MONTEROSA RECEIVES FIRST PRIZE AT MERCABARNA INNOVA AND CONTINUES ITS UNSTOPPABLE GROWTH
The last month of the year is time to take stock, to look back at the steps we have taken and focus on the coming year. And once again, we can again say that we are pleased with the progress we have made, that we continue to grow, post strong results and, in turn, build a good basis to continue doing so in the years ahead. These results do not just happen by chance. Our consolidation as a leading company in the industry is thanks to everyone’s hard work. It is also time to remember and appreciate not only the numerical results but also the relational results, since we all know that for the company, human capital development is very important. This past year we have welcomed new colleagues and we have seen others leave. For those who left, we trust they took advantage of their time at Fitó to develop both professionally and personally and we wish them well in their new projects. For those who joined Fitó — and those who have been with the company for years — I encourage you to continue living out our mission clearly and strongly. We know that resources, results, people, etc. are always changing and evolving, but our hallmark values which give meaning to our organisation will remain constant, and this underlying raison d’être must always be guide our footsteps at Semillas Fitó. Thank you and happy New Year to all!
Gavà Grup’s Francesc Llonch, along with the other winners on 8 November, during the Mercabarna Innova award ceremony.
The food exhibition organised the second edition of the “Mercabarna Innova” award, which recognise innovation among the 700 small and medium enterprises that are part of the Mercabarna company. This year eight companies were presented with innovative projects in the field of products, marketing and packaging. The first prize was awarded to Gavà Grup, the company that plants, cultivates and distributes our Monterosa tomato, noting that the variety maintains the traditional flavour of tomatoes from the Mediterranean garden year-round.

VEGETABLES
CORPORATE CONVENTIONS This past month the annual conventions were held for the Vegetables and Field Crops divisions in various locations.
COMPLETION OF R&D STATION IN MEXICO
The Annual Sales Convention for Vegetables took place in Calahorra from 23 to 25 November for the areas of Almería, Iberia and Portugal. The first day began with the presentation of sales analysis and results achieved this year, 2016, by the Division Head for Europe, Israel Roca, and Area Managers, Fco. Javier Rodríguez and Vasco Vital.
We are very pleased to report that we have completed, in recent months, the full implementation of the new R&D station in the Culiacán centre in Mexico. The station boasts a working surface of 5.45 hectares, where the various tests and evaluations are established, of which 4.7 hectares are protected (with meshes and greenhouses) and 0.75 hectares are open field. A new building has also been built to house offices and the logistics department. This centre carries out breeding programs for tomatoes, cucumbers, pumpkins, peppers and eggplant, distributed and arranged in different stages for the corresponding evaluations. Open field crops focus mainly on grey and black pumpkins. This new season has a dedicated commercial space where trials are conducted for products that are already being sold. The space is used as an exhibition showroom for farmers who visit the installations. Since 2013, geneticists from Europe and the United States have worked intensively to develop varieties for Mexico and the America region along with our local team of engineers trained by Juan José Arredondo Osuna, Farm Manager, and Geneticist Assistants Paul Sicarios García and Jesús Barraza Verdugo.

The Sales Technicians likewise took stock of the challenges proposed two years earlier and the results obtained for each variety they handle. The Chain Manager, Tom Lombaerts, also presented an analysis of current strategies in supermarkets and the position of our Monterosa tomato in this market, and the new head of the Hobby division, José Ramon Lezana, spoke about the new organisation and future areas of action for the division. The second day began with an interesting exhibition on the analysis of our competition by Area Managers, prior to a corporate visit to the facilities of Virto, a company dedicated to the production of vegetables and frozen vegetables located in Azagra. The last segment, dedicated to communication and presented by Oriol Francàs, focused on the actions carried out this year and an introduction to new projects for 2017 in terms of brand promotion and the new content digitisation efforts planned. Xavi Fitó, the closing speaker of this second annual meeting, gave a comprehensive overview of the sector and thanked and encouraged attendees to follow the path marked out. On the last day of the event, a hiking and segway excursion was organised to the fascinating Bardenas Reales natural area. The Field Crops Annual Convention likewise took place in Barcelona on 23 November and, as every year, it featured presentations from Area Managers and the Head of the division, Eugenio Gonzalez, who presented the sales situation for 2016. Operations and R&D department news were then presented by Ivan Macarulla and Marc Solsona respectively.
FIRST SHOWCASE IN FLORIDA
One of the presentations during the Field Crops convention in Barcelona.
This year was the first time a group of 21 national distributors from the Premier Distributors programme were present. The programme aims to offer a series of incentives initiatives to boost the market share for their provinces. The second part of the day focused on highlighting new products and technologies which the Seed Technology Department is developing, with a presentation by Juan Jesús Narváez. Lidia Paredes, Enrique Roca and Antonio José Iniesta continued with the presentation of programs which will be offered in 2017 to this group of distributors: Financing Program, Seed Insurance Program, Fitó Agronomic Solutions and Training Program. Finally, Eugenio González and Eduard Fitó closed the convention with presentations that illustrated very well the future of agriculture and the essence of Semillas Fitó. The Italy region organised its sales convention jointly for the Vegetables and Field Crops divisions, from 30 November to 1 December in Desenzano, a village on the shores of Lake Garda. Each division held its events separately, but they joined forces for a lively bocce match and a subsequent dinner on the first night.

After four years of research, the first Showcase for the America region was organised this fall, where about 1,000 hybrids — including tomatoes and peppers — were evaluated in our Florida testing station. This event, held on 14 and 15 November in Bonita Springs (Florida), involved the Sales and Development and Breeding teams. Several tomato hybrids were selected for the occasion, both round and saladette-style, and Dahra-type peppers. In addition to becoming a training day to learn and share technical impressions, there was also time for leisure and networking, including a product tasting and the organisation of a fishing day after the event.

MURGIVERDE VISIT
FRUIT ATTRACTION IN MADRID
A pink-tinted edition
Yet another year, and on the heels of the success at Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February, we were present from 5 to 7 October at Fruit Attraction in Madrid, the international fruit and vegetable trade fair organised by IFEMA and FEPEX (Spanish Federation of Producers and Exporters of Fruits, Vegetables, Flowers and Live Plants). This edition featured more than 33,000 square metres of exhibition space, 13% more than last year, and participation of 1,200 exhibitors from 30 countries and about 55,000 professionals from 100 different countries. Continuing the communication line marked by the previous fair, we focused on driving the message of our three core principles: Service, Research and Guarantee. We also underscored our international leadership in some segments such as yellow melon, black semi-long eggplant and Dutch cucumber, for which also enjoy a wide range of varieties, covering all types. We also showcased some of the latest developments, such as the Ateneo tomato, celebrating its second year in the market, and the Maestral pepper, besides devoting time to Agroindustria produce. Our unique variety of tomato, Monterosa, inspired by a rustic Mediterranean cuisine, was featured in a space where visitors could taste some of our finest products. This was a pink-tinted edition, because this variety was also introduced alongside Gavà Grup, the company that cultivates and distributes it, at the Innova Forum, a space for talks, presentations and technical seminars related to sector developments, under the title “Monterosa Tomato Project — excellence from seed to harvest,” by Jordi Ballester and Francesc Llonch. Chef Irina Castro also debuted with a cooking show and tasting at Fruit Fusión, the fair’s gastronomic space for the dissemination of best agricultural produce for restaurants.

Members of the Governing Board of the Murgiverde Cooperative with our sales technician Carlos Fernández.
One of the strategic lines for the Vegetables division is to offer tours of our facilities to demonstrate our commitment to research. In line with this objective, last September a new corporate visit was organised with Almería region clients. This time around, we invited members of the Governing Board of the Murgiverde Cooperative, one of the most important cooperatives in the area, to whom we offered a corporate tour to show them our centres in Barcelona, Llavaneres and Cabrera, including a tour of our biotechnology laboratory. During the two-day visit, we had the opportunity to talk about our products, competition and industry advances in general. They were especially interested in the subject of developments in cucumber (CGMMV) and zucchini (New Delhi) resistance. We see the event as a big success as it made a very positive impact on participants and helped strengthen relational ties to this community, which encourages us to repeat it soon with other board members.
GREAT PARTICIPATION SUCCESS AT EXPO AGROALIMENTARIA IN IRAPUATO, MEXICO
The 2016 Food Expo from 8 to 11 November, in the new facilities near Rancho La Florida, in the city of Irapuato, Guanajuato (Mexico), in which Semillas Fitó had a significant presence. The exhibition area, divided in an outer and an inner area, boasted an area of over 60 hectares, drawing more than 1,000 exhibitors and 128,000 visitors. Outside the fair facilities, Semillas Fitó Mexico set up a major active participation area featuring greenhouses and macro tunnel to show farmers our different hybrids and showcase new company products. The greenhouse stand also featured a meeting room where we gave educational lectures on topics of interest to farmers, distributors and marketers in the area, who came to our space. On the inside, we had a stand shared with our distributor in the region, Agro Guanajuato, where we could meet visitors and bolster relationships with producers. The Semillas Fitó Mexico team presented all attendees the new catalogue, featuring a significant share of the cucumber segment, with new products such as the Slicer FRA-14022 and HA-110757 cucumber for Persian cucumbers, demonstrating our leadership and consolidation in this segment. The macro tunnel featured Saladette and Beef tomatoes. The Runner variety, eggplants and carrots were also presented for the first time ever.

FIELD CROPS FIRST-TIME PARTICIPANTS IN AGROGLOBAL
The Semillas Fitó Field Crops Division was present for the first time from 7 to 9 September at the Agroglobal Fair held in Valada Do Ribatejo, Portugal. This is the largest professional agricultural fair in Portugal — featuring more than 286 exhibitors this year — which is very popular in the sector because it includes a practical aspect of field demonstrations which attendees find very interesting. As part of the fair, Semillas Fitó organised a field day on Thursday, 8 September, where corn trials were carried out with Temuco, Calgary, Hatay and Carella varieties, and the Hispalis sunflower variety. The event concluded with a relaxed meal where attendees were invited to exchange views on the specialties presented.
ANGLO-ARABIAN WEEK One more year, Semillas Fitó again became a sponsor of the Anglo-Arabian Week that took place at the Real Club Pineda in Seville from 15 to 18 September. This is a perfect opportunity to present all the new forage varieties to breeders, veterinarians, farmers and general public passionate about the Anglo-Arabian horse.
INTERNATIONAL FIELD DAY
During the weeks of 12 to 16 September and 26 to 30 of the same month, the International Field Day took place, a biannual event where Field Crops division distributors from around the world are invited to visit corporate facilities in Barcelona, Cabrera, Llavaneres and Les Cases de Barbens. This is the most important event in terms of promotion for our international markets in this division, and our aim is to convey our company’s values and challenges. This year over 180 participants from 20 countries were present: Romania, Moldova, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Serbia, Greece, Israel, Albania, Lebanon, Iran, Iraq, Turkey, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Germany, Denmark, France, Portugal and Spain. Several presentations on various subjects were made during the event, including new technologies applied in the R&D and Seed Technology departments. The visit to the fields of Les Cases de Barbens was also used to display the full range of corn hybrids, focusing particularly on new hybrids and special products. This was a perfect opportunity to highlight Semillas Fitó’s dimension as a multinational player in the industry, with a great capacity for innovation in its products and processes and modern production and logistics facilities that contribute substantial advantages to the distribution chain.
We took part with our dealer, Subseagro, who organised a meeting with its clients in Andalusia, where our sales technician, Fco. Javier Moya, had the opportunity to present the wide range of Semillas Fitó products, highlighting Fitomix formulas, which offer greater profitability and sustainability for farms, the Alhama black oat, which is specific for horses, as well as the new variety of Hybiza wheat hybrid.

ANNUAL MEETING OF EUROPEAN TUFGRASS PRODUCERS
PRESENCE AT THE BUSIEST EDITION OF IBERFLORA From 28 to 30 September we attended the Iberflora fair in Valencia with a corporate booth where we presented our seeds for vegetables, legumes, turfs, flowers and herbs in our division geared toward the nonprofessional consumer. The International Fair of Plants and Flowers, Landscaping, Technology and Garden DIY received this year 20% more visitors than the previous year, reaching a total of 10,796 visits. There was a large influx of Garden Centre professionals, mainly from Spanish and neighbouring markets such as Portugal and France. During the three days we had the opportunity to welcome many of our customers throughout Spain and make new contacts with potential domestic and international customers.
The European Turfgrass Producers (ETP) Association organised a fam trip from 28 to 30 September to Ginosa, a city in southern Italy, to bring together all members of the organisation for several days of presentations and celebrations where attendees could network and discover industry developments. It is the first time Semillas Fitó has attended this annual meeting, which we left with a very good feeling, after confirming that our varieties are already highly respected in the industry, which makes us a leading company in the supply of seed for turfgrass production at European level.
WE INVITED MARTÍ AGRÍCOLA TO TOUR OUR FACILITIES
CORPORATE VISIT WITH OUR ITALIAN DISTRIBUTOR Last October we organised an interesting corporate visit to Les Cases de Barbens and Cabrera de Mar facilities with our distributor in the Italian Piedmont area. The major greenkepers and groundsmen of this region were invited. Attendees were able to visit our Biotechnology Laboratory and the different state-of-the-art varieties developed in our test field at Cabrera de Mar, as well as new facilities at Les Cases de Barbens, Lleida, at full capacity. From a corporate standpoint, our aim was to show the commitment and resources invested by Semillas Fitó on research, quality and innovation, so we also visited the golf courses in El Prat and PGA Catalunya to show the real-life use of our varieties.
The last week of November we organised a field day with our Barcelona distributor, Martí Agrícola, attended by more than 30 customers who were able to see first-hand our facilities located in Cabrera de Mar. We started with a visit to the turf test fields, guided by the Director of the Turf Grasses Division, Josep Cirera, along with our colleagues Kadri Abbassi, Key Account Manager, and Paco Molina, Sales Technician. We then toured the interior of the facility where we visited the Biotechnology Laboratory, guided by one of our R&D experts, Torben Jahrmann, who explained the current projects being carried out at the centre.
PRESENCE AT THE ANNUAL GREENKEEPERS CONGRESS IN BENIDORM One more year Semillas Fitó attended the Annual Greenkeepers Congress organised by the Spanish Association of Greenkeepers. This 38th edition was held at the Hotel Melia Villaitana in Benidorm from 22 to 24 of November. We enjoyed seminars, conferences and roundtables on various topics by renowned speakers such as Miguel A. Guerra, Alan Ferguson and Kate Entwistle. We also set up an exhibition space where we showcased the new Turf Grasses 2017 catalogue, featuring new products that aim to meet the needs and concerns identified among industry professionals.

Report The foundation currently has 23 socio-educational centres working daily with around 2,500 children. Through a space organised with school support activities and educational leisure guided by social workers, psychologists and volunteers, children can grow and develop emotionally and sharpen their skills to have the same opportunities as other children and enjoy a full and happy life.

The start of a long-term collaboration
This first donation of material was made to the Poble Nou Social Centre, located just 150 metres from our facilities, which has recently concluded a major renovation funded by private and corporate contributions. This first contribution encouraged us to organise a briefing at our offices to share with all employees the rationale behind this social work to which we now collaborate. Centre coordinators, together with the Director, Cristina López, and Communications Officer of the foundation, Lali Oliver, explained to us the structure and work carried out in this centre through its family space, evening socioeducational space and all its long-term projects, where we will explore connection points to further develop our cooperation.
“Children who use
the centre come from Poblenou, Besòs, La Verneda and La Pau, neighbourhoods in the Sant Martí district where social inequality is quite high.
In addition to this first effort, we again collaborated with them when the company Sembra, former Semillas Fitó business line which now operates autonomously as an independent business, contacted us for the donation of 200 out-of-stock kits for children and adults who want to start growing a home garden. We thought this was the perfect opportunity to contribute a bit more and we pointed them to the Pere Tarrés Foundation, with the aim boosting their work resources for projects. These kits will be distributed among all the foundation’s centres and will be used to undertake educational activities for children and families, and some of them will be donated the Christmas toy drive.
A few months ago, Eduard and Xavi Fitó visited the Poblenou Social Centre, which allowed them to learn more about the work of the Fundació Pere Tarrés, dedicated to the care of children and youth at risk of social exclusion. Following this visit, we have collaborated with the foundation recently by donating computer equipment with the aim of improving their educational resources for these children’s education.
“ The Pere Tarrés Foundation is dedicated to caring for children, youth and their families in a situation of social vulnerability.
