Have a say on Your Future Selwyn – Waihora Whata Rau

One of the big decisions we are seeking community feedback on in our Long-Term Plan 2024-2034 is the Waihora Whata Rau project in Ellesmere.

Three years ago, the Council agreed to build a new library, council service centre and community facility at Leeston, which has been gifted the name, Whata Rau. We also agreed to carry out landscape improvements to Leeston Park, next door to where the new facility would be built. Together, the two projects form Waihora Whata Rau.

We’re asking for residents’ feedback on four potential options to deliver Whata Rau (Big Decision 2a), and three options for the Leeston Park improvements (Big Decision 2b).

Road Works Updates

Shands Road Intersections and Trents Road Upgrade

In addition to the existing traffic management, the following changes will take place from Monday 15 April.

Shands Road Moving to One-Way

For approximately 4 weeks, Shands Road between Hamptons Road and Blakes Road will be one-way heading north towards Hornby. Detours will be in place down Blakes Road for southbound traffic (heading away from Hornby).

Trents Road (East) One-Way Extension

For approximately 2 weeks, the current one-way traffic management system on Trents Road (east) will be extended to run further down Trents Road towards Edwin Trent Drive. As a result, Farthing Drive at the intersection with Trents Road will be closed during this time.

Trents Road (West) Moving to One-Way

For approximately 4 weeks, Trents Road (west) at the intersection with Shands Road will be moving one-way, with no entry onto Shands Road. For further information and maps of the affected areas please visit selwyn.govt.nz/ shandsroundabouts

These options are, building Whata Rau as planned; including more, or less in the building; or not building the facility at all. By not building the new facility, significant repairs would needed for the existing Leeston Library and Council Service Centre so that it can be used for limited period of time.

Options for Leeston Park include carrying out the work that had been agreed to; doing the full work contained in the new Master Plan; or not carrying out the improvements at all.

To read more and make a submission, head to selwyn.govt.nz/ltp. Submissions are welcome until 5pm, Thursday 2 May 2024.

Springston Rolleston Road

Road works are being carried out on Springston Rolleston Road between Lowes Road and Broadlands Drive to install a new watermain.

From 13-17 April, Springston Rolleston Road will be closed, with a detour in place via Lowes Road and Broadlands Drive.

From 18-27 April, Springston Rolleston Road will be open to traffic one-way northbound (towards the town centre).

A southbound detour will be in place via Lowes Road and Broadlands Drive.
