TRUE KNOWLEDGE | FAITH IN CHRIST | GODLY CHARACTER
Dear Parents
Message from The Head of School
I would like to offer my appreciation for the wonderful example you have set through your kind donation of secondhand goods for the Lentera Bagi Bangsa organisation. I trust that as we continue to put the words of Philippians 2:3 into practice by putting others before ourselves that we can build a culture of selflessness and willing sacrifice amongst our students. This is our calling as believers and follows in the footsteps of our Lord Jesus Christ.
With the addition of IGCSE on our campus comes the inclusion of exams. Our grade 9 and 10 teachers are busy preparing our students for their mock exams coming up in the final two weeks of term. I am sure they would all appreciate your prayers. As this is our last What’s On SPH PV for 2021, may I take this opportunity on behalf of all the teachers and staff to wish you and your family a blessed Christmas season and a joyous and prosperous New Year! We truly appreciate your continuing support.
Planning for Christmas activities is in full swing - music concerts, art competitions, end-of-term parties and Christmas Assembly all add to the excitement at this time of year in our school. Please check the calendar included for our Campus Christmas schedule.
Respectfully, Mr. Tim Heading Head of School

HYBRID LEARNING
2019-2021… What a ride! We have experienced bumps, hang-ups, highs and lows, and finally, an ecstatic feeling of being back on campus with students with us! It is with great joy and pleasure seeing our students and slowly get back to a new normal with our hybrid set-up. Nothing compares to seeing children expressing their joy and enthusiasm for seeing their friends and teachers together in school. We, teachers, care about everyone's health, not just physically but also in other aspects that involve the children's wellbeing. We have been cooped -up in our homes for almost two years. But now that we have found measures in knowing how to protect ourselves physically, it is about time to address children's social, mental, and emotional needs. Getting out of our homes carefully and interacting with others helps a lot in securing these areas. Grade 6 is a specific stage where they go through a lot of change and development. We hope to be of help as a school community to be there during this stage. We thank the parents for their trust in allowing our students to slowly get back into the "new normal" with us. Together we thrive!

We also thank the Lord for this opportunity He is giving us. We are blessed to work alongside the government and meticulous school admin to ensure learning and safety to be in their best place. Ms. Irma Grade 6 Teacher

HYBRID LEARNING
It has been a blessing to have our Grade 5 students on our campus. We have missed all the energy and life that the students bring to the classroom. The transition from home learning to hybrid learning has gone smoothly. We thank God for the technology that enables us to teach students at home and students in class simultaneously. The teachers of grade 5 hope that as more students join hybrid, we will be able to grow closer in relationship with our students and provide for them the academic support they need to be flourishing learners. We are looking forward to seeing more familiar faces on campus soon! Ms. Whitney Grade 5 Teacher

HYBRID LEARNING
Our hallways are filled with laughter and giggles that we’ve all missed so badly! We had a successful launch of our hybrid classes in grade 3 thanks to God and our amazing parents. Praying with our students in person and seeing their hard work has been such a blessing. It makes our hearts full whenever we hear the buzzing sounds of students inside our classrooms.
As we continue on with our hybrid procedures, we pray that God’s peace and joy will fill the hearts and minds of our students. Our prayer for our students is that God will be at the center of it all, for He is the source of our strength. We will continue to strive to establish a safe, flourishing, and lively learning environment at SPH as we proceed into more hybrid classes! May we all become truth seekers as we grow and learn together in the Lord.
It is truly inspiring how resilient our children are and how much they have managed to grow despite all of the challenges. We’re incredibly thankful for the support that we’ve received from our parents during the whole Home Learning & Hybrid process as well.
Ms. Christine Grade 3 teacher

CLASSROOM ACTIVITY
In the Biology class, Grade 10 & 9 engaged in hands-on experience by doing experiments. Grade 10 learned about the anatomy of organs from cow and pig lungs/trachea/heart dissection. They could see how the internal organs in the body were designed so perfectly for specific functions. On the other hand, Grade 9 students delved into the world of cells and observed the differences between plant and animal cells. Even in the smallest details like cells, we can see God's marvelous design. As our students develop their understanding living organisms, they also grow their appreciation of God, who is the Creator of all living things. Visit our Instagram

EVENT HIGHLIGHTS
Nov 10 - 12th, 2021
MS Virtual Retreat
How was God created? Why is there so much chaos in the world? What is my purpose in life?
As a teacher and cabin group facilitator, it was so exciting to see spiritual growth and learning happen as students listened in the sessions and engaged in small group discussions. However, the joy of seeing growth and learning was not only in these moments but throughout the retreat as students played games, participated in team building activities, chatted to one another, and enjoyed tasty treats (Popmie and smores to being among the favourites)!
These are big questions that our middle schoolers are seeking to answer, and we chose to use the annual middle school retreat as a time to “Seek the Truth” with them. Michael Rody, pastor of IES Church, joined the SPH PV students and teachers in unpacking some of these relevant topics which included seeking the truth of: Who I Am Who God Is Relationships Right and Wrong Social Media My Place in this World
Our prayer is that the seeds sown during these fun memorable times would bear fruit both now as students continue their learning at SPH but also for many more years to come as they make an impact in their communities and the world for the glory of God.

Hi Parents, Highest reported positive social-emotional situations: Importance of friends Feeling safe at school Getting along with parents Being happy with their lives Spending time on social media and feeling happy
My role as Chaplain has many facets, and one of my favorite roles this year has been being involved in strategically developing or Middle School. I have recently completed my Masters of Education with the National Institute for Christian Education and Alphacrucis College, in NSW. My thesis was School-Based SocialEmotional Supportive Programs in Middle School. As we re-organized our grade levels to establish a unique Middle School (MS), I evaluated what makes MS students thrive amidst the social-emotional difficulties that come during this period of life; being 12 years old is hard! Thank you so much to all the parents of students in grades 5-9 last year who participated in my study. It is now a joy for me to share some of the results with you. If you are interested, I would gladly share the complete report with you. But I hope you find some of the results interesting like I did.
Other studies show that social media actually decreases happiness. Make sure your Middle School children are at school and get to spend with their friends. Anxiety, depression, getting along with others, and addictions are identified by a majority of students and teachers as being significant for many MS students. Most parents who completed the survey do not see these areas as a struggle.
Engage in conversation about these topics with your kids, as it is an area that they see as being significant areas of struggle.
Top influences on the choices they make: Social, Feelings Students report valuing what parents think of their decisions, more than they value what their friends and teachers think.
Top 5 parts of SPH PV MS that students report have a positive social-emotional impact: Class chats Making choices Learning soft skills Events/competitions Retreat
Considering that they struggle with emotional regulation, MS students need trusted adults to help them think through their decisions. Encourage them when you see them making good decisions! Be careful not to stop them from making any poor decisions, as they do have to learn for themselves, but when they do, help them process through the repercussions.
Teachers are working hard to make sure that chats are a safe place, students have plenty of choices to make, are being equipped with soft skills, and have many fun experiences, even online!

STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council Lead, Serve, Represent
At least twice a week, these nine young leaders meet in order to plan how to best serve the school community. They are developing incredible skills in communication, collaborative planning, time management, and financial decisions as they plan activities that their peers will enjoy. This year, MSS students have enjoyed a movie night, baking day, speech competition, and more games and activities because of the hard work of these students. It has definitely been more difficult to plan events because of the pandemic, but these students have risen to the challenge! Keep an eye out for official merch that will be for sale, featuring designs from some of our own students. Check out our Instagram: @sphpluitstuco

Projectbased Learning? When your child says PBL (ProjectBased Learning) you might be wondering what it means to teach with projects. Do you know what projectbased learning means?
In SPH, this is the very heart of our approach to teaching. We believe that knowledge without application is meaningless learning. Why is this important to us?
PBL is when students work together to look up questions, generate creative ideas, and develop products that demonstrate what they've learned. An application of their knowledge in realworld situations.
Project-based learning inspires students to deep and lasting learning. It produces love for learning and provides a more personal approach in their learning journey.

Every grade in SPH Pluit Village develops a PBL in their class. These real-world problems are integrated in different subjects like Math, English, Bahasa Indonesia and even Mandarin. The main goal is to be able to create a product that shows their understanding and application of knowledge.
Project-based Learnin is deeply rooted in our ESO as well. We aim to develop students who are Confident Communicators, Flourishing Learners, Servant Leaders, World-Changers, and Truth Seekers. These ESOs are embedded in all of our projects which aids in becoming flourishing learners of life.
PBL can transform our student's learning. It prepares them to be problem solvers and teaches them how to tackle life's challenges — preparing students to be competent individuals.

LIBRARY CORNER
"Genrefication" We have recently "genrefied" the Senior Library collection at Pluit Village! What is genrefication? Genrefication is organizing a library by genre (or type of literature), more like a bookstore, to enable students to find materials more easily. By way of example, rather than The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien being shelved with all of the other fiction books under T for Tolkien, it's instead put in a section with the other Fantasy books. Students don't often know the names of the authors that write the types of books they're looking for, but they do know that they're interested in a mystery or historical fiction or science fiction or... The Senior Library collection is now arranged to help them best find what they're most interested in reading, and we hope it helps them a good book to read! Here are the "Book Genres" we are using:
