SelfMadeHero Graphic Novels

Essential Graphic Novels 2016 Visual Narratives

2017 marks SelfMadeHero’s tenth anniversary. A list that began with the Manga Shakespeare series has, over the last decade, developed into a rich collection of books that are a testament to the richness and diversity of today’s graphic novel landscape. This year’s list encapsulates SelfMadeHero’s mission: to publish graphic novels and visual narratives that provoke, entertain, inspire, and inform. 2017 begins with the release of two extraordinary graphic biographies: Néjib’s Haddon Hall: When David Invented Bowie documents David Bowie’s formative years as a musician, while Catel Muller and José-Louis Bocquet’s Josephine Baker tells the astonishing story of the pioneering dancer and African-American darling of the Roaring Twenties. Reinhard Kleist’s long-awaited Nick Cave: Mercy on Me, released in the fall, is an enthralling portrait of an intense, uncompromising, and hypnotic artist. Our Art Masters series continues with Gauguin: The Other World, Fabrizio Dori’s portrait of a fearless artist and flawed human being, and Magritte: This is Not a Biography, in which Vincent Zabus and Thomas Campi take a playful look at the life of the surrealist painter René Magritte. Two remarkable debut graphic novels join our list of fiction: Herman by Trade by Chris W. Kim, a thought-provoking tale about a street cleaner whose talents as an illusionist find an outlet on the big screen, and Outburst, a compelling coming-of-age story by Pieter Coudyzer. Deborah Levy, the Booker Prize-shortlisted author of Hot Milk, teams up with artist Andrzej Klimowski on the unforgettable, off-kilter Stardust Nation, and fact and fiction collide in Paolo Bacilieri’s FUN, at once a breathtakingly inventive literary crime story and a meticulously researched history of the crossword puzzle.

territory that might one day support a new civilization. But this is no virgin land. As the frontiersmen move west, it becomes clear that the expedition won’t go unchallenged. Stingley has led them into a hostile region: the native Comanches’ last bastion of resistance. In a spectacular landscape, under the looming threat of attack, the boundaries between the civilized and natural worlds dissolve. As social conventions disappear and personal inhibitions go into retreat, an intimate relationship develops between Oscar and Milton. An intense Western, The Smell of Starving Boys explores the clash between two worlds: one defined by rationality and technology, the other by shamanism and nature.
