SEGUIN, TEXAS
G
Welcome
reetings and welcome to Seguin. We hope you enjoy our beautiful town and your time with us. It truly is a special place. Seguin is one of the oldest towns in Texas, founded in 1838, just 16 months after the Texas Revolution. The roads and buildings might look a little different than they did back then, but the small town hospitality and charm hasn’t changed a bit. Whether you are here to float the Guadalupe River, shop, dine or see the World’s Largest Pecan, Seguin offers a little bit of everything for all ages. There is a rich history here, and everyone has a story to tell. This magazine is a guide for visitors and residents, highlighting all that Seguin has to offer. We hope that you fall in love with Seguin, just as we did many years ago.

seguin – Home of the world largest pecan Weight: 3,320 lbs. | length: 16 ft. | diameter: 8.5 ft. | pie count: unknown Billed as the “World’s Largest Pecan,” the gargantuan nut is a tourist stop that pays homage to Guadalupe County’s key crop. But the one in front of the courthouse isn’t really the “World’s Largest” — despite the sign. That honor was snatched away by PAGE 4
Brunswick, Missouri, for a few years before a larger nut was crafted in Seguin to retake the title in 2011. That pecan, which once traveled to parades and special events throughout the area, makes its home at the Texas Agricultural Education and Heritage Center right outside
town at what is known as The Big Red Barn. The area celebrates the honored nut with Pecan Fest every fall, and H-E-B offers a seasonal ice cream in their Creamy Creations line at the start of each year called Texas Vanilla Seguin Pecan.

Seguin was built on land granted by the Mexican Government to Sir Humphrey Branch, under the emprassario grant of Green DeWitt. This land grant, recorded in the State Land Office at Austin, bears the date of May 1830. Branch perfected his grant by settling on the present townsite in November 1831. About 1834, the area settlers moved to Gonzales for protection from the almost constant attacks by Native Americans. Prior to 1838, Seguin was known as Walnut Springs. When it was found that another locality in Texas had previously recorded the name of Walnut Springs, Texas, the shareholders voted to adopt a new name. The choice was between Tuscumbia and Seguin, and Seguin won by 11 votes. The name of Seguin honors Juan N. Seguin, who was a colonel in the Texas Cavalry at San Jacinto. On March 24, 1846, an act by the First Legislature read as follow: “ … be it enacted by the Legislature of the State of Texas that the town of Seguin be declared the Seat of Justice in the County of Guadalupe.” Then on March 30, 1846, Guadalupe County was created from parts of Bexar and Gonzales counties. By this Act, Guadalupe County became one of the first 10 counties created by the Legislature of Texas and Seguin became a county seat before there was a county to actually be the seat of. The city of Seguin was incorporated in 1853, with John R. King as its first mayor. A copy of the “Incorporation of Seguin” was printed in the Seguin Mercury, one of Seguin’s first newspapers. The Galveston and Harrisburg Railroad was built through Seguin in 1875. The first public school building was erected in 1889, but the first school was taught by Reverend David Thompson in 1842.

the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Originally a natural rock outcropping, the dam was first improved by Henry Troell in the late 1800s when he added rock to the dam to raise the water level to power a cotton gin. The City of Seguin bought Troell’s property in 1907 to further develop the river’s hydroelectricity, and subsequent improvements have led to the establishment of a hydroelectric plant on the dam’s south side.

B. Travis, further aiding as a courier during siege of the Alamo. He defended fleeing settlers in the “Runaway Scrape” after the fall of the Alamo. estled within large, open meadows and trees on the west side of Seguin is a beautiful outdoor space for all ages and interests to enjoy. Park West is the City’s newest and one of its most popular recreational areas. The 47-acre community park, located at the southeast corner of North Vaughan Avenue and San Antonio Avenue, boasts a myriad of fun attractions, including a splash pad, skatepark, nature trails, an inclusive playscape, lighted basketball court, a BMX pump track, large covered pavilion, concession building, restrooms, several covered picnic areas, 3 soccer fields, walking/ jogging trails, and a pedestrian bridge extending over Walnut Branch. Park West occupies an area formerly known as the Hoermann Property, which remained undeveloped for nearly a decade. The City purchased the property in 2007 with the intention of developing a new park on the west side of the Seguin. Park West, the newest component of the Seguin Community Park System, was part of an overall $5 million voter-approved bond election in 2013. The north side of the park opened to the public in September 2015, followed by the south side of the park opening in March 2016. The park has several unique features, one of which is an ADA-accessible playground, giving children with disabilities an opportunity to play along-side their friends. Featuring wheelchair access ramps, a wheelchair accessible “Rock n’ Ship,” cushioned artificial green turf and an all-abilities swing, disabled children can get all the way around the playscape and enjoy being at the upper level of the playground with their friends. The 11,000 square ft. MTR Skatepark, located at 919 San Antonio Avenue, truly distinPAGE 14

guishes Park West from any other park in the region. Named in memory of Michael Thomas Raetzsch, an avid local skater who passed away in 2009, the skatepark is ideal for amateur or advanced skaters to test and perfect their skills. Inspired by the plaza area in front of the Seguin Coliseum, the skatepark’s design consists of popular features, including stairs, rails, ramps, ledges, banks, manual pads and quarter pipes. In addition to MTR Skatepark, Park West also has a BMX Pump Track, the only off-road course in the region designed for beginner to moderate-level BMX and mountain bikers. The track is located on the northeast side of the park next to the basketball court off San Antonio Avenue. The course includes a start hill to roll into the course. A beginner and intermediate dirt jump line with rollers and tables lead into a berm. The pump track is a circle of rollers and berms designed for bikers to “pump” through the track without pedaling. The splash pad at Park West offers a great way for kids to cool off from the relentless Texas heat. There are plenty of shaded picnic areas adjacent to the splash pad and the playground for parents to sit nearby and watch their children play and have fun. The splash pad is open daily from 9 am to 9 pm, and admission is always FREE! For those who enjoy walking, hiking, biking or jogging, there is a 0.8 mile concrete multi-purpose trail within Park West on the south side of Walnut Branch. The trail meanders through the park and woods, connecting to the Walnut Springs Trail. In late 2018, a pedestrian bridge was installed over Walnut Branch, providing visitors the ability to safely walk across the creek. This bridge is part of an inner-park trail and a connector to the sidewalk that runs along North Vaughan Street from San Antonio Avenue to Court Street. Park West is also a great place to enjoy the beautiful sights and sounds of nature. Walking along the nature trail, visitors can see unique plants, birds, wildlife and conservation efforts. The Guadalupe Master Naturalists, a volunteer-based organization that aims to keep the community educated and interested in the outdoors, partners with the Parks and Recreation Department to offer guided

nature walks, bird watching events and other nature programs at Park West. The Park West Pollinator and Water Conservation Garden is also one of the park’s distinctive qualities. Made possible by a Texas Smart Water Grant, the garden serves as an education point to create awareness about the importance of agriculture, plants, pollinators and water conservation. With so many different things to do and see, Park West is truly one of Seguin’s crown jewels!

Education Seguin ISD District Phone: 830-401-8600 District Website: www.seguinisd.net Superintendent: Matthew Gutierrez Seguin Independent School District Covering 365 square miles of Guadalupe County, Seguin ISD offers quality educational programs and experiences for more than 7,400 students. Seguin ISD is large enough to offer a wide variety of academic and extracurricular opportunities yet small enough to help each student develop full potential in a caring, supportive learning environment. Here, teaching transcends simple acquisition of knowledge to instill critical thinking skills, problem-solving abilities and creative talents. As one of the area’s largest employers, Matador Country consists of 13 campuses including one prekindergarten, seven K-5 elementary schools, two middle schools, one 5A high school plus a non-traditional high school learning center and a discipline alternative campus. Seguin ISD and its campuses received the “Met Standard” designation by the Texas Education Agency (TEA) based upon the state’s most recent accountability rating. A total of 12 coveted Distinction Designations were earned by five schools. Voters approved a $64.7 million bond election by a 2-1 margin in May 2019 for several projects including a new Matador Stadium, renovations at Briesemeister Middle School and improvements at Jefferson Elementary. Home of the Matadors Seguin High School serves nearly 2,000 9-12 grade students. The historic 5A campus is home to the Seguin Early College High School thanks to a partnership with St. Philip’s College of the Alamo Colleges. This College for All program, initiated in 2014, allows each student to earn college credits up to an associate degree while simultaneously working toward a high school diploma—free of charge to students and families. Seguin High School offers more than 200 academic and Career & Technical Education (CTE) classes, resulting in a wide variety of course choices to meet student preferences and needs. Students and staff proudly opened the newly constructed Seguin High School in August 2017. The state-of-the-are facility serves as a tremendous boost to the secondary academic environment. The new high school has boosted Matador pride to new levels as students are afforded the most current technology, lab space and facility features to meet increasing state PAGE 18
educational standards. Overall, Matadors excel in an array of co-curricular and extra-curricular opportunities, from Global award winning Destination Imagination teams to competitive athletics, plus award-winning academic-based technical, JROTC and fine arts programs. Middle Schools A.J. Briesemeister and Jim Barnes middle schools serve the district’s sixth, seventh and eighth grade students. Technology is deeply rooted into the strong core course curriculum. Advanced math prepares students for high school credit, while hands-on lab work and computer-assisted simulations help students with their science assignments. Electives and extracurricular opportunities allow middle schoolers to find niches, develop talents and sharpen skills in athletics, vocal or instrumental music, art, theater arts and foreign language. Leadership is nurtured through student government, PALS peer tutoring and honor societies. Students earn academic recognition through the Duke University Talent Identification Program, UIL and Destination Imagination. Elementary Education The seven Seguin ISD elementary schools provide a foundation for the well-rounded curriculum and new instructional programs. Several initiatives, implemented in the 2018-19 school year, include the LiiNK student fitness program at Jefferson and McQueeney elementaries, a two-way dual language program at Koennecke Elementary, AVID at Vogel Elementary and Fine Arts at Weinert Elementary School. Children benefit from a balanced approach to reading

instruction, from literary skills reinforced in computer labs and the Accelerated Reader program. Math concepts are visualized through use of manipulatives and labs boost science lessons. Elementary students develop skills in iMac computer labs and use mobile labs in class. Keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, database, robotics, telecommunications and multimedia presentation instruction help build strong tech foundations. Students have access to peripherals such as iPods, digital cameras and scanners. Campus-based extras include special interest clubs such as Destination Imagination teams that have won Global competition, student council and performing choir. Fifth graders participate in an overnight camping trip to H-E-B
Camp in Leakey where they perform science experiments, sharpen outdoor recreation skills and team build. Students experience real world science at the Irma Lewis Seguin Outdoor Learning Center. First Steps Seguin ISD’s youngest students embark upon their public school journey in the halls of Ball Early Childhood Center. Three and 4-year-olds benefit from the rich, nurturing atmosphere where teachers focus on language and early literacy development. The Ball staff offers students the opportunity to interact in an exciting language and tactile environment

Seguin Christian Academy was founded in 2012 to continue the Christian Education ministry that began at First Baptist Church in the 1960s. When First Baptist Christian Academy was closed at the end of the 2011-2012 school year, a group of Christians came together and formed Seguin Christian Academy to ensure that families in Seguin and the surround-

ing communities would continue to have options for private, Christian education. We continue to believe that evangelism begins in our own communities, and a mission-minded ministry lies at the forefront of Seguin Christian Academy’s approach to education. SCA believes if we don’t reach the children for Christ, there will be no one left in future generations to be His witness, “For so hath the Lord commanded us, saying, I have set thee to be a light of the Gentiles, that thou shouldest be for salvation unto the ends of the earth” (Acts 13:47). Students are educated in a loving Christian environment by highly qualified teachers and are led by example to worship God, love their country and respect those who are in authority over them. Students receive an exemplary education in a warm, country setting with small class sizes at a 7:1 student/teacher ratio. The mission of Seguin Christian Academy is to care for God’s children, share the love of Jesus, and prepare today’s students for tomorrow’s world. We are a non-denominational Christian school; therefore, the focus is on the Bible - not doctrine. All instruction aligns with the belief that the Bible is the inspired, infallible, authoritative, inerrant Word of God. We make no distinction concerning an individual’s race or ethnic background because we acknowledge that there can be no preferential treatment with God (Romans 2:11). Come and bear witness to the peace that falls over our campus and our families. Seguin Christian Academy, 1456 E. Kingsbury St., Seguin, TX 78155. A diverse student body of approximately 1,400 with classes averaging fewer than 20 students provides a sense of community and an environment where individuality and personal growth are as integral to success as rigorous academics. TLU was designated as an official Hispanic Serving Institution in 2017. The university also prides itself on developing the whole student. The co-curriculum and extra-curriculum is developed and implemented by students, faculty, and staff to provide a variety of academic, social, and cultural activities and organizations. Special emphasis is also placed on civic

engagement and service learning. From 2017 through 2018, students, faculty and staff logged more than 30,000 hours of community service. This number also includes service hours from courses with a civic engagement component, nursing clinical hours at local hospitals and facilities, and education fieldwork within the local school districts. Approximately one-third of students participate in one of 18 intercollegiate athletic teams. Men’s teams include baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, indoor and outdoor track & field, cross country and tennis. Women participate in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, and volleyball. The Bulldogs are a NCAA Division III membership institution and belong to two athletic conferences: the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and the American Southwest Conference for football. A significant number of TLU students also showcase their talent and creativity through the fine arts. Nearly a quarter of the university’s full-time students participate in TLU’s music, dramatic media, and visual arts programs. The Caroline Weston Center for the Performing Arts had its grand opening in January 2018 and was the most ambitious construction project in university history. The new space includes a studio theatre, video production space, a 32,000-square-foot School of Music Building featuring band, choir, orchestra, and ensemble rehearsal halls, studio and classroom space, student practice rooms, faculty offices and renovations to Jackson Auditorium. TLU also encourages students to study abroad, participate in seminars, internships, and faculty-student research, and b e c o m e involved in various organizations and activities.

eguin would be a very different place without the Guadalupe River. Whether wrapping around the golf course and playgrounds at Starcke Park or widening into one of the many lakes dotting the river like beads on a chain, the river measures the pace of life along its banks. A large variety of birds, reptiles, fish and insects call the river home, adding to the enjoyment of living and playing along the river, but also adding rules and regulations for use that protect the wildlife. Efforts to keep the water in its natural state benefit the wildlife and keep the river and lakes as a welcome retreat for anglers, boaters and water skiers. While local anglers are lured to the river by largemouth bass, Guadalupe bass and channel catfish, many other visitors enjoy opportunities for boating and swimming. It is also sports miles of kayaking trails, floating the river and accessibility for stand up paddle boarding, among other activities. The Guadalupe River winds 431 miles from its source near the town of Hunt in the Hill Country, meandering placidly through Seguin and South Central Texas to where it deposits into the Gulf of Mexico at San Antonio Bay. The Guadalupe’s natural beauty has made the river a draw to residents and weekend visitors alike. The river’s watershed covers an area of 6,616 square miles while collecting runoff from rainfall, streams, tributaries and springs flowing from the Edwards Aquifer. Heavy rainfall can have a devastating effect as the water accumulates and rushes downstream.

T
he Guadalupe and Blanco Rivers have long provided South Texas with ecosystems featuring unparalleled natural beauty that attracts people from all over the state, waterways that can unleash extreme destructive power in flooding situations, habitats that are home to multiple endangered species and an assortment of natural resources that sustain millions of people and multibillion-dollar economies. In the early 1900s, after Texas experienced both severe drought and devastating floods, the State Legislature created the first river authorities associated with river basins to manage those water resources and plan for future developments in the basins. In 1933, the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority (GBRA) was created to provide stewardship for the water resources in its 10-county district, which begins near the headwaters of the Guadalupe and Blanco Rivers, and ends at San Antonio Bay. Counties in the district include Kendall, Comal, Hays, Caldwell, Guadalupe, Gonzales, DeWitt, Victoria, Calhoun and Refugio. Over the last several decades, river authorities in Texas have been pioneers in developing and implementing water policy and strategies, and the state has been a recognized national leader in developing 50-year regional water plans. GBRA’s water planning and resource development, like all water entities in Texas, is accomplished within the overall consideration of regional and statewide water needs. It is that type of local, regional and statewide collaboration that GBRA has made a cornerstone of its operations and subsequent success. Following the drought and floods of the 1950s, GBRA supported a statewide Water Resource Development and Conservation Plan and agreed to serve as the local sponsor

for the Canyon Reservoir project. The organization spent the early 1960s working with federal entities to plan and develop the Canyon Reservoir as the basin’s only flood storage reservoir and a significant water supply source for the region. During that same time period, GBRA began to acquire infrastructure and water rights throughout the basin, including the purchase of the Guadalupe Valley Hydroelectric System and the Calhoun County Canal System, empowering GBRA to begin providing operational services. Canyon Reservoir was completed in 1964. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which owns the reservoir, and GBRA provide flood control protection and stored water supply management of the lake. GBRA operates the water storage portion to provide municipal, industrial and agricultural customers with a dependable water supply including during drought conditions. After the completion of Canyon Reservoir in 1964, GBRA began to take on utility services operations to address the economic and population growth in the decades following. In 1965, GBRA managed construction of the Lower Guadalupe Diversion Dam and Saltwater Barrier. The development of the saltwater barrier on the Guadalupe River, just downstream of the confluence of the Guadalupe and San Antonio Rivers, provided protection against salt water encroachment from the San Antonio Bay. That project also initiated the diversion of raw water supplies to industries and municipalities in Calhoun County. In 1969, GBRA constructed the Port Lavaca Water Treatment Plant. Previously, the city relied on poor quality, brackish groundwater pumped from the Gulf Coast aquifer. With the construction of the saltwater barrier, and in conjunction
PAGE 29
with GBRA’s senior run-of-river water rights and water stored in Canyon Reservoir, the plant was able to produce highquality treated drinking water for distribution to customers in Calhoun County. The Port Lavaca plant was GBRA’s first water treatment plant. In the 1970s, GBRA contracted with the City of Victoria to operate its Willow Street Wastewater Treatment Plant and constructed a new, larger Regional Wastewater Reclamation System. To address the growing need to assist small Texas cities, GBRA created its Rural Utilities Division (RUD) to construct and operate several small wastewater treatment plants and drinking water treatment facilities. A major addition to the GBRA operation occurred with the startup of the river authority’s own water quality laboratory in 1974. The GBRA Lab began offering support services for GBRA-operated water and wastewater plants. Additionally, its highly-trained personnel offered chemical and bacteriological testing for cities, water districts, industries, consulting firms and private individuals. The GBRA lab also evolved into providing environmental monitoring and surface water sampling and quality testing throughout the 10-county service area. In the decade of the 1980s, because of Canyon Reservoir’s ability to deliver a firm water supply, Central Power and Light Company contracted GBRA to construct and operate the Coleto Creek Reservoir 15 miles southwest of Victoria. The reservoir was designed as a cooling lake for a coal-fired electric generating plant and still meets that power plant’s needs today. GBRA’s growth accelerated rapidly in the 1990s. During that time period, GBRA constructed and/or assumed opera-
tions of seven wastewater treatment plants located in the Cities of Lockhart, Buda, Crestview in Calhoun County, the Cordillera Ranch subdivision in Kendall County, and Shadow Creek and Sunfield subdivisions in Hays County. During the first years of the new millennium, GBRA assumed operation of water treatment plants for the City of San Marcos and City of Lockhart. It also constructed the 10 million gallon per day Western Canyon Plant that serves portions of Comal and Kendall counties. The organization’s water resources development efforts also included the construction of two raw water pipelines and two treated water pipelines totaling approximately 70 miles in length. GBRA has spent the past 85 years planning, developing and implementing water resources strategies to meet the needs of the communities thriving in its service area. Today, GBRA’s water and wastewater operations serve more than 350,000 people daily via nine water systems and 13 wastewater systems. Looking toward the future, Texas’ population is projected to increase 70 percent by 2070, and much of that expansion will be taking place in GBRA’s district, which now includes three of the top five fastest-growing counties in the nation. As the region increases in population and economic growth, so do the requirements for water supply and wastewater treatment, and GBRA will continue to be a leader in advocating for and offering professional and safe services to meet those needs.

In the early days, there were many beautiful rock fences that marked the property lines of the early settlers. Remnants of these can be seen at the east end of Nolte Street and at the corner of East Ireland and North Travis Streets. “Texas,” the horse ridden by Theodore Roosevelt in the charge of San Juan Hill in the SpanishAmerican War, was given to Roosevelt by his cousin, Colonel Moore of Seguin. Seguin is famous for its oak trees. The many beautiful oaks of Seguin have names of historical background. Many are estimated to be 500 years old or more — some even as much as 1,000 years old. One of the most famous race horses of Seguin, in the days after the Civil War, was named Seguin, and it carried our colors to win in the State Races in Austin in those days.

SYMPHONY Mid-Texas
M
id-Texas Symphony (MTS) is one of the oldest performing arts organizations in Guadalupe and Comal counties and the surrounding communities. Since its founding in 1978 by Anita Windecker, a professor of music at Texas Lutheran College, it has become inextricably woven into the cultural fabric of the area. MTS prides itself on its superb musicians, exciting programs, and on presenting guest artists with national and international reputations for excellence. In addition to its regular concert season, MTS has a long history of community involvement. Since 1988, the free children’s concerts in the fall provide a unique opportunity for almost 4000 area children each year to see and hear a live orchestral performance. Judging by the numerous, enthusiastic thank you letters and drawings received by MTS after each performance, the children and teachers are very appreciative of the orchestra and the wonderful music. Each December concert is highlighted by a children’s chorus of approximately 100 voices, singing seasonal songs with the orchestra. The children are chosen by their music teachers from Guadalupe and Comal county schools in alternate

years. MTS also helps to sponsor the very successful Community Music Academy (CMA), which offers free music instruction to area children through Texas Lutheran University. Both Seguin and New Braunfels have very active support organizations in the MTS Guild, with chapters in both cities. The Guild has sponsored a Debutante program and Ball for high school girls for over 30 years. These young women and their escorts act as ushers at the concerts during the concert season. Guild volunteers also provide hospitality for the orchestra, a very popular perk among all the musicians! Following the resignation of long time, beloved Music Director, David Mairs, the 2018-2019 season was a showcase for candidates for the position of new Music Director. The 2019-2020 season will present the outstanding winning candidate to the community. Musicians and patrons alike are eagerly looking forward to this new chapter in our history. Regular performances are held at Jackson Auditorium on the TLU campus in Seguin and at the Performing Arts Center at Canyon High School in New Braunfels on Sunday afternoons at 4:00pm. Find out more about our area’s only professional orchestra at mtsymphony.org.

his football season, the Guadalupe Country will experience the usual excitement of the Friday Night Lights. The Seguin Matadors will head into its fourth year under the direction of head coach Travis Bush. For the past three seasons, Bush has been changing the culture in the Class 5A football program. With an exciting previous year, winning the District 12-5A-DI title, the Matadors are sure to light up the night in every game this year as they face the Dripping Springs Crockett, Johnson, Lanier, McCallum, Reagan and Travis. They’ll also hit the gridiron for the classic rivalry matchup with the neighboring New Braunfels Unicorns. The huge preseason game is still on so the wages and bets will continue. The town’s most successful UIL program in recent years is the Class 4A Navarro Panthers now under the direction of Coach Rod Blount. With a new football head coach and athletic director at the helm, the Panthers made a deep run in the playoffs after coming in second in District-13-4A-Division II. The Panther’s district has longtime playoff rival Cuero and Austin Eastside Memorial, as well as Llano, Wimberley and Bandera.

The Marion Bulldogs also are entering their second year in a new district and have received football head coach Ryne Miller, who took over the program last year. With Miller calling the shots, the Bulldogs brought home the District 15-3A-DI championship and advanced the area round of the playoffs in their new division. This year, they look to carry over the championship title by facing off against San Antonio-Cole, Universal CityRandolph, Cotulla, Jourdanton, Karnes City and Lyle

The Lifegate Christian Falcons recently earned their third state title after switching from TAPPS to TCAL this season. The Falcons defeated Tyler King’s Academy Knights 5712 in the 2018 TCAL state championship game to earn the title. The state title capped their successful career as the team had an undefeated 10-0 overall under the direction of new head coach Kenny Coffman.

ou don’t need to travel far for world-class medicine. At GRMC, we believe in bringing the latest services and the highest quality of care to our patients. That’s why we’re pleased to highlight two of our new, distinctive services: pelvic floor rehabilitation and teleneurology.
Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation GRMC’s Outpatient Physical Therapy Unit’s Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation program is a new service that treats health issues resulting from dysfunctional pelvic floor muscles. Pelvic Floor Dysfunction (PFD) refers to a wide range of problems that occur when the muscles of the pelvic floor are not functioning normally. PFD can be due to infections, poor posture, trauma, surgery, pregnancy or childbirth. Some of the health issues that result from PFD are overactive bladder, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, and sexual health concerns. You might think you’re alone with PFD, but in fact millions of people are suffering from pelvic floor dysfunction. However, it often goes unidentified and untreated. Statistically, over 25 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence and 20% of Americans will suffer from some type of pelvic floor dysfunction during their lifetime. It’s PAGE 40
important to note that PFD can affect all people regardless of their gender or age. Here is some background information to help better understand the pelvic floor and dysfunction. The pelvic floor is made up of muscle and tissue that connect the pubic bone to the tailbone. This connection helps maintain upright posture, support abdominal and pelvic organs, and control the bladder. When these muscles become overactive or overused, they can become weak, tight or spastic. Other symptoms can include chronic pelvic pain, prenatal and postpartum muscle dysfunction, increased tension or pain in pelvic floor muscles, incontinence, groin pain, and burning or frequent urination. The good news is our specially-trained physical therapists at GRMC can evaluate and treat the multifaceted condition of pelvic pain and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. As a patient, your therapist will identify and address the con-

tributing factors of pelvic floor dysfunction. They do this by utilizing an individually designed and specific treatment regimen geared towards each patient’s individual needs. Pelvic Floor therapy can include a variety of exercises such as breathing and relaxation techniques, posture training, flexibility and strength, therapeutic exercises, as well as an individualized home exercise program. If you’d like to know if you could benefit from pelvic floor rehabilitation, here is a screening tool to help you. Please make a note of all that apply. • I sometimes have pelvic pain. • I can remember falling onto my tailbone, lower back or buttocks (even in childhood). • I sometimes experience one or more of the following symptoms: accidental urination, feeling unable to completely empty my bladder, having to void within a few minutes of a previous void, pain or burning with urination, difficulty stopping or frequent stopping/ starting of urine stream. • I sometimes have to get up to urinate two or more times a night. • I sometimes have a feeling of increased pelvic pressure. • I have a history of pain in my low back, hip, groin or tailbone or have sciatica. • I sometimes experience bowel control symptoms. • I sometimes experience pain or discomfort with sexual intercourse. • Sexual activity increases one or more of my symptoms. • Prolonged sitting increases my symptoms. If you said yes on three or more of these areas, pelvic floor dysfunction is likely. You could be an ideal candidate to benefit from GRMC’s Outpatient Physical Therapy Unit’s Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation program. For more information on Pelvic Floor Therapy at GRMC, please call 830.401.7451. Teleneurology Another service we’re proud to offer our patients, is GRMC’s best-in-class inpatient, non-emergency teleneurology. Telenueurology allows a neurologist to observe a
patient from a remote location using a video link, while a medical professional helps to assess the patient in-person. Teleneurology gives patients ability to stay close to home, yet receive top notch care through this innovative technology. It can make hospital stays shorter by eliminating barriers that limit access to specialty care in order to achieve the best possible outcome for every patient. In addition, this technology will make it faster and easier to consult with a neurology professional for suggested treatments or further recommendations for diagnosis. GRMC’s teleneurology program collaborates with board-certified neurologists that can be accessed in our inpatient setting 365 days a year. During the consultation process, the neurologist is able to diagnose the patient and, along with the assisting medical professional, a treatment plan is devised. Some conditions neurologists can diagnose to treat with this technology include dementia, stroke, multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. Teleneurology is an increasingly important aspect of today’s neurological practices. Both patients and clinicians are benefitting from the speed, convenience and ease of this technology. It is now an integral part of modern diagnoses, treatments and follow-up care. Through the seamless access to remote neurology care you can receive at GRMC, we are delivering on our mission to provide advanced medicine with a personal touch. At GRMC, we choose excellence, so you can too. From being the only facility in the region to use the latest in robotic technology, to our more than 100 highly-skilled physicians and over 35 specialties, GRMC has earned its reputation for delivering consistently exceptional and comprehensive care. We know every positive encounter that a patient has during their stay is a direct result of our team’s commitment to provide quality healthcare for each patient we have the privilege to care for. GRMC has been Seguin’s #1 choice for healthcare since 1965. That’s more that 50 years of providing state-of-the-art technology and the most individualized care to our patients, community and region.
