11TH ANNUAL CHANGE-MAKERS BALL NEW YORK PIER SIXTY, CHELSEA PIERS NOVEMBER 5, 2021

Africa’s Rural Communities Have Our Support Difficult challenges require a long-term approach. Enstar is proud to support Self Help Africa in its work to end poverty in rural African communities. By helping farmers gain access to agriculture education, business skills and micro finance, local people will have better opportunities to increase their incomes, create environmentally sustainable crops and engage with a reliable route to market.

For many families, where farming is the occupation of choice, the impact of global warming can be devastating. African farms are vulnerable to high temperatures, fluctuations in rainfall and variable yields which dramatically impact the daily lives of local people. Enstar stands behind Self Help Africa as it works alongside the people of rural Africa to improve their future. As a global business, with a global care for people, it’s a privilege for us to sponsor Self Help Africa and we congratulate everyone involved in this important programme.

Enstar is a leading global insurance group that delivers innovative insurance solutions through our network of group companies. Spanning a 27+ year history of operating in the run-off space, we leverage our ability to thoroughly understand risks and liabilities to create ideal legacy solutions for our partners. T

he two years since our last in-person New York Change-Maker’s Ball have been tough for everyone.

Africa’s experience during the pandemic has been so different to that of the US. There were lower initial rates of infection and deaths but the very low vaccination rates across Africa have left it in a continuing vulnerable position. Travel continues to be restricted, supply chains have been interrupted and farmers – who often rely on more lucrative cross-border trade to make ends meet – face continued hardship. We’ve adapted to the challenges of the last two years, just as most US businesses have changed their ways of working too. More of our work now takes place virtually, of course, but we’ve also leaned in on our microfinance and small business grant work, enabling entrepreneurs across the continent to invest in their plans and their futures.

And, at a time of great challenges, we took on an extra one with the acquisition in mid-2021 of another non-profit, United Purpose, whose programs across seven countries have always impressed us. That’s why this event is more important now than in 2019 – we’ve expanded our footprint in the last 24 months, increasing the impact of our work significantly. With your help, we’re determined to continue investing in the women and men who can power its future. From to Burkina Faso to Zambia (and now Bangladesh too!), you can hear the words ‘asante’, ‘merci’, ‘ameseginalehu’ and ‘natotela’. On behalf of the hundreds of thousands of people who will engage with Self Help Africa’s work across Africa in the next 12 months, thank you.

November 5, 2021 Dear Friends: It is a pleasure to welcome everyone as Self Help Africa hosts its 11th Annual Change-Maker’s Ball. Since its establishment, Self Help Africa has strengthened rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa through its programs that uplift small-scale farmers and women entrepreneurs, improve food security, advance gender equality, and promote sustainable economic development. Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, it has also advocated for vaccine equity and raised awareness about how to curb the spread of the virus in the countries it serves. Tonight’s Change-Maker’s Ball will unite diverse New Yorkers to advance this organization’s important mission, and it also signifies our city’s

resiliency and the tremendous progress we have made in our efforts to reopen safely. I applaud everyone gathered for their efforts to fight poverty and hunger and invest in the future of Africa. Together, we will come back from this crisis and increase opportunity in the five boroughs and beyond. On behalf of the City of New York, please accept my best wishes for a wonderful evening and continued success.. Sincerely, Bill de Blasio Mayor

SPECIAL PROJECT

MALAWI SAVINGS & LOANS

M

alawi is consistently ranked by the World Bank as one of the ten poorest countries in the world.

Think about all you can do with a bank account. You can save, manage your budget, create a buffer for emergencies, or take a loan to begin to build a business. Unfortunately, banks are out of reach for many poor people in developing countries. In Malawi, an estimated 75% of people do not have access to formal banking services - and a large number of those are women.

in the world. We serve rural communities only, many of whom struggle to feed their families and fulfill their strong desire to send their children to school. Many of them are exploited when harvesting season comes because of their low literacy levels and lack of influence over selling prices. At least 24% of women clients have no formal education at all while a further 66% have elementary school education only.

“This is critical support, helping impoverished communities across Malawi to start or grow their small businesses”

Our microfinance subsidiary in Malawi, known as Cumo, provides small loans and savings accounts to over 80,000 people, 83% of them women. Loans range in size from $50 to $3,000, and are based on simple business plans submitted by applicants.

Cumo takes no collateral for these loans. This means that there are no financial barriers to receiving a loan from it, allowing us to reach some of the poorest women

This is critical support, helping impoverished communities across Malawi to start or grow their small businesses, focused on individual entrepreneurs who have ideas and energy but little to no capital. To grow our microfinance portfolio, Cumo needs your support – to reach further into rural Malawi, to the thousands of communities who have no access to financial services. Will you support a rural entrepreneur in Africa this year?

LAVENDER & JUNIPER Sipped neat or with ice the Lavender & Juniper gin is a beautiful deep blue; add a splash of acid such as tonic or lemon and it changes to bright pink. Heather, lavender and chamomile add to the magic by playing off the citrusy bergamot and sweet almond, finishing surprisingly dry on the palate.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Artist & muralist Lawren Alice is best known for creating vibrant, freehand, flourish pattern designs that are slowly taking over both private and public wall space in her home city of Philadelphia. Finding inspiration in color palettes painted on Pakistani art trucks, compositional elements found in Norwegian rosemaling, and drippy background layers present in aerosol and graffiti work, Alice’s free-flow style perfectly couples traditional decorative arts with a fresh modern twist that feels both refreshing and balanced. Note: labels peel off easily leaving you with a beautiful reusable art bottle
