Lovecraft for I.N.J. Culbard as he adapts and illustrates The Shadow Out of Time; and an atmospheric adaptation of Kafka’s The Castle, by David Zane Mairowitz and Czech artist Jaromír 99. David Zane Mairowitz & JaromÍr 99

The Castle Kafka’s seminal work on isolation, alienation, and bureaucracy The protagonist, known only as K., arrives in a mountain village buried under deep snows in the middle of winter, dominated by a looming castle above it, shrouded in mist. Attempting to gain contact with the inhabitants of the castle, the officials who run the bureaucracy governing the village, K. repeatedly finds himself misunderstanding and transgressing the multitude of confusing and contradictory rules and regulations that dictate the daily life of the villagers. Kafka’s atmospheric and brooding tale of extreme bureaucracy explores themes of solitude, isolation, loss, and companionship.

david hine & mark Stafford

The Man Who Laughs A grisly tale of love, death, and feudalism Victor Hugo’s scathing indictment of the injustice and inequality within Britain’s political system tells a story of abduction, mutilation, loss, and prejudice. The narrative follows Gwynplaine, the two-yearold heir to a rebel lord, who is abducted upon the orders of a vindictive monarch, who has him mutilated (to produce a permanent, grisly smile), then abandoned. After years of living frugally he is re-introduced to the aristocratic life, and resolves to become the voice of the voiceless, whether he is heard or not.

David Hine has worked in comics since the 1980s, and has written for DC (Batman: Detective Comics, Arkham Unhinged; Deathstroke: Faces of Evil), Marvel (Spider-man Noir, X-Men, Silent War), 2000 AD (Tao De Moto). It was during his work on Batman that he discovered that the original appearance of the Joker was based upon Gwynplaine’s likeness in the 1928 film adaptation of The Man Who Laughs. Mark Stafford is a cartoonist-in-residence at the Cartoon Museum. He has collaborated with Bryan Talbot on the second Cherubs! graphic novel, painting dead hillbillies and writing about cinema for Electric Sheep magazine. Stafford previously collaborated with Hine on “The Colour Out of Space” for SelfMadeHero’s critically acclaimed Lovecraft Anthology Vol. I. 4

We Won’t See Auschwitz A journey through Poland to discover what it means to be Jewish When his grandmother dies, Jérémie and his elder brother wanted to learn more about their family’s Polish roots. They decide not to do the Holocaust trail... they won’t see Auschwitz. Through their journey, they discover a country that is still affected by its past. The brothers talk to lots of people, including progressive rabbis and young Jewish Orthodox artists. Using their grandmother’s stories, they piece together the threads of their family history. Leopold Maurer, TRanslated by Helen MacFarlane

Miller & Pynchon An odd couple discuss the meaning of life, love, and werewolves What begins with such seemingly achievable tasks as drawing a line of demarcation becomes something far greater for our two comical heroes, Miller and Pynchon. They embark on a more ambitious task – accurately measuring the Transit of Venus, through which the distance between the Earth and the Sun is calculated. As the magnitude of this new task dawns on them, so too does a creeping sense of their own insignificance. With each new measurement, the pair become increasingly interested in the direction their lives are taking. While the melancholic Pynchon ponders the death of his beloved wife, the more pragmatic Miller seems hell-bent on a course of escapism through sexual debauchery.

Leopold Maurer was born in Vienna in 1969. He studied sociology at the University of Vienna and then went on to study illustration at the Academy of Arts and Design, Vienna. Since 1998 he has worked in a wide range of media, including animation, illustration, and comics. He lives and works in Vienna.

The Nao of Brown A young woman’s struggle with love, life, and murderous thoughts Nao Brown suffers from OCD, but not the handwashing, overly tidy type that people often jokingly refer to. Nao suffers from violent morbid obsessions, while her compulsions take the form of unseen mental rituals. Working part-time in a “designer” vinyl toy shop, while struggling to get her own illustration career off the ground, she’s still searching for that elusive love – the perfect love. And in meeting the man of her dreams, she realizes… dreams can be quite weird. Nao’s meditation practice is an attempt to quieten her mind and open her heart, and it’s through this that she comes to understand that things aren’t so black and white after all. In fact, they’re much more... brown.

Li Kunwu & Philippe Otié, translated by Edward Gauvin

A Chinese Life A visionary account of life in the People’s Republic of China This remarkable book traces a personal journey through modern history, from the creation of the People’s Republic of China in 1949 to the present day. Working in close collaboration with writer Philippe Ôtié, artist Li Kunwu has created a timely and compelling memoir of state and self that is at once epic and intimate, comic and tragic, in scope. Already a modern classic, this distinctively stylish masterpiece of design chronicles the rise and legacy of Chairman Mao Zedong and his sweeping, often cataclysmic vision for the most populous country on the planet. Li Kunwu witnessed this extraordinary period at first hand, and here intertwines the experiences of his family and neighbours, his friends and rivals, his colleagues and compatriots, in a visionary account of “interesting times”.

Li Kunwu (co-writer, illustrator) has had over 30 comics works published as a State artist in China.

Edited by Oscar Zarate

It’s Dark in London Cult authors and artists tackle London’s sordid underbelly It’s Dark in London features the stories of cult authors such as Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and David McKean, along with London-based writers ,including Iain Sinclair, Tony Grisoni, and Stella Duffy. This fusion produces a portrait of London that captures the city’s fundamental essence as an exquisite mixture of lofty towers and gutter sleaze, of suburban gentility and urban depravity, of private vices and public philanthropy. Concise graphic tales are interspersed with short pieces of poetry and prose in a concentrated take on the darker side of London life. The collection is edited by Oscar Zarate, a graphic novelist best known for his collaboration with Alan Moore on A Small Killing. Contributors Josh Appignanesi | Steve Bell | Dix | Stella Duffy Jonathan Edwards | Carl Flint | Neil Gaiman Melinda Gebbie | Graeme Gordon | Tony Grisoni Chris Hogg | Stewart Home | Ilya | Garry Marshall Dave McKean| Alan Moore | Christopher Petit Woodrow Phoenix | Warren Pleece | Alexei Sayle Iain Sinclair | Yana Stajno | Carol Swain | Chris Webster | Oscar Zarate “The mix of illustrators is so good... The book succeeds in making the reader look at the city with fresh eyes.” — Time Out

Richard Appignanesi and SŁava Harasymowicz

The Wolf Man The life of a tortured aristocrat – and Freud’s most famous case history Vienna 1910. Russian aristocrat Sergei Pankejeff asks for Sigmund Freud’s help. During analysis, Freud focuses on Pankejeff’s dream of a walnut tree full of white wolves. His interpretation of this dream would earn Pankejeff the enduring sobriquet “the Wolf Man”. We follow Pankejeff’s life as Freud and other analysts attempt to unravel the source of his crippling neurosis.
