POLITICALLY CORRECT FOLK TALES OF MARIANG MAKILING HUKBONG UMAABANTE
PREFACE Maria Makiling, one of the most widely known figures of Philippine history, has been rewritten many times by many different authors throughout history, most of them male. One of them, arguably the most famous of the bunch was none other than Jose Rizal himself. Maria Makiling has been woman’s story written by a male perspective. If it is to survive and remain relevant, the Maria Makiling story needs to be rewritten and re-examined for the women of today. Realizing the biases and perspectives inherent in the story’s retellings, Hukbong Umaabante sought to rewrite and comment, exploring the woman question through the lense of four women. The zine aims to discuss the current events and key issues plaguing women in 2019. Recontextualizing and rewriting the Maria Makiling story to reflect the modern woman in the context of today’s social climate and how women can contribute to what the MKLRP refers to as the national democratic revolution. Using Rizal’s version of the text and literally writing it over and commenting on the sidelines aims not to forget or erase the past but rather to acknowledge it for what it was and to change how Maria Makiling and in a broader sense, women, are seen and discussed.
