Double Negative Arch - 100A

Fall 2014

The concept of double negative is inspired by the photo collage of spaces in Wurster Hall at UC berkeley. By analysing the perspective zoning inside and outside the 2D graphic, the various of spaces are encouraging different smaller volumns to intersect and create third condition.

The Library Arch - 100A

Instructor: Alan Tse Fall 2014

The concept of the library is originated from the previous project, the double negative, taking the idea of the interacting relationship between solid and void. The chalenge of the design is how to work the concept into the exsiting site, which is provided as a narrow (119’x32‘) rectangular block between O’ live st and O’ Ferrell st in San Francisco.

The process of the design is to generate void spaces through serise of skewed and scaled volumes intersecting to create the main circulation of the library. The pile of different volumes respectively oriented toward the roof.

Good Food Project

The Mass Arch - 100B

Instructorďźš MIchelle Chang

Spring 2015

Concept

Organization

The concept of “The Mass good food project is inspired by cutting the building with walls to create volumetric variety within the urban space in SanFrancisco. The walls that generated by the cut line allows me to rotate and generates a relationship between solid and void spaces. Surrounding the central core space, those volumns rotate around to let the natural circulation occur as a spiral.

Urban Context

The Project is in San Francisco aiming to create a four stories high food related building. There are strict programs that need to applied to the concept form. By studying the rotating masses form, this project is to establish a programatic and systematic sequence by the central jagged walls.

Artificial Landscape

The Shadow Land Arch - 100C

Instructorďźš Jay Atherton

Fall 2015

The concept of the shadow land is inspired by the two layers of topography maps that creates in between spaces within. This project is focused on creating a unique water front experience at Berkeley marina.

The study of deforming these two layers starts to enable the project to gain spacial and system on controling different zones for the potential pavilion spaces. Eventually, this project creates the island condition that lets people to kayaking through the project and get under the shading of the hexegonal structure. The varying deepth of the structure also provides shading control throughout the entire site.
