“The Selwyn Telephone Campaign is a great opportunity to speak to some really interesting people; it’s wonderful that we have a shared experience that we can discuss and laugh about.” “I definitely want to keep in touch with the College when I graduate and I think it’s really important to help others to do the same.” “Many of my friends depend solely upon financial support from the College. It enables the best and most academically able students to come to this great university, regardless of their background.” Cath, Selwyn Telephone Campaign Caller
Selwyn was founded in the great age of Victorian philanthropy, and it is that spirit of giving, handing the ladder down to the next generation, which has pervaded its 132 year history and helped to provide access to Cambridge for the brightest and best applicants, regardless of their background or financial circumstances.
Since October 2012 students have faced annual tuition fees of £9,000.
Cambridge’s supervision system is what sets the University apart from others, and costs Selwyn approximately £15,000 per student per year. The College therefore subsidises each student’s education by approximately £6000 per year.
Each new intake of students now faces annual costs of at least £16,000 (£9000 in fees and £7000 in living expenses) or nearly £50,000 over 3 years. This is a daunting sum to many and so the need to have a robust student support fund, is greater than ever. Your donation to the 2014 Telephone Campaign would help ease the financial burden on Selwyn Students and allow them to focus upon the unique combination of academic excellence and extra-curricular pursuits that makes a Cambridge education the best in the world. It may be a simple message but it is true: the cumulative power of many alumni giving small donations on a regular basis can make a big impact. If 20 alumni pledged just £20 a month over three years, with Gift Aid, it would be worth £18,000 to the College; almost half of what Selwyn is currently able to provide in Hardship Funding. A modest gift therefore can have a powerful effect. “All of us who are Alumni of this great University take pride in its outstanding success. However, the University and our College now operate in a global market where there is intense competition from well-funded universities – particularly in the US. In order that Selwyn may continue to excel academically and in sport and other activities, our College needs your help. I’m proud to help if it means that future generations might experience the benefits we enjoyed as Selwyn students and have continued to enjoy throughout our lives. Please join me in giving what you can.” John M Gorst (SE 1964) Selwyn Telephone Campaign Supporter
…who spoke to one of Selwyn’s current students in last year’s Telephone Campaign also chose to support the College financially. This allowed us to give out over £235,000 in Student Support last year to ensure that the best and brightest were able to come to Selwyn and flourish here.
