An INSIDE look from our
WRITERS
“Visiting with a group of women who shared a passion for teaching and a love of the outdoors was a treat. When these ladies get together to paddle out on the water in their kayaks, it is clear they have every bit of fun they can. They laugh, they joke, they connect and they enjoy each other’s company and the great outdoors. Their fun demeanor was inspiring and infectious. I look forward to the day I might be able to join them.” – Felicia Frazar “Recently, my wife (who is not outdoorsy at all) mentioned our family buying an RV and hitting the road to see more of the Hill Country and the country at large. So talking to avid outdoors people like Tonya Boyle and her husband Dane was eyeopening and refreshing. Still don’t think we’ll be purchasing that recreational vehicle any time soon but the Boyles sure did give us great things to consider.” – Dalondo Moultrie “It was a breath of fresh air getting to watch Gavin Caraway on the track at Creekside MX. It was clear he found passion for motocross and was a natural behind the handlebars as he soared through the air, nailing each of his landings. What was more fun, was watching as his inspired his younger brother and a friend to take up the sport.” – Felicia Frazar

hen I was a kid, all of my free time away from school and chores was spent outside. On the weekends, from the moment Saturday morning cartoons ended, until the sun went down, I’d explore the world. Aside from my family going on weekend camping trips as often as possible, we lived close to the river, which meant many days spent fishing and swimming. I participated in any outdoors activity I could – bike riding, roller skating, skateboarding, street hockey, kickball, climbing trees; the list goes on and on. Even my clumsiness couldn’t stop me from being outside. Even with crashed bikes, scraped knees, or a broken arm, you could still find me climbing another tree, kicking another ball, being an active loony child. Nothing compares to the feeling of sunshine on your face, wind whipping hair into a frizziness, or a healthy sweat from wildly running around in the summer heat. With a proven passion for the outdoors, I might still take some inspiration from the stories in this month’s issue; all focused around some fun things to do while enjoying what nature has to offer. It’s tough being inside all of the time, especially with a proclivity for the outdoors. Get motivated, find time to get some sunshine, and stay cool, Seguin.

Lockhart, Tx

I
stopped into Lockhart with intentions of measuring the energy of the town, briefly poking around, grabbing a photo-or-two, and delivering a few pleasant words to this very page regarding our near neighbor. What a fool I am for only planning a few hours of a visit. I was struck by Lockhart’s immediate quaintness, a word I’d otherwise consider cliche, if not for the absolute perfection in its application to this lovely area. Small (but sweet) storefronts that beckoned my entry and perusal, and a welcoming smile on the face of anyone I waved at like a madman. I looked up places of interest online to find myself instantly drawn to a flashy specialty candy store. The overgrown child in me saw the obscure candy, Japanese confectionery, rare soda, and knickknack toy oddities in the store’s Facebook photos, and I knew I’d have to visit. The kind of store you wouldn’t expect in a small town, but, at the same time, could only find in a small town; like Lockhart. The gem of gems, for my personal tastes.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s not only a lovely candy store with rarities hiding in Lockhart; there’s plenty to wander through, enjoy, and sample on a weekend outing. Antiques to fawn over, bars with wood floors, single artist galleries, and the traditional sites of memory. I leave these Googlings, trip plannings, and the adventurousness over sidewalks unwalked to you. Maybe none of these vibes apply to you, so let me entice you with four words before you turn the page: Barbecue Capital of Texas. I almost forgot having heard that descriptor of Lockhart, until I caught the scent of a handful of the incredible barbeque joints surrounding me. I won’t name any, I encourage you to come try them all. I made the mistake of somehow missing this inviting town, despite how close we are. I look forward to returning to Lockhart to flip some coins in my pocket for candy, explore the locations that call to me, and swap stories with our neighbors. If, for some reason, you can’t make the trip anytime soon: no worries. With any luck I’ll bring a few of their stories your way, until you’ve a chance to meet them yourselves.
Gone Camping COZY TRAVELING & THE GREAT OUTDOORS
story by DALONDO MOULTRIE
A
lready lovers of the great outdoors, a worldwide health emergency drove a Guadalupe County couple to explore nature in new, more mobile ways. Tonya Boyle and her husband of five years Dane ran around a lot outside and enjoyed their fun under the sun. However, an event nearly five years ago put a damper on the kind of fun they flew all over the United States to enjoy most often, Tonya said. “I used to be a marathoner,” she said. “We would go on what we call ‘race-cations.’ We would go anywhere we could to enjoy a race and get away. “I tore my achilles tendon and that put a stop to that.” Dane ran marathons alongside his wife. When her injury sidelined her and led to three surgeries in the last 4.5 years, running was out of the question for the couple. Marathons were never about posting the best time or finishing before anyone else but a way for the couple to commune with nature, Tonya said. The need to be outside didn’t end when she couldn’t run and the longing to get out increased when COVID-19 made its way to Texas and Guadalupe County, leading to closures of businesses and a general slowing across society. It also led to a big-ticket-item purchase for the Boyles and a new recreation, Tonya said. “When the pandemic hit, we used to travel everywhere and we would 12 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

fly and go places,” she said. “Whenever we couldn’t do that anymore, we bought a small travel trailer. We love to be outside and we love to hike and just enjoy outdoors.” Whereas transportation used to be jet airliners to destinations for fun, the Boyles now load up themselves and their corgie, Luna, and border collie/ Australian shepherd mix, Dodger, to hit the highways in a 17-foot Keystone Springdale travel trailer. The vehicle might be compact but it offers just enough space for the foursome to get to new places and traverse new terrain on hikes, walks and beach excursions, Tonya said. But cozy works because they’re seldom confined between the walls of the RV on their trips, she said. “That’s why we bought small, because it forces us to stay outside,” Tonya said. “We love to cook outside. We cook outside when we’re at home. We bought a little travel fire pit, and we use fire pits at home.” The Boyles try to take the travel trailer out every two or three weeks, about twice a month. They hit trails in the area going to places like Canyon Lake, San Marcos and Red Rock Canyon. Often the family goes for hikes but sometimes opt for more leisurely walks, Tonya said. Other times, they look for an ocean view. “We love the beach also, so we do that very often, at least once a month if we can, schedule allowing,” she said. “Even when I went to move my daughter to College Station, we took the travel trailer and camped there.”

Tonya and Dane aren’t the only family members that get a kick out of the RV adventures, Tonya said. Luna and Dodger let it be known that they love the road trips and the outdoor exposure. “I know that Luna loves the beach. She’ll be the first one to try to run to the beach when we get there,” she said. “They both like to be outside. If they could stay outside all day, they would. We have to call them to come in, just like kids. “All of our kids are grown and gone so that’s what’s left at home.” Home now is in the portion of New Braunfels in Guadalupe County, where the couple has lived since 2013, Tonya said. She was raised in Geronimo and went to school at Navarro.
For longer than 30 years, Tonya said, she has worked at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center, currently stationed in the lab there. Though not a doctor, she is apt to give a little medical advice, saying that being outdoors is great medicine. Getting outside and moving, enjoying fresh air will do any body good, Tonya said. Dane, she said, knows a little something and gives comparable guidance. “My husband has a master’s in exercise science and he will be the first to tell you that movement is the fountain of youth,” Tonya said. Getting out and about for that movement is the way the couple likes to stay young and stay happy.

KAYAKING making friends, finding Happiness, and filling the soul:

he sound of laughter was heard along the banks of the Guadalupe River as a group of women prepared to set out on their weekly kayaking voyage. At the Lake Placid public boat ramp under Interstate 10, six friends gathered to launch their vessels, something they’ve done for months as the pandemic carried on. “This is the combination of retirement and COVID,” said Felicia Durant. “It was the one way I could figure how to be around people but still be safe.” In the height of the lockdowns, fresh into retirement from teaching physical education at Jefferson Elementary, Durant looked to the outdoor activity as a way to connect socially. She put a call out on Facebook, and got some interest, most notably from former co-workers — almost all of whom have retired. Lori Murphy was among the first to take Durant up on the offer to paddle out. She had initially spent some time paddling with another group on Lake McQueeney, but that faded out, and Murphy was left looking for someone else to venture out with. “I had the kayak and wanted to go but didn’t know who to go with,” she said. “Felicia and I got to talking.” Before long, the group grew to include Laura Vrana, Ellen Mccarty, Diana Ball, Cindy Hernandez and Susan Richardson. “I love to kayak; I love to be outside,” Durant said. “This has just been fun, and it’s been months. It has kind of saved my sanity.” At one point, each of the women worked at — or in one case, still works at — Jefferson Elementary. And while they worked together, they didn’t get the opportunity to know each other until they began hitting the paddling trails. “We’ve all been around each other for almost 30 years,” Mccarty said. “We’ve really gotten to know each other out here.”
“The combination of being outside and being with them just fills your soul and makes me happy.”
GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 17
Murphy agreed, adding their time on the water has brought them closer together. “I think we bonded,” she said. Hernandez, who had retired before the pandemic, continued to work as a substitute until COVID-19 closed schools. She found she was able to reconnect better on the water. “When we started kayaking together, it was like being back with family again,” she said. “I had worked with all of them for so long. I may not be in a classroom with kids, but I’m still around the people I know and have become familiar with. This has been really good getting to know these ladies.” The calming water, pristine nature and all of the laughter were just what Vrana said she needed. “I enjoy being outside,” she said. “The combination of being outside and being with them just fills your soul and makes me happy.” Plus, it is good exercise, Mccarty said. “I need to be outside so I won’t be sitting inside reading,” she joked. On the cooler mornings, the group would gather for lunch and then head out. But as the weather starts warming up, they’ll launch first and then eat. Each found the passion for kayaking in various ways at different times in their lives. For Durant, it was with fellow outdoor enthusiast Pete Silvius. “One time and I was hooked,” she said. “I bought my first kayak, and somebody said, ‘oh, you can’t just have one.’ I didn’t believe them. I have five now.” Hernandez compared it to a shoe addiction, except they’re not just drawn to purchasing the gear, Durant said. “You’re not addicted to the stuff itself; you’re addicted to nature, being out there,” she said. “For me, I’m an active person. I have always been. I don’t do well inside. “I need to be outside. For me, I need that reason to get out there, and this is it.” Ball began her kayaking voyages about 10 years ago with her husband. “I find kayaking very peaceful,” she 18 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING

It’s a sport the 14-year-old recently found a passion for and has quickly learned how to compete in. “He’s always rode something — a four-wheeler or a dirt bike — never on a track,” mother Kera Caraway said. “He came out here one time and entered in a race to see where he went. He won first place in every division, and that’s where we started. We race every weekend just about.” Gavin rode dirt bikes often at a friend’s house. It wasn’t until his friend took him to Creekside that Gavin got a taste for competition. “I came out here and rode his bike,” he said, adding that was it. He was hooked. Gavin split the cost of his first bike — a 65 cc — with his parents, Bubba and Kera — and quickly upgraded to the KX 85, which his parents bought for him in September, just after his 14th birthday. “I’ve been doing this about seven months,” he said. The front of his bike sports Gavin 251 — his competition racing number — which carries a special meaning. Taking notes from a fellow racer, Gavin decided to honor his family in his number selection. Two is for his parents, Bubba and Kera; five is the number of children in the family — Gracen, Gavin, Adi, Savanna and Zander — and one for his grandmother, Mimi.

avin Caraway revs up the engine on his 2019 Kawasaki KX 85 dirt bike and jets out onto the track at Creekside MX. He takes a warmup lap and then throttles it, leaning into turns, jumping tabletops and rolling down step downs as fast as he can at the motocross track just outside of New Berlin.
Soaring through the air on the bike and driving at high rates of speed are highlights of the races, Gavin said. But there’s more to it. “Really though, when we go to races, that’s my favorite time, especially in the mornings before racing because of the community,” he said. “Like this place here, it is what got me started. Everyone was so nice here.” The Caraways recently saw firsthand how the community steps up. With Bubba unable to attend a recent moto in Floresville, other families assisted Gavin and Kera prepping the bike between races.
“The dads came together and helped Gavin do all of the work he needed like change the spark plugs, drain the tank,” she said. “It is just a community, and they all come tighter. Out here, it is like family. Perfect strangers come together and help out. They help your kids like their own.” The only time nerves get the better of Gavin is when he’s at the starting gate. “You worry about stalling; that is the worst feeling,” he said. “Your bike will get stuck in those gates, and you just lost the race. Behind
the gates and once you’re out, it’s just like riding normal; well, for me at least.” Most racers shoot for holeshot — the first rider out of the gate — a title Gavin has earned often during his competitions. “We’re really proud to see how far he has come and what he has achieved in just a short time,” Kera said. Bubba and Kera enjoy watching their son find something he is passionate about and help him embrace it. “It is going to keep them busy and keep them from doing other GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING ~ SEGUIN 21

things,” Kera said, admitting that the possibility of him wrecking scares her. “But the achievements and seeing him succeed and doing what he loves, we love seeing that and supporting it.” Gavin typically competes against other racers between the ages of 9 to 15 in the 85/150 open classes and, the type of track determines how many laps they take. As Gavin practices on his own under the watchful eyes of both his parents, he gets a little professional assistance from supercross racer Kyle Swanson. Gavin admits he’s learned a lot from his dad, who dove into the motocross world with his son. Motocross is becoming a family affair. “My dad got himself a bike just from riding mine, and mom is getting a bike, too,” Gavin said. He also began sharing his passion with his friend and little brother, who follows in his footsteps and is practicing riding on a four-wheeler. He will soon have a dirt bike of his own. “He wants to do everything Gavin does,” Kera said. “He tries to follow. It is a good thing for Gavin to remember. He has to keep in mind that he is the role model for Zander. Whatever he does, Zander is going to follow.” Gavin also has to keep his grades up and boasts holding As and Bs in all of his classes to keep his bike on the competition track. It is a requirement for some sponsorships, but primarily for his parents. The 14-year-old said he is more than happy to oblige. His goal is to one day qualify for the MX Sports Amateur Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn’s. “It is like MLB or NFL; that’s where it is at, that is where you want to be,” he said. “It is a long process to get there. It takes years and experience riding, dedication, all of it to get there. There are sponsorships just waiting for you at the finish line.” But for now, Gavin plans to keep revving up his engine and enjoying the Texas-based races.

ollowing decades of working for himself in architecture and construction, a Guadalupe County resident wanted something more. After noticing his children aging and growing while he spent more and more time working, Benito M. “Benno” Loera made a decision that changed the course of his life and led to a lucrative new business he could mostly do at home. “We were on call 24/7 because it was a big commercial job. Our kids were getting ready to go into high school and some getting ready for college,” Loera said. “I was tired of being on 24-hour call. We decided to sell all our tools and equipment and get out of the building business.” The next move came to Loera by happenstance and led to his current venture creating high-end custom furniture operating as South Texas Mesquite and Cedar Treasures. Much of the company’s in-demand furniture is inlaid with turquoise and other gemstones for a signature look that further highlights the custom carvings. “I always loved woodworking so I decided ‘hey, why don’t we start this business?’ We built a shop, a small one, and started doing it here,” Loera said of his home woodworking studio. “I started going to these little art fairs. As we became more popular with people, I said maybe this could work.” Shortly after starting his new

venture, Loera began carving things like boxes and chests with turquoise inlays. He eventually sold a wooden box at a craft fair. The woman who bought it told her friends and the next day his booth at the event was packed with folks looking for wood creations with inlays. “That started what we were doing, our own little trademark,” Loera said. “To this day, we still use about 26 semiprecious stones. … Turquoise became our trademark. We started that in 1997.” All of the techniques he uses to craft items like tables, chairs, pool tables, bars, barstools and more he learned on his own. He would pick up magazines and books to look at some techniques but fine tuned his style by trial and error, Loera said. “Everything we did was self taught, self developed,” he said. “We didn’t go and copy anybody else. We didn’t copy
anything. We just did what we felt.” Over the decades, doing what he felt turned into what many people adore and some cherish. He began building larger pieces, furniture and more functional items, Loera said. From there, things really started to take off. He began showing pieces at stock shows and rodeos and gained more notice. Demand increased for even larger pieces. “One year, somebody said, ‘Hey, can you build me a pool table,’” Loera said. “This was 2004. I said yeah and I built a pool table. It was a mesquite, single-pedestal pool table.” Due to the intricacy and amount of work involved in crafting the table, he priced it at a pretty penny, Loera said. He thought the big sticker price would discourage other buyers from requesting such a large, ornate piece, but boy
was he wrong. “I didn’t want to pursue building pool tables,” Loera said. “It was just too expensive for the normal guy, $26,500 for a pool table.” He attended a festival that same year in Fredericksburg and had a photo of the mesquite pool table on display. The photo alone drew raves and he received requests for similar billiards tables along with wooden bars, chairs, regular tables and much more, Loera said. He’s built pool tables with the Texas Longhorns insignia and other eye-catching designs to the delight of clients from many different walks of life. Inspiration sometimes just comes to him, Loera said. “In my designing of things, I’ve always had this kick of trying to find something different,” he said. “Basically, you let the wood tell you what it is. Both my sons have the same knack.
“Basically, you let the wood tell you what it is. Both my sons have the same knack. They look at a piece of wood and say that’s a table, that’s a pool table, that’s a chair or whatever it is.” 28 SEGUIN ~ GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING
They look at a piece of wood and say that’s a table, that’s a pool table, that’s a chair or whatever it is.” Loera said he mills and dries the wood himself. Creating the pieces includes a long, detailed process from the ground up, he said. While it’s a lot of work, he gets to do it from home, be his own boss, hire young people in need and willing to learn, and make customers happy with his artistry, Loera said. The response he gets from some of his clients is rewarding, he said. “I think I still like to do the single pedestal pool tables,” Loera said. “Those are the most striking pieces and the pieces that when people look at them in pictures and then you take them their pool tables, they’re, like, ‘Oh my God, it’s better than what you showed me in the picture.’ They go on and on. “That’s for me the best compliment.”
