Appeal Update, Spring 2020

GOING UP!

A new Library & Auditorium

£12.35m raised of £12.6m

A new Library & Auditorium for Selwyn College APPEAL UPDATE, SPRING 2020. THANK YOU! In the six months since we last wrote to you, a great deal has happened with our project to build a new Library and Auditorium. Not least has been the emergence of more than 300 new donors who have given nearly half a million pounds in new gifts – thank you! This means that, in total, we now have just £250,000 still to find before reaching our target of £12.6m. As you will read, progress on the building has been equally impressive, and it is now a permanent feature on the Grange Road skyline. With much of winter now behind us, the building is on time, on budget and it’s full steam ahead for completion towards the end of this year.

Please help us to raise the final £250,000 by the end of March 2020 This is already the most successful public appeal in Selwyn’s history. We are aiming to complete our fundraising by the end of the current financial year – so those of you who wish to make a contribution have until 31 March 2020 – please join us. Although the deadline has passed to have an inscribed brick or paving stone, you can still have your name on a library or auditorium chair. All the information and forms that you need to make a donation of any size are included with this brochure, along with a reply envelope. All gifts can be spread over a number of years and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, we can usually claim Gift Aid as well.

82 individuals whose name will appear on the Principal Donors’ plaque (gifts of £10,000 or more)

How to make your gift Just complete the Inscription & Gift Form enclosed, and return to us in the envelope provided.

Thank you.

Built to last One of the most successful features of the first

two phases of Ann’s Court has been the use of

distinctive, high quality materials that embellish the construction and help provide continuity

and cohesion with the historic buildings of Old

Court. The Library and Auditorium, like phases

1 & 2 of Ann’s Court, is designed by Porphyrios

Associates, and will make extensive use of natural stone, brick and metalwork. The stone is sourced

from the same quarry used for the previous phases,

and the Saxon Red Multi bricks are handmade and specified so that the blend and bonding is

similar to the existing buildings. The metalwork

to the windows, doors and lanterns is in a bronze metallic finish. Overall, the scale and detailing

of the Library and Auditorium will appear

significantly larger than the existing residential buildings, making this new building a striking

and impressive addition to the Selwyn estate.

Sample panel under construction on-site showing the interaction between stone and brickwork

Luke Hughes ‘Downing’ library chair

High quality Library Furniture from Luke Hughes Selwyn’s new Library will have 24 hour access and be open for

business almost every day of the year. We needed to identify

furniture that would be modern, stylish and comfortable – but

robust enough to deal with extensive daily use for the next 50

years – and still be looking good. The designer and manufacturer that impressed us the most was Luke Hughes, the founder and

CEO of this specialist firm that bears his name. Luke’s team, based in Covent Garden, have designed and made furniture for libraries

in the UK and around the world. Remarkably, his furniture is in 60

Oxbridge colleges – so Selwyn will be in very good company. The ethos of the firm is simply to create a strong connection between

the architecture of the building and the furniture within – and

we believe the understated elegance of Luke Hughes’ designs will perfectly complement the architecture of Selwyn’s new Library.

We’re delighted to offer our supporters the chance to sponsor a Library Chair that will bear an engraved plaque with an

inscription of your choice (see enclosed forms for details). We

can’t promise Luke’s furniture will be there forever – but it will probably outlast most of us reading this.

HOW ALUMNI AND FRIENDS ARE HELPING The Donald Welbourn Reading Room Donald Welbourn was a distinguished Fellow of Selwyn College (1955–2009) and a key pioneer of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM). His work made a major contribution to the establishment of Cambridge University as the principal centre for CADCAM research and his teaching inspired generations of students. One of whom – Robin Jeffs (SE 1959), a Fellow Benefactor of Selwyn College – has made an extremely generous gift to the appeal, and requested that the second floor Library Reading Room be known as the Donald Welbourn Reading Room, in honour of his teacher’s exceptional contribution to Selwyn and to Cambridge.

ISHMAEL Bob Shannon (SE 1967) provided one of the more unusual brick inscriptions we received. It simply reads ISHMAEL. Bob explained, “I feel I owe a debt of gratitude to Herman Melville and Moby Dick, which is one of those works of fiction that can haunt you. The first three words, ‘Call me Ishmael’, are an arresting and formidable start to the novel, which goes on to deal with some of literature’s biggest themes. It seemed appropriate to have this name on a wall of the new Library…”

Congratulations to the 1991 Year Group for their fantastic achievement in raising £100,000 for the Paddy Smith & Tony Hitch 1991 Study Room. Members of Paddy’s family are very pleased and touched that the 1991 year has raised money in order to name a room in memory of Paddy and Tony.

“My decision to make a donation was driven by the information in the last appeal update regarding the Professor Ken Wallace Room. Ken was my PhD supervisor, and I would not have had an opportunity to study at Cambridge University and become a member of Selwyn without his help. I look forward to paying tribute to Ken in the room named after him one day in the near future. I am confident that the new library and auditorium project will provide a better environment for many generations.”
