Dairy farmers are increasing efficiencies and driving genetic progress through ProfitMAX® consultations. The process begins with genetic and reproductive audits to identify challenges and opportunities within the herd. The resulting genetic strategies often include mating lower-value genetic merit herdmates to elite beef sires. While these genetic strategies can add a revenue source, the use of elite beef sires and appropriate rearing protocols for beef x dairy crossbred calves are both essential components to yield a quality end-product, as well as enhance their market value. That’s where Select Sires’ ProfitSOURCE program fits in the model.
ProfitSOURCE sires can significantly impact your herd’s bottom line by increasing the revenue from your lower genetic value females. Select Sires’ ProfitSOURCE sires have been selected for crossbreeding on Holsteins and Jerseys. These sires excel for calving ease, growth performance and carcass merit while offering elite fertility to maximize reproductive performance. The lineup of ProfitSOURCE sires includes elite terminal beef sires designed to meet specific genetic criteria as listed below.
Superior Genetics Yield Premium Prices Angus Sires • Top 30 percent of the breed for five of the six EPD traits related to growth and carcass merit: Weaning Weight (WW), Yearling Weight (YW), Carcass Weight (CW), Marbling (Marb.), Ribeye Area (RE) and $Angus x Holstein ($AxH) or $Angus x Jersey ($AxJ). • Top 55 percent of the breed for Calving Ease • Top 50 percent of the breed for Residual Average Daily Gain (RADG) • Bottom 70 percent of the breed for Yearling Height (YH) $Angus x Holstein Index and $Angus x Jersey Index: are bioeconomic indexes expressed in dollars per head. Each represents the expected average difference in future beef x dairy progeny value when compared to progeny of other Angus sires if randomly mated to Holstein or Jersey cows and the calves are exposed to the same environment. Simmental, Charolais and Limousin Sires • Top 50 percent of their respective breed for both Calving Ease and Terminal Index. The Terminal Index combines traits for growth, gain and end-product merit into one index. Using above-average sires for Terminal Index means your resulting calves will perform well and earn premiums at harvest. Using ProfitSOURCE sires gives you the best opportunity to realize additional revenues from calves who hit or exceed market targets.
Charolais - Terminal Sire Index (TSI): represents a dollar index per terminal progeny produced from a bull in the Charolais database, ranking them for profit potential. Limousin - Mainstream Terminal Index ($MTI): measures differences in expected profit per carcass produced on a mainstream grid (yield grade 1 or 2, Select to low-Choice quality grade, and no over- or under-weights or dark cutters).

SCR is a third-party summary of pregnancy check validated data, summarized and published by the Council on Dairy Cattle Breeding (CDCB). Our consumers demand a high-quality, high-grading product, which often ties to one of over 100 branded beef programs that include the word “Angus” in their name. Last year the American Angus Association (ASA) released two new bioeconomic indexes expressed in dollars per head. Each represents the expected average difference in future beef x dairy progeny value when compared to progeny of other Angus sires when randomly mated to Holstein ($AxH) or Jersey ($AxJ) cows with calves exposed to the same environment. Based on current data, Select Sires has a $20-$75 per head genetic advantage over other sources of beef x dairy genetics. That’s the difference between earning premiums versus discounts in the marketplace and on grids. The use of quality genetics has tangible value to our feedlot and packing partners. Feedlot owners and packers have educated themselves about genetics and recognize the value in Select Sires’ ProfitSOURCE program. They know when they see calves tagged with a red ProfitSOURCE tag they will be able to capture added value throughout the supply chain, which makes them more competitive in the marketplace. As commodity beef x dairy calves sired by low-priced or non-identified beef semen are fed and harvested, feed yards and packers have realized there can be a spread of more than $400 in the value of animals based on their genetics. A black hide will no longer be enough to make calves marketable. Documentation of what’s under the hide is becoming essential. partners Calf ranches, feedlots and packers interested in source-verified, high quality ProfitSOURCE calves have established partnerships with Select Sires. ProfitSOURCE partners may vary depending on geography, size of dairies, ownership arrangements, breed preferences, genetic criteria and end-product targets. Current Select Sires partners include:
TD Beef TD Beef has an exclusive partnership with Select Sires and requires the use of elite terminal bulls selected specifically for their program, as indicated in this brochure. Access to the TD Beef program is contingent upon calf pickup logistics and ranch availability in your region. Dairy producers will be offered a premium for day-old calves, but must agree to utilize Select Sires for all of their beef and dairy genetic inputs under the TD Beef program. Our list of TD-qualified sires is growing. Power Genetics Power Genetics is acquiring calves from dairies utilizing qualified SimAngus sires to breed purebred Holstein dairy cows. They transport them to calf ranches, on to Power Genetics’ feedyards and ultimately to Cargill Meat Solutions. Power Genetics’ long-term relationship with Cargill currently allows them to market 5,000 head per week.
By tagging beef x dairy calves with red ProfitSOURCE tags, breeders certify the calves are offspring of ProfitSOURCE-qualified sires that excel for terminal index in their respective breeds. These indexes combine traits for growth, daily gain and end-product carcass merit. Calves identified with the red ProfitSOURCE tags offer increased value to potential buyers based on their genetic merit. The Red ProfitSOURCE EID and dangle tags are available from Select Sires to identify qualifying calves. The tags will add value and legitimacy to the beef x dairy calves by capturing and tracking information from the dairy, calf ranch and feedyard to the packing plants. The ProfitSOURCE tag will offer traceability along the production chain that is not only appreciated, but requested by consumers and trading partners. At this time, Select Sires, through the ProfitSOURCE program offers the only red EID tags in the industry, making them unique from a visual detection standpoint. For a calf to qualify to be tagged with the RFID button, ProfitSOURCE-sired calves must meet established criteria for management and rearing and breeders must sign a ProfitSOURCE agreement to signify compliance.
Calf Care Program An important component of ProfitSOURCE is compliance with newborn calf-care guidelines to ensure offspring perform as expected throughout the supply chain.
