten a lot of interest, Spellmann said. “Also Colorado,” he said. “Some people have gone to some of the different ski resorts and stuff even when it was summertime. They get away from the heat and go up there.” Of course, traveling abroad is a dream come true for many brides and grooms. Having a capable travel agent can help prevent those dreams from becoming nightmares, Spellmann said. Passport situations can be where the nightmare begins.
18 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
Processing of passports currently is an ordeal due to the pandemic, he said. Folks planning to leave the country should be sure well ahead of time that their passports are up to date. Once the travel documents are secured, many honeymoon couples are whisking off to places like Cancun, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic, Spellmann said. Places like Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic and Mexico currently do not require negative COVID test proof for entry and stay, he said. However, things with the pandemic have changed at the drop of a hat.
For that reason, Spellmann suggests to all of his clients to purchase travel insurance. Anything can happen and taking on the extra expense can mean the difference between having a dream vacation canceled with no refund to possibly just putting it off until a later date. “You can book your honeymoon everywhere and a resort that might be open when you book it for now … because of COVID or something might end up closing and you might have to move to a different one,” Spellmann said. “There’s so much stuff with COVID going on, you have to prepare to be flexible and have
As you make preparations for your honeymoon travel, remember to take time to plan out what you need to pack. It’s a good idea to research your specific destination so you can plan for varying requirements for the time of year in which you are traveling; look out specifically for seasonal rains or dramatic changes in temperature; and also local customs.

insurance in case you or your fiancé get sick.” Extravagant and modest vacation planning has dipped in recent months with the arrival of the virus, he said. Hiring a trained professional is important to help travelers avoid pitfalls that could ruin a wedding/ honeymoon, Spellmann said. There is help available, but people just need to make sure to partake in that assistance. “The biggest thing is just make sure you’re working with someone that’s experienced that can help you foresee all of these possible issues,” Spellmann said.

Additionally, find out what amenities are provided, like a hair dryer or maybe even a laundry service so you can pack less. nce upon a time, brides-to-be dreamed of brilliant fairytale-style dresses designed to transform s girl into a picture-perfect princess, if just for one day. In the '80s, this meant puffy sleeves and lace, while the '90s brought on the sparkle and reinvented formal gowns by introducing the halter neckline. Ask women what their dream dresses look like today, and answers will vary broadly. Many still find themselves drawn toward the traditional white dress, but these can be heavy and, if detailed, expensive. According to bridal resource theknot.com, the average wedding dress cost in 2019 was $1,600.

FOR THE GROOM Consider ditching a stuffy old-tux in favor of a modern slimfit suit to bid farewell to bachelor life. While buying a suit may be more expensive on the upfront cost, the investment is more monetarily savvy than renting. A suit also has the added benefit of being a great way to suprise your spouse for a night on the town because every woman loves her man in a well-fitted suit and tie.

Not every bride wants to wear a traditional dress, which is why the “little white dress” can elevate an otherwise simple look to glamour status. Yesenia wears a second-hand lace dress originally from Forever 21 with a trendy faux succulent bouquet. Paired with her favorite Doc Martens and laced using silk ribbon for the traditional “something blue,” this is a look that is perfect for a modern bride wanting to showcase her personality.

An underutilized dress acquisition method is wearing a family dress –– typically from the bride’s mother or grandmother. This practice was once commonplace but has become rarer as not all women have the same body as their mother, and even fewer have the same fashion sense. The idea of reusing a dress from a by-gone era might bring to mind images of glossy taffeta and full-face veils but, in reality, vintage is in style more than ever, making this the perfect year to head into the future by looking to the past. Regardless of the approach taken to dress shopping, Guadalupe County has options for most. There are countless secondhand stores, boutiques, tailors and seamstresses ready to help brides (and their bridal party) get the fit just right, whether walking down the Texas Wedding & Event Floral Designer aisle in an outdoor ceremony or saying /reileyandrose @reileyandrose www.reileyandrose.com megan@reileyandrose.com “I do” from behind a computer desk.

Emily Ricky Emily & & Ricky
lmost a year ago, we decided it was time to take the next step. We put a deposit down to secure our future home. We started picking out the design, choosing the lights, and watching the process on our first home being built. Ricky is a Seguin Police Officer and I am a fulltime college student at Texas State University. Finally, we received a call that our house was ready to close and that’s when Ricky knew it was time. Ricky told me he was going over to my parents house to help them move some furniture around but little did I know, he was on his way to ask for my father’s permission. On Nov. 2, 2020, my father gave Ricky his blessing to ask for my hand in marriage. Ricky was a little trickster though and any time we talked about marriage, he would tell me that we should just wait and focus on the house. But as you all know, he had a different plan up his sleeve. Our closing date was set for Nov. 19! Ricky’s plan was to propose the day of the house signing because he knew our family would be present. Then we got a call that the paperwork was delayed and we had to move to another day. Ricky’s schedule pushed the signing to Nov. 30, which seemed like forever away. We got up that day, loaded our U-Haul and headed to San Marcos to meet with the title company. Our appointment was set for 12 p.m. Shortly before noon, we receive a call to wait and come at 2 p.m. We tried to not let the news dampen our mood and tried to make the best of the next two hours, until another call came. The title company
pushed us back until 4 pm. As you might have guessed, our moods were officially dampened. We were so excited to move into our home. Finally, it’s time for us to go in and get our paperwork signed. Whoo Hoo, we
before we walk in. Now I am definitely nervous. Ricky, being the trickster I told you about, is pretending like he is blindfolded with me. We walk in and my mom places me in position. She takes off my blindfold and before my

Little did I know, both of our families were at the house decorating for the proposal. We pull up to our home, everyone is cheering for us. He slips my beautiful engagement ring on my finger and I finally see everything around me. Balloons, rose petals and candles filled our living room with the words “Will you marry me?” Nov. 30 will always be one of the best days. We became homeowners and we are now engaged!

Amber Blaine Amber& & Blaine
went to Oahu, Hawaii, to go visit Blaine at his military station after over seven months apart. We are high-school sweethearts, temporarily doing long distance. To help get us through our time apart, we would always talk about our future and how it was necessary that we both take the time to build our careers so that we can live a comfortable and happy life. I remember when I arrived in Oahu, Blaine had this beautiful Lei to put around my neck. Not only that, but in the front seat he had a double cheeseburger and fries for me. All I could think about was how much I loved this guy. We went straight to his house from the airport and when we got home he had gifts galore on his bed. There was Louis Vuitton, Tiffany and so much more. I couldn’t believe
he had gotten all this for me. I almost pinched myself to make sure it was real; how did I manage to get so lucky? I went for the blue Tiffany bag first, I couldn’t help but think that maybe it was an engagement ring. Instead, it was perfume that I had been wanting for months. While I knew we had plenty of time to get engaged, I still wanted to get started on our forever. I began my two week quarantine right away. On Aug. 1, after a long and necessary two weeks, I was able to leave the house. Blaine had planned
photos at a beautiful lookout/beach. Blaine is not typically one to make plans, but I really didn’t think anything of it. He had spent so much money on my welcome gifts that I thought there was no way he would get me a ring as well. The drive to Eternity Beach is beautiful, one of my favorite roads in Hawaii. We get to the parking lot and start hiking down to the beach, which is a difficult task when you have a dress on. When we finally reach the bottom, I notice all of his friends have their phones out. I thought
for three of his friends and me to eat breakfast together and then take some
“huh, weird how have they not been here before?” It was such a popular spot, I couldn’t believe they hadn’t been there. Little did I know that their phones were out because Blaine was about to propose. Right away, he asked a friend to take our photo, I could tell Blaine was a little stiff. This was odd to me, but I agreed to take the photo. Following the picture, Blaine pulled out a blue Tiffany bag and, because it was not a ring box, I was thinking he had bought me a gift. I thought this was a weird spot for him to give me a present, but oh well. I stood there a little confused, and then out of the bag came a beautiful diamond ring. I was in shock and had immediate tears. I couldn’t believe Blaine had planned this all out and made this so special for us. It was at this moment that our forever together began. One of the best days of my life thus far.

e were in Tulum for my birthday four years ago, having an amazing time as expected. I had suspicions that Adrian would propose but after day two I began coming to the “realization” that it wasn’t going to happen. On day three he planned to go to a secluded beach with a whole spread of my favorite foods – we had a beautiful picnic on the beach with tons of food and champagne. We went to take pictures and he insisted that I was standing for the pictures. We were taking pictures and next thing I know he was on his knee proposing! He was crying so hard I have no clue what he said, then he dropped the ring-haha! I said yes!
“We get back to the rental car and he had locked the keys in the trunk. I was not worried about it because I was engaged!” We get back to the rental car and he had locked the keys in the trunk. I was not worried about it because I was
engaged! The roadside service took two hours to get there. In the meantime, we flagged down some people for help and they had nothing except alcohol – so we partied on the beach with our new friends from other countries who were also on vacation. What I didn’t know is that my new fiancé had a beautiful dinner at the hotel waiting.
The roadside service came. We drove back and had an AMAZING dinner on the balcony of our hotel. Adrian always says that he knew I was the woman for him because of how patient I was when he locked the keys in the car, and how I didn’t care a bit. Now we’ve been married for two years!

radition influences every wedding moment –– from the color, length, and style of the dress to whether or not the bride chooses to wear a veil –– everything is up for critique. The idea of wearing a veil to protect from the evil eye while being given away by your father figure to a man may seem outdated to modern brides, but fortunately, there are ways to honor tradition while keeping things fresh. If being given away isn’t for you, consider having your parents or other significant family members stand up on your behalf. Including family members in this way can help them feel included in the ceremony while also defying norms. As for the veil decision, brides should consider trying many different options to see if the look is for them. And remember, if it’s not, it doesn’t matter what others think –– it’s your day, so honor you and your partner’s identities first, but don’t forget to put a penny in one of your shoes for good luck!
A
n outdoor or church ceremony is one of the most significant decisions couples must make. Weather can influence the outdoors, and families may expect certain religious traditions to be fulfilled, such as Communion. Other less common rituals are common as well though some may be less well-known. Jumping the broom’s origin is a matter of some debate but regardless of where it came from, its symbolic nature remains a beautiful element to include. After exchanging vows, a broom is put on the ground for the bride and groom to leap over together. Jumping the broom provides an opportunity to either include a family heirloom broom or get crafty by making it from scratch. In Hispanic culture, el Lazo (wedding lasso) is looped around the couple, forming an infinity symbol around them. This beautiful representation of unity symbolizes everlasting love unity and is typically a string of flowers and rosary beads. The inclusion of el Lazo may be accompanied by wedding sponsors known as Los Padrinos, who play an essential role in the festivities. 36 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

T
he Grand March is a popular Texas tradition that many newlymarried couples choose to include in the wedding after-party. Much of south and central Texas was originally settled by Eastern European settlers from Poland and the Czech Republic. The Grand March likely traveled with them to North America and has been around ever since. The march can be set to any song, but “The Grand March” is typically something with a Polka beat, which helps get the dance part of the wedding reception going. It is a dance full of symbolic meaning meant to honor the trials and tribulations of matrimony, which ends by transitioning the couple into their first dance together. After the party is underway, the cake cutting takes place and may be accompanied by a groom’s cake. Those with German heritage may take their dessert game to the next level by including a cake that is 10 feet long and paraded into the ceremony by guests putting on a show of the behemoth “spitzwecken” not fitting in the room. As the guests dance around the room drinking beer, the cake finally enters the party, and everyone can get a taste. While many of these traditions carry across different cultures, they all have one thing in common –– they honor familial heritage while celebrating the family’s, and especially the couple’s, future through love.
