Dominate Devin
When you look at Devin Matthews, you will see a a smaller kid who takes captain of the team on offense and special teams very seriously. The 5-foot 8-inch, 180 pound wideout is one of the most dominate wide receiv ers in the state of Texas and has only played two seasons. In his junior year campaign, Matthews was the lead horse on offense and special teams. He had 58 catches for 1,183 yards and 11 total touchdowns. He also had an impact in the running game with nine carries for 34 yards. He is very explosive on both kick and punt return with 15 kick off returns for 245 yards and four punt return for 30 yards. Head coach of the Matadors, Craig Dailey, said Matthews is a very versatile player for us who can get the ball to in any position and expect him to score a touchdown.

Off of the football field, Matthews plays two other sports for Seguin. He is a starter on the basketball team and runs track, Dailey said.
“He is a great all-around kid,” he said.

Smithson Valley Rangers
The Rangers are another team dropping down from 6A, but they have found success against the bigger schools. They ended last season 9-3 overall and 5-2 in district tied New Braunfels for second in the district. Luckily, the Rang ers won the tie breaker with a 41-24 win over New Braunfels in the regu lar season. Smithson Valleys season ended with a second round playoff loss to Bowie by a score of 28-21. Look for them to make an immediate impact in the 5A district.
Mats primed for success
In his second year as the Matadors head coach, Craig Dailey feels like he has started something great and knows he has to grow off of it. Last year was a good foundation for the Matadors, Dailey said. “We were able to get a whole offsea son in and we were able to participate in spring football,” he said. “This season we will have our whole offensive and defen sive packages.”Lastyearthe Matadors weren’t able to put everything in that they wanted to on both sides of the ball because of how late the coaching staff got there, Dailey“Yearsaid.two you always hope is better than year one with the knowledge the kids have of our system offensively and defensively,” he said. This year the Matadors need to be more disciplined and they need to get the guys ready to play in big moments, Dailey“Offensivelysaid. we want to be as balanced as we can; we try to get our players the ball in one-on-one match ups,” he said. “Defense, we want to elim inate big plays and we want to make teams have long drives down the field.”
The Brahmas are coming off a disap pointing season with not being able to come away with a win in 6A. A combi nation of a hard district and a string of disappointing seasons led the Brahmas to a 0-10 overall record and a 0-8 record in district. The shift to a 5A district makes them more competitive with the experience they bring from 6A.
There are some old faces leaving and new faces arriving from 6A in the 5A-1 District 12 schedule. New arrivals include Boerne-Champion, Hays, San Antonio MacArthur, Smithson Valley and the San Antonio Wagner.

Build off of Success
The Hawks are a team who strug gled in 6A but have experience with the bigger teams in the state and are not to be taken lightly. They finished last year 3-7 overall and 2-5 in district. Good enough for seventh place in front of the winless Austin Maroons. Unfortu nately, the Hawks missed the playoffs in 6A and are looking forward to having a clean slate in 5A.
The Chargers had a success ful season last year in 5A-2 finishing the season 9-3 overall and 4-1 in the district. This landed them at second in their district behind undefeated Alamo Heights. Their losses came to El Campo early in the season, Alamo Heights in a nail bitter loss of 21-17, and a second round playoff loss to Liberty Hill 51-14.

“Our plan as a coaching staff is to put our players in the best situation to be successful and to be competitive in district each week,” he said. “We have a coaching staff here who cares out the kids,” he said. “We are trying to make our kids the best players and young men they can be.” ��

The Thunderbirds are the last team who are new to the district and come from 6A. They were in the same district as the Smithson Valley Rangers in which they finished 6th. The Thunderbirds finished last season 4-6 overall and 2-5 in district, which was not good enough to make the playoffs. Wagner is looking to come down to 5A and make an immediate impact and avenge a blowout loss to Smithson Valley. Returning Players on Both Sides This season, Dailey said they are fortunate to have a good amount of starters returning on both sides of the ball. On offense alone, the Matadors are returning wideout Devin Matthews, running back John’Avahn Jackson and tight end Jackson Pond. Jackson is returning as a junior and looking to build off of his impres sive sophomore campaign. In the 2021 season, Jackson had 195 carries for 1118 yards and nine touchdowns. Anytime you can get 1,000 yard rusher before being an upperclassman you take that as a bonus. Pond is also returning as a junior and is working on his hands for this upcoming season, Dailey said. “Jackson is a great run blocker for our team,” he said. “This offseason you can tell he has being working on his catchingPond’sability.”2021 season totals were seven games played with 13 receptions for 126Onyards.defense, the Matadors are returning outside linebacker Hayden Ross, defensive end Jakob McLeod and free safety Donovan Cray. Ross is a returning senior who, with McLeod, was the anchor of the outside run defense. Ross had a spectac ular junior season with 36 total tackles, six tackles for loss, three sacks and two forced fumbles. He was everywhere for the Matadors Alongsidedefense.Ross,senior McLeod was also a huge help in that Matador defense. In the 2021 season, he racked up 37 total tackles, five tackles for loss, three and a half sacks, one pass deflected and one fumble recovery. Probably the most impactful player for their defense is junior safety Donovan Cray. Cray had a monster sophomore season with 57 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack and four passes deflected.

No player in Navarro’s half century of football has ever made an impact in the play offs like halfback Antwoin Mebane made last season.

One week later, Mebane ran for less — just 86 yard — against Sinton. But did he ever make them count. In overtime, Mebane scored the touch down to bring the Panthers to within a point. Then, when his coaches elected to go for two, he got the call and worked his way into the end zone for the score and the win. It was a run worth watching a few dozen times if you are a Panthers fan. But it was in a losing effort against Cuero the next week that Mebane really showed what he can do. In that game he ran for 251 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries. Though Cuero pulled the game out with a late score, Mebane must have had their defensive coaches throwing clipboards because of their inability to slow him down.

Still, he gained only 204 yards total in the regular season, which is less than he would have in one game againstButCuero.Blount often talks about want ing his team being at its best in the playoffs and Mebane did his part to give him what he wanted. With Mebane now ready to play the full season with the Panthers, Blount sees even better things ahead for him.“Antwoin didn’t slow down in his work after the season was done,” Blount said. “I don’t know that he missed a single summer workout and is doing a phenomenal job preparing for this year. As a runner he’s got great vision, big powerful legs that he keeps moving so he’s hard to bring down on first contact, and he’s got a burst to go. As he has more time to get a feel for our offense and understanding how the blocks work, he’ll get better and help the team get better.”
If Navarro Panthers’ fans seem a little giddy these days, there is good reason why.
Navarro is all poised to pull stops and shine against caliber teams in 4A-II-13. of nowhere. Navarro head coach Rod Blount kept Mebane on the junior varsity until district play. He knew Mebane was special but wanted to give his sophomore needed experience and carries at the sub varsity level before putting him in the spotlight. Even in district play, Mebane saw little time. His one carry — a 19-yard run — in the Panthers’ loss to Wimberley did catch some atten tion on a night when Navarro’s offense struggled mightily.
“We would always prefer to be the team that sneaks up on people but that’s not going to happen this year,”

THE SQUAD
Even for a program as consistently successful as Navarro’s, the coming season looks like it could be special.
One reason for that is who is coming back. The Panthers return seven starters on defense, all of whom were first or second team all-district in 2021.
Offensively, their always potent Slot-T running game gets three rushers back who combined for 1,756 yards and 25 touchdowns last year. But some of that optimism may derive from who is not coming back. Cuero, the team that edged them from the playoffs last December, has moved to another region. Their rivals from Wimberley lost nine starters off their 2021 defense and their starting quarter back, who transferred to a new school. And Sinton, whom the Panthers beat by a whisker in the third-round last season, lost their main two offensive weapons to graduation.Soafterfour years of getting stopped in the regional finals, is Navarro the favorite to finally break out and win their region this year? Head coach Rod Blount does not mind if you say that they are.

The Panthers have a strong fresh man class and it is likely some will play on varsity this year to help with that depth, Blount said. Navarro will play in a district that has changed a little from last season.
Wimberley, Manor New Tech, and Austin Achieve remain. San Antonio YMLA is gone and replaced by Lago Vista and BlountJarrell.believes it is a much stronger district now and can help his team get ready for the playoffs.
Bryce Nall, who saw limited action as the backup last year, and Colton Schuelke, who led the junior varsity team in 2021, will both see action under center. Blount said his main concern is team“Wedepth.probably have some of the best talent that we’ve seen but we’re not nearly as deep as we have been,” he said.
“Lago Vista went to the state semifi nals in 3A, Division 1 last year,” he said. “They’re bringing back a lot of kids in the skill positions and that’s scary with the way they run their offense. Jarrell was down last year but they have a lot of talent and a coach who has done great things everywhere he has been. I think they’ll be a dark horse in the district and possibly the region.”
18 SEGUIN GUADALUPE COUNTY LIVING said Blount, who has led the Panthers to a 44-10 record since coming to the school in 2018. “It is good to be in the conversation when people talk about this region. We have a solid core of players coming back and the kids have been working really hard. But it’s not going to be a walk in the park. Wimberley and Sinton still have a good group of players and there are other solid teams in this region.” Blount believes the strength of the team is its defense. All-district lineback ers Hayden Tolliver and Case Monroe return along with all-district defensive backs Diego Chapa and Ian Palmer. Tolliver led the team last season with 99 tackles and six sacks and is the preseason pick by Texas Football Maga zine as Defensive MVP for District 13-4A-II.“When he was still a freshman, a senior told me ‘Coach, no one hits like Tolliver,’” Blount said. “He brings it when he makes contact and the running backs feel it. But he is also a student of the game who you know will do all the little things right. He’s a quiet guy but the other players look to him and try to do what he Navarrodoes.”haslong been known for its running backs and this could become one of their best groups. As a sopho more, halfback Antwoin Mebane rolled up 624 yards combined in the Panthers’ four playoff games. He will be the focus of opposing defenses. They also return their second leading rusher (846 yards, 10 TDs) from last season, tailback Colton Chambers, and fullback Diego Chapa (482 yards, six TDs in “All2021).those guys believe in each other and play for each other,” Blount said. “They know that as the others get better, it will open things up for each of them as well.”The offensive line returns some expe rience with Mack Berry — a first team all-district selection — along with Paxton Santone and Owen Gonzales. There will be some holes to fill from last year but Blount said all the lineman “have a motor and will drive and finish blocks.” Navarro will also have to find a new starting quarterback for the first time in three years.
The Panthers will also face a challeng ing non-district schedule with road games against Navasota, Cuero, and La Vernia and home games against Smithville and Giddings. All are familiar to Navarro, however, as they have played each at least once in the past two seasons. ��
“We’ll have to play some of our linemen both ways and that’s not something I like us to do.”

Dominic Castellanos – Wide Receiver/ Defensive Back
On the field, Dominic Castel lanos may not look like the biggest or flashiest player, but when it comes to football he is becom ing one of the best two-way players in the state. At 5-foot 9-inches 150 pounds, Castellanos is a leader on both offense and defense. Anyone can see he is dominant, but he has the stats to prove it. In 2021 as a junior, Castella nos racked up 37 catches for 691 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns. On the ground, he carried the ball 19 times for 152 yards and two touchdowns, and that’s just on offense. On defense he tallied 49 total tackles six tackles for loss three interceptions, four fumble recov eries with one returned for a touchdown and nine deflected passes. Castellanos also returns kicks for the Bulldogs, tallying nine returns for 226 yards and two punt returns for 24 yards last Anywhereseason.he is on the field, he will make an immediate impact with his explo siveness and prowess for the football. In the second half of the Bulldogs last play off game against Llano, Castellanos was responsible for a receiving touchdown, an onside kick recovery and another receiv ing touchdown for the Bulldogs.

Stunning Seniors Returning This season, the Bulldogs return some important pieces on offense and defense. Offensively, they return seniors to key positions like quarterback Dillion Sanchez, running back Aidan Rios and wide receiver — defensive back Domi nic Castellanos.Sanchezwas a starter for a couple of games last season and recorded 35 completions for 532 yards, six passing touchdowns and four interceptions. Being a duel-threat, his legs are a big part of his game. Last year he had 32 carries for 180 yards and three rushing touchdowns.Sanchezhas intangibles that are hard to explain, Miller said.
Marion football is gearing up for another season and Head Coach Ryne Miller is excited for the new season and his players. Heading into his fifth year with his coaching staff, Miller is look ing to build off his success from the 7-3 campaign last year.

Overall, the Bulldogs have a great group of kids for this season, Miller said. “All of these guys have been with us since freshman year,” he said. “They know our offense, defense and our verbiage very well.”
The Bulldog way is to always be the most mentally and physically tough football team, Miller said.
Bulldogs, who return with seniors and veteran coaching staff, have high goals for newly aligned District 13-3A and beyond.
“We may not always be the stron gest or the fastest on the field, but nobody is going to out work us when it comes to work ethic,” he said. “That’s the Marion, Texas way.”
The Bulldogs will have a very strong and vocal senior class, Miller said. “We have a lot of playmakers on offense and defense,” he said. “We are excited as a coaching staff to see what they do their senior year.” Coming into his fifth season, Miller has high praises for the individuality of his coaching staff. “We got a great coaching staff here,” he said. “These guys take a lot of pride in what they do — they come ready to go every single day and there is never a dull moment. The best part about them is they are all great role models for these kids,” he said.

“He probably has one of the best arms I have ever seen,” he said “His IQ for football is very high— he is just over all fun to watch.” Rios is coming off a good junior year campaign in which he showed promise not only in the run game but also the passing game. In 2021, Rios had 205 carries for 1,225 yards and 15 rush ing touchdowns. On the receiving end, he had only eight receptions he turned into 118 yards. On defense for the Bulldogs, Kross Kelso will have every opportunity to be one of the best run stoppers in the state. In one year of football, Kelso had 98 total tackles, an astonishing 17 tack les for loss, one sack, two interceptions, one deflected pass, one fumble recov ery and two forced fumbles. Kelso also has a little hand in offense as he lines up as fullback. In 2021, he rushed for six carries for 22 yards and one rush ing touchdown. On the receiving end, he had two catches for 15 yards and a receiving touchdown. “I love everything about him, espe cially his leadership,” Miller said. “He is a hard nose-old school football guy who loves to hit people.”
The Eagles are coming off a rough start to last season that finished strong with them squeezing into the playoffs. Unfortunately, the Eagles were bounced in the first round with a loss to Poteet 42-10. Luling ended their season 2-8 overall and 1-3 in district beating out Comfort into the playoffs. Look for them to improve significantly so that they are not barely making the playoffs again. ��
The Bulldogs are aligning into a new district, 3A-1 Region four District 13, with Cole and Randolph staying and some new teams added. Like Blanco, Ingram Moore, Llano and Luling.
Llano is a team all too familiar with the Marion Bulldogs. The Yellowjack ets are the team responsible for taking the Bulldogs out in the first round the past two years so revenge is on the table. The Yellowjackets finished their year 9-2 overall and 4-0 in district. Their season ended in the area round where they lost to San Diego 28-21, so look for this team to have expectations at going farther than area.

New District—Revenge Game
The Panthers are coming from a district consisting of Llano, Lago Vista, Luling and Comfort. They finished their season last year 5-7 overall and 2-2 in district, which was good for third place. They finished their season by advancing out of the first round of playoffs and even tually falling to Edna in the second round by a score of 48-12. Look for the Panthers to find success early with their experience of half off the teams in the new district.
The Warriors are coming off a disap pointing season with them fishing 2-8 overall and not being able find a district win ending 0-5. With them finishing last in the district a playoff game was out of the question. Not only are they trying to bounce back off a disappointing season, the Warriors are moving up classifica tions to 3A Division I. Look for them to be a gritty team not to be taken lightly.

BULLDOGS
Following a 3-7 season that saw the Bulldogs finish seventh in the American Southwest Confer ence (ASC) and the retirement of head coach Ricky Matt, Texas Lutheran foot ball enters a new era in 2022. Former Texas Lutheran offensive coordinator Neal Lahue accepted the opportu nity to serve as the Bulldogs 23rd head coach in program history as he guides the team program into its 25th season since its return to play in 1998. LaHue brings over 35 years of coaching expe rience to Texas Lutheran including stints at Ingleside, Calallen, Seguin, Tivy, Hays and Westlake High Schools – coaching future Super Bowl cham pion Drew Brees during his tenure at Westlake. LaHue has also coached collegiately at Texas A&M-Kingsville (1985-87, 2020-21) for two stints along with a two-year tenure at Texas Lutheran (2018-19) as offensive coor dinator. During his tenure as offensive coordinator at Texas Lutheran Univer sity, the Bulldogs compiled a 15-5 record, including a 2019 season that saw the Bulldogs average 33.4 points and 424.1 yards per game. Now, return ing to Seguin as the head coach of the

The Bulldogs passing game is led by senior all-conference tight end Aaron Sotelo who led all Bulldogs with 24 receptions last season. All-ASC wide receiver Trent Stefka returns on the outside following a 2021 season that saw him lead the team with 345 receiving yards.Theoffensive line is where the biggest question marks lie as the Bull dogs only return one starter, senior right guard Nakoven Lewis, up front. Expect a newer, fast-paced offense in Seguin in 2022 as the Bulldogs sort the depth chart through camp start ing Aug. 11 until the home opener on Sept. 3 against Howard Payne.
Previewing Texas Lutheran’s Offense FOR 2022 After two seasons under now-re tired offensive coordinator Brent Verzwyvelt, the Bulldogs will imple ment a new offense. Gone are the days of the modified Wing-T and Veer Triple Option offense that was heavily reliant on running the football as the Bulldogs move to the spread offense under the tutelage of LaHue.
Previewing Texas Lutheran’s Defense for 2022 Youth and inexperience defined the Bulldogs defense in 2021 as fresh man were littered across the Bulldogs’ defense that finished in last place in the ASC. Now under the leadership of first-year defensive coordinator Beau Grech and led by a defensive line with three returning all-conference players: Montrey Smith, Christian Monroe and Joshua Stanton, the Bulldogs look to return to form as one of the more formi dable defenses in the conference. The
The offense returns a number of All-Conference talent in quarter back Seth Cosme, tight end Aaron Sotelo, wide receiver Trent Stefka, and running back DaKory Willis. The Bulldogs also return last season’s leading rusher in Jacob Forton who rushed for 608 yards and eight touch downs last season.
Bulldogs, LaHue looks to replicate that same success and turn around a Bull dogs squad that ranked eighth in total offense in the ASC last season. The Bulldogs had an impressive offseason overturning their staffincluding promoting Beau Grech to defensive coordinator and poaching Jody Ford from Incarnate Word to add to a staff that now rivals a Division-I staff in terms of size with 14 coaches on staff. The coaches have worked hard since February to bring in a recruit ing class of 78 players, including three transfers, as they look to replace a class of 13 seniors and six all-conference players.Texas Lutheran will look to return to its winning ways against a competitive schedule that boasts three D3Football.com Preseason Top 25 teams in ninth-ranked, rival Trinity (TX) (Sept. 17), defending national champion No. 1 Mary Hardin-Baylor, and No. 6 Hardin-Simmons. The Bull dogs will host both Mary Hardin-Bay lor (Oct. 15) and Hardin-Simmons (Nov. 12) at Bulldog Stadium in 2022.
Previewing Texas Lutheran’s Specialists for 2022 Texas Lutheran must replace first team All-ASC kicker Juan Ocampo, who finished his four-year career as a four-time all-conference kicker and third all-time in field goals made (30) in TLU history. The 2021 ASC Newcomer of the Year and New Braunfels native Cameron Welch is expected to handle the punting duties, while a camp battle will ensue for kick ing and kickoff duties. The Bulldogs return their top three returners from last season in Eugene Robinson IV, Keon Torello, and DaKory Willis. 2022 provides a clean slate for Texas Lutheran as it begins a new era under LaHue and staff. The ASC schedule will always be a gauntlet, but one thing the staff promises is that the Bulldogs will compete from the first kickoff through the final horn. The style of play will be a stark contrast from 2021 so Bulldogs fans can expect to see a stark contrast in style of play as they witness a Bulldog team that will look to rekindle the cham pionship spirit in Seguin as Bulldog Stadium returns to full capacity for the first time since 2019.

Bulldogs will shift from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4 with a more experienced back end of the defense returning this season. Six of the top 10 leading tacklers return along with 10 players that started at least one game last season. The secondary will be led by cornerback Eugene Robinson IV, who led Texas Lutheran with three interceptions last season.Twoof Texas Lutheran’s leading tacklers, Markel Turner and David Augustin, return to a linebacker corps that should be able to shuffle through talent throughout the season. There’s still questions about the Bulldogs defense as it adjusts and shuf fles players around to the new scheme and while, still relatively young age wise, the young Bulldogs grew up last season and returns a more mature group that learned from last season’s growing pains.
