SelfMadeHero Autumn 2015

Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. We are proud to bring readers visual narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire and inform. This autumn marks the arrival of a long-awaited new graphic novel from one of America’s best-loved independent comics artists, Peter Kuper. Ruins is a story of love, politics and adventure, and a stunning portrait of contemporary Mexico. After the success of Seconds by Bryan Lee O’Malley and The Sculptor by Scott McCloud, we’re delighted to be bringing the work of another high-profile US creator to UK readers. Autumn also sees the release of One Year Wiser, a book of 365 illustrated meditations from comics artist and Huffington Post blogger Mike Medaglia; the gripping final volume of Frederik Peeters’ awardwinning science fiction series, Aama; and Klaxon, a gloriously bizarre horror story by Si Spencer and DIX. SelfMadeHero’s Graphic Freud series continues in October with Hysteria, Richard Appignanesi and Oscar Zarate’s graphic account of the psychoanalyst’s most famous case study, and in November there’s a new addition to our non-fiction list: Filmish by Edward Ross, a masterful graphic guide to the theory underlying our favourite films.

dinburgh-based cartoonist Edward Ross uses comics to illuminate the ideas behind our

favourite films. In Filmish, Ross’s cartoon alter-ego

guides readers through the annals of cinematic history, introducing us to some of the strange and fascinating concepts at work in the movies. Each chapter focuses on a particular theme – the body, architecture, language – and explores an eclectic mix of cinematic triumphs, from A Trip to the Moon to Aliens. Sitting within the tradition of bestselling non-fiction graphic novels like Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics and the Introducing… series, Filmish tackles serious issues – sexuality, race, censorship, propaganda – with authority and wit, throwing new light on some of the greatest films ever made. Edward Ross is a comic book artist, writer and illustrator. Working alongside Dr James Hall, he has created many science-themed comics for universities, museums, charities and research bodies. n Scarper Lee’s world, parents don’t make children

– children make parents. Scarper’s father is his pride

and joy, a wind-powered brass construction with a billowing sail. His mother is a Bakelite hairdryer. In this world, it rains knives and household appliances have souls. There are no birthdays – only deathdays.

Scarper knows he has just three weeks to live. As

his deathday approaches, he is forced from his routine and strikes out into the unknown – where friendships are tested and authority challenged. This unsettling and fiercely original coming-of-age story traces a journey through a bizarre, distorted teenage landscape: a world not so different from our own.
