McKellar, helped Pepsi create marketing campaigns that pushed societal boundaries, hurdled racial and ethnic stereotypes, and shined a more honest light on black middle class America. He is one of the subjects in the book, The Real Pepsi Challenge: The Inspirational Story of Breaking the Color Barrier in American Business, by author Stephanie Capparell. By the mid 1950s, McKellar transitioned from soft drinks to brewery by joining Falstaff Brewing Company and making St. Louis City his family home. Through his 22 years at Falstaff, McKellar eventually became Senior Vice President of Marketing recruiting Hank Aaron, Rosie Grier and James Brown as spokespersons for the brand.
