Progress so far Since work began in April 2019 there’s been a
lot of activity on site, mostly in preparation for
the major building work that is now underway. Our contractors, Barnes Construction, have been very busy over the last few months. Existing services were diverted and obstructions removed and gradually the perimeter of the new building took shape with a concrete guide wall installed. This allowed the piling work to begin. Once the piles were completed in mid-July, works started on the foundation for the perimeter of the building, which involves sitting reinforced steel cages on top of the piles and concreting them into position. During August there was a lot of digging and excavation of soil from what will be the basement of the new building. Foundations were then formed on top of the piles within the building that will support the main structural columns and the lift shaft in the clock tower that will allow access to the library. Over the next few months, the aim will be to construct the basement floor and install all the drainage and waterproofing. The walls and columns that will support the floor of the auditorium will also be completed, bringing the work back to the surface and ready for the next stage‌

HOW ALUMNI AND FRIENDS ARE HELPING One of the pleasures of running an appeal for such an inspirational project is that it brings people together in unexpected ways. Here are just a few of the imaginative approaches that people have taken in order to celebrate the new building:
Paddy Smith & Tony Hitch 1991 Study Room
Enduring friendships are often formed within the year groups of a Cambridge college – so the premature loss of contemporaries is keenly felt. Members of the 1991 year group have chosen to collect funds so that a study room in the new library can bear, in perpetuity, the names of two such friends. First Women 1976–1979 Study Area
In 1976 Selwyn became one of the first Cambridge colleges to admit women. These pioneers were brilliant, resilient and helped to modernise Selwyn College and Cambridge in all sorts of ways. We are delighted that women from the first four years of Selwyn as a mixed college are getting together to try and raise £100,000 for the new library.
Professor Ken Wallace Room
Ken Wallace, who died in early 2018, was a valued member of the college for over 40 years as a director of studies, supervisor and tutor. He was an eminent engineer within the university’s engineering department. The Ken Wallace Room in the library will be named in his memory at the request of two anonymous alumni benefactors who were inspired by his example. Jonathan Burgon OBE (Land Economy, 1970) and family
Jo Burgon has decided to support the new library and auditorium, by recognising and remembering family members and relatives closely associated with the college, through inscriptions on chairs in the new building. New books donated by Nigel Newton (English, 1973), founder and chairman of Bloomsbury Publishing
Selwyn College Ladies First Lent Boat, 1979
Despite the many advantages of our digital age, analogue (or books and periodicals as we still call them) will be a feature of the new library for many decades to come. We were therefore delighted to be offered the chance to fill some of the new shelves and select 100 titles from the impressive catalogue of Bloomsbury Publishing.
