POWELL-PERALTA Beamer prototype (Stacy Peralta’s original rider) ca. 1978 When I first started buying up old skateboards on eBay, I attempted to get by on the cheap by picking up used completes. Try as I might, however, this always struck me a bit like buying used underwear at a thrift store; I could just never get past the scuffs, scratches, and dings that I had absolutely no relation to. But having said that, I do find some of the more interesting collectible relics to be boards once ridden by pros, particularly those from the ’70s and ’80s when history was literally being made on a daily basis. At the risk of stating the glaringly obvious, some of the more treasured boards from the ’70s would be those dominated by the pioneering moves of Tony Alva Jay Adams Stacy Peralta Steve Alba Duane Peters and Steve Olson not to mention the flexible sleds put through trials of speed by the downhill slalom-likes of Henry Hester Bob Skoldberg and John Hutson. Whatever remains of the handmade boards created by Wes Humpston and Jim Muir in the days preceding the formal production years of Dogtown would also be of a first-rate collectible nature, both from a historical and artistic standpoint. Moving on up into the ’80s, Mark Gonzales’ boards would rate high amongst many skaters born out of the street generation, what with all the cryptic phrases and drawings he famously scrawled onto his grip-tape. Steve Caballero Lance Mountain Neil Blender Chris Miller, and Natas Kaupas were also known for adding a distinctive, personal flair to their boards, while Rodney Mullen’s are purely fascinating, almost clinically so, for the meticulous amount of time and effort put into his precision freestyle setups (especially those he assembled in the late ’80s when he was focused on taping pennies onto the tips of his fingers). To be sure, legends abound throughout all decades, as do extreme regional preferences and world-record stunts à la Tony Hawk Bob Burnquist, and Danny Way, so in the end I can only surmise the size of the freight train driven through one’s bank account would be entirely dependent upon the particular sphere of generational scar tissue involved. Value is, as always, entirely subjective. For some there is simply no price that can be put upon the importance of a board that carved its way through the seminal tricks, parks, and contests, even more so if its provenance can be legitimized by an old photo, advertisement, or video segment. Conversely, others may not give anything more than a passing respectful nod to a curio from the past of skateboarding. So it really is to each his own in this mad wing of the skateboard museum. Certain boards represent certain periods of my life, and from the beginning I felt they had so much sentimental value that I had a difficult time parting with them—it would be like getting rid of a pet. I still have my homemade wooden board I was skating on before I got on the Zephyr team. I’ve only sold off a very small part of my collection, mostly doubles and triples. The only reason I parted with them was to share them. None of my collection is displayed or hangs on any walls. Ninety percent of my boards are packed away in my garage, which I think wrong. It hit me one day about five years ago that other skaters and collectors in the world would probably do better with these boards than me. They’re beautiful pieces of equipment with so much history behind them that they need to be seen and displayed. All of them are such great conversation pieces. I felt others deserved them. I only keep two boards in my home. One is the wooden board I mentioned above, the other is the original Zephyr skateboard setup from the one and only Zephyr ad that ran in Skateboarder Stecyk gave it to me as a gift about ten years ago. This book, now in its 10th edition, has truly become the "Bible" of pre-millennium skateboard decks. The author guides readers with extensive knowledge and experience through the culture, art, and madness of the skateboard world. While the skateboards take center stage, engaging stories and memories from renowned skateboard personalities such as Tony Hawk, Mike Vallely, Mark Gonzales, and Stacy Peralta provide additional context.
I skated in Public Domain board was given to me the morning we started filming for the video in my state of New Jersey. Stacy Peralta like it was Christmas morning. It was the first time seeing my graphic skateboard, and it was the very first board symbolized then—and symbolizes now—a dream come true. I said, the boards then were disposable. I was always charitable used decks and after skating the board in Louisville, Kentucky, where I took that deck apart and gave it to Sean Mortimer, who just happened to be sitting there, and told him it for the new Powell-Peralta video. I probably expected him to skate it. I never expected to see that deck again, nor did I know care to.
The skateboards in "The Disposable Skateboard Bible" are organized by decades: from the 1960s, when the first deck designs emerged; through the 1970s with the groundbreaking introduction of urethane wheels; the 1980s with its highs and lows, large decks, and the mass market; to the graphic chaos of the 1990s and the beginning of the new millennium.

Sean Cliver is a multi-talented artist, producer, author, and photographer. He landed his first job in the skateboard industry in 1989 as a designer for Powell-Peralta. He then worked as an editor for Big Brother Magazine, and as a producer and writer for Jackass, Wildboyz, and Bad Grandpa. During this time, he created some of the most sophisticated, crazy, and sought-after skateboard illustrations.

When African-American music broke out of the church in the early 1960s and singers such as Ray Charles and Sam Cooke added secular lyrics to gospel in order to tap into a new audience, the 7" single was the medium of the hour. The early soul LPs were mostly compilations of successful singles, enriched with cover versions, but this was to change radically in 1971 when Marvin Gaye released "What's Going On" against the resistance of his label Motown. After that, there was no stopping him.
Sly & The Family Stone, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, The Temptations, James Brown and countless criminally ignored groups used the medium to comment on grievances and experiment. Songs stretched over ten minutes and left the radio-friendly three-minute format. The music was also given a visual aesthetic, the musicians were given a face and told their story on the backs of the covers. Anyone who had previously raved about Al Green's voice could now hold him in their hands as an LP, reclining on a wicker chair in a white suit.
Today, original LPs are traded for sometimes dizzying sums. Record shops and online exchanges are booming. The feel of the record, the crackling when the needle grips the groove, analogue playback and, last but not least, DJ culture have simply defied the logic of technological progress. They say that the dead live longer. This certainly applies to the LP. This calendar is dedicated to the aura that only an original pressing can have.

About the author:
Hermann Vaske is a director, author, and producer. As a director he worked with actors such as Dennis Hopper, Harvey Keitel, Sir Peter Ustinov and John Cleese. As a producer, he worked with artists such as Marina Abramovic, Shirin Neshat and Vivienne Westwood and extraordinary human beings such as Nelson Mandela, Stephen Hawking and the Dalai Lama. His films have been shown in Venice, Cannes, Toronto and Palm Springs and won numerous awards. Including the Grimme-Preis, Germany’s TV Oscar, the Hessian Film Award, Venice TV Festival, Gold Clios, Cannes Lions and New York Festivals Film & TV Awards.

Born in Germany, she started her career as a hairstylist and makeup artist before discovering the world of analog photography in 2016. From the beginning, her main topic was clear: beautiful women. It is quite astonishing what the FUMES AND PERFUMES curatorial team has collected on the walls of the Züblin multi-storey car park over ten years. Over the years, more than 500 pictures have been wallpapered and in some cases wallpapered again. Today, just over 300 works can be admired on the five car park decks.
It is not only remarkable that this exhibition is taking place in such an unexpected location, but also the renowned photographic artists that the curatorial team has brought together.
