There was an ambition to create garden on 2nd floor of the building that could be treated as exterior garden. Huge greenspace with at most 80ft high ceiling creates unique environment. Also from the outside, the garden glows through glass facade especially at night. And designing details are very challenging at where different materials meet and where different uses meet. Then 3D detail diagram was made for better solution and better communication

Coordination and Inspiration At below terrace, ceiling height is an issue for coordination of interior lighting and mechanical shaft offset. Then ceiling clearance is closely studied for coordination. The sketch is personal inspiration to the building at schemetic design stage.

As the floor plan offset, there should be reinforcement for steel post to stand. As the result, the 15th floor sturcture got deeper and even worse, all the mechincal elements have to offset below 15th floor slab. To maintain acceptable ceiling height for the 14th floor residential units, pensive coordination is needed.
Alterations or additions to this engineering document by an unlicensed person is a violation of Chapter 16, Title VIII, Article 145 ยง 7209.2 of the New York State Education Law.

Facade Design Progress Since the building is restricted with floor plans, most of the design comes from the facade. The idea is to create a gesture that opens to the waterfront by revealing lighter grid at a time. Ground level is almost transparent to give welcoming feeling to the public (Brooklyn Bridge Park). Before the final decision, there were different design approaches. The one on the right is one of the examples.

Modular Apartment Study The goal is to make modular apartment that each bay alterntes in and out to maximize view at the living room. The result is great that all apartments equally had 180 degree of veiw towards the water or city. However, since the modular layout determines the massing, it’s challenging to make modular apartment that would also work for ideal massing.

COMMUNICATING CITY - SKYSCRAPER ADDRESS: TYPE: STATUS: REMARK:
CANAL STREET AND BROADWAY Mixed-use tower Thesis Project - Sturcture design for skyscraper - Systemetic elevator design - A elevated Garden space as core combining splited towers, three blocks, underground transportation and culture THESIS: Throughout the history, the site was a gateway of immigrants, where various culture and ethnic groups were interacted. The immigrants had to accept the new environment to fit in. On the other hand, the city also has been changed reflecting the immagrant’s culture, visually and intellectually. This communication between the human and the city has created dynamic and intense environment overtime, and it will continue to build memory. The layer of memory, as the result, desires for the cultural exchange of various people, in understanding of “differences” of people, by learning and communicating with each other. The Communicating City is proposed to adop the past and future better by activating the communication between people and the city.
Manhattan Timeline Manhattan has changed overtime by different ethnicity. From the bottom of Manhattan, where maritime approach was easy, Dutch occupied the island little by little. However the land was never permanently belong to one specific ethnicity. It was the land of opportunity and many other immigrated for the same reason; equality and freedom of growth.

Structural Study The structure of skyscraper needs a strategy for its efficiency. The core is located where it works best for the sturcture and also for circulation. The steel truss holds core and columns together and one truss supports 20 floors each; 10 floors of compression and 10 floors of tension. The floor where truss is located becomes refuge floor for evacuation.
Communication Space The skysraper contains several meeting points. It begins with four legs standing independantly on different blocks. Around each legs, where they hit the ground, there are big plaza for public use. On each block, stairs are located to connect to the subway. When the legs meet in the air, a large platfrom is created. It’s green space where everything meet and split again into independent towers. Then, to light up below tower, each floor opens to the ground, even to the subway platform. These communication spaces become means to ease the serious congestion in the neighborhood.

271 PINE NOOK RD, DEERFIELD, MA Administration Office 4th Year Project - Percise model making by hand - Continuation at every corner - Emphasis on human experience THESIS: On the center of a solid horizontal wall, the entrance is under the shade. The gentle fold of the wall smoothly drags a visitor into the darkness. In between two walls, tension rises. Then he sees a gleam of light at the end of the deep and narrow path. Getting close to the light, one wall carefully splits up and allows the first glimpse of the interior. Walking in few more steps, a sudden light shines from the other side with the scent of newly scythed grass. A lightful and surrounded courtyard welcomes warmly. After enjoying the moment, the visitor finds big glass doors. Entering the doors, it’s a lobby. A fireplace warms the air by brighting up the natural wood of surrounding interior. Behind the fireplace is the view of placid wasters of the pond. The visitor takes a sit in front of the fireplace and be lost in thought. In few minutes, he turns around and passes through a door to admissions lobby. It’s the interior that was visible though cracks of the wall before. Looking around the lobby, he meets an eye with a counselor sitting inside one of three offices. The office door swings in and the counselor smiles with a background of beautiful playground.
Site Plan and Floor Plan One of the beauty of the campus is the nature. The landscape slopes gently for circulation for most of the time but then slopes steep for open view. The site has both view toward gentle pond and open sky. The building is shaped to seize those views but doesn’t interrupt the nature. Inside, the building provides different experience for the occupancy by revealing the view one by one. It’s part of the nature but also a filter to admire the nature even more.
LOCUST INVASION - URBAN PLANNING ADDRESS: TYPE: STATUS: REMARK:
TIMBUKTU, MALI Market Place 4th Year Project - Architectural solution against natural disaster - Human behavior as an inspiration of architectural function THESIS: Finishing off anything eatable on its way, the locust invasion became serious concern and fright of hunger to the natives of Mali. By designing the market place in the center of Timbuktu, Mali, the goal is to design a space that alleviate native’s anxiety. The market will provide a Shelter with Trap system to reduce the number of locusts and keep the crops safe. However, it’s almost impossible to prevent this natural disaster completely. But instead, this disaster can create another culture or a fest. This event can be celebrated and also used as meditation practices while controlling allowence of locusts in each space. When this condition is succesfully achieved, the moment of locust invasion can be an utopian experience where anyone is accapted.
Locust Travel Route and Human Reaction In Central Africa, Locust invasion is a serious natrual desaster. It hits the town annually but hard to predict when exactly. The question is if it is just another desaster or a phenomenon of great nature. Timbuktu, the chose site, is city of Mali. There are different types of people circulates through the city; the resident, the nomad, and the tourist. Where the circulation overlaps becomes the market place. The market place is built with four types of costructions that look alike to human reacation towards the locust invasion. One is a shelter or housing to hide from locust but also a living space in other time. Second is a vendor for merchants. It’s semi-open for human interaction but also to touch and experiece the massive natural phenomenon. Third is a trap to catch the locusts. To reduce the damage the traps are located outter most part of the market. The last is the tower. It’s a place for obervation of loucst movement and forcast. Also a observatory tower to feel the mother nature.

SAN GIOVANNI DI FIORENTINI, ROME, ITALY Gallery & Visitor Center 3rd Year Rome Project - Modern building in between historical city - Concrete shell full of light and floating objects THESIS: Walking along Via Giulia, one can encounter many surprises with hidden historic objects and contradictory spacial experiences. The intention of the gallery was to reflect this experience with respect of existing buildings. The heavy and solid exterior shell was designed to keep certain distance away from surrounding buildings. In contrast, the interior express infinite space by allowing lots of light and hanging objects.
Street with Sequence The street of rome is full of stories and surprises. Often the local architects had concerns for a new building that might destroy the historical atmosphere and preservations. The building tries to be a gentle, dull object that would quietly sit in between the historical buildings. However, it attracts people on the street with lights sparkling through some of the openings.

Through the openings, some light will sparkle to attract people from the opposite side of the street. Inside, there are art works hung from the ceiling around huge floating stairs.
