Losing someone can be difficult

T

here is no such thing as an easy loss. It is never easy to lose someone either suddenly or after battling a long illness. But it’s important to take your mental health and wellness seriously during your season of grief. Here are a few tips on how to take care of yourself after the loss of a loved one. • Take as much time as you need to grieve. There is no one way to process a loss. Some people work best by moving right along as if nothing had happened while others need days, weeks, months or even years to get back to something that even briefly resembles a status quo. It’s okay if you have days where you barely feel like getting out of bed, those will happen. It’s okay if you have a passing moment at work or with friends when you feel like crying, those will happen. It’s okay if you still have more bad days than good. If you need to and are able to take time off, do so. If you need to and are able to, take a little trip and get away from it all. • Understand and know when perhaps you need to seek professional help. Grief comes with a myriad of complex emotions that range from anger to sadness to anxiety or even just feeling nothing. And while many can move on from grief with just time, others need the help of a trained therapist or psychologist. You are not lesser, broken or inferior for needing the help of a trained professional — that’s why they’re there. Seeing a therapist can be a vital step in moving through your season of grief. They can help you find and form the tools and strate-

gies necessary for moving through grief. Making that first appointment can seem daunting but it will be liberating once you’ve started. If you are worried about seeing a therapist one-on-one, consider going a grief support group. Sometimes being in a group surrounded by people who have experienced something similar to you, it is much easier to be open and honest. Find the strategy that works best for you and don’t be afraid to get the help you need. • Be honest about how you are feeling with friends and family. Sometimes that can be difficult. Grief likes to hide emotions beneath other emotions. Sometimes anger is not really anger, it’s sadness or disappointment. Sometimes sadness is not really sadness, it’s apathy or even simply fatigue. Journaling can help you sort through your feelings. When asked about how you are feeling, be honest. Admit it and when you are not having a good day. Your friends and family want to support you through your dark days and they can only help you if they know you need such help. Goetz Funeral Home is here to help you through your time of need. If you would ever like to discuss your options when it comes to grief therapy, grief support or resources for different types of grief and loss, feel free to stop by our funeral home. We are here for you.

Pre-Planning helps your loved ones heal

“The agency with a heart”

1064 E. Ireland Seguin, Texas

F

rom picking up the kids from school, going to the grocery store, cleaning the house to making sure everything is in order. Us ladies have a lot to worry about in our day-to-day life. But there’s one important topic that you may not have considered planning ahead for. No one likes to think about making end of life decisions, but pre-planning and thinking ahead can help remove some of the stress one faces under the grief and pain of losing a loved one. Pre-planning a funeral service for you or loved ones’ can take many forms and can be done in a few steps over time to help ease stress and fit more comfortably in a busy schedule. Taking the time to write up a will or advanced directive is an important aspect of pre-planning. Other important aspects, include setting out what funeral home you would like to handle your services; what items go to who and where; and most importantly any personalized touches you would like as part of your funeral service. Maybe there is a particular song you would like played that was meaningful to you or your loved one; a certain church or location you would like your services held; special hymns, prayers or poems to be said during you or your loved one’s service: all of those things can be placed in your pre-planning documents. No detail is too small to consider when planning the perfect service for you or your loved one. From flower choices to particular hobbies that were special or even colors that are deeply treasured — each one is an important aspect to making sure that the service

is a perfect representation of the person who was lost. Pre-planning and pre-arranging also can help to relieve the financial concerns that often accompany the loss of a loved one. Funeral services can be expensive and starting to prepare and pay on a cemetery space, cremation niche space, monument or service can help remove some of the worries of such expenses piling up all at once during such an emotional time. Before meeting with a pre-planning specialist or funeral home associate, feel free to ask questions. Ask to tour the funeral home or cemetery. Ask about costs and request to have any expenses explained. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. This first meeting with a pre-planning specialist or funeral home associate may be a little daunting but don’t worry, they understand that this is a difficult meeting and a difficult and sensitive topic to cover. Making these end of life choices can be emotional. Take your time. No one likes to think about this for themselves or for someone they love but by taking these steps now, you’ll be able to move through some of the more arduous aspects of funeral planning rather than at the last minute. You will be able to focus on spending time with your loved ones and working through your grief. If you would like to discuss your options more, the staff of Guadalupe Valley Memorial Park is more than happy to assist you. We are happy to answer your questions or let you take a tour of our lush Memorial Park. We are happy to help.

Factors to consider before pursuing an advanced degree

A

dvanced degrees have long been associated with better career prospects and higher earnings. Women seem to be especially aware of that, as the Council of Graduate Schools/GRE Survey of Graduate Enrollment and Degrees noted that, in the fall of 2017, the majority of first-time graduate students at all levels were women. Among master’s degree candidate’s that fall, 59 percent were female while 53.5 percent of doctoral candidates were women. The decision to pursue an advanced degree requires careful consideration. Such a pursuit requires a considerable investment of time and money, and while those are two important factors to consider before making a decision (more on that below), they’re not the only things women must think of as they try to make the best decision. Timing Timing and time are two different

things. While many people considering graduate degrees think about how much time they’ll need to complete their degrees, timing also merits consideration. Newly minted graduates may want to take a break after expending so much effort to earn their undergraduate degrees. Taking time between degrees can provide the opportunity to recharge, and it also can give young graduates a chance to get some professional experience. That experience can inform their future grad school decision, perhaps reassuring them they’re on the right career path or compelling them to pursue other avenues. But enrolling right after completing your undergraduate studies can be beneficial as well. That’s especially so for recent grads who hope to start a family soon after graduation. The longer you delay enrolling in a graduate program, the longer you may delay starting a family, which can have a lasting impact.

Career prospects While it’s easy to assume an advanced degree will greatly enhance your career prospects and increase your earning potential, it’s not necessarily that simple. When considering the pursuit of an advanced degree, try to determine if you’ll be in the workforce long enough to benefit from the increased earnings. Women who are mid- to late-career might not benefit considerably or at all from the extra earnings if they’re paying for their advanced degrees themselves, as the cost of tuition and other fees might be higher than the extra earnings. In addition, some advanced degrees won’t necessarily lead to considerably higher salaries than you’re likely to earn with a bachelor’s degree. That will depend on your profession. Time The time required to pursue an advanced degree merits strong consideration. Many students pursuing a

master’s degree full-time can earn their degrees in two years, while those who attend part-time will need more time to complete their degree programs. Doctoral programs take considerably longer. Cost The cost of an advanced degree varies widely depending on the program. Some programs may cost $20,000 or less, while others will cost more than $100,000. Many doctoral candidates receive financial aid from their schools or lenders, but the cost of a Ph.D. is still considerable, especially when considering the potential lost earnings during the years while the degree is being pursued. Women receive the majority of advanced degrees earned at colleges and universities across the country. Choosing whether or not to pursue such a degree requires careful consideration of a host of factors.

Nights out help mothers recharge

Proud to be part of our community

Wendell Smith 830-379-0555

Regular nights out with friends can make it a bit easier for moms to juggle the responsibilities of being a mom, a caregiver or both.

C

aring for children requires dedication and patience. Even though infants and toddlers may exact the most attention from mom, each stage of childhood presents new challenges. Motherhood is a task that demands much from women, and those demands can certainly pack on the pressure. Couple the pressure of raising children with the growing trend of women serving as primary caregivers to aging parents, and it’s no surprise many women feel as those they need a respite. That’s what makes nights out with friends so essential. Here are just some of the many reasons why caregivers need to make time for socialization.

Caregiving can be alienating. No matter how well-meaning moms and caregivers may be, they may grow to resent the work involved because the only interactions they may have on a daily basis are care-related. Women should get out regularly so they can focus on themselves and enjoy their relationships with friends. Have a reason to get dolled up. When other responsibilities take priority, putting on makeup or wearing nice clothing can take a back seat. Girls’ night out provides a reason to wear fancy clothes, do your hair and don a little mascara. Girlfriends tend to notice these beautifying changes and offer compliments — which can be a nice ego boost. Girls’ night out is a free therapy session. It won’t take the place of counseling provided by a licensed therapist, but a girls’ night out offers a chance to get things off your chest and seek advice from friends who may be in similar situations. You can indulge a little and laugh along the way. Loosening up with a glass of wine can help the conversation flow. Nights out with friends also will probably lead to a few laughs, which can certainly be helpful when life seems a tad overwhelming.

Did you know? The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World Health Organization recommend that infants be exclusively breastfed for about the first six months of their lives. However, the organizations’ recommendations differ slightly in regard to how long women should continue breastfeeding thereafter. The AAP advises women to continue breastfeeding along with introducing appropriate complementary foods for one year or longer. The WHO echoes those sentiments while recommending that women continue to breastfeed up to two years of age. Though such recommendations aren’t conflicting, they are different, and women curious about how long they should continue breastfeeding should discuss their concerns with their children’s pediatricians. While some women may not be able to breastfeed for one year, much less two, making a concerted effort to breastfeed infants can have a profound impact on the health of the child. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that infants who are breastfed have a lower risk of developing various conditions, including ear infections, asthma, type 2 diabetes, eczema, inflammatory bowel disease, and respiratory infections. In addition, the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is lower among infants who are breastfed than it is for infants who are fed formula.

Other symptoms can include chronic pelvic pain, prenatal and postpartum muscle dysfunction, increased tension or pain in pelvic floor muscles, incontinence, groin pain and burning or frequent urination. The good news is our speciallytrained physical therapists at GRMC can evaluate and treat the multifaceted condition of pelvic pain and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. As a patient, your therapist will identify and address the contributing factors of pelvic floor dysfunction. They do this by utilizing an individually designed and specific treatment regimen geared towards each patient’s individual needs. Pelvic Floor therapy sessions are conducted one-on-one with a licensed physical therapist in a private treatment room and can include a variety of exercises such as breathing and relaxation techniques, full body movement and posture training, flexibility and strength, therapeutic exercises, as well as an individualized home exercise program. If you’d like to know if you could benefit from pelvic floor rehabilitation, here is a screening tool to help you. Please make a note of all that apply. • Sometimes I have pelvic pain. • I can remember falling onto my tailbone, lower back or buttocks (even in childhood). • I sometimes experience one or more of the following symptoms: accidental urination, feeling

unable to completely empty my bladder, having to void within a few minutes of a previous void, pain or burning with urination, difficulty stopping or frequent stopping/starting of urine stream. • I sometimes have to get up to urinate two or more times a night. • I sometimes have a feeling of increased pelvic pressure. • I have a history of pain in my low back, hip, groin or tailbone or have sciatica. • I sometimes experience bowel control symptoms. • I sometimes experience pain or discomfort with sexual intercourse. • Sexual activity increases one or more of my symptoms. • Prolonged sitting increases my symptoms. If you said yes on three or more of these areas, pelvic floor dysfunction is likely. You could be an ideal candidate to benefit from GRMC’s Outpatient Physical Therapy Unit’s Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation program. To sign up for Pelvic Floor Rehabilitation at GRMC first talk to your medical provider about your symptoms. If they feel physical therapy is an appropriate option for you, a referral for physical therapy can be written. They may fax the referral directly to GRMC Outpatient Physical Therapy, or you may call or bring your referral by the clinic. For more information on Pelvic Floor Therapy at GRMC, please call 830-401-7565.

HEALTH SCREENINGS every woman should get

13

Healthy diets and daily exercise are hallmarks of healthy people, but routine wellness exams are just as important.

R

outine wellness exams are essential for women who want to maintain and/or improve their health. Women may not be familiar with all of the screening options that can keep them on the right track. Preventative health screenings can shed light on risks for certain diseases and provide insight into patient behaviors that may be harmful. Screenings also may help save a life. Healthy diets and daily exercise are hallmarks of healthy people, but routine wellness exams are just as important. The following are some screenings women should include in their health and wellness routines.

Women should speak to their doctors about personalized screenings based on family history and other risk factors.

Blood pressure

Cholesterol

Blood-glucose test

Doctors will typically test blood pressure at every visit. Women whose blood pressure is below 120/80 mmHg can go every two years between blood pressure readings up until age 20, advises The American Heart Association. Adults 40 or older, or those with conditions that put them at risk for hypertension, should go annually or as advised by a doctor.

Cholesterol levels alone are not indicative of one’s overall health. However, a complete cholesterol test can determine a person’s risk for heart disease. If levels are consistently normal, this test may only need to be performed every five years, advises the National Institutes of Health.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive Kidney Diseases says women should be screened regularly for prediabetes or diabetes beginning around age 45. Women can speak with their physicians to determine how often they should receive these screenings.

Cervical cytology The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists recommends routine pelvic examinations with cervical testing that includes Pap testing and HPV testing. Consult with an OB-GYN for testing frequency, which depends on age.

Mammogram Mammograms screen for breast cancer. Given the risk of false positives, debate continues as to how frequently women need these screenings. The most recent guidelines from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force says mammograms are recommended starting at age 50, and should occur every two years. The American Cancer Society advises starting at age 45 and having a mammogram annually through age 55.

Osteoporosis screenings Bone density can be measured starting at age 65 or earlier if a woman has a high fracture risk, states Regis College.

Skin examination The American Academy of Dermatology suggests speaking with a dermatologist about skin exams. Self-examinations should be routine, but dermatologists may recommend more formal tests to women who meet certain criteria.

n an age of voice mail and email, mobile phones and computerized banking, things change so fast that tradition is being lost in the jet wash of a jetset society. However, traditional values literally define Edward Jones, a nontraditional company that embraces new technology while still making house calls. That’s why Kristy Kirkland and Kathy Nossaman, Edward Jones Financial Advisors in Seguin, maintain their offices on River Street and S. Moss Street in town. That’s also why Kirkland and Nossaman stress long-term and diversified investments tailored to the individual needs of clients. Meeting face-to-face, understanding what is important to clients helps these Financial Advisors develop a personalized investment strategy geared towards each person’s unique, long-term goals. They offer investment solutions tailored to all financial needs and then monitor client’s progress to stay on track helping families organize, build, protect and transfer their wealth. In addition to the excellent client service received from their senior branch office administrators, clients benefit from thousands of people and advanced technology support in Edward Jones’ home office providing current and comprehensive guidance. At this year’s Women’s Expo, Kirkland and Nossaman will focus on the gender-related challenges and economic pressure facing today’s woman to help women achieve their financial goals. Despite some progress towards equality, the U.S. Census Bureau has found that full-time working women earn about 80% of what their male counterparts earn. Women also typically take more time away from the workforce than men, both to raise children and then, later in life, to take care of aging parents. These absences can

result in lost wages, lower Social Security benefits and fewer contributions to a retirement plan. Kirkland and Nossaman will help women who visit their booth look at their individual situation and create a plan to work towards their individual financial goals. Kristy Kirkland is a second generation Edward Jones Financial Advisor. Growing up in the business, she learned the importance of financial planning at a young age. Kristy saw the positive impact that a successful financial plan can make on families. Those early experiences helped her to develop a passion for helping others with their financial futures and led her to a career as a Financial Advisor. Kathy Nossaman joined Edward Jones as a financial advisor in 1994, opening the firm’s second branch office in Seguin. She’s a strong believer in being prepared. Whether it’s being ready for the next storm or packing the correctly for vacation or making sure there’s plenty of gas in the car, preparation can be the key to success. As an Edward Jones financial advisor, she believes it’s important to be prepared at any stage of financial life. In order for clients to be prepared, Kathy must understand what’s important and understand her client’s comfort with risk. So she invests her time understanding what’s important to her clients to help develop a personalized investment strategy geared towards each person’s unique, long-term goals. She offers investment solutions tailored to all financial needs and then helps each client monitor the progress of those investments to

help them stay on track. Over these past 25 years, she’s worked with hundreds of families, helping them build, and later, distribute wealth. In addition to serving clients, she has been active in civic affairs in Seguin for many years. She is past-chair of the Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce and Seguin Economic Development Corporation, past-president of Seguin Sunrise Rotary, Mid-Texas Symphony Board of Directors, MidTexas Symphony Guild and The Silver Center. She’s also served on the board of the Seguin Education Foundation and the Walnut Springs Committee. Currently Kathy is the secretary for the Seguin Area Community Foundation’s Board of Directors and chair of the symphony’s Debutante Committee. Her commitment to Seguin is strong. At Edward Jones, we’re focused on you. We know that working together we can help you develop a comprehensive financial plan that meets your needs.
