News from Clubs and Societies
Atalanta was composed to celebrate the marriage, on 27 April 1736, of Frederick Prince of Wales to Princess Augusta of Saxe-Coburg. It is a masterpiece of Handel’s maturity, whose plot includes comedy, near-tragedy, disguise, deception, and a boar hunt. The stage director will be Victoria Newlyn, who assisted John Ramster in the CHO Ariodante in 2009. Victoria teaches at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and at the Royal Academy of Music, and has worked with other professional companies, including (recently) Opera North. The orchestra will be led by Kathryn Parry (SE 1983-86), who led the orchestra for the very first CHO opera, Rodelinda, in 1985.
