What's On in SPH Pluit Village | Vol. #5 March 2022

Message from the Head of School As Julie Winn from the Christian Deeper Learning organisation puts it: “That the knowledge and skills they (students) work hard to acquire can be applied to solve problems, make change, and cultivate Shalom (peace), even today.”

Hello parents, I would like to take a moment and pause to reflect on an aspect of SPH Pluit Village's holistic approach to education. Yes, we are an educational institution and so academics is of course important to us. We are doing well in this area, as recent strong results by our students in the ACSI Math and JNY Science competitions attest. But our holistic approach from a biblical perspective encompasses far more than just academics.

I am encouraged and excited as we enter this final term of learning and continue welcoming students back to onsite learning, some for the first time in two years. We have amazing students, teachers and parents. And have an amazing community. By the grace of God we can impact each other and those around us for His glory.

My desire is that as a community of learners, we can provide our students (your children) with the tools and desire to genuinely impact the world around them.

Respectfully, Tim Heading Head of School of SPH Pluit Village

STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations! For years, many of our Senior School students have showcased their mastery in debate and diplomacy skills by winning prestigious competitions, and one of them is Harvard Model Congress Asia (HMCA). This year, along with four students from SPH Lippo Village, Andrew Ribli earned positive commendations in HMCA 2022 achieving the Excellence in Bill Writing. To win these competitions, our students had to master diplomacy and public speaking skills, backed with vast knowledge in global issues and current events in the world. The major takeaways our students brought home were not the trophies, but the experience of working together with a group of young people with the same vision for a better world in the future. Once again, congratulations to Andrew!

Excellence in Bill Writing Harvard Model Congress Asia (HMCA) We are proud to share the news that our student, Keegan Tambrin, earned 1st place in Science Competition during Jakarta Nanyang School Cup 2022 last February. We also appreciate and are proud of the efforts of five Grade 9 students who also participated as they gave their best during this competition. Every time our students join a competition, they have the opportunity to hone their skills, broaden their knowledge, and develop themselves in character and attitude. The best reward is actually not by winning the competition itself, but by gaining valuable experience to grow to become better students. Once more, congratulations to Keegan!

STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT

Congratulations! Multiple Achievements in Math Olympics 2022 Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI) The Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), is an association of evangelical Christian schools that exists to strengthen Christian schools and equip Christian educators worldwide as they prepare students academically and inspire them to become devoted followers of Jesus Christ. As a member of ACSI, SPH has been actively involved in the Academic Programs & Events, one of which is Math Olympics which was held on last February 19th online.

The Math Olympics is a series of timed tests that are given in a series of rounds. Each student competes against other students in his or her grade and category. The areas of competition include arithmetic computation and mathematical reasoning. Students in Grades 3–8 from ACSI member schools participated in this competition. KINDY SECTION

What to expect from

Play-Based Learning?

At SPH Pluit Village, we approach learning through the pedagogy of play-based learning. What does this mean exactly I hear you ask? This is not a no work, no learn, approach; in fact, through play, children are encouraged to use their whole body and all their senses.

They are given situations where they must work together to solve problems and come up with new solutions. We set up our classrooms with a variety of activities, all focused on one topic. All the activities are set up in such a way that children are focused on exploring their Maths, English and Science skills.

KINDY SECTION

We want children to feel comfortable enough to ask questions, make mistakes and get messy. When we give children the space to explore on their own terms, they become more confident in asking why, how and what questions. These are important questions to ask as they grow older and learning becomes more formal. At SPH Pluit Village, we want children to have fun while learning. Every child is different and learns in a different way. In Kindy, we have the opportunity to make them aware of these different styles of learning (https://blog.mindvalley.com/typesof-learning-styles/) We then help them to develop their own style of learning without any pressures of performing. A NOTE FROM THE CHAPLAIN

Welcoming Easter

Rejoicing in the Good News

(Cr. Ms. Rachel Feather & her sister, 2000)

Easter

has been my favorite holiday for many years. Growing up, my family had many Easter traditions. One of them involved my parents waking me up with a video camcorder (remember those!?) focused on me and my sister. “He is risen!” they’d exclaim. And we’d reply with, “He is risen indeed!”

Following these words of greeting, my sister and I would search all over our house for our hidden Easter baskets, filled with caramel-filled chocolate eggs, Peeps, and jelly beans. We got to eat just one or two pieces before heading off to church in our new Easter dresses.

As teenagers, we did not appreciate being woken up with a camera in our faces and expected to speak coherent words, so our enthusiasm for this tradition faded.

These traditions aren’t why I love Easter. But they remind me of a couple important truths that ARE the reason. 10 sph.edu

A NOTE FROM THE CHAPLAIN

First is "Having Enthusiasm for What God Has Done". As we grow, we are expected to be cool, calm, and collected. And if we’re also tired, we may respond to good news begrudgingly, as I did while a teen. But this Easter, let’s be like children again! Let’s remember how exciting it is that Jesus died and rose again! Let’s jump up and run to tell someone, just as the first people who heard the news did. Second is "The Search" The book of Acts records Paul’s words, “His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us” (Acts 17:27), which echoes Jesus’ own words about seeking and finding Him (Matthew 7:8). Do you wake up each day, excited to search for what God has for you? Do you seek for Him? He is not far. He’s just waiting for you to search, so that He can reveal Himself to you.

(Cr. Ms. Rachel Feather & Her Sister, 2000)

As parents, you are the primary spiritual care-giver for your children. As Easter comes close, get excited with your kids! Search with them! Remember how our freedom from sin through Christ’s death and resurrection is such good, Good News. Blessings, Ms. Rachel Feather Chaplain at SPH Pluit Village

STUDENT COUNCIL

Talk Event

in18Event 2022

“Every day is a crossroad. Every day is a chance to change your life and our world for the better.” -Hillary Clinton.

Whether you are a student, parent, teenager, or adult, you are faced with decisions every day that may end up defining who you are, and your journey in life. Crossroads signify choice. These choices can be nerve-racking, but they are also liberating. They represent both the things unknown and pure potential. Although we are constantly presented with a set of decisions, it may be hard to settle upon one.

STUDENT COUNCIL

This drove us to create In18 (Inspiration in 18 Minutes) which is designed to shed light on topics like decision making and help inspire the future generation. This year, we invited Andini Effendi, a notable journalist and news anchor in Indonesia, Ashab Alkahfi, who made it into the Forbes 30 under 30 list, Kerenina Sunny, who represented Indonesia in the Miss World 2009, and Alya Zurayya who is an established influencer and singer. This event is led by Edward Franklin (Gr.10), with Kim Jung Hyun (Gr.9), Sophia Kuo (Gr.8), Annabelle Batherwin Huang (Gr.8) in the media team, and Brian Lee (Gr.9), Jessica Lee (Gr.9), and Georgia Zuri Adidarma (Gr. 6) in the logistics team. In18 have also partnered with Yayasan Tri Asih, an organization helping those with mental disabilities, and will donate 50% of all proceeds to them. INFO MOTION

Grade 3, 4, & 5

We Go Digital! World Health Organization (WHO) defines physical activity as any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that requires energy expenditure. Popular ways to be active include walking, cycling, sports, active play, and recreation.

This amazing app helps us know how physically active our students are in and out of school. And as they log their physical activity alongside with their emotional responses, we are able to support them in making physical activity a regular part of their lives. This is like having a physical activity log right at your fingertips with tons of cool features that both parents and teachers can use to promote an active lifestyle.

As of today, we are the 1st and ONLY school in Indonesia that uses miMove!

14 sph.edu

INFO MOTION

The Grades 3, 4 and 5 started using miMove last February and I want to celebrate our success with you by sharing some snippets of our physical activity. It is my hope that we continue to encourage and support our children in making physical activity part of their daily habit. Some key facts from WHO about physical activity: Physical activity ensures healthy growth and development in young people.

Physical activity has significant health benefits for hearts, bodies and minds. Physical activity contributes to preventing and managing noncommunicable diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. Physical activity enhances thinking, learning and judgement skills. Let's get healthy together. Mr. Oliver Caja P.E. Teacher at SPH Pluit Village
