SelfMadeHero 2015
Our mission at SelfMadeHero is simple: to publish ground-breaking and beautiful work by authors and artists from across the globe, from the quirky and humorous to the political and profound. SelfMadeHero is at the heart of the British comics scene which, over the last few years, has won favor among readers, reviewers and prize judges in North America. Last year saw multiple Eisner Award nominations for Rob Davis’s The Motherless Oven and Judith Vanistendael’s When David Lost His Voice. There were Eisner nominations, too, for The Castle by David Zane Mairowitz and Jaromír 99 and The (True!) History of Art by Sylvain Coissard and Alexis Lemoine, while Reinhard Kleist’s The Boxer was shortlisted for an Ignatz Award. Spring 2015 sees the release of Vincent by Barbara Stok and Pablo by Julie Birmant and Clément Oubrerie, the first two books in SelfMadeHero’s Art Masters series, a collection of graphic novel biographies of the world’s great artists; I. N. J. Culbard’s adaptation of Robert W. Chambers’ The King in Yellow, a hugely influential book that is enjoying a renaissance as a result of the hit HBO show True Detective; and the third book in Frederik Peeters’ award-winning science fiction series Aama, which concludes in September with the publication of volume four, You Will Be Glorious, My Daughter. September also marks the arrival of Peter Kuper’s long-awaited new graphic novel, Ruins – a story of love, politics, and adventure, and a stunning portrait of contemporary Mexico. Other highlights from the fall include Filmish, a visual guide to the history of cinema by cartoonist Edward Ross, and One Year Wiser, a wonderful gift book containing words of wisdom from thinkers both ancient and modern, illustrated by Huffington Post blogger Mike Medaglia.

Sitting within the tradition of bestselling non-fiction graphic novels like Scott McCloud’s Understanding Comics, Filmish tackles serious issues – sexuality, race, censorship, propaganda – with authority and wit, throwing new light on some of the greatest movies ever made. Edward Ross is a comic book artist, writer and illustrator. Working alongside Dr James Hall, he has created many science-themed comics for universities, museums, charities, and research bodies.
