Graphic Novels

Visual Narratives

Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. In our tenth anniversary year, we are proud to continue bringing readers graphic novels and visual narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire and inform. Published in September, Reinhard Kleist’s long-awaited graphic biography, Nick Cave: Mercy on Me, is an enthralling portrait of an intense, uncompromising and hypnotic artist. September also sees the release of 2017’s most hotly anticipated graphic memoir. Spinning is the first long-form autobiographical work by one of the USA’s brightest young talents, Tillie Walden, who tells the story of a childhood spent in the twisted, insular world of competitive figure skating. Mike Medaglia’s new book, One Year Wiser: An Illustrated Guide to Mindfulness, is released in October. A timely addition to his bestselling series, this beautifully illustrated graphic guide will help readers harness the power of meditation, gratitude and loving kindness, and master the art of living mindfully. Halloween sees the release of the second volume of Leah Moore and John Reppion’s Ghost Stories of an Antiquary, which collects graphic adaptations of four more spine-chilling stories by M.R. James, including the classic “Oh, Whistle, And I’ll Come To You, My Lad”. Finally, in October, two more extraordinary graphic novels in translation: Magritte: This is Not a Biography by Vincent Zabus and Thomas Campi, a new addition to our Art Masters series, takes a playful look at the life of René Magritte and The Smell of Starving Boys, a collaboration between the writer Loo Hui Phang and comics artist Frederik Peeters, transports us to the 19th-century American West.

territory that might one day support a new civilisation. But this is no virgin land. As the frontiersmen move west, it becomes clear that the expedition won’t go unchallenged. Stingley has led them into a hostile region: the native Comanches’ last bastion of resistance. In a spectacular landscape, under the looming threat of attack, the boundaries between the civilised and natural worlds dissolve. As social conventions disappear and personal inhibitions go into retreat, an intimate relationship develops between Oscar and Milton. An intense Western, The Smell of Starving Boys explores the clash between two worlds: one defined by rationality and technology, the other by shamanism and nature.

Loo Hui Phang writes for comics, theatre and film. Born in Laos, she grew up in Normandy. Frederik Peeters is the author of Blue Pills, Pachyderme and Aama, among other books. He lives in Geneva.

or ten years, figure skating was Tillie Walden’s life. She woke before dawn for morning lessons,

went straight to group practice after school and spent weekends competing in glitter and tights. It was a central

piece of her identity, her safe haven from the stress of school, bullies and family. But over time, as she switched schools, got into art and fell in love with her first girlfriend, she began to question how the closed-minded world of figure skating fit in with the rest of her life. Poignant and captivating, award-winning comics artist Tillie Walden’s powerful graphic memoir captures what it’s like to come of age, come out and come to terms with leaving behind everything you used to know.

Based on real events, Fionnuala Doran’s absorbing graphic novel explores Casement’s startling downfall, from his efforts to secure German backing for an independent Ireland to his disastrous return home and subsequent arrest. Condemned as a revolutionary, his sexuality laid bare by the circulation of his private journals, Casement’s fate was all but sealed. And yet, on his final day in the courtroom, he delivered a brave, impassioned speech that would resonate long after his death.

While Tom drinks to forget the troubles of his earthly life, Nick is forced to confront a past that is not his own: a childhood scarred by the small wars waged by an abusive father – and by the events that brought them to a close. When Nick enters the panicked silence of the Abbey, a fortress for the rich and unstable, his sister guards him from the visiting Tom Banbury.
