THE ANDERSON COLLECTION: WATERCOLORS ATTRIBUTED TO J.M.W. TURNER We often encounter works of art from the past which do not resonate through contemporary scrutiny, yet none trigger the mystique and intrigue than those of Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA (British, 1775-1851). Due to prolificity, scholarly debate, and bequest, the works attributed to the man who reintroduced landscape to life have always shared relevance to the art world. An example is the collection of works on paper belonging to John Anderson Jr. who authored the impervious 1926 title, "The Unknown Turner" Mr. Anderson's diligence and loyalty to the defense of works that were not supported by pinnacle institutions is arguably unrivaled. Mold breaking assertions and claims of hidden signatures and dates ciphered on hundreds of otherwise ambiguous works not only drew major international attention, but raised the art world’s eyebrows. The works offered from this collection, some on watermarked E&P, J. Whatman Turkey Hill and Pall Mall paper, were executed by a skilled watercolourist, a refreshing and debate-less nuance. Accompanying the works are documented appraisals as early as 1958 by C.L.J. Damme and as recent as 2010 by NIA. Hand signed correspondences from Edward Gaft Murray of the British Museum and Martin Butlin Esq. associate at the Tate Gallery are interlaced with juxtaposed letters of doubt and authentication, most notably from the Huntington Museum in Los Angeles. Also included is documented communication with dealers, historians, scientists, the National Gallery, MET, and other reputable entities which only fan the topical flame. Collection of John Anderson Jr. by acquisition, circa 1955, Lowitz Galleries, Los Angeles by acquisition, circa 1970, Frank Cushin, Executive V.P. Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. by descent, Hildebrand Family of Missouri
