Middie

Middie is a product design project developed in Istanbul Technical University, Department of Industrial Product Design Graduation Project. The project was instructed by Asst. Prof. Dr. Cem ALPPAY, Dr. Deniz LEBLEBİCİ BAŞAR, Dr. Demet GÜNAL ERTAŞ in 2019-2020 Spring semester.

RESEARCH archive

I examined the process from birth to free walk from articles and documentaries on physical and mental basis. I have seen that the tendency to walk has existed from birth and with the development of cognition, skeletal and muscular systems, walking action became feasible.

interview

I made interviews to examine the individual experiences of parents and children.Children doesn’t like to stay stable. In their game experience, I saw that they learned by constantly pushing their bodies by asking for innovation.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN analysis

I analysed the existing riding toys’ shapes to explore the geometries and silhouettes from the side and the top views. I highlighted the similtarities of the widening and the thinning areas.

sketching

My main idea was creating high functionality with simplest geometries. I started with ride on toy for 1 year old and transform it to others.

market

I searched for the products in the market that offers outcomes and made graphic to categorise the tproducts to find where will I placed my product.

mockups

I worked on forms with models made out of strafor in 1/3 and 1/1 sizes. I made paper and clay dolls. I worked on the ergonomics on models with dolls.

logo

VISUAL DESIGN

After I choose the name of the product. I select suitable colors and fonts for my product. D is general logo for my product and inspired by the products itself.

On my market research, I considered the already existed products according their technical details and functionality. My considered products are from very wide range for example arduino based yoga mats, bikes and hopscotch are in the market. I placed my product in very high functionality but simple technical details band.

Logo is based on product colors and "D" is symbolized the arc shaped body parts.

03

Middie 2019 -

In my analysing step wavey, cylindrical and arcy geometries inspired me. I specified widen and thicken areas. I compared different products from their different views and try to find common geometries from their bodies.

After finding the common geometries, I tried to solve different body silhouettes on kid bikes. I made sketches for changeable body structures. In that point functionality and simple solutions were my main ideas.

I started with 9 month-5 years age range toy series. There were different variations of toys but this variety needed so much modules. Some modules were out of use for a long time. Unused modules could have been lost over time. So I went to narrow the product range. I didn’t change my age range while reducing the variety in my second idea development. Again, I stood on a set for 9 months - 5 years. In this case, the existing set offered different experiences, not at the same time, as I aimed, but over a long period of time. Therefore, I focused on a product that can add more experience in a short time by narrowing the age range in my last product.

USER RESEARCH

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN

interview

I made interviews with different demographic based participants. At the beginning I started with kitchen appliances, but after my interviews, I find out that they share home appliances more.

survey

I made surveys to social media self-halp group members. My topics were the problems of lending and borrowing relations, motivations and bounds. I specified my user group as already motivated to share.

sketching

After I listed the product varieties, I tried to figure the form and qualities of products. I worked on the sizes too.

mockups

I tried 1/1 size mockups from rope and strap for. I worked on some locking systems. After all the form studies I 3d printed my final product and made 1/1 size models.

VISUAL DESIGN

archive

I joined to different self-help groups and documented the objects that embers borrow. I used these informations on my next steps.

application

I supported the designed system with application to make it more usable and available. I designed the interface on figma as imagine the user journey map.

logo

I choose the color for my brand to seem reliable and friendly. I used the circle, tick and arrow on my logo to refer circular sharing economy with safety.

16

My research group consists of different demographic based participants. I talked about their kitchens and cellar generally. Main topic was their sharing habits and their tilt to sharing their products. I under 30 age group more suitable to share their products and over 40 age group looks optimisticly to sharing their products but they want to own their own products at their home. After my meetings, I realized different patterns on sharing relationships. I made a survey to find most important points for my project. RESEARCH

analysis

At the beginning of the project, I examine the daily products we are using. I analysed them according their technical details and usage scenerios.

archive

I searched from dierent kind of resources about speculative design and I build my own speculation according my researchs and observations.

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN strategy

I focused on the near feature and the user behaviours. I speciďŹ ed my project area at kitchen experience and focused on the kitchen appliances.

sketching

Project has more than one product because of the modular design metodology. I tried to match the experiences and interactions to each other.

mockups

VISUAL DESIGN

I made mockups in 1/1 sizes to detailed my project. I used cork, cardboard and styrofoam on my mockups.

interface

I used the interaction and communication based relation on the system. This system is based on a interaction with the product interface. I used with Figma in this project on my interface design stage.

30

I analysed the products in daily life. I grouped them as tools, devices and ware. At the same time, I subgrubed them as manual and technical. I examined the technological products according to their technical parts and focused on their daily usage. This project is based on speculative design and creating modular products. In these bases I made researches and focused on consumerism.

I used Figma for my application design. I designed every step of application with details.

31

Cookart 2019

In my speculation, less ownership, commune life, environmentality are keywords. I focused on the sharing economy strategy between people and created changeble products. I found out the kitchen experience and the kitchen appliances are the most problematical part of our lives. Kitchen appliances generally stays in cupboards and some of the kitchen appliances are used very rarely according to others. Also generally the kitchen appliances have same technological parts.

The countertop module is functional kitchen table. Without activation, it can used as a regular kitchen table. And it is central structure for kitchen appliances. The surface can used for both cooking and searching the recips. Also it has hidden sink and storage areas.

Countertop has touch sensor on speciďŹ c areas. When users slided their hands under the countertop, storage areas slide and appear. On top of countertop there is hidden sink. When user tap twice on the top, tap get rise and sink get collapsed and appear. 34

I decided to make the lighting with interactive features. I selected my sensors, systems and codes according to this. After my ideation, I tried to find perfect interaction method for my lighting. At this stage I made sketches. I also wanted to make my product with 3D printed features.

I worked with arduino systems and produce the topling with using 3d printer. At the beginning I learned the using arduino, coding the arduino and cable placements. I used different sizes and cables to make the arduino system fit in the lighting. At the beginning I used the Istanbul Technical University's modelling atelier. I failed on my very first prints. I changed the dimensions and form of the body according to this tryings. After that I produced my final product at Artistanbul. I got contact with them from Print4Purpose interference. At my last 3d printing, everything went well.
