YOUR NEXT GENERATION THE BEST Thank you for taking the time to read the beef newsletter from Minnesota/ Select Sires Co-op, Inc. 2019 was a year of challenges for all of us. From late April snowstorms, to rain, rain and more rain, to early October snowstorms and a whole lot of MUD; I am pleased to say 2020 has only one direction to go, and that is UP! From a genetics perspective, I feel By Andrew Swanson as if our line-up of sire options is stronger than ever. Calves this year by Rainfall, Tahoe, Flat Top, Acclaim and Blackhawk are some of the standouts on the Angus front. From the Simmental breed, calves by Wide Range, Main Event, Red Moon, and Imperial look great!

And on the Red Angus side of things, calves by Atomic, Cinch, Spartacus, and Pacesetter are some of our customer’s favorites. Please order semen early as some bulls will be in short supply! Our team of professional Beef Sales Representatives (BSRs) is actively preparing to service you in 2020. I am very proud that we are stacked with talent to take on your breeding project. We have knowledgeable, local and dependable people who are passionate about helping YOU! We have breeding barns available and there is no project too big or too small. With 16 people whose sole role within our co-op is to service beef producers, we are ready to help increase your bottom line! Although 2019 was faced with challenges in regards to weather and markets, I am extremely optimistic for 2020. The law of averages tells me that we are due for a prosperous year ahead. PREVENTION AND TREATMENT

PRODUCTS FOR CALVING SEASON by Paul Tveten, Product Specialist

As calving season quickly approaches, I want to remind you about the premium products your Minnesota/Select Sires Coop, Inc. offers to support the top-notch genetics we provide. Whether it is prevention or treatment, we have the product offering to fit your needs! CONVERTTM Day One Gel: This trusted product has been the foundation of Select Sires’ calf care line for years! Agrarian Solution’s proprietary L-form bacteria is PROVEN to give your calves a healthier gut and a healthier start. Convert is available in boluses or gel. New this year, Convert Gel is available in individual 15cc tubes, as well as the multi-dose 60cc tubes. First Day Formula®: Hands down, the best colostrum replacer on the market - the mixability is second to none! Mix one packet (150 IgG’s) into 2 quarts of warm water. First Day Formula can also be used as a supplement to maternal colostrum, just mix half of the package into warm water. Accel RS: In the event you have to treat a

dehydrated calf, Accel RS is the best option because it functions as a Recovery Solution (RS). This electrolyte has a plasma-based energy source which aids in gut repair and reduces peak diarrhea volume. A full treatment is 3 doses fed between milk feedings. Accel RS is available in individual packs, a 6 lb pail, or a 25 lb bag. Tri-Purify and Tri-Start Jr: If you run into a case of scours, the 1-2 punch of these two boluses will help your calf tremendously! Tri Purify is a highly concentrated oregano-based bolus that is formulated to flush out the lower GI tract. Then, Tri Start Jr is given to repopulate the gut with good bacteria essential for health. Give the two boluses 12 hours apart. We also offer a full line of premium milk replacers, calf coats, and calf housing options. Look to Select Sires to help you through your next calving season!

Leading off our bull section this year is 14AN502 TAHOE as a bull who exceeds for calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass traits. As an up and coming bull who we call a definite foot improver, look for Tahoe progeny around the region to be functional with some shape and substance to them.

A must have on your short list of calving ease and maternal sires is 7AN466 RAINFALL. One of the most sought after bulls in our lineup, Rainfall is an excellent calving ease and high marbling option for use in both registered and commercial programs. A Charlo son, out of the #1 producing cow at SAV, Rainfall combines dominating phenotype, superior confirmation and outlier thickness, muscle shape, capacity and pounds in a calving ease package. Rainfall progeny are of extremely high customer satisfaction, and will lead our sales in 2020. One of our most exciting new additions to our lineup comes from the Frey program in North Dakota. 14AN553 COWBOY LOGIC. Cowboy Logic is a Cowboy Up son who was the lead off bull in Frey’s Carload in 2019. Cowboy Logic has style, muscle, power, and performance in a calving ease package. One of the truly exciting, high phenotype, spread bulls in our lineup. 7AN463 PLAYBOOK. A 1682 son with more frame; Playbook is stout, smooth and big-middled with a lot of base width and muscle expression. Expect calves sired by Playbook to have excellent phenotype and performance.

Out of one of the hottest cows in the Angus breed, 7AN443 BRONC is an expressive muscled, masculine young sire with a

huge top and bold rib shape. He is level in design and has tremendous base width. Bronc exceeds his sire for frame size and he captures your attention from every angle. A proven calving ease bull that is now priced right for the commercial cattleman. A rock star in the commercial world, 7AN368 COMRADE shows excellent fertility, proven calving ease and produces super daughters. He ranks high for docility and provides added benefits for carcass merit. Proven to deliver quality offspring from a wide spectrum of cattle types, Comrade is a great option to keep mature size under control. Flawless in structure and phenotype, 7AN451 FLAT TOP covers all the bases for EPDs and excels for RE and $W. Black Granite’s stoutest and best phenotype son in a double digit calving ease package, Flat Top has maternal strength interwoven in his stellar pedigree. His dam consistently transmits exceptional phenotype while backing it up with production records. The Flat Top calves are longer bodied and have the look! High customer satisfaction here. If you like extra frame and growth, look no further than 14AN461 ACCLAIM. This bull has sired some great ones. With a $B in the top 1% of the Angus breed, look for Acclaim to add performance, frame, and pounds to your next calf crop. An outcross calving ease sire with exceptional foot and leg structure, 7AN419 REMEDY continues to build an EPD profile that defies the odds. He combines calving ease with early rapid growth in one special entity. He sires fault free, easy keeping, quiet, high quality replacement females. Because his pedigree is stacked with high maternal sires that have stood the test of time, you can expect Remedy daughters to stay in the herd for many years.

Known for low birth weight and high growth, 7AN388 NIAGARA adds base width and a super rib design to make attractive, big-bodied offspring. Niagara has a pedigree that is built on proven, good uddered “cowmaker” sires. He is one of the most balanced trait sires in the breed and is a high customer-satisfaction bull. A unique son of Cash with a distinct blend of performance and phenotype, 7AN432 BANKROLL offers exciting figures for below average birth weight and rapid early growth. Use Bankroll with confidence to add style and look to your next calf crop. 7AN511 SPUR was brought in as a semi proven calving ease bull for our area. Use Spur as a calving ease bull with some data behind him as a low birth weight, high carcass weight and high marbling sire. 7AN474 BLACKHAWK comes to us from the Connealy program in Nebraska. Blackhawk has been used to add growth and performance. With a $W score and a $B score in the top 2% of the breed, use Blackhawk to add value to your next calf crop. Last but certainly not least from our Angus lineup comes 7AN467 SUPERCHARGER. One of Recharge’s best sons, Supercharger is as long sided as you can dream of. He has mass and base width with a lot of muscle shape. If you have a chance to see this bull in person you will be impressed. Supercharger will add performance and pounds to your program. 14AR2075 REBEL offers a great blend of calving ease, calf vigor, strong performance, maternal strength and marbling. He excels in all the economically relevant traits for beef production while creating functional cattle with exceptional doability, disposition, and feet.

Among an ultra-elite group of proven sires ranking near the top of the breed for both HerdBuilder and GridMaster Indexes, 7AR75 PACESETTER has a unique combination of elite carcass merit and excellent maternal value. He blends high marbling with high stayability while maintaining calving ease and excellent post weaning growth. His progeny are moderate framed with added depth, spring of rib and excellent fleshing ability. If you are looking for a calving ease outcross to P707, look no farther than 7AR79 LIBERTY. As a bull with balanced EPDs, expect Liberty to add base width, muscle shape, and stoutness to his calves. 294AR338 RACER is a powerful red angus bull who excels in terms of overall mass, depth of rib, and stoutness. Having won Champion Red Angus bull at the Canadian Western Agribition, use Racer to sire your next great one. Quickly becoming a household name in SimAngus™ sires, 7SM80 WIDE RANGE is proven to sire beautiful, deep-bodied and wide-based females. He provides substantial performance benefits while keeping frame size in check. He is also homozygous black and homozygous polled. Ranking in the top 1% of the breed for API and TI, 7SM93 BIG TIMBER is a calving ease purebred that needs serious consideration. Big Timer is backed by a super cow who is very correct and keeps a nice udder. His EPDs rank him in the top 2% for calving ease and top 10% for birth weight. The growth and power red bull, 7SM87 HOMETOWN hails from C Diamond Inc. (CDI), North Dakota. This purebred red Simmental (homozygous polled) has a pedigree and very solid EPD package that provides flexibility to use him on registered or commercial cows.

Imperial is a very exciting Red purebred Simmental who indexes excellent across the board and boasts a spring time API of 178. Imperial is also in the top 1% for maternal calving ease and marbling. With calving ease, growth and maternal traits like that, look for Imperial to be used hard this spring and summer. From the Behm program in North Dakota comes 7HP120 CUDA. This bull has an excellent combination of calving ease, growth, maternal and carcass merit. This bull is a powerful, stout, rug-

ged, short-marked sire emerging as a true breed leader. 14HP1037 SMALL TOWN KID is a Hereford sire that is full of volume, depth and capacity. Here is a bull with excellent phenotype that maintains his frame score while still allowing his calves to grow. With Small Town Kid’s look, as well as his growth and carcass EPDs, he checks a lot of boxes. 7CH96 AFFINITY is one of the most phenotypically impressive Charolais bulls to enter the AI industry in recent years. Backed by multiple generations of excellent uddered cows, expect Affinity to add depth, muscle, width and scrotal to your next calf crop.
